Ron’s on a
mission to
‘finish’ his
park work
• By Geoff Sloan
AT 88, Ron Abraham likes to
keep himself busy.
Over the last few years, the
retiree has taken to voluntarily
tidying up Linwood Park a couple
of times a week.
Arriving on his tool-laden bike,
Ron gets stuck into the well-used
public space.
“When you’re old, you’ve got to
have something to do. I’m happy
I can still do something useful,”
he said.
Ron who lives about a kilometre
from the park also enjoys walking
there with his wife, Jenny, to
watch the world go by.
“We like to sit on the seats and
watch the kids play,” he said.
A former boilermaker, Ron has
always been handy.
His first job was as a
stonemason’s apprentice in his
hometown of Liverpool, helping
repair bomb-damaged buildings
after World War 2.
At 26, he emigrated to New
Zealand in search of work.
Despite Jenny’s concerns he
is overdoing it, Ron remains
committed to his cause.
“She thinks I’m wasting my
time, it’s a load of rubbish,” he
said.
He likes to talk to passersby
who offer words of
encouragement.
Apart from occasional
conversations with Citycare
workers, Ron said he hasn’t been
in touch with the city council
about his efforts at the park.
City council community
parks manager Al Hardy said
it wasn’t unusual for volunteers
to help out, but urged anyone
interested in doing similar work
to register their interest via the
city council website.
This allows them to connect to
volunteer groups and get support
from the community partnership
ranger.
Ron plans to keep his gardening
work going as long as he can.
“I’ve probably got another
couple of years left in me,” he said.
“I’d like to finish the park
off before my time’s up. If that
happens, I’ll be happy. Mission
completed.”
Community garden dream to
take root in Addington Park
• By Jack Ward
A COMMUNAL fruit and vegetable
garden is coming to Addington Park.
The Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-
Heathcote Community Board has
unanimously approved a lease for the
Addington Farm Trust to establish
a community garden in the park’s
southeastern corner.
Addington Farm Trust chair
Sophie Bond said the
decision felt “a little
surreal” after years
of dreaming and
planning.
“It’s been a long
time coming. When
you look at the way
the park is now, if you
put a community hub
with a lot of people
coming and going,
you are creating a more open and
attractive place.”
Sophie
Bond
Since 2018, Addington Farm has run
a community garden on Parlane St
with the goal of growing a network of
gardens and gardeners.
The site has hosted working bees,
workshops and has produced fresh
food for locals and Addington School.
“This is really positive for the farm,
it secures our future expansion and
accessibility,” Bond said.
The board has also approved the
construction of a storage shed and
walk-in chiller, as well as renovations to
part of the existing changing rooms.
NEW FUTURE: The southeast corner of Addington Park will be
transformed into the Addington Park Community Garden after plans
were unanimously approved by the Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-
Heathcote Community Board
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
The changing rooms will be
transformed into a multi-use
community space with an office,
activities room, meeting room and
kitchenette.
Bond said the trust has earmarked
a budget of about $160,000 for the
project and will now seek external
funding.
“That is the budget for fencing
around the garden beds, built
structures like sheds and signage,
equipment such as frost cloth, a
weed whacker, irrigation system and
partial refit of the current building.”
Thursday April 24 2025
The new community space is also
expected to address some concerns
raised by locals about safety and
antisocial behaviour in the park.
“Communities gathering together
will bring more positive activity and
provide an inviting place,” Bond said.
The first step will be spraying down
the grass, with plans for planting to
begin by the end of the year.
“We’re hoping to put in vegetable
crops – stuff like tomatoes, leafy
greens, courgettes, berry bushes and
beans. All things that will crop early
for the summer harvest,” Bond said.
South Library demolition
about to get under way
THE FIRST steps to build the
new $32m Ōmōkihi South
Library and Customer Service
Hub are about to get under way.
City council
head of libraries
and information
Carolyn
Robertson said
Cook Brothers
Construction
has been
appointed the
main contractor
to carry out the
work.
Carolyn
Robertson
“Our contractors will spend
the first few weeks stripping
out the interiors of the existing
building at 66 Colombo Street,
then move on to the full demolition,”
Robertson said.
This phase is expected to take
until the end of July and will be
followed by the construction of
the replacement building.
“The entire project is set to
wrap up at the end of next year,
with doors opening in December
2026.”
City councillors approved
the rebuild of the earthquakedamaged
community facility in
October.
Said Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote
Community
Board chair Callum Ward: “It’s
the next couple of weeks.
great to see the construction
phase getting started on the very
popular community site.
“The South Christchurch
Farmers’ Market will keep
running throughout the rebuild
project, and people can continue
to visit the pop-up South
Library site at the Colombo and
customer service desk at Pioneer
Recreation and Sport Centre.”
Cook Brothers Construction
regional manager Jaden Scott
said contractors are setting up a
community information hub at
the entrance to the library car
park on Hunter Tce.
“While we will have fencing in
place to keep the worksite safe
and secure, people are welcome
to stop by the info hub and see
the progress of the rebuild or
drop us a line about any concerns.
“We look forward to working
with the local community and
keeping everyone informed
throughout the project.”
Welcome pack to
be relaunched
INFORMATION about parks,
cycleways and bus routes are key
features to include in a welcome
pack for new residents moving to
Addington.
The Addington Neighbourhood
Association is relaunching its
welcome pack.
It created a survey in March to
find out what residents would like
included in the pack, which is for
people moving to the suburb.
Survey organiser Vicki Hall
said responses doubled in the past
two weeks from 15 to 33, despite
the population of Addington last
year being 6400.
“People are just busy and bombarded
with lots of things. I did
not have any expectations, but it
would have been nice to get more
(responses).”
Hall said having feedback was
better than no engagement.
She said responses showed
an appetite for information
about parks, cycleways and bus
routes, as well as community
initiatives.
“There was particular interest
in making sure our new
neighbours knew of our local
community initiatives and
community hubs like Mānuka
Cottage, Addington Times and
Kia Ora Addington.”
Hall said it was encouraging
many responses supported
the inclusion of te reo Māori
and New Zealand Sign
Language.
She expected the pack will
change with the needs and
interests of its intended recipients.
The Bookshop Ladies by Faith Hogan
A gripping saga of friendship, betrayal and secrets in this story of a widow in search
of answers to a shocking confession by her dying husband. Joy Blackwood has no
idea why her French art dealer husband has left a valuable painting to a woman
called Robyn Tessier in Ballycove, a small town on the west coast of Ireland, but
she is determined to find out. She arrives in Ballycove to find that Robyn runs a
rather chaotic and unprofitable bookshop. She is shy, suffering from unrequited
love for dashing Kian, and badly in need of advice on how to make the bookshop
successful. Joy uncovers the secrets behind her husband’s painting grows increasingly
challenging. When she finally musters the courage to confront the truth, her revelation
sends shockwaves through the tight-knit community she’s grown to love.
The Prosecutor One Man’s Battle to Bring Nazis to Justice
by Jack Fairweather
The true story of a Jewish lawyer who returned to Germany after WWII to prosecute war
crimes, only to find himself pitted against a nation determined to bury the past. At the
end of the Nuremberg trial in 1946, some of the greatest war criminals in history were
sentenced to death, but hundreds of thousands of Nazi murderers and collaborators
remained at large. The Allies were ready to overlook their pasts as the Cold War began,
and the horrors of the Holocaust were in danger of being forgotten. The Prosecutor
brings to life the remarkable story of Fritz Bauer, a gay German Jew who survived the
Nazis and made it his mission to force his countrymen to confront their complicity in
the genocide. The Prosecutor is a searing portrait of a nation emerging from the ruins of
fascism and one man’s courage in forcing his people--and the world--to face the truth.
ANZAC DAY
FRIDAY APRIL 25, 2025
Increased attendance at
ANZAC Day services
Written by: Fiona Robinson
Are you planning to attend one of the dawn services or other events
in your area on the 25th of April? Across the country, many people
gather in the early hours of the morning or later in the day for solemn
ANZAC Day ceremonies. These ceremonies often feature playing the
Last Post, a minute of silence, laying of wreaths, and where veterans,
current service members, and the public march together in parades.
Increasingly, New Zealanders are choosing to show their respect and
gratitude by attending these services.
Why has attendance increased?
In New Zealand schools, the New Zealand Curriculum allows
students to explore the experiences of New Zealanders during
World War I, including the Gallipoli campaign and the significance
of ANZAC Day for New Zealanders. As younger generations learn
about New Zealand’s role in the Gallipoli campaign and World War I,
they become eager to commemorate ANZAC Day.
Visiting historical sites like Gallipoli has also become part of many
young New Zealanders’ overseas experiences. A visit to Gallipoli
deepens their connection to the events commemorated on ANZAC
Day, and on their return to New Zealand, they participate in local
services.
Proud to support 2025 ANZAC remembrance
As part of exploring our national identity and learning about New
Zealand’s history, ANZAC Day is a central focus in our national
consciousness. People have the opportunity to reflect on the
sacrifices made by previous generations, honouring their bravery
and resilience, allowing them to appreciate the courage and
determination that shaped our nation.
New Zealand society is now diverse. Nowadays, community ANZAC
Day events and commemorations have evolved to be more
inclusive. This inclusivity encourages people from all walks of life,
different nationalities and community groups to participate and
learn about New Zealand’s involvement at Gallipoli and more recent
conflicts.
As part of the ANZAC Day services, which honour those who served
in New Zealand’s involvement in World Wars, ANZAC Day now also
acknowledges New Zealanders involved in recent conflicts and
peacekeeping missions. Current global events highlight the continued
contributions and sacrifices of service members today.
Education, overseas experiences, national identity, inclusivity, and
global concerns about peace have helped revitalise public engagement
with ANZAC Day, leading to larger attendances at services nationwide.
