Frustrated
mum wants
from police
• By Dylan Smits
A MOTHER is frustrated by a
lack of communication from
police after her son was injured
in a hit-and-run nearly two
weeks ago.
Angela Renwick says she has
not heard from police since making
a statement at the central
police station on April 13.
Her 15-year-old son, Brendon,
suffered significant bruising
and has ongoing issues from a
concussion after he was hit by
a maroon minivan while using
a pedestrian crossing at the intersection
of Buchanans Rd and
Carmen Rd in Hei Hei.
The incident happened on
Saturday, April 12 about 4pm.
Renwick said the police officer
who took her statement said it
could take up to three weeks to
access and review footage from
Renwick told The Star.
“They need to be locked up.
Hitting a child and then not
Renwick and Brendon are
hopeful the vehicle and driver
can be identified through the
camera footage.
When contacted by The
whether the footage had been
accessed or reviewed, or why
they had not been in contact
with Renwick.
Farmer headbutted
by ram airlifted out
A KAITUNA Valley farmer was
injured after being headbutted
by one of his rams.
The incident happened about
3pm on Saturday.
The man in his 70s was found
later by his family in the sheep
shed.
It is understood he was there
for a few hours before being
discovered.
He was lucid but unable to
A STARNEWS.CO.NZ poll
shows support for the use of
facial recognition technology to
tackle retail crime.
Of 776 respondents, 61%
said it would be a good tool for
businesses and police, while 39%
opposed its use due to privacy
concerns.
It comes as a trial of the
technology in 25 New World
and Pak’nSave stores has now
finished.
It was estimated to have helped
prevent 100 “serious harmful
events” but also misidentified
nine people.
Justice Minister Paul
Goldsmith wants to make
facial recognition technology
a permanent tool in the fight
against retail crime.
Retail crime is estimated to
cost about $2.6 billion a year
and Goldsmith has already
announced plans to broaden
citizens’ arrest powers.
Facial recognition technology
is a key part of the Government’s
plan to tackle retail crime, which
includes strengthening the
trespass law and introducing onthe-spot
fines for shoplifting.
The man’s family called
Hato Hone St John. A rescue
helicopter was called to the
scene.
The Little River Volunteer Fire
Brigade was also dispatched to
assist the chopper to land about
7pm.
The rescue helicopter arrived
about 8pm. Firefighters and an
ambulance crew carried the
man to the helicopter before it
took him to the hospital.
Goldsmith has been laying
the groundwork to extend
the use of facial recognition
technology.
“I’m on the side of being as
enabling as we can, primarily
because the strong feedback
we’ve had – certainly in the
trial – [is] that it diffuses the
Herald. Cabinet will make
decisions about trespass law,
and shoplifting fines by the end
of June.
But the NZ Council for Civil
Hit-and run
victim: ‘I just
A police spokesperson said an
investigation was underway to
comment on specific steps being
taken or when the footage would
be reviewed.
“The victim and his family
Said Renwick: “It’s not very good
to hear that. It’s taking too long to
get information from them.”
An NZTA spokesperson said no
police request for camera footage
had been received but police are
able to check the footage directly
themselves.
“If the request comes in more
than three weeks after the event
Renwick and her son are
appealing for any eyewitnesses
Brendon, a year 11 student at
Christchurch Boys’ High, was
visit a friend.
“I could see the van in my
The van hit Brendon on his
moment. I’m mostly scared about
crossing roads now,” Brendon said.
Going the distance in a
chicken suit for charity
HADANI WOODRUFF has run
a marathon a day around Hagley
Park for 10 days straight to raise
money for a mental health and
addiction recovery charity.
Woodruff is a volunteer coach
at Speed Freaks, an organisation
that supports recovery through
running and walking group
sessions.
She said exercise and running
helped her when she struggled
with her own mental health, and
she wanted to support Speed
Freaks so it could help others.
Woodruff finished her final
marathon on Monday, covering
about 422 kilometres over the 10
days and completing all the runs
dressed as a chicken.
“I just thought it was funny,
it’s so ridiculous. It’s really been
spreading the message. A lot of the
community have been coming in
and giving us a hand and running
with me through Hagley Park.
People turning up with food –
it’s just been such an awesome
experience.”
Woodruff said she had prepared
for the mammoth running effort.
“I run quite a lot – about six days
a week. I do some gym training
and strength training and over
time building that up so you can
handle more and more distance.”
final marathon.
Woodruff had always disliked
running, but found it changed her
life.
“With my own experience
of mental illness as an adult, I
struggled a lot managing that.
Eventually I discovered exercise
and running. I gave it a go and it
made such a difference with my
outlook and my confidence, selfesteem.
“It changes everything in a lot of
different ways, and I really wanted
to spread the word and support
other people going through their
own struggles and helping them
get through.
“(Speed Freaks) supports people
in recovery and people with
experience of mental distress and
we use running, walking and
connection and community to get
people together. It makes such a
difference in people’s lives.”
A Givealittle page for
Woodruff’s 10 marathons has so
far raised more than $7200.
Call for transparency if independent
candidates align with ACT, National
• By Dylan Smits
INDEPENDENT Citizens is
open to ward election deals
with the ACT Party if it runs
Christchurch candidates in the
local body elections.
The right-leaning
political ticket’s
chair Jason
Middlemiss said
ACT candidates
would “probably
share some core
Jason
Middlemiss
values”.
“There will
probably be
some conversations
(with ACT) to make sure
any candidates running are not
stepping on each others toes,” he
said.
ACT has opened applications
for prospective candidates to run
under its party banner for the
first time at local level.
Left-leaning The People’s
Choice chair Paul McMahon
said Middlemiss’s views of ACT
shows Independent Citizens and
other right-leaning independents
are “pretendependents”.
The term, coined by Banks
Peninsula Ward city councillor
Tyrone Fields last month,
accused right-leaning independents
of lacking
transparency
over connections
to the National
and ACT.
People’s
Choice is affiliated
with the
Labour Party.
McMahon
Paul
McMahon
said Independent Citizens and
right-leaning independent candidates
should run as National
or ACT candidates to make their
political beliefs more transparent
to voters.
“People should be upfront
about what they stand for. That’s
one of the strengths of People’s
Choice is that we’re very clear
that a number of us are Labour
people.”
LOCAL
LEVEL:
ACT is
looking for
candidates to
run under its
party banner
in October’s
local body
elections.
PHOTO: NICK
MONRO/RNZ
Middlemiss said possible ward
deals aim to prevent centre-right
vote-splitting, rather than full
alignment with any party.
He would like there to be caseby-case
conversations between
Independent Citizens, ACT and
other right-leaning independents
to avoid running multiple rightof-centre
candidates in a single
ward.
“When there’s a bit of political
alignment, it’s not in your best
interest to fight to the death
against each other. It would be
silly not to have a conversation
about that.”
An ACT spokesperson said
no formal deals will be made
with local political groups, but
said “pragmatic decisions” about
where to run candidates would
be made on a ward by ward
basis.
The spokesperson said there
has been “significant” interest
from potential applicants in
Christchurch, but would not give
an exact number.
Middlemiss is Waimāero
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board’s chair, while
McMahon is Waitai Coastal-
Burwood-Linwood Community
Board chair.
Independent Citizens and
People’s Choice are currently
undertaking candidate selection
processes for the October election.
The People’s Choice ward and
community board candidates
will be revealed in the next few
weeks with the Independent
Grower bidding farewell to flowers
capital value of about $1.2 million.
Gunn loves his work and finds
satisfaction in delivering flowers
for special occasions like weddings
and funerals.
“Having mothers and daughters
come out here to pick out wedding
flowers is just great,” he said.
He started growing and selling
flowers in 2001 after nearly three
decades of selling mostly apricots,
plums and celery.
“I was able to turn my hobby
into a business and I just love it,”
he said.
Gunn’s father, Donald, bought
the land in 1949 from the Hill
family using a government rehabilitation
loan for returned World
War 2 servicemen.
The Hills had settled on the
property in 1917, and it has never
been publicly listed for sale – until
now.
Horotane Valley is known as a
“sun trap” ideal for stone fruit like
apricots and plums. Gunn said the
area thrived after the war until the
mid-1960s when new people took
over some farms and “lacked the
skills” to make a profit.
“Where we are positioned in
the valley is quite unique. We get
sun all day and there’s no shadow.
With the right skills you can grow
very well out here,” he said.
After the death of his father,
Gunn bought out the shares in
the farm held by his mother and
two sisters in 1979 and continued
growing the farm’s legacy.
Facing tough times with produce,
he switched to flowers – a
move that paid off.
Over nearly 25 years, Gunn has
built a successful flower growing
business with his produce
available at community markets,
florists and grocery stores across
the country.
Gunn also enjoys donating
flowers for good causes.
“We make little arrangements
for sick children and families at
Ranui House. I get a lot out of that
personally,” he said.
Gunn and his wife will continue
to live in their home next to the
farm, which has been divided off
from the farming property which
is being sold.
The property includes two
greenhouses, two sheds, and a
pump house. It also has a rare
resource consent – the only property
in the valley without an existing
house to have one – making it
easier for a new owner to build.
“This is a rare chance to build
in one of Christchurch’s most
sought-after locations,” said real
estate agent Lynton Hubber.
Gunn hopes a buyer will carry
on the flower business, but it is not
a deal-breaker for a potential sale.
The sale is live from today with
a deadline sale set for May 20.
growing business and selling
Incorrect summary
sees sentence cut
for restaurant owner
• By Al Williams
A RESTAURANT owner who
sold toxic food to customers and
directed the recalled product
to be eaten by her staff has
received a reduced penalty after
she was sentenced on the wrong
summary of facts.
Xinchen Liu, owner of
Samurai Bowl on Colombo
St, was originally sentenced to
six months’ home detention
and fined $30,000 for her role
in failing to ensure food in her
restaurant was safe and suitable
to eat.
The courts found she was
also reckless as to whether
that failure created risk to lives
when she directed staff to retain
recalled meals and contravened
the Immigration Act by employing
staff who were either meant
to be working elsewhere or not
lawfully entitled to work in New
Zealand.
Now, that sentence has been
amended after she reappeared
for resentencing in the district
court where Judge Raoul Neave
said he was operating off the
only summary of facts he had
available that day, but it was not
the correct one.
While the first summary of
facts looked “worse” than the
agreed one, the judge said he was
not sure whether it would have
made a difference to his starting
point for sentencing.
“I’m not proposing to make
a significant change, I’m not
blaming anybody, but somehow
it happened, I only had the one
summary.”
Defence lawyer Grant Tyrell
said it was appropriate to emphasise
the impact (of having the
wrong summary used) on his client,
given the matter was always
going to attract media attention.
Judge Neave said he was not
convinced if there would have
been any difference to the outcome
had he been provided with
the correct summary of facts.
A modest adjustment would be
made because of the appearance
of justice, he said.
This report was produced by
Open Justice – Te Pātītī, an
NZME initiative funded by
NZ on Air
SENTENCE: Samurai Bowl
owner Xinchen Liu who sold
toxic food to customers, has
had her penalty reduced
after she was originally
sentenced on an incorrect
summary of facts.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
The home detention sentence
was reduced by two weeks to
five-and-a-half months.
Judge Neave had originally
fined Liu $20,000 plus $149 court
costs for the Ministry of Primary
Industries related charges and
$10,000 plus $149 court costs for
the Ministry of Business, Innovation
and Employment related
charges.
The Ministry of Primary
Industries related charges were
reduced to $15,000 plus $149
court costs while the Ministry
of Business, Innovation and
Employment related charges
remained at $10,000 plus $149
court costs.
When unsafe levels of staphylococcus
aureus were detected
in samples of frozen food at
Samurai Bowl on Colombo St,
posing a risk of food poisoning
to customers, authorities ordered
owner Liu to recall and destroy
all ramen meals.
Instead, she directed staff to
repurpose the ingredients –
some of which were served to
customers and others were given
to staff as meals while on duty.
Judge Neave originally sentenced
Liu on April 8.
He also gave permission for a
copy of the summary of facts to
be released to the media, which
was used as the basis of a article
run by NZME. It was only when
the article was published, the
discrepancy between the summary
of facts was noticed by
Liu’s lawyer.
After the resentencing, Tyrell
said Liu reiterated her apology
provided to the court for the
mistakes she has made and
accepted through her guilty
pleas.

NEWS 11
Welcoming dawn above the plains
Ballooning started in
France in the late 1780s.
Reporter Sam Coughlan
got a taste of why it is
still popular
CLOSE TO 5000-feet above the
ground in a hot air balloon is not
where I thought I’d be at 7.30am
on a work day.
But here we are.
Everything is peaceful and
quiet – save for the occasional
blast of gas keeping us in the sky,
and chief pilot Michael Oakley
chiming in with fun facts about
the landscape and his ballooning
adventures.
Getting to this point took a
bit of effort, but it was absolutely
worth it.
It started with a 4.30am alarm
to give me enough time to drive
from Christchurch to Oakley’s
farm near Hororata, where his
business, Ballooning Canterbury,
is based. By 6am, we were ready
to go.
There were 12 of us, plus Oakley,
and we piled into a van that
took us to Glentunnel Domain.
With the sun beginning to rise,
it was time to set up the balloon,
with everyone pitching in.
Set-up requires unrolling the
balloon from its bag, before two
big fans blow cold air inside while
two of us hold the entrance open.
Once the balloon is partially
inflated, the burners are fired up,
heating the air inside. We climb
into the basket as the balloon fills
with hot air and starts to rise.
FLYING HIGH: Up-and-away over the Hororata golf course with the occasional roar of the burners
and chat from pilot Michael Oakley the only sounds. PHOTOS: BALLOONING CANTERBURY
Before I know it, we are away,
floating above the trees and heading
towards the Hororata golf
course.
The views are incredible.
With the Canterbury Plains
sprawling beneath us, Oakley
mentions visibility is about
200km today – it’s easy to tell.
To the west is Mt Rolleston;
STUNNING: The flight offered amazing views of the district,
including the sun rising over Coalgate and the Selwyn River
winding into the distance. PHOTOS: SAM COUGHLAN
looking south, we could see the
mountains near Lake Tekapo.
Oakley said if we were just a little
further over, we’d have a clear
view of Mt Cook, too.
Directly below us now is
Coalgate, and to the left are the
hills – once home to coal mining
operations – that gave the township
its name.
In the other direction, we could
spot Lake Ellesmere shimmering
in the distance.
As we climbed close towards
5000-feet, the ground became
a blur. Aside from Coalgate, it
was hard to make out any towns,
though Oakley pointed out the
Fonterra factory near Darfield.
Everything is so peaceful.
According to Oakley, it was
the perfect morning for a flight
– clear skies, gentle winds, and a
gorgeous sunrise.
He’s been flying since the late
1990s and has operated Ballooning
Canterbury since 2012, so I
trust his judgment.
We touch down in a grassy
paddock just after 8am and pack
the balloon away – rolling it up
and squeezing the air out – before
packing it into a bag and sharing
a glass of champagne to toast the
adventure.
The bubbly is a tradition
dating back to the 1780s, Oakley
explains.
In the 18th century, hot air
ballooning was a groundbreaking
science. Because most had never
heard of or seen a hot air balloon
before, many onlookers were
afraid and would often attack the
balloons with pitchforks.
The first balloonists brought
champagne with them to offer
farmers whose fields they landed
in – an offering to assure them
they were harmless. The bubbly
smoothed things over and the
tradition stuck.
Today, champagne is still
offered after balloon flights all
over the world.
Oakley tells me flights are
“365 days a year, if the demand is
there”.
With the Hororata Glow
Festival on May 10, he’s hoping
to have balloons flying every
morning that week, offering
passengers a glimpse of the many
colourful balloons visiting the
region for the event.
Former top lawyer creates board game
• By Kees Chalmers
FROM BUSINESS lawyer to
board game inventor, Simon
Mortlock has made quite the
post-retirement shift.
The inception of his board
game, Red Herring, came from
seeing the card game, Exploding
Kittens, last year.
“I thought, now that’s a stupid
game.
“If someone can make money
out of a card game like that, then
surely I can make a board game
as well,” Mortlock said.
Red Herring is a strategy game
played by four to six people.
The object is to be the first to
construct your own jetty in one
hour.
Mortlock designed the game
in a fundraising effort for the
Governors Bay Jetty Restoration
Trust. He is the trust’s current
patron and its former chair.
“If you haven’t got it, you’ve got
to make it,” he said.
Mortlock was a lawyer for 53
years and a founding partner
at Mortlock McCormack Law
before retiring in 2021.
His lawyer’s skills translate to
the game, where strategy and
managing risk are crucial to
winning.
Mortlock, who lives in Governors
Bay, compared the game
to Monopoly but said it is more
complex.
The board is a map of Lyttelton
Harbour with 36 different locations
around the bay labelled in
English and Te Reo, designed
by Governors Bay artist, Russ
Harris.
“It’s a staggering amount of
detail and there’s very fine craftsmanship,”
said Mortlock.
Each player is given a coloured
jetty and 20 planks worth of differing
points to start the game.
Players gain more planks when
they complete a circuit or land
on certain locations.
Players can take planks from
other players and use them
strategically to decide whether to
build their jetty first or maximise
their points.
It took Mortlock six months to
iron out the rules while Harris
designed the board.
“We played it over and over
and over again to perfect it.
“I’m really thrilled with
the quality of the outcome,”
Mortlock said.
The Caxton printed version
costs $90 while the limited edition
handcrafted board costs
$345.
Forty-nine handmade copies
and 33 Caxton printed versions
have sold so far.
Mortlock is meeting with
retailers this week to get Red
Herring into stores.
“It would be great if it took off
and help raise a lot of money for
charity,” he said.
The commemorations
Zealand Army Corps’ Gallipoli
campaign during WW1. It is
also a day to remember those
New Zealanders and Australians
who fought in wars around the
world.
The red or Flanders poppy
bought in the lead-up to Anzac
Day was one of the first plants
to grow on battlefields in the
Belgian region of Flanders.
In 1921, the Returned Servcies
Association planned to hold
its first Poppy Day appeal
just before Armistice Day in
November, as other countries
were doing. But when the
shipment of poppies from France
arrived too late for the scheme
ANZAC DAY
to be properly publicised, the
association decided to wait until
Anzac Day 1922. The poppy day
appeal was a huge success and
has continued ever since.
In 1931, New Zealand started
making its own poppies. A new
style was introduced in 1978 to
replace the cone-shaped flower.
“At last we have a poppy that
looks like the Flanders poppy,”
RSA secretary Joe Green told
The Press.
The new poppies could be
snapped together on small hand
presses, and more than twice as
many could be fashioned from
the same amount of material.
That year, a team of 20 war
widows and pensioners made
1,300,000 poppies, with the
Christchurch RSA producing
poppies for the whole country.
NZ’s poppies continue to be
made in the city, except for a
three-year stint in China.
Rowers bound for Lithuania
• By Jack Ward
FOUR ROWERS from
Cashmere High and St
Margaret’s College are set to
wear the silver fern for the first
time in Lithuania.
Coswain Eliza O’Meagher and
rowers Eleri Clare, Aine Leeson
and Coco Flood will represent
New Zealand at the under-19
world championship regatta in
Trakai from August 6-10 after
featuring in the national trials
last week at Lake Karāpiro.
Cashmere’s O’Meagher will
cox the men’s eight and Clare
will be part of the women’s quad.
St Margaret’s students Leeson
and Flood will feature in the
coxless four.
Said O’Meagher: “I haven’t
wrapped my head around it fully,
feeling very excited.”
She said the trials finished
at 8.30am on Saturday and the
crews were announced later that
morning.
“We were all hanging around
the lake for two hours nervously.
“The cox is named last for the
men’s eight, after my name was
called for about 30 seconds, I was
out of body and stopped listening
until they called Eleri’s name.”
O’Meagher said she found the
trials beneficial.
“It taught me how to speak
with these boys and treat them
like the girls I’ve been rowing
for over season. Taking feedback
from the coach encouraged me
to speak a bit more and be more
vocal.
“The boys said they enjoyed
the controlled silence too –
having a few strokes and listen
for that one catch then I would
speak again.
“It was about bringing everyone’s
rowing together. You
see different techniques but the
fundamentals of rowing are the
same,” O’Meagher (right) said.
The quartet will head back to
Lake Karāpiro on June 15 for a
six week camp before departing
for Lithuania.
“Now it is making sure my
study is all under control so it is
just rowing,” O’Meagher said.
They said it
“After all these
years, it’s still
embarrassing
for me to
play on the
American golf
tour. Like the
time I asked my caddie
for a sand wedge and he
came back 10 minutes
later with a ham on rye.”
Code-hopping Lam becomes a Magpie
• By Sam Coughlan
HORNBY PANTHERS hooker
Joel Lam has continued his
switch from rugby union to
league, joining Brisbane club
Souths Logan Magpies.
The 22-year-old former halfback
played two games for the
Panthers this season after making
the code change.
Lam previously captained
Burnside in the Metro rugby
competition, was part of the
Crusaders academy and earned
one Super Rugby cap.
Panthers head coach Corey
Lawrie wished Lam the best,
saying he had been great to
work with.
“ The second game (for the
Panthers) he played real well.
Some real big carries for us
towards the end of the game,”
he said.
“He’s a bit of a competitor, I
think that’s his best attribute.”
Lawrie expects Lam, who left
Christchurch last week, to start
in the Magpies’ reserve team –
still at a higher level than the
Canterbury competition.
“ He’ll start with the BRL,
which is one below Queensland
Cup, which is probably a couple
levels above our premier grade.
“He might get a shot this
year, if he plays a couple of Q
Cup games, he’d take that as a
success.”
While excited for Lam’s next
chapter, Lawrie admitted his
absence is felt as the Panthers
battle injuries.
“ We could do with him right
now. That’s way the system
goes, just lacking a wee bit of
firepower.”
brings more glory to Cashmere
• By Sam Coughlan
LEVI FRANKS has become
Cashmere Croquet Club’s secondever
world champion, and the first
to achieve the feat while actively
playing at the club.
Franks won the U21 GC (golf
croquet) World Championship
in Florida last week, defeating
English player Jack Good – the
world’s top-ranked U21 player – in
the semi-finals before beating 2023
finalist Fawzy Helmy of Egypt in a
thrilling final.
In the best-of-five final, Franks
took the first two games 7-2 and
7-5, then edged Helmy 7-6 in the
third to seal his first world title.
Franks joins 2018 World
AC (Association Croquet)
Championship winner Paddy
Chapman as a world titleholder
from Cashmere.
Chapman grew up playing at
the club but was based in England
at the time of his win and now
lives in Waikato.
Accepting his trophy, Franks
described Cashmere as “the best
club in the world”.
“Thanks to all the members
there who have helped me be who
I am over the years.
“Special shout out to (friends
and club-mates) Josh (Winter),
James (Duggan) and Myles
(Duggan) and our coach Gay
(Jones) – couldn’t have done it
without you.”
Franks is currently in Sydney
with Winter and Myles Duggan,
to compete in the Fletcher Sharpe
U35 Invitational at the Cooks River
club.
United’s Paul Kaiser and Jason
Hodgett are also in the tournament
which ends on Sunday.
From boxing to rugby league,
and now the beautiful game
Sports journo Sam
Coughlan has been in
the boxing ring, trained
with champion rugby
league team Hornby
Panthers and today he
reports on his session
with Christchurch
United. Not that
roundball is foreign
to him – he is a fairly
useful goalkeeper in his
own right
WHO PLAYS football at seven in
the morning?
That was my exact thought as
I arrived at the United Sports
Centre in Yaldhurst with the sky
still dark and the birds are yet to
start chirping.
To make matters worse, I was
told we would not be training on
the two artificial turfs the club
owns. Instead, we head for the
dewy, soggy grass fields at the
back of the facility, to help the
team prepare for their pre-season
clash in Blenheim the next day.
That came back to bite me. Midway
through a quick six-a-side
game, I tried to change direction
and ended up on my backside.
I was more nervous for this
session than others I’ve joined for
this series.
With other codes, I had no expectations
going in, but football’s
a different story. I’ve played since
I was six, so part of me hoped I
could hold my own.
Fortunately, I didn’t feel totally
out of place – even at a club like
United, who finished third in the
Southern League last year and
won it the two seasons before. I
leaned on my years of experience
to try to keep up.
That said, being a goalkeeper
hasn’t exactly prepared me for
the amount of running, passing
and shooting outfield players do.
Keepers, you know what I mean.
It was quick, really quick.
One drill had us in a tight space
with two defenders trying to win
SPEED: Coughlan evades midfielder Daniel Meyn and lines
up a shot, which was wayward. He said he was “off-balance”.
SHOT OFF: Sports reporter Sam Coughlan tries to find the back of the net past goalkeeper
Ben Graney.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
possession from five attackers. I
got caught out a few times trying
to play the ball under pressure.
Later, we moved to shooting
drills and with plenty of encouragement
from my new teammates,
I managed to find the back
of the net past goalkeeper Ben
Graney on a couple of occasions,
exchanging passes with another
player before being sent through
on goal.
It’s not something I’m used
to. By my calculations, the last
outdoor goal I scored was back in
primary school.
While I didn’t quite earn myself
a contract offer from head coach
Ryan Edwards, I’m confident I
didn’t completely embarrass myself.
Hopefully.
But it wasn’t all close control
and clinical finishing.
In a seven-a-side game to finish
the session, I found myself oneon-one
with the keeper again,
only to smash my shot into the
crossbar.
That’s also when I lost my footing
on the wet grass trying to turn
quickly. Classic.
Thankfully for my ego, there
didn’t seem to be any sense of
frustration at my lack of skill, or
questions of “who is this guy?”
Just a few smiles and, I suspect,
a collective effort to stay in the
reporter’s good books. Smart lads.
Surprisingly, the early start
didn’t feel so bad by the end of
the training session. I had done
a solid hour of exercise, and it
wasn’t even 8.30am yet.
Maybe these morning workouts
aren’t such a terrible idea after all.
• Next week Coughlan
returns to the oval ball
when he joins Metro rugby
champions Linwood Bulls
for a training session
Thursday April 24 2025 The Star 17
Omoda C5: A stylish
newcomer punching
well above its weight
THE LAST 18 months has seen
a string of new Chinese vehicles
with names and models many of
us have never heard of hitting our
market, and are almost certain
to continue to gather in size and
pace.
What sort of reception these
‘newbies’ achieve, several with
almost zero brand recognition
here will be intriguing, but the
Chines automotive juggernaut is
determined to grab its share of the
new vehicle pie in this country.
Their game plan appears simple.
It’s built around delivering wellmade
and specified models with
long new vehicle warranties that
collectively gain buyer acceptance
and market share.
It’s a high risk and reward
strategy, but success beckons
for this wave of unknowns who
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
execute this plan well, as people
are always after value for money
new vehicles, a box many of these
brands put a sizeable tick against.
The Omoda is part of Chery
Automotive who dabbled in our
market about a decade ago with
some cheap but utterly forgettable
models.
The company has used their
time away to get their vehicle
design and engineering house in
order, and they needed to.
One major achievement has
been its hugely successful joint
venture with Volvo to develop and
build the EV Polestar.
This handsome and powerful
urban SUV launched in 2022 and
was an instant hit. However, like
other carmakers, it has been hit
hard by a sharp global decline in
EV sales.
Since its launch here last year,
the Omoda has made a positive
start for a new kid on our crowded
automotive block, off the back of
its smart looks and pricing C5
priced from $29,990 for the entry
level 1.5-litre turbo C5BX.
Strong value for money is a
constant across the C5 family with
the swift 1.6-litre turbo GT variant
retailing for $37,990 in 2WD form,
while the AWD version which
features in this road test is a steal
at $39,990.
The Omoda C5, a mix of
hatchback and urban SUV,
spearheads the brand’s push into
our market with two conventional
turbo charged petrol motors.
A 1.5-litre 108kW and 210Nm
turbocharged petrol engine fires
up the entry level BX. However,
I reckon most buyers will zero in
on the extra power and pace of the
GT with its lusty 147kW backed up
a healthy 290Nm is the star of the
C5 show. EV variants are available
from $47,990.
For the money, this is a practical,
roomy and unexpectedly good
Ratings out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 7; Build Quality 7;
Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Value for money: 8;
Styling 6; Safety – Five star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
looking, and for me, one of the
more stylish Chinese models on
our market. A large bright lattice
like grille is bold and could be
divisive, but hit the ‘like’ button
for me.
When you are a new player
like Omoda trying to break into
a crowded new vehicle market,
getting noticed by buyers means
being extra creative. It often
requires being visually brave,
and that is precisely what the
C5 does with its frontal design
and unconventional, but wellproportioned
lines.
They say fortune favours the
‘brave’ and it has for the C5 which
has made a real impact since its
global launch, sending a strong
message to rivals that isn’t just here
to make up the numbers.
This vehicle surprised, in a
good way, on multiple levels.
One is the performance of the
147kW 1.6-litre turbo engine,
which for the money is strong and
responsive across the rev range
with serious low-speed pulling
power, that shades any other
vehicle I have driven under $40K.
Just a few years ago, there would
be few who would have thought a
Chinese car maker could design
and produce a motor of this
calibre.
The C5 is proof they have, and
created a fun driving car with an
engine bristling with energy, eager
to please, and smooth and refined
as they come.
They have an engine that’s
going to build a positive vibe for
the brand here, it’s that good. Not
far behind is the accurate and
rapid fire seven-speed automatic
transmission, that apart from the
rare misstep was on song.
If top-notch tech was the
brief for the C5, Omoda has
slam-dunked it. To say the list of
technology is exhaustive would be
underselling it.
GT owners enjoy Apple CarPlay,
Android Auto and wireless
charging front and rear parking
sensors plus a 360-degree exterior
3D camera technology.
This is an incredibly well
equipped vehicle for less than
$40k with LED lighting, adaptive
lighting system and dual 10.25-
inch screen.
Then there is the leather steering
wheel, power sunroof, heated
steering wheel, heated front seats,
red brake callipers and 18-inch
alloy wheels, with an easy to use
the intelligent voice command
system that even a technophobe
like me found easy to use.
The C5 makes a strong safety
showing with advanced driver
assistance systems lead by adaptive
cruise control, lane keeping assist
and autonomous emergency
braking. In fact, most of the
leading edge safety tech that
buyers demand these days comes
with this vehicle.
Both ride and handling are
competitive with most of its
rivals. The suspension is a nicely
balanced and lays the foundations
for an enjoyable drive, along with
the point-and-go steering – only
let down by being on the light
side and a touch short on road
feel. These are easy enough fixes
that would make a good car even
better.
The low-speed ride in town
driving isn’t as well cushioned as it
could be and too many bumps and
ripples in road surfaces are felt in
the cabin.
A FENDALTON home designed
Retired farmers Graham and
Valerie Wells bough the threebedroom
classic more than 20
years ago after missing out on
The three-bedroom, two-bathroom
house is a Warren classic,
with two parallel pavilions linked
by a third smaller block, all with
“I think we were very lucky
in getting this one. This one has
the stream boundary and the
one on Glandovey Rd didn’t, and
it was terribly damaged in the
earthquakes. Whereas ours, it
had damage but it was repairable.
Again, we were just lucky,” she
said.
The earthquake in 2011 destroyed
most of Warren’s masterpieces,
Valerie said they added a wellengineered
glass conservatory
when they moved in, which may
have been one of the reasons the
may have helped hold the wings
together,” she told OneRoof.
The property has been attracting
more attention than
“It just has a charm. I think all
his houses have charm, bu this
one is absolutely beautiful. He
of what it is and where it is.”
Aitken said the property had
been largely untouched since it
was built. The negative detailing,
“If you are a fan of his designs, I
can understand the attraction.”
had undergone upgrades with
the help of Kerry Mason – an
architect who had previously
worked with Warren before the
