Classic home by Sir Miles Warren
survived quake, to be auctioned
A FENDALTON home designed
by Sir Miles Warren is heading to
auction today.
Retired farmers Graham and
Valerie Wells bought the threebedroom
classic more than 20
years ago after missing out on
another Warren creation.
The home has an RV of
$1.8m.
The couple had tried
to buy Warren’s house
on Glandovey Rd but
were pipped to the post.
Luckily, nearby Papprill
House, at 31 Idris Rd, hit
the market a week later,
and the couple pounced.
Valerie told OneRoof: “It
was love at first sight.”
The three-bedroom, two-bathroom
house is a Warren classic,
with two parallel pavilions linked
by a third smaller block, all with
separate pitched roofs, OneRoof
reported.
“I think we were very lucky
in getting this one. This one has
the stream boundary and the
one on Glandovey Rd didn’t, and
it was terribly damaged in the
earthquakes. Whereas ours, it
had damage but it was repairable.
Again, we were just lucky,” she
said.
The earthquake in 2011 destroyed
most of Warren’s masterpieces,
with Papprill House one
of only a handful left standing.
Valerie said they added a wellengineered
glass conservatory
when they moved in, which may
have been one of the reasons the
house survived the quakes.
“It held up beautifully and with
all the steel we had to put in it, it
may have helped hold the wings
together,” she told OneRoof.
The property has been attracting
more attention than
ever following the release of the
documentary Maurice and I,
which tells the story of
the relationship between
Maurice Mahoney and
Sir Miles Warren and
how they redesigned
Christchurch in the 1960s
and 1970s.
Warren devotees had
Miles even knocked on their
Warren door and asked to look
inside.
“It just has a charm. I think all
his houses have charm, but this
one is absolutely beautiful. He
captured the angle of the sun.”
Harcourts Grenadier agent
Alison Aitken told OneRoof: “It’s
been really popular just because
of what it is and where it is.”
Aitken said the property had
been largely untouched since it
was built. The negative detailing,
block walls, internal cavity doors,
joinery, brass fittings and door
handles were still original.
“It’s fabulous – nothing has
been ruined,” she said.
“If you are a fan of his designs, I
can understand the attraction.”
The kitchen and bathrooms
had undergone upgrades with
the help of Kerry Mason – an
architect who had previously
worked with Warren before the
Wellses moved in. The windows
were also double-glazed.

Young Christchurch United footballers
were part of a training camp organised
by George Cowie, a former English first
division player with Premier League club
West Ham. Two training camps were held
at Kakaha Park, Prebbleton, last week.
Organiser and professional coach Malcolm
Fleming said about 70 kids attended from
all over Canterbury. “The idea is to give
kids more opportunities,” he said. “We’re
trying to teach the young players to be
less reactive and do more thinking ahead
when they play.” Training camps were also
held in Palmerston North and Mosgiel.
Select players will attend a camp on the
Gold Coast later this year.

Community groups urged to
submit plans for vacant site

community groups may be the
best way to put a long-vacant Hei
Hei site to use.
The building at 151 and 153
Gilberthorpes Rd in Hei Hei was
declared surplus to requirements
by the city council in 2021 as
part of its 2021-2031 Long Term
Plan.

If no viable proposals are
received by the May 23 deadline,
Rendall said the council will
reconsider the site’s future.

Burglary attempt
at bowling club
Hornby Bowling Club has been
targeted for the second time by
would-be burglars. Club president
John Hannam said nothing
was taken during the attempted
break-in in the early hours of April
13, but the damage will still cost
the club around $200. The club,
which has alarms and CCTV, was
also targeted in February. In that
incident, offenders gained access
and damaged the bar door before
fleeing when the alarm went off.
The club is 127 years old and has
about 100 casual and playing
members across two greens.
Community hub raffle to
raise funds for spotlights
The Halswell Community Hub is
aiming to raise $2000 to replace
30 spotlights in its facility. Project
manager Kate Cleverly said the
current lighting is not sufficient
and affects how welcoming the
hub feels. To help reach the target,
the hub is running a raffle with
tickets available for $2 each. The
draw will take place at 5pm on
May 5. Tickets can be purchased
at the Halswell Community Hub,
381 Halswell Rd.
Big visitor numbers for
community centre
Matatiki Hornby Centre has
welcomed 462,562 visitors in its first
year of operation, up to March 31.
This figure includes visits to the
pools, the library and the customer
service desk.

Increased attendance at
ANZAC Day services

Are you planning to attend one of the dawn services or other events
in your area on the 25th of April? Across the country, many people
gather in the early hours of the morning or later in the day for solemn
ANZAC Day ceremonies. These ceremonies often feature playing the
Last Post, a minute of silence, laying of wreaths, and where veterans,
current service members, and the public march together in parades.
Increasingly, New Zealanders are choosing to show their respect and
gratitude by attending these services.
Why has attendance increased?
In New Zealand schools, the New Zealand Curriculum allows
students to explore the experiences of New Zealanders during
World War I, including the Gallipoli campaign and the significance
of ANZAC Day for New Zealanders. As younger generations learn
about New Zealand’s role in the Gallipoli campaign and World War I,
they become eager to commemorate ANZAC Day.
Visiting historical sites like Gallipoli has also become part of many
young New Zealanders’ overseas experiences. A visit to Gallipoli
deepens their connection to the events commemorated on ANZAC
Day, and on their return to New Zealand, they participate in local
services.

As part of exploring our national identity and learning about New
Zealand’s history, ANZAC Day is a central focus in our national
consciousness. People have the opportunity to reflect on the
sacrifices made by previous generations, honouring their bravery
and resilience, allowing them to appreciate the courage and
determination that shaped our nation.
New Zealand society is now diverse. Nowadays, community ANZAC
Day events and commemorations have evolved to be more
inclusive. This inclusivity encourages people from all walks of life,
different nationalities and community groups to participate and
learn about New Zealand’s involvement at Gallipoli and more recent
conflicts.
As part of the ANZAC Day services, which honour those who served
in New Zealand’s involvement in World Wars, ANZAC Day now also
acknowledges New Zealanders involved in recent conflicts and
peacekeeping missions. Current global events highlight the continued
contributions and sacrifices of service members today.
Education, overseas experiences, national identity, inclusivity, and
global concerns about peace have helped revitalise public engagement
with ANZAC Day, leading to larger attendances at services nationwide.
