Struggling with dry, dull skin? Check out these

expert tips to unlock and restore youthful skin

As you age, your needs

change — and that includes

your skincare. Gone are the

oily, acne-prone skin issues

of youth. Instead, you’re

now dealing with dry, dull

skin and the onset of lines

and wrinkles.

You can thank collagen

for plump, youthful and

firm skin. But as you become

older, your collagen

levels begin to break down,

which can impact your

skin’s elasticity and lead to

visible creases and wrinkles.

While you can’t stop the

hands of time, you can restore

your collagen levels

with the right skincare regimen.

These four tips below

will help you get started:

1. Cleanse in the morning

and at night.

When making changes

to your skincare regimen,

begin by choosing a good

daily cleanser. An oil-based

cleanser is ideal for mature

skin because it cleans and

hydrates without stripping

the skin of its natural oils,

which is crucial for drier

and wrinkle-prone skin.

Your evening cleansing is

even more important. It’s

crucial to cleanse your skin

of makeup and pollutants

at the end of the day and

prepare your skin for your

nighttime regimen.

2. Don’t skip the SPF.

No matter what stage

you’re at in life, incorporating

SPF products into your

morning routine is essential

for skin protection yearround

— and it’s strongly

recommended by dermatologists.

Even if you don’t stay out

in the sun often, protecting

your face from UV/UVB ray

damage can help prevent

premature aging, sunburn,

skin cancer, and collagen

loss. Choose a product with

SPF 30 or higher.

One option is RoC Retinol

Correxion Deep Wrinkle Daily

Moisturizer SPF 30. Not

only does the product protect

the skin against harmful

UVA/UVB rays, but it immediately

hydrates the skin. According

to the manufacturer,

the product will visibly reduce

the appearance of wrinkles

in just four weeks.

3. Be sure to exfoliate.

Skin cell turnover also

gradually declines as you

age, making it harder for

your body to get rid of

dead skin. This accumulation

of dead skin can make

your face look dry and dull.

Adding an exfoliant to your

nighttime skincare routine

can get rid of those flaky

skin cells, improving the

texture and clarity of your

skin.

While your skin may have

previously tolerated physical

exfoliants like scrubs,

these products may be too

rough on more mature skin.

Instead, opt for a chemical

exfoliant to dissolve the

Lifesaving Information: How to respond to an active

shooter or other attack

By Linda Garner-Bunch, Managing

Editor

Shortly before noon on Thursday,

April 17, 2025, a gunman opened fire

at Florida State University’s Student

Union, killing two and injuring six.

Some students and teachers returned

to class on Monday, while others

opted to “freeze” their grades and

skip the final week of the spring semester.

Today, memorials — including

flowers, balloons, stuffed animals and

handwritten messages — line the sidewalks

on campus.

The Tallahassee community is reeling

from the tragedy.

As the impact continues to ripple

beyond Florida and across the U.S. —

along with the grief and anger is a wave

of trepidation.

Mass shootings and other attacks

are occurring all too frequently, not

only in schools but also at restaurants,

nightclubs, shopping malls, concerts,

parades and other formerly “safe”

spaces.

Is anyplace safe? And how can people

protect themselves in an active shooter

situation or other public attack?

Prepare Yourself for the Unthinkable

According to ready.gov/public-spaces,

there are several types of

mass attacks, including the use of firearms,

vehicles or explosive devices to

cause casualties. Other methods of attack

may include knives, fires, drones

or other weapons.

In some cases, would-be attackers

announce their plans ahead of time,

either on social media or by word of

mouth. Most of the time, however, such

attacks come as a surprise to all but the

attacker.

While we hope you are never in such

a situation, here are ways to prepare

and react in the event of a mass public

attack, courtesy of Ready.gov:

• Stay alert. Always be aware of your

environment and any possible dangers.

• If you see something, say something

to local authorities. That includes

suspicious packages, people behaving

strangely or someone using strange

communications.

• Observe warning signs. Signs might

include unusual or violent communications,

substance abuse, expressed anger

or intent to cause harm. These warning

signs may increase over time.

• Have an exit plan. Identify exits

and areas to hide wherever you go, including

work, school and special events.

• Learn lifesaving skills. Take training

in basic first aid and lifesaving skills

so you can help the wounded until help

arrives.

Survive: Run, Hide, Fight

• Run to safety. Getting away from

the attacker is top priority. Leave your

belongings exit the area, if possible.

Once you’re safe, call 911 and describe

the location, attacker and weapons.

• Cover and hide. If evacuation isn’t

possible, find a place to hide. Put a

solid barrier between yourself and the

threat, if possible — lock and block

doors, close blinds and turn off the

lights. Above all, BE QUIET.

• Fight only as a last resort. When

you can’t run or cover, attempt to

disrupt the attack or disable the attacker.

Be aggressive and commit to

your actions. Recruit others to ambush

the attacker with makeshift weapons

such as chairs, fire extinguishers, scissors,

books, etc. Be prepared to cause

severe or lethal injury to the attacker.

• Help the wounded. First, take care

of yourself. Then, if you’re able, help the

wounded get to safety and provide first

aid. Call 911 when it is safe for you to

do so.

Be Safe Afterward

When law enforcement arrives, keep

your hands visible and empty. Remain

calm and follow instructions. Report to

designated areas to provide information

and get help.

Follow law enforcement’s instructions

and evacuate in the direction they

tell you to go. Listen to law enforcement

for information about the situation.

Share updates as you can with family

and friends.

As time passes, be mindful of your

mental health in the wake of a traumatic

experience. If needed, seek professional

help to cope and recover.

5 Tips for New Pet Owners

Tallahassee Advertiser & Big Bend Classifieds

W elcoming a new pet is exciting, but preparation is needed to provide a loving

home and enjoy the unconditional love.

Prepare your furry friend for a new home with these essential tips for first-time

pet owners.

Choose the Right Pet for Your Lifestyle

Consider your living situation, work schedule and personal preferences. Research

different breeds to find the one that matches your activity level, living space and family

dynamics. Also consider any allergies or sensitivities you or your family may have

as some pets may trigger allergies or asthma symptoms.

Set Up Your Home

Before bringing your new pet home, create a safe and comfortable environment.

Start by pet-proofing your home, removing any hazardous substances and securing

loose wires or cords. Make sure to store cleaning supplies, medications and toxic

plants out of reach. Provide a designated space that includes a cozy bed or crate, food

and water bowls and toys.

Create a Routine

Establish a consistent schedule for feeding, exercise and bathroom breaks. Determine

the appropriate amount and frequency of meals for your pet’s age, size and

breed. Spend quality time with your pet daily, providing attention, affection and

mental stimulation.

Budget for Your Pet’s Needs

Owning a pet comes with financial responsibilities. Consider the costs of food,

grooming, veterinary care, vaccinations and preventive medications. Additionally,

factor in the cost of toys, bedding, litter and other supplies.

Find a Reliable Veterinarian

Regular check-ups and open communication with a local veterinarian can help detect

any potential health issues early and ensure your pet receives the best possible

care. Ask friends, family or neighbors with pets for provider recommendations and

read reviews. Visit potential veterinarians’ offices to meet the staffs, tour the facilities

and ask any questions you may have.

The Jesse Correia Memorial

In 2014 we kicked off the

A segment of the Sports

Additionally, guest speakers

The camp was a huge success!

How to spot fraud, outsmart

criminals and protect yourself

from scams

BY MARTHA WEAVER, Retail Gift Card Association Fraud

Committee Chair

Criminals are smart, and increasingly sophisticated. With

technology and artificial intelligence (AI) at their fingertips, they

are constantly finding clever ways to take advantage of honest,

hard-working Americans. There are a variety of scams criminals

use to steal money, and many are turning to more cunning methods

that involve bank accounts, debit and credit cards and gift cards.

People love gift cards; they’ve been the top requested gift in

America for nearly two decades according to the National Retail

Federation. But while everyday folks love giving, receiving and using

gift cards, unfortunately so do criminals. Just like other payment

methods, criminals use intelligent means of stealing money from

gift cards — but we have some tips for how to spot them, outsmart

the scammers and protect yourself.

Here are our top gift card safety tips:

get asked to send money or pay for another service with a gift card,

STOP and contact law enforcement, even if the fraudster tells

you not to talk to anyone or that a loved one is in trouble. No real

government agency or business will ever reach out and ask you to

pay them with gift cards — and you can’t pay taxes or bail money

with gift cards.

card hasn’t been tampered with. Look for things like ripped or torn

packaging or missing scratch-off material over the top of the PIN

number. If something doesn’t look right, pick another card and

show the questionable card to a store associate.

of your purchase.

that’s too good to be true, like a big discount on a gift card, it’s likely

a scam or you’re getting a fraudulent card.

or PINs with people you don’t know.

If you think you’ve been scammed or see fraud happening, contact

your local law enforcement or the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint, or

call this toll-free number: 877-FTC-HELP. You can also report IRS

impersonation scams to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax

Administration, visit their website or call 800-366-4484.

The Retail Gift Card Association (RGCA) is a nonprofit trade

organization that represents the gift card industry. The RGCA has

more than 100 of the world’s top brands on its roster. Its mission is

to promote positive gift card experiences among shoppers.

More information about how to have amazing gift card experiences

is available at giftcardsafety.org. Learn more about the gift card

industry at thergca.org.
