From the

Editor

Create a home to be truly proud of as

we delve into colour choices, furniture

picks, design decisions and outdoor

inspo in our Love Your Home Supplement.

East Sussex baker Lacey Ostermann is the source

of this issue’s recipes. If bread is your bag, you must

check out her brand new cookbook, 3 Doughs, 60

Recipes, which is filled to the brim with leavened

goodness. We’ve featured her satisfying recipe

for a sandwich loaf and two alternative ways in

which it can be used, both sweet and savoury.

Both interiors shoots this month are the product

of the joy their owners have derived from getting

creative. Filled with antiques and artworks, see why

a former Captain’s house in Lydd and a refurbished

cartwheel workshop are proving very popular with

the guests who choose to holiday in them.

In expectation of a bit of sunshine, Jo Fairley

has softened the skin-exposure blow with her edit

of body products that are perfect for prepping dry

winter skin for transitioning to summer.

Plus, things are gearing up for Wealden

Times Midsummer Fair next month!

To find out who’ll be exhibiting at

beautiful Hole Park, and to get ahead by

booking your tickets, be sure to visit

Kent Management Consultancy

Celebrates 30-Year Anniversary

The year 2025 marks a significant milestone for Millennium Consulting

as the Kent-based company celebrates 30 years of supporting organisations

worldwide with finance transformation programs.

To mark this special occasion

an event will be taking place

at the Hythe Imperial Hotel

where employees, supporters and

partners will be invited to celebrate.

A visionary beginning

Millennium Consulting was founded

by Kent businessman Philip Keet in

1995. Phil’s vision was shaped by his

early career in financial services in the

City of London, where he developed

a keen interest in technology-driven

change to support commercial success.

Recognising the urgent need for

businesses to prepare for the muchanticipated

Y2K (the “Millennium

Bug”), Phil set up Millennium

Consulting to help organisations

implement Y2Kcompliant software.

Pre-internet and email, business

development relied heavily on faceto-face

meetings, phone calls, letters,

faxes, and trade publications.

Growth and global expansion

As Millennium grew, the team

relocated to Prince Rupert House near

Cannon Street. This move coincided

with an expansion of the company’s

portfolio of software products and

a solidifying reputation as a trusted

partner in finance transformation.

As Y2K-driven demand subsided,

Millennium shifted focus to

improving business processes and

deploying software solutions globally.

Consultants were assigned to projects

across the continents, with on-site

work a key aspect of operations.

The rise of e-commerce enabled

Millennium to acquire a broader

range of clients and integrate financial

and e-commerce platforms.

Adapting to challenges

In 2008, Millennium made the

strategic decision to relocate from

London to Hythe, driven by a

commitment to recruit talent

from and give back to Phil’s local

community. The company now also

operates a European subsidiary in

Milan, reflecting its international

presence and continued growth.

Building strong partnerships

Millennium has established

partnerships with leading software

companies, including Unit4, IFS,

Xledger, Avalara, Icorp, and Trintech.

The partnership with Unit4 has been

particularly fruitful, with Millennium

earning Elite Partner status.

Charitable initiatives

Employees are encouraged to take

time off to support charitable

causes of their choice, such as

beach clean-ups and support for

the Wildwood Trust, Millennium

also supports two charities based

in Kenya: Raising Futures Kenya

and The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust,

An exciting future

Millennium Consulting is committed

to remaining at the forefront

of innovation. The company’s

journey from a small basement

operation to a global consultancy

is a testament to the dedication

of its team, the trust of its clients

and its dedication to excellence.

The company now looks ahead

to the next 30 years of success,

innovation, and transformative impact

on organisations worldwide—while

remaining deeply connected to its

roots in Hythe and the surrounding

areas. Technological advancements

now empower a consulting firm

based in Kent to seamlessly support

clients operating across the globe,

demonstrating that innovation and

local pride can go hand in hand.

Pear Tree Cottage Guide Price £450,000 to £475,000

A unique opportunity to own a Grade II listed cottage in Pratts Bottom

village, which is steeped in local history. It is rumoured in local folklore

that the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin slept in Pear Tree Cottage

and moved between it and The Bulls Head Inn through a tunnel which

was long since bricked up!

This pretty brick and flint cottage, built circa late 1500’s, occupies an

enviable position opposite the village green and has been lovingly

restored by the current owner.

Accommodation comprises two reception rooms, a modern kitchen

with a vaulted ceiling, a downstairs shower room and two double

bedrooms. To the rear is a beautiful cottage style garden with two

paved seating areas and lawn with shrub borders. There is a useful

summerhouse which could be used as a home office or utility area.

This chocolate box cottage retains many original features including

fireplaces, exposed beams and floorboards.

The Craft

We’re looking forward to Sussex Craft Week from 14th to 22nd June, ‘A

New Festival of Making’. Sussex’s geographical location, with its chalky

coastline, rolling Downs and fertile lands has for centuries provided

both the natural resources and inspiration for a thriving craft scene. In

the medieval period, crafts like pottery flourished, particularly in Lewes

and Hastings, where local clay was used to produce both decorative

ceramics and practical items. The region was also home to skilled weavers

and glassmakers. The 18th and 19th centuries saw the rise of more

industrialised craft production, including the iron industry of The Weald.

Making thrived throughout Sussex in the 20th century, as it became home

to the Ditchling Artists, Graffham Weavers and the Bloomsbury Group, as

well as an important place for the Modernist and Surrealist movements.

This rich legacy inspires innovation today. Sussex is the location

of national craft centres West Dean College and Ditchling

Museum of Art + Craft, it’s a hotbed of contemporary craft,

and the hub of the current craft revival. To showcase this

extraordinary talent to wider audiences, Sussex Arts and

Culture Magazine, ROSA, has launched Sussex Craft Week

with an exciting programme of exhibitions, workshops and

events across the region. Find out more at sussexcraftweek.com

July, promising an unforgettable evening

iconic anthems from the legendary 1985

charity concert. Will we hear rousing

renditions of Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are

the Champions, or We Will Rock You? We

can only hope!

without some added spectacle. The Spitfire

The Captain’s House, that one should

feel educated, enlightened and inspired.

Classic and symmetrical on the outside,

the moment you walk through the door of

this grand family home you are met with

an array of artworks and artifacts, curated

by someone who clearly knows their stuff.

The person, or persons, in question were

Nick and Deanna Levinson who, over

nearly 20 years, restored the house and

filled it with their ever-growing collection

of art, furniture and objets trouvés. Nick

Levinson was an acclaimed producer of

the Open University who worked for the

there he met his wife Deanna, who was his

shared a life devoted to the arts as

well as restoring houses and gardens.

“My parents were supposed to

be downsizing,” says their daughter

Selina. “They wanted to be by the

sea and found this house and just

fell in love with it. Although we all

loved the house, everyone tried to

persuade them not to buy it.” As well

as being a substantial and historic

building – the rear of the house has

16 th century origins – it also needed

a huge amount of work. “All of

the houses my parents bought over

the years were labours of love.”

“Mum and dad were

very interested in historic

paint colours and colour

combinations, especially

paints by Farrow & Ball,”

she says. “They spent quite

a lot of time looking at

historic houses such as Knole

and Sissinghurst, and I

guess they picked up ideas

from there,” says Selina

Until this, their last restoration

project, Selina’s parents tended to move

about every 10 years. “Each house we

lived in was very different – when we

were children we lived in a fairytale

cottage in the middle of a wood,

with a menagerie of pets plus ducks,

peacocks, geese, chickens, rabbits…

Later we lived in a Dower House

with turrets and a spiral staircase.”

But it’s the gardens Selina can’t

imagine leaving behind: “Both my

parents were skilled horticulturists

and at every house they moved to

they created amazing gardens.

Huge sash windows are a feature of

nearly every room, with many looking

out over the large walled garden.

Inside the house, every room is a

feast for the eyes: “Dad liked to mix

was very eclectic in his collecting, as

you can see! He really appreciated

art from all over the world.”

It’s hard to know where to start…

sitting room, to stormy seascapes in

the hallway, and fantastical fairytale

scenes in the ‘lady’s bedchamber’.

As well as painted images, that look

almost like a framed picture, perhaps

the most unusual – and remarkable

– is the trompe l’oeil effect in the

hallway, where antique pine panels

are painted to appear scalloped, 3D

and of a more expensive timber.

Although the house is not right on

the seafront, it’s impossible to ignore

its coastal location and the crisp light

from the generous sash windows. The

main house was built by Captain John

Skinner, captain of the militia and

bailiff of the town, and is Grade II

listed. The back of the house, which

dates from the 1500s, gives a flavour

of a classic timber-framed hall house,

while the grander, 18 th century part of

the house reflects Captain Skinner’s

wealth and importance – as do the

painted panels. “Smuggling was rife in

this area,” says Selina. “As with several

houses in the village, it’s said that

there’s a secret tunnel that goes from

the house, underground to the church

– though we have never found it!”

To the left of the hallway, as you

enter the house, is a grand dining

room well-lit by huge sash windows

and with a view to the back of the

house, across the rose garden. The most

striking feature of this room has to be

the huge open fireplace. Kentish

brick in the inglenook is topped by

This page: Across a carpet of oriental

rugs and below a graffiti pice by local

artist, Drew, is Deanna’s light-filled room,

Selina’s favourite place in the house –

“it just has a nice feeling about it.”

43

priceless-magazines.com

Above left: The original paintings and the trompe l’oeil were uncovered and restored when the couple moved in. A carved wooden fire

surround was found in one of the outbuildings by Deanna who restored it and gave it a new home Above right: A detail in Deanna’s en suite

an ornate, carved wood and panelled

surround, with four gilt-framed

panel paintings. “We always had our

Christmas meal in here, or ate in here

if people came to stay,” says Selina.

As with all of the rooms, the paint

scheme is both bold but also inkeeping:

“Mum and dad were very

interested in historic paint colours

and colour combinations, especially

paints by Farrow & Ball,” she says.

“They spent quite a lot of time looking

at historic houses such as Knole and

Sissinghurst, and I guess they picked

up ideas from there,” says Selina.

As for the walls, they are covered

in an array of artworks. “Dad liked

to mix it up… He could have gone

with everything ‘period’ but they had

such broad interests and tastes”. That

said, this room feels a touch more

formal and restrained than elsewhere,

with a collection of Piranesi prints

and portraits on the walls. A huge

oriental rug sets off the parquet

floor to perfection — as they do

in the other downstairs rooms.

The rooms to the back of the house

feel more informal and intimate than

the reception rooms to the front, as

one might expect. “Mum and dad

were often in here, reading by the fire,”

says Selina. We take a look through

into the attached sun room. “My

dad was really into Derek Jarman,

so collected various things on the

beach, like metal and glass, to create

a sort of Jarman-esqe conservatory

and garden. The conservatory looked

really bland and boring – but my

dad’s made it look really fun.”

It’s easy to imagine the couple

sitting by the wood-burner, in this

low-ceilinged part of the house.

Windows all round keep it from being

too dark and decorative touches such

as Murano glass light sconces and

chandeliers add to the mix of eras.

in different types of majolica, ceramics

and glass – and loved going to the

V&A.” A brightly coloured ceramic

cat nestles on the top of a bookcase,

a nod both to their love of ceramics

as well as their love of animals.

A small kitchen to the back of

the house is equally relaxed and

informal and painted in a joyous

yellow – setting off a collection of

blue and white crockery to perfection.

Dressers abound, along with vintage

tins, colanders and jelly moulds. A

Rayburn is the cherry on the cake,

adding a level of cosiness that’s hard

to escape. “My dad put this handle

on the fridge,” says Selina, laughing.

It’s a timber addition that gives the

fairly standard refrigerator a touch

of class. “That was very dad!”

Upstairs, there are more signs

of Nick Levinson’s sense of fun;

his bedroom is filled with brightly

“My dad loved this room as he loved

the built-in wardrobes with fabric

says Selina. Historic bottles line the

window sills. “Mum and dad had a very

good eye for arranging and displaying

items – which is something I think I

have inherited,” says Selina, who at

one time worked in fashion styling.

“These are signs from Africa – my

mum didn’t really like these. She

was a bit spooked out by them!” she

continues. “Dad was a real character,

very driven and very passionate about

things. He was interested in everything.

When we were children he used to go

away filming a lot – but when he was

around we’d always do really fun things.

And he’d bring back amazing presents!”

This page: The staircase continues from

Deanna and Nick’s landing up to a second

up, and underneath they discovered

these paintings and the trompe l’oeil.”

A carved wooden fire surround frames

a more modern fireplace. “They

found the fire surround in one of the

outbuildings – so mum restored it

and put it there.” It works perfectly,

marrying two entirely different eras.

A magnificent wide staircase links all

of the rooms in this three-storey home,

with generous landings on each floor.

As you can imagine, artworks line the

walls, with a Japanese theme between

the ground and first floors. “Dad liked

Japanese prints, as do I,” says Selina, “and

collected quite a lot.” At the top of the

first flight of stairs, is a glittering picture,

reminiscent of Degas’ ballet dancers:

“This was created by a neighbour of ours,

using bottle tops! Dad appreciated naïve

art and works by untrained artists.”

As we walk down the last flight of

stairs, en route to grab a cup of tea

in the back kitchen, my eye catches

something disconcerting in the transom

window over the front door – the

outline of a rat. “Dad put that there,”

laughs Selina. “It’s made of plastic.” My

heart rate lowers and I can’t help but

smile. This house, as well as reflecting

the curious minds, originality and

aesthetic tastes of its former owners

also reveals their warmth and humour.

It’s a very special house indeed.

Digging into my family tree

last year, I discovered that my

great-grandfather was a cart and

coachmaker by trade (from Westerham),

so perhaps it is something in my blood

that finds me utterly charmed by Tara’s

conversion of a cartwheel workshop in

the grounds of her Peasmarsh home.

More likely, it is the wonderfully quirky

and original use of space, as well as the

perfectly appointed whimsical décor

which draws both me and a solid

stream of paying overnight visitors

to the one-bedroomed hideaway.

Despite being in a state of disrepair

when they bought it, Tara instantly

saw potential in the space. “As soon

as we looked at the property, we had

a vision of what we could do with

it,” Tara says. “We loved the heritage

of it and we could see that it was a

great space, so we wanted to keep it

as rustic as we could and not make it

too claustrophobic, with stereotypical

walls losing the open plan feeling.”

Rising Star in Tenterden, Tara is no

stranger to recognising promise in

unusual places. The shop specialises in

antique furniture, eclectic homeware

(alongside fashion and jewellery) and

reclaimed finds, and Tara had ample

opportunity to apply her experience

to the workshop (available to rent on

Airbnb) and spent many months sourcing

characterful pieces to furnish what was

a completely run-down outbuilding

only a few years ago. “We had to do

everything,” says Tara. “It didn’t have

electricity, it didn’t have facilities, it was

just an open workshop carcass! The roof

was good, but all the windows and doors

needed to be changed. My other half is

a builder so he did a lot of the building

work himself, while I went on the

between the spindles had to be a certain width. Tara’s solution was to use traditional balustrading on one side, and floor-to-ceiling-beam copper pipes on the other.

This ensured that the line of sight across the room was maintained and allowed her to incorporate the metal reminiscent of the building’s workshop days

hunt at antiques fairs, constantly finding

things that I knew would work in there.”

Converting the workshop into

a living space was not without its

challenges, lying as it was within the

curtilage of a Grade II listed building.

“With any project, there are always

difficulties,” says Tara. “Sourcing things

at the right price and budgeting is one

major factor. Obviously when you are

doing something for a Grade II listed

property it has to be done to a certain

standard, and you have to go through

the proper planning – from the paint

colour to what you’re doing with the

One Couple - One Solicitor

Due to the emotions involved

in a separation it is

unsurprising that so many

divorces result in conflict.

At ThomasHaywood we

recognise that conflict is not good for the

health of the parties or their children. It

is better to engage in a process that can

be concluded more quickly than going

to court, where the settlement you reach

is a compromise between you, rather

than having something imposed upon

you by a Judge who does not know you

or your family. You will emerge from

the process with a settlement that you

can both live with meaning that your

overall experience of your separation will

be better for you, and your children.

ThomasHaywood established One

Couple One Solicitor as a way of allowing

our solicitors to work with and advise

couples jointly, providing legal advice

to help you to resolve financial matters

or arrangements for your children.

This new way of working comes

after the implementation of the Divorce,

Dissolution and Separation Act which

allows couples, for the first time, to make

joint applications to end a marriage.

Our process will identify your

individual aims and needs and then help

you to narrow the issues between you,

using our experience and expertise to

create a fair outcome without the need

to attend court. By keeping your matter

away from the court process, it means

that you can resolve any issues more

quickly, privately and cost effectively.

If this process is not suitable for

you, we will advise you of the alternative

routes available. If you would like to

discuss this further, please contact

guttering.” However, finding a way to pass building control

while maintaining the open-plan, industrial heritage was at the

heart of Tara’s vision. The stairs proved to be a particular issue,

as she felt strongly about keeping the field of vision clear and

not breaking up the space, but the regulations clearly stated

the requirement for balustrading, and that the spacing between

the spindles had to be a certain width so that children couldn’t

get their heads stuck between them. Tara’s solution was to use

traditional balustrading on one side, and floor-to-ceiling-beam

copper pipes on the other. This ensured that the line of sight

across the room was maintained and allowed her to incorporate

the metal reminiscent of the building’s workshop days.

Looking around, there are little nods to the workspace’s

original use all over the place, but they are subtle enough

to be enjoyed as curios in their own right. From the old

saws on the mantelpiece to the tricycle-style horse toy

next to the sofa to the giant horseshoe-esque wreath

above the kitchen sink, Tara manages to remember

the past without the references being too overt.

Every area of usable space within the small (perfectly-formed)

workshop has been carefully thought out, but never to the

sacrifice of charm. In the kitchen, constructed out of bricks by

Tara’s partner, the work surface makes use of an enchanting and

original find. “We put old, reclaimed pottery boards – as in

the boards that are used to dry pottery on – into the kitchen,”

says Tara. “They were brought over from France and we put

them on the top as the kitchen surfaces.” They also added an

old, salvaged sink (from Symonds Salvage in Bethersden)

This page: A squashy velvet sofa is piled with colourful cushions next to the woodburner. Tara is an expert in sourcing

antique furniture and eclectic homeware, a huge selection of which can be found in her Tenterden shop, Rising Star

and some little curtains underneath to disguise the washing

machine and some storage space. “We made it from the basics

really, and just added from there,” says Tara, noting that

there is something very appealing about maintaining a level

of simplicity, but that certain touches can really elevate the

experience. One such element is an old, folk art, utilitarian

larder cupboard sitting alongside the kitchen surface that still

has its original paintwork. “I was a bit reluctant to put it in

there,” says Tara, “it’s one of my favourite finds. It’s a really

beautiful, rustic, original piece that fits in the space perfectly.”

The bathroom adds another layer of innovation, as Tara

has disguised the partition between the living room and the

bathroom as a ‘building within a building’. She found an

old, reclaimed ‘bar’ window which she added to the internal

wall – this is opaque, but ‘looks’ into the bathroom from the

kitchen. She has also used a piece of corrugated roofing to cover

the internal pitch of the bathroom ceiling, and added a piece

of fabric trim to soften the edging and make it marry with

the indoor space. “I wanted to make it look like an outdoor

building within the building,” explains Tara. “When you’re

in the kitchen you can see the window that goes into the

bathroom, and I’ve used old, reclaimed lights so it looks like

the outside of a building. We also made the sliding barn door

leading into the bathroom out of scaffolding boards, which

fits with the space and also has the quirkiness.” The creative

décor extends into the bathroom itself, where a statue and a

stained-glass window sit alongside a new shower and sink, and

above the bath hangs an old cart-end, imported from France.

The upstairs area has been transformed from an old hay

store, which used to be accessed by a ladder, into a cosy

Tara has used a piece of corrugated roofing to cover the internal pitch of the bathroom ceiling,

space. “I wanted to make it look like an outdoor building within the building,” she explains

and intimate bedroom space. Tara decided to keep some of the

exposed brick at the back of the room, not just for aesthetics,

but also in a nod to the past. “The brick in the bedroom actually

goes down to the log fire below which is where they used to

forge the metal for the cart wheels. This is another example of

maintaining the heritage of the building. I would have loved

more exposed brick, but obviously we have to consider trying

to keep the heat in as well.” The bed, from French Depot

in Hastings, successfully juxtaposes comfort with industrial

aesthetics, using high quality linens for the bed alongside an old

oil bottle lamp. The rest of the room is decorated simply with a

few pictures, but Tara was keen to keep the space free of clutter.

While Tara was passionate about being true to the building’s

heritage, she was equally clear that she did not want to forego

luxury, and the copper bath in the bathroom adds a splash of

decadence. Similarly, in the sitting room, the large, comfy sofa,

the chaise longue and the draped curtain fabrics soften the

workshop vibe, and the crossover between rustic and luxury

makes for a uniquely romantic space. Tara elaborates, “On the

How will I repay my Interest Only Mortgage…

could Equity Release be the answer?

Local adviser, Sarah Ferrell, specialises

in Equity Release and is seeing many

more people considering this as a

solution to their financial problems.

Increasingly, Equity Release is being used

to repay Interest Only mortgages.

In these circumstances the interest has

been paid, often for many years, but the

capital is now due for repayment. Options

for repayment include selling the property

however, for some, a more attractive option is

to re-finance.

The difficulty is that if the borrower has retired,

or is over 70, the options become more limited.

Equity Release/Lifetime Mortgages are often

the most attractive solution if people do not

want to, or are unable to, sell.

Mortgages are highly regulated – does the

same apply to Equity Release? Yes, and there

is a particular focus on Equity Release due to

its long-term nature and the typical customer

base.

Equity Release is regulated under the Financial

Conduct Authority (like most mortgages), and

is also guided by the Equity Release Council.

Any reliable Equity Release adviser should be

a member of the council.

I have always paid my mortgage, and I don’t

want my debt to increase With the majority of

today’s plans a regular payment of interest is

not only allowed, but also encouraged. With a

selection of the newer plans, a reduced interest

rate can be secured in return for a commitment

to continue to make regular monthly payments.

Now I am semi-retired my income has

reduced…is this a problem? The benefit of most

Equity Release/Lifetime Mortgage plans is that,

unlike a traditional mortgage, the underwriting

is NOT based on affordability. Your age and the

valuation of your property are the key factors

when a lender is assessing how much you can

borrow. If you are also able to pay the interest,

so much the better!

Whether you decide to pay interest, or not,

there are benefits/merits to each depending

on individual circumstances. Regardless of the

reasons for considering Equity Release, Sarah

would strongly recommend seeking advice as

to whether this route may be appropriate for

your individual circumstances.

There are many plans to choose from. Finding

the most appropriate option is important to

ensure that your decision is not just suitable at

the outset, but, as far as possible, that it remains

suitable later in life.

Loving your home has to also mean loving the setting it’s in. For tips on

how to show our love for the South East’s glorious natural environment in

our renovations, we speak to Round Wood of Mayfield’s Zac Soudain

Can you tell us a bit about Round Wood of Mayfield?

We offer everything from oak buildings to

terracotta planters, Corten water features and

quality hardwood decking. Using beautiful,

durable materials, we help both trade customers

and homeowners bring their visions to life.

What is the company’s ethos and driving principles?

Quality and value drive everything we do. We

source timber from responsible suppliers and focus

on providing solutions, not just products. We

believe in practical sustainability – our Mayfield

site is heated entirely by our own wood waste

through our biomass system, and we transform

timber residue into wood fuels for sale, ensuring

we use as much of each resource as possible.

You offer many oak products, why?

European oak is exceptionally versatile and

durable, often lasting centuries with minimal

maintenance. Its resistance to insects, fungi, and

weathering suits the British climate perfectly. It

also has unmatched character and deep roots in

our architectural heritage. We also offer larch,

thermo-treated ash, and tropical hardwoods for

cladding and decking, which excel in specific

environments and create distinctive aesthetic

effects with their colours and grain patterns.

We love the natural beauty of the South East. How

can we preserve that while improving our homes?

Choose materials with longevity. Oak structures

last generations, not just years. Work with local

suppliers to reduce transport emissions and

connect with the local landscape. Consider how

you can work with your property’s natural features

– sometimes the most sustainable choice is to

preserve elements rather than removing them.

Your projects blend beautifully with

nature. How do you achieve that?

It starts with respecting each setting’s context.

Natural materials settle into their environment

beautifully, and you can mix materials and

textures. Pay attention to scale to ensure

elements don’t overwhelm the surroundings.

Do you have any favourite projects you’ve worked on?

I love seeing complete transformations. A country

house in Kent stands out. Our oak pergolas and

fencing created garden “rooms” that transformed

a featureless lawn into intimate spaces. I also enjoy

our oak-framed garden offices. One writer’s studio

overlooking the South Downs sits so sensitively

in the landscape it almost disappears into it.

Can you recommend any trends that

have caught your eye this year?

Outdoor living spaces are increasingly becoming

Zac Soudain

true home extensions, with oak-framed rooms,

kitchens, and fire pits designed for year-round use.

There’s also a shift toward “thoughtful rewilding”

– incorporating natural elements with deliberate

structure provided by our oak sleepers and

timber edging. Our Corten steel planters, edging,

and water features are gaining popularity too,

offering contemporary accents with their warm

patina that complements naturalistic planting.

What are you looking forward to at the moment?

Continuing our involvement with local events

like the Heathfield Show and Bentley Wood Fair.

These community connections matter deeply

to me. Living in East Sussex with my wife and

young daughter reminds me daily how fortunate

we are to be surrounded by such beautiful

countryside. Our Mayfield site sits within ancient

woodland, and I feel a profound responsibility

to preserve this heritage. When I think about

the future of the business, I see it through the

lens of what kind of world my daughter will

inherit. I want to ensure that the craftsmanship

and respect for natural materials that defines

Feel good gardens

Front gardens invariably influence first impressions, but they can

impact so much more. Tim Sykes of Gardenproud suggests, “A

nice design for the front garden and entrance will act as a welcome,

but also help your wellbeing. Just think how many times you enter

and exit your front door and how this makes you feel. Nice front

gardens also often lead to better relationships with neighbours and

therefore elevate the overall appeal of the area you live in and the

sense of community pride.” For more advice, contact Tim Sykes

Kerb Appeal

Laura Millar, Bespoke Home Finder

and Founder of Laura Millar, shares

a checklist of how to enhance kerb

appeal...

1. Plants To start, tidy the lawn, trim

hedges, and add vibrant flowers near the

entrance. Then remove weeds from paths

and flowerbeds to keep everything neat.

2. Cleaning Power wash the driveway

and clear out gutters.

3. Lighting Make sure all external

lightbulbs are working.

4. The edges Look at the woodwork

on garden gates, and ensure the edges of

flowerbeds and paths are clean.

5. The Door A freshly painted front

door in a classic neutral shade makes

a striking statement. Add small potted

olive or bay trees by the door to elevate

the entrance, and replacing a worn

doormat is always a good idea.”

so we’re excited to see fresh ways of creating an edgy

urban vibe with a more up-to-date spin on the classic

look. Rencraft’s latest contemporary kitchen display

is a perfect example. The worktop is actually ceramic,

combining a cool aesthetic, metallic Corten steel feel,

and a high practicality that allows for hot pans to

be placed directly on it without any risk of damage.

There is a long row of seating, ideal for family

interaction and entertaining at mealtimes with a casual

tone. The large chef’s peninsula island meanwhile,

is all about functionality, with a sink incorporated

for rinsing, prepping, and plating up. At the end

of the island, a beautiful bespoke butcher’s block

(available separately from Luke Newman) nods to the

freestanding furniture trend and adds some warmth

and contrasting colour with its end grain oak worktop

and hand-painted damson finish. The clever mix of

colours and materials here give the kitchen a throwntogether

casual look that feels industrial but with

oodles of personality. Find out more at rencraft.co.uk

Air Space

Adding the latest tech remains a sure-fire way of

keeping a kitchen feeling modern while also making

it more easy and efficient (and fun) to use. We’ve seen

voice controlled appliances, smart ovens, fancy fridges,

do-it-all taps and now the latest is venting hobs.

Doing the jobs of both a hob and an extractor, they

give you a sleeker look and free up space above your

hob for a more spacious feel at the same time. This

is Novy’s Easy 90 Prestige and it’s £4,799 novy.com

Ladder of Success

For the old-world flair of a library in

your kitchen, add a romantic ladder

to a run of full height cabinetry.

This will make the most of a high

ceiling and keep the eyes venturing

up. Add lighting, internal colour,

warm metals and glass doors to keep

the scheme from becoming too

dark, as achieved in this Higham

Furniture bespoke shaker kitchen.

Invisible Walls

Feature walls with interesting colours or wallpapers can

add a much-needed ounce of flair to your kitchen design,

but what about a wall of glass? According to FineLine

Windows, one of Kent’s most well-respected double glazing

companies, “Full-length windows create an unforgettable

architectural flourish that welcomes the maximum light

inside.” What’s more, a wall of windows or doors can make

the room feel like a part of the outside world – ideal for

glorious summer days in which your kitchen can bridge

indoor living and out. This kitchen extension by Fineline

is a perfect example with its French doors just begging to

be thrown open. Find out more at fineline-windows.co.uk

Dining Room

x

Pull up a chair and feast on some tasty trends to

improve any dining room or eating area

Dining is Fine

“Dine with friends in a dining

room with dark colour drenched

walls and ceilings to elevate the

experience. The impactful and

inspiring look can be enhanced

by adding floor-length curtains in

a textured fabric like velvet for a

moody and magical feel. Dining

chairs need to be fully upholstered

with a gold handle or giant ring

on the back. Alternatively, for open

plan dining areas with natural

light, we recommend an indoor/

outdoor fabric. There has been

a revolution in colour, texture,

pattern and durability in what is

now available. New fabric colour

trends are brown being the new

green and lilac the new pink!”

Personality

Piece

“Select a fabulous accent piece

as a base for your design. At

Trading Boundaries we draw

from Indian influences that

always bring in colour and

texture. This beautiful hand

painted sideboard is £1,275

and it adds rich and vibrant

hues to the mix in addition

to offering plenty of storage.

Add some complementary

pops of colour with some

funky upholstered dining

chairs or a rug under the

table and hey presto – a

cosy and inspiring space that

guests simply won’t want to

leave!” – Tracy Thomson,

Front & Centre

Terrariums, lighting, statues – anything

can be a centrepiece. Surround with

wreaths or garlands, swathes of fabric

or use a mirror as a tray for added

drama and your table will be dressed to

impress! This LED moon decoration is

Curve Appeal

Introduce rounded shapes in your dining area for an organic feel. A round table is

a great way to nail this trend as they have the additional benefit of saving space and

an Arthurian approach to facilitating easy conversation. This Carve table by Bert

Plantagie is sculptural and sophisticated, with its balance of strength with fluid design.

The smooth and sleek Dekton top is ready to face many a dinner party with its

incredible durability and resistance to heat, stains, and scratches. And the modern and

elegant design can be beautifully styled all sorts of ways from minimal ceramics to

layers of bold tableware. Prices start from £2,375 at David Salmon davidsalmon.co.uk

Seasonal

adjustments

Five home improvements that will add

value to your home this spring

With longer days and

improving weather it’s

the perfect time to get

cracking on making changes to

your home.

Large or small, there are so many

options that will do more than make

your place nicer to come home to,

they’ll even enhance its value should

you ever decide to move on.

1. Remake an entrance

Everyone is swayed by first

impressions and when it comes to

homes, the front doors come first.

New doors are an inexpensive way

to smarten up your home in a flash,

make it more secure, and improve its

thermal performance.

Available in UPVC or composite

materials, there is a vast array of

styles and finishes available to suit

contemporary homes and period

properties.

2. Win-windows

With a long design life and much

improved thermal performance,

replacing poor performing windows

with new ones is an obvious

investment in your home.

New materials, designs, colours

and finishes widen the possibilities

for adding to the appeal as well as

the value of your home.

Stylish aluminium frames or

UPVC with special foils and finishes

that match traditional timber both

offer potential for a big uplift in

visual impact.

3. Amazing glazing

Classic, retro, contemporary?

There is timeless appeal in the glazed

conservatory—a multi-purpose space

with unique properties of warmth

and light.

It’s best not to cling to rigid

definitions—a conservatory could be

anything you choose to make of it: a

sunroom, a gallery, a studio, a study,

a breakfast room.

Whatever you decide, adding a

well-designed and constructed room

with quality materials will improve

life at home as well as its value.

4. The race for space

Building an extension used to be

expensive, time consuming and

resource hungry, but new approaches

to design, framing and new materials

for construction have changed all that

Dramatic, contemporary, part

glazed extensions with a range of

roof styles and wide openings to

the garden are much more easily

achievable for less.

Using a system that’s pre-approved

by structural engineers and with

complete management of the

installation process, it is now possible

to build an amazing new kitchen or

living room extension with only one

month on site.

5. All-weather pitch

More in the way of maintenance,

but maintenance that saves you

having to do any maintenance.

Fascias, soffits and guttering, flat

roofing renovation and cladding

options are all quick and worthwhile

investments in the resilience of

your home.

Within the range of new products

available today there are often options

for colour finish or textures so you

needn’t feel like it’s got to be black,

white, or grey.

Win-win furniture

Get the most out of a small bedroom with multi-use furniture. Items like storage ottomans, sofa beds, or

beds with storage, can optimise a small space by reducing clutter and increasing functionality. And they

can add comfort and style too! This elegant Lugano bed from BoConcept will have you sleeping like an

angel. Its modern minimalist look will bring a sense of serenity to the room, and the plinth base and

tufted headboard create a sturdy, comfortable space to sink into. Plus you can lift the mattress to reveal

plenty of storage space, and there is even a hydraulic pump to make it easier to do the lifting. You can

customise it to the size, upholstery and wood you want and prices are from £1,979 at boconcept.com

Strawberries

& cream

A quintessentially English classic,

conjuring up images of summer

picnics and tennis. Penny Ellis,

Head Designer at Bramleys Soft

Furnishings says, “We are delighted

that these little berries are cropping

up in home interiors again! The

strawberry motif has been popular in

design for centuries, possibly due to its

cheerful colour and shape.” Below is

a converted barn project in which

Bramleys Soft Furnishings created

a cute picnic feel by teaming a

glorious Isabelle Boxall wallpaper

If you’ve got it, flaunt it!

We have long seen open shelving trending in kitchens

and living spaces to show off items that deserve a

little limelight, but the same logic can be applied to

wardrobe storage. While some drawers and doors

may hide away more messy bits and bobs, you can

also show off some selected pieces with wall hanging

or clothes rails. This Boho Boutique open wardrobe

is perfect for the job with its beautiful inlay for a

hint of worldly spice and an extra shelf for shoes or

accessories. Use it to display favourite items, for extra

long hanging for coats or special dresses, or to hang

out planned outfits. £325 at Lenleys or lenleys.co.uk

Leigh Witherell

As an artist, my work delves

into the multifaceted and

often contradictory emotions

that define intimacy in its

many forms. My compositions

capture the myriads of human

experiences, portraying

loving relationships, the depths of loneliness,

the shadows of depression, the lightness of

laughter, and moments of deep contemplation.

I am captivated by compositions that convey

a story or a feeling that resonates on a deeper

level, reflecting the beauty, complexity, and

sometimes the stark realities of the human

experience.

In terms of technique, I am an acrylic artist who

uses modern technology as my sketchbook.

This allows me to explore and refine my ideas

before committing them to canvas. By blending

traditional and contemporary methods, I create

unique, thought-provoking pieces that invite

viewers to explore the depths of their own

emotions and connections.

Bathroom

x

Over to the bathroom, we are overflowing with ideas

to make this functional place sing with style

Trending Tiles

Bathrooms are often a bit on the

small side, with most of your space

filled with fittings, so you have to

take advantage of any areas where

you can personalise them. Taking

up no room at all, floors, walls

and ceilings are the place to start.

According to Julie Allfrey, Retail

Manager at Tenterden Tiling &

Weald Bathrooms, “Patterns and

shapes create a focal point and

the right colour and texture can

reflect the light for a natural touch

of brightness and detail. Combine

more interesting tiles with neutral

complimentary ones for a spacious

feel.” So what’s the going look

right now? Julie says, “Green and

blue are trending, along with small

rectangular or hexagon tiles.” For

more info, visit tenterdentiling.com

Smart Storage

“To maximise storage space while

keeping everything organised and

accessible, opt for tall cabinets or

vanities that make the most of

vertical space. You can then add

pull-out shelves or drawers inside for

easy access to items stored at the back

without the hassle of rummaging

through everything. If you’re

aiming for a more open and airy

feel, open shelves are perfect. Stack

neatly folded towels and display

attractive containers of toiletries and

accessories for a touch of elegance

while keeping everyday items

within reach. In drawers, dividers

or organisers prevent items from

jumbling together. Meanwhile the

countertop can be saved for only the

essentials. Here, utilise a stylish tray

to corral frequently used items like

hand soap and lotions. Add a small

plant for an organised yet decorative

touch and you’re all set!” – Craig

Cooper Owner and Director

Brass Tacks

Brassware may be small but its impact on

your bathroom’s look can be mighty, adding

shine, sparkle and personality, while also being

elements that you are constantly handling and

interacting with. But how to choose brassware

that enhances your bathroom’s aesthetic while

also offering lasting performance? Kallums

Bathrooms suggests, “Focus on the finish to

complement your bathroom’s style. Opt for sleek

chrome for a timeless look, deep matte black for

a modern edge, or brushed gold for an exquisite

touch. Antique brass or polished nickel can

add a unique vintage flair. Quality is also very

important, we ensure the highest quality by

stocking leading brands like Dornbracht, Gessi,

Graff, and Samuel Heath, all known for their

superior craftsmanship and durable finishes.” To

collections products visit them at 230 High

Street, Guildford or kallumsbathrooms.co.uk

Outdoors In

Built to survive the elements,

outdoor furniture can be great

in a bathroom. A wooden

bench near the shower can be

used for pedicures or shaving

your legs, a little side table by

the bath gives you somewhere

to put a book, a drink and a

candle while bathing, a storage

box can hold spare towels, or

you may even find lighting

options you prefer in the

outdoors section that still have

the IP rating you need! This

Arch-itecture

Two trends we have loved in recent years – arch shapes and Critall. You can add these

trends to your outdoor space with mirrors, but to make a lasting impression, nothing beats

striking steel arched windows and doors. In the above example by Crittall Windows, the

impressive curve of the arch draws the eye upward, creating a sense of height and grandeur,

while the minimal sightlines and expansive glass panels flood spaces with natural light.

Crittall Windows recommend steel-framed windows and doors as they “make stunning

architectural features, offering a winning combination of elegance, performance and versatility”

reminding us that “beyond their stunning appearance, curved steel windows and doors offer

exceptional thermal efficiency, longevity and security”. Learn more at crittall-windows.co.uk

Cocooning

Comfort

The back of your home is so often the

most opportune area to extend, and the

current key to a stylish extension is to aim

for a timeless look by blending the old

and the new. To balance an upgrade of

modern comfort and space while creating a

timeless charm, TP Improvements, Surrey’s

glazing specialists, suggest you “enhance

your living space with a sophisticated orangery

extension”. Orangeries themselves date back

to seventeenth century Italy, and modern

interpretations can be designed to add a

look of scale and history to the back of

your property. This Orangery extension by

TP Improvements features flush casement

timber-look windows and French doors, for

a traditional look and the Painswick colour

is perfect for a touch of character. On the

roof, an aluminium Atlas lantern lets in an

abundance of natural light and ventilation

with electronic openers for modern-day

convenience. To discover more, visit TP

Imrpovements’ showroom in Leatherhead

or find them online at tpimprovements.com

Interior design is developing a trend

for prioritising comfort with inviting

seating that’s big on space, soft

materials and cloud-like cushions.

It’s no surprise then that outdoor

furniture is headed the same way

with an abundance of loungers and

day beds. And we are seeing them

come with shelters and curtains too

for the ultimate cocooning feel as

well as sanctuary from the elements.

aluminium daybed from Lagoon.

A

Birdie

Little

Stuart Benjamin, director at

Early Birds bespoke building

company talks inspiration,

goals and driving principles

Stuart

Benjamin

is the ‘big

cheese’ at Early

Birds, a bespoke

building company

synonymous with

stunning builds and

renovations that have even been showcased on

Channel 4’s Great British Home Restoration. Still

one of the lads, he likes to ‘muck in’ on-site and

is a big footie fan, though his greatest passions

are life, family and friends. Find out more about

Stuart and Early Birds at earlybirdsltd.co.uk

How did Early Birds first come into

being and can you explain the name?

My Grandmother. She always used

to say, “the early bird catches the

worm”. I’ve always been inspired to be better than

I was yesterday. I come from a one parent family

and was in and out of foster care throughout my

childhood. When visiting my grandmother, I

had a sense of safety and security and her words

inspired me but that one phrase stuck with

me the most. She used to say to me, “if you

didn’t come from a rich family, they must come

from you”. For me I don’t see this in the sense

of wealth, I view being rich as having a loving

family, close friends and a supportive workplace,

and that is exactly what I have. Another one is,

“when you have nothing, you have nothing to

lose,” this is the saying that pushed me to go for

my goals and start Early Birds Renovations.

What is your favourite part of your work?

The people I work with, both those inside the

office and our builders working on our projects.

Do you take the local area of a property

into account on a project?

We are a bespoke company, none of our builds

are simple and straightforward. With all builds,

especially Grade I and II listed buildings, we aim

to keep the integrity of the property. When you

are building a new property next to an older one

for example, we aim to keep everything relevant

to the existing building and the homes around it.

What do you think is the biggest

transformation you’ve worked on?

Our greatest achievement would be building

a bespoke property with an art studio, as this

project was for a couple who were amazing

artists we felt the pressure and responsibility

of creating the perfect home for them – one

that expressed their lives and careers. The result

was out of this world and our clients could

not be more excited about their new home.

What is your advice on how to

face challenges in a project?

Facing challenges is the reason why our

company keeps growing and can achieve our

goals as this helps us be better than we were

yesterday. It’s why we get up every morning,

so we can work harder on bettering our work

and making those mistakes are crucial for

learning. Communication isn’t just important

– it’s essential. When challenges arise, clear

and open dialogue keeps the team aligned and

focused on solutions. We always say, “There is

never a problem that we cannot overcome.”

Do you take the location of a property into

account on a project and if so how?

We do consider the area in which the property is

in because we must have planning permissions,

architects and certainty that it’s okay to do what is

being planned. We try to consider the age of the

house too and use the best materials suited to the

area (especially for listed buildings), match brick

for brick on the exterior, use modern cladding,

and to complement windows and the interiors.

Can you give us any advice on how

to blend the old and new?

For a cohesive look, use modern materials that

match the house’s existing materials. We work

closely with the clients to achieve the desired goal.

What are you looking forward

to for the rest of 2025?

In 2025 we are looking forward to the growth

of the business, the journeys, working with

clients who know our ‘why’, and adding to

our team, introducing apprentices to start

their careers, and talking to students at colleges

and sixth forms to inspire them. We always

welcome feedback so we will also be listening

to our guys and what they think we can

improve on as individuals and as a company,

we can become the best versions of ourselves.

SANDWICH BREAD DOUGH

Makes 1 loaf, 12 slices

Time: 3-3½ hours, depending on proofing times

• 80ml whole or semi-skimmed milk, plus extra for brushing

• 30g salted butter, cut into small cubes,

plus extra for greasing the tin

• 225ml warm water (40-43°C)

• 12g (1 tbsp) instant yeast

• 15g (1 tbsp) honey, granulated sugar or agave syrup

• 500g white bread flour

• 8g fine sea salt

• neutral-tasting oil or softened butter, for oiling the bowl

Mix & Kneading

1. To ensure the liquid

components of the recipe are at

the perfect temperature, place

the milk and butter into a small

bowl and microwave for about

45 seconds. If you don’t have a

microwave, you can combine

the milk and butter in a small

saucepan and gently warm until

the butter has just melted. Stir

until the butter has completely

melted into the milk, then

pour into a large mixing bowl

or the bowl of a stand mixer.

2. Pour in the warm water and

stir to combine. The mixture

should be around 38–43°C

(100–110°F). You can check this

with a digital thermometer if

you wish, or just go by touch – it

should feel warm but not hot.

3. Add the instant yeast and

honey, and whisk until no

lumps of yeast remain.

4. Tip the bread flour into the

bowl, then scatter the fine sea

salt over the top of the flour.

Mix all the ingredients together

with a spoon, or mix using the

dough hook attachment of a

stand mixer until all the flour

is incorporated into the dough

and no dry patches remain. The

dough will look quite shaggy.

5. You have a few options for

kneading, depending on the

equipment available to you. No

matter the method you use, the

dough should feel smooth, elastic

and slightly tacky (but not sticky)

after the kneading is complete.

Kneading with stand mixer:

Continue mixing on a medium

speed with a dough hook

for about 7–8 minutes.

Kneading with handheld mixer:

Attach the dough hook

priceless-magazines.com 94

attachment to your handheld

mixer. Place the dough hook(s)

into the premixed dough,

then turn the mixer on to a

medium speed. Knead the

dough for 7–8 minutes.

Kneading by hand:

Place the dough on a clean work

surface (no flour) and work it

into a large ball. Knead it using

your favourite method. If you

don’t have a favourite method,

you can use my preferred method:

use the heels of your palms to

firmly push the dough away

from you, then pull the dough

back towards you again. Repeat

this motion until the dough

lengthens into a log-like shape;

when this happens, form it back

into a ball and repeat the process

for 8–10 minutes. It may feel

sticky at first, but avoid adding

flour, as it can negatively impact

the consistency of the bread.

Stage 2

First Proof & Shape

6. Remove the dough from the

mixing bowl and lightly grease

the bowl with a neutral-tasting

oil or softened butter. Tuck the

edges of the dough beneath

itself to form a large dough ball

with a smooth top, then return

it to the bowl and cover with

a clean tea towel. Leave it to

proof at room temperature for

about an hour. After this time,

the dough should have risen to

about double its original size,

though it’s worth noting that the

exact time this will take can be

dependent on the temperature

of your environment.

7. When the dough has

finished rising, prepare a nonstick

900 g (2 lb) loaf tin

by generously greasing the

interior with softened butter.

8. Tip the dough onto a clean

work surface and remove the

air by patting it down into a

rectangle. It should be about 25 ×

35 cm (10 × 14 in). Fold in both

shorter ends of the rectangle so

they meet in the middle of the

dough. Starting from the shorter

end, roll the dough as tightly

as possible into a cylindrical

shape. For a more tidy looking

loaf, you can pinch together the

edges of the dough (where the

swirl from rolling is). Place the

dough, seam-side down, into the

prepared loaf tin. If the cylinder

of dough is slightly longer than

the length of the tin, simply tuck

the ends under the rest of the

dough as you place it in the tin.

Stage 3

Second Proof & Shape

9. Cover the tin with a clean

tea towel or some cling film

(plastic wrap) and leave to

proof at room temperature

for 1–1½ hours, or until the

dough has risen about 2.5 cm

(1 in) above the top of the tin.

10. Preheat the oven to 200°C

(400°F). For the best rise, place

a baking tray half-filled with

hot water in the bottom of the

oven as it preheats. This will

create a steamy environment

so the bread can rise to its full

potential, but it’s not compulsory.

11. Brush the top of the loaf

with a little milk or water, then

bake for 30–35 minutes, or

until the top of the bread is

a deep golden brown. If you

added a steam tray to the oven,

remove it after 15 minutes

and finish baking without it.

12. Once baked, remove the

bread from the oven. Leave it

to cool in the tin for 5 minutes,

then run a knife around the

edges of the tin and flip the

bread out onto a cooling

rack. The bread should sound

hollow when tapped on the

bottom. Let it cool completely

before slicing and enjoying.

Optional: When the bread is

still piping hot, you can run

a little pat of butter over the

top of the crust. This will

help to keep the crust of the

bread nice and soft, and will

give it an attractive sheen.

Make it Ahead –

Overnight Sandwich Bread

Making these four adjustments

to the recipe will allow you

to make the dough a day

before you plan to bake it.

• Use less yeast: Reduce the yeast

quantity to 8g (2 teaspoons).

The yeast is reduced because

the dough will be fermenting

for a longer period.

• Reduce proofing time in

the bowl to 45 minutes.

• Refrigerate overnight: After

the loaf has been shaped and

placed into the tin, cover it

with cling film and leave it in

the refrigerator overnight.

• Allow more time for proofing

before baking: The next day,

remove the tin from the

fridge and proof at room

temperature for about 2 hours

before baking as normal. The

dough needs a little extra time

to rise at this stage, since it

will be starting from cold.

Spicy, Jammy Eggs on Toast with Spring Onion Cream Cheese

Serves 1-2, depending on appetite!

These eggs on toast pack a serious flavour punch and can be made within

10 minutes for a quick go-to breakfast, lunch or dinner.

• 2 large eggs

• 2 thick slices sandwich bread (see previous recipe)

• crispy chilli oil, for drizzling

• finely diced chives, to garnish

For the spring onion cream cheese:

• 5 tbsp cream cheese

• 1 tbsp finely diced spring

onions (scallions)

• 1½ tsp finely diced chives

• ⅛ tsp garlic granules

• pinch of flaky sea salt

1. Bring a small pot of water

to a rolling boil and gently

lower the eggs into the water

with a large spoon. Set a

timer for 7½ minutes and

maintain the water at a

rolling boil. Note that the

size of your eggs will impact

how long it takes to cook a

‘jammy’ egg. The sweet spot is

typically 7-8 minutes, so if you

like them on the runnier side,

reduce the timer by 30 seconds.

2. Meanwhile, in a small bowl,

stir together the ingredients for

the spring onion cream cheese.

3. While the eggs are boiling, fill a mediumsized

bowl with cold water and add some ice cubes.

When the timer goes off, remove the eggs from the boiling

water and plunge them into the ice bath to stop them cooking.

4. Toast the bread slices until they’re a deep golden brown. Spread each slice with half of the spring onion cream

cheese. Peel the eggs and cut them into quarters, then smash them slightly onto the toast. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt,

drizzle with crispy chilli oil (as much as you can handle!), and scatter over some chives to finish before serving.

Cinnamon caramel

monkey bread

Serves 8-10

You know the super-soft middle bit of a

sticky cinnamon roll? Imagine a ton of

those prime bites stuck together. When

I tested this recipe, I walked up and

down our road presenting unsuspecting

neighbours with warm, sticky monkey

bread. After politely plucking one

dough ball and tasting it, everyone

quickly took as many as they could

– even our postman couldn’t resist!

You’ll need a 24cm (9½ in) bundt

tin or two 900g (2lb) loaf tins.

• 1 batch Sandwich Bread dough

• 115g salted butter, plus

extra for greasing

• 215g soft light brown sugar

• 1 tbsp ground cinnamon

• 120ml double cream

• ½ tsp vanilla extract

Tip: If you’d like to enjoy this at

brunch, you can assemble it the day

beforehand. After all the dough balls

have been coated and placed in the

tin, cover tightly with cling film and

refrigerate overnight. Remove from the

refrigerator the next morning and let

it rest at room temperature for about

1½ hours before drizzling with cream

and baking as instructed below.

1. Prepare the Sandwich Bread dough

up to the end of step 6 on previous

pages. While it is proofing in the bowl,

prepare the bundt tin (or loaf tins) by

greasing with softened salted butter.

2. Mix together the brown sugar and

cinnamon in a medium-sized bowl.

Melt the butter in a small bowl in the

microwave, or in a small saucepan

over a low heat. Set aside to cool.

3. When the dough has finished

proofing, tip it out onto a clean work

surface and pat it down into a 20cm

square. Using a sharp knife or pizza

cutter, cut the dough into a grid of 64

pieces, by cutting 8 evenly sized strips

in one direction and then 8 strips

crossing over in the opposite direction.

4. Roll each piece of dough into a

ball using the palms of your hands.

5. Dip one dough ball into the melted

butter and let the excess drip away,

then roll it in the cinnamon sugar

until fully coated. Place the coated

dough ball in the prepared Bundt

tin and repeat with the remaining

dough balls, arranging them close

together in the tin in two layers. It

takes a little while, but I promise

it is worth it! If you don’t use all of

the butter and sugar, sprinkle the

leftovers over the top of the assembled

monkey bread before its final proof.

6. Cover with a clean tea towel or a piece

of cling film and leave to proof for about

1 hour, or until the dough balls have

risen almost to the top of the bundt tin.

7. Preheat the oven to 180°C and set

the rack in the

middle.

8. In a bowl, mix

the cream and vanilla

extract together, then

drizzle it evenly over the

top of the monkey bread.

9. Place the bundt tin on a large

baking tray (in case any sugar spills

over the

sides as

it cooks),

then bake

for 32-36

minutes.

The tops

of the dough

balls should

be golden brown

and you should notice caramel

bubbling around the edges of the tin.

10. Remove from the oven and leave to rest

for 5 minutes, before placing a large dinner

plate or tray over the rim of the tin and

inverting it to release the monkey bread. If

you wait too long to do this, the caramel

may solidify and make it too sticky to release.

11. Some of the caramel may have

accumulated at the top, so use a spoon

to spread

it evenly

over the

top and

sides of the

monkey bread.

Allow to cool

for a few minutes

before devouring

warm with those you love!

If you find yourself with leftovers, wrap

tightly in cling film (plastic wrap) and

store in the refrigerator for up to

two days. Microwave for 15-

20 seconds before enjoying.

Beauty

Bareable

Bodies

Josephine Fairley shares her bodycare tips and tricks

for getting skin prepped for exposure!

The tights-off season came early in 2025, catching many of us by surprise. I

actually first cast aside my opaques for several days in March – the earliest

bare-leg days that I can remember, in any year. Yes, they went back on

again for quite a few days when the wind appeared to be blasting straight from

the Tundra – but this episode reminded me that as we emerge from beneath our

Heattech thermals, skin is in definite need of some TLC, in order to be bareable.

Not only has central heating stripped skin of moisture, by creating an

arid indoor atmosphere – but did you know that your clothes actually

worsen the problem? They literally wick hydration from the surface of

your body – which explains why, odds-on, your body’s almost certainly

looking parched and papery, right now. So, let us thank our lucky stars

for great bodycare, which can perform an almost instant makeover.

Now, you probably have your favourite body products. (I certainly do;

I’ve lost count of how many tubs of Weleda Skin Food Body Butter

I’ve got through, over the years.) But over recent months, I’ve discovered

some delectable bodycare launches that I thought I’d share with you here,

to take you from dry and dusty to gleaming and velvety in no time at all.

My one tip? Do exfoliate gently before using any of these

– with a mitt or your fave scrub – to reveal the fresh new

body cells that will simply drink up these treats…

istockphoto.com/PeopleImages

BYOMA is a simply-packaged, stylish (and reasonably-priced) British

brand that has taken the skincare world somewhat by storm, reminding

us of the importance of the skin’s barrier function to keep moisture in

and everything else out. Definitely worth checking out are their new

body-nurturing products, of which I’m especially enjoying the BYOMA

Brightening Body Lotion, a silky-textured formula that makes skin instantly

appear brighter and more radiant via ingredients that include niacinamide

and ceramides. This one assuredly doesn’t irritate my notoriously touchy skin,

but you might like to know that there’s also a BYOMA Sensitive Skin Body

Lotion, as well as a Hydrating Body Lotion option (all just £12.99 for 400ml).

Fenty Skin Butta Drop Hydrating Body Milk, £28 for 185ml. Couldn’t sing you

a single Rihanna tune – but I can sing the praises of her beauty range. In a finger-click,

this sinks right in swiftly delivering ingredients like coconut, watermelon and rice bran

oils, along with shea, cocoa and mango seed butters, glycerine and a hit of acerola fruit

extract, with a scent that’s lightly juicy-fruity (and really lovely). A fast fix for flakiness.

Space NK Paros Tides, £5-22, is a properly summery collection for

hands and bodies which just drifted ashore at the beauty retailer.

Everything from Body Scrub to Body Oil via Hand Cream is

infused with a gorgeous new fragrance, designed to capture ‘the

essence of the Aegean coast’ with a breezy fusion of aquatic

notes, fig and elderflower, warmed by amber. You really can pick

and mix from the range, as many of the products are available

in travel/discovery sizes; that hand cream, for instance, is just

a fiver for 30ml, which is an absolute steal. Your holiday may

be a way off, but it’ll feel closer, anointing yourself with this.

The Imperial Leather Ultimate Moisture range was just unveiled from a

brand which makes many a woman come over all nostalgic (remember those

TV ads for the iconic soap?) Fast forward to 2025, and they have, as it were,

‘raised the bar’: you can now bathe your senses in sophisticated body cleansing

products in a choice of two surprisingly appealing scents, created by leading

perfumers: Cherry Blossom & Almond Oil and (my favourite) Vanilla & White

Orchid. Of the four products, which are available in both aromas, I like the gentle

Ultimate Moisture Foaming Body Scrub, £6.99 for 250ml, and the Ultimate Moisture

Foamburst, £4.50 for 200ml, both of which leave skin feeling nourished, not tight.

Jo Malone London Care Collection is a departure for the much-loved fragrance

brand, with a more ‘aromatherapeutic’ approach that is also inspired by Roman,

Greek and Ottoman bathing rituals. There are seven treats – and I do mean

treats – to indulge in, of which my faves are the Restore Body Oil, £64 for

150ml, aromatic with neroli, jasmine and rosehip essential oils, in a base of

evening primrose and sweet almond; skin instantly glistens and smells sublime.

This is actually a late-lamented body oil from a skincare brand called Rodin,

which was bought by Jo Malone London’s parent Estée Lauder Companies, and

I couldn’t be happier that it’s now reincarnated. I wholeheartedly recommend

that you take yourself to a Jo Malone London counter for a sniffing session of

these – also prepare to swoon over the refreshing, citrusy Revitalise Body Gel-

Cream, £35 for 200ml, and rosy-posy Enrich Body Balm, £64 for 200ml.

This Works Deep Sleep Beauty Oil, £45 for 150ml, is now the body indulgence

I reach for when sleep happens to be proving elusive. The essential oil combo of

lavender, vetiver and patchouli is the equivalent of knockout drops, for me, while

the blend of sweet almond, pomegranate and argan oil, enriched by bakuchiol (a

natural alternative to vitamin A) works overnight to restore elasticity. Heaven.

Margaret Dabbs Concealing & Firming Leg Serum, £52 for 200ml, can be your

go-to when pastry legs need an instant makeover. Pigments have been chosen to offer

an ‘airbrushed’ effect, which is buildable if you’d rather look more South of France

than South of England, tan-wise. Meanwhile, it’s not new, but the product I habitually

recommend as a gradual self-tanner (to the delight of many a grateful friend who’s been

turned onto this) is Gatineau Golden Glow Gradual Tan Cream, £55 for 400ml – it

comes in an absolutely WHACKING bottle, for good reason, because you’re going to want

to use it again and again and again. The results – which develop in three to four hours –

are super natural-looking, there’s absolutely no biscuit scent, and the cream-gel formula

instantly hydrates so that limbs look smooth and feel soft from the moment of application.

There is just one more step to remember, as you unpeel those layers and put your

gleaming limbs on show – which is to protect them against UV damage, including

sunburn. Another recent innovation, KOPARI Golden Sunglaze Sheer Body

Mist Sunscreen SPF30, £36 for 150ml, spritzes on protection that is infused with

gilded particles (alongside vitamin C and E), to leave skin truly gleaming.

You are now officially ready for the season of shorts, swimwear

and sleeveless shirts. And I say: Bring. It. On.

“Playing golf was no fun with

agonising sciatica… but I’m finally

pain-free after IDD Therapy”

After his IDD Therapy

programme, Bill is enjoying

golf with his friends again...

three times a week!

Keen golfer Bill Langan struggled with

back pain and sciatica for six years, all

the while refusing to give up his beloved

sport. But eventually the pain and

immobility began to affect his enjoyment

of the game and he worried that soon he

might not be able to play at all.

Bill explains: “My back pain and sciatica

developed over a period of six months back

in 2012. It started with some niggles in my

back, but after a few weeks I was waking up

in the night in agony with shooting pains

in my leg.”

Over the next few months Bill’s pain

worsened and the episodes became more

frequent. “I’ve always been a keen golfer

and as time went on, I began to feel worse

every time I ventured out for a game. The

mornings were the toughest; I could hardly

move when I woke up and I needed to take

painkillers regularly to manage the pain.”

After expressing concerns to his GP, Bill

was given an MRI scan which showed a

bulging disc in his lower back which was

compressing his sciatic nerve.

“I was half expecting my GP to suggest

surgery but instead I was told there was

nothing they could do for me. I felt deflated

and I didn’t really know what to do next.”

Bill struggled on until early last year when

he saw a local magazine article featuring

IDD Therapy, a targeted disc treatment for

persistent back pain, neck pain and sciatica.

The non-invasive treatment uses gentle

pulling forces to draw apart spinal segments

where discs are bulging or damaged,

removing pressure and irritation from

trapped nerves.

Bill saw that IDD Therapy was being

offered at Wealden Osteopaths and Spine

Centre in Flimwell. The expert team

uses the programme to help patients who

find themselves on a merry-go-round of

painkillers, physiotherapy and GP visits.

“When I read the magazine story, the

person featured in it had gone through a

similar ordeal to me and they were now

pain-free after IDD Therapy. I suddenly

felt hopeful and quickly arranged a spinal

assessment with Clinical Director, James

Pickering. I was very impressed with him;

he reassured me that the treatment would

target the root of my problem, not just my

symptoms.”

IDD Therapy is changing the lives of back pain,

neck pain and sciatica sufferers

Bill was determined to recover his health

and focused on attending regular sessions:“I

knew I needed to be committed to the

programme and it was totally worthwhile:

the sessions were actually relaxing and

even before the course finished, my back

felt the best it had done in years and my

sciatic pain had disappeared completely:

amazing! Nearly two years later, I have

occasional osteopathic treatments to stay on

top of things, but I’m still sciatica-free, I’m

enjoying life… and playing golf three times

a week!”

“After my IDD Therapy

programme, my sciatic pain

disappeared completely:

amazing!”

James Pickering is delighted with Bill’s

progress:.“Bill is a great example of someone

who’s maintained a good level of spinal

health since his treatment with us, and

IDD Therapy was just the start of that;

the springboard, if you like. IDD got him

moving again, by taking pressure off the

spinal joints and nerves, and once he was

moving, his body continued the good

work.”

Don’t let back pain, neck pain or

sciatica put your life on hold.

Health

Tone it up!

Sarah Maxwell explains how to perfect your triceps

istockphoto.com/ :Drazen Zigic

Did you know that your

triceps (triceps brachii)

are the largest muscle in

your arm? The triceps comprise of

three powerful heads and are the key

to unlocking strength, definition

and injury prevention. They are

instrumental in everyday activities,

such as picking up from the floor or

reaching overhead, holding a pencil

and maintaining good posture.

So whether you’re an athlete,

fitness enthusiast, or simply want to

tone up, it’s time to give the unsung

heroes of upper body magnificence

the attention they deserve.

Before starting this workout,

thoroughly warm up, check your

posture, engage your core and slow

down to enable you to go through

the whole range of movement

steadily; fully extend your arms,

but don’t lock/snap your joints

into a straight position (this

could result in joint damage).

Let’s get started!

1. Kickbacks

Holding a dumbbell in each hand,

extend your arms straight back,

squeezing the triceps and keeping

elbows close to your body. Slowly

bend your arms back to the starting

position and repeat 10-15 times.

2. Extensions

Holding a dumbbell, extend your

arm overhead, lower the weight

behind your head, and lift back

up. Repeat 10-15 times (for an

extra core kick, stand on one leg).

3. Tricep Dips

Place your hands on a sturdy

bench or chair with your legs

extended in front of you. Lower

your body by bending your

elbows until your upper arms are

parallel with the floor, then push

back up. Repeat 10-15 times.

4. Lying Extensions

(also called Skull Crushers!)

Lying on a bench or the floor,

keeping your arms straight and

bending from your elbows, lower

the weights towards your forehead

and extend back up to the starting

position. Repeat 10-15 times.

AND FINALLY (not for

the faint-hearted)

Diamond Press Ups

1.) Get into a high plank

position with your hands

under your shoulders.

2.) Bring each hand directly

under your chest with thumbs

and forefingers touching to

create a diamond shape.

3.) Hold this plank position

(keeping your body straight) and

bend your arms (you are aiming

to get as low as possible). Return

to your starting position.

This exercise can be brutal, so

please be careful. If attempting

for the first time, try a few

repetitions with your

knees on the floor (as in

a half press-up position,

and go from there).

Tricep Extras

1.) Gradually increase the weight,

reps, or sets, over time to continue

challenging your triceps.

2.) Consider pairing your tricep

concentration with chest or shoulder

workouts to save time and increase

your upper body strength.

3.) For optimum tone and repair,

allow at least 48 hours of

rest between workouts.

And finally, bring

on the summer and

enjoy showing off

the results of your

hard work – you

deserve it.

Nourish to Flourish

Nutrition & Lifestyle Coach Charlotte Lau

explores the benefits of incorporating another

healthy ingredient into our diets. This month

she’s focusing in on getting enough fibre

World Digestion Day falls at the end of the

month and it is the perfect opportunity

to take a look at foods that support our

digestive health. Focusing on simple and consistent

dietary changes can positively impact our digestive

systems, whilst ensuring that we get enough fibre (30g

a day is recommended) helps to slow down digestion,

regulates blood sugar levels, keeps us feeling fuller

for longer, supports our immune system, reduces

cholesterol and is essential for good gut health.

In order to optimise the absorption of nutrients and

maintain a healthy gut we can tweak our diets to help

our digestive system work more efficiently. A diet low in

fibre and essential fats and high in sugars, saturated fats,

alcohol and processed foods can lead to an imbalance

of bacteria as well as impairing bowel movement.

Instead, prioritising plant-based foods that are high in

fibre aids the body in removing waste as well as feeding

our gut microbiome. Focus on variety as this delivers

a large spectrum of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants,

but also helps our gut bacteria to thrive. Incorporate

wholegrains, vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds

into your daily meals. Soups, stews, salads, smoothies and

stir fries are all great ways of increasing fibre in your diet.

Veg Out

Jo Arnell unearths all you need to know about planting veg this May

May is a fantastic month for growing vegetables.

The frosts should have passed (but do watch the

weather forecast just in case!), the soil is warm, the

days are longer and conditions are ideal for direct sowing – no

greenhouse or windowsills needed. Whatever the size of your

plot – a giant veg patch, a small raised bed or just a few pots,

there are some easy vegetables to plant now. Just think, in a few

weeks you could be harvesting your own home grown food.

Before you rush out there though, have a think – about

what you like to eat, how easy it is to grow and then

adjust what and how much to grow. Think about the

size of your growing space, and pace yourself. It’s easy

to get carried away, sow masses and then be on holiday

when your glut of produce needs to be harvested.

Check your soil

Vegetables tend to be quite hungry for nutrients and will need

to be grown in good, rich soil. They grow fast – many are

annual and we expect a lot from them in a short amount of

time. Add some organic matter – manure or garden compost

– to boost the beds before you start growing. The exception

are carrots and parsnips, which do best in free-draining

conditions that have not been recently manured. The greediest

crops are the leafy ones – brassicas like cabbage and kale.

Watering

Water is an issue, especially as the soil warms and begins to

dry out in the summer months. I have very free-draining

dry soil and try to save my water for the plants that need it

most. Clay soil, although hard to dig and slow to warm in the

spring, will hold on to nutrients and moisture for longer.

Water to establish, but then focus any extra watering on

crops that are swelling fruits (sweetcorn, pumpkins, squash and

courgettes) and those that make pods (peas and beans). It is

better to water deeply and less often, than to sprinkle a little

on the surface every day, as this doesn’t get down to the roots.

Hot weather

Some like it hot – tomatoes, aubergines and peppers will thrive

in the heat of the summer, but there are cooler customers that

are best sown earlier in the spring, and again in late summer

when the temperatures are not as fierce. The cool weather

crops – spinach, pak choi, rocket and beetroot – will show their

displeasure and bolt (rush into flower and set seed) to escape

from the conditions and put their faith in the next generation.

Grow lettuces in light shade during the hottest

months and they should crop for longer before

running to seed and tasting bitter.

109

priceless-magazines.com

Some Good Crops to Sow Now

Cut and Come Again Salads – this is the

perfect time to sow cut-and-come-again salad crops. These

varieties let you harvest leaves repeatedly over weeks. You can

buy mixes of leaves, or to make your own, try a mix of ‘Salad

Bowl’ lettuce, ‘Lollo Rosso’, Mizuna, Rocket, Mustard Greens

and Red Oakleaf. Sow seeds thinly in rows or broadcast in a

bed. Cover lightly, keep moist, and they’ll germinate quickly

in warm soil. Once leaves reach about 10cm tall, cut

them with scissors, leaving the base and inner leaves

intact. The plant will regrow from the centre. Sow

every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply. Harvest in the

cooler part of the day for the best texture and flavour.

Courgettes – even if you really love courgettes you’ll

only need one plant to keep you (and the rest of the

neighbourhood) supplied for the summer. Sow three seeds just

to make sure that at least one will germinate and then throw at

least one away (or donate to someone unsuspecting). The seeds

of pumpkins, squash and courgettes are large and flat. Sow them

on edge (thin side first) – just push them down into the soil and

keep them warm and moist. There are quite a few varieties to

try – there’s even a climbing type called Tromboncino, which

can be grown up an obelisk. The most reliable is probably one

called ‘Defender’, which will happily pump out courgettes for

weeks on end. Make sure you check them every few days, as they

have a habit of turning into monsters when you back is turned.

Sweetcorn – once you have tasted your own home grown

super-sweet sweetcorn (picked as the cooking water comes to

the boil), you may never be able to eat ‘fresh’ supermarket

corn cobs again. There are some good varieties around,

usually with the word ‘sweet’ in their name. The reason you

should cook and eat sweetcorn as soon as you have picked it

is because the sugars turn to starch very quickly and it loses its

wonderful sweet flavour and starts to taste woody (the same

thing happens with peas). Sow or plant out sweetcorn in a

grid formation, not in a long row, as they are wind pollinated

and stand more chance of successful pollination grouped

together in a square. They’re a hungry crop and need a rich,

well composted soil. The corn is ready to pick when the tassels

have turned brown. You can also do the fingernail test – peel

back a little of the husk on the cob and push your nail into

a kernel. If the fluid inside is milky, it’s ready to pick.

French Beans – I sow them twice, because I use lots

of these, but you can get to the end of the season with one

lot (just ask yourself; how much do I like beans?). I often

sow dwarf beans as the second crop as they tend to be a little

quicker than climbing varieties. The last sowing should be no

later than July (June for runners) to ensure the beans ripen

before the first autumn frosts. Good climbing varieties to try:

Cobra, Blue lake. Dwarf varieties: Purple Teepee, Delinel.

Pumpkins and Squash – some will turn into

enormous sprawling plants that will swamp your entire veg patch

in an alarming triffid-like way, so be careful where you plant

them and make sure they have enough space to grow. The smaller

squashes can be grown up sturdy obelisks or arches, but the larger

ones just need space to ramble along the ground, as their fruits

can be too heavy for the stem. You may see pumpkins and squash

being grown on large compost heaps, which suits them very

well, as they need rich deep soil – and the warmth of the heap

will also help with growth and ripening. Butternut and Winter

squash are easy to grow and will keep for weeks after harvesting

– make sure you allow the skin to ‘cure’, or harden in the sun to

prolong their storage life. The smaller pumpkins are the tastiest,

but it’s hard not to try and grow a huge Halloween monster…

Germination rates should be good at this time of the year,

growth will be speedy – and the same goes for weeds. Pests

will be proliferating too, so check your burgeoning crops

regularly and try to deter them (organically and with biological

controls to protect the ecosystem). With any luck, some

gentle rains, sunshine and a little TLC, you will be harvesting

your own home grown produce in a matter of weeks.

Education

Looking Forward

A Head for 25 years, Mike Piercy is now an educational consultant and school governor.

Here, in his analysis of ambition, he explains how to manage parental expectations

A

wealthy industrialist was walking along the beach when he encountered a fisherman

hauling in his catch. He asked the fisherman how long he’d been out.

‘Oh, not long,’ was the reply.

‘Why don’t you go out for longer and catch more?’ the industrialist continued.

The fisherman explained that his catch was sufficient for his needs. After fishing he would take any surplus

fish to sell at the market, return home, play with his children, have lunch and a siesta. In the evening he would

go into the village to see his friends, have a drink, play the guitar and maybe sing some songs.

The industrialist could not conceal his surprise. ‘Look, I run a successful business – I have an MBA. Why

don’t you fish for longer? Catch and sell more fish. You could buy a second boat, then a third, fourth,

fifth. You could maybe negotiate with the processing plant for a better price – or even buy it!’

The fisherman, still tidying his boat, asked how long that might take.

‘Oh, maybe twenty or twenty-five years. You could make millions!’

‘And what would I do then?’ asked the fisherman, the wealthy industrialist surprised at his nonchalance.

‘Well, then you could retire. You could live by the coast, have time to play with your

grandchildren, have a siesta, go to the bar in the evening with your friends…’

An apocryphal, cautionary tale. I delight in the irony. In last month’s issue I referred to ‘realistic ambition.’ By contrast, however,

I do value the words of Robert Browning: ‘Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp or what’s heaven for?’ There has to be a

balance between aiming high while also having realistic expectations of what is achievable. The context, of course, was aiming for

successful entry to the favoured secondary school: choosing a school which will challenge while also nurturing and supporting.

If there is a tension between these two approaches it can only be eased by looking at the individual. Ambition has

to be measured with the perspective of character and aptitude. For someone to aspire to, say, medicine, the brain

must have scientific wiring. The individual should, in addition, have considerable stamina and resilience. While

at home and at school we can develop resilience, I believe there is a biological prerequisite of hard wiring.

I recall a school assembly when I asked the pupils of their ambitions. One said he wished to be Chief Executive of

a multi-national company (which just so happened to be the organisation where his father held a senior position).

The next question, ‘And how do you think you might achieve that ambition?’ was not answered quite so confidently.

Naturally, he understood it would require hard work through GCSE, A Level (or IB) and university. We then explored

how he might overcome the inevitable disappointments along the way.

In a meeting with a parent some years ago, trying to find the right school for

her son, her ambition was very apparent. ‘My husband went to Cambridge.

I went to Oxford. Why is he not at the top of the class?’ It doesn’t

quite work like that I tried to explain and, further, her son was

a quiet, sensitive ten-year-old, the sort of child who did not

need the imposed pressure of ambition and expectation.

There was potential, for sure, but he needed to find his

own level with the balance of challenge and safety

nets. Another parent expressed disappointment

her son was taking up an apprenticeship rather

than choosing university. I fully endorsed his

choice: learning ‘on the job’ with training

and accumulating experience does not

preclude ambition. Each to their own, I say.

Jane Howard gets to the

bottom of an all-male

embryo conundrum

Ne’er cast a clout till May is out. An old

English proverb which I casually threw into

the conversation while riding along some

especially beautiful country lanes with my friend Jilly.

She was however surprised to learn that the saying does

not refer to the month of May but to May the other

name for clouds of white hawthorn

blossom that is everywhere at this time

of year. And if you’re interested in all

that oldie Englande stuffe, then you

might also want to know that way back

then clout had many meanings, most

commonly used when giving someone

a great thump on their head, but also

a piece of cloth or clothing. Hence

'Ne’er cast a clout till May is out' does

in fact mean don’t take off your winter

woollies till the hawthorn is out!

This year however we have all had to

make an exception. The last few weeks

of April have been glorious, T-shirt

weather, so I definitely cast my clout

too early and enjoyed every minute

of it. And I haven’t minded one bit

getting up in the middle of the night

when I’ve been on the late lambing

and calving shift, to enjoy the dawn chorus, watch the

sun come up and, one morning, Mother Nature even

threw in a 4am eclipse of the moon. All very special.

But we’ve finished lambing now and only have a few

more calves to go. But here’s a strange thing, we’ve

had fourteen so far, out of sixteen, and all but one

have been bull calves. What on earth is going on?

As we all know, at conception there’s a fifty per cent

chance of it being a male embryo and a fifty per cent

chance of it being a female. So you can expect about

half and half, and while some years it’s a few more

of one than the other, over the years it does indeed

balance out. But thirteen out of fourteen does seem a

bit extreme and must, I feel, warrant

further investigation as to the reasons.

And I found it (what did we do before

the Internet!) According to the Trevis-

Willard Hypothesis, at conception there

will indeed always be an equal number,

but something can then happen to make

the male embryos more successful than

the female ones. The things that influence

this are whether she had a male calf the

last time around, though no one seems

quite sure why that might be, what her

BC score was at mating (BC is a body

condition score that goes from 1, very

thin to 5 very fat) and the plumper the

cow the more likely she is to carry a bull.

And then there’s the weather. If the

sun shines, the rain falls softly and the

grass is lush and plentiful then more bulls

will be born nine months later – but

this is probably because the cows will then be fatter and

BC will have an impact. As you can imagine, Messrs

Trevis and Willard studied a herd of 500 dairy cows

over several years to create their hypothesis, so sixteen

cows at Coopers Farm for one year is hardly statistically

sound but whatever, let’s hope the spring grass is lush

keeping them plump for when the bull goes back later

this month and next year may be a pinker one than

this. And it would be nice if the last two were heifers.
