Arts

A Personal Journey

TRULETTE CLAYES AND THE FUTURE OF CYGNET THEATRE

Executive Director Bill Schmidt, Trulette

Clayes, Jeff Partrick and Artisitic

Director Sean Murray at The Joan

It was an ordinary day that turned

extraordinary for Trulette Clayes. While

driving to an appointment, she found herself

slowing down by a construction site - and

there it was: the budding Cygnet Theatre in

Arts District Liberty Station. That unexpected

moment would soon blossom into a deeply

personal connection with a place that promised to be

much more than a building - it was soon to be a haven

for creativity and community.

Trulette’s theatrical involvement is both familial and

lifelong. Her late uncle, a man who trained at the

local Naval Training Center and cherished theatre,

left an indelible mark on her. A childhood love of

theatre resonated with her later discovery of Cygnet

Theatre. A close friend from the theatre world, Steve

Romande, filled her in on the magic behind the scenes

and urged her to take a closer look. The moment

when the new space was christened “The Joan” in

honor of Joan Jacobs was something Trulette found

profoundly moving. “It was so special to witness that

announcement,” she shares.

In September of this year, the curtain rises on

Cygnet Theatre’s brand new home at The Joan and

Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center at Arts District

Liberty Station. Nicknamed “The Joan” for the late

local philanthropist Joan Jacobs, the state-of-the-art

complex will include a 280+-seat proscenium theater,

12 MAY 2025 | GBSAN.COM

as well as a 150-seat flexible studio space, acoustic

elements, ADA accessible seating, a rehearsal space,

open air lobby, two elegant bars, three landscaped

patios, ample restrooms, and parking. The worldclass

venue is

a result of a

unique nonprofit

partnership

between Cygnet

Theatre and NTC

Foundation, who

joined forces in

2017 to renovate

and restore

historic Naval

building 178 at

Liberty Station.

The project

broke ground in

early 2024 and

has resulted in

a stellar cultural

center ready

to serve more

patrons than ever

before.

Trulette’s years

as Controller at

the Museum of

Contemporary Art San Diego

- over two decades of working

amidst the vibrancy of artistic

expression - cemented her belief

that the arts are the heartbeat

of a community. Trulette

recognized art’s role in uniting

people, offering a space for

shared experiences. “An evening

at the theatre lets you escape

and connect with others,” she

shared with GB Magazine. It is a

reminder that art is not just seen or heard - it is felt.

With that spirit in mind, Trulette made a generous

endowment to Cygnet Theatre. This gift is a strategic

investment in the theatre’s future, guaranteeing its

capacity to provide live performances and community

experiences for generations. “A financial gift like this

makes a big difference in the long-term health of a

not-for-profit

organization,”

she adds.

Looking ahead,

Trulette envisions

Cygnet Theatre as a

warm gathering place

- a stage not just for

actors but for the

entire community

Looking

ahead,

Trulette

envisions

Cygnet

Theatre

as a warm

gathering

place - a stage

not just for

actors but

for the entire

community.

Whether it

is sharing

a laugh,

shedding

a tear, or

sparking a

conversation

that lasts

long after the

final curtain call, she wants

every visitor to leave with

a sense of belonging and

inspiration.

Trulette Clayes

and Jeff Partrick

For Trulette, supporting

the arts is simple advice for

everyone: seek out what

moves you, and share that

passion - be it through a

financial gift, a few hours

of volunteering, or simply

spreading the word. With

Trulette’s legacy lighting the way, the future of Cygnet

Theatre is sure to be filled with vibrant creativity and

endless inspiration.

The Salvation Army’s

National Donut Day

A TRADITION BORN ON THE BATTLEFIELD

Salvation Army in 1917

For over a century,

The Salvation Army

has been providing

more than just

warm meals - it has

been serving up

one of America’s

Serving meals to a soldier

for a taste of home

favorite treats: the donut.

National Donut Day, held annually on the first Friday

in June, is more than just a celebration of this beloved

pastry. It is a tribute to the brave Salvation Army “Donut

Lassies” of World War I paired with a fun family-friendly

event supporting vital programs for veterans in need.

National Donut Day traces

back to 1917, when Evangeline

Booth, daughter of Salvation

Army founder William

Booth, sent volunteers to the

frontlines of World War I in

France. These women, known

as “Donut Lassies,” provided

soldiers with a taste of home - hot coffee, warm meals,

and fresh, handmade donuts. Their efforts lifted spirits

and introduced American troops to a pastry that was

virtually unknown in the U.S. at the time.

18 MAY 2025 | GBSAN.COM

When soldiers returned home, they

longed for the donuts they had enjoyed

overseas, sparking America’s love affair

with the treat. In 1938, The Salvation

Army established National Donut Day

as both a fundraiser and a way to honor

the legacy of the Donut Lassies. Since

then, The Salvation Army has continued

to celebrate this historic day each year

while using it as an opportunity to

support veterans and those in need.

Salvation Army “Donut

Lassies” of World War I

is FREE for everyone. A special tribute will

honor military veterans for their service.

Salvation Army’s

National Donut Day

A highlight of the event is an exciting

competition among participating donut

shops, each presenting their unique

interpretation of an 80th anniversary

Midway-themed donut, commemorating

80 years since the Naval aircraft carrier was

built. Local celebrity judges will select the

Best in Show among these themed creations.

Attendees can enjoy a variety of delicious

donuts while exploring the rich history of

The Midway.

“Keeping the memory of the

Donut Lassies alive is more

than just honoring history

– it is about inspiring

future generations to serve

with the same heart and

dedication,” said Major

Amy Reardon, Divisional

Secretary for The Salvation

Army San Diego shared

with GB Magazine.

The Salvation Army,

in partnership with

BakeMark, is proud to announce the 2nd annual

Donut Festival aboard the historic USS Midway

Museum, celebrating National Donut Day. BakeMark

sponsors National Donut Day, showcasing some of the

finest donut shops in San Diego County.

Taking place on Friday, June 6, 2025, from 12:00 PM to

2:00 PM, with ship access starting at 11 AM, the festival

“Our goal is to bring the

community together in

celebration of National

Donut Day while raising

awareness about military

veterans struggling in

San Diego County,”

added Major Reardon.

“Through the generosity of

BakeMark, The Midway,

and community support, we

aim to make a meaningful

impact.”

The festival promises a fun-filled day with a live band,

BUILDING ON

EXCELLENCE

Foundation for

Developmental Disabilities

The Association of Fundraising Professionals San Diego honored FDD

as the Outstanding Organization for Diversity and Inclusion at National

Philanthropy Day. Sitara Sethi, FDD CEO, and Jan Adams, FDD Board Chair.

FDD provides critical emergency

assistance for families in our community

For 39 years, the Foundation for

Developmental Disabilities (FDD) has

broken barriers and created opportunities

for individuals with intellectual and

developmental disabilities (I/DDs) in San

Diego and Imperial Counties. Through

funding, advocacy, and emergency

assistance, FDD has helped thousands of individuals with

I/DDs and their families access essential resources. As

FDD approaches its 40th anniversary in 2026, it remains

committed to fostering a more inclusive community.

In 2024, the Association of Fundraising Professionals San

Diego honored FDD as the Outstanding Organization for

Diversity and Inclusion at National Philanthropy Day.

This recognition reflects FDD’s long-standing

efforts to ensure individuals with I/DDs access

to education, job training, housing, and essential

services. By partnering with diverse organizations,

investing in innovative programs, and addressing

systemic barriers, FDD continues to champion

meaningful change.

A well-trained workforce ensures quality care and

services for individuals with I/DDs. Recognizing

this, FDD invests in education and career

pathways for students pursuing I/DD-related

careers. In the past seven years, the Raymond M.

Peterson Scholarship Program has awarded over

$228,000 to eighty-four post-secondary students

in advocacy, therapy, special education, and

service provision. These students represent the

future workforce supporting and empowering the

I/DD community.

fully immersive college

experience, vocational

skills, and independent

living training.

Initiatives like this

ensure that individuals CSUSM Aspiring

with I/DDs receive

training, mentorship,

and career pathway support for long-term success.

Since 1986, FDD has allocated over $2 million in

emergency assistance, including $236,000 in the past

year alone, helping families maintain stable housing

and essential services. The Emergency Help Fund is a

vital safety net for San Diego and Imperial Counties’

families of children with I/DDs, preventing eviction,

Education

Introducing the ANDers Fund

at National University

SUPPORTING STUDENTS WHO BALANCE IT ALL

National University Graduates

National University is home to

students who are doing more than

pursuing degrees - they are balancing

careers, raising families, serving

in the military, caregiving, and so

much more. These are the ANDers -

nontraditional, working, and military

students whose educational journeys are not defined

by a straight line, but by resilience, determination, and

the many roles they juggle in life.

To support this growing “new norm” population,

the National University Foundation established the

first-of-its-kind ANDers Fund - a groundbreaking

initiative dedicated to removing financial barriers for

students leading dynamic lives that do not always align

with traditional models of higher education. Through

emergency assistance, scholarships, and wraparound

support, the Fund helps nontraditional students

stay on track, complete their education, and prepare

for meaningful careers. Now, donors can contribute

directly to a fund built specifically for - and around -

the ANDers it was created to serve.

“ANDers show us every day what hard work

and resilience look like. They face challenges

that extend far beyond the classroom - yet they

continue to rise, thrive, and move forward.

Through the ANDers Fund, our donors honor

that perseverance, recognize these students

as a vital part of higher

education, and ensure

that more of these striving

students succeed.”

— Dr. Mark D. Milliron,

This initiative builds on

that night are already

The Gala’s encore

is set for September

student stories that embody the perseverance and

purpose of the ANDers spirit. It will also include the

presentation of the 2025 NU Humanitarian of the Year

Awards, honoring individuals whose life’s work reflects

the ANDers ethos—demonstrating exceptional service to

others and a deep commitment to uplifting communities.

“From scholarships and success coaching to

innovative pilot programs that support academic,

financial, emotional, and family well-being,

the Foundation’s work is rooted in National

Wheelhouse Credit Union

AWARDING MEMORIAL GRANT TO SPORTS4KIDS

Wheelhouse Credit Union

presents a grant to Sports4Kids

In a show of community partnership and youthled

impact, Wheelhouse Credit Union has

awarded its second annual D. Cruz Gonzalez

Memorial Grant to Sports4Kids, a nonprofit

dedicated to supporting local youth experiencing

homelessness. The grant will directly fund

essential care packages for unhoused students at

Perkins Elementary School in Barrio Logan.

The grant was presented during Sports4Kids’ Bags of

Hope giveback event, where Wheelhouse employees,

led by Wheelhouse Credit Union President and CEO

Lisa Paul-Hill, joined to help assemble and distribute

care packages to students in need. The event was

not only a meaningful moment of connection and

support, but a testament to the shared mission of both

organizations: uplifting underserved communities

through compassion and action.

Wheelhouse Credit Union established the D. Cruz

Gonzalez Memorial Grant in 2023 in honor of the late

Daniel “Cruz” Gonzalez, a former Board Chair known

for his lifelong dedication to volunteerism. The grant

is awarded annually to a local organization or initiative

that makes a significant positive impact on San

Diegans - values Cruz embodied throughout his life.

“We are proud to continue Cruz’s legacy by making

a true difference in the lives of individuals in our

underserved San Diego communities through

volunteerism and outreach,” shared Wheelhouse

President and CEO Lisa Paul-Hill. “Sports4Kids and

its founder Arden Pala are an inspiration to all of us,

and reflect the shared values of Cruz and Wheelhouse

as we work to support those in our beautiful city who

need it most. We congratulate Arden and look forward

to continuing to support all his good work”

Youth

One of the ways

local nonprofit

Promises2Kids

fulfills its mission of

creating a brighter

future for foster

children is through

its critical Camp

Connect program.

Camp Connect

reunites brothers

and sisters who

are separated and

living apart in foster

care, and though

the traditional

overnight summer

camp each year

anchors the

calendar, monthly

visits, and group

outings give siblings

the opportunity to see one another and maintain their

bond throughout the year.

Sun, salt air, and deep blue waters awaited Camp

Connect as they set sail on a recent whale-watching

cruise. “Oohs” and “aahs” abounded as several whales

were spotted shyly peeking out through the waves, joined

by the dolphins surfing in the wake.

Among them were sisters Kalani (12) and Hailey (7).

When they entered care due to severe abuse and neglect,

they were separated and ended up living in different

homes. However, they were soon enrolled in Camp

Connect so they could reunite at events like this.

They were in their own little world as they set out from

the dock. Each youth was given an ocean-themed puzzle

Camp

Connect

Kalani and Hailey with other

children at Camp Connect

book at the

start of the trip.

Kalani put hers

aside to work on

Hailey’s so they

could fill out the

crosswords as a

team while the

ship made its

way to sea.

They moved to

the top of the

boat where the

crew set out bait

for campers to

entice birds and

sea life. Hailey

plunged her

hand into the

bucket, unafraid

of getting her

hands on small

wiggly fish.

Kalani hesitated,

but after seeing

the smile on

Hailey’s face,

rolled up her

sleeves and dipped in as well. They joined in tossing the

bait to the ever-growing flock of birds, gleefully ducking

their swoops and watching them dive into the wake.

As Promises2Kids often finds at these big events, every

moment is truly cherished.

Camp Connect was created for moments like these,

where siblings can continue to have fun and just be

kids together. Thanks to the generous support of

the community, siblings like Kalani and Hailey will

continue to spend cherished time with each other

month after month.

About San Diego

The Tin Man Of North Park

BY KEN KRAMER

Standing near

the corner

of Howard

Avenue and

Idaho Street,

Alex Bevil

looked up

at the looming century-old

neighborhood landmark

and described what he was

seeing with the love of an

historian and the precision

of a structural engineer.

When built in 1924, it

was, he said, “the tallest

ellipsoidal bottom elevated

steel plate water tank in the

world.”

PHOTO CREDIT: NORTH PARK HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Officially known as

the University Heights

Elevated Water Tank, the

name dates to when the

borders of that community

extended into what is

today parts of North

Park. While holding 1.2

million gallons of water

high up in the air, the tank

allowed gravity to create

the water pressure needed

for thousands of faucets

from East San Diego to

Hillcrest, University Heights, Mission Hills, and

Uptown. Its unique design and massive dimensions

provided a reliable water source through San Diego’s

growing years.

A while back, Alex, a retired California State Parks

Historian, was asked to write a proposal that the tower

and the seven-acre water infrastructure area around it

The North Park Water Tank

under construction in 1923

be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Thus began his deep research dive into its hydraulics,

but along the way he discovered something else.

A lot of people in North Park see the tower as a symbol

of their community. Over the years, residents dressed

up like the tower to march in in the Toyland Parade.

They sported tattoos. “One person,” he said, “their leg

features the water tower.” Visible for miles, it became

an easy landmark for locals, by which directions were

56 MAY 2025 | GBSAN.COM

The North Park

Water Tower

given and distances

measured. Travelers

returning to San Diego

by air could spot it

immediately. It was like

a welcome home.

But today the tank is

empty and has been

since the 1990s. It

became obsolete, and

nobody wanted to

imagine more than

A marcher dressed as the

Water Tower in The North

Park Toyland Parade

a million gallons of water sloshing around in an

earthquake. So why not tear it down? “Because

the locals would have been up in arms,” Alex says.

“They did an informal survey asking people ‘what

does the tower mean to you?’” The survey revealed

a surprising level of affection. “One person said,

‘basically it gives me a kind of steam punk vibe and

reminds me of the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz.’”

Alex adopted that term and uses it now to describe

the tower. Over his months of study and research he

has grown fond of the Tin Man, as well as the nearby

community center and a baseball field where a young

Ted Williams learned the art of hitting.

Historian Alex Bevil did extensive

research on the North Park Water Tower

In 2013, his work paid off. The

big tank on Howard Avenue and

the area around it were added to

the National Register. Two years

later it was designated a local

Civil Engineering Landmark,

and an ongoing symbol of

North Park. Next time you are

in the neighborhood, look up.

You can’t miss it.

Annie

Fitzgerald

Leading with Heart

and Hospitality at

The Westgate Hotel

60 MAY 2025 | GBSAN.COM

Annie Fitzgerald has

always been more than

just a general manager

at the Westgate Hotel -

she is the kind of leader

who makes every day

feel personal. Instead of

staying tucked away in an office, she is

often out on the floor, chatting with staff

and making sure every guest feels right

at home.

From the start, Annie made it clear that

everyone matters. No matter if someone

has just joined the team or has been

around for years, she takes the time to

listen and connect. It is this belief that

a hotel should feel like a family that drives her every

decision. Rather than imposing strict rules from above,

she fosters honest conversations and encourages new

ideas, inspiring the team to go the extra mile.

But Annie’s care does not stop at the hotel doors. She

is equally committed to the local community, often

saying that true hospitality means looking after the

people around you. You will often find Annie and The

Westgate team rolling up their sleeves alongside groups

like Downtown San Diego Kiwanis, cheering on the

vibrant energy of San Diego Pride, collaborating with

the Downtown San Diego Partnership, and working

with the San Diego County Lodging Association. It is

not just about writing a check; it is about being present

and being part of the solution. For Annie, it boils down

AquaVie Fitness + Wellness

Club at The Westgate

to something really simple: giving back and opening

doors for others.

A standout moment was in 2024, when The Westgate

stepped up as the official Travel Sponsor for San

Diego Pride. The hotel hosted a special reception

for InterPride, showing its dedication to building an

inclusive space where everyone is welcome. And it

does not end there - Annie makes sure that supporting

the community is a regular part of the hotel’s routine,

with regular donations and active participation in local

events.

Her forward-thinking even goes beyond community

service. Concerned about the environment, Annie has

pushed for meaningful changes at The Westgate. The

hotel’s switch to 95% LED lighting, the implementation

of a modern heat-exchange system, and a strong

effort in reducing waste have all

contributed to earning the 2024 Good

Earthkeeping Award at the San Diego

Gold Key Awards. These practical

steps show just how much she cares

about both people and the planet.

At the heart of it all, Annie Fitzgerald

Leadership

Empowering Jewish

Women to Lead

The fourth cohort of Jewish Federation’s Pauline

Foster Women’s Leadership Institute in Mexico

City, alongside Federation staff, in February 2025.

In May, the fourth cohort of Jewish Federation of

San Diego’s Pauline Foster Women’s Leadership

Institute will graduate, continuing a proud

legacy of cultivating Jewish women leaders

in San Diego. Since its inception in 2019, the

Institute has been a cornerstone of Federation’s

commitment to building a vibrant, resilient, and

inclusive Jewish future – by investing in the power of

women’s leadership.

Named for the indomitable Pauline Foster, z’’l, the

Institute was founded to honor her extraordinary life

as a community trailblazer. Pauline redefined what it

meant to be a Jewish leader in San Diego. As the first

woman to chair both Federation’s Board of Directors

and its Women’s Division (now known as Women’s

Philanthropy), she transformed the role of women

in Jewish communal life. Her courage, tenacity, and

philanthropic spirit continue to inspire generations.

That legacy is lovingly sustained by her daughters, Lisa

Foster, Marcia Hazan and Karen Silverman, whose

generosity ensures this program thrives.

70 MAY 2025 | GBSAN.COM

Each year,

a carefully

selected group

of exceptional

Jewish women

come together

through the

Institute to

explore what

it means to

lead with

Jewish values.

Monthly

learning

sessions,

intimate

mentorship from community leaders,

immersive retreats, and hands-on

experiences create a holistic journey of

growth, connection, and impact.

Institute participants engage in a

leadership building activity during

the program’s Fall 2024 retreat.

This year’s cohort of 17 women

exemplifies the program’s depth and

power. In February, the group traveled

to Mexico City, where they visited a

number of local programs – including

WomPower, a pioneering organization

that elevates female changemakers –

and engaged with the city’s vibrant

Jewish institutions and rich cultural history. They

explored themes of resilience and identity through the

lens of Frida Kahlo’s life and art, returning home with

new perspectives and deeper bonds.

Participant Allison Wolpoff described the journey as

life changing. “I have been a part of many leadership

courses in the past, but none focused on Jewish

women,” she shared with GB Magazine. “It was a

unique opportunity to make new friends, deepen my

connection with Jewish leaders, and strengthen my

own leadership skills. As a result of the program, I

“You learn

that sharing

with other

people is truly

gratifying.”

am more in

touch with

my strengths

as a leader

and my sense

of purpose

as a Jewish

woman.”

This powerful

sense of

purpose is at

the heart of

Federation’s

strategy. The

challenges

facing

Jewish communities – including

rising antisemitism, polarization,

and disconnection – require strong,

insightful leadership rooted in Jewish

values and committed to unity. The

Pauline Foster Women’s Leadership

Institute is answering that call, one

cohort at a time.

Graduates of the Institute go on to lead

synagogues, schools, and nonprofit

boards, bringing with them wisdom,

confidence, and community cultivated

through the program. They are not just the future

of Jewish leadership – they are shaping its present.

Pauline Foster once said, “You learned that sharing

with other people is truly gratifying.” Today, through

the leadership of women inspired by her example, that

spirit lives on.

Diego’s work to build a stronger, more resilient Jewish

Compassion

Past. Present. Future. Hope.

Mosaic mural completed in

2023 as a community tribute

Over its 75-year history, Father Joe’s Villages has been at the forefront of

addressing the challenges of homelessness, continually evolving with

innovation and compassion. Beginning in 1950, the organization operated

as a soup kitchen downtown out of St. Mary of the Wayside Chapel. Under

Father Joe Carroll’s visionary leadership, the organization grew towards

a model that embraced a holistic and client-centered approach to provide

comprehensive pathways to stability.

Now under the leadership of Deacon Jim Vargas, Father Joe’s Villages is strategically confronting

the entangled complexities of homelessness by addressing its underlying determinants, including

escalating housing

costs, substance

use disorders,

and chronic

health conditions.

As Father

Joe’s Villages

celebrates its 75th

anniversary, it

stands as the most

prominent and

longest-serving

provider of

homeless services

in our community,

earning national

recognition as a

thought leader.

In 2025, Father

Joe’s Villages will

complete and

continue several

transformative

projects to address

the complex

challenges

individuals

and families

experiencing

homelessness face.

These projects

include opening a

248-bed recovery

sober shelter and

a 44-bed detox

facility, as well

as launching the

operation of 130

shelter beds at the

Veterans Village of

San Diego.

These and many

other initiatives

reflect their

dedication to

prioritizing the needs and voices of our most vulnerable

neighbors and how philanthropy makes a positive

difference in their lives. Father Joe’s Villages is sincerely

grateful for San Diego’s sustained support for the past

75 years and your commitment to helping achieve their

future goals.

A

lo largo de sus 75 años de existencia,

Father Joe ‘s Villages se ha mantenido

firme y enfocado en los desafíos

que implican la situación de calle,

buscando siempre evolucionar

con compasión e innovación. La

organización, que comenzó a operar

en 1950, se inició como un comedor en el centro de

la ciudad, en el exterior de la capilla St. Mary of the

Wayside.

Newest affordable housing building opened in 2022

Compassion

Behind the Mask

A STORY OF HOPE FOR ELI

Eli with Mario

Before coming to the Legal Aid Society

of San Diego (LASSD), Eli, an elderly

man with multiple mental and physical

disabilities, felt overwhelmed by life’s

challenges. “I was totally out of my

depth, beside myself unable to cope with

housing issues. Access to healthcare was

very often denied or made impossible,” Eli shared with

GB Magazine. After seeking help from multiple agencies

without success, Eli was at his breaking point.

With nowhere else to turn, he reached out to LASSD,

hoping to secure reliable housing, navigate the complex

healthcare system, and rebuild his life. “I wanted to

stabilize, live independently, and become an effective

member of society,” he explained.

LASSD began working with Eli immediately, helping

him with the difficult process of completing his Section

8 rental assistance recertification, which had become a

barrier due to his health challenges. LASSD secured the

needed documentation and even helped cover the cost

of his service dog Mario’s vaccination using emergency

funds, ensuring compliance with his lease.

However, shortly after submitting his recertification,

Eli faced a new challenge: a sudden increase in his rent

for reasons that were never explained to him. “This

uncertainty made everything worse for me,” Eli said.

LASSD acted quickly, connecting him to its Housing

Team, who uncovered the problem. The property he

was renting had been sold, and the new owner had not

updated the housing authority. Because the housing

authority did not have the information

needed to issue the rental assistance

payment, the landlord was overcharging

Eli. LASSD worked tirelessly to resolve

the issue, ensuring payments were

reinstated.

In addition to housing support, LASSD

connected Eli to Enhanced Care

Management to streamline his medical

and health-related services. Eli now has

a comprehensive care plan and better

access to healthcare, including medical,

dental, and food assistance.

As he reflects on his journey, Eli says,

“I feel human again.” He credits LASSD

with helping him regain stability and

independence, and he is now eager to

advocate for others in need of assistance.

“LASSD has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders,” he

said, his gratitude evident.

Legal Aid

Thanks to the LASSD’s donors and

Cortina d’Ampezzo

QUEEN OF THE DOLOMITES

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

92 MAY 2025 | GBSAN.COM

Nestled in the mountains of northeastern

Italy is the quaint and picturesque town of

Cortina d’Ampezzo. Cortina, as the locals

refer to it, sits in the heart of the Veneto

Dolomites, a mountains range that is

part of the Alps and a UNESCO World

Heritage Site. Cortina was propelled into

the spotlight by the Winter Olympics in 1956 and will soon

be hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics. The region offers

majestic peaks and spectacular views which in the winter

makes for 140 ski runs, or, during the rest of the year,

hiking trails, Via Ferrata (climbing routes with cables and

ladders) and mountaintop refugios complete with cafes,

bars and rustic accommodations. The city is found in the

valley below and the

more extreme locations

and adventures are

accessible by funivia –

cable cars, gondolas and

funiculars.

Lago di Braies

The closest major airport is Venice,

and while Europe has fantastic trains,

we rented a car as it offered us the

flexibility to enjoy the town as well as

the surrounding towns and valleys.

The entire area is an idyllic alpine

retreat that offers many options of

trails to explore forests, meadows,

streams, and more. We enjoyed some

amazing hiking spots along enchanting

lakes, among them Lake Misurina

which is the largest alpine lake in the

Dolomites, Lake Sorapis famous for

its aquamarine water and Lake Braies

with its Alpine lodging and dining. Our

entire stay, we were dwarfed by the Tre

Cime di Lavaredo the three distinctive

peaks that tower above the valley.

Enchanting lakes, natural beauty,

beautiful walking trails with majestic

views make Cortina d’Ampezzo a

perfect ESCAPADITA.
