I am from Carroll, Iowa! I was born here. I grew up here. I

helped raise a family here. I have lived in a handful of other

towns.

Just enough to convince me that this is

where I belong. Carroll has so much to offer.

Everything in Carroll is just a short distance

away. What an advantage! Everywhere in Carroll

is less than a 10-minute drive and walking

distance for those who are able.

Merchants Park, a baseball stadium so well

maintained that we serve as host city for the Class 1A & 2A

State Baseball tournaments, is located.

You will also find the Outdoor Aquatic Center, Carroll Rec

Center, the high school football stadium, and Graham Park

all in close proximity and each offering entertainment opportunities.

Consider using the Aquatic Center featuring water

slides, a pool area and wading area for young children.

The football stadium is available to the public to exercise

during the day. The Carroll Rec Center has an indoor pool,

elevated walking track, exercise equipment and gymnasium.

Graham Park features a children’s playground, outdoor basketball,

tennis courts, pickleball courts, a skate park, sand

volleyball, shelter house, and plenty of green space.

Our city features state-of-the-art healthcare facilities, over

30 bars & restaurants, two golf courses, an extensive bike/

walking trail system, numerous local parks and more.

With all our town has to offer I believe what really sells

Carroll are the people who live here. Each business in town,

each home, each park, each road and the list goes on was

the result of an individual dream to make one’s life and their

Welcome to Carroll! Home of the Iowa High School 1A and 2A

State Baseball Tournament and Carroll Merchants baseball!

These great baseball events are all played at

historic Merchants Park Stadium which is an

easy walk from Graham Park near the intersection

of Highway 30 and Grant Road.

Merchants Park Stadium was originally constructed

in 1949 to seat 1,500 fans. Over the

years the stadium has hosted many events,

including baseball, wrestling, music concerts

and more! Currently, the stadium is home to

the Carroll Merchants baseball team of the

MINK league, Carroll Tigers and the Kuemper Catholic Knights.

Merchants Park recently underwent a $1.3 million renovation to

enhance player and fan experience with new lighting, dugouts

and protective screens.

Just to the north of Merchants Park you will find the Carroll

Family Aquatic Center and south of the Stadium is the newly

renovated Carroll Recreation Center. The Rec has a 25 yard sixlane

indoor swimming pool including shallow and deep water, a

sauna, whirlpool, a racquetball court, newly remodeled weight

training and exercise room, and a gymnasium to play basketball,

volleyball, tennis and pickleball. Newly renovated locker rooms

will be appreciated by families and individuals using the facility.

If you want to experience the outdoors, check out the many

parks within the City limits or the Carroll Municipal Golf Course!

Within the City’s 12 parks you will find many activities for families

including tennis courts, pickleball courts, disc golf, basketball

courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, playground equipment

and a skate park.

Just to the south of town is Swan Lake State Park which is a

510-acre multi-use area, including fishing, canoeing, paddle

boating, kayaking, biking, disc golf, camping and picnicking.

The 33 mile long Sauk Rail Trail begins at Swan Lake and winds

through the City of Carroll before heading north out of town to

connect to Black Hawk State Park.

The City is home to the Carroll Historical Museum which preserves

the history of Carroll County for our citizens and visitors.

The main museum is in the former Carnegie Library Building and

other displays are maintained in the Schoolhouse and Log Cabin

in Graham Park and the Farmstead Museum at Swan Lake .

Carroll Children’s Museum is an inclusive indoor play space that

children can enjoy any time of the year. Let their imagination

thrive while exploring the infant corner, play garden and kitchen,

tractor climbing structure and slide and so much more! They

offer weekly crafts and rotating exhibits.

There is plenty to do in downtown Carroll, including shopping

where you can find many different stores, from shoes to clothing

and dining at a multitude of restaurants.

An indoor space to entertain young children with engaging,

educational, and creative play. The Carroll Children’s

Museum offers weekly crafts and rotating exhibits, providing

a new experience every time you visit. All-day admission

is $8 per child 6mo - 15yrs and the first two accompanying

adults per child are free.

The Festival of Lights

Swan Lake State Park


The Festival of Light is the area’s premier Christmas

lighting displays, which can be viewed from your vehicle.

The “Swan Lake Holiday Lights” is an annual fundraising

event by the Carroll County EMS Association. The Festival

of Lights runs nightly from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, beginning

December 1st and continuing through December 31st.

Kellan’s Kingdom

Kellan’s Kingdom is an all-inclusive playground built to be

accessible to kids with physical disabilities and those on

the autism spectrum.

The Sauk Rail Trail



The Sauk Rail Trail is a 33-mile concrete or asphalt multiuse

recreational trail located and managed by both the Sac

and Carroll County Conservation Boards. It is the first recreational

trail in the state of Iowa to connect two state parks.

You can start in Lake View near Blackhawk Lake State Park

or in Swan Lake State Park south of Carroll.

Swan Lake State Park is managed

by the Carroll County Conservation

Board. It is a 510-acre multi-use area,

including 110-acre lake. The land was

acquired by the Department of Natural

Resources in 1933. In 1959, the Carroll

Conservation Board signed a management

agreement with the Department

of Natural Resources receiving

authority to maintain and develop the

park. The lake is surrounded by wooded

area home to deer, wild turkey,

small mammals and a variety of birds,

making this park popular for wildlife

viewing. Swan Lake State Park has the

largest, most diverse campground in

Carroll County with 44 full-hook up

sites including 20 long term sites, 46

electric and water sites, 22 electric

sites and a large area for tent camping!

Other amenities include two shower

houses, firewood and ice sales, dump

station, boat rentals, and campground

hosts.

Constructed in 1949, Carroll Merchants

Park has a rich history with

America’s greatest pastime. The

diamond originally hosted Carroll’s

first semi-pro baseball team, the

Merchants, from the late 1940s and

the early 1950s. Merchants Park later

served as a venue for the Iowa high

school state baseball championship

from the 1990s until 2005. Check out

the summer schedule to catch the 1A

and 2A State Baseball Championships

or a Merchants’ game. The Merchants

will compete against the Clarinda

A’s, Chillicothe Mudcats, Jefferson

City Renegades, Nevada Griffons, St.

Joseph Mustangs, Sedalia Bombers,

and the Warren County Crop Dusters.

1969, this non-profit organization features

highlights of the Carroll community calendar

is the Live + Local event hosted

by the Carroll Chamber of Commerce.

This Chamber-sponsored event is free

How to get a Library Card:

Children can sign up for their own

library card when they can write their

first and last name by themselves.

(Sorry parents no helping.) That’s our

only requirement. Easy, so have your

child practice writing their name.

Adults must have a photo ID with their

current address time for requesting a

card application, or bring in the ID you

do have and a bill (or anything) that has

your current address on it.

We can also have you fill out a postcard

with your current address and we’ll mail it

to you. When you receive it, return to the

library and we will issue you a library card

(remember to bring in your photo ID).

Library cards for residents of qualified

City, County, and Towns under contract

for Library service shall not have an

expiration date on them but you will

occasionally be asked to update your

information as phone numbers and

e-mail addresses change frequently.

Inactive patrons (those who have not

borrowed material for 3 years) will be

removed from the automated system

every three years.

“Friends of the Library”:

Please help our organization grow by

becoming a Friend. Meetings are held

in the library’s large meeting room.

We also hold an annual book sale in

the fall. Annual dues are $10.00, and

Lifetime membership $150.00. We

are always looking for people willing to

help with various activities and to serve

History

From 1837 to 1851 Carroll County

was part of Benton, which covered all

the territory between its northern and

southern lines and extended to the

Missouri River. In 1851 Carroll County

was established and attached to Polk

County; in 1853 it was attached to

Shelby County; in 1855 it was attached

to Guthrie County.

Enos Butrick, the first white settler,

came to Carroll County in 1851 and

spent two years; he returned in 1854

with his wife and seven children to Jasper

Township. In August 1867, when

the Cedar Rapids and Missouri Railroad

was extending its tracks through Carroll

County, Carroll City was platted for

a town before a single dwelling house

was built. With only 688 people in the

entire county, the county seat was in

Carrollton. In an election voters chose

(88 to 30) to move the county seat to

Carroll City; and in April 1868 the county

records were moved to a makeshift

courthouse, a construction shack near

the railroad tracks.

A railroad station for the Chicago and

North Western Railroad was the second

building constructed. Businesses

with residences upstairs followed. The

first schoolhouse, a 40’ by 40’ structure,

was built in 1868. Growth was rapid:

in 1870 Carroll had 384 residents; in

1873, 563; in 1875, 812; in 1880, 1385;

in 1885, 1885. In 1875 Carroll City was

renamed Carroll. Like Carroll County

and Carrollton, the town’s name came

from Charles Carroll of Carrollton,

Maryland, the only Catholic signer of

the Declaration of Independence.

A massive fire that began in a Fourth

Street saloon on September 25, 1879,

wiped out the downtown district from

the C&NW tracks north to Sixth Street

and between Main and Adams Streets.

Besides all the businesses lost, many

residences were destroyed because

citizens lived in or above the stores.

Rebuilding began within weeks as the

frame buildings were replaced with

brick structures.

By the 1960s many of these 1880s

structures were aging, and a downtown

urban renewal project from 1963 to

1974 resulted in “Iowa’s Newest City.”

In 1992 the second urban renewal

phase was celebrated with the World’s

Longest Ribbon Cutting.

Progress has always been a hallmark

of Carroll. Because of forward-thinking,

civic-minded individuals and groups, in

the past half century Carroll has grown

to include New Hope Village, the Rec

Center, the Corridor of Commerce,

preservation of the C&NW / UP depot,

a new hospital, DMACC, the Conservation

Education Center, new fire station,

skate park and basketball courts; new

industries, and expansion of existing

organizations.

In 2017 initiatives such as the renovation

of Merchants (baseball) Park,

the rebuilding of the football stadium,

and the upgrading of the city library

and city hall continue the progressive

movement forward into the next 150

years.

vision, which has made it the hub

of West Central Iowa. And by continuing

the traditions of the past, the future

of Carroll will be secure for the leaders

of tomorrow,” said Mayor Eric P. Jensen

(2016 - 2021).
