Family’s
lucky
escape
from fire
JUST IN TIME:
Lisa Coetzee
managed to wake up
her husband Cobus
and get their
3-year-old son
Ashton out of the
burning house on
Easter Sunday. Lisa’s
sister also escaped
unharmed.
• By Daniel Alvey
“WHEN I opened the
bathroom door, I just saw a wall
of flames outside the window.”
That is what Lisa Coetzee was
shocked to find just after 5am
on Easter Sunday.
Coetzee woke up to a noise
she thought was the bathroom
fan, but it turned out to be a
large fire in the carport.
At the time, Coetzee’s
husband Cobus, their
3-year-old son Ashton and
Lisa’s sister were all asleep in
the Norwood Rd house, which
is on a farm between Burnham
and Dunsandel.
“I just screamed at the house
to get up, there’s a fire,” Coetzee
said.
Her first thought was to grab
the fire extinguisher, but that
quickly turned to getting everyone
out alive.
While the house had fire
alarms, they did not go off until
the fire started to crack the glass
windows.
Coetzee said it was just luck
she woke up to the noise of the
fire first, allowing the family
a little more time to get out
uninjured.
THE FUTURE for Upper
Selwyn Huts residents may soon
be determined, following an
independent report that suggests
a retreat from the lakeside
settlement will not be necessary
within the next 30 years.
The council will consider the
report and the next steps for the
93 residents at its May 21 meeting.
Initially, the council had
planned for the settlement to be
vacated by 2039. However, after
residents mounted a successful
legal challenge, the council
agreed to reconsider and has
spent the past eight months
consulting with them on future
options.
The Upper Selwyn Huts is
one of three settlements on the
shores of Te Waihora / Lake
Ellesmere fighting for their future.
Greenpark Huts is expected
to be vacated by June 30, while
Lower Selwyn Huts residents are
still negotiating a 10-year sunset
lease with the Department of
Conservation.
The independent Jacobs report,
produced after the council consultation,
found no immediate
need for relocation.
“The available climate change
and flooding information does
not seem to support the need to
retreat in the next 15-30 years
(pending a significant event),”
the report said.
It also recommended council
new hope for their future
DISAGREEMENT: Upper Selwyn Huts Owners Association
member Kirrily Fea said the council should remove the finite
term when deciding on the settlement’s future.
consider bringing the settlement
onto the district-wide water and
sewage rate.
If not included, the council
should provide residents with
clear information about the
cost of necessary infrastructure
improvements, such as a pipeline,
to allow for better financial
planning, the report said.
Since the report was completed
in March, councillors
have held several closed-door
workshops to discuss the huts’
future.
The minutes from the
workshop show councillors
are leaning towards offering
a fixed-term agreement with
“trigger points” – significant
flooding, persistent ponding, or
major damage requiring a third
of the settlement to be rebuilt –
dictating any retreat.
Upper Selwyn Huts Owners
Association member Kirrily Fea
said while they accept the use of
trigger points as a method for
retreat, they want the council to
remove the finite term.
“It was really disappointing to
see they were still looking at a
finite term. There is nothing to
justify that.”
She urged the council not to
rush its decision and instead
work collaboratively with the
community.
“The remaining issues we
believe can be worked through
with mutual respect and cooperation.”
Community always came first for
Being expelled from
high school did not
stop the late Bill Woods
from giving years of his
life to the community.
He died on Good Friday
aged 82. Daniel Alvey
reports
A KIND and gentle man who
fought for the little guy is how
former mayor Bill Woods is
remembered.
Bill died on Good Friday after
spending six weeks in hospital
care at Mayfair Home following a
short and unexpected illness.
One of his daughters, Carmen
Nolan, and a close friend were by
Bill’s side when he passed.
“He was a very good father and
a very good man,” Carmen said.
She said her father was always
known as Bill, but to the family he
was Woodsie.
Bill was mayor of Selwyn from
1992 to 1995 and also served
several terms as a councillor
between 1989 and 2004.
He also spent some time on the
Malvern Community Board and
was an Environment Canterbury
councillor.
Only a one-term mayor, Bill
stood for the role in multiple
elections after being voted out.
DEDICATED: In 2022, Bill Woods was awarded a Queen’s
Service Medal for his contributions to conservation and the
community.
“His view on it was he didn’t
necessarily want to become
mayor, but he wanted to give
people an alternative person to
vote for,” Carmen said.
Bill made several unsuccessful
attempts to enter national politics
between 1978 and 2014, first as
a candidate for Labour in the
Selwyn Electorate between 1978
and 1982 and then later as a list
MP for NZ First in 2011 and 2014.
Deputy mayor Malcolm
Lyall was a first-term councillor
when Bill was elected mayor and
described himself as Bill’s “righthand
man”.
“Very interesting character was
our ‘Willie’ Woods. He always
fought for the underdog,” Lyall
said.
During the three-year
term, Lyall said he helped Bill
restructure the council, which
was still adjusting from the 1989
amalgamation of Ellesmere,
Malvern and part of Paparua
(west Christchurch) to form the
Selwyn District Council.
“In doing that, we upset a lot
of people and it became a split
council. There was a vote of no
PARTNERS: Bill and Linda
married in 1967 and
remained together until
Linda’s death in 1992. In
2016, Bill, then-president of
the Summit Road Society,
donated $600,000 towards
the group’s purchase of
Tussock Hill Farm on the
condition the park in the Port
Hills be named to honour his
late wife.
confidence in Bill and all sorts of
things,” Lyall said.
In 1995, Bill lost the mayoralty
to Michael McEvedy.
Lyall recalled often having Bill
over for dinner to help support
him after his wife Linda died in
1992.
“If he was over this way (in
Prebbleton), we’d invite him in
and make sure he would get a
square meal.”
He recalled Bill’s slightly
scruffy appearance.
“I was always on him to buy
a bloody suit. He had these blue
trousers and a black jacket that
never really meshed properly.
from 2009 until late 2023, but
remained a board member and
RIDING RAILS: Bill (right)
spent the early part of his
working life as a train driver.
last year was granted honorary
life membership.
His biggest contribution to the
society was donating $600,000
towards the purchase of Tussock
Hill Farm in the Port Hills.
The land was named the Linda
Woods Reserve, in honour of
Bill’s late wife.
Bill was born in Avondale,
Auckland, the eighth of Vi and
William Woods’ nine children.
Expelled from Avondale College,
he started working on the
railways with his brother Alan.
Bill trained as an engine driver
and by 17 was New Zealand’s
youngest qualified steam train
driver.
In 1962, the railways offered
Bill a chance to move to Springfield,
living in the single men’s
accommodation near the railway
station.
He was a frequent visitor to
Hoglands Store, where a certain
young woman worked.
The woman was Linda, who
would later become his wife.
“He proposed to Linda with a
very romantic ‘there’s a posting
available in Otira with a house,
for a married couple’,” Carmen
said.
In 1967 they moved to Otira as
a married couple.
The couple later had two
daughters, Carmen and Angela.
TIRELESS: Bill Woods was Selwyn mayor from 1992-1995
but continued to be involved in the community. Along with
Taege Engineering he helped rebuild the Springfield Donut
after the original was badly damaged by arson.
Carmen recalled a funny story
from her father’s railways work.
“In the 1960s, dad and (his
friend) Stevie were on a train. It
was a hot day, so they stopped the
train and skinny-dipped in a pool
near the line about Cass.
“The train started to move, so
these two naked, barefoot young
men had to sprint for the train
through scrub and scramble on to
stop it.”
In 1969, the couple returned to
Springfield, buying the Springfield
Poultry farm in 1971.
Bill left the railways in 1973 and
worked as a general handyman for
the Watson family at their horse
stud for many years.
In 1983, Bill and Linda bought
the Springfield Store so it could
remain open for the locals.
“This was the start of decades
of community support and
involvement,” Carmen said.
“Woodsie physically helped
build the Sheffield Pavilion, the St
John Ambulance garage in Darfield
and was involved in many
fundraising activities.”
After the store, the Sheffield
Garage was Bill and Linda’s next
project, owning the business until
Linda’s death in 1992.
In 2012, Bill, along with Taege
Engineering, rebuilt the Springfield
Donut after the original was
badly damaged by arson.
Springfield Community Association
chair Graeme Dawson said
Bill was always a tireless advocate
for Malvern.
“He was passionate about what
he believed in.”
In recent years, Bill helped Templeton
residents fight the Fulton
Hogan-run Roydon Quarry and
continued to hold the construction
company to account once the
quarry began operations.
“He was an eco warrior and
activist right to the end and
always put the community first,”
Carmen said.
Supporting the Restoration and Protection of
Selwyn’s Biodiversity
Applications are now open for the Predator Free
2025 Fund. The fund’s purpose is to support
the restoration and protection of Waikirikiri
Selwyn’s indigenous biodiversity (plants and
wildlife) through the elimination of introduced
predator animals.
Communities will play a critical role in Aotearoa New
Zealand becoming predator free, as to be successful,
support and commitment is required throughout the
country and across communities. Increasingly people
around Aotearoa New Zealand are coming together
to form local predator trapping programmes.
An example of great community collaboration is
at Taumutu, where Dave Tilson (pictured above)
Leeston Park Playground Set
for Exciting Upgrades
The existing playground at Leeston Park will
temporarily close in May as part of the first stage of a
planned upgrade. This initial refresh will include the
replacement of some play equipment and an update
to the safety surfacing, improving the experience for
children of all ages.
The upgraded play space will feature new items
designed for both preschoolers and primary/senioraged
children, offering a wider range of activities and
encouraging active, imaginative play.
In addition to this first phase, an extra play item is
scheduled to be installed later in the year, adding
further variety and fun to the playground. These
works are part of a broader vision outlined in the
Leeston Park Master Plan, with further developments
to follow as budget becomes available.
Thank you for your patience while this important
upgrade is being carried out. The improvements
are aimed at making the park a safer, more
enjoyable space for families and children now
and into the future.
The traps are moved around local farms, waterways
and wetlands to reduce predator numbers, to protect
indigenous wildlife and improve the success of
native plantings. Dave has been working with Te
Taumutu Rūnanga and Pest Free Banks Peninsula
and now has a small team of local volunteers helping
him manage the traps.
Last year Dave and his team caught over 2,000
predators, including 1,268 possums. The work is
paying off, with a Matuku/Australasian bittern
(Threatened – Nationally Critical) recently being
spotted at a new planting site in the area.
Applications close on 30 May 2025. For more
LONG-SERVING Springs Ward
councillor Grant Miller will not
seek reelection in October.
After four terms on the council,
Miller has decided to step down
to focus on his private governance
roles.
He joins Ellesmere Ward
councillor Shane Epiha and
Malvern Ward councillor Bob
Mugford, who are also not
running again.
Miller announced his decision
during Tai Tapu’s Anzac service.
He said he had originally
planned to serve for just nine
years but chose to stay on longer
to finish key projects.
“I stayed one term longer than I
expected,” Miller said.
Among the projects Miller
wanted to complete was setting
up Rolleston’s Health Hub, which
will have a GP service operating
from next month.
He also is contributing to
Whata Rau, Leeston’s new library
and community centre, by
leading a community reference
group which will help decide the
design of building.
Construction of Whata Rau is
set to start in March next year.
While stepping back from
council, Miller will continue as
chair of Central Plains Water
Trust Ltd and Transwaste
Canterbury Ltd.
“I want to focus on those
companies and really drive those
forward,” he said.
Miller said it is good to rotate
“I think it’s healthy that new
blood comes into the council at
regular occurrences.”
During his time on council,
Miller often pushed for a stronger
focus on doing the basics well.
He voted against the
council-controlled organisation
(WSCCO).
“I think Selwyn should be a
much smaller, more focused
council. I think it’s trying to do
too much,” he said.
“I think we need to be very
clear with our ratepayers about
what we do – and do it and well
– and also be very clear what we
don’t do.”
Before he steps down, Miller’s
priority will be helping set up the
WSCCO.
“The real challenge now is
making that organisation as
effective as it possibly can be.”
While he will still stay
connected to the council through
his private governance roles,
Miller said he will not be giving
advice from the sidelines.
“I intend to step back and let
the new person put their stamp
on it, set their direction and serve
the Springs Ward in whatever way
they see fit.”
Councils investigate
transfer depot trial
• By Daniel Alvey
THERE IS disagreement about
whether an aggregate company
was legally operating without a
resource consent.
For about two months until
Easter weekend, Greystone
Screening and Crushing Ltd
was operating a transfer depot
on converted farmland spanning
Goulds, Ellesmere Junction
and Selwyn Rds near Rolleston.
Company director Craig
Stevenson told Selwyn Times the
space was being used to store
and transfer aggregate collected
from nearby rivers to other sites.
“We have done a proof of
concept over the last two
months. That has allowed us
time to actually see if it’s a viable
option to operate as a business.”
After residents complained,
the district council and
Environment Canterbury both
started investigating.
Stevenson believed the
company was following the
District Plan.
“From what we read within
the District Plan, we felt we were
doing a permitted activity,” he
said.
But the district council appears
to disagree.
Said head of regulatory Sue
Atherton: “The District Plan
does not differentiate between
a trial or a longer-term activity,
the same rules apply in either
case.”
Stevenson said if the proof
of concept failed, the land
would be turned back into a
silage pad.
A person living nearby told
Selwyn Times there was no
notice of the trial or signage
about what was happening on
the property.
The person said trucks going
in and out of the property were
producing a lot of dust and
noise.
Stevenson told Selwyn Times
the company could have done
a better job of communicating
with residents after the complaints.
He said the company had
ceased operations at the site
and was now in the process
of making a resource consent
application.
Fire, water damage
ruin rural house
• From page 1
On the way out, Cobus shut the
bedroom doors to try and slow
the spread of the fire.
Coetzee was told by firefighters
this likely helped.
Once outside, Coetzee used the
garden hose to try and fight the
fire, but as it grew she stopped.
“I grabbed the garden hose
to douse the fire . . . when the
flames started eating the door
that’s when I abandoned the hose
and got a lot further away,” she
said.
Meanwhile, Coetzee’s sister
was dialling 111.
“When my sister called them,
she couldn’t remember our
address, she just said Norwood
Rd.”
After giving up on fighting the
fire, Coetzee phoned 111 to give
them the address.
“I thought I can’t hear sirens,
and it’s all going up, then they
were there just after that,” she
said.
Within 15 minutes from the
first 111 call, fire crews from
the Dunsandel Volunteer Fire
Brigade arrived, backed up by
Rolleston, Kirwee and Darfield.
BURNT: Lisa Coetzee’s car was also damaged by the fire.
“They were amazing,” Coetzee
said.
The fire destroyed the laundry,
toilet and bathroom, but
firefighters were able to stop it
getting into the bedrooms and
the lounge. However, much of
the house was water damaged
after the kitchen and bathroom
pipes burst.
Since the fire, the family has
been salvaging what they can
from the home. They have also
received donations of clothing
and household items from the
community.
“I’ve had a team of friends who
have been running some of our
clothes through the laundromat
for us, but even with a few
washes, some still smell like
smoke,” Coetzee said.
Coetzee’s car was also
damaged by the fire.
The family will move into
another house on the farm.
The cause of the fire is still to
be determined.
‘The goal is to beat the old man’
• By Daniel Alvey
SOUTHBRIDGE father and son
Nigel and Brodie McCartin are
among 27 volunteer firefighters
from the district preparing to take
on the Auckland Sky Tower climb
in just under a month.
On May 24, firefighters from
across the country will race up
51 floors – 1103 steps – all while
wearing full firefighting gear
weighing about 25kg.
The annual event raises money
for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer
New Zealand.
For Nigel, this will be his third
time tackling the tower. It will
be Brodie’s first and the friendly
rivalry is already heating up.
Said Nigel: “We’ll probably race
each other, it will be fun.”
Said Brodie:” The goal is to beat
the old man. I’d say he will have a
few tricks up his sleeve he hasn’t
told me about yet.”
While there is some
competitive spirit between them,
both agree the real goal is to raise
funds and awareness for a worthy
cause.
“It will be great to support the
people who are struggling and
give a bit back to them,” Brodie
said.
The district’s largest team
comes from the Dunsandel
Volunteer Fire Brigade, with nine
firefighters taking part.
TRAINING: Dunsandel Volunteer Fire Brigade did 24 hours
of stair climbing to help prepare for the Sky Tower.
To help train and raise money,
the brigade ran a 24-hour stair
climb at Flex Fitness Rolleston.
During the event, they climbed
6789 floors – equivalent to 133.11
Sky Towers – and raised more
than $1100. Members of the
public also joined in, climbing
a combined total of 8200 floors
(160.78 Sky Towers).
From 10am to noon on
Saturday, the Lincoln Volunteer
Fire Brigade will be at Flex Fitness
Lincoln using the stair machines
to raise funds and awareness
ahead of the big climb.
Selwyn Parenting Week returns this May with real support for real families
Parenting is one of the most important jobs in the world
and lets be honest, it can also be one of the hardest.
selwyn Parenting Week is about real talk, real support,
and bringing our community together to navigate
parenting with honesty, strength, and heart.
In a world full of pressure, constant comparison, and endless
opinions online, Selwyn Parenting Week 2025 is here to cut
through the noise with something real. From Monday 12
May to Sunday 18 May, we’re bringing together expert voices,
practical tools, and a whole lot of heart to support parents,
grandparents, carers, and whānau across Selwyn.
This is your chance to hear from some of Aotearoa’s most
trusted parenting educators and advocates — all in one
powerful week. Whether you’re raising toddlers or teens,
this week is designed to help you feel more confident, more
connected, and a little less alone.
You’ll hear from Nigel Latta with his real, raw, and often
hilarious take on parenting today. Professor Julia Rucklidge
brings groundbreaking insights into how micronutrition can
support our kids’ mental health and resilience. Holly Brooker
joins us online with a practical and empowering session on
parenting in the digital age. Dawn Wilson from The Buddy
Zone creates space for parents of neurodivergent children
to feel seen, supported, and better equipped, and Craig
McGuigan shares the powerful story of Kidz Need Dadz and
how strong father–child relationships can change lives.
We’re also tackling big topics like eating disorders in young
people, raising neurodivergent children, supporting picky
eaters, and the link between nutrition and mental health —
all delivered by professionals who get it and want to help.
Most events are free, thanks to the generous support of our
community partners. A few sessions carry a small cost — but
these are heavily subsidised to keep them accessible for
everyone. We’re literally just covering our speaker fees and
venue hire, so we can continue offering quality support
without barriers. If cost is a barrier to attending, please reach
out — we know times are tough and we don’t want anyone
to miss out.
And it’s not just about the events — throughout the week,
we’ll also be sharing free resources, tools, and tips across
our social channels, signposting support and providing easy
access to trusted info and local service providers.
This isn’t about perfect parenting. It’s about real parenting,
and knowing you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.
Selwyn Parenting Week 2025 is proudly brought to you by
the Selwyn Parenting Network — a grassroots, registered
charity working across Selwyn and wider Mid Canterbury
to support families through connection, education, and
practical, community-led support. We’re here to walk
alongside parents, offering navigation support and helping
to bridge the gaps in access to services. We advocate for
what’s needed in our communities — especially in New
Zealand’s fastest-growing region.
Spaces are limited and bookings are essential — so get in
Township named after local sheep run
What’s in a
Name
Dunsandel
THE NAME Dunsandel was
chosen for the township from
the local sheep run, Dunsandel,
which the railway line ran
through from 1872. It was owned
by British absentee landowner,
the Hon. Robert Daly.
He had named his run after
the estate where he grew up,
‘Dunsandle’ in County Galway,
Far left – An early photo of
St Thomas Anglican Church,
Dunsandel.
Ireland. The name was derived
from the Gaelic word ‘dun’,
meaning hill suitable for a
fortress, and ‘sandle’, thought
to be an early Celtic chieftain.
How Dunsandel came to be spelt
differently from its originating
name remains a mystery.
In 1873, Dunsandel could
boast a 24-room hotel, general
store, butchery, blacksmith shop
and grain store. It benefitted
from people and business
moving there from a flood-prone
settlement close to where the
Selwyn River bridge is now.
The Dunsandel area was
named by Māori prior to
European settlement. The
name Te Atatiki a Te Wakaaro
literally translates as Te Atatiki
– ‘where the dawn was long in
appearing’ and Te Wakaaro – ‘a
Māori warrior’s name meaning
strength, consideration and
thought.’
SY Defiant wheat proves its strengths
SY DEFIANT, the winter wheat
cultivar from Syngenta, has
proven itself in the paddock,
delivering strong yields and
outstanding disease resistance.
Available through Cates,
SY Defiant has been grown by
a number of farmers across
Canterbury with excellent results
this past harvest.
Developed in the UK and
rigorously tested in New
Zealand, SY Defiant has proved
to offer strong performance.
“We were thrilled to introduce
SY Defiant to the market last
year,” said Cates agronomist Paul
Winter.
“It performed exceptionally
well in FAR’s Cereal
Performance Trials over two
consecutive seasons – not only
in yield, but in disease resistance
as well.”
Farmer James Thomas
was among the first to grow
SY Defiant on his farm at
Longbeach.
“We switched to SY Defiant
last year after growing another
high performing wheat variety
for several years.
“The crop was planted early
June and looked great all the
way through to harvest. It had
three applications of fungicide,
but never showed signs of high
disease pressure,” James said.
“We harvested the paddock in
Cates agronomist Liam McCormack walks through a field of SY Defiant wheat with a Mid Canterbury client.
early February and I was very
happy with the yield and grain
quality. Will grow again this
year.”
Paul noted the practical
benefits seen on-farm.
“With its robust disease
resistance and minimal
sprouting risk, SY Defiant
represented a low cost, low
risk option for our farming
community,” he said.
FAR trials confirmed SY
Defiant to be among the
top-performing winter wheat
varieties available, consistently
producing high yields across a
range of growing conditions –
both dry land and irrigated.
Its early maturity and short,
stiff straw allowed for easy
harvest and management.
Farmers across Canterbury have
responded positively, and demand
for SY Defiant seed has been
strong heading into this season.
• SY Defiant has a wide
sowing window from late
March through until mid-
July. Seed is available now
– visit cates.co.nz for further
Legal Matters
The Purchaser didn’t confirm
by the due date, so I can
cancel the contract, right?
While it is usually the case that if a purchaser doesn’t confirm the conditions
of a contract by the due date, the vendor has the right to cancel the contract
and look to sell to someone else, that’s not always the case. If the vendor had
obligations and fails to meet them, they may lose the right to cancel on that
particular date.
The relatively recent Supreme Court case of Melco Property Holdings (NZ) 2012
Limited v Anthony John Hall (Melco) is a good example of the vendor impeding
the purchaser’s ability to fulfil its contractual obligations; culminating in the
vendor losing the right to end the contract on the basis of non-fulfilment of a
condition by the purchaser.
Melco agreed to purchase a commercial property located in Lower Hutt from
Mr Hall. The Agreement for Sale and Purchase (Agreement) included a due
diligence clause under which Melco had to satisfy itself that the property
was appropriate for its requirements. After entering into the Agreement
Melco required a seismic assessment of the property and engaged a seismic
engineer. The engineer was scheduled to attend the property one day prior to
the due diligence period expiring. Mr Hall cancelled the visit just hours before it
was scheduled to proceed and subsequently sought to avoid the Agreement on
the basis that Melco did not satisfy or waive the due diligence condition by the
agreed deadline. Mr Hall then entered into an agreement with a third party to
sell the property at a significantly higher price.
It’s worth noting at this point that Melco operated its business from premises
at 1 and 3 Parliament Street, Lower Hutt and was therefore particularly keen to
acquire Mr Hall’s property at 5 Parliament Street so that Melco could expand
its business operations. Unsurprisingly, Melco chose not to rollover and accept
Mr Hall’s purported avoidance of the Agreement, arguing that Mr Hall was in
default of his obligations under the Agreement by failing to provide access to
the property for Melco to carry out its due diligence. Melco registered a caveat
on the Record of Title to protect its interests in the property.
Had Mr Hall validly ended the Agreement?
The Supreme Court held Mr Hall had a duty to facilitate access to the
property so that Melco could inspect it and complete its due diligence. The
Court accepted that Mr Hall did not facilitate access when he cancelled the
inspection. Mr Hall’s failure to allow access to the property at the scheduled
time had a material effect on Melco’s ability to satisfy the due diligence
condition. It was held that the caveat should not lapse. Reviewing the Record of
Title we can see the property has now been transferred from Mr Hall to Melco.
Buying or selling property extends beyond the transactional process. Engaging
a lawyer with the knowledge and expertise to thoroughly advise on all aspects
of due diligence and your legal rights, obligations and entitlements throughout
the process is important in the context of what may be the largest investment
you make in your lifetime. With the backing of the South Island’s largest
CALLS FOR CHANGE: Sheffield and Kirwee communities want their speed
limits on State Highway 73 dropped from 70km/h to 50km/h. A truck driver
was killed last month, crossing the road outside the Sheffield Pies shop.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
‘The main street is
a deadly hazard’
Thanks for highlighting speed limits
through Kirwee and Sheffield in the
Selwyn Times.
As the proprietor of the Kirwee
Challenge Service Station for the last 45
years and chief fire officer of the Kirwee
Volunteer Fire Brigade, I have witnessed
some serious motor vehicle accidents in
Kirwee’s main street.
In the 1970s, a young girl was killed
50m east of the service station crossing the
road. The speed limit was 100km/h.
Across the road from the service station
is a council information shelter and beside
that in the council reserve are two picnic
tables for motorists to stop for a break.
There are no public toilets so people use
the shrubs. Toilets are required.
We also have truck and bus parking
bays on both sides of the road opposite the
service station which are in use every day
with near-misses of drivers and people
making their way across the road to access
mail boxes at the service station, as there is
no street mail delivery in Kirwee.
The main street is a deadly hazard that
locals are very aware of, but not the passing
motorist. We expect a fatality any and
every day in Kirwee.
We have more than enough hazards
and concerns of safety that we have been
conveying to the powers to be, but always
falling on deaf ears.
-Stuart Jones (abridged), Kirwee
Yes. A 50km/h sign is required in
Sheffield.
A problem had been identified. A life
lost. One so far.
The locals, councillors and Kirwee
community committee chair are
advocating for their people. Time you
listened up in Wellington.
-Rob Davies
Ward structure
With a ward structure, we can only vote
for councillors standing for our ward. This
is, to me, a failing of local government.
Would it not be better if I could vote for
councillors I have faith in, whichever ward
they are from. Instead I have to vote for
those that I have no faith in, just because
they are in my ward and I have no choice.
No wonder so many do not vote.
Maybe instead of looking at the ward
structure we should look at the voting
structure. After all, does it matter if I want
to vote for someone in the Springs Ward
yet I live in the Rolleston Ward.
Sam Broughton says all councillors
commit to an oath to represent the
district, regardless of what ward they are
from. If this is true, then dismantle the
wards.
The two councillors to be elected at large
this year is a great start to this. If each
councillor, from wherever they come from
in Selwyn, is given a specific field of work/
interest then this should cover all bases.
-Margaret Holding, Rolleston
Stadium levy
We are always getting hit on all angles,
paying different taxes, let alone high
interest rates, etc. It’s great having this new
stadium. We have waited a long time for
this. Surely now with all the games we will
get and concerts, that will be considered
enough.
Double graduation celebration
for Crusader and scientist sister
• By John Lewis
STUDIOUS SIBLINGS: George Bell and sister Lucy celebrate
after a Crusaders match in Christchurch. The pair will be
graduating from Lincoln University on the same day.
TYPICALLY, BROTHERS and
sisters are the bane of each other’s
existence.
But Lucy Bell and her “big” little
brother George are so close, they
are graduating from Lincoln University
together next month.
George, 23, has been playing
for the Crusaders since 2022 and
made his All Blacks debut last
year. Despite the demands of
professional rugby, he’s also been
steadily chipping away at a commerce
degree part-time at Lincoln.
Meanwhile, 27-year-old Lucy
has been immersed in a PhD
focused on soil acidity in Central
Otago’s high country – not far
from the family’s sheep and beef
station in the Shag Valley.
Her research explores why soils
there are so acidic and aluminium-rich,
and which legumes grow
best in those conditions.
“Legumes are really important
for our hill country because they
provide a source of nitrogen,
which is often a key limiting nutrient.
It promotes grasslands.”
As children, George said he and
Lucy were typical siblings.
“When we were little, we definitely
had our fair share of conflicts,
but when we both moved
up to Christchurch, away from
our family to study, we kind-of
bonded.”
Last year, George realised he
was close to finishing his degree
and Lucy encouraged him to take
summer school papers so he could
graduate alongside her.
Lucy said she was so busy
encouraging George to finish in
time, she nearly lost sight of their
goal.
“For a second, it looked like
I wasn’t going to be able to
graduate in time with my thesis.
I thought, ‘Oh God, I’ve been
on George’s case; now I’m going
to be the one letting the team
down’.”
With each other’s support, they
got there in the end. But there
was another hurdle.
Being a commerce student,
George was supposed to graduate
in the morning ceremony on May
“I think as you get older, you
realise just how lucky you
are to have your siblings.”
– Lucy Bell
9. Lucy, as an agriculture and life
sciences student, was to graduate
in the afternoon.
So they made a bold ask –
could they graduate together?
To their surprise, Lincoln University
agreed and made a rare
exception to its long-standing
graduation schedule. The Bells
were “stoked”.
They are now looking forward
to crossing the stage together, in
front of proud friends and family.
After graduation, George plans
to keep studying alongside rugby,
aiming for a degree in property
valuation.
Lucy, meanwhile, is taking her
long-awaited OE to Europe before
returning home to find work
in the agriculture sector.
It will be her first extended
time away from George, she said.
“I think as you get older, you
realise just how lucky you are to
have your siblings.
“Possibly, you take them for
granted when you’re younger.”
Early the first
centurion for
Springston
• By Sam Coughlan
SPRINGSTON SECOND fiveeighth
Caleb Early has made club
history by becoming the first
player to chalk up 100 division 1
appearances.
Early, 27, reached the milestone
in Springston’s 22-38 loss away at
Oxford on Saturday.
“ It was pretty special,” Early
said.
“We had a presentation just
before the game. The date and the
game stitched onto the jersey, that
sort of thing.
“(But) I probably wasn’t nervous
for the game as such, it was just
another game of rugby really.”
Early lives on his family’s farm
near Chertsey and first joined
Springston while studying for a
Bachelor of Commerce (Agriculture)
at Lincoln University, following
his cousin Sam Lawn, who
was already playing at the club.
He started in Springston’s top
side in division 2 in 2016 and was
in the squad when they earned
promotion to division 1 in 2018.
Even after finishing his studies
and moving back home, he stayed
with Springston, rather than
rejoin Methven, the club he played
for as a junior and where his
brother Reuben and cousin Tim
Lawn still play.
Matches between Springston
and Methven are played for the
Lawn-Early Trophy, reflecting
both families’ contribution to
their clubs.
“ It is a big commitment, but I
think it’s worth it,” Early said.
“I couldn’t really imagine playing
for another team. I’ve spent
about 10 years at the club – you
meet some great people and
become pretty good mates with
some guys, (makes it) pretty hard
to leave.”
Early may soon have company
at the century mark.
First-five Cameron Powell sits
on 97 caps, captain and prop
Thomas Vedder has 95 and lock
Thomas Cockburn is on 97,
although he is has yet to play this
season due to injury.
“ We all joked between ourselves
about who was going to be first,
but it’s just the way things have
happened,” Early said.
He said potentially having
four players reach 100 caps this
year was exciting and a special
moment for the club.
LINCOLN AND West Melton
face tough combined country
ties after picking up their first
wins of the season last week.
West Melton triumphed 24-10
away at Woodend on Thursday
night, with prop Scott Hale
marking his 100th division
1 game. They will now host
Southern tomorrow night, who
are currently fourth in pool A.
HISTORY MAKER: Caleb Early is the first Springston player
to reach 100 division 1 matches for the club. Early’s fiancée
Juliette Lewis and son Fletcher were in the crowd for the
milestone.
“ It’s quite awesome to have a
group of four of us who have been
together from the start. We can all
celebrate together.
“To see where the club has come
from and how much it’s grown
in the time I’ve been here – we’ve
grown from two senior teams to
having about six now.”
Early represented Ellesmere in
2023, but said his focus has never
been on reaching higher honours.
“ It hasn’t been a massive part
of my rugby. It’s just a fun sort
Lincoln secured a 28-21 win
over Hurunui at home, marking
their first victory since June last
year against the same opponents.
They now face a challenging
Coleman Shield clash against
Southbridge, who narrowly lost
41-36 to Rakaia.
In other results, Waihora
extended their unbeaten run
in the combined country
competition with a 38-22 win
over Southern in Hinds, while
of thing for me now.
“Hanging around with good
people and having a laugh, that
sort of thing.”
Even at just 27, the idea of chasing
200 appearances isn’t something
he’s thinking about yet.
“I try not to think too far
ahead,” he said.
“As long as I keep enjoying it,
I’d like to keep racking up a few
more, I suppose.”
Springston next host Rakaia at
home on Saturday.
Win droughts broken, tough games ahead
Darfield suffered a 53-28 loss to
Glenmark-Cheviot. Prebbleton
also fell short, losing 29-24 to
Ashburton Celtic.
Darfield will be back in action
tomorrow night, away at Oxford.
On Saturday, Prebbleton will
host winless Methven, and
Springston will face Rakaia.
Waihora will travel to Ashley,
with both teams unbeaten at the
top of pool A after the first four
rounds.
PETS & PAWS
Budget-Friendly DIY Pet Toys
Pets bring joy but also come with a price tag
because of ongoing expenses like food, veterinary
care, toys, treats, and more. The good news is that
you don’t need to spend a fortune to keep your furry
friend happy. With a bit of creativity and ingenuity,
you can create homemade toys that are safe, fun,
and budget-friendly. Here are some cost-effective
ideas for making DIY pet toys using items you likely
already have at home.
Always supervise your pets while they play with
enrichment toys, and ensure that any glue, dye, or
paint you use is non-toxic for animals.
Cardboard Castle or Tunnel (For Cats or
Rabbits)
Reuse clean cardboard boxes and create a cosy
hideaway for your pet. Cut holes in the boxes, then
stack and glue them together to make tunnels or
towers. Get creative and let your imagination go
wild! Also, add their favourite blanket, bed, or
bedding for their perfect pet palace.
Tug Toy (Dogs)
Use old t-shirts or towels that don’t carry your
scent. You don’t want pets chewing on your good
clothing items, mistaking them for chew toys. Cut
the material into strips, braid them tightly, and tie
knots at both ends. This toy is machine-washable
and is perfect for interactive play.
Muffin Tin Puzzle (Dogs)
Pets enjoy food puzzles, and this activity offers
them enrichment as they figure out how to access
their food. Take a muffin tin and place treats or pet
biscuits in the bottom of each compartment. Then, cover
the food with tennis balls and watch your pet search for
the tasty treasures.
Sock Ball (Cats or Small Dogs)
Take an old, clean sock, stuff it with crumpled paper or
a bell, and tie it shut. Let your cat chase it, but remove it
and replace it if it frays.
Cardboard Roll Treat Puzzle (Any Small Pet)
Take a cardboard roll and fill it with treats. Fold both
ends over and cut small holes in the tube. You can secure
the ends with tape to make it more difficult for pets to
access the treats. This is a great enrichment toy for guinea
pigs, rats, cats, and small dogs.
Teaser Wand (Cats)
Cats love to chase wand toys, and you can easily make
one using a stick. Securely tie on some string and an
object that will entice your cat. Suitable objects include
a feather, a ribbon, a ball, or even a crumpled piece of
paper. Move the wand and watch your cat chase it.
Rabbit Toys
Rabbits love cardboard rolls! Stuff the tube with hay
or grass for them to pull out. You can hang an empty
roll from their hutch or doorway for them to push away.
For exercise and fun, hang vegetables with pegs or clips
around their area so they can stretch to reach them. You
can also dry a pinecone in the oven to remove bugs, and
once cool, let your rabbit chew on it.
Enrich your pets’ lives with fun and safe DIY toys and
activities for a more stimulating life that won’t cost you
the earth.
Running from April 26th to May 11th,
this event features a variety of activities,
The Street Sprints, held in Ashburton’s
plenty of attention. This year, drivers
Gareth Evans and Ryan Gallagher are two
to watch.
Gareth Evans has been involved
in motorsport for ten years, and this
marks his tenth year taking part in the
Ashburton Street Sprints. He recently
won the Christchurch Street Sprint,
as well as events in Greymouth and
Riverlands in Blenheim. Gareth began
his racing career in a road car and has
gradually built it up to enhance its
competitiveness while gaining experience
mainly through track racing. Gareth
advised his partner, Shama, competes in
jet sprinting with world success, running
in the best team you could be in, so he
has enjoyed being involved in that and
has learnt lots. He hopes the car will
try to get the best out of it.” Gareth also
states that it’s about enjoying the event,
and the social side of racing with ‘a bunch
of lovely people’.
Showing that age is no barrier, 14-yearold
Ryan Gallagher will be racing in
the Street Sprints for the second time
this year, bringing with him a wealth
of motorsport experience. He began
racing Grass Karts at the age of five and
has become a four-time NZ Champion.
For the past three years, Ryan has also
competed in the Junior Rotax 125 in
sealed karting across South Island
tracks and is the current South Island
Champion, having finished 5th in the
NZ Schools Championship. Expanding
his racing experience, Ryan took part in
South Island Speedway races this season,
driving a Quarter Midget, finishing 3rd in
the NZ Championships.
Ryan drives a Mazda RX8 that he
purchased as a road car three to four
years ago and has been building it up
to compete in the New Zealand Pro 8
series this coming season. Last year, he
placed first Junior to win the South Island
title in the Street Sprints in the RX8.
With his success and evident passion
for motorsport, it’s no surprise that his
future goals would be to follow in Shane
Van Gisbergen’s footsteps and race a V8
Supercar and a Sprint Car at Speedway.
Plenty of thrilling events are planned
for Ashburton’s GDC WheelsWeek+,
showcasing various vehicles and
activities.
Keeping your EV in top shape
Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained popularity in New
Zealand, and it’s easy to understand why. They are costeffective
to operate and require less maintenance compared
to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. However,
EVs still need regular servicing and care like any vehicle to
perform at their best and run efficiently.
One significant benefit of electric vehicles is their reduced
maintenance. No combustion engine means no need for oil
changes, spark plugs, or timing belts. However, there are
still a few key things every owner should be aware of.
Your battery is the heart of your EV, and with the
significant cost of replacing it, you should learn how to
prolong its life. Keep your battery healthy and extend its
lifespan by avoiding charging to 100% every day. Instead,
try to keep the battery’s charge level between 20% and
80%. It’s also a good idea to charge your EV regularly,
especially during off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper.
However, avoid overcharging, as this can be harmful to the
battery. Extreme temperatures can also affect your battery
performance. If possible, park in the shade during hot
days and keep your car garaged in winter to avoid freezing
temperatures.
With the added weight of batteries, EVs are heavier,
which can cause added wear on your tyres. Ensure you keep
tyres inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended
pressure levels. Regularly rotate your tyres and get wheel
alignment checks to prevent uneven wear.
Many electric vehicles use regenerative braking, and
brake pads will last longer. However, have them checked
annually, replace them if worn, and maintain the brake
fluid level.
Other maintenance checks include checking for
manufacturer software updates for improved performance,
checking wiper blades, topping up washer fluid, checking
coolant levels and replacing your cabin air filter.
With fewer parts to maintain, less frequent servicing, and
minimal effort, your EV can deliver years of efficient and
reliable driving and stay in top shape.
Autumn work that will pay off in spring
Now’s the time to lay
the groundwork for a
thriving garden next
season. Here’s your guide
to productive autumn
gardening
Vegetables
Think ahead to next spring and
improve the quality of heavy, claybased
soil by digging it roughly,
so different levels are exposed to
winter frosts, winds, rain and sun.
Raw manure can be added also
and will break down over winter.
Any potatoes still in the garden
should be lifted and stored.
April is the traditional month
to sow broad beans. These ultratough
vegetables will germinate
at very low temperatures and
although they may make little
growth over winter, will grow
strongly in spring to produce better
crops.
Some gardeners also sow peas
at this time, with favoured variety
Onward, which has a long maturity
period (97 days). The dwarf
variety, Novella, needs no staking
and matures in 63-77 days.
Cabbage and cauliflower plants
can be set in soil that has been
April is the traditional month
to sow broad beans.
well-manured or generously
composted to stand the winter and
mature in spring. For planting out
in spring, sow cabbage and lettuce
seeds in glass-covered boxes or
cloches. Choose a rich soil and a
sunny position.
Now is the time to prepare
rhubarb for a good crop next
spring. Rhubarb is a gross feeder,
so heavy manuring or composting
is required every year. Remove all
dying stems and leaves, pull out
weeds and pile manure or compost
on the crowns.
Asparagus tops should be
removed before the berry-like red
seeds ripen or the beds will be
clogged with seedlings. Cut stems
to ground level, remove all weeds
and apply seaweed-based fertiliser
before leaving the beds clean and
tidy for winter.
Flowers
Favourite pansies and violas can
be grown from cuttings for spring
plants. Place cuttings in gritty soil,
sheltered from the sun and wind.
This is the last chance before
winter to plant Ranunculus claws
and Anemone corms. Anemone
blanda is excellent for growing in
drifts under deciduous trees.
Continue planting lilies. Rough
sand or light gravel will improve
drainage at the roots, while leaf
mould, being slightly acidic, will
help neutralise any traces of lime
in the soil.
Antirrhinums, wallflowers,
calendulas and marguerite daisies
that have finished flowering can
be cut back hard. In milder districts,
these plants may produce
a winter display, following the
last of the chrysanthemums and
dahlias.
Fruit
Walnuts will be ripening, so
cut any grass around the trees to
make nut collection easier. When
they start falling, shake branches
vigorously with a long pole to
dislodge as many as possible. Nuts
will discolour if left in rain and
dew for too long.
Pansies and violas can be grown from cuttings for spring
plants.
PHOTOS: GETTY
Fruit trees can be encouraged
to grow more fruiting spurs and
less leafy top by root pruning now,
when the leaves have begun to
change colour but the soil is still
warm enough to encourage new
root growth.
Young apples, pears and stone
fruits are best lifted out of the
ground completely. Cut back
taproots close to the stem, shorten
other strong roots and firmly
replant the tree, staking to keep
them from being blown over.
For larger trees, the method is
more labour-intensive. Dig a semicircular
trench about 1m from
the trunk. Dig to a depth of 1m
or more, severing all the stronggrowing
roots that can be reached.
Continue the digging inwards,
from the bottom of the trench,
to intercept any roots growing
downwards. This is where the
worst-offending taproots are usually
found. Replace subsoil, then
topsoil, ramming firm light soils
but leaving heavier types to settle.
If the tree is still too vigorous
next summer, repeat the
technique with the remaining
half-circumference the following
autumn. But do not dig right
around a tree in one go, as with all
its main anchors severed, the tree
may be blown over.
YOUR LOCAL
INSIDE
Issue 16 - autumn 2025
Kia ora
Selwyn has experienced extraordinary growth
in both our economy and population over the
past 20 years and our council has invested
heavily in the essential infrastructure of water,
wastewater and roading with over 80% of our
capital spend in those areas. However, I notice
and hear from you about the significant gaps
in central government investment in essential
services for our community. New research
now estimates that last year alone there
was as shortfall of $369 million in central
government spending in Selwyn. The report
estimates there has been a deficit of $2.6
billion in central government funded social and
physical infrastructure by central government
over the past 10 years in education, health,
police, transport and housing.
As Selwyn continues to outstrip growth
projections, this deficit needs immediate
attention. Our track record of sustained
population and economic growth has
contributed hundreds of millions of new tax
and GST to the government. We now need
them to respond and support our commuity’s
needs. I have written to ministers
and urge central government to
recognise our contribution to
Aotearoa and the investment
they need to make to ensure our
ongoing success.
Opening of ReUse Shop
Selwyn’s latest step in waste management is the opening of the ReUse Shop at the
Pines Resource Recovery Park, near Rolleston. This shop will help save thousands
of items from the landfill, offering everything from furniture and whiteware, to roller
skates and musical instruments. We’ve seen a tremendous response from the
community and it’s heartening to see how committed we are to giving pre-loved
items a second chance rather than contributing to waste.
The shop itself is a model of sustainability, with a high-performance building
design that includes natural lighting, solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and a mix
of new and second-hand materials. Not only is this a win for the environment,
but it also creates an opportunity for the community to access quality items at
affordable prices. Revenue from sales will go towards supporting other local
recycling initiatives.
This initiative is part of our larger ReConnect project, which is leading the
way in New Zealand’s waste minimisation and sustainability efforts. The shop
is open 9am-4.30pm Wednesday-Sunday at the Pines Resource Recovery
Park,183 Burnham School Road. Go along a check it out!
City2Surf success
It was great to join the CORDE sponsored
City2Surf event recently, and I’m proud to
have represented our district alongside Cr
Sophie, Cr Nicole, and Cr Shane as well as
others from the Council team. From runners to
walkers, supporters, and volunteers, the whole
event was a fantastic example of energy and
community spirit.
CORDE is a Council -owned company that
continues to deliver exceptional infrastructure
projects across Selwyn and returns a dividend
that subsidise our rates. It plays a crucial role in
supporting our growing communities, and I’m
proud of their ongoing achievements. A huge
thank you to everyone involved in making the
City2Surf such a success.
Bridge Hill fire update
It was inspiring to visit Castle Hill and see
the passion and dedication of farmers,
conservationists, and government agencies
all working together to heal the land after the
devastating Bridge Hill fire last December. The
Craigieburn area is a treasured landscape,
and it’s heartening to see how the community
is coming together to restore it.
The fire affected approximately 980 hectares
of land, destroyed native flora and fauna, but
it’s also sparked a united effort to bring this
precious land back to life.
Local farmers, with their deep connection
to the land, are working alongside the
Department of Conservation and others to
carefully plan and restore the ecosystems
damaged by the fire. The work ahead will be
challenging, but the vision is being set and
the first steps taken towards the restoration
of this special landscape. The project is
focused on ensuring that future generations
will continue to enjoy this iconic environment.
We are fortunate to have such passionate
community leaders stepping forward in the
face of adversity.
Citizenship ceremonies
Citizenship ceremonies are a very special
occasion and often the culmination of years
of effort.
Over 400 people from 93 different
nationalities have officially become Kiwis,
in Selwyn, this year, marking a significant
milestone in their lives and their connection
to our community. Held at different locations
across the district, these events are a
celebration as friends, family, and supporters
gather to mark this important milestone.
Some of the words from new citizens
include, “We are proud and really happy to
be citizens of New Zealand. With wonderful
people around and many opportunities, we
now have the privilege to make our dreams
come true.” Another new citizen said, “I felt
an overwhelming sense of accomplishment
when I received my New Zealand
citizenship. This country’s commitment to
multiculturalism and its welcoming attitude
make it a truly special place to call home.”
These ceremonies highlight the strength
of Selwyn’s diversity and the deep
connections we have with one another.
I’m proud of the inclusiveness that makes
our district thrive.
School visits for
future planning
This month, I’ve had the privilege of visiting several schools
across Selwyn, including Lemonwood Grove, Darfield High,
Springfield, Hororata, Leeston and Glentunnel. These visits
have highlighted the incredible diversity of our district’s
educational facilities and the dedication of our educators.
It’s also been an opportunity to hear firsthand from students
and staff about the challenges they’re facing and the
opportunities ahead.
One of the major discussions focused on Minister of
Education, Erica Stanford’s promise to unveil a Selwyn
specific education plan. This is something that has the
potential to significantly shape the way we approach
education in our district. Our schools are feeling the
pressures of growing expectations on staff and the need
to fund for future capacity. I’m looking forward to seeing
how the plan will address these issues.
Other key topics raised during these visits included school
buses, parking at peak times, and curriculum changes.
I am grateful to the local councillors who have joined me on
these visits, and I’m eager to continue engaging with our
schools as we work together to ensure our students have the
best possible opportunities for success.
Lincoln University welcomes
record numbers
It was an honour to be part of the mihi
whakatau that welcomed over 5,500
students to Lincoln University this academic
year. With the highest number of students
ever, the university continues to be a thriving
hub of learning, attracting talent from all over
New Zealand and around the world. Every
year, it’s exciting to see the potential these
students bring to our district, and I wish
them all the best as they embark on this new
chapter of their educational journey.
Lincoln University is also a critical partner in
shaping Selwyn’s future. Our Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) with the university
underscores the strong collaboration
between our two organisations. Lincoln
University is a world-class research
institution, and its work puts Selwyn on the
international map, particularly when it comes
to research in the primary industries sector.
I had the privilege of attending a dinner with
leading scientists from the Euroleague of Life
Sciences, which included representatives
from 13 European universities. This event
highlighted the global importance of the
research coming out of Lincoln. It’s clear that
our partnership with the university is helping
to position Selwyn as a leader in sustainable
agriculture and innovation.
In addition to this, I’ve had ongoing
conversations with Lincoln and Canterbury
University leadership regarding the
government’s plan to amalgamate four
Crown Research Institutes into a single
Bioeconomy Public Research Organisation.
news in brief
Recognition for Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn
I’m pleased to share that Selwyn District Council has received significant national recognition
for our innovative Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn work, winning three major awards at the
New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI) Conference held in Invercargill.
Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn was awarded:
• Best Practice in Strategic or Non-Statutory Planning
• Best Practice in Digital Planning
• And notably, the Nancy Northcroft Supreme Award, which recognises the very best in
planning practice across Aotearoa New Zealand.
This is a huge endorsement of the ambition and quality of the work our strategy team has
led. The project was recognised for its innovative and future-focused approach to long-term
spatial planning. Special recognition goes to Ben Baird, George Sariak, and Ryan Mayes,
who received the awards on behalf of the Council. Their work has positioned Selwyn at the
forefront of spatial planning in New Zealand.
This achievement not only reflects our strategic leadership but also our commitment to
engaging our community in meaningful conversations about the future of Selwyn. It’s a proud
moment for our district, and a strong signal that we are leading the way when it comes to
innovative, place-based planning.
Selwyn nominated as best movie location by Screen International Production
The Selwyn District has been nominated as one of five finalists in the Screen International
2025 Global Production Awards. The stunning Selwyn scenery provided the backdrop to
several major productions, and will be competing against Maraya in Saudi Arabia, the Moab
Desert in Utah, Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna and Ravenscourt Park Hospital in London.
The awards celebrate outstanding and sustainable work in the world of film and TV
production, locations and studios and the winners will be announced at the Cannes Film
Festival on May 19.
Our breathtaking and diverse landscapes have provided the perfect backdrop for recent
productions, including Bookworm and Went Up the Hill.
A happy healthy home
More than ever, we now require our
homes to be a sanctuary - a primate haven
where the cares and pressures of the world
do not intrude. The home should be an
enveloping, warm and creative environment
where family members of all ages feel
relaxed and safe.
The longer you live in your home, the
more likely you are to feel in sync with it.
As the seasons come and go you’ll have
got to know which rooms are sunny and
which ones need brightening.
You’ll have noted areas prone to damp.
You’ll have observed where different family
members like to spend their time and why.
You might have come to the conclusion
that major changes are required to make
your home as healthy as possible, or perhaps
you’ve concluded that a few simple tweaks
will do the trick. Either way, good planning
is essential, so take your time, write lots of
lists and do your research thoroughly.
MATERIALS
The ‘make-do-and-mend’ culture
that has grown during the recession
places emphasis on the satisfaction that
can be found in incorporating natural
materials with vintage items. Pieces of
driftwood, collections of shells, that lovely
moss-covered garden bench or a ‘cleverly’
revived piece of furniture all have their place
in the healthy home and its surroundings.
This trend steers away from plastics and
synthetic materials.
HEATING AND VENTILATION
A home needs to be cool in summer,
with plenty of natural ventilation, and
warm in winter. Traditional open fires are
being phased out and home owners are
discovering the joys of installing modern
wood burners, using gas for heating or
installing a heat pump. All these options are
healthy - technology has come a long way
and most choices will see you saving money
in the long run.
STORAGE
While a minimalist style might be fine for
single people or couples without kids, when
the patter of tiny feet comes along, good
storage is going to be vital at every stage of
a child’s life - be they babies or teens - they
come with clutter. The more you can contain
that clutter the better in terms of both your
mental health and general safety.
There are any number of options available,
from professionally designed cupboards
and wardrobes, to the simple lidded plastic
boxes you can buy at chain stores. While
some people claim they thrive in a messy
environment. I know from experience that a
lovely, orderly home is good for the soul.
COLOUR
Choosing the
right colours
for your home
can make a big
difference. Small,
dark rooms
can be opened
up and made
brighter simply
by choosing the
right paint. If
you can afford an
interior designer
or colour
consultant to
help, I do advise
it. Today’s
homes tend to
be more open
plan, so choose a palette of two or three
basic colours and use them throughout to
achieve cohesion and harmony.
Building blocks
to a new home
When building a new home, here’s a reminder
to pay attention to some of the fine details...
Anyone intending to build a new home
should have the builder’s contract checked
out by an experienced lawyer.
A payment schedule can also minimise
financial risks. Issues that you may have to
deal with include:
the deposit, guarantees and warranties
If you want to compare building
companies, it’s important to get down
to finer details such as how many power
points there are per room, the type of
windows you are having or which paint
finishes are included.
Questions to ask builders include:
• Do you have a
completion guarantee
and how does it work?
• Is there a loss of
deposit guarantee?
• Is the company a
Registered Master
Builder and does
it use third-party
written guarantees?
• What is the schedule
for payments?
• How are the deposit
and progress
payments
administered?
• Are they held in a solicitor’s trust fund?
• Will the master franchisor complete
the build if the franchisee goes out of
business
• What are the exact specs?
• Are the prices fixed?
• What is excluded from the build?
• Are there any restrictions on
driveways or any other connections?
• Can you speak with clients who have
just completed a build?
Do your homework before you decide on a
building company and you will have a less
stressful time once the building process
starts.
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Retro-glazing:
Keeping the warmth in
Keeping the heat in, whatever your heat source, matters
when trying to keep your home warm. Did you know you
can lose 30-50% of heat through your windows? Perhaps
you don’t have the budget to replace your windows, so
retro-glazing may be a cost-effective way to improve
energy efficiency, comfort, and your home’s value. Here
are some reasons to consider retro-glazing:
Improved warmth and comfort
Double glazing is proven to reduce heat loss through
your windows. This means winters won’t feel as cold
as there will be fewer draughts and a more consistent
indoor temperature.
Less disruption than replacing windows
Retrofitting uses your existing frames (timber or
aluminium) if they are in good condition. This makes it
more cost-effective than entirely replacing windows, and
it can be completed in one to two days.
Reduced condensation
Nobody likes those dripping windows; double glazing
helps maintain a drier, healthier home. Leaving this
moisture on windows can lead to mould and mildew.
19
Double glazing minimises heat loss by creating a thermal
barrier between the inside and outside of the window. It
keeps the inner pane of glass warmer than it would be
with single glazing, reducing condensation.
Saving money
With better insulation, the warmth from your heat
source will be more effective, which will mean lower
power bills.
Noise reduction
Living close to neighbours can mean that the sound
can carry easily. Retrofitting creates a noticeable sound
barrier, making your surroundings quieter and more
peaceful.
Adds value to your home
Not only will you increase your home’s value, but
you will also enhance the appeal to potential buyers
with retro-fitted double glazing. Buyers are keen to buy
properties that are energy efficient and low-maintenance.
With these advantages in mind, retro-glazing is a smart
investment to improve your home’s comfort while being
mindful of budget and sustainability.
