Common errors and symptoms:
How do you know if you need a replacement?
The oil filter, the oil filter case and the oil cooler are essential if the
engine is to work properly. If one of these components is defective,
this can result in a number of symptoms that need to be identified in
good time to avoid you incurring annoying and expensive costs to
repair secondary failures. Here are the most common signs of
a defect:
Oil filter, oil filter case and oil

Engine oil is crucial for engine performance
– it provides the necessary lubrication,
helps with cooling and protects against
wear. However, it needs the right support
from the oil filter and oil cooler to do its job
reliably. The high-quality oil filter module

The engine oil temperature is rising
If the oil cooler is no longer working properly, the engine oil may overheat. An increase in
oil temperature is a clear warning sign. Excessively high engine oil temperatures can
impair oiliness and put the engine under great stress. If your vehicle’s temperature display
is giving you frequently high readings, the oil cooler may be damaged and will need to be
examined.
Sludge in the engine oil (cooling water/oil mixture)
Another clear sign of a problem in the oil circuit is when sludge begins to form in the
engine oil. This happens when the cooling water mixes with the oil, which often points to a
leak in the oil cooler. The water-oil mixture has a milky consistency and is a clear indication
of a possible leak in the oil cooler.
Leaks in the engine block (cooling water or engine oil)
Leaks in the engine block, whether cooling water or engine oil leaks, may indicate a problem
with the oil cooler or the oil filter case. Cracks in the housing can lead to leaks, especially
in older vehicles. A damp spot under the vehicle or on the engine parts may indicate
that you have a leak.
Engine noise and power loss
A worn oil filter or oil cooler can lead to insufficient lubrication and cooling, the result of
which can be loud engine noises and a noticeable loss of power. If the oil filter is clogged
and the oil can no longer circulate effectively, the engine can suffer from poor lubrication,
which significantly shortens the service life of the engine.

OIL FILTER CASE–
more than just a fixing point
The oil filter case combines the various
components of the oil filter module to form
a single functional unit.
It serves as a central fixing point for the oil
filter and – depending on the system –
the oil cooler, too. It also ensures that oil
flows efficiently to the individual
components and protects the filter from
external influences.

OIL FILTER –
Clean oil, healthy engine
The oil filter is a key component in ensuring
service life and engine efficiency. Its main
task is to remove impurities such as dirt,
metal particles or residues from the engine
oil. It protects sensitive components such
as pistons and bearings from excessive
wear and ensures consistently high engine
performance.
A modern oil filter consists of several
components:
• A filter unit: This removes the smallest
dirt particles from the oil
• A reflux valve: This prevents the filter
from running empty when the engine is
switched off and ensures that the oil can
circulate rapidly when the engine next
starts up
• A pressure relief valve: This protects the
engine by maintaining the oil flow when
the filter is clogged.
OIL COOLER –
Temperature control for optimum
performance
The oil cooler has an equally important role
to play: It regulates the temperature of the
engine oil by dissipating excess heat. This
ensures that the oil is stable and can fulfil
its lubricating function.
There are two main types of oil cooler:
• Air-cooled oil cooler: These cool the oil
by circulating air. They are robust and
easy to maintain
• Water-cooled oil cooler: These make use
of the engine’s cooling water circuit and
ensure particularly efficient cooling.

A SMART SOLUTION
FOR THE DQ250

REPLACEMENT
The 6-speed Direct-Shift Gearbox or DSG ® (02E, DQ250) from VW is an electronically controlled
dual-clutch gearbox that is regarded as one of the most significant technical innovations in
recent years. It combines the comfort of an automatic transmission with the efficiency and
dynamics of a manual gearbox. It is no wonder therefore that more than 50 per cent of the
Group’s newly registered vehicles are now fitted with dual-clutch transmissions.
In addition to the mandatory maintenance
work required by the vehicle manufacturer,
which includes oil and filter changes every
5 years or after 60,000 km, there are also
some weaknesses that often force vehicles
with this transmission into the workshop.
One of these problems involves leaks and oil
loss at the lower part of the transmission oil
sump, which can be caused by a defective
rubber seal or by corrosion on the sump
itself. In some cases, the oil sump even
rusts through.

Defective mechatronics units represent
another problem that can lead to
considerable shifting issues and even total
failure of the transmission and make towing
the vehicle to the workshop unavoidable.
In this case, the vehicle manufacturer only
offers to replace the entire mechatronics
unit, which results in considerable costs for
the vehicle owner. However, it is often only
the control board that needs replacing.

operating elements of the engine
management system and the crankcase
ventilation valves with their entire periphery.
It prevents lubricating oil from escaping into
the environment and protects the engine

It is essential that you adhere to the manufacturer’s
specifications, such as the specified
torques or tightening sequences, during
installation to ensure that the cover fits
tightly and securely. Otherwise, you may put
stress on the plastic, the cylinder head cover
mounts may crack and the spare part will
wear out much faster than if it were fitted
professionally.
The higher the mileage, the more inevitable
the signs of wear. Seals start to leak and
have to be replaced and valves for
crankcase ventilation gradually become
clogged. As a result, oil leaks out, the engine
runs unevenly and the engine light will come
on to signal a problem. You will eventually
do some serious damage to your engine if
you ignore these signs.
OUR VAICO EXPERT TIP
• The adjustment mechanism is pre-assembled using an adjusting
screw (4 mm Imbus). This is the only way to ensure a tension-free fit
and optimum sealing.
• Then use the two screws to fasten the adjustment mechanism.
The torques specified by the manufacturer must be adhered to!
• Fix the holder with the corresponding fastening screw.
You only ensure that the seal has been fitted securely if you adhere to the
torques specified by the manufacturer and the prescribed tightening sequence
for the screws.

How a NOx sensor works.
A NOx sensor measures the concentration of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO₂) in the
exhaust gas in order to optimise exhaust gas treatment. It is made up of a zirconium
dioxide measuring cell, a pump electrode and control electronics. The exhaust gas
flows into the measuring cell, where an electrochemical reaction breaks down the
NOx molecules into oxygen and nitrogen. The resulting current is proportional to the
NOx concentration. The sensor electronics transmit the values to the engine control
unit to reduce emissions.

The causes of NOx sensor malfunctions
NOx sensors work under extreme conditions – day after day, kilometre after kilometre.
It’s no wonder they sometimes reach their limits. But why do they fail at all? The most
common causes of failure are:
Thermal load
The high temperatures in the exhaust gas flow can push even robust sensors to their limits.
The materials age more rapidly – and the sensitive electronics eventually fail.
Residues in the exhaust gas flow
Soot, oil or other residues build up on the sensor over time and impair measurement
precision. The worse the combustion, the higher the load on the sensor.
Moisture and mechanical damage
Water or condensation can damage the sensitive electronics. Added to this are vibrations
and shocks, which can lead to cracks or fractures if they are installed incorrectly or
subjected to extreme conditions.
How do I tell if a NOx sensor is defective?
A defective NOx sensor rarely goes unnoticed
– the vehicle draws attention to it in a
variety of ways.

offers extended warranties to support affected customers. At the same time, VEMO offers a sustainable

The car manufacturer Stellantis has introduced
extended warranties for vehicles
with Euro 6 diesel engines and SCR
technology. This affects Peugeot, Citroën,
DS Automobiles and Opel/Vauxhall models
from the production period January 2014 to
August 2020 with a mileage of less than
210,000 kilometres. Stellantis covers up to
100 percent of the replacement part costs
and labour costs of 30 euros per vehicle in
the event of AdBlue ® problems, depending on
age and mileage. Customers who have
already had repairs carried out can apply
for an additional payment via a digital
compensation platform. This offer is valid
until August 2028.
An extended warranty was also agreed for
Stellantis’ PureTech engines. Vehicles with
1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrol engines that
have been found to consume excessive
amounts of oil or have oil problems are now
covered by an extended warranty of up to
10 years or 175,000 kilometres. Measures to
improve customer satisfaction and goodwill
schemes are planned as part of Stellantis’
efforts to strengthen trust in the brand and
provide customers with rapid support in the
event of technical problems.

AdBlue ® problems
The problem of defective AdBlue ® systems
not only affects Stellantis customers.

solution for anyone facing similar technical

Regardless of whether it is a newer system
with a plug-in pump or an older system with

VAICO EMISSION KITS FOR
FEWER POLLUTANTS

PERFORMANCE
VAICO emission kits, consisting of an oil separator, a bleed valve, seals and hoses.
They are important components of the crankcase ventilation system in modern car
engines.
Their task is to minimise pollutant emissions
during the combustion process inside the
engine and therefore significantly reduce air
pollution and emissions. Vapours laden with
impurities such as oil droplets, soot and fuel
residues, known as blow-by gases, are no
longer released into the environment
unpurified, but are fed back into the
combustion process.
The improved air supply also optimises
combustion, resulting in higher engine
efficiency and a significantly improved
exhaust gas composition – meaning that
the engine can breathe freely.
These crankcase ventilation factors are
essential for clean and efficient engine
performance.
To prevent this from happening in the
first place, VAICO experts recommend

Hugo Schwarze
In addition to his commitments in formula racing, Schwarze is also
getting more involved in GT racing. He will be driving the 911 GT3 as a
race taxi in the DTM for his sponsor VAICO as he did in 2024, but this
year the focus will be on exclusive drives with customers. This project
emphasises his versatility and openness to new challenges.
Hugo Schwarze’s career to date demonstrates that he is an
up-and-coming talent in international motorsport. His ability to adapt
quickly to different racing series and vehicle types bodes well for

Full throttle into the 2025 season: The talented
racing driver Dennis Fetzer and the
VAICO brand are joining forces with immediate
effect. The partnership marks an important
step for both sides and underpins

motorsport. Fetzer, who is
competing for HRT Ford Performance
in the new Ford Mustang
GT3 this year, was able to gain his
first valuable experience at the
season opener of the ADAC
Nürburgring Endurance Series
(NLS).
A successful début in the Ford
Mustang GT3
The 23-year-old proved his skills
on the legendary Nürburgring-Dichloroethane
during the first race of the season from 21 to
22 March. Together with his teammates Dirk
Müller, Jusuf Owega and David Schumacher,
Fetzer came in at a respectable
twelfth place in the strong field of
participants. Despite weather-related
challenges and a strategic tyre choice
on wet-weather tyres, the team was able to
collect valuable data to further develop
the car.
