Ostiense
The Ultimate Guide to Ostiense
Neighborhood in Rome
Once a florid industrial area, Ostiense
has fully grown into its status as one of
Rome’s most hipster neighborhoods and
sought-after Saturday night destination
for young Romans.
Do not confuse Ostiense with Ostia,
Rome’s port. Although Ostiense is
named after the Ancient Roman road
(Via Ostiensis) connecting Rome with
the harbor, Ostiense is just south of the
city center, confining with Testaccio on
one side and EUR on the other.
Thanks to a metro stop and university
campuses, Ostiense’s popularity
has grown exponentially in the past
decades. Owning its industrial origins
and look, with colorful and eco-friendly
street art, frequent festivals, night clubs,
and international eateries, Ostiense is
the Brooklyn to Trastevere’s Manhattan.
A 2020 article from The Guardian names
Ostiense as #8 in a list of the coolest
neighborhoods in Europe. Ostiense
certainly stands apart from most Roman
districts, adorned as it is by 1800 and
1900 architecture as opposed to ancient
or baroque buildings. The abandoned
gasometer that’s visible from most
rooftops in Rome, now a reclaimed
space for art and nightfile, has become
Ostiense’s very symbol, a reminder that
new life can bloom anywhere.

Did you know there’s a restaurant in Rome that
allows you to choose your own ingredients?
With the incredible “farm-to-table” or “counterto-table”
concept, Terra lets its guests choose
the highest quality ingredients directly from its
counters. Afterwards, all ingredients are cooked on
a 100% Italian natural charcoal grill that gives off
exceptional aromas and flavors.
This former warehouse turned Restaurant/Dining
Hall has something for everyone. Each room is
almost a different concept with menus to match.
There’s the Banco (bar seating with a limited
menu), the Salotto (large ‘living room’ great for big
groups), their “Cortile (courtyard), the Pizzeria and
the Trattoria, where you can find all of those classic
Roman dishes. They also serve breakfast, aperitivo
and street food.
While not your typical super-classic Roman
restaurant, Trattoria Pennestri is definitely the place
to go for an incredible contemporary Roman dining
experience. A cozy locale where you can taste
delicious Roman dishes with a twist. Try the pasta e
fagioli to be pleasantly surprised. And to accompany
your meal, browse through their wine list offering
more than 60 Italian wines.
A meat lover’s paradise, La Chiancheria is perfect
whether you’re craving burgers or steak. You
choose your cut, then face the real challenge:
picking from their tempting sandwich combos.
They also serve Neapolitan classics like montanara
and genovese. With meat sourced from their own
sustainable farms, and a great wine and beer list,
it’s a must for quality carnivores.

Started by four friends passionate about beer,
Hopside began as a craft beer bar but quickly
gained fame for its amazing burgers. Today, it’s

gluten-free) and even the option to brew your own.
The menu features great burgers, noodles and wok
dishes (veggie, meat, or fish). No pizza or cocktails
here. Aperitivo runs from 6–8pm, and dinner
reservations are highly recommended.
Opened in 2014 by animal lover Valentina de
Matteis, Romeow Cat Bistrot redefines vegan dining
in Rome. Instead of imitating traditional dishes, it
offers creative, gourmet plant-based cuisine that
changes how you see raw and vegan food. It’s also
a peaceful home for rescued cats, where guests
can relax, sip vegan wine or fresh juices, and even
enjoy a coloring book while dining.
HummusTown is a non-profit eatery using Syrian
cuisine to foster cultural exchange and employ
refugees. It’s a casual spot for delicious, affordable
Middle Eastern dishes, with a menu that’s inclusive
of all diets. Hummus is the star, but there’s
much more to explore. Supporting them means
supporting a social mission—they also host events
and help those in need.
California Cookhouse is the perfect fast-casual
spot for a quick, quality bite without settling for fast
food. With locations in Pigneto, Mazzini, and Monte
Sacro, it serves a California-inspired menu of tacos,
burgers, burritos, bowls, and classic sides like fries,
nuggets, and onion rings. It combines the speed of
fast food with the quality of an Italian kitchen.

The range of work in the city is ever

STREET ART IN ROME
STREET ART IN ROME
SAN LORENZO
Recognized as one of Rome’s art districts, San Lorenzo is home to students and street art;
from Via dei Volsci to Via degli Enotri and a collective wall through Via degli Ausoni, there
is much to be seen. Embrace the spirit of basketball on Via Dello Scalo with Francesco
Persichella (PIVSK)’s pop-art style depiction of a basketball player leaping victoriously towards
an invisible goal. The piece sits atop a basketball court that was in disuse until Persichella and
the Red Bull Half Court teamed up to restore its spirit.
San Lorenzo is also home to a block-long mural by international artist Alice Pasquini. Her
expansive mural depicts children playing and evokes feelings of nostalgia and innocence in a
style reminiscent of comic art.
Between Via dei Reti and Via dei Piceni, Lucamaleonte’s Patrimonio Indigeno remembers the
bombings of San Lorenzo during WWII. The piece is a collection of mementos which include
poppies, in memorial of those who fell in the war, a laurel and snake, symbolizing Goddess
Minerva and Sapienza University which was Rome’s first university, and the hand of Goddess
Ceres.
San Lorenzo is also home to works by Leonardo Crudi (don’t miss his beautiful ground
murales in Piazza dell’Immacolata), Christian Guémy, SOLO, Unga, as well as other Italian and
international artists. The playful nature of San Lorenzo has made it into a fertile ground for
Roman artists to constantly use its walls as their ever-changing canvas.
PIGNETO
Pigneto, once a predominantly industrial
area, is a mecca of street art. Street
artists whose work can be found
here are: Hogre, Hopnn, Alt Novesette
aka Alt97, Uno, and #cancelletto#.
Pigneto is sometimes referred to
as the “home of stencil” because
of its famous painting of a couple
in a tender embrace by Sten & Lex
who are considered the pioneers of
stencil graffiti due to their discovery of
half-shade technique. They have been
creating work using this method since
2000 in the streets of Rome, London,
Paris, Barcelona, and New York.
There are a lot of works linked to
literature and cinema, such as artist
Maupal’s black-and-white depiction of
Pier Paolo Pasolini’s piercing gaze on
Via Fanfulla da Lodi. Between Pigneto
and Tor Pignattara, you can find the
tallest street mural in Rome, towering
above the neighborhood and 32 meters.
Coffee Break by artist Etam Cru depicts

Street art in Ostiense has been legalized and therefore the walls of this zone are covered by
astonishing pieces not to be missed. It holds more than thirty large pieces of street art and
has successfully embedded itself as part of Rome’s cultural heritage. It is home to Europe’s
largest ecomural, Hunting Pollution by Federico Massa (known as Iena Cruz). A blue cormorant
bird holds a fish in its mouth, stretching from the base to the top of its seven-story home. The
piece was created with sustainable paints capable of capturing atmospheric pollutant dust and
neutralizing them into less harmful salts. Nature-inspired imagery continues on the face of
the Pescheria Ostiense, with Agostino Iacurci’s Swimmer floating ironically above the door of
this large seafood market. Next, you can gaze up at artist Blu’s prominent mural which wraps
around Alexis Social Center, a former military warehouse which has been occupied since
2004. 27 brightly colored faces tell a different story of injustice and inequality, and the project
was funded entirely by the 450 residents of the building.
Be sure to look out for Roa’s immense Jumping Wolf on Via Galvani. This large creature
stretches from bottom to top of an orange building, baring its teeth at those who pass by. In
Ostiense you can also see works by Blu, Sten & Lex, Ozmo, C215, JB Rock, Kid Acne, Gaia,
Borondo, Hitnes, and Lucamaleonte, among others.
Lucamaleonte, Il Marchese del Grillo
Diamond & Solo, Oh my darling Clementine
GARBATELLA/SAN PAOLO
For many, Garbatella is considered to be the true heart of Rome. A working-class
neighborhood, Garbatella is home to many pieces of street art that have appeared in recent
years. One of these pieces is the portrait of Italian actor Alberto Sordi as he appeared in
“Marchese del Grillo.” This piece, by Lucamaleonte, is located on Via Persico and is not to
be missed. Next, you can see Oh My Darling Clementine, an Art Nouveau-style piece born
through the collaboration between artists Diamond and Solo, located in Piazza Sauli. In the
San Paolo area, you can find graffiti by artists Greg Jager, Leonardo Crudi, and Elia Novecento.

QUADRARO
This working class neighborhood has
attracted visitors in recent years thanks
to MURO (muromuseum.blogspot.com), a
free open-air street art museum. You can
start your walking tour on Via dei Lentuli to
see David “Diavù” Vecchiato’s vibrant and
eccentric Art Pollinates Quadraro. Continue
walking to spot Lucamaleonte’s Nido di
Vespe. This piece memorializes the nickname
given to Quadraro by Nazis due to the
neighborhood’s opposition to fascism and the
German blitz of 1944. One of the few works
by a female artist, Gio Pistone, is painted
over the entrance of a tunnel in this district.
A monster guards the entrance, separating
Quadraro from the adjoining district. The
tunnel’s exit was painted by Mr.Thoms,
and depicts a gigantic mouth sucking in
everything around it.
There is a larger corner wall depicting a
female figure by Jim Avignon, Berlin and
New York based street artist. At the end
of the tour, you can make your way to the
most famous piece in MURO; Ron English’s
Temper Tot/Baby Hulk. The Hulk-like child
and gas-masked Mickey Mouse provoke
conversation about the corrupting influence
of American pop culture in today’s world. If
you are interested in learning more, a guided
tour is available in English for 10 euros with
MURO.

TOR MARANCIA
Another up-and-coming neighborhood for street art is Tor Marancia, a popular neighborhood
home to the working class and the last to be transformed in 2015 by 20 international artists
from 10 countries. 22 murals were created over the course of 70 days, thanks to a project
formed by 999Contemporary. The murals are 14 meters in length with a surface area of 155
square meters each. Diamond, Mr. Kleva and Moneyless, Seth and Philip Baudelocque, and
Jaz are some of the street artists who participated in this venture. Surreal animals, giant
monsters, faces, and superheroes line the streets in a riot of colors, each telling their own
story. These pieces have transformed the walls of Tor Marancia’s public housing to yet another
open air museum, creating an exhibition accessible to all.

ROME IN BLOOM: THE ROSE GARDEN RETURNS
Just a short walk from the Colosseum and above the Circus Maximus, you can find an
exquisite rose garden with over 1,100 different species of roses, with a spectacular view
overlooking the ruins of the Palatine Hill and the city of Rome.
And the garden isn’t just beautiful, it’s also one of the most prestigious collections in the
world, which retraces the history and evolution of the rose from the ancient Romans to today.
There are roses from New Zealand, Europe, the Americas, and South Africa, just to name
a few. Some are 40 million years old, and among them are some of the most curious and
unique species in the world—like the Rosa Chinensis Viridiflora, with its green petals; the
Rosa Chinensis Mutabilis, which changes color over several days; and the Rosa Foetida, a
rose known for its strong, unpleasant scent.
Rome in Bloom: The Rose Garden Returns
The Garden was first set up in the year 1931 according to the wish of the nobleman
Francesco Boncompagni Ludovisi, on top of a former Jewish cemetery. To commemorate the
former site the garden still bears the two tables of the laws of Moses at its entrance and was
given the shape of a menorah with its seven arms.
The garden is split into three sections, showcasing ancient, botanical and modern roses. It
is both centrally located yet also a tranquil, romantic spot to escape the chaos of the city.
Definitely worth a visit for lovers of roses, lovers of a great panorama or just lovers in general!
The rose garden is open free of charge from April 21st on the occasion of Rome’s birthday
until mid-June each year.

Il Marchese unites the best of two worlds: a bar with
elegant French salon accents and pompous chandeliers,
and a restaurant with the coziness of a Roman trattoria.
But it’s not just the décor that’s impressive. When you
walk into Il Marchese you step inside Europe’s first Amaro
bar with more than 500 different Amaro labels.
During the recent G20 in Rome, Il Marchese had two
special customers: the American First Lady Jill Biden
and the French Première Dame Brigitte Macron. The two
ladies said they were “delighted with the lovely welcome”,
complimenting the staff and the quality of the products.
ll Marchese takes its name from the Marchese del Grillo,
a symbol of Rome’s inimitable spirit– a true gentleman,
but always inclined to irony, a lover of tradition, but also
appreciated by those who come from different cultures.
Here, with Chef Daniele Roppo, you’re sure to have a
fantastic dining experience. The culinary philosophy has strong Roman roots and is inspired
by traditional recipes that are lightened according to a contemporary taste, also offering
vegetarian dishes. Quality is always a priority. Ingredients are purchased from local producers.
The amaro and cocktail bar at Il Marchese pays tribute to the elegance of 19th-century
French aristocracy, with precious stuccoes, wallpapers, and velvets. The cocktails here are
perfect for an after-dinner drink or as an aperitif. Each signature drink is crafted with premium
ingredients expertly mixed. Leading the cocktail bar is Fabrizio Valeriani, a bartender with
extensive experience.

Since then, Unique al Palatino Garden Restaurant has

We especially love their seafood offerings. As a starter,
we tried and adored their tuna tartare with chives and mango. For the first course, their
delicate tagliolini with tomatoes, zucchini, and shrimp is a must-try. And as a second course,
who could resist their frittura: delicious fried prawns and shrimp, still incredibly delicate. There
are also tasty options for vegetarians. And remember to leave some room for a delicious
tiramisu, or for a millefoglie with chantilly cream!
The superb wine list and the excellent service will also contribute to an incredible experience.

Traces of Michelangelo Merisi can be found
throughout Rome – from the unforgettable
works displayed at San Luigi dei Francesi to
the masterpieces of Basilica of St. Augustine
and Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. These
churches have long been mandatory stops
for art lovers visiting the Eternal City, drawing
people from across the globe.
Now, in addition to those artworks, until July
6, visitors will have a unique chance to admire
as many as twenty-four of the most iconic
artworks of Caravaggio, all united in one place
at Palazzo Barberini.
This groundbreaking exhibition gathers
paintings from prestigious national and
international collections, offering an
unparalleled glimpse into the artistic and
personal evolution of one of history’s most
celebrated painters. Thanks to extraordinary
loans from world-renowned museums, the
Galleria Barberini Corsini will host one of the
most significant exhibitions ever dedicated to
Caravaggio, tracing his life and intense artistic
journey from 1595 until his mysterious death
in Porto Ercole in 1610.
The exhibition presents Palazzo Barberini’s
CARAVAGGIO, THE MAESTRO OF LIGHT, AT THE BARBERINI PALACE
permanent Caravaggio collection alongside
other exceptional paintings coming from
private and public museums across the world,
including Texas, Madrid, London, Florence,
Naples, Detroit, New York, Dublin.
The show is arranged into four different
sections where lights and darkness alternate
to create dynamic and tension between the
characters and to convene intensity to the
colours. While walking along the rooms, it
is clear how the relationship between the
artist and its commissioners influenced
Caravaggio’s themes: from genre paintings
reminding of a popular scenes to religious
subjects, from mythology to portraits of
influential members of the Roman life.
Whether you are a devoted art historian or
simply fascinated by Caravaggio’s genius, this
is an unmissable experience for everyone. The
path is easy to access, paintings are arranged
in a chronological order so that this show
gives the opportunity to understand the vision
and progression of one of the most valued
painters of all time.

DONATELLO HALL REOPENS AT FLORENCE’S BARGELLO MUSEUM
FLORENCE
Reopened to the public in a renewed and accessible
form, the temple of 15th-century Italian sculpture
returns to its full splendor
After nearly a year of meticulous restoration and curatorial redesign, the Donatello Hall at the
Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence reopens to the public, reaffirming its place as one of
the world’s most significant spaces for Renaissance sculpture.
Known as the “temple of 15th-century Italian sculpture,” the newly refurbished hall features
65 masterpieces, including nine celebrated works by Donatello himself. Among them are the
marble and bronze versions of David, Saint George, the Marzocco, Attis, the Dancing Putto, The
Crucifixion, Bearded Man’s Head, and the Madonna of Via Pietrapiana. The space also includes
works co-attributed to Donatello’s workshop, such as the Saint John the Baptist Martelli, created
with Desiderio da Settignano.
Donatello Hall Reopens
at Florence’s Bargello Museum
Surrounding these icons are contributions from Donatello’s contemporaries and collaborators,
including Brunelleschi and Ghiberti’s panels from the 1401 Baptistery door competition, glazed
terracottas by Luca della Robbia, and sculptures by Michelozzo, Bertoldo di Giovanni, and others
who shaped the visual language of the early Florentine Renaissance.

DONATELLO HALL REOPENS AT FLORENCE’S BARGELLO MUSEUM
A Modern Display for Timeless Art
Led by Director General of Museums Massimo Osanna
and curator Ilaria Ciseri, the restoration prioritizes
accessibility, narrative clarity, and safety. New seismicresistant
platforms support the central sculptures,
while updated lighting and wall colors enhance the
atmosphere and visibility of the works.
Interactive didactic tools, including QR-coded multimedia
descriptions in text and audio (available in both Italian
and English), offer inclusive ways to engage with the
collection. From May onward, Braille guides will also be
available for visually impaired visitors.
Notable updates include the repositioning of the
two David sculptures—with the bronze version now
taking center stage—and the relocation of Attis and
Verrocchio’s David to allow for better comparative
viewing. Some artworks have been transferred to their
original contexts, including Desiderio’s Martelli Coat of
Arms to Casa Martelli and Michelozzo’s Sibyls to the
Orsanmichele Museum.

A Storied Space Reborn
The Donatello Hall is the most monumental room of the
Bargello, originally built in 1255 as the Palace’s Audience
Hall. It was here that Dante Alighieri was sentenced to
exile in 1302. Transformed into a prison in the late 16th
century, it wasn’t until 1865 that the space became part
of Italy’s first national museum.
The 2025 reopening not only restores the physical
space but also deepens the visitor’s journey into the
roots of Renaissance sculpture. As the Bargello Museum
enters a new chapter—now united with the Galleria
dell’Accademia—the Donatello Hall stands as both a
historical beacon and a modern model for museum
excellence.
