BY RELUCTANT GENIUS

This past Super Bowl, millions of people were introduced to someone

who they probably never heard of before. Whether you liked the

performance or not, there is no doubt that the man on this month’s

cover has made himself into one of the top music influencers in the

last 10 years.

Here’s the history behind musical genius's Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar, born on June 17, 1987, in Compton, California, is

widely regarded as one of the most influential artists in contemporary hip-hop. His journey to success began

in his teenage years when he began rapping under the name K.Dot. In 2004, he released his first mixtape,

"Youngest Head Nigga in Charge," which garnered local attention. However, it was his 2011 album,

"Section.80," that marked the beginning of his ascendancy, showcasing his lyrical prowess and unique

storytelling ability, touching on topics such as systemic racism and personal struggles.

Lamar's breakthrough came with his second studio album, "good

kid, m.A.A.d city," released in 2012. The album was both a

commercial success and a critical darling, narrating his

experiences growing up in Compton. It earned him several

Grammy nominations, solidifying his status as a leading voice in

hip-hop. His subsequent albums, "To Pimp a Butterfly" (2015)

and "DAMN." (2017), further elevated his artistic reputation. "To

Pimp a Butterfly" was celebrated for its exploration of African

American culture and identity, while "DAMN." showcased his

versatility and introspective

lyricism.

By 2025, Kendrick Lamar had cemented his legacy with a remarkable five

Grammy wins at the annual awards ceremony, including Album of the Year for

"DAMN." and Best Rap Album for "To Pimp a Butterfly." These accolades reflect

his profound impact on the music industry and his ability to bridge gaps

between hip-hop, jazz, and spoken word. Beyond his musical achievements,

Lamar's work often addresses social issues, making him a voice for a

generation. His rise to fame is not just a testament to his talent but also to his

commitment to authenticity, artistry, and advocacy, ensuring his place in the

pantheon of music legends.

I seriously considered going into the Catholic priesthood when I was a boy; especially as I made my Confirmation,

when I was 12. My religious mentor, Father DeCarolis promised to buy me a brand new Cadillac when I graduated

seminary school. I know what you're thinking, DON'T! Father DeCarolis was a good man, a fine, decent man, who

wanted the best for me. I gave that offer due consideration, but ultimately decided the Church was not for me. I love

God, but I love girls too. So, I decided to major in mathematics, my aptitude. Little did I know, at the time, how

political the Catholic Church is. Or, for that matter, how political all professions are in America. I retired from The

Hartford at 52 because the politics was debilitating. Then I followed my Muse, teaching film appreciation. After

pitching a gig to host the Silver Screen Classics in a small Cinemark about a mile from our house in Wolcott CT at the

time. I pitched the same gig, Classic Host at a huge Cinemark in Manchester CT, the second highest volume Cinemark

in the USA with 100,000 ticket sales a month. The cinema employed over a hundred people, mostly high school &

college students. The exceptions: Much of the 150-capacity bar/restaurant staff; one middle-aged man who only

worked the podium; management; and me! And I had no desire to go into management. “FINALLY, a job where I don't

have to be involved in their stupid, counter-productive politics!”, I thought. I worked the

podium and hosted their Classic movie at 2:00 & 7:00 on Sundays & Wednesdays. Our

GM, Scott, was a really cool, gargantuan of a guy that had a gig as a championship

wrestler before moving to cinema management. There were two Asst GMs: a late-20s,

by-the-book jerk who insisted on being called either Mr. L. or by “Mr.” and his surname,

whose behind-his-back nickname was Lincolnlogger; and sweet, middle-aged Kathy.

Lincolnlogger hated my unauthorized program; Kathy loved it. She even co-hosted The

Holy Grail with me. When Scott took ill for a few months, the Regional GM pitted Kathy

& Lincolnlogger against one another for the temporary GM position, and Deputy GM

upon Scott's return. Lincolnlogger immediately went after my program, moving the postfilm

discussion to a conference room, which ended it, and said that the lack of attendance

proved the audience didn't want me to host. They just wanted to watch the film, so after

a two week assessment, he canceled my hosting gig. Well, little did he know, I was never

paid for all the prep work I did for the program, and I was a W-2 employee of Cinemark.

He forced my hand and I called HR. I settled out of court for $5,000 and a pink slip;

Lincolnlogger was banished to a much smaller, much less attended Cinemark in Enfield

CT that soon after closed!; the Temp GM and subsequent Deputy GM job went to Kathy;

and the progressive policies of Scott's administration continued. He welcomed me back to

watch films there whenever I showed up, often admission free. Be careful of your politics! Coups can backfire.

As Edward Berger's “Conclave” opens, the Pope (Bruno Novelli) dies, and the Dean of the Cardinals, Cardinal

Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) must lead the Conclave of all the Cardinals to select a new Pope. Shortly after all the

Cardinals arrive, one more, previously unknown Cardinal Benitez of Kabul (Carlos Diehz), Afghanistan, shows up.

He's vetted and it's determined that he was recently made Cardinal “in pectore”, or in secret, by the Pope shortly

before his demise. The main candidates for the papacy are: Cardinal Bellini (Stanley Tucci), an American who will

keep moving the Pope's liberal agenda forward, including his intention to begin to open the priesthood to women;

Canadian Cardinal Tremblay (John Lithgow), who, at worst, would slow down some of the Pope's planned changes;

Nigerian Cardinal Adeyemi (Lucian Msamati), a conservative who would hinder the progress the Pope has made; and

Cardinal Tedesco of Italy (Sergio Castellitto). If selected, Tedesco would turn the clock back on all that the Pope has

accomplished in his term. The voting, the lobbying, the in-fighting, the unholiness of it all...is righteously disturbing!

Ingrid Bergman's daughter, Isabella Rossellini rounds out the main cast as the Sister Agnes, the Vatican's head

housekeeper & chef. It was nominated for 8 Oscars this year, including Best Picture, Actor (Fiennes), Supporting

Actress (Rossellini), and won for Peter Straughn's Adapted Screenplay, an honor I do not support because of the

ending, the ending has been called a twist...an M. Night Shyamalan or O. Henry ending. It is not! It's not supported

by enough clues to be characterized as “a twist”. It's a surprise! And, as a result, 3 Stars! Worth seeing but overrated.

Grille, both of which, along w/ Cinematique of Daytona Beach, donate Raffle Prizes.

Blair

I’ve loved fashion for as long as I can remember! When I was little, I would hand-sew

outfits for my Barbies, and as I got older, I started picking out my own wardrobe,

especially for pageants. That love for fashion led me to the runway, where I was named

National Super Model, which was such an exciting moment! Working with Premiere

has been an amazing experience, and I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had in

modeling. Besides fashion, music is a huge part of my life! I love classic rock and

country pop, and of course, I’m obsessed with musicals!
