My family recently returned

from a multi-day spring

break escape. And while I

wish I could say it was all

sunshine and rainbows—

though we did see both—let’s be real:

there were more meltdowns than I care

to count, our mornings started slightly

before sunrise (i.e., way too early), and we

struggled to navigate both big-city streets

and nap times. But amid the chaos came

some pinch-me moments of pure bliss:

shared laughter, unplanned adventures,

and memories that made every scream

and scraped knee worth it.

Of course, as a working mom, reality

came rushing back the minute we

returned home: laundry piles taller than

my toddler, looming deadlines, empty

cupboards…the list went on (and on).

But I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Balancing a career and raising kids may be two of life’s greatest challenges, but they’re

also my greatest privileges. I’m endlessly grateful for a job I love and the opportunity

to parent two happy, healthy, hilarious daughters who need—and adore—me

unconditionally.

If you, too, are a mother (yes, fur babies and helpless husbands count!), a woman in the

Speaking of food, there’s one dinner (besides cheese pizza and chicken nuggets) that

my kiddos will never say no to: tacos. Say the word (or cue the song “Raining Tacos”) and

My favorite thing about tacos? You can eat them one-handed. And as any mom

I started last year as the social media

manager.

Strategically curating engaging content for

Instagram and Facebook, creating visually

appealing graphics, and researching/writing to

make captivating captions. I actively engage

with followers and analyze performance

metrics across our platforms to optimize

results. It’s enjoyable and rewarding!

BEST/FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?

Getting to flex my creative muscles and see

how things engage people in real time.

OUTSIDE OF WORK?

My kids are my best friends; we love hanging

out and going on scooter rides together. I also

enjoy going to local wineries and eateries and

the occasional Pilates or yoga class.

inspiration to pursue theatre acting from

elementary school through my senior year of

high school.

I just got back from Disneyland and am hoping

to plan a trip to Hawaii next year.

vibrant, modern eatery dedicated to serving

a unique fusion of Japanese and Hawaiian

scheduled to open next month in Folsom’s

Erin Levinson, the 2025 El Dorado

County Poetry Out Loud Champion

and a sophomore at El Dorado High

School, won first place in California’s

statewide poetry-writing competition,

Poetry Ourselves. Her winning poem,

“Metaphors,” earned her $100; read the

piece on California Poetry Out Loud’s

website (capoetryoutloud.org/ourselves).

The City of Folsom received a $3.7

million federal grant for critical bridge

repairs at eight locations, including

Folsom Lake Crossing Bridge and

Lake Natoma Crossing Bridge.

Funded through the Infrastructure

Investment and Jobs Act, the project

will enhance safety and longevity

while minimizing local costs. Design

begins in 2026; construction in 2027.

two beautiful Samoyed

dogs, content creator and

podcast host Amanda Bouldin

seems to have found a career

that perfectly complements her

vibrant family life. However, for

Bouldin—who currently has over

1.6 million followers on TikTok

and champions kindness and

female empowerment—her online

presence has a deeper purpose,

one rooted in personal tragedy. “I

don't want anyone to ever feel alone.

That's my greatest fear,” she shares.

Tell us about what you do.

First and foremost, I’m a mom and

that’s the most important job to me.

But I’m also a content creator; my

handle is @afterhourswithamanda

(After Hours with Amanda), and I host

a podcast, too, which is my favorite!

What sort of content do

you create?

I try to show the real behind the

real of life, such as mental health

and mom life; the seasonality as

well as the realistic view of it:

some days you get dressed, some

days you don’t. I work with lots

of brands, too, and always make

sure their values align with mine,

because, the only thing that I

truly have at the end of the day,

if online blew up tomorrow, is

my authenticity, my honor, and

my integrity. And you cannot

purchase that back ever. I have a

manager who helps me with all

the legal jargon of contracts, but

I’m not really into all the strategy

behind influencing. People follow

my account because they’re

trusting me, and I take that trust

so seriously, which is why I tend

to be pickier.

You talk a lot about mental

health in your content and

in your podcast. Where does

that stem from?

My mother dealt with addiction

and mental health issues and in

2019, my brother died. He had

dealt with different struggles

throughout his life and his body

had taken the hits on that. I want

to highlight the mental health

journey of real life and never want

How did you start your

online career?

I was a manager for a company, and

they decided to move out of California.

I was offered a position elsewhere

but decided not to take it. During the

pandemic, a girlfriend messaged me

saying, ‘You should start a finsta and tell

all your mom stories.’

What’s a finsta?

Finsta means ‘fun insta’

or ‘fake insta.’ It’s a social

media account for fun—

your friends don’t know

about it so you can post

things freely without

judgement.

a 30-day sweatpants

challenge—yup, I wore

Williams made a speech about female

empowerment and women supporting

women. As a mom of three daughters, I

was like, ‘I'm here for this.’ But that week,

we had been at a park, and there was an

incident with another little girl who was

saying things to my five-year-old that a

five-year-old shouldn’t be saying. I still

remember the video [I made]: I kicked in

the bathroom door and thought, ‘If we’re

going support women, we need to start

with our own kids. I’m all about women

and female empowerment, but the fact

that we're still attacking each other is

insane to me, and the fact that it's starting

at five—get it together, ladies! Come on!’

Thinking nothing of it, I closed the app.

And then my neighbor texted me and

said her niece loved it. I logged on and

saw the video was at 100,000 views; in 48

hours, it had over a million.

What does a typical day look

like for you?

I’m up at 5 a.m. taking care of

the girls (cooking up a batch of

pancakes on Mondays to make the

week easier). We commute an hour

to school, and I do drop off and

pick up. When I’m back home, I’m

filming. I can do anywhere from

three to seven videos a day, chatting

to the camera as if I’m on FaceTime.

It sounds like a lot, but when you’re

just propping up your phone, it’s

simple. I run into people and the

number one thing they say is, ‘You’re

just like you are online!’ and I say,

‘What were you expecting?!’ Usually

on Mondays and Wednesdays I

record a podcast, which I love. I

talk about mental health and other

[physical] health issues; it’s very

much about real life. At the end

of the day, my goal is to come on

and share what’s going on in my

life so that when someone logs on

who doesn’t have anyone or leads

a solitary life, they can [relate and

realize that] we're in this together.

Spotlight on

Judith Monroe

Many artists are inspired by

nature, but collectors have

described Judith Monroe’s

artwork more intimately as

“conversations with nature.” Monroe says

she appreciates that description.

“I certainly talk a lot to nature when

I’m out tromping around. So often,

I’m saying, ‘Wow, you are so cool, you

should come home with me!’” she says

with a laugh. “I find so many things

interesting and captivating, to the point

that I take them home to photograph and

incorporate into artworks.”

Monroe has her artistic roots in

traditional photography, and teaches

photography part-time at Sierra College.

While she now calls herself a mixedmedia

artist, most of her pieces start

with a photograph—followed by a unique

transfer technique.

“I use acrylic mat gel medium to

literally pull an ink jet photo print out of

the paper it was printed on,” she explains.

“It has to be soaked in water to peel the

paper off and more mat gel used to apply

it onto my substrate, which usually has

collage layers already on it. I also apply

layers of color with pencils, transparent

acrylic paints, wax pastels, and almost

always a small organic component like a

dried leaf.”

Monroe plays with different ideas

in art journals and is in the process of

creating an online course in mixedmedia

journaling to share this approach

with others. Those interested in the

Whereas some artists paint broad

landscapes, you typically hone in on

smaller elements of nature—an insect,

a snail’s shell, or a single bird feather.

What draws you into these things?

I’m captivated by the design, the intricacy

of little specimens. Georgia O’Keeffe

once said something to the effect that

nobody really stops to look at a flower,

so she made them so big you couldn’t

ignore them. I guess I’m doing something

similar, just not always making them

super large, but certainly I want people to

notice all the beauty that surrounds them

all the time.

What do the layers in your mixedmedia

pieces represent?

At first it was about memories and

experiences, and then I began to realize

that I was putting so much more in there

as well. I believe we live in a world that

is fully spiritual as well as physical, that

there is a whole dimension we’re often

not aware of, and I realized that was

coming through in my work, too.

How has your style evolved?

Once upon a time, I was a more

traditional photographer, though even

then I was hand-coloring black and white

darkroom prints. I began adding visual

layers with photograms [photographic

images made without a camera] in the

darkroom. Then, as I found myself

attracted to mixed media, I decided to

start using darkroom prints as collage

on canvas, as well as Polaroid transfers.

It was the loss of my favorite film that

finally pushed me into the digital era.

use now, I was hooked. I love how the images are transparent, so

you can often see what is underneath it. This is how the idea of

memories and spirituality are represented, because it’s all there,

but it can be hidden and hard to see.

Are you experimenting with anything new?

Oh, I’m always playing with something new! I’ve been working

with assemblage [a sculptural technique using found objects

and other materials] off and on for a few years now. I’m working

on an assemblage piece that will be part of the Outside the

Box: Reimagined art auction fundraiser on May 14 to benefit the

Placer Artists Tour. I’ve also been working with cyanotyping [a

photographic technique that involves laying an object on paper

coated with a solution before exposing it to UV light].

You describe your art as an extension of your spiritual life.

Please elaborate.

My spiritual life is completely intertwined with everything I do.

I follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and believe in the Bible;

often my work is directly inspired by scripture.

I even paint live onstage during church services

sometimes. And there can be Christian and

personal symbols in my artworks.

What do you hope viewers experience

through your art?

The same sense of peace and joy that I get out

in nature. There is a healing aspect to all art and

nature, and I want viewers to come away with

a sense of hope, healing, and appreciation for

nature. Recently, I’ve come to realize that I see

nature as our true home; as humans, we rely

on the ecosystem for our existence, so I hope

that people begin to feel that deep connection

through my artwork as well.

How did you sleep? Were you wide

awake, staring at the moon, or

sleeping like a baby? Sleep—whether

you get enough of it or not—can be

the deciding factor in having a good

day or not, don’t you think? But

beyond that, it plays a crucial role in

your overall health. It’s meant to be a

source of deep rest and rejuvenation,

but when you miss out, can quickly

turn into a source of stress.

Before you doze off, we know

you’re aware of the basic rules of

good sleep: not consuming caffeine

late in the day, turning off screens

earlier in the evening, and having a

consistent routine. We went a step

further, however, asking medical

professionals and sleep experts to tell

us all about the lesser-known factors

in achieving a good night’s sleep.

FIND YOUR RHYTHM

“One common mistake I see is

neglecting circadian rhythm

alignment—many people focus on

sleep hygiene at night but overlook

the importance of getting morning

light exposure to set their internal

clock,” says Pamela Connor,

functional medical nutritionist

and owner of Connor Wellness

Clinic (connorwellnessclinic.com).

An individual’s circadian rhythm

manages their internal body clock

with external factors such as light

and dark, and one of its biggest

purposes is sleep. If you can, try

to go outside when you wake up

and let your body receive the

natural light from the sun (even

if it’s cloudy, it works!). Your body

then knows to wake up and several

physiological changes will take

effect. This can also be helpful

when it comes to jet lag, as you

reset your body clock for a new

location.

A IS FOR APNEA

If you wake in the night gasping for

air or feel drowsy during the day,

then you could have sleep apnea.

“Sleep apnea can be obstructive

sleep apnea (OSA), which means

your airway collapses and cuts off

oxygen to your body and organs;

or central sleep apnea (CSA), which

means your brain fails to send

signals to breathing-related muscles.

It can also be mixed/complex sleep

apnea, meaning it’s both obstructive

and central sleep apnea,” explains

Helen Glaizer, sleep care coordinator

at Norcal Snore and Sleep Solutions

(norcalsleepsolutions.com).

Though this may sound worrying,

it’s treatable, and you don’t even need

to leave the comfort of your own

bed to have a sleep study performed.

Treatment could be something as

simple as pillow arrangement, a

CPAP machine, or a bespoke, noninvasive

oral sleep device. Your sleep

is tested before and after treatment

to assess efficacy. This is certainly a route

worth exploring, as sleep apnea can have

serious consequences.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SLEEP TRACKERS

Sleep trackers can be a great source of

information on how we’re sleeping; though,

amongst our experts, there were some

differing opinions. Ingrid Grove, DO, of Thrive

Primary Care (thriveprimarycare.net) loves

her Oura Ring for its gentle encouragement

throughout the day if she’s had a bad night’s

sleep; it reminds her to rest and take it easy.

Connor advises caution, however: “…

while they’re great for awareness, they can

also cause ‘orthosomnia,’ where people

stress about their sleep data, ironically

making their sleep worse.” On this topic,

Grove agrees. “People can become obsessed

with sleep and anxious about bedtime—the

bed is no longer a place of rest.”

If you’re lying in bed awake, “don’t

catastrophize and avoid dramatic ‘Will I ever

sleep again?’ type questions,” Grove says.

“Talk kindly to yourself and remember that

you’ve probably worked through other days

with little sleep and survived!”

SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS

“The bedroom is for sleeping and intimacy.

There shouldn’t be any electronics, such

as computers, tablets, phones, and TVs.

The goal is to eliminate unhealthy

distractions in the bedroom.” So, leave

the TV downstairs and charge everything

outside of the bedroom, too.

Unhealthy foods and drinks should

be ruled out too close to bedtime as well,

including alcohol. In fact, Nurre says, “Eating

anything within a couple hours before bed

can lead to indigestion and spiked sugar

levels, [ultimately delaying] sleep.”

And if you’re a woman reading this, it’s

worth remembering perimenopause, Grove

says. “Hormonal fluctuations can lead to

poor sleep,” and perimenopause can start

in your mid-30s, so it might be wise to have

your hormone levels checked.

There are things you can control with

regards to your sleep and things you

can’t. But as Sirisha Krishnamurthy, DDS,

at Renaissance Family and Cosmetic

Dentistry (folsomfamilydentisry.com) and

NorCal Snore and Sleep Solutions, says:

“You spend a third of your life sleeping,

which determines the quality of how

you’ll spend the other two-thirds of it, so

make your rest count!”

6.3 miles out and back.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL:

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

The parking lot ($10 day-use fee) is

small and fills up fast, so aim to get an

early start. The trail has some rocky

sections that can be challenging to

navigate—downloading a map ahead

of time is a smart move. With minimal

shade along the route, sun protection is

a must, as are layers and sturdy shoes

with good traction. If the 1,200 feet of

elevation isn’t enough, you can always

tackle Pyramid Peak, the highest point in

Desolation Wilderness. Standing just shy

of 10,000 feet, rest assured the view

is worth the effort. As always, leave no

trace (pack out what you pack in).

WHY WE LOVE IT:

Surrounded by glaciated granite cliffs,

alpine lakes, and the opportunity for

a mid-hike cold plunge (don’t forget

your swimsuit!), it’s no wonder this

area is one of my favorites. The vast

openness of Desolation Wilderness

never fails to satisfy the soul's craving

for an alfresco adventure.

My name is Jennifer Tommasini, the owner/director of The

Gift of Kids Daycare and Preschool. I’ve lived in El Dorado

Hills for 19 years and I have four children.

My journey into the childcare field began in 1999 when I was

left disappointed in my search for ”the right” childcare for my

son. After going through many programs and with my daughter

on the way (now working with Gift of Kids), I began to reflect

upon my family’s needs. It was then that I changed my career

focus and ventured into childcare. My mission is to provide a

nurturing, loving, safe and educational environment for every

child.

In September 2000, I opened my home to three newborns,

two 2-year-olds and a 3-year-old. I immediately knew that

this was my calling. Everything felt so natural. I went back to

school full time for early childhood education and started my

own preschool program that incorporated home-cooked meals,

planned outings, and practiced an advanced curriculum with

structured activities that fostered learning.

In 2007 I opened a small pre-school with 60 families while

continuing my in-home daycare. In 2010 I expanded again,

bringing my preschool and in home-daycare under one roof-

The Gift of Kids and Preschool is now located off Labrobe

Road in Business Park 1. It has been a dream to serve so many

children and give families the satisfaction I never felt when my

son was in daycare. I pride myself on offering a safe place for

families to bring their children.

The Gift of Kids currently has 35 wonderful, loving,

professional teachers and over 200 children. We provide care

for infants, preschoolers and private kindergarten. Although

the size seems large, the classrooms have a homey feel where

the teachers truly care about each child’s development. We

work together on communicating with parents and developing

each child’s individual needs. It delights me that so many

children have the opportunity to experience our program.

I am proud that we are working with many local colleges, we

have partnered with quality courts and this year added an

apprentice program for new teachers in the field!

Claudia Cummings and a River District Plan for Folsom

The City of Folsom is home to more than six miles of frontage on the American River

and Lake Natoma. According to a recent City of Folsom Newsletter, our waterfront

areas are poorly identified with limited access. Among her many other civic activities

and contributions, Claudia Cummings responded to this problem and worked

to organize a community group known as the Folsom River District Organizing

Committee in early 2018. Under Claudia’s leadership as Chair, the Committee began

work to develop a vision for the appropriate enhancement of the City’s riverfront areas

for current and future residents. Later that year, the City Council approved an updated

General Plan which included language regarding development of a River District

Master Plan and the Organizing Committee conducted a visioning effort resulting

in a Community Outreach Report discussing options for a plan going forward. Since

then, the Committee has continued its effort to support a River District Master Plan

and the City has begun the process of developing that plan for a waterfront that is

widely recognized as an underutilized amenity for City residents and tourists alike.

Claudia continues to remain involved in this important effort and a final Master Plan

is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Claudia sponsors the Folsom Lake Symphony's Young at Heart Senior Program.

Her donation expands the symphony's outreach in assisted living communities to

the harmonious integration of music and life-enrichment activities. This listening

and enhanced learning experience features quartets, in-residence art displays, and

intergenerational engagement with student ambassadors, building the leaders of

tomorrow. In addition, Claudia also sponsors Folsom Lake Symphony's annual

concert in the Folsom Historic District and Hearts 4 Heroes.

little strategy, and a few

pro-approved tricks up

your sleeve, you can work

smarter—not harder—to

refresh your home.

We asked local experts for their top

tips, hacks, and go-to products that

streamline the process and help

you avoid common pitfalls. From

tackling high-traffic areas with ease to

decluttering without getting stuck in

nostalgia, these insights will help you

create an efficient plan, stay motivated,

and maintain that satisfying sparkle

long after the cleaning’s done.

Whether you’re ready to tackle

every nook and cranny or just want to

make your home feel a little lighter and

brighter, read on for the smartest ways

to spring clean your space—without

breaking a sweat.

Michelle Ritchie, owner of

Bright & Sparkly Cleaning Service

(brightnsparklycleaningservice.com),

says the biggest spring-cleaning mistake

people make is diving in without a

plan. “Jumping in randomly leads to

frustration and unfinished tasks,” she

says. Instead, she recommends a top-tobottom,

back-to-front system—focusing

on one room at a time and starting with

decluttering before any deep scrubbing

begins. “Cleaning around clutter only

makes the job harder,” she adds. Ritchie

also suggests setting realistic goals,

using a checklist, and breaking cleaning

into short, focused sessions. Keeping

tools and products handy—like in a

caddie or an apron—can make a big

difference, too. Her go-to hacks include

steam-cleaning the microwave with

lemon water, soaking showerheads in

vinegar, and never leaving wet surfaces

behind in bathrooms to prevent mold.

When it comes to products, Ritchie

swears by Red Juice from Speed

Cleaning (a non-toxic, all-purpose

cleaner) and Bio-Clean for tough shower

buildup (paired with 0000 steel wool

for a scratch-free finish). She urges

homeowners not to overlook areas like

baseboards, light switches, door frames,

and under appliances for dust magnets

that can affect air quality. To maintain

cleanliness post-spring cleaning,

she recommends creating simple

daily habits, using smart storage, and

following a “one-in, one-out” rule when

bringing new items into the home. And

her number one piece of advice? “Don’t

aim for perfection—aim for progress,”

she says. For those truly short on time,

she adds, hiring a professional can be

the best way to reclaim your weekend

and focus on what matters most.

Sharleen Schuiling, owner

of Om Sweet Om Cleaning

(omsweetomcleaning.com),

recommends you, “start by

prioritizing your spaces, gathering

supplies, and creating a checklist—

especially if you’re involving the

whole family.” . Her approach includes

starting from the back of the house

and working forward and always

cleaning from top to bottom and

left to right to avoid repeating tasks.

Schuiling also stresses the importance

of cleaning often-overlooked areas

like ceiling fan blades, vent covers,

washing machines, and the sides of

appliances. “Even your dishwasher

and washing machine need love—run

a cycle with vinegar and baking soda

to keep them fresh,” she adds.

When it comes to tools and

time-saving tricks, Schuiling swears

by a steamer, which helps loosen

grime and sanitize without harsh

chemicals—especially useful in

bathrooms and on tile. She also

recommends pre-spraying problem

areas and letting cleaners sit while

you work elsewhere. Her go-to holy

grail products include Dr. Bronner’s

Sal Suds Biodegradable Cleaner,

Basics, and enzyme-based cleaners

like Norwex Oven & Grill Cleaner.

And when it’s time to declutter?

Schuiling suggests the “Box Method”

(keep, donate, trash) and reminds us

that memories don’t need to be tied

will do. Her final word of advice: focus

on one area at a time and always clean

smart, not hard.

Hot take: it’s time to break free from the vice grip of Taco Tuesday. Sure, back when

we were innocent, taco-deprived souls, “Taco Tuesday” was a sweet little reminder to

indulge. But those days are behind us; we’ve officially been taco-pilled as a culture,

and we should act accordingly. After all, how can we possibly enjoy all the incredible

tacos this region has to offer if we limit ourselves to just one day a week? The truth is,

we’ve got so many amazing tacos here, and Tuesdays just don’t cut it anymore. So why

not embrace “Taco Month” and make every day Taco Tuesday? Breakfast tacos, lunch

tacos, dinner tacos—taco everything!

Nixtaco is one of the region’s best

Mexican eateries (they now have a

location in Folsom, too!) and it’s not

just the Michelin rating (though that

helps). Their handmade blue corn

tortillas set the tone, and they’ll just

keep impressing you until you tell

them to stop (but why would you?).

Dig into their Octopus Taco served

with parboiled then sautéed octopus,

serrano-infused butter, peanut

chipotle sauce, toasted chile oil with

sesame seeds, and grilled cheese, plus

“favorite dipping sauce,” these are now my

wife’s favorite calamari.

Curious about the crowd favorites and slightly

overwhelmed by all the mouthwatering rolls

passing by, we went all in on the house hits: the

King Crunch Roll, Red Dragon Roll, Fireman Roll,

and Volcano Roll. We were seeking a balance

between freshness, texture, flavor, and heat, and

this lineup nailed it. It’s easy to see why they’re so

popular.

While every roll was excellent, my wife and

I both agreed that the Red Dragon was the star

of the show. The ponzu sauce added just the

right amount of saltiness and citrus to make

the seared tuna really pop; and the flavors were

delicate and composed, coaxing us to really

focus on what we were tasting without one

flavor overpowering another. A crisp bite of

cucumber added a pop of freshness. And the

tuna? It practically melted in our mouths. But

don’t get me wrong: No sushi was left behind.

We devoured every piece of the other rolls

with zero hesitation.

We arrived early (post-nap time, thanks to

our toddler) and avoided the dinner rush, which

started picking up just as we were leaving, but

found it to be the perfect familyfriendly

time to visit.

Thanks to such a large

selection of rolls (over 45, to

be exact) and impressively

fresh ingredients, it’s easy

to see why our waitress is

such a fan. The next time

a sushi craving hits, we’ll be

back…ready to explore more of

what Ikura has to offer.

If you’re craving a getaway without going far away, look no

an ice-cold brew by the tranquil koi pond. The menu is packed with pasta, paninis,

pizzettas, and more, with plenty of gluten-free and vegan options; plus, everything

is made from scratch using fresh, local ingredients. When paired with a clean, crisp

pint, how could you go wrong? For fans of lighter beer, try the Backpacker Blonde.

Refreshing and low in bitterness, it’s a perfect daytime, warm weather sipper. They also

make IPAs, along with a blueberry pale ale, pumpkin ale, brown ale, red ale, wheat ale,

and porter; in other words, there’s an ale for all. If beer isn’t your thing, savor a cider

or glass of wine. As for the food, I went with the Grown Up Mac & Cheese, featuring a

fabulous foursome of smoked gouda, fontina, cheddar, and parmesan, with toasted

garlic breadcrumbs on top; very “adult,” indeed. The Fettucine Alfredo was equally

rich, creamy, and indulgent. My meal wasn’t complete without one of their

crowd-pleasing Nana’s Ice Cream Balls: ice cream rolled in your choice of

cookies, pie crusts, candies, and other sweet treats. Flavors change with

the seasons but currently include grasshopper (mint chip), strawberry

shortcake, cinnamon roll, and the always-available original (peanut butter

cinnamon-graham). Having one of those nights when you don’t feel like

cooking or dining out? Mode’s fresh pasta packs are a lifesaver. They take a

few minutes to prep but taste like you’ve been in the kitchen all day!

Crepes—the pancake’s thinner, more

elegant cousin. Light and completely

customizable, they make for a perfect

breakfast, lunch, snack, or dessert. A

beloved food by many, but perhaps not

something that’s attempted as often in a

home kitchen. Though they originated in

France, there have been plenty of takes

and adaptations around the world—and in

our local eateries. Whatever flavor you’re

craving, we’ve got a crepe for you.

French pastries, house-made chocolates, breakfast

items, and crepes (with gluten-sensitive options)

abound at Julian’s. Go for their Forest Berry Crepe:

fresh blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries get

paired with vanilla pastry cream for the perfectly

sweet yet refreshing combo. It’s topped with whipped

cream, if desired, but if you’d like to be extra fancy,

one can also add vanilla cold foam to the top. While

you’re there, you may just catch a glimpse of Julian

himself, who’s recently been featured on Food

SPOTLIGHT:

Kelley Murphy

What inspired you to become a volunteer

for Placer Veterans Stand Down? It’s a way

for me to give back and serve those who

have served and protected us.

What do your volunteer duties entail?

Helping to organize the providers that

offer free services to our veterans. I’m

also on the board so assist with various

duties throughout the year, aside from the

nonprofit’s annual “Stand Down” event.

Is there training required? Not much—I

learned by observing.

What’s the time commitment?

I typically spend about five hours a week

volunteering.

What’s been the best day of volunteering

so far? Even though the Stand Down

event is hard, it’s also incredibly rewarding.

Seeing a veteran come in tired and dirty,

then go home clean and happy is the

best. I especially get excited when a

homeless veteran ends up going back with

a homeless shelter.

What’s one of the biggest challenges?

Dealing with lack of finances and the

fundraising that ensues.

Placer Veterans Stand Down has

been dedicated to giving back to our

veteran community since 2016. Their

annual “Stand Down” event—this

year from May 6-8 at The Grounds

in Roseville—brings a plethora of

goods and services to veterans and

their families at no cost. For three

days, they essentially set up a “small

city” with free medical, dental, and

vision services, as well as haircuts,

veterinarian care, meals, new and

used clothing, and military surplus

items, in addition to legal aid,

homeless programs, housing, and

much more.
