THE PECULIARITIES OF MOUNTAIN WEATHER
From summer 2025, there will be a new themed trail
in Saas-Fee called ‘Eddie and the mountain weather’.
On this interactive trail from Hannig to Saas-Fee, children
(and adults), accompanied by Eddie the marmot,
will learn all about the peculiarities of high Alpine
weather. This themed trail has been designed in collaboration
with MeteoSwiss – and you can find out
some exciting facts about weather forecasting technology,
differences to the lowlands and much more
right here and now!
This text was written in collaboration with Mikhaël Schwander from MeteoSwiss.
How does the weather in the Saas Valley differ from the weather
in the lowlands?
First of all, the weather in the Saas Valley is on average colder
than in the lowlands. This is because the higher the altitude,
the lower the air pressure and the more the air expands. When
warm air rises, it expands. The energy needed to expand comes
from the heat being transported. A second difference between
the Saas Valley and the lowlands is the humidity. Because of
the lower pressure, the air at higher altitudes is drier. In the
Saas Valley, the air is also drier because the valley is located
in the heart of the Alps. The northern Alpine ridge (along the
Bernese Alps) and the southern Alpine ridge (along the border
with Italy) act as a barrier against moisture from the Atlantic
and the Mediterranean. On average, there is less precipitation
in the Saas Valley than in the lowlands. In fact, the driest place
in Switzerland is the lower Visp Valley in Stalden. This is why
the sun shines more often in the Upper Valais than in most other
regions of Switzerland.
What technologies are used for weather forecasting in the
mountains?
The main tool for weather forecasting is the numerical weather
prediction model. Measurements from ground stations, precipitation
radars or satellites are processed by a computer, which
then simulates the development of the various weather parameters
for the next few hours and days, based on the laws of
atmospheric physics and mathematical equations. To do this,
the Earth’s surface and atmosphere are divided into grids of
different sizes, depending on the model. As the mountains play
an important role in weather forecasting in Switzerland, the
country is divided into a grid of 1 x 1 km for the most accurate
model. This allows local effects in the mountains to be modelled
as accurately as possible.
8
What are the most difficult elements to predict when
forecasting summer and winter weather in the mountains?
In winter, it is often difficult to correctly predict the temperature
in the Alpine valleys during high pressure conditions, i.e.
sunny weather in the mountains. If there is no wind, cold air,
which is denser than warm air, collects at night at the bottom
of the valley, where it can get very cold. These local processes
are difficult to predict. In summer, it is the thunderstorms that
make forecasting difficult. Thunderstorms are local phenomena
that require a combination of ingredients to develop. Mountains
play an important role as they force the air to rise, which can
trigger the convection (upward movement of air) necessary for
thunderstorms to form.
What role does humidity play in mountain weather?
This is related to the two previous questions. On the one hand,
the air in the Alps is drier on average. On the other hand, the
mountains favour the formation of thunderstorms. However, for
a thunderstorm to develop, the air must be sufficiently humid.
Although the highest mountains are in the Alps, thunderstorms
are not most frequent there, for example in the Saas Valley. The
conditions for thunderstorms are more favourable in the foothills
of the Alps and in the Jura, where the air is more humid.

tourify application. Discover now!

GSPON HIGH-ALTITUDE TRAIL
This hike leads from Gspon to Kreuzboden and offers impressive
views of the Mischabel Mischabel massif. The route starts
in Stalden, where a cable car takes you up to Gspon, a mountain
village with views of the Rhone river and the Saas Valley.
From the top station in Gspon, the trail takes you past
the Alpenblick mountain hotel, to the hamlet of Ze Hischinu
and south along the tree line to Finilu. After a left turn and a
chapel, the trail crosses a ditch into the Upper Black Forest
area. The path then climbs to Siwibode and on to Hoferälpi –

for experienced hikers, with the option of taking the cable
car down. Alternatively, you can descend to Saas-Balen via

Meet Eddie, your
bravest marmot friend!
Facts about me
Did you know that I like to sleep? It’s too cold for me in winter, so I
prefer to spend this time in my cave. I cool my body down so that I don’t use up
too much energy. But don’t worry – as soon as it gets warmer, I wake up feeling refreshed and
full of energy. By the way, my cave isn’t just a hole in the ground! It’s really cool – just like
you have at home, I have several rooms where I live, including a bathroom. Some of my friends
have caves that are up to 20 metres long! My favourite place to be in the summer is outside
in the sun. Why don’t you come and visit me?
Psst! My favourite food is carrots and peanuts.

FELSKINN RESTAURANT – MOUNTAIN GASTRONOMY AT
3,000 METRES
The Felskinn Restaurant sits high up – at 3,000 metres. Surrounded
by jagged rocks, high peaks and a breathtaking
mountain panorama, guests experience a very special kind
of mountain gastronomy. Sandra Kempf has been Felskinn’s
manager for the past nine years. She is passionate and dedicated
to the well-being of her guests – whether they are skiers
in winter or hikers in summer. But what does it mean to
run a restaurant at such a high altitude? A look behind the
scenes reveals the challenges and experiences that await at
Felskinn Restaurant.
Text: Laila Zurbriggen
Working at 3,000 metres – a special challenge
Working at this extreme altitude requires not only physical
adaptation, but also sophisticated organisation. The weather
plays a crucial role – in January, for example, it’s too cold to use
the terrace. The staff also have to be flexible because if there’s
a storm and the gondola isn’t running, the restaurant is closed.
Another challenge is deliveries. While restaurants in the
valley can rely on tried-and-tested delivery by transporter, this
can only be done by gondola on Felskinn. “Normally the first
gondolas of the day deliver the goods,” says Sandra. “And 99%
of the time this works. But if the supplier is late, it can be difficult.
The gondolas are the same as those used to transport
guests – but especially in high season, it’s almost impossible
to find a time after the official opening when the gondolas are
empty and ready for transport.
But if we don’t have the goods, we can’t work. So we have
to stay calm. If we’re lucky, we can squeeze in a delivery, but
otherwise we do what we can.” This example shows the importance
of good planning, especially since most of the dishes
at Felskinn Restaurant are homemade. “Our guests especially
love our homemade cakes,” says Sandra. “They can’t believe
we make them ourselves here at 3,000 metres,” she laughs. But
it is exactly this devotion to her restaurant that makes Sandra
such an outstanding hostess.
22
Sandra Kempf – a passionate manager
As you enter Felskinn Restaurant, you will immediately notice Sandra’s signature
style. Lovingly designed details make the mountain restaurant a place
where you immediately feel welcome. Old skis on the walls, a rustic piano
in the middle of the room and loving decorations create an atmosphere of
warmth and security – a feeling that cannot be taken for granted at this
altitude. Sandra Kempf didn’t end up here by chance. She has always been
drawn to the mountains and her love of gastronomy has been with her for
many years – starting at the restaurant Gletschergrotte, which she ran with
her partner at the time. She then took over the Vernissage at Plattjen for a
year. At this point, after a bad winter, she was thinking of retiring from mountain
gastronomy – until she was offered the lease on Restaurant Felskinn.
After some consideration, she decided to take up the challenge and take
over the restaurant. “It wasn’t easy, but I always knew that this was where I
belonged,” she says. The decision to run a restaurant at an altitude of 3,000 metres
presented challenges, but Sandra embraced them with enthusiasm. What
drives her is her fascination with the unique characteristics of this place – the
rugged, unspoilt nature, the daily challenges and the guests who enrich her
daily life with their enthusiasm and stories.
She has never regretted her decision: “I love my
work here. Having such a view and such an environment
to work in is something very special. But
the best part is my guests – they make my job really
fulfilling. My goal is for everyone who visits Felskinn
Restaurant to leave with a smile and fond memories.”
One thing is clear – with her warm personality and
tireless efforts, she manages to achieve this goal
time and time again.
Enjoy culinary highlights in the midst
of our imposing mountain scenery with
a dreamlike panorama.

MATTMARK
BEHIND THE SCENES AT EUROPE’S LARGEST NATURAL DAM
Nestled in the high Alpine landscape of the Saas Valley,
the Mattmark Dam is a technical masterpiece and a
symbol of sustainable energy production. As the largest
earth dam in Europe, it is impressive in terms of
its dimensions and the crucial role it plays in the region’s
energy supply. But there is much more to the
imposing dam above Saas-Almagell than just engineering
prowess.
Text: Bernd Schmellenkamp
A century-long project with history
Planning for the dam began in the 1950s to harness the region’s
vast hydroelectric potential. Construction was completed
in 1969. The dam is made entirely of moraine debris deposited
by glaciers over thousands of years. With a height of 120 metres
and a crest length of 780 metres, it impounds Lake Mattmark
over an area of approximately 1.76 square kilometres. The
reservoir can hold up to 100 million cubic metres of water, an
essential amount for a constant energy supply.
Today, the plant is a key part of Switzerland’s energy
infrastructure. The Mattmark AG hydroelectric power stations,
operated by Axpo, supply around 650 gigawatt hours of electricity
every year – that’s enough to supply tens of thousands of
households.
Efficient technology for sustainable energy
The water from Lake Mattmark is deliberately drained and sent
through pressure tunnels to turbines in the power stations below.
The power of the water drives generators that feed electricity
into the grid. The tried-and-tested technology has been
continuously improved over the years. “We rely on state-of-theart
control systems and efficient water management to maximise
energy yield and minimise environmental impact,” explains
Philippe Ruffiner, Operations Manager at Kraftwerke Mattmark.
Automated control systems that react to environmental
changes in real time and regulate the water supply accordingly
are an important component in increasing efficiency. In addition,
digital twins are increasingly being used to enable simulations
to optimise power plant operation.
Hydropower is becoming increasingly important, especially
in times of energy transition. "Hydropower is one of the
few renewable energy sources that is baseload capable, meaning
that it can supply electricity at any time. This makes plants
like Mattmark particularly valuable", says Ruffiner. The Mattmark
Dam makes an important contribution to the stability of
the electricity grid and is a prime example of renewable energy
production without CO2 emissions.

The beauty of sustainability:
Mattmark Reservoir–Monte Moro Pass Hike
This spectacular hike links the imposing Mattmark Dam
with the historical pass route over the Monte Moro
Pass. The tour starts at the dam wall, where a wide
path leads along the lake, offering magnificent views of
the surrounding four-thousand-metre peaks. The climb
to the Monte Moro Pass requires some stamina but is
rewarded with a unique view of the Monte Rosa massif.
At the top, the prominent golden statue of the
Virgin Mary is a landmark for travellers and pilgrims.
The view stretches across the Valais to Piedmont. This
hike is an impressive example of how nature and technology
can merge: with the masterpiece of hydroelectric
power here and the ancient trade route between
Switzerland and Italy there. An unforgettable experience
for nature lovers and history buffs alike.

Challenges and sustainability
Maintaining such an imposing structure is a major challenge.
Melting glaciers and extreme weather conditions affect water
levels, and the transport of sediment from the catchment area
needs to be monitored regularly. At the same time, environmental
regulations must be adhered to in order to maintain the
ecological balance. “We carry out regular environmental impact
assessments and optimise the water balance to minimise negative
impacts on flora and fauna,” says Ruffiner.
One example of environmentally friendly measures is
the release of residual water at the water intakes. This ensures
that there is sufficient water below the intakes to maintain
habitats in the riverbed. “For us, sustainability means not only
producing energy, but also doing so in harmony with nature,”
says Ruffiner.
A destination for technology enthusiasts and nature lovers
In addition to its function as energy storage, the Mattmark Dam
is also a popular tourist destination in the Upper Valais. Visitors
can learn more about the technology and history of the plant on
guided tours or explore the impressive landscape on numerous
hiking trails.
One of the most beautiful trails runs along the reservoir,
promising spectacular views of the surrounding glaciers. The
circular walk around the lake takes about three hours and offers
plenty of opportunities to admire the high Alpine landscape.
Another highlight is the Glacier Trail, which provides
a deep insight into the geological changes in the region. Our
Mattmark hiking tip (see box) shows how nature and technology
can be experienced in harmony – an experience that impressively
underlines the sustainable significance of this structure.

VIRTUALLALIN:
A VR-ADVENTURE AT 3,500 METRES
The Mittelallalin, home to the world’s highest metro
and a revolving restaurant, is truly a place of superlatives.
With the brand-new VR experience, VirtuAllalin,
the Mittelallalin is welcoming another attraction
– the highest virtual reality experience in the world!
Text: Laila Zurbriggen
The need for innovation
For mountain destinations, the rise of the zero-degree line is a
challenge that cannot be ignored. It attracts many visitors every
day, serves as a starting point for various mountain tours and is
a highlight for those who prefer a more relaxed approach to enjoying
the high Alpine feeling. The popular Ice Pavilion, a former
attraction at the Mittelallalin, could no longer be operated in the
summer due to high temperatures and the associated melting
of the glacier. What was left was an unused space, an urge to
innovate and, ultimately, an idea – a virtual reality experience
at 3,500 metres above sea level!
From planning to technical implementation
The vision for the VR-experience on the Mittelallalin was developed
by an interdisciplinary working group from Saastal
Tourism AG and Saastal Bergbahnen AG and implemented
by Bandara, a leading company in virtual staging. Using hand
tracking technology and an intuitive user interface, visitors can
interact naturally in the virtual world. These technical solutions
ensure a seamless and immersive experience that brings the
history of the glacier to life for visitors.
36
The virtual glacier was modeled on the real example using
drone images.
With these VR goggles, the adventure begins: immerse yourself
in new worlds - in the middle of the Alps.
Experience the glacier up close
VirtuAllalin takes visitors on a fascinating journey into the heart
of the glacier, accompanied by the priest Johann Josef Imseng,
the pioneer of tourism in the Saas Valley. During this interactive
experience, they explore the history and myths of the glacier in
a unique way, virtually flying over the eternal ice, diving into its
depths and solving exciting puzzles to uncover the hidden heart
of the glacier. The immersive story combines exciting facts with
a gripping narrative that not only captivates but also touches
the heart.
Discover the new VirtuAllalin now!
The first part of VirtuAllalin will open for the 2025 summer season
and will accommodate 8 to 10 people per session, with
each lasting approximately 15 minutes. A second part is planned
for summer 2026, adding new scenes to the experience.
The stunning show will run continuously every day to allow as
many visitors as possible to enjoy the spectacular experience.
Whether you come alone or with a group, VirtuAllalin promises
an unforgettable adventure for all ages that will immerse you
in the secrets of the glacier. VirtuAllalin is included with the
Metro-Plus ticket!

VIA FERRATA JEGIHORN
The Jegihorn via ferrata is not only one of the most beautiful
in Switzerland but also the highest in the Western Alps. With
its stunning scenery, minimal use of iron and plenty of direct
rock contact, it offers an unparalleled climbing activity for
experienced climbers.
Around 400 hooks, steps and holds, as well as five ladders,
make the climb to the summit easier. A special highlight
is the spectacular 120-metre suspension bridge, which requires
courage and skill.
In early summer, there may still be isolated snowfields
on the descent, which should be crossed with care. Due to
its exposed location, this tour should only be undertaken in
perfectly stable weather conditions.
