Lifesaving Skills

Session Held

Lichfield District Council hosted a special

training session designed to equip local

partners with essential skills to save lives in

emergencies involving severe bleeding.

The ‘Stop The Bleed’ session, held on 1st April,

welcomed representatives from organisations

including Bromford, Betterway Recovery,

Lichfield City Council, Burntwood Town

Council, Platinum Boxing, Tesco, Liberty

Jamboree and Lichfield District Councillors.

Participants were taught how to apply pressure

to and pack a wound and improvise a

tourniquet to halt the flow of blood.

The session was led by Sir Keith Porter, a

retired trauma surgeon and co-founder of the

charity Citizen Aid. The charity focuses on

empowering people with practical knowledge

to help themselves and others in incidents

involving multiple casualties.

Adventure

Golf for Park

Visitors to Beacon Park can look forward to an

exciting new attraction, as plans for a brand

new adventure golf course have been approved.

The current mini golf course, located next to

Lakeside Bistro, will be removed this summer

and replaced with a vibrant, upgraded 9-hole

adventure golf facility. The new course will

feature large, eye-catching structures inspired

by well-known local landmarks, including

Lichfield Cathedral, the Garrick Theatre,

Burntwood Climbing Wall, and Beacon Park

itself.

6

The design will bring more colour and creativity,

complementing the nearby children’s play area

and adding to the park’s appeal for families and

visitors of all ages.

The new adventure golf course is one of the

new or enhanced facilities in the ‘Boosting

Beacon’ £600,000 investment using Community

Infrastructure Levy funding from local

developments. Brand new outdoor padel courts

were announced last October, with plans to

open later in 2025, along with a new mini nature

reserve, wheelchair friendly bouncer and

covered area.

New Sign

Welcomes Visitors

Just in time for summer, Lichfield District

Council has unveiled a new city sign spelling out

its name in big white block letters – a perfect

photo opportunity for visitors and residents.

Now in place at Beacon Park, the sign sits

against the stunning backdrop of Lichfield

Cathedral, making it a must-visit spot for

snapping pictures and sharing local pride.

The bespoke sign was crafted by Burntwoodbased

company Staffordshire Signs and funded

through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. It’s

part of a broader High Street Vibrancy initiative,

which is seeing us invest nearly £100,000 into

enhancing public spaces in Lichfield and

Burntwood.

Additional improvements under the scheme

include colourful new planters, festive bunting,

decorative bollard covers, a new city mural, and

enhanced street cleaning — all aimed at making

town centres more welcoming and enjoyable.

Flash Mob

in City Centre

On April 2025, some of the youth ensemble

from The Pocket Dream surprised shoppers in

Lichfield Market Square with an impromptu

dance performance set to There’s No Business

Like Show Business.

The youth ensemble appeared incognito in

black clothing, then suddenly introduced by

Sophie Allen, they burst into colour with sparkly

hats, bright outfits and infectious energy. With

members of The Pocket Dream cast including

Sam Rabone, Ben Thornton, Tricia Adele-Turner

and Joe Feeney in attendance, the performance

was a wonderful celebration of the talents of

this brilliant youth cast with the people of

Lichfield. Following the performance, the

Garrick then gave away four free tickets each to

10 lucky winners, attached to the back of flyers

which were handed out to passersby.

The performance was a huge success, and the

Garrick looks forward to welcoming audiences

to see The Pocket Dream until Saturday 3rd

May.

Tackling Anti-Social

Behaviour Together

By Doug Pullen, Leader of

Lichfield District Council

Over recent months, many residents across

Lichfield and Burntwood have shared

their concerns with me about a growing sense

of unease in their communities. While the

statistics show only a slight increase in antisocial

behaviour, I think most of us would

agree - it feels like more than that. We’re

seeing it in our neighbourhoods, in our town

and city centres, and, sadly, in the places

where families should feel safest.

Anti-social behaviour, however minor it might

seem on paper, chips away at our quality of life. It makes people feel

unsafe, unsettled, and unwelcome in their own communities. That’s

something I take incredibly seriously.

Of course, the primary responsibility for tackling criminality - of any

kind - sits with our police force. I fully acknowledge the difficult job

Staffordshire Police are tasked with. Their resources are stretched, and

they’re expected to be all things to all people. But I do question

whether the current balance is right. We’ve made it clear to the police

that low-level crime and anti-social behaviour matters. Not just because

of the incidents themselves, but because of what they can lead to if left

unchecked.

But this isn’t just about what the police can do. Lichfield District

Council has a role to play too - and we’re stepping up.

Over the past two years, we’ve invested over £1 million into

improving access to leisure and social activities. Why? Because we know

that sport, movement, and community connection aren’t just good for

your physical health - they're powerful tools for prevention. When

people, especially young people, have meaningful ways to spend their

time, they’re far less likely to drift into trouble.

We’re one of the very few district councils in the country that runs

a programme like Us Girls, which creates safe, inclusive spaces for

young women to get active, build confidence, and connect with others.

We’ve also ramped up our offering of free and low-cost activities

through our leisure centres, and through initiatives like Getin2it, which

is specifically designed to reach those most at risk of becoming

disengaged.

We do this not because we have to - but because we believe that real

change happens when we get ahead of the problem. When we offer

support instead of waiting to offer consequences.

But let me be equally clear: we will not tolerate behaviour that makes

people feel unsafe in their own streets and neighbourhoods. Lichfield

and Burntwood deserve better. And while we’re doing our part through

community and prevention, we will continue to press our partners at

Staffordshire Police to prioritise visible, effective action on the ground.

We all want to live in communities where people look out for one

another, where young people feel supported - not lost - and where the

actions of a few don’t dictate the lives of the many. That’s the Lichfield

District I believe in, and that’s the one I’ll continue working for, every

single day.

With a laid-back vibe, 55 Wade

Street is the perfect place for a

lunchtime treat, or to simply enjoy a

drink or two.

Greeted by friendly staff, we were

seated and served a delicious

cocktail while we studied the new

menu light lunch dishes available.

Opting for Steak Frites along with Chicken and Potato salad, we

enjoyed hearty-sized portions of delicious food, that was well cooked,

and left us wanting more! Obviously, dessert was on the cards, which

consisted of Baileys Cheesecake and Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding –

perfect!

55 Wade Street is open Tuesday to Thursday: 12pm-10pm, Friday &

Saturday: 12pm-12am, and Sunday: 1pm-7pm. As well as lunch and dinner,

the venue also offers a Bottomless Lunch Menu served from Tuesday to

Saturday.

Surprisingly Great

Summer Companions!

By Lauren Hirst

With the summer approaching, you may be thinking it’s a

great time of year to get a dog. You might envision a

labrador bounding across fields or an energetic terrier

chasing a ball in the park. We know that greyhounds aren’t the first

breed that many people think about when getting a dog, but it’s our

mission at Home Run Hounds to let people know that the elegant

and often misunderstood greyhound makes a fantastic pet! They

might even surprise you with their suitability as summer pets.

Firstly, despite being supreme athletes, greyhounds are surprisingly

low-energy dogs and take their retirement very seriously. After a short

burst of ‘zoomies’ in the back garden (which is a joy to witness), they

then need to lie-down for several hours! This makes them ideal

companions for those warmer days when you'd rather relax indoors

than go for a long walk.

Secondly, because they have short coats with no undercoat, they don’t

shed nearly as much as other dogs but they do feel the heat – another

reason to laze about in the shady part of your garden while you enjoy a

book and tall glass of iced “whatever takes your fancy.”

Thirdly, with their gentle and affectionate nature, they are often happy

to simply be near their humans, enjoying the slower pace of summer life.

A couple of shorter, cooler walks in the early morning or late evening

is all they need to keep them happy and healthy followed by a cuddle on

the sofa - the perfect way to spend a pleasant summer evening. So, this

summer, consider opening your heart and home to a greyhound, the

perfect laid-back companion for enjoying the sunshine and slower pace

of the season.

If you’d like to find out more about the breed, Home Run Hounds is

out and about at several Awareness Roadshows all over the Midlands.

Visit our “upcoming events” page at www.homerunhounds.co.uk or get

in touch on 07488 253537 to arrange a “meet the breed” visit to one of

our kennels – Watford Gap Kennels in Shenstone, Broadmarsh Kennels

in Hagley, and Monkspath Kennels in Wombourne. With 60 dogs in our

care, we’re sure we can find you a perfect companion to laze about with

this summer!

Style with

Confidence,

At Any Age!

By Sophie Shelley

As spring has blossomed across the landscape in recent weeks

and we have finally enjoyed some sunshine, many of us are

facing a common, yet rarely discussed challenge: maintaining

a functional wardrobe while experiencing weight fluctuations.

Creating a wardrobe that adapts to your changing body after having

a baby or during menopause isn’t just practical - it’s essential for

maintaining confidence and comfort throughout the seasons.

Weight changes become increasingly common as we age due to

hormonal shifts, medication side effects, and changing activity levels.

Rather than fighting this natural process, embracing adaptable fashion

solutions can transform how you feel about getting dressed each

morning. Some simple tweaks can enable you to build some flexibility

into your wardrobe, making it easier to accept these fluctuations.

Let’s be honest, style during perimenopause and menopause can feel

like a battle. Your body is changing in ways you never expected, and

suddenly, the clothes that used to make you feel amazing just don’t fit or

flatter like they used to. So now what? Don’t worry, read on!

First of all, acknowledge and accept that your body has changed!

Perimenopause and menopause will change your body composition - it’s

a fact. That means some of your go-to outfits may not work anymore, and

that can be tough to accept.

I’ve noticed that what I need from my clothes has changed dramatically.

Many women also experience changes in their boobs. I strongly

recommend going for a bra fitting and making sure your underwear is a

good fit. What has been your size for many years may well have changed.

I speak from recent experience here! Get that right and your clothes will

fit and look better.

So, let’s start by focussing on what you can control - you can’t opt out

of perimenopause (if only!) but you can control how you respond to it.

Lifestyle choices matter, and so does what you choose to wear. And, let’s

face it, what you wear has a huge impact on how you feel.

Maybe your old wardrobe doesn’t feel quite right anymore, but that

doesn’t mean you have to settle for oversized, shapeless clothing or

squeeze into things that no longer fit. Think of this as a style evolution,

not a loss. Midlife is all about reinvention—your wardrobe should reflect

that too!

Here’s what matters now:

• Clothes that adapt – our bodies fluctuate, so we need clothes that

work with us, not against us.

• Shape without the squeeze – forget skin-tight or shapeless - there’s

a middle ground that flatters without discomfort.

• Soft, breathable fabrics – our skin is more sensitive and our internal

thermostats are unpredictable. The right fabrics make all the difference.

• Versatility – high-quality, mix-and-match pieces mean fewer “I have

nothing to wear” moments.

• Coverage that feels right for you – whether you love showing your

arms or prefer a little more

coverage, your wardrobe should

work for you, not force you into

hiding.

A capsule wardrobe approach

simplifies getting dressed while

accommodating body changes.

Think of it as creating a small

collection of versatile pieces that

work harmoniously together

regardless of minor weight shifts.

But how, I hear you ask?

• Select a few core pieces in

complementary colours – just

five tops and five bottoms can

create 25 different outfits!

• Choose fabrics with natural

stretch.

• Focus on classic styles that transcend trends.

• Include at least three “transitional” pieces that work across seasons.

This spring’s fashion trends fortunately align perfectly with adaptable

wardrobes. Wide-leg jeans not only improve posture but provide room

for weight fluctuations while maintaining style. Similarly, leggings paired

with oversized sweaters offer comfort alongside flexibility. As warmer

weather approaches, consider adding stretchy knit dresses that flow with

your body rather than restrict it.

Technical textiles have revolutionised adaptive clothing. Fabrics with

two-way stretch, like high-quality ponte knit, maintain their shape while

accommodating weight changes - think of them as your body’s loyal

companions through life’s natural transitions. Don’t forget, the most

sustainable clothing is something that you already own – try shopping

your own wardrobe first!

Rather than replacing entire wardrobes, many women are discovering

the power of adaptive tailoring. Consider investing in pieces with side

seam adjustability, hidden elastic panels, drawstring or partially elasticised

waistbands. Another easily adaptable style is a wrap dress or top that

adjusts naturally.

When weight fluctuates, accessories remain constant companions.

Statement pieces of jewellery draw attention while creating visual

balance regardless of weight changes.

Complement your spring wardrobe with sage green nails for a fresh

seasonal touch, or experiment with spring hair colours that brighten

your appearance and draw attention upward. Just remember to choose

colours that flatter your skin tone.

Remember ladies, our bodies at 50+ carry wisdom, stories, and

experiences. Your wardrobe should honour this journey rather than fight

against it. Think of your fluctuating body not as a fashion problem but as

a natural rhythm - like seasons changing in a beautiful landscape. The

answer lies in creating a wardrobe as flexible, resilient and beautiful as

you are.

A Style Analysis Day with me will uncover your unique Clothing

Personality and together we will discover styles and clothes that work

with and for you, not against you. This service is totally bespoke and we

will find out how you can do YOUR STYLE, YOUR WAY. (Even if our

bodies aren’t quite what they used to be!)

Momentum in May:

Small Shifts, Big Wins

By Wendy Hill

Let’s be honest – January isn’t the easiest time to start

something new. It’s cold, it’s dark, we’re all recovering from

festive overindulgence, and half the country seems to be

living on beige food and willpower. The days are short, motivation

is low, and those well-meant resolutions often fizzle out before

the month is through.

That’s why I believe May is actually the perfect time to make changes

that last. There’s a natural lightness to this time of year. We’ve made it

through the winter, Easter has come and gone, and while summer

hasn’t quite arrived, there’s a sense of promise in the air. It’s not as

frantic as January or as busy as September. It’s a chance to pause, take

stock, and gently ask ourselves – how do I really want to feel for the

rest of this year? Or even, how do I want to feel for the rest of my life?

This is the sweet spot. A chance to reset and rebalance, not through

restriction or radical overhauls, but with small, meaningful changes that

actually fit into your life.

As a nutritional therapist specialising in energy, hormone health, and

sustainable lifestyle shifts, I see every day how powerful these small

tweaks can be, not just for women in midlife, but for anyone who’s

feeling a bit flat, foggy or off-track.

Here are three simple but powerful ways to build momentum in May:

• Feed Your Energy, Not Your Hunger!

We all know what we should be doing – eating more plants, less sugar,

better hydration. But in the chaos of everyday life, most of us are eating

for convenience or comfort. And our bodies respond accordingly: with

fatigue, cravings, brain fog, and mood swings.

One of the biggest game changers I see in my clinic is learning how to

eat to balance blood sugar.

Our blood sugars should naturally rise and fall after eating, but modern

foods and diets mean that often we get spikes and crashes. It’s the lows

that are the problem and they show up as mid-morning and midafternoon

slumps. The times when you reach for caffeine or sugar to

help you get through the day.

The fix? A few strategic tweaks:

• Start your day with protein and healthy fats (think eggs, nuts, Greek

yoghurt, or avocado on seeded toast) rather than just carbs or

caffeine.

• Include a portion of protein at every meal – it slows digestion and

keeps you fuller, longer.

• Avoid snacking between meals, particularly on processed and refined

foods such as biscuits, cakes or pastries. They will actually make you

feel worse rather than better.

• Treat sweets and fruit as a dessert – have them as part of your meal

to balance blood sugars better.

This isn’t about restriction, it’s about fuelling your body in a way that

supports stable energy, clear thinking, and better moods.

• Support Your Stress, Don’t Silence It

Stress isn’t all bad – it’s a normal, even helpful, part of being human. But

modern life has us simmering in low-level stress all day, every day.

When stress becomes chronic, your body responds by producing too

much cortisol, your main stress hormone. Over time, this can lead to

everything from sleep problems and weight gain to hormonal

imbalances and burnout.

The key? Learn to regulate your nervous system – the part of your

body that decides whether you’re in “fight or flight” or “rest and

repair”.

Here are a few simple ways to create calm:

• Take five slow, deep belly breaths before meals. Slow breathing helps

shift you into your parasympathetic, or ‘rest and digest’, state. Meaning

you will be able to extract more nutrients from your food and reduce

the risk of post meal bloat.

• Get outside every single day. If you can’t walk then take your cuppa

outside, and if you can just a 10-minute walk in nature can reduce

cortisol and boost mood.

• Create micro-pauses in your day. Simply close your eyes for 30

seconds, stretch, drink water, and simply ‘be’ for a moment.

You don’t have to meditate for an hour a day, these simple tips will give

your nervous system a few gentle nudges back to balance.

• Start With “Something”

This might be the most powerful shift of all. Most of us don’t make

changes because we’re waiting for the perfect time. When things calm

down, when we have more energy, when the kids are sorted, when

work is quieter...

But here’s the truth: small, imperfect actions taken consistently beat

grand intentions every single time.

Instead of aiming for a complete lifestyle overhaul, ask:

• What’s one small thing I can do today that supports how I want to

feel?

• Can I add a glass of water first thing in the morning?

• Could I go to bed 15 minutes earlier tonight?

• What if I swapped one processed snack this week for a whole food

alternative?

Momentum builds when we stop waiting and start doing. And the

beauty of this time of year, with its longer days and softer light, is that

it offers us just enough space to begin.

Want Support?

If this resonates, and you’re curious about what’s possible when you

give yourself a little focused time and care, I’ll be opening the doors

soon to my 28 Day Transformation Programme, starting in June. It’s

designed for real people with busy lives and is a structured, supportive

reset to help you feel more energised, calm and in control again.

Your Garden in

May

By Byron Lewis

We’ve had a real treat throughout April with some fantastic

weather – lots of sunshine and very little rain. Hopefully the sun will

continue to make an appearance through May as this is the prime

month for many people to make a start on their summer patio

plant displays.

Garden centres up and down the country are beginning to fill with

all the old favourite bedding plants like marigold, busy Lizzie,

petunia, lobelia and many more. There is so much choice available

nowadays it can be difficult to know what to pick! Million bells (also

called callie or calibrachoa) are a great option – these have masses

of bright flowers all through the summer and come in a range of

colours. Use these in window boxes or hanging baskets – they have

a trailing habit.

For pots and baskets in shady spots, use fuchsia, begonia and busy

Lizzie (impatiens). These perform well in darker positions and give

lots of colour. Don’t forget all of these plants will need protection

from the frost, so don’t go too mad yet unless you are happy to

protect your purchases from cold weather (don’t say I didn’t warn

you!)

When you plant your baskets and pots, use good quality compost

and consider adding some slow-release feed and water retention

gel. Use this at the time of planting and you will reduce your

workload over the summer – the feed lasts all season and the water

gel will cut your watering too!

Turning to lawns, it's time to give a weed and feed product to your

lawn. Feeding will help new growth, but if your lawn is thin you can

also re-seed. Use multi-purpose lawn seed, which is generally hard

wearing and mix it with compost, then sprinkle evenly over the thin

area. A word of caution - water the lawn BEFORE sowing, as you

can end up washing all the seed into one area causing thick patches.

Also protect the seed for a few weeks from the birds by getting

some netting over the area.

Fingers crossed for a beautiful summer – with just enough rain only

overnight… is that too much to ask?!

Burntwood FEATURE

A Little Bit

About…

Burntwood

Former mining town, Burntwood, is a

civil parish in the Lichfield District and

lies approximately four miles west of the

city. With a population of more than

26,000, the bustling town forms one of

the largest urbanised parishes in England.

The name Burntwood or

‘Brendewood’ derives from the burning

of a heath in Cannock Forest by the vill

(township) of Hammerwich; the forest

proceedings in 1296 mentions the

incident. This is the first mention of Burntwood in history, however the

town’s name was in use by 1298 when the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield

had 300 acres of common pasture in ‘Brendewoode’.

32

The town expanded in the nineteenth century around the coal mining

A Place for

Community & Business

By Darren Ennis, Leader of Burntwood Town Council

One year on, I'm pleased to

announce that Chase Terrace

Community Centre has been fully

refurbished, thanks to the fantastic

efforts of Lichfield West Midlands

Trading Services and their

dedicated project team, especially

Michael and Helen. A special shoutout

goes to the incredible staff at

Burntwood Town Council. It's easy

to overlook that we are a small

parish council with a limited team, and a project of this magnitude

is not typically within our scope. Steve Lightfoot, our Town Clerk,

and Kat Horner, our Community Development Officer, have gone

above and beyond to ensure this project was completed on time

and within budget.

The Community Centre is about to open to the public, and has

generated considerable interest and offers numerous benefits to our

town. We have various groups lined up, providing a range of activities,

support, and opportunities. The essence of acquiring this building was to

make Burntwood a wonderful place to live and to provide a space for

those groups to grow and develop.

industry with areas like Chase Terrace and Chasetown being established as

mining villages. While the coal mining industry is no longer active in the

area, its legacy remains evident in the town's history and heritage.

One claim to fame is that Burntwood is officially home to the smallest

park in the UK (opened to commemorate the marriage of the Prince of

Wales in 1863), Prince's Park, which is located next to Christ Church on

the junction of Farewell Lane and Church Road.

Today, Burntwood is a lively hub of activity, home to a plethora of

businesses, venues and community groups who thrive in this small, yet

mighty, town.

Over the past month, I've also had the pleasure of visiting our local

businesses to show support and discover what they contribute to our

community. From the delightful offerings at Café Fika to the vibrant

atmosphere at Chasetown Football Club and the new yoga studio on

Chasetown High Street, Burntwood is truly a business hub, boasting

very few empty shops or units. This speaks volumes about our

community being a great place to work as well as live.

On Sunday 18th May at 10am we will kick off our Dementia

Awareness Walk alongside Burntwood Dementia Friendly Community,

starting from Chasewater Innovation Centre. We continue to

collaborate with partners to raise funds and awareness of dementia and

make Burntwood a more dementia-friendly place. The 19th - 25th May

marks Dementia Action Week, a national initiative aimed at encouraging

community action on dementia, and Burntwood Dementia Friendly

Community have put together a series of events during this week

tailored for individuals living with dementia and their carers. More

details can be found on our website and social media pages. Our

partners, including Friends of Burntwood Library, MHA Communities,

and Magnolia Friends are committed to raising awareness throughout

this week.

Additionally, our second market of the year will take place on Sunday

11th May at Sankey’s Corner, themed around VE Day to commemorate

80 years since peace was declared in Europe on 8th May. This market

will be a wonderful celebration, featuring music from the talented

Bluebird Belles and fun activities for the kids. It promises to be an event

worth visiting!

opportunities, please follow Burntwood Town Council on Facebook,

Instagram, and Twitter, or visit our website at www.burntwoodtc.gov.uk.

Stay True

to Your Beauty!

By Sally Wagstaff

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…

Right? So, why are so many people

influenced by images we see on the

internet? Throughout humanity, we have

been conditioned to find different things

attractive and have held ourselves to a

range of different beauty standards. In the

16th and 17th centuries, long flowing hair

(or wigs!) were considered attractive for

men, as it was again in the 70s (minus the

wigs.) And need I remind you about the difference between 80s

eyebrows and those of a few years ago?!

The information bombarding young people now is far more intense,

constant and from many sources, leading people to feel that they look

wrong, or ugly, if they don’t conform to certain beauty standards.

Unfortunately, due to the easy availability of cheap injectables, many

people are subjecting themselves to dramatic treatments to essentially

change how they look, seeking to change the shape of their face or the

entire profile of their bone structure. I understand the difficulty of being

bullied for having a receding chin, very thin lips, buck teeth, or the other

things that children (and, sadly, adults) tease each other about, but we

need to be careful that we are not allowing society to dictate how we

‘should’ look, and making anyone outside of those ‘norms’ consider

themselves to be weird, or unattractive.

Mostly, the treatments I offer at Sally Wagstaff Aesthetics tend to focus

on replacing things that have disappeared due to ageing, such as mid-face

volume or lip volume, and adjusting jowls, nasolabial folds and

marionettes on older women. However, I do occasionally get approached

by younger women who want help with features that have caused them

to be bullied, to lack confidence, and those that feel like these features

have in some way held them back in life.

While I will help people in these positions, I am always extremely

careful not to play off their insecurities, and not allow over-treatment. I

will put subtle filler in to reshape and plump very thin lips, but would be

careful to ensure they do not become ‘filler blind’, and end up over filling.

I will put filler in a very receding chin, but I am careful not to make them

look like a caricature.

One of the things I will not do is help someone to fundamentally

change how they look, fill to the point of making them look

unrecognisable compared to their original self, or administer fillers in

accordance with current trends - particularly when those trends are

almost always seen on TikTok videos of highly filtered women.

If I am asked to do this, as I am occasionally, I will explain why I won’t,

and it is my responsibility as a medical aesthetics practitioner to assess

whether this client may be suffering from a more severe form of body

dysmorphia, where the image the client sees in the mirror is actually very

different from reality. If that is the case, I must consider referring them

for support - these kinds of issues can become all-encompassing and

very damaging. For the most part, they understand why I am turning

them away. However, there will always be someone who will take their

money, and sadly they often will seek out those people.

In the words of Baz Luhrmann: “You will not understand the power and

beauty of your youth until they've faded, but trust me, in 20 years, you'll

look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now

how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.

You are not as fat as you imagine. Oh, and wear sunscreen.”

Til next time, you beautiful humans!

Lichfield music concert to raise funds for a

clean water project in Zambia

Tickets are now available for the musical fundraising

event Vibes & Voices, taking place on Saturday 17 May,

at Wade Street Church, Lichfield. Featuring

performances from Rock Choir and the Aspire Jazz

Band, this concert will raise funds to provide clean

water for a village in Zambia through World Vision, an

international children’s charity.

Oli Nicholls from Wade Street Church, who also works for World

Vision, explained the inspiration behind the fundraiser: “We take water

for granted, but for many people – especially children – it means

walking miles every day just to fill a container for their family. This daily

struggle prevents children from attending school and enjoying a good

quality of life.

“This event is a chance for us, the Lichfield community, to come

together and make a real difference. It means a lot to have two

fantastic musical acts supporting this cause, and we hope local people

will come along, enjoy the evening, and show their support.”

Rock Choir, known for its lively performances and uplifting harmonies,

will bring a mix of well-loved pop and rock hits to the stage, delivering

an energetic and engaging experience for the audience. Meanwhile,

Aspire, The Lichfield Community Jazz Band, will treat attendees to a

rich selection of classic jazz tunes, blending smooth melodies with

vibrant, swinging rhythms.

The concert will begin at 7.30pm at Wade Street Church, Lichfield,

WS13 6HL. The venue is fully accessible, and refreshments will be

available.

Tickets are priced at £10, and early booking is advised. For ticket

A Springtime

Risotto

By Alison Ranwell of Mangia Mangia

Celebrate the best of the season with fresh, green asparagus in

this beautiful Italian risotto recipe. We're lucky to be surrounded

by incredible farm shops in Lichfield stocking locally-grown and

farmed produce.

Find the freshest asparagus at New Farm Produce in Elmhurst,

WS13 8EX, and visit Bradbury's Farm Shop and Butchers at

Curborough Countryside Centre, WS13 8ES, for ethically farmed,

local meats. Bradburys supplies Mangia Mangia with meats and

stocks a fantastic range of sausages – its classic farm sausages are

perfect for this dish from Mangia Mangia's cookbook, Appetito.

Asparagus & Sausage Risotto

Preparation time: 30 minutes, serves 4

Ingredients:

750g green asparagus

80g butter

1 chopped white onion

Drizzle of extra virgin olive oil

2 farm sausages

360g risotto rice

½ glass of white wine

1 - 1.5 litres boiling vegetable broth

Black pepper

60g grated Grana Padano

Preparation:

1. Wash the asparagus and remove the lowest part by gently

bending the stalk until it snaps. Discard the bottom sections (or

use them in a soup or stock) and chop the rest of the stalk, leaving

the tips whole. If the asparagus is thick, you can use a potato

peeler to remove the hard, outer skin.

2. Sauté the chopped onion and asparagus in a deep pan with 30g

butter for a few minutes until the onion is soft and translucent.

3. Remove the tips and set aside. Take half of the contents of the

pan and place in a container suitable for a stick blender. Add a

drizzle of olive oil to the container and set aside to cool for a few

minutes.

4. Remove the skins from the sausages slicing down the side of

each one with a sharp knife and then, add the meat to the onions

and asparagus in the pan. Brown for a minute, breaking up the

sausage meat with the back of a wooden spoon as it cooks. (For

a vegetarian version, simply leave out the sausages).

5. Add the risotto rice and pour in the wine.

6. Let the alcohol cook off whilst stirring gently and then add

500ml of broth.

7. Keep gently stirring as the rice absorbs the liquid, adding more

broth as the risotto dries up.

8. In the meantime, use a stick blender to blend the onions and

asparagus from step 3 and add this puree to the risotto pan.

9. After about 20 minutes, bite into a grain of rice and if it is still

hard in the centre, add more broth and stir again for a few

minutes more.

10. When the rice is al-dente, add half a ladle of broth and switch

off the heat.

11. Using a wooden spoon, vigorously stir in the remaining butter,

black pepper and Grana Padano until creamy, this fundamental

process in risotto-making is known as La Mantecatura.

12. Let the risotto sit for one minute and give it a good stir just

before serving, placing the cooked asparagus tips on top with a

grating of black pepper and more Grana Padano if you wish. Buon

appetito!

Motoring ON POWER

Kia Sportage 3.

1.6 T-GDi FWD

By Syd Taylor

Those in the know are aware that Kia's Sportage is one of the best

family SUVs and pronounce positive verdicts on its range of

outstanding and appealing features. From the respect-inducing new

styling to its supple ride and good economy, the Sportage crosses the

'T' of the crossover formula even more successfully than before.

A top-class motor in other words, befitting those who like driving in

style and looking stylish as they drive. No wonder the Sportage is such

a good seller. Now the all-new, fifth generation model with new

underpinnings, new tech and a major revamp inside, takes the Sportage

to even greater heights.

Kia's bestseller does so many things so well that to say it serves as

a transport of delight is not to indulge in hyperbole but rather to

undersell it - buying, as it does, into today's motorists’ preference for

a compact, yet roomy and uncramped multi-purpose chariot that is

stylish even when box-ticking practical considerations.

That the SUV is here to stay is certain: not least because the rough

and tumble of today's motoring demands it in some appreciable

measure. Gone are the days of courtesy and consideration. The

padded-shoulders of 'eighties' power dressers have given way to their

motoring equivalent. This chunky yet spacious, sharply suited go-getter

has heft enough to muscle its way through traffic: in the politest sort

of way, of course. Sleek and gleaming, it looks very classy with clever

contours bringing out the substance of the style with subtlety. Class

without flash. One look at it amounts to an invitation to get busy with

the motoring.

As I put the £33,390 '3' specification 1.6 T-GDi self-charging mild

hybrid front-wheel drive variant through its paces, I was never less

impressed by its 'even better than before' road manners, its constant

acts of courtesy to driver and passenger, its confidence-inspiring

commitment in everything it does to dealing out the best possible

hand.

There's nothing to beat a car that ticks all the boxes and boxes the

ears of the opposition, making catch-up clowns of them all. You have to

admit the new Sportage makes sense.

It's rather telling when some rival manufacturers are restrictive in

making their models available for comparative scrutiny: which is not

surprising considering the strength of the Sportage. Peugeot, Renault,

Vauxhall, Ford et alia. would certainly not be on my shopping list if I

could have one of these. You have to admit that the new Sportage is

'Top of The Pops'.

You want a car that doesn't crowd you in; a car that demands

deference yet deflects envy; a car that's compact enough for

nimbleness and yet capacious enough for proper comfort; a car that

pursues the horizon with a no-compromise poise and assurance,

belying the crossover tag and its implicit engagement with a plethora

of sometimes contradictory imperatives. The Sportage is all these and

more. Versatility is the key. A boulevard cruiser for Chelsea? A

commuting carry all? The New model Sportage is the way to go

because it's now bigger inside, better quality inside, has a massive boot,

feels more refined, 'drives' better... in fact it has taken a quantum leap

forward and feels an even better car - and that is quite an achievement

when it was already so good.

Smooth from tickover, the 148bhp 1.6 petrol engine with selfcharging

mild hybrid assistance is quiet at all speeds and pulls strongly

without having to overuse the light and slick six speed manual gearbox

- all the way to about 120mph. And yet it returns good economy. The

claimed 42.8 mpg overall is conservative. Drive gently and you will see

over 55mpg.

This grand touring generalissimo does most things well. So

comfortable in its own skin, so assured in its capabilities, so

confidence-inspiring in its certainty that drudgery is taken out of

driving.

Its delight on the road resides in noticeably improved handling and

ride. At the wheel one is struck by the balanced feel, ease of control

and relaxed performance. You sit fairly high and feel quite lordly.

Ergonomics are good and there's a 'solid all round' feeling.

Kia needs no reminding that theirs is a name to be reckoned with -

and with this in mind one knows that their products are just that little

bit more considered. You get a lot of car for your money and the

bonding process is rapidly completed so that before you know it you

have come to regard the Sportage as a member of the family. If you

plough your money into a New Sportage, furrowed brows will be a

thing of the past. And then there's that seven-year warranty. This is a

manufacturer that puts its money where its mouth is. You don't take

risks like that unless you have absolute confidence in your product.
