Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek said that Türkiye remains committed to “prudent,

responsible and sustainable macroeconomic policies” in the face of ongoing

global economic uncertainty as he reaffirmed the government’s economic program during

meetings in Washington, DC.

Speaking at an event organized by the Atlantic Council on the sidelines of the spring

meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, he said the

government’s program to stabilize the Turkish economy is “on the righr track.”

Şimşek said recent global fluctuations carry risks for inflation but added that lower oil

prices and tightened monetary policy could help ease pressures.

“Inflation is likely to stay well within the program target band,” he stressed.

“Our response to global economic policy uncertainty is to stick to our prudent,

responsible, sustainable macroeconomic policies,” he said.

Despite global trade uncertainties, Şimşek said that Türkiye’s financial conditions are

helping to sustain domestic demand and reduce imports.

“With oil prices significantly lower, it implies that the actually current account deficit is

likely to be lower than our program target,” he said.

“I can assure you, spending discipline will be maintained,” he added. Page 12

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Italy on April

29, discussions to be held are expected to open new

doors for cooperation in various sectors, including

defense, aviation, cybersecurity, energy and automotive,

according to a report.

The 4th Türkiye-Italy Intergovernmental Summit will

be held on April 29 under the leadership of President

Erdoğan and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Actually, the trade wars between the U.S. and China could bring

Türkiye to the forefront. Major representatives of the Turkish business

world commented, “It won’t be easy for the U.S. economy

to fill the gap left by China—they need us. We must highlight all

our exportable goods, focus on pinpoint-targeted opportunities,

make product-based agreements, and increase the number of trade

fairs and stores in this country. This way, we can quickly increase

our $16.4 billion in exports.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. applying the lowest tariff rate—10%—to Türkiye

is regarded as an advantage. It is stated that with strategic

moves, exports to the U.S. could rise and become profitable.

Sustaining the stable growth process, increasing employment, securing

the fiscal discipline, narrowing the current account deficit

and as a result, strengthening the economic stability are the major

priorities of the Turkish Government.

The structural reforms, hastened by Türkiye’s EU accession process,

have paved the way for comprehensive changes in a number

of areas. The main objectives of these efforts were to increase the

role of the private sector in the Turkish economy, to enhance the

efficiency and resiliency of the financial sector, and to place the

exporting industries on a more solid foundation.

Despite the global imbalances and the regional turmoil, the Turkish

economy sustains its strong position on the path of sustainable

growth. As for Türkiye’s exporters, they wish to relentlessly

invest, manufacture and export.

Carrying out sizeable technology investments in various industries,

Turkish companies managed to diversify their export markets.

Realizing a fascinating growth in the past decade, the business

He added that structural transformation

was a key priority going forward, with a

focus on digital infrastructure, artificial

intelligence and green transformation to

help reduce Türkiye’s dependency on oil

and gas imports.

Commenting on global trade dynamics,

Şimşek said a fragmentation of global trade

would be harmful to all parties, including

Türkiye. Still, he noted several factors that

make the Turkish economy resilient.

“We rely on mainly domestic demand,

investments and consumption within

Türkiye for growth. So we're not as open

as many of our competitors,” he said.

“If you look at our overall exports, over

80% is with countries that either we have

free trade agreements with or that are in

the immediate neighborhood.”

Şimşek added that Türkiye's strong

manufacturing base and its deepening

integration into global value chains

enhance its strategic importance.

“I think Türkiye is one of the very few

countries out there with a sizable

manufacturing culture and capacity where

we could see Türkiye’s integration in global

value chains, when it comes to the West in

general, be strengthened,” he said.

“So Türkiye will be in a good position to

attract Western investments. Also, some

Asian players may want to have some base

in Türkiye to cater for the needs of some of

these markets.”

Şimşek stressed that Türkiye remains

an attractive destination for investors

from a long-term perspective, citing its

strong infrastructure, skilled labor force

and leadership in artificial intelligence

readiness among emerging markets.

“If you're taking a long-term perspective,

Türkiye, in my view, is still a compelling

case, despite some issues that occasionally

emerge,” he said.

Şimşek emphasized Türkiye's potential

to contribute to the European Union’s

defense needs, noting that the bloc plans

to spend €800 billion ($912 billion) on

defense over the next four years. He said

Türkiye has the capacity to help meet this

demand.

On relations with the World Bank, Şimşek

said the bank’s financial commitments to

Türkiye have risen from $17 billion to $35

billion over the past three years.

“The World Bank's focus and our priorities

perfectly match. We're talking about, for

example, green transition. They're there

for us. Productive infrastructure, they're

there for us. Digital infrastructure, they're

there for us,” he said.

Excluding gold and energy, the current

account balance ran a net surplus of $2.15

billion in February, according to the CBRT.

On the capital account side, inflows

amounted to $2.6 billion, a slowdown

from the $11.9 billion recorded in January.

With net errors and omissions outflows

at $1.1 billion and an increasing current

account deficit, official reserves shrank by

$2.9 billion in February.

In the first two months of the year, the

country posted a current account deficit

of $8.4 billion, up from the $5.6 billion gap

reported in the same period last year.

The 12-month rolling current account

deficit, which began increasing in

November of the previous year, was $12.8

billion in February, or about 1% of gross

domestic product (GDP).

It is up from $11.8 billion recorded in the

previous month.

In the same period, goods recorded a

deficit of $58.8 billion, while services

posted a surplus of $62 billion.

The future path of the current account

balance will likely be influenced by a range

of factors, including rising uncertainty from

the U.S.-China trade war, falling energy

prices, and tighter financial conditions

stemming from recent domestic political

developments, according to analysts at

Dutch banking giant ING.

Türkiye-Italy summit poised to initiate new avenues for cooperation

and infrastructure sectors. The talks,

which will also evaluate the potential

for cooperation in third countries, are

expected to contribute to the trade goals

of both nations.

Last year, Türkiye exported $12.9 billion

(TL 495.80 billion) worth of goods to Italy,

while its imports from Italy reached $19.3

billion. The $32 billion trade volume

between the two countries reflects the

positive course of economic relations,

with increasing activity in the defense

sector expected to drive further progress.

At the same time, the upcoming visit of

Erdoğan, accompanied by ministers and

businesspeople, is seen as a gateway to

new agreements and collaborations.

Lale Cander, the president of the Türkiye-

Italy Business Council of the Foreign

Economic Relations Board (DEIK),

evaluating the commercial relations

between the duo, said that Italy stands

out as one of Türkiye's top five export

markets.

She highlighted that there is potential for

cooperation in sectors such

as automotive, machinery,

textiles, chemicals,

pharmaceuticals and

energy, as well as in

high-tech areas like

defense, aviation and

space.

"As of last year, 1,610

are operating in

Türkiye with $5

billion in investments.

These investments are

concentrated in sectors like automotive,

energy, infrastructure, logistics, banking

and food. Companies like Fiat, Pirelli, Eni

and Barilla have been actively operating

in Türkiye for many years," Cander told

Anadolu Agency (AA).

"On the other hand, Turkish companies

have started becoming more visible in

Italy, particularly in the textile, food and

automotive sub-industries. The rise in

high-tech and R&D-focused investments

shows that Turkish capital in Italy is also

undergoing a transformation," she added.

She also emphasized that the business

council has been working on expanding

cooperation in new-generation themes

such as digital transformation, energy and

the green economy, and they are leading

the formation of consortia between

Turkish and Italian firms in third markets

like Africa and the Middle East.

Cander also noted that a total of 500

business representatives from both

countries will attend the forum at the

summit, which will serve as a platform

for solidifying economic and commercial

agreements.

Cander also discussed the joint venture

agreement signed between Baykar, a

leading Turkish drone manufacturer,

and Leonardo, one of Europe's largest

defense firms, in the field of unmanned

technologies. She said the agreement is

significant for strengthening

Türkiye's position in the

defense industry.

Highlighting that the

partnership will boost

the country's presence in

Europe’s rapidly growing

drone market, she said:

"Europe's drone market

is expected to reach $100

billion in the next 10

years. Plans are in place

to establish joint production

facilities both in Türkiye

and Italy, which will encourage mutual

technology transfer and supply chain

integration."

"This cooperation also produces new

opportunities for other Turkish defense

companies. Thanks to this partnership,

local firms could gain the chance to

manufacture at international standards."

Valeria Giannotta, the scientific director

of the Observatory in Türkiye by Romebased

think tank CeSPI said that trade

between Türkiye and Italy is progressing

well and maintaining a balanced path.

She highlighted the Baykar-Leonardo

partnership agreement as a turning point

for strategic partnerships expected to

increase in the future.

Giannotta mentioned that both

countries aim to reduce their strategic

dependencies on other global actors and

continued: "Türkiye and Italy share the

need to develop supply chains in various

sectors, especially in steel and chemicals,

to enhance the industrial autonomy of

Europe and the Mediterranean."

"This partnership not only supports

economic and trade complementarity

but also seeks to enhance regional

integration. When it comes to business

and the economy, Italy and Türkiye are

well-positioned to further integrate the

regional system," she maintained.

"Italy helps Türkiye access and integrate

into the European system, while Türkiye

opens the door to other markets and

regions (such as the Middle East, Africa

and Central Asia). I’d also like to point

out that Italian companies in Türkiye

consider the country a bridgehead for

entering third-country markets due to its

geographical and logistical advantages,

and they are pleased to operate there.

Italian investors also stand to benefit

from Türkiye's strengths in R&D and

technological innovation," she concluded.

Türkiye saw a slight increase in the number

of foreign visitors in the first two months of

2025 despite a decline in February, official

data showed.

Some 4.3 million tourists arrived in the

January-February period, a 0.03% increase

from a year ago, the Culture and Tourism

Ministry said.

In February alone, 2.17 million foreigners

visited Türkiye, down 5.34% on a yearly basis.

The same number had arrived in January,

which marked a record.

Tourists’ arrivals jumped to 52.63 million last

year, surpassing the previous high of 49.2

million in 2023. That figure reached 62.27

million when visits by Turks living abroad are

included.

Iranians again unseated Russians to become

top visitors. Some 223,222 Iranians arrived,

followed by Germany at 179,512 and Russia

billion in February, driven by rising imports and a decline in exports,

according to official figures released.

Exports fell by 1.6% annually, totaling $20.76 billion in February,

while imports increased by 2.4% to $28.53 billion, the Turkish

Statistical Institute (TurkStat) reported.

When energy products and non-monetary gold are excluded, the

foreign trade gap narrowed by 2.3% to $19.13 billion over the

same period.

The exports-to-imports coverage ratio dropped from 75.7% in

February 2024 to 72.8% this year. In terms of destination markets,

Germany remained Türkiye's largest export partner with $1.69

billion in goods, followed by the United Kingdom at $1.25 billion,

the United States at $1.2 billion, Italy at $1.09 billion and Iraq at

$1.01 billion.

On the import front, Russia led as Türkiye’s top supplier, accounting

for $3.86 billion. China followed closely with $3.54 billion, while

Germany, the U.S. and Switzerland contributed $2.14 billion, $1.27

billion and $1.23 billion, respectively.

the Anadolu Agency (AA), the EU’s imports

from non-member countries fell to 1.715

trillion euros ($1.87 trillion), and exports

to these countries dropped to 1.932

trillion euros in 2020 due to the COVID-19

pandemic. As a result, the EU’s external

trade volume in 2020 amounted to 3.647

trillion euros.

With the easing of the pandemic’s effects

on foreign trade, the EU’s external trade

volume rose to 5.577 trillion euros in 2022.

However, due to the economic recession

in the region, this figure dropped to 5.018

trillion euros last year.

At the end of last year, the U.S. remained

the EU’s largest trade partner, with a trade

volume of nearly 865 billion euros. China,

the world’s largest exporter, holds the

second position in the EU’s external trade,

with trade volume reaching 731.15 billion

euros by the end of 2024.

The U.K. follows with 504.8 billion euros,

and Switzerland comes next with 329.85

billion euros. Türkiye, on the other hand,

ranks fifth with a trade volume of nearly

210.8 billion euros.

Meanwhile, the EU remains Türkiye’s

largest trade partner.

Recently, Türkiye has developed its

relations with EU member countries

through the Joint Economic and Trade

Committee (JETCO) and various reciprocal

visits.

Negotiations to update the Customs Union

with the EU have also gained momentum

as part of Türkiye’s commercial diplomacy

efforts. Accordingly, these initiatives

appear to be reflected in the foreign trade

figures.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Türkiye’s

trade volume with the EU was around 138

billion euros, but this dropped to nearly

132.6 billion euros in 2020.

In the following years, the trade volume

showed a steady increase, reaching 157.13

Gaunt emphasized that U.K.-based finance, tech,

investment and recognize the country’s high growth

Gaunt stated that a new free trade agreement

(FTA) between Türkiye and the U.K., which is being

negotiated, will expand the two countries’ bilateral

trade to new sectors, especially in agriculture,

education, health and technology.

These new sectors will open up new opportunities

with British investors and send a strong message to

other investors who consider Türkiye as an investment

destination, he added.

Gaunt stressed that Türkiye’s defense industry is at an

advantage now, thanks to its growth and the EU and
