Side Trip:
Tulip time has arrived!
Over the years, I’ve been exposed to
many opinions about Orange City’s Tulip
Festival, including the inevitable question to
the queen and her court regarding their favorite
things about the locally
famous Dutch event.
Generally, the an -
swers range from the
night show, to the food,
to the parade.
Absolutely — those
are all great answers.
The talent required to
produce a large-cast
musical is amazing from
a community of 6,500
people. The time commitment
for all involved
is impressive as well.
When it comes to Dutch food, well, you
can’t go wrong. Saucijsjes (a version of pig in a
blanket — sausage wrapped in pastry) are tasty
and lend themselves to street dining. Dutch letters
with their yummy almond filling are a top
choice, too.
Everyone loves a parade, especially one with
plenty of marching bands. The Orange City
Tulip Festival delivers on that front as well.
MOC-Floyd Valley High School has set the bar
high when it comes to marching bands, even
choosing the name “Pride of the Dutchmen”
for its ensemble.
Watching the parade is a great way to see the
variations of ethnic dress as well. I do not begin
to understand the nuances of the different
regions but appreciate the research that goes
into those creations.
But, honestly, don’t you think the star of the
show really should be the thousands and thousands
of colorful tulips that line the streets and
fill the parks? They do their best to bloom on
time and show off their beautiful colors.
While there are a few events May 12-14, the
bulk of the festivities are set for Thursday-
Saturday, May 15-17. Head on over to see for
yourself.

and animals
-t’s time again this month to practice your
ABCs.
The Dickinson County Nature Center
is helping tots learn their letters with their
Nature Tots series. The theme for this year
is “Animals ABCs.” Next up on the alphabet
journey is I and L.
The next class will take place on
Wednesday, May 14.
The children will be studying ivory cone
snails and jellyfish at the next Nature Tots
event.
The Nature Tots program is aimed at
children ages 2-5 with an adult chaperone
and takes place the second Wednesday
each month at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
The event is free and registration is encouraged
and can be done online at www.dickinsoncountyconservationboard.com.
Learning more about animals that live
far, far away from the state of Iowa will be a
fun experience for all who attend.
“Young explorers (ages 2-5) with a
chaperone can learn their nature ABCs
at the Dickinson County Nature Center.
This month, we are exploring the letters “I”
and “J” for Ivory Cone Snail and Jellyfish,”
according to Amy Heibult, the community
relations coordinator for the Dickinson
County Conservation Board. “Attendees
will explore ocean animals with waterbased
sensory play, make a beaded jellyfish,
match seashell shapes, and balance
while riding the waves to get to the correct
letter!”
This event will give the children and
adult who attend experiences to explore all
their senses.
“We love to have activities that utilize
sensory-based learning about nature with
foundational reading concepts,” Heibult
said. “Whether they’re navigating waves
or discovering creatures of the deep, kids
will be fully immersed in sensory fun while
strengthening letter recognition and coordination.”
Head to the nature center to learn all
about animals and the ABCs. F

Orange City Tulip Festival Queen looks
forward to celebrating Dutch heritage
KATE HARLOW | STAFF WRITER
Jaelye
-++$
Woudstra
+lizabeth Top Swets was the very first
Orange City Tulip Festival Queen
in 1937.
It’s a long and proud tradition with a
new queen and court serving as goodwill
ambassadors for the festival as well
as symbols over the course of the weekend.
This year’s Orange City Tulip Festival
Queen is Jaelye Woudstra and here’s a
little about her.
Q: Tell me a little about yourself.
A: I’m 18 years old. I’m a senior at Unity
Christian High School.
My parents are Brandon and Kyndara
Woudstra.
Q: Did you grow up in Orange City? If
so, what are some of your childhood
memories of Tulip Festival?
A: I have lived in Orange City since I
was two. Some of my memories of the
Tulip Festival as a young child are wearing
my blue and white Dutch costume,
smelling the tulips any chance I got, and
scrubbing the streets with my parents
and grandparents.
Q: How have you been involved with
the Tulip Festival in the past?
A: I have participated in street scrubbing,
Dutch Games and Dutch Dance, riding
floats, and marching in the OCCS band.
I was also able to be a Page under Queen
Ali Achterhof as a first-grader.
Q: What’s your favorite memory from
past Tulip Festivals?
A: One of my favorite memories of past
Tulip Festivals has been going to the
Night Show with my grandma every
year. My favorite so far has been “Mary
Poppins.”
Q: Why did you decide to run to be a
part of the Tulip Festival Court?
A: I had considered running for the
Tulip Court for a long time, mostly
due to the positive experience I had
as a Page when I was younger. I had
also heard many past court members
comment on the great memories and
relationships they gained from being
on the Tulip Court, which encouraged
me to participate as well. Finally, the
Tulip Court was a great way to develop
leadership and communication skills
and I enjoy opportunities like this that
help me grow.
Q: What are you most looking forward
to about being this year’s Queen?
A: I am most looking forward to the
relationships and impact I and my royal
court will have on those around us. We
have an incredible opportunity to serve
our community and bless those we
interact with, and I am so excited to see
how God uses our experiences for His
glory. F

,ace up the shoes and toe the starting line.
It’s time for the annual Tulip Festival Road
Race.
The long-standing event has been a staple during
the third week of May for more than four decades
and continues to gain fresh legs year after year.
This year’s event begins with the National Anthem
at 7:55 a.m. Sunday, May 18, with the race starting at
8:05 a.m. taking off from downtown Orange City.
All ages and abilities are welcome with age groups
ranging from 13 and under all the way up to 70-plus
with registration priced at $42 for the 5K or $37 for
the 1 mile fun walk.
Race organizer Jeff Joiner says they continue to
upgrade the race day experience and are looking
forward to a great number of participants this year.
“We’ve just continued to try to make little
improvements each year and the race continues
to grow. I think this year we’re probably approaching
between 350-400 participants,” Joiner said. “A
couple of the main things that have helped are
changing the route so it finishes right through the
tulips, through downtown, which helps it feel more
like part of the festival overall and some of the giveaways
that we do, like this year we have T-shirts for
participants and we do custom-made tulip finisher
medals, and there are goodies at the end, plus we’ve
got some stroopwafels.”
There is also a professional race photographer on
hand and participants can receive free photos via
Facebook after the race.
Joiner noted that the participants are truly spread
out through all the age categories and they see a
lot of returning runners as well as new faces each
year.
“It’s a great community event. Every year the Tulip
Festival race happens and people come back and
get to see their friends and it’s a good time,” Joiner
said. “I don’t know the exact numbers of local runners
and out of town runners but it’s an opportunity
for locals to get out and do something fun and
I think as a town it’s a way to get people to visit the
Tulip Festival that maybe wouldn’t otherwise and
then maybe they stick around or come back again to
see everything that is going on.” F

Tulip Festival Night Show presents
“The Wizard of Oz”
1here’s no place like home.
And in Orange City it’s a place that is
celebrated with the annual Tulip Festival,
which counts the Night Show as one of its most
time honored events dating back to 1950.
This year the show promises to be one of the
biggest productions yet, taking audiences on a
journey to visit “The Wizard of Oz.”
Tickets are $30-$45 with shows scheduled for
Saturday, May 10, and Monday-Saturday, May
12-17, at the Orange City Town Hall.
Co-directors Todd Vande Griend and Becky
Donahue are directing the show this year.
For Vande Griend it is his 25th Night Show,
and sixth time in the director’s chair, and he
knows one thing for sure – this year’s production
is a big one.
“In all aspects, from the costumes to the size
of the cast and the size of the orchestra, the
amount of sets and props, special effects, everything
is big, but that’s what makes it exciting and
I think that’s what people are going to be looking
for, especially when you do something as iconic
as ‘The Wizard of Oz’ that spans generations,”
Vande Griend said.
In addition to an audience that will surely
span generations there will be actors on stage
that span generations as well.
From junior high students to retirees in their
70s, there is a spot in the show for everyone.
It’s all part of creating an authentic experience.
“With ‘The Wizard of Oz’ you need to be in
Kansas and have things that look like Kansas.
If you’re in Munchkinland you have to have
bright, vibrant colors because when the audience
closes their eyes they can see those things.
They can see the Wicked Witch and they can see
Glenda and the Lion, the Tin Man and Scarecrow,
so we need to get as close to those types of
similarities as we can,” Vande Griend said.
The youngest cast members play dual roles,

some maybe even three or more, as munchkins,
flying monkeys, trees in the enchanted forest
and even the famous flowers in the poppy
scene.
It’s part of what makes the Night Show a full
community effort.
“There will be over 100 people working on
this production by the time we open on Saturday,”
Vande Griend said. “Over 100 people
just in this building. We have a lot of costume
changes and you just have to stay on the ball
and that keeps everybody energized, and keeps
it fresh and fun.”
It will certainly be fun for the audience as well.
whether they’re from Orange City and know the
actors playing their favorite characters, or outof-towners
visiting the festival and taking in the
show, everyone will have a good time following
the story down the yellow brick road.
“It’s a big production, that sums it up in a
couple words,” Vande Griend said. “I’ve been
doing this quite a while and this one is just
different. ‘Cinderella’ was big, ‘Beauty and the
Beast’ was big, and this one runs right up there
with those for sure, so the audience is certainly
in for a treat. F

Tulips
Talking
!he temperatures are rising.
It’s an early summer heat wave
and while that makes people want
to grab their swimsuits and head to the
beach it’s not great weather for some
other things.
Mainly, tulips.
The mild winter and hot weather is
combining to create a recipe for bad
news for the state of the tulips for the
annual Orange City Tulip Festival set to
take place this year from May 15-17.
We decided to talk to an expert.
Keri Drescher, who co-owns Tulip
Town Bulb Company in Orange City
with her husband, Dan, isn’t exactly
hopeful about Orange City being in full
bloom. The tulip forecast is not looking
good for this year’s Tulip Festival.
But on the upside, the tulips are looking
outstanding right now.
“I was just driving around today to
look at the tulips and they are coming in
to full bloom right now,” Keri said.
Whether or not they last until Tulip
Festival depends on the weather.
“If we still have a lot of color really
depends on the temperatures. If we
get a lot of hot days then they could be
done,” Keri said. “It all depends on the
heat and the sun.
Keri blames the mild winter weather
for the early bloom of the tulips this year.
“We really had a mild winter and

Will there be lots of blooms for the Tulip Festival?
when you have a mild winter those plants come up
earlier and they bloom earlier,” Keri said. “But I know
that we have some later bloomers here in our garden
so there will be some tulips to see during Tulip Festival.”
Every year, the city of Orange City plants around
35,000-40,000 tulip bulbs. There are also many private
residents and businesses that also plant tulips.
Tulip Town Bulb Company plants 3,000 tulips in a
number of varieties every year. Their yard features
75 small beds of tulips to display the couple of thousands
tulips they plant to showcase all of the different
varieties of tulips they sell.
This year they planted a number of new varieties
and Keri is especially excited about one in particular
that is sure to be a town favorite.
Last May it was announced that the Dutch Heritage
Boosters, an Orange City non-profit that focuses
on promoting the community’s Dutch heritage and
traditions, were going to be offering up a new variety
of tulip that is exclusive to Orange City.
“The Oranjestad DHB tulip is a never-before-seen
breed introduced exclusively to the United States
and Orange City. It is named in honor of Orange
City, and reflects the community’s love of tulips and
Dutch traditions,” according to the news release.
Tulip Town Bulb Comany are the exclusive
sellers of this bulb and the sale of these
particular tulips goes right back to the
Dutch Heritage Boosters.
“The Oranjestad is an 18-inch
tulip and it’s a really pretty yellow
with some orange tips. It’s
really beautiful,” Keri said.
Tulip Town Bulb Company
is currently open daily,
including during the Tulip
Festival. They also have a
website www.tuliptownbulbs.com
where people can also go to order
tulips.
Each year the Dreschers plant
either a few new varieties to see how
they grow or to bring back a few
from the past to feature.
And Keri, just like the rest
of us, is hoping that cooler
temperatures and rainy
days help preserve the
tulips just a little longer
so that when the
third weekend
of May rolls
i n , t h e r e
will be a
few tulip
blooms left
for the annual
Orange City
Tulip Festival.
Here’s hoping. F
