PRE-CONFERENCE SESSIONS

Wednesday, May 28, 2025

1:00 -2:30 P.M.

PRODUCTIVE CONFLICT: GROWING

BOARD CULTURE

Time: 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Location: Cypress 209A

Presenter(s):

• Alma Henry, Director of Leadership Services,

KASB

• Dr. Marcia Weseman

Join us for an interactive session exploring how

productive conflict can strengthen board culture

and drive meaningful outcomes. This session will

introduce practical strategies and tools to navigate

challenging conversations and enhance trust while

maintaining a focus on shared goals leading to better

outcomes for students.

Through a real-world case study from a Kansas

district, you’ll gain actionable insights into building a

culture where conflict becomes a catalyst for progress

rather than a barrier. Connect what we have learned

from neuroscience to the day-to-day realities of board

of education interactions.

Whether your board is addressing current challenges

or striving to elevate its effectiveness, this session will

demonstrate how conflict can be used as one of the

tools to improve board culture. Discover how healthy

board culture can lead to improved relationships,

better communication, and enhanced student

outcomes.

TYING IT ALL TOGETHER:

RESILIENCE, RELATIONSHIPS, AND

RETHINKING DISCIPLINE

Time: 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Location: Cypress 209 B

Presenter(s):

• Rebecca Lewis-Pankratz, Director of Student

Services/Resilience Team, ESSDACK

5

The post-pandemic classroom landscape has brought

new challenges, with increased behaviors surfacing,

particularly in elementary settings. While many

districts have invested in trauma-informed training,

educators are left asking, “Now what?” This session

provides practical next steps by unpacking the core

tenets of resilience—a science rooted in relationships

and biology—and exploring the pivotal challenge of

discipline versus punishment.

Participants will gain insights into approaches that

maintain relationships between students and staff,

even amidst big behaviors and misconduct. These

strategies focus on teaching respect, accountability,

and ways for students to repair harm and “clean up

their messes.” The session will also offer actionable

behavior hacks and preventative strategies to create

proactive and supportive environments.

Understanding the impact of trauma is just the

beginning. When we embrace a mindset shift—

thinking differently because we now know

differently—we unlock innovative ways to approach

the challenges we face in today’s classrooms. Join us

as we explore how to move from awareness to action,

fostering classrooms where students and staff thrive

together.

(AN ALTERNATIVE TO SUSPENSION)

REDUCING DISCIPLINE BY BUILDING

A CULTURE OF RESTORATIVE

PRACTICE

Time: 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Location: Redbud 210 A

Presenter(s):

• David DeLoach, Principal, Gertrude Walker

Elementary, USD 457

By implementing Restorative Discipline and

Positive Schoolwide Supports, we reduced major

discipline referrals by 87%, minor referrals by

65%, and increased positive referrals by 88% in an

elementary school building over a 2 year period.

#USAKS25

The presentation will be interactive with real case

scenarios, and address how we accomplished this.

Through Restorative Discipline teachers build the

foundation with classroom circles. This allows

students to feel safe holding themselves accountable

and repairing relationships when they make mistakes

and are in conflict, Smaller circles address the

conflict and reduce the likelihood of the negative

behavior occurring again. With PBS, we focus on

recognizing the positive vs. neg 7:1 to increase the

likelihood of expectations being followed and to

reduce the likelihood of negative behavior. This was

accomplished in a building with 85% free and reduced

lunch.

REWRITING YOUR ORGANIZATIONS

STORY

Time: 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Location: Redbud 210 B

Presenter(s):

• Carrie Yantzer, Leadership Development

Strategist, Capturing Kids’ Hearts

• Rose Jones

• Panel of District Leaders (Wichita, Goddard,

Haysville, Maize)

How do we empower our educators, students, and

communities to turn the rocks and obstacles that have

been holding them back into stepping stones to a

better future? During this session, we will discuss a

framework taken from the book “Your Third Story”,

written by Capturing Kids’ Hearts founder Flip

Flippen, to guide an organization when writing or

rewriting its story. We will be incorporating stories

from a panel of educators from around the state who

are bringing out the best in their leaders, teachers, and

students.

ESTABLISHING BEHAVIORAL THREAT

ASSESSMENT TEAMS IN SCHOOLS

Time: 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Location: Redbud 210 C

Presenter(s):

6

• Gregory M. Vecchi, Ph.D., Director of

Training, SafeDefend LLC

This presentation covers violence prevention best

practices for establishing behavioral threat assessment

teams in schools, including team structure and the

behavioral threat assessment process. It will also

include information on addressing online threats.

BUILDING CONNECTIONS: THE

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SCHOOL,

FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY

Time: 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Location: Birch 203

Presenter(s):

• Don Epps, Superintendent, Pleasanton USD

344

Establishing genuine connections with the families

and communities you serve is essential to achieving

the success you desire. While most educational leaders

agree that strong relationships are critical, building

and maintaining them often proves more challenging

than expected. The key is ensuring that people feel

genuinely cared for by their school. But how do you

make that happen?

In this 90-minute interactive session, we’ll explore

proven strategies to foster meaningful connections

with your school’s community. Participants will

gain actionable insights and real-world examples to

develop engagement strategies they can implement

in their districts immediately. By building strong

relationships rooted in trust, you’ll create a school

culture that inspires and sustains success.

Join Don Epps to Chase Greatness—a collaborative

and engaging session designed to equip you with tools

to engage families, strengthen community bonds, and

have fun while doing it. Don’t miss this opportunity to

transform relationships and unlock your school’s full

potential!

EAGLE BALLROOM - 2:45-4:00 P.M. - WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 2025

Mark’s journey from a classically trained cellist to the first-call drummer for the world’s top

artists like P!NK, Billy Idol, Stevie Nicks, Foreigner, Sheryl Crow, Cher, and a host of other

world-class artists showcases the immense power of attitude, transformation, and the relentless

pursuit of excellence.

“I’ve learned about the importance of attitude as part of the touring family with these great

performers,” Mark says as he unpacks the secrets of rockstar performance. His presentations

translate lessons learned during his remarkable career into valuable tips for organizations,

teams, leaders, and those who want to be their absolute best.

With over 32 years of electrifying stages worldwide, he not only brings unparalleled energy

to music but also translates this dynamism into motivational speaking, where he becomes the

bridge between the pulsating heart of rock ‘n’ roll and transformative business and corporate

leadership. As a cancer survivor, Mark’s resilience and vitality infuse his keynotes, where he

shares the secrets of rockstar performance, emphasizing attitude’s role in driving extraordinary

outcomes.

His published works, including Conquering Life’s Stage Fright and The Attitude Equation,

extend his philosophy to all, laying out a blueprint for harnessing fear into confidence and

transforming attitude into action.

As a passionate educator and advocate, Mark’s dedication extends off-stage through his work

with Create Now! and the Teenage Cancer Trust, showcasing his commitment to using art for

• Trish Adkins, National Academic Advisor,

Renaissance

• Jenifer Smith, Shannon Griesel

District leaders will share personal expertise and

experience in building and developing a data culture

using eduCLIMBER from Renaissance Learning. Join

us to hear how district leaders in Kansas have taken

a data-informed approach to accelerating learning,

supporting at-risk students, and meeting the needs of

every child.

See how these leaders are:

• Supporting all students by bringing together

academic, behavior, intervention, and attendance

data all in one place.

• Intensifying instruction and improving programs

through interactive visualizations and smart

workflow tools.

• Empowering teams to use data and take action

with meeting tools that drive student learning

forward.

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE:

ENABLING CONTEXTS FOR BETTER

STUDENT OUTCOMES

Time: 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.

Location: Pear 101B

Presenter(s):

• Abi Sanny, Implementation Coach, The Kansas

Learning Network

• Jessica Mossman

Is your system implementing evidence-based programs

or practices but still falling short of student outcome

goals? This session explores critical enabling contexts

that drive impactful, equitable, and sustainable

improvement efforts. Drawing on the research and

frameworks of the National Implementation Research

Network, participants will learn about key constructs

like Networks & Communication, Leadership, and

Monitoring & Feedback. These elements are essential

for the effective implementation of evidence-based

programs and practices.

Through this session, educators will examine practical

implications for leaders and explore how these

contexts can improve equitable outcomes for all

students. By understanding and addressing enabling

contexts, participants will gain strategies to enhance

implementation efforts and achieve meaningful

improvements in student success.

• Jeremy Hey, Regional Sales Manager, Coryell

Roofing

• Kelly Coryell, Mindy Bruce, Michael Couch

There are MANY other less expensive options,

however, for your district’s long-term interest….a

Duro-Last option is simply the best out there. Placing

a quality roof protects you from frequent claims/

deductibles and protects your buildings best for both

the short and long-term. Our taxpayers understand that

an investment on a good roof is similar to investing in

a brick exterior of our buildings.

EMPOWERING K-12

ADMINISTRATORS WITH THE

WORKING GENIUS MODEL

Time: 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.

Location: Peach 201B

Presenter(s):

• Mark Chrislip, President, Plans for Good 2911

• Dr. Stu Moeckel, Superintendent, Eudora

USD 491

K-12 administrators navigate complex challenges

daily—leading teams, driving initiatives, and

ensuring student success. The Working Genius model,

developed by Patrick Lencioni, offers a powerful

framework to enhance team collaboration, decisionmaking,

and execution.

Unlike personality assessments, Working Genius is

a productivity tool that identifies how individuals

contribute to getting work done. By understanding

their strengths (Geniuses) and challenges

(Frustrations), administrators can:

• Optimize team roles for greater efficiency

• Improve meetings and decision-making by

leveraging diverse strengths

• Reduce burnout by aligning tasks with natural

abilities

• Enhance collaboration among district leaders,

school boards, and staff

USE OF BEHAVIOR THREAT

ASSESSMENTS TO PREVENT SCHOOL

VIOLENCE

Time: 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.

Location: Cherry 202A

Presenter(s):

• Tim Brant, Executive Director of Health,

Safety & Prevention Maize USD 266

A safe school climate leads to better learning

opportunities for everyone. Behavior threat

assessments are an integral element to prevent

violence in schools and provide an opportunity

for early intervention. A BTA is an evidencebased

systematic process to analyze and manage

potentially dangerous behavior that could lead to

violence. The goal with using a BTA is to intervene

early by recognizing behaviors and implement

measures to alleviate the threat. Through the use of

a multidisciplinary team, schools can implement

a BTA process that can help resolve conflicts and

prevent violence in schools. This presentation

will cover how to implement the process: who

should be on the multidisciplinary team, identifying

concerning behaviors, how to gather and document the

information, analyzing the seriousness of the threat,

and building an intervention plan. Early intervention

is crucial to preventing violence in schools. This

presentation will use some brief case studies of real

high profile school violence incidents.

This session will provide practical insights into

how Working Genius transforms leadership teams,

helping K-12 administrators build a culture of clarity,

momentum, and impact.

Discover how your district can harness this model to

work smarter, not harder—creating lasting success for

your schools and community.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP GROUPS

Time: 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.

Location: Oak 206

Presenter(s):

• Jerry Johnson, Principal, Holcomb High

School, USD 363

• Joe Coles, Coles Consulting

There are two main reasons that Holcomb High

School created Student Leadership Groups. We ask

students in every phase of their education to take

on leadership roles such as leading small groups

but rarely do we give the student leaders the tools

to be effective. Our student leadership groups were

designed so that students could receive the training

needed and put that training into action throughout

the year. The other main purpose or our student

leadership groups is to hear the voice of every student

through a student feedback loop. There are many

times as administration that we think we know what

motivates our students to put forth the effort needed

for our new initiatives to work. At HHS, most of the

time we were wrong. The student leadership groups

give us the feedback needed to consistently improve

our initiatives.

School leaders continually search for the “magic

on inner conditions.” In this presentation, Dr. Henry

and Mr. Hersh will explore how school leaders can

work-life balance. They will provide strategies

highlighted within the Light on Leadership app and

newsletter that offer busy school leaders the quick

As school leaders, we understand the vital importance

of students engaging in meaningful reading throughout

CURRENT STATE OF STUDENT LOANS

& FORGIVENESS OPPORTUNITIES

FOR EDUCATORS

Time: 12:45-1:45 p.m.

Location: Oak 206

Presenter(s):

• Landon Warmund, Certified Student Loan

Professional, Teacher With a Plan LLC

The current state of student loans and forgiveness

programs for educators presents both challenges

and opportunities. With over 45 million borrowers

in the U.S., student debt has become a significant

financial burden, particularly for educators who often

face lower salaries compared to other professions.

However, there are several federal programs aimed

at easing this burden, with Public Service Loan

Forgiveness (PSLF) & Teacher Loan Forgiveness

(TLF) being two of the most notable.

With the ongoing complexity of student loans,

it makes it even more and more important to

stay informed. Supreme court proceedings, new

administration changes, and several temporary

programs at risk, and long loan servicer call wait

times are just a few of the things current student loan

borrowers are having to deal with.

School district administrators play a critical role in

informing staff about these programs, ensuring they

understand eligibility requirements and the necessary

steps to take advantage of them. As loan forgiveness

programs evolve, staying up-to-date with policy

changes is crucial for educators seeking to alleviate

the financial stress of student loans.

HOW WILL WE HELP THESE KIDS?

• Carmen Zeisler, ESSDACK

In the 23/24 school year, our building was in a

constant state of overwhelm because we had students

who were displaying behaviors and needs beyond our

capacity. We needed to do something, so we began

searching for solutions.

Enter the RISE Program. R.I.S.E. stands for

Relationships, Instruction, Safety, and Emotional

Well-being and is designed to provide comprehensive

support to students struggling with behavioral

challenges in school. This program is an alternative

to out-of-school suspension. The RISE Program

aims to create a nurturing and conducive academic

and personal growth environment while promoting

accountability, belonging, and positive community

relationships. The RISE Program will integrate

Restorative Practices, including repairing harm work.

The emphasis of this program rests on teaching

students the strategies needed to be successful in the

classroom, as well as responsibility and accountability

to their school community.

Since beginning the program, we have seen incredible

success and are excited to share this solution with the

educational community.

TRUSTWILLING: USING DELEGATION

TO BUILD LEADERSHIP CAPACITY

Time: 12:45-1:45 p.m.

Location: Redbud 210A

Presenter(s):

• Dr. Todd Dain, Principal, Shawnee Mission

South High School, USD 512

Being TRUSTWILLING is a powerful aspect in

building a culture of trust. However, many leaders

struggle with this. No one likes to be micromanaged,

and yet, some leaders can’t seem to help themselves

- they have a difficult time relinquishing control.

Superintendents and Principals are often overachievers.

Most likely, YOU became a principal,

because you out-worked, out-hustled, and outstudied

your peers. You know how to get stuff done!

However, you can’t apply that same approach as a

leader. Leaders who are micromanagers want to do

ALL the interviews, lead every PD session, conduct

every discipline conference, hire every staff member,

run every PLC team meeting. The art of leadership

lies in your ability to get others to care as much (or

almost as much) as you do! In order to inspire your

team and build leadership capacity, you first must

be TRUSTWILLING! You have to be willing to

TRUST your people to do the job you hired them to

do, which will foster a shared ownership that builds

a positive school culture. Attendees will actively

participate in small group and shared discussion to

leverage introspection. You too can learn to apply the

DELEGATION TRIANGLE to get the best from your

team!

BEYOND EVALUATION: FOSTERING

SUPERINTENDENT GROWTH FOR A

THRIVING DISTRICT CULTURE

Time: 12:45-1:45 p.m.

Location: Redbud 210B

Presenter(s):

• Britton Hart, Assistant Executive Director of

Leadership Services, KASB

#USAKS25

Superintendent retention creates challenges for

positive school/district culture. Best practice

for superintendent evaluation by governing

boards is limited. Three state agencies join active

superintendents to discuss a meaningful approach to

superintendent evaluation. A strong district leadership

team allows the focus to be on the right things!

Student learning and teaching excellence thrive in

an environment where effective communication

and clear goals are in place. The evaluation tool and

process promote meaningful conversation aligning

board and district goals and the strategic plan to the

work of the superintendent. The process encourages

conversation among board members to reach a

consensus and provide feedback to the superintendent

on communication, leadership, and allocation of

resources. Evidence and artifacts guide performance

metrics, noting strengths, areas of growth, and specific

action steps. A leadership growth mindset achieves

results that contribute to a healthy culture.

EAGLE BALLROOM - 2:00-3:30 P.M. - THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2025

Coach Johnson was named Coach of the Year in 2006 by several Rochester-area organizations, and was also

presented with a National Sportsmanship Award. These honors brought to light an impressive body of work over

the past two decades. His career record is now 428-221, with divisional titles in 1996, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007,

2008, 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. He was also named All-Greater Rochester Coach of the Year in 2014

and 2015. In 2016 Coach Johnson was named Monroe County Coach of the Year as well as receiving the Class

A Section V Coach of the Year honors. Because he led his 2016 team to a 21-2 record, the team rose to Number

1 in New York State in Class A and he led the Trojans to a Number 1 Seed for the third consecutive season in

the Class A Section V Tournament where they made the Championship game for the fourth consecutive season.

He has had winning seasons in 22 of the last 23 years, finishing .500 the other year. In the last three seasons,

Coach has led the Trojans to a 66-5 record which included the team reaching the Class A State Championship

Game in 2015.

Magic was once again in the air in the 2009 season as Coach Johnson’s Greece Athena team rallied from

20 points down with a little more than a quarter to play to win its state-qualifier game. Perhaps not so

coincidentally, J-Mac was on the bench for that monumental victory as well: he returned to the Trojans as a

volunteer JV assistant coach, starting in 2008-2009. In 2012 Jason moved from JV to Varsity coaching and

helped the Trojans win three consecutive Section V Championships in 2013, 2014 and 2015. He and Coach

Johnson were also featured in a lengthy CBS Sports feature that aired during the 2009 Final Four.

Coach Johnson, who is a graduate of both SUNY-Cortland and SUNY-Brockport, lives in Greece with his

wife of 33 years, Pat, and their son Tyler, 25. Coach retired from his position as a physical education teacher at

Athena in 2014 after 33 years and in 2015 Coach completed his 20th and final season coaching basketball and is

looking forward to speaking full time to be able to educate and inspire more people.

Coach Johnson has rolled his accomplishments and experiences into two speaking presentations, “Dreams

Really Do Come True” and “Leadership Lessons from Half-Court”. Now that he has retired from full time

teaching, he will continue delivering these messages to various businesses, associations and educational

organizations around the country. Based on his years of experience, his speaking topics focus on concepts like

teamwork, goal setting leading by example. For instance, he likes to point out that J-Mac’s big night was made

possible by unselfish teammates who kept passing him the ball even though they hadn’t been instructed to do so.

He also notes how the game video captures Athena bench players going as wild as the crowd with every J-Mac

basket.
