from city waterways during the 

annual Mother of All Clean Ups 

event. 

In two hours on Saturday 

morning, volunteers filled 400 

bags and removed 200 large

Avon and Heathcote rivers, New 

Brighton beach, the estuary, and 

Lyttelton Harbour basin. Larger 

items found included car parts, 

bumpers, polystyrene, and a shopping 

trolley.

Rubbish collected on the day 

was disposed of by Citycare staff. 

Jenkins said the event was 

timed for Mothers Day weekend 

to “give Mother Nature a gift”. 

Volunteers were also dismayed 

by the amount of dog faeces found 

along the river and estuary edges. 

“Many were in plastic bags, 

which only adds to the problem,” 

Jenkins said.

disappointing, she was heartened 

by the huge turnout on Saturday.

Glow festival an enchanted playground 

A SELLOUT crowd of 11,000 


packed Hororata Domain on 

Saturday for the Hororata Glow 

Festival. 

The festival featured 12 hot air 

balloons, the Marama Energy 

glow walk, live music, food trucks 

and free children’s entertainment, 

including The Wonky Donkey 

author and musician Craig Smith. 

The hot air balloons, which 

glowed in unison and were set to 

music, included Owlbert – an owlshaped 

hot air balloon from the 

United States. 

The festival was organised by 

the Hororata Community Trust 

in association with Ballooning 

Canterbury. 

Said event Manager Cindy 

Driscoll: “This festival is about so 

much more than entertainment. 

“It’s about building community 

pride, celebrating our rural way of 

life, and giving people something 

magical to be part of right here in 

the heart of Selwyn.” 

Driscoll said more than 130 

volunteers were involved in 

bringing the festival to life. 

“What many don’t see is the 

week-long effort behind the scenes. 

We host balloon crews from around 

New Zealand and the world. It takes 

a huge volunteer effort.” 

The festival is a key initiative of 

the community trust and raises 

funds for projects like rebuilding 

the historic Hororata Hall. 

The biennial event will return 

in 2027.

Skies alive with seasonal bird movements 

AS The THE Star, SEASONS May 15, 2025 shift, 

wildlife migrations are under 

way across the city. 

In March, the godwits began 

their annual journey to Alaska, 

while many local waterbirds 

migrated to Australia and the 

North Island. 

Land birds are also on 

the move, with fantails now 

appearing more frequently 

across the city. Bellbirds, grey 

warblers, and finches are 

becoming more visible during 

the cooler months. 

One surprising 

migratory 

species is the 

familiar harrier 

hawk. 

While not 

often considered 

a migratory 

bird, many harriers 

shift to 

lowland and 

coastal areas 

during autumn and winter –

Andrew Crossland said autumn 

is when harriers are often 

spotted flying north over city 

suburbs or feeding on roadkill in 

rural areas. 

“They’re sometimes slow 

to react to approaching cars, 

especially young birds just a few 

months old,” he said.

Whether their seasonal movements 

count as true migration or 

simply post-breeding dispersal 

is still debated among ornithologists. 

However, sightings of harriers 

flying along the northern 

Canterbury and Marlborough 

coasts – and crossing Cook Strait 

– suggest a migration pattern. 

“Council park rangers have, 

over many years, documented 

harrier numbers doubling along 

Kaitorete Spit and around the 

Avon-Heathcote Estuary/Ihutai, 

with a dominant autumn northward 

movement of harriers over 

Gebbies Pass, along the summit 

of the Port Hills and northwards 

along the city dunes and coastal 

wetlands,” Crossland said. 

Some harriers pause during 

migration to feed or gather at 

dusk in communal night roosts, 


where as many as 20 birds may 

settle for the night. 

“Only a few local roosts are 

known – at Travis Wetland, the 

Bromley oxidation ponds and at 

locations around Lake Ellesmere. 

“Protection measures are in 

place to ensure continued use 

of these night roosts, including 

predator control and provision 

of suitable vegetation,” 

Crossland said. 

“We would appreciate hearing 

from members of the public who 

may know of additional roosts 

on council park and reserve 

land so these sites can also be 

protected.”

MUSICIAN SAM Dunlay has 

released his first book, The 

Caterpillar, which is dedicated 

to the memory of a long-time 

friend and collaborator. 

Known by his stage name, 

And$um, Dunlay, 28, is an 

electronic hip-hop artist from 

Lyttelton. 

His sophomore album, Late 

Night Down Brougham, was featured 

in Rolling Stone Australia’s 

best new New Zealand music in 

2023. 

His first book is a collection 

of short stories and poetry dedicated 

to Louis Yeki, 25, who died 

suddenly in December. Yeki’s 

death is subject to a coroner’s 

inquest. 

“It was really tough, with the 

nature of his passing there was 

a lot of questions, no one really 

knew what was going on the first 

couple of days,” said Dunlay. 

“The main part is just shock 

and it’s the months following 

where you start to feel what 

you’re really feeling. 

“It’s just special to still be able 

to talk to him and keep his memory, 

he was an amazing musician 

and one of the best rappers in the 

city.” 

Dunlay and Yeki collaborated 

on the 2023 album, The Heroic 

Adventures of And$um & Lui Mill. 

The short story and poetry 

writing process acted as an outlet 

for Dunlay’s grief over his 

friend’s death. 

“It’s not always easy to directly 

talk about, so it was really nice to 

be able to get some of these feelings 

down and write them out. 

“For me it’s therapy to be able 

to get it all out,” he said. 

Dunlay has been making music 

for 10 years, but felt a shift in 

inspiration from writing songs to 

writing stories. 

The Caterpillar, the first story 

in the self-published collection, 

which the book is named after, 

he wrote 18 months ago. 

“It was a story I’d been thinking 

about writing for years,” he said. 

The caterpillar acts as a metaphor 

for Dunlay’s battle with 

chronic fatigue following Covid 

and how he has come out the 

other side transformed. 

Themes of isolation, selfreflection, 

and the small inconveniences 

that shape our lives are 

explored. 

“I draw a lot of inspiration 

from life’s everyday moments. I

enjoy stories that are universal 

and ordinary, but they mean a 

lot more than that. 

“It was a really fun process to 

write, I’d work sometimes for a 

month then I wouldn’t touch it 

for another three. Things in my 

life would change and it would 

reflect how I wanted to write,” 

he said. 

Dunlay found the writing process 

for the book differed from 

songwriting in its structure. 

“You’ve got a lot more room to 

flesh out an explore an idea.” 

The official book launch was 

on Sunday. 

“It was really nice to make it 

feel a bit more real and feel like it 

actually happened. 

“You never know if these 

things are going to see the light 

of day so it was a cool feeling,” 

he said.

Family’s links to wartime memento 


Thursday, May 8 was 

VE Day, marking the 

end of World War 2 in 

Europe. Dave Grantham 

reports on his family 

connection to the 

historic occasion 

ON VE DAY, the Supreme 

Headquarters Allied 

Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) 

issued a four-page pamphlet 

announcing the end of 

hostilities. Each page was written 

in a different language – English, 

German, French, and Polish 

– with slight variations in the 

content. 

One of those pamphlets now 

resides in the archives of the Air 

Force Museum in Wigram. 

How did the pamphlet end 

up there? My father, Elmer 

Grantham, an Englishman, 

came to New Zealand in August 

1935 for his ‘OE’ (overseas 

experience), sailing on the RMS 

Remuera. 

During the voyage, he met the 

Bain family – David, his wife 

Ella, and their 20-year-old son 

Stuart – who were returning 

to Christchurch after a trip to 

Europe. 

Dad struck up a close 

friendship with them and 

regarded the Bains as a second 

family during his time working 

for the YMCA in Christchurch.

siblings; the youngest was Peter. 

After four years in New 

Zealand and a year in 

Melbourne, dad returned to the 

UK in 1939 as war loomed. He 

joined the Royal Marines and 

took part in D-Day, eventually 

fighting through Belgium and 

the Netherlands into Germany. 

On May 8, VE Day, he 

was stationed in Selsingen, 

Germany, and 

travelled 60km 

to Wesermunde 

where he 

obtained a copy 

of the SHAEF 

pamphlet, 

‘Parachute 

Edition’.

Peter Bain in Christchurch, dad 

mailed a copy of the pamphlet 

to him. 

Many years later in 2001, 18 

years after dad died, I made 

contact with Peter to renew 

the family connection. He was 

farming at Willowby, near 

Ashburton. 

He told me about the SHAEF 

pamphlet he had donated to the 

Air Force Museum starnews.co.nz 

in 1998, and 

gave me a photocopy. 

Ever since moving to Lincoln 

four years ago, I’ve intended to 

ask the museum if I could see 

the original. 

With the 80th anniversary 

approaching, I contacted the 

research curator Simon Moody 

and we met on the anniversary 

last Thursday. 

He showed me the original of 

the ‘Parachute Edition’. It was 

an interesting feeling holding 

something dad had held 80 

years ago, in very different 

circumstances in the middle of 

war-torn Europe. 

And how did the war end for 

dad? After spending a month 

in Wesermunde and a couple of 

days near Hamburg, he spent 

four days on board a ship before 

eventually returning to England 

on June 13. 

He travelled to Fittleworth, 

West Sussex, where mum, Erica, 

and my three-year-old sister, 

Ruth, were living. 

There, they all met up with 

Jack Bain, an older brother of 

Peter who had been wounded 

and captured on Crete. He had 

spent the following three-and-a 

half years in detention as a 

prisoner of war. 

Dad was really keen to return 

to New Zealand to settle and, 

with another daughter in tow, 

Esther, the family arrived on the 

RMS Rangitata in August 1947.
