MORE THAN 700 volunteers
collected 2.6 tonnes of rubbish
from city waterways during the
annual Mother of All Clean Ups
event.
In two hours on Saturday
morning, volunteers filled 400
bags and removed 200 large
items from areas including the
Avon and Heathcote rivers, New
Brighton beach, the estuary, and
Lyttelton Harbour basin. Larger
items found included car parts,
bumpers, polystyrene, and a shopping
trolley.
Volunteers were also dismayed
by the amount of dog faeces found
along the river and estuary edges.
“Many The Star, were January in plastic 23, 2025 bags,
Cameron Bailey and the Harcourts Gold team made our home sale smooth,
professional, and stress-free!
The decision to downsize and sell our ‘forever’ home was a major life event.
However, the decision as to who would best be suited to undertake this sales task
was equally foreboding. Cameron Bailey and the team at Harcourts Gold for us
was an excellent decision. The efficient and effective sales process and system that
Cameron and his team diligently follow made this normally stressful period an
unbelievably stress-free event.
Skies alive with seasonal bird movements
15, 2025 starnews.co.nz
AS The THE Star, SEASONS May 15, 2025 shift,
wildlife migrations are under
way across the city.
In March, the godwits began
their annual journey to Alaska,
while many local waterbirds
migrated to Australia and the
North Island.
15, The 2025 Star, May 15, 2025
Land birds are also on
the move, with fantails now
appearing more frequently
across the city. Bellbirds, grey
warblers, and finches are
becoming more visible during
the cooler months.
15, The 2025 Star, May 15, 2025
One surprising
migratory
species is the
familiar harrier
hawk.
While not
often considered
a migratory
bird, many harriers
shift to
lowland and
coastal areas
during autumn and winter –
Andrew
Crossland
with significant numbers passing
through Christchurch.
City council parks ecologist
Andrew Crossland said autumn
is when harriers are often
spotted flying north over city
suburbs or feeding on roadkill in
rural areas.
“They’re sometimes slow
to react to approaching cars,
especially young birds just a few
months old,” he said.
Harriers are easily recognised
by the white patch of feathers on
SEASONAL SHIFT: Migrating harrier hawks and visiting fantails are just two of the many
native birds on the move across the city during autumn.
PHOTOS: CCC/DOC
the backs of their heads.
Whether their seasonal movements
count as true migration or
simply post-breeding dispersal
is still debated among ornithologists.
However, sightings of harriers
flying along the northern
Canterbury and Marlborough
coasts – and crossing Cook Strait
– suggest a migration pattern.
“Council park rangers have,
over many years, documented
harrier numbers doubling along
Kaitorete Spit and around the
Avon-Heathcote Estuary/Ihutai,
with a dominant autumn northward
movement of harriers over
Gebbies Pass, along the summit
of the Port Hills and northwards
along the city dunes and coastal
wetlands,” Crossland said.
Some harriers pause during
migration to feed or gather at
dusk in communal night roosts,
starnews.co.nz
starnews.co.nz starnews.co.nz
starnews.co.nz starnews.co.nz
where as many as 20 birds may
settle for the night.
“Only a few local roosts are
known – at Travis Wetland, the
Bromley oxidation ponds and at
locations around Lake Ellesmere.
“Protection measures are in
place to ensure continued use
of these night roosts, including
predator control and provision
of suitable vegetation,”
Crossland said.
“We would appreciate hearing
from members of the public who
may know of additional roosts
on council park and reserve
land so these sites can also be
protected.”
In a world often demanding bigger and
grander gestures in the name of customer
service, I’ve come to realise it’s the little
things that mean the most – and it’s those
little things that can easily be overlooked.
So, after several robust discussions with
friends who, like me, operate servicebased
businesses, we came up with some
of the simple elements that add to a
valuable client interaction.
And the word I’d like to emphasise is
simple, unlike some of the resources that
a quick Google search divulged, which
included ‘the 7 Cs of customer service’,
5 skills, 4 principles, 3 dimensions... it’s a
long list!
Rather than rely on what multiple experts
have had to say, my preference is to
share coal-face wisdoms and everyday
observations.
So, here’s what matters.
1. Speed. The world is a busy place. All
of us have multiple responsibilities and
getting the job – any job – done quickly
and efficiently is the most important thing
for many. I put my husband John in this
category. Often on a mission (in fact, in
our family it’s referred to as ‘Jobs On’), if
the person he’s dealing with can deliver
quick, efficient service, they not only have
his commitment, they have his long-term
loyalty.
2. Empathy. This looks like genuine
care. If dealing with different age groups,
it could mean taking more time with
elderly, helping busy parents with their
children as they try to juggle buying
decisions or, in my industry for example,
occupying children at open homes whilst
their parents look around. Those core
skills of listening and understanding
the clients’ needs are critical when it
comes to empathy, as is resolution of
problems that occur as a result of any
misunderstandings. That beautiful
sentiment, ‘treat others as you would
expect to be treated’, sits at the heart of
empathy and when consistently applied
it’s a winner.
3. Personalisation. In its simplest
manifestation, this could mean using
and remembering people’s names. Dale
Carnegie famously said, “A person’s name
is to that person the sweetest and most
important sound in any language.” And
he was right. I’ve always tried super hard
to remember names and it’s given me a lot
of pleasure seeing how that helps develop
rapport and connection when working
with people selling their homes, given the
stressful nature of the job at hand. If that
simple act is accompanied by a ready
smile, then the world always feels like a
better place.
Sadly, I’ve also encountered the opposite
approach in retail businesses both locally
and internationally. Phones, not people,
seemed the order of the day and it felt like
the commitment to catching up on social
media or texting was more important
than the client standing at the counter or
walking the aisles. All business interactions
are improved when clients, customers, or
guests feel like they are recognised and
valued. You will never create a memorable
moment if your customer walks out,
having waited far too long to be helped.
4. Can I also make a plea to business
owners to come out of their offices, or
from behind their desks or computers,
and truly engage with their customers?
I learnt this first-hand very early in my
business career and I have never forgotten
being greeted by the owner of a business
whilst I was buying their product. I felt
valued and appreciated, and that went a
long way to establishing long-term loyalty
and an ongoing brand commitment. I
realised then how important that action
was, and I endeavour to do it daily in my
own company.
All these factors are simple, able to be
managed by an individual or adopted by a
company. They could easily be positioned
at the heart of a client experience process
and if they’re augmented with strong
training and communications then you
have the very real possibility of a more
empowered and happier client, as well
as a successful business.
And to my mind that’s what any great
business not only wants but needs.
MUSICIAN SAM Dunlay has
released his first book, The
Caterpillar, which is dedicated
to the memory of a long-time
friend and collaborator.
Known by his stage name,
And$um, Dunlay, 28, is an
electronic hip-hop artist from
Lyttelton.
His sophomore album, Late
Night Down Brougham, was featured
in Rolling Stone Australia’s
best new New Zealand music in
2023.
His first book is a collection
of short stories and poetry dedicated
to Louis Yeki, 25, who died
suddenly in December. Yeki’s
death is subject to a coroner’s
inquest.
“It was really tough, with the
nature of his passing there was
a lot of questions, no one really
knew what was going on the first
couple of days,” said Dunlay.
“The main part is just shock
and it’s the months following
where you start to feel what
you’re really feeling.
“It’s just special to still be able
to talk to him and keep his memory,
he was an amazing musician
and one of the best rappers in the
city.”
Dunlay and Yeki collaborated
on the 2023 album, The Heroic
Adventures of And$um & Lui Mill.
The short story and poetry
writing process acted as an outlet
for Dunlay’s grief over his
friend’s death.
“It’s not always easy to directly
talk about, so it was really nice to
be able to get some of these feelings
down and write them out.
“For me it’s therapy to be able
to get it all out,” he said.
Dunlay has been making music
for 10 years, but felt a shift in
inspiration from writing songs to
writing stories.
The Caterpillar, the first story
in the self-published collection,
which the book is named after,
he wrote 18 months ago.
“It was a story I’d been thinking
about writing for years,” he said.
The caterpillar acts as a metaphor
for Dunlay’s battle with
chronic fatigue following Covid
and how he has come out the
other side transformed.
Themes of isolation, selfreflection,
and the small inconveniences
that shape our lives are
explored.
“I draw a lot of inspiration
from life’s everyday moments. I
and collaborators.
at Leslie’s Bookshop in
Lyttelton or by contacting
Dunlay via social media.
enjoy stories that are universal
and ordinary, but they mean a
lot more than that.
“It was a really fun process to
write, I’d work sometimes for a
month then I wouldn’t touch it
for another three. Things in my
life would change and it would
reflect how I wanted to write,”
he said.
Dunlay found the writing process
for the book differed from
songwriting in its structure.
“You’ve got a lot more room to
flesh out an explore an idea.”
The official book launch was
on Sunday.
“It was really nice to make it
feel a bit more real and feel like it
actually happened.
“You never know if these
things are going to see the light
of day so it was a cool feeling,”
he said.
