For 94 years, Berkeley College has remained true to its foundation

of career-focused business education, guiding students to become

confident and accomplished professionals.

Today, you become part of a proud and enduring legacy, joining

a distinguished global community of more than 68,000 Berkeley

College alumni who continue to make their mark around the world.

Now is your time to make your mark on the world.

Learning is a lifelong endeavor. Remember the relationships you

have built and the challenges you have overcome during your time

at Berkeley College. Let these experiences inspire you as you work to

create a brighter future for yourself and for those around you.

Faculty Speaker

Richard Schultz, PhD, was named Co-Chair, English, in September 2007. In this role, he

helped to review and maintain the English curriculum, hired new English professors and

monitored their performance, and staffed the composition and literature courses for all

Berkeley College locations in New Jersey.

Dr. Schultz joined Berkeley College in 2000 as a Professor, English. He was named

Chair of the Curriculum Committee in 2009.

Dr. Schultz has presented at literature conferences nationwide, including “The Film

Adaptations of The Scarlet Letter” at the Literature/Film Association Annual Conference

in October 2007 and “Plagiarism, Perplexity, and Publication: The Indian Captivity of

Fanny Kelly” at the American Literature Association Annual Conference in May 2006.

He also served as a presenter and panelist at the annual Conference of the Consortium for Critical Reading, Writing,

and Thinking hosted by Berkeley College.

Dr. Schultz received the Faculty of the Year Award for Curriculum from Berkeley College in 2015 and was named

Berkeley College Instructor of the Year in 2005.

Dr. Schultz holds a PhD from Stony Brook University, State University of New York, in Stony Brook, NY; and an AB

from Albright College in Reading, PA.

Alumni of the Year Award Recipient

Rui Oliveira, Class of 2009, has been named the 2025 Alum of the Year. Oliveira, an

accomplished global financial executive, serves as the CEO and Co-CIO of BFA Asset

Management and is the Founder of Academia Santa Catarina. His remarkable career and

dedication to philanthropy exemplify the values of Berkeley College alumni.

Oliveira earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from Berkeley

College’s New York City campus in 2009. Since then, he has built an illustrious career

in financial markets, with nearly two decades of experience, from early days at Citi

and Morgan Stanley, later being one of the founding members of the Angolan Stock

Exchange, to today managing multi-million dollar portfolios and executing transactions

exceeding $8 billion. As the CEO and Co-CIO of BFA Asset Management, Oliveira

oversees a $500 million portfolio focused on fixed income and alternative credit strategies. His work has been cited

or recognized on global platforms such as Bloomberg, CNBC Africa, AFSIC, the African Private Capital Association

(AVCA), and the University of Oxford’s Said Business School blogs.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Oliveira is a dedicated advocate for education and African economic

development. He serves as Chair of the Finance & Investment Committee for the Berkeley College Foundation Board

and has been an active member of the Berkeley College Alumni Association for over eight years. His commitment to

mentorship and financial literacy extends to his role as a mentor for The Founder Institute and the Oxford Business

Alumni Network. Other notable contributions include serving as an Independent Adviser to the Food and Agriculture

Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for the creation of the SADC Agriculture Development Fund, and serving

as a Board Member of the UK-Angola Chamber of Commerce.

Oliveira’s academic achievements include a Postgraduate Diploma in Strategy & Innovation from the University

of Oxford and an MSc in Finance from Imperial College London. He continues to expand his knowledge in asset

management and private markets through programs at EDHEC Business School and the Chartered Institute for

Securities & Investment.

Outstanding Student Award Recipients

Wanetta Vita is Berkeley College’s first Master of Science in Nursing graduate. A 14-year

veteran of the nursing profession, she has worked in home care, long-term acute

care, step-down care, cardiothoracic surgery, and the emergency room. As a Family

Nurse Practitioner, she is committed to advancing cardiovascular health and bridging

healthcare disparities in underserved communities.

Vita believes nursing is a true calling. Balancing graduate-level clinical rotations with

the responsibilities of motherhood and family life, she persevered through personal loss

and her own health concerns with a steadfast commitment to her education. A two-time

Berkeley College graduate, Vita also holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She is a

resident of Newton, NJ.

Emilia Hansson is an international student from Sweden, graduating with a Bachelor of

Business Administration in Management. From an early age, she dreamed of a life that

extended far beyond the borders of her home country, a future defined by bold choices,

dynamic experiences, and a path uniquely her own.

Driven by ambition, self-motivation, and a strong sense of purpose, Hansson has

consistently pursued her goals with unwavering determination. Her passion for learning

and natural athleticism propelled her into a professional soccer career. As a standout

player for one of Sweden’s top teams, she helped lead her team to a national victory,

earning a Swedish Championship title. Hansson’s achievement speaks to her exceptional

talent and discipline.

Beyond the field, Hansson’s excellence translated into the business world. As the top sales representative for Tommy

Hilfiger in Sweden, she quickly became a key contributor, demonstrating professionalism, drive, and an instinct

for success.

Hansson’s dedication to academics, athletics, and career advancement has been fueled by an insatiable hunger for

growth. That same ambition led her to New York City, where she chose to pursue her studies at Berkeley College,

another step forward on a journey defined by excellence and vision.

Student Speaker

Gaby Ramirez is graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Financial

Services. She was inspired to pursue higher education by two Berkeley College alumni –

her sister, who graduated in 2023, and her father, who graduated in 2009. As an Honors

Scholar, Ramirez completed research on social justice topics, including the harmful impacts

of the fast-fashion industry and the ramifications of excessive screen time in children.

Ramirez also was an engaged student on campus, completing community service projects

such as crocheting hats for newborns with the BerkeleyCares ® initiative and sharing her

college journey with prospective students. She is a resident of Passaic, NJ, and a graduate

of Passaic County Technical-Vocational Schools.

Ramirez advises incoming Berkeley College students to make the most of their college

experience. “Savor every moment, every milestone, and every achievement, whether big or small,” she said. “Earning a

degree isn’t just about gaining knowledge, it is also about growing as a person and becoming the best version of yourself.”

Academic Regalia and Symbols

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The academic regalia are a carryover from the medieval university to modern college life. The robes and colorful

hoods resemble those worn by scholars and churchmen as early as the 12th century. Then, as now, the garments

distinguished the wearer as a scholar, but they also had a practical element. The robes were warm, and the hoods

could be drawn up to protect the scholar against drafts in unheated buildings.

The gown distinguishes the Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees, and, at the same time, recognizes the

university that awarded the degree. The Associate’s gown is plain with open sleeves and is worn closed. The Bachelor’s

gown has pointed sleeves and is also worn closed. The Master’s gown has oblong sleeves cut away at the elbow, and the

Doctorate degree gown has bell-shaped sleeves with velvet stripes. The hood’s lining matches the color of the graduate’s

university, and the color of the border velvet indicates the special area of study (tan–Business; white–Arts and Letters;

purple–Law; lemon–Library; green–Medicine; light blue–Education; blue–Philosophy; gold–Science; and citron–Social

Work). Members of Berkeley’s Board of Trustees wear Berkeley College’s ceremonial regalia.

THE MACE

The mace, once a weapon of war, became a ceremonial standard in the 16th century. The

walnut-fluted mace has the college crest on both sides. Carried by the faculty marshal in the

academic procession, the mace is a symbol of authority.

The use of a mace during college graduation ceremonies combines symbolic communication

with the principle of vested authority at the most traditional and sacred of academic

celebrations. The mace adds meaning and dignity to the commencement ritual. It reminds

both participants and spectators that education is one of the most cherished attributes of a

free and democratic society.

Academic Regalia and Symbols

BERKELEY COLLEGE TASSEL

The tassel, which can be seen hanging from the mortarboard of a graduate’s cap bound together by a metal clip, is a traditional

aspect of commencement regalia. This item is significant because it serves as a symbol of academic accomplishment and rank.

During most ceremonies, a student’s tassel will be displayed on the right side of their cap prior to receiving their diploma. The

tassel is later moved to the left side of their cap to signify that one has graduated.

CORDS, STOLES, AND MEDALLIONS

Cords, stoles, and medallions are worn around the necks of graduates, signifying academic honors or other achievements.

Cords are made of braided nylon in a variety of colors. Stoles are panels of silk that can be embroidered with letters or symbols.

Medallions are made of metal or glass-like material and hang on colored ribbon.
