DELMARI The Star, January JANSE 23, Van 2025 Rensburg
has been living and breathing
baking for the past six months.
And it all paid off when she
won the Australasian baking
industry’s prestigious LA Judge
award, for baking apprentice of
the The year, Star, in January Sydney. 23, 2025
“You hope and you dream,
but to win it is insane,” the
22-year-old said.
“I just didn’t want to come last.
“You have really got to back
yourself, and when you come up
against the best of the best, it is
easy to start doubting yourself,
so you have to push yourself and
know it is time to step up.”
The competition, established in
1967, recognises Australasia’s top
bakers aged 25 and under.
The win means Van Rensburg
will head to Belgium next year for
a week to train with global baking
group Puratos Headquarters.
The three-day competition
tested every aspect of the
craft, from technical skills and
production efficiency to theory
and creativity.
“The judges were looking
at your point of difference,
creativity and how you handle
the challenges in a one-person
bakery, like time management
and using machinery that is not
common such as a tweedy mixer,
Eberhardt and Oshikiri,” Van
Rensburg said.
“They (the judges) were impressed
with how I spoke, how
I handled myself and helping
the other bakers if needed,” Van
Rensberg said.
by Jenny-May Clarkson
Outwardly successful, Jenny-May Clarkson
(ex Silver Fern, Breakfast television host since 2020) struggled with
Imposter Syndrome and never feeling ‘good enough’.
Her life was further shaken by the diagnosis of bowel cancer in her
older brother and his eventual death.
In the lead-up, she used advice
she received during the 2024
NZ Association of Bakers bread
baker of the year competition,
where she won the young bread
baker award and earned her spot
in Sydney.
“I remember Nathan Roberts
from Bakels saying that the winner
would have won before they
get to the competition because
it is all in the preparation – so I
took that on board and gone full
on with training.”
Van Rensburg paid tribute to
her New World Rolleston bakery
manager Janine Bell for her support.
“Janine, she has been amazing
and has played a massive role –
she would invite me round for
dinner to make sure I was eating
right – taking mentorship to
another level.”
Her win last year came with
a $15,000 research grant, which
Van Rensburg will put towards
studying brand management
in the United Kingdom and
marketing experience in the
Netherlands. She leaves for three
months on June 8.
An inspiring new memoir about redemption and second chances
from the former rugby league player by Jaye Pukepuke
A redemptive story about second chances. Jaye Pukepuke committed 15 armed
robberies before he was caught by police and sent to prison. He tells people that
while he spent almost six years inside, he served 16, because it took him another
decade simply to get his life back to the starting blocks. Prison also took away
his lifelong dream: to be a professional rugby league player in Australia’s NRL
competition. It was years before he was permitted to leave New Zealand’s shores.
Jaye had to choose a different path to the one he had longed for - one that would
take him on an unexpected journey to become a warrior of a different kind.
ANTIGUA ST, from Moorhouse
of Parakiore Recreation and
The upgrade will span the
block of the state-of-the-art
facility, which is due to open later
this year.
Although the upgrade has
been in planning since 2021,
construction is now scheduled to
run from this month through to
November.
The project includes:
• Full reconstruction of the
road and western footpath;
• Replacement of the temporary
cycle lanes with permanent,
separated cycleways in
both directions, connecting to
existing routes at each end;
• Renewal and enlargement
of the watermain to support
increasing demand, including
from Parakiore;
• Completion of streetscaping
to enhance the area
Said city council general manager
of city infrastructure Brent
Smith: “We’re upgrading the road
and water infrastructure at the
same time because the pipes were
due to be replaced, so it’s always
best to align works when we can.
“The watermain will be larger
compared to the existing pipes,
helping to meet increasing demand
from Parakiore.
“Likewise, the new cycleways
will make Parakiore easily
accessible for cyclists, while also
providing a permanent and safe
cycling connection for one of our
busiest cycleways, Quarryman’s
Trail, to the cycleways on St
Asaph St (eastbound) and Tuam
St (westbound),” Smith said.
“We’ll be gaining some road
space from Parakiore land on the
west side where the new footpath
will be constructed, and on-street
parking will be removed from
the east side. This also helps
with safety by providing clearer
sightlines from driveways.”
On-street parking will be
available on the west side of the
road.
A temporary northbound oneway
system will be in place from
this week until early November.
Castaway ‘buzzing’ at chance
Castaway could be on the verge of
their big break after being invited
to perform at the prestigious
NZ On Air Showcase, which
features four of the country’s
most promising up-and-coming
artists.
Held on June 26 in Auckland,
the showcase gives rising local
talent the chance to perform
original music in front of key
industry figures, ensuring they’re
on the radar when it comes time
to pitch new singles.
Castaway will be the only
South Island act taking part
in the event, joined by fellow
performers Frankie Venter, The
Boondocks, and Tusekah.
“We’re feeling excited and
ready to go up there and play
some original music, show them
what we’ve got,” said guitarist
and lead vocalist Jackson Stewart.
The invitation came in a phone
call from NZ On Air music
promoter Jeff Newton.
“He’s obviously been following
along and thinks we’re at a
point where we’re ready for this
opportunity and we jumped at it.
“The boys were buzzing, they
were super stoked,” Stewart said.
Turning a passion for music
like this are so meaningful,
Stewart said.
“It definitely lights a spark for us
track, it makes us want to keep
Over the years, the NZ On Air
including L.A.B, Drax Project,
Brooke Fraser and Auckland
alternative pop duo Balu
Brigada, who moved to New
York and now boast more than
2.5 million monthly listeners on
Spotify.
“It’s a massive opportunity that
could lead to bigger and better
things,” Stewart said.
Before heading to Auckland,
Castaway will play a hometown
show at Space Academy on June
19 to celebrate the completion
of their six-single EP, Nodule,
which they’ve been working on
over the past year-and-a-half.
It was capped off with the
release of Pretty Little Liar on
Friday, a pop-rock inspired track
detailing the pursuit of a toxic
relationship.
“It’s nice to be able to cap that
period we were in and start to
move on to the next thing,” said
vocalist and drummer Joseph
main amenity block that was lost
to fire gets under way.
Hann Construction Ltd has
started excavation and foundation
work on the amenities block.
City council manager activities
and events Colin Jacka said the
project also includes new toilets
and showers, a kitchen and dining
area, and a TV and games room.
The buildings will be connected
by covered walkways.
“We’re excited to see this project
come to life and restore a place
that is much loved by our community.
This rebuild is about enhancing
the camping experience
while reducing environmental
impact,” he said.
The new facilities will incorporate
solar power systems and
hot water heat pumps, helping
to lower emissions and improve
energy efficiency.
The holiday park is owned and
managed by the city council.
The upgrade is due to be
completed in time for the summer
holidays.
DISCOVERY: A giant springtail was found in Christchurch
on the first morning of the City Nature Challenge. It was
one of 25,322 observations made across the city and Banks
Peninsula during the challenge.
Giant springtail find puts Chch on map
IT WAS THE first morning
of the City Nature Challenge,
and Dr Frank Ashwood
was spending his day doing
macrophotography in Kennedy’s
Bush in the Port Hills.
After hours of overturning
decaying wood and discovering
native fungi and invertebrates,
Ashwood was getting ready to
call it a day.
“I turned over one last log,
and my heart soared at the
unmistakable sight of a giant
springtail,” Ashwood said.
“At only five millimetres long,
it was one of the tiniest I’ve
encountered –
but big things
come in small
packages, and
this observation
has finally put
Christchurch on
the map for giant
springtails.”
Ashwood said
the find is a sign
Frank
Ashwood
the bush is being well managed,
as the endemic invertebrates are
very sensitive to habitat loss and
disturbance.
“This is a very exciting discovery
and great news for the
biodiversity value of the Port
Hills area,” he said.
“I’ve been hoping to find giant
springtails around Christchurch
for a while now, having photographed
them in native bush all
around the South Island. But
according to the iNaturalist distribution
maps and the scientific
literature, they’ve never been
found anywhere near the city.”
The discovery was one of
the 25,322 observations made
across Christchurch and Banks
Peninsula throughout the City
Nature Challenge – a tally that
has increased compared to
last year’s 20,310.
The 10th annual event ran
from April 25-28 with a total of
3,310,131 observations from 669
cities across 62 countries.
City council community partnership
ranger Sarah Mankelow
said it was an amazing autumnal
weekend for exploring nature
in the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor.
“Our evening event at the Climate
Action Campus was a huge
success with families travelling
all the way from Timaru to attend,”
she said.
“Another highlight was the
spotlight walk to the river where
Jenny Bond from Te Tuna Toane
facilitated a close encounter with
tuna/eels.”
Saturday events included a
whānau fun day at Richmond
Community Garden and a science
exploration of Cockayne
Reserve, before finishing the four
days with a guided tour of the estuary
mudflats with city council
ecologist Andrew Crossland.
“It was another stellar weekend
with nature lovers from all across
the region – we’re incredibly
pleased with the final results,”
Mankelow said.
