has been living and breathing 

baking for the past six months. 

And The it Star, all January paid off 23, when 2025 she 

won the Australasian baking 

industry’s prestigious LA Judge 

award, for baking apprentice of 

the year, in Sydney. 

“You hope and you dream, 

but to win it is insane,” the 

22-year-old The Star, January said. 23, 2025 

“I just didn’t want to come last. 

“You have really got to back 

yourself, and when you come up 

against the best of the best, it is 

easy to start doubting yourself, 

so you have to push yourself and 

know it is time to step up.”

The competition, established in 

1967, recognises Australasia’s top 

bakers aged 25 and under. 

The win means Van Rensburg 

will head to Belgium next year for 

a week to train with global baking 

group Puratos Headquarters. 

The three-day competition 

tested every aspect of the 

craft, from technical skills and 

production efficiency to theory 

and creativity. 

“The judges were looking 

at your point of difference, 

creativity and how you handle 

the challenges in a one-person 

bakery, like time management 

and using machinery that is not 

common such as a tweedy mixer, 

Eberhardt and Oshikiri,” Van 

Rensburg said. 

“They (the judges) were impressed 

with how I spoke, how 

I handled myself and helping 

the other bakers if needed,” Van 

Rensberg said. 

In the lead-up, she used advice 

she received during the 2024 

NZ Association of Bakers bread 

baker of the year competition, 

where she won the young bread 

baker award and earned her spot 

in Sydney. 

“I remember Nathan Roberts 

from Bakels saying that the winner 

would have won before they 

get to the competition because 

it is all in the preparation – so I 

took that on board and gone full 

on with training.” 

Van Rensburg paid tribute to 

her New World Rolleston bakery 

manager Janine Bell for her support. 

“Janine, she has been amazing 

and has played a massive role – 

she would invite me round for 

dinner to make sure I was eating 

right – taking mentorship to 

another level.”

Julia was a motorcyclist, wrote 

poetry, spoke three languages 

fluently, and was incredibly 

social. 

“She was a girl boss,” McHaffie 

said. 

But her mother’s ‘highs’ were 

often met with intense lows. 

“Some of her lows would go 

on for a long, long time and she 

didn’t even feel well enough to 

get out of bed, or have a visitor, 

or eat. 

“Sometimes it got so bad she 

didn’t even know who I was, but 

I would look after her, make her 

food, and pay the bills..” 

How does a child cope when 

faced with raising a parent? 

McHaffie had three jobs by the 

time she was 15 – working at a 

dairy, a hair salon, and washing 

dishes at an Irish pub. Most 

mornings, she got up and made 

her mother tea before getting 

herself ready for school, where 

she said she was “horrifically 

bullied”. 

McHaffie was sent to 

Cholmondeley Children’s Centre 

in Governors Bay for respite 

care. It was here, every second 

weekend for five years, she could 

simply be a kid. 

“I was able to play, and I found 

my childhood there,” she said. 

“It was always safe.” 

On turning 12, McHaffie was 

no longer eligible for the respite 

care service but she returned to 

Cholmondeley for an extended 

period when she found herself 

homeless aged 14. She was given 

a place in the staff quarters until 

she found somewhere else to 

stay. 

When she was eighteen, 

McHaffie had her daughter, 

Maxine. 

Her mother died just four 

years later.

“She needed me to interpret 

the world for her. I provided 

continuity, consistency, peace and 

security,” McHaffie said.

Castaway ‘buzzing’ at chance 

to step into showcase spotlight

Castaway could be on the verge of 

their big break after being invited 

to perform at the prestigious 

NZ On Air Showcase, which 

features four of the country’s 

most promising up-and-coming 

artists. 

Held on June 26 in Auckland, 

the showcase gives rising local 

talent the chance to perform 

original music in front of key 

industry figures, ensuring they’re 

on the radar when it comes time 

to pitch new singles. 

Castaway will be the only 

South Island act taking part 

in the event, joined by fellow 

performers Frankie Venter, The 

Boondocks, and Tusekah. 

“We’re feeling excited and 

ready to go up there and play 

some original music, show them 

what we’ve got,” said guitarist 

and lead vocalist Jackson Stewart. 

The invitation came in a phone 

call from NZ On Air music 

promoter Jeff Newton. 

“He’s obviously been following 

along and thinks we’re at a 

point where we’re ready for this 

opportunity and we jumped at it. 

“The boys were buzzing, they 

were super stoked,” Stewart said.

Holiday Park, as a rebuild of the 

main amenity block that was lost 

to fire gets under way. 

Hann Construction Ltd has 

started excavation and foundation 

work on the amenities block.

project also includes new toilets 

and showers, a kitchen and dining 

area, and a TV and games room. 

The buildings will be connected 

by covered walkways. 

“We’re excited to see this project 

come to life and restore a place 

that is much loved by our community. 

This rebuild is about enhancing 

the camping experience 

while reducing environmental 

impact,” he said. 

The new facilities will incorporate 

solar power systems and 

hot water heat pumps, helping 

to lower emissions and improve 

energy efficiency. 

The holiday park is owned and 

managed by the city council. 

The upgrade is due to be 

completed in time for the summer 

holidays.
