THERE ARE not many
relationships more special than
between man and dog.
So when Max spotted rabbits
while out for a walk about
7am in Barnett Park, Redcliffs,
last week with owner Robert
Jiang, he did what dogs do – he
chased them.
But this time Max didn’t
come back.
“It was still dark, I tried to
find him but I couldn’t,” said
Jiang. Max didn’t respond to
shouts to his name.
Concern turned to worry,
and then stress as the hours
ticked by. There was no sign of
Max. Jiang feared the worst:
His beloved companion he and
his family had taken in four
years ago was gone.
Jiang searched relentlessly in
Tsunami
warning
sirens
could be
reduced
• By Jack Ward
A MAJOR shake-up looms for
the tsunami warning system after
testing failed.
There are concerns the siren
network along Canterbury
beaches is unfit for purpose as a
primary emergency mechanism
due to its age and outdated technology.
A scheduled testing of 45 tsunami
sirens between Brooklands
and Taylors Mistake failed in April
when the sole operator of the technology,
based in Auckland, was
dealing with a car accident outside
their house at the time the sirens
were scheduled to go off.
The current multi-modal warning
system incorporates emergency
mobile alerts (EMAs), radio
broadcasts, emergency services,
traditional and social media, and
sirens.
There is a proposal to reduce
the 45 sirens to about 10 located
at specific points where the efficiency
of alerting systems such
as EMAs may be reduced. It will
be discussed by the city council
on June 10.
Locations of the 10 sirens may
include areas where people are
less likely to have cell phones.
Sumner Community
Residents’ Association chair
Andrea Davis and New
Brighton Residents Association
spokesperson Brian Donovan
are welcoming the proposed
changes. They say reliance on the
current manual system for the
sirens was flawed.
Said Davis: “It (siren test
failure) highlighted the fact the
system is not automated. From
our point of view, a foolproof
automated system is what is
needed.
“Quality over quantity, the
more people who are prepared
the better – you have a text and a
siren, there is no indecision.”
Said Donovan: “You cannot
rely on one system, our view is a
multi-functional response is best
and this is along the right lines.
“Find the most effective way to
alert people in a combined fashion
which is the tsunami alarm
going off and the cellphone buzz.
“As long as people know the
processes it will be effective,
last time was a bit of a wake-up
because it’s an awareness we have
to live with.
“Getting an effective alert system
is a good starting point and
other discussions will flow from
there,” he said.
The sirens were installed in
2012 and 2015 are coming to the
end of their operating life of 15
years, with upgrades planned in
2027 and 2030.
Coastal Ward city councillor
Celeste Donovan said the proposal
was a start but more detail
would be needed.
“It is a useful
starting point,
an introduction
to the key issues
and what will
be useful to understand
going
forward.
“Sirens are
proposed rates increase of
7.58%.
It comes after Christ Church
Cathedral Reinstatement Ltd,
the charitable company managing
the rebuild, decided last
year to mothball the project
indefinitely after the Government
turned down a request for
more taxpayer money.
CCRL has an $85m funding
shortfall to meet the forecast
earthquake-repair and restoration
cost of between $209m and
$219m.
The city council’s breakdown
of the submissions revealed
many believed the targeted rate
should never have been introduced
in the first place.
Submitters also said the
cathedral restoration should be
the responsibility of the Anglican
Church, not ratepayers.
Concerns were also raised
that the project had received
“significant public funding”
despite “a perceived lack of
public support” for it.
one tool, we need to look at the
bigger picture of where the sirens
are and why they are there and
how they will operate.”
She said the issues with the
sirens was known, but how the
new technology would look like
was not.
“Nationally we need to be
consistent, but be sure to cater
to what the local communities
need they are serving – what is
an emergency plan in Sumner
with the hill will be different
compared to open coastlines.
“Part of the puzzle is updating
the sirens.”
The sirens help provide an
early warning for distant-source
tsunamis, which could take more
than three hours to hit Christchurch’s
coastline.
Siren tests are done twice a
year at the start and end of daylight
savings to check the system
is functioning.
During a test, residents hear
a tone and the message: “This
is a test of the tsunami warning
sirens. Do not be alarmed. This is
only a test.”
Housing development to
A $40 million housing
development in New Brighton
is moving ahead after years
of delays and a change in
ownership. Originally planned
in 2021 for 76 homes, only 14
were completed at the former
Central New Brighton School
work stalled. Modus Group
Waimairi Beach between
• From page 1
Jiang posted a missing message
on Facebook about 5pm in the
hope someone had seen Max.
But unbeknown to him about
the same time a member of the
public had spotted a german
shepherd wandering in Barnett
Park and called 111. It was Max.
The Sumner Volunteer Fire
Brigade responded and began
scouring the park. Thirty
minutes later they found Max
sitting down on a track about
two thirds of the way up the
gully.
They gave him water, used
their climbing equipment as a
makeshift harness to walk him
down the track, and then took
back to the fire station.
Enter Kim Rowlands, wife of
station officer, Kevin Rowlands.
She saw the post from Jiang
on the Sumner community
Facebook page and alerted
her husband. Jiang was called
and told his dog was at the
station.
“I was very happy, it was quite
a big surprise. I appreciated
their help and thanked them for
their contribution, they are very
important to our community,” he
Four years ago, Jiang took in
Max “for a week” from a friend
who had been looking after
him after his previous owners
returned home overseas.
The dog was very aggressive
and had eye and skin problems.
But in the week he was with
Jiang, his behaviour improved
and he followed him wherever
he went. The dog also reminded
Jiang of a german shepherd he
had who was killed by a car in
2007 – his name was Max.
So Jiang decided to keep the
dog who needed a home, and
named him Max.
THE CONTROVERSIAL
Wheels to Wings cycleway has
attracted a large proportion of
submitters on the city council’s
draft annual plan.
Harewood Ward accounted
for 20% of all submissions, followed
by Papanui Ward with
9%.
City council staff said this was
largely due to the high-profile
nature of the cycleway project.
Installing traffic lights and
signalled pedestrian crossings
at the intersection of Harewood,
Breens and Gardiners Rds was
a prominent issue for the surrounding
community.
The intersection upgrade was
included in the cycleway project,
but was prioritised separately
after the broader project’s costs
ballooned to $28 million.
The upgrades were then
separated from the project in
December after a close 9-8 vote,
but funding for the intersection
upgrades will need to be
confirmed in the final plan next
month.
Council staff also attributed
the number of respondents to
a flyer drop-off organised by
Harewood Ward city councillor
Aaron Keown and Waimāero
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board chair Jason
Middlemiss, which asked residents
in the two wards to submit
on the plan.
The cycleway drew 369 submissions
and broad concern.
While only 7% explicitly opposed
it and 17% supported a
staged rollout, 67% called on the
council to consider alternative
options.
Other submissions suggested
the Christ Church Cathedral
levy should be paused.
Of the 485 submissions on
the levy, 78% said it should be
the council granting it
the $5m it has requested to build
a new facility for storing historic
aircraft.
Views were split on the city’s
cycle lanes. Forty-one submitters
opposed any reduction in spending,
while 40 wanted cuts.
Libraries, parks, and rubbish
services emerged as the most
valued services.
The city council’s call for costsaving
suggestions fell mostly
flat.
Of the 1048 total submissions,
only 154 people offered ideas for
reducing spending.
Council chief financial officer
Bede Carran said some of
the most common cost-saving
suggestions, such as reviewing
staff salaries and contractor
spending, were already routine
practice.
Submissions came mainly
from older residents, with 27%
aged 65 or over and 16% were 50
A third of submitters didn’t
provide their age.
City council
considers
new online
registry
• By Dylan Smits
INCREASED online transparency
for city council decisions and
voting records is being investigated.
A report highlighting the differences
in online transparency
between Christchurch and Wellington
city councils is being used as a
benchmark for possible changes.
Presented to city councillors
by staff on Monday, the report
highlighted Christchurch’s lack of
an online registry of key decisions,
their progress, and city councillors’
voting records.
Searching for decisions is also
limited on the city council website.
The report was requested by
city councillors in February after
a motion from Heathcote Ward
city councillor Sara Templeton,
seconded by Riccarton Ward city
councillor Tyla Harrison-Hunt.
Councillors resolved to get
another report on the cost of
developing a new online system to
host the new transparency tools,
and a timeline for implementation.
Costs are yet to be investigated
and funding for the project would
need to be approved in the next
annual plan or long term plan.
MASKED LOOTERS raided
the shelves of a Riccarton store
Police were notified about the
A woman waiting near the
MetroMart for her cafe shift
The masked figures had
they raided the shelves.
A police spokesperson told the
AN EMPTY section in Merivale
The 582sq m plot on Cox St attracted
12 registered bidders, six
of whom put their hands up at
Harcourts Holmwood’s auction
room last week.
The property was announced
on the market at $1.5m, and the
auction turned into a two-way
battle between a developer who
planned to build two high-end
homes on the site and a couple
who wanted to build their own
The new owners are downsizers
who had been unable to find
an existing house that met their
Harcourts
A past customer had started
The company’s bank account
was in overdraft at liquidation.
The report said the preferential
creditors of Inland Revenue
were estimated to be owed
$500,000 and $30,000 was
owed in staff wages and holiday
were out of pocket $500,000.
Among more than 30 unsecured
creditors were ACC, Auckland
Central Otago District Council,
Inland Revenue, Spark NZ and
building suppliers, service and
other firms.
Total funds in the report for
The liquidator estimated at this
stage there would be no funds
available to unsecured creditors.
However, this would depend
The liquidation was expected
Will giving up
coffee get you a
house deposit?
• By Susan Edmunds
IF YOU’VE been trying to save
for a house deposit, or otherwise
trying to get your financial life
in order, you might have heard
the advice: Give up the takeaway
coffee, cut back on the
avocado on toast and stop
brunching.
But is that really all it
takes to get to your goals?
RNZ crunched the
numbers and found that
giving up your daily coffee
habit could eventually get
you a house deposit – but it
might take 30 years.
These numbers aren’t intended
to be anything but a demonstration
of general principles because
they aren’t taking into account
inflation (the price of a cup of coffee
will increase over the years and
inflation will reduce the buying
power of your saved amount).
But if you currently buy a coffee
a day for $5.50 and decide to save
the money instead, you could save
$2007.50 a year.
If you could do that every
Liz Koh
year, with a 5% return each year,
you’d have $26,000 after 10
years, $69,000 after 20 years and
$138,000 after 30 years.
At the moment, a typical firsthome
deposit is about $140,000
(or roughly 25,450 coffees if you
paid $5.50 each).
If you were having
breakfast at a café once
a week and saving $20,
giving that up could save
$1040 a year or $70,777
after 30 years.
Enrich Retirement
founder Liz Koh said the
problem for many people
trying to save a deposit
over a long period of time was
house prices increased faster than
their savings.
“By the time you have spent a
few years accumulating the deposit,
houses may have tripled in
price. However, it is a still a good
idea to save and it’s an even better
idea to cut down your outgoings
so you can borrow more.”
She said while small savings
would make a difference, most
people needed to do something
“Part of the problem is firsthome
buyers seem to want to
buy their forever home from the
outset, and it’s not always practical
or affordable to do that.
“Investing in property is a great
way to make money, and a good
lesson to teach is leverage and how
you can make it work for you over
time to build wealth. It just requires
some smart thinking about
how to buy the first property.”
Dean Anderson, founder of
Hospitality chain takes over club
• By Dylan Smits
THE FINANCIALLY troubled
Lyttelton Club will be taken over
by the Armadillos restaurant
chain from August.
The 153-year-old club will
lease its Dublin St premises to
the South Island hospitality
chain, which has committed
to retaining all current staff.
Details on membership options
for existing club members are
expected to be
announced in the
coming months.
Under the new
arrangement,
the club will
operate as The
Lyttelton Tavern
and Armadillos
Lyttelton as part
of the South
Island-based chain.
Steve
Gallop
A meeting was held in March
to discuss future options for
the club after the governance
committee said it lacked enough
support from members and could
not remain open.
“Despite (our) best efforts,
there is not enough support
for the club to remain open.
We understand circumstances
can change, but the lack of
engagement and involvement
from the broader membership
base has ultimately led to this
NEW CHAPTER: The Lyttelton Club will be leased to the Armadillos restaurant chain from
August. The financially troubled club has suffered a declining membership and general
lack of support in recent years.
decision,” governance group
member Steve Gallop said in an
email to members in February.
Speaking to The Star this
week, Gallop said a “declining
and ageing membership”
meant leasing the building to
Armadillos was the best financial
option.
After The Star revealed in
February the club’s plans to
close, governance group member
Dwayne Pool said the original
email “said nothing about
the club closing or being in
financial difficulty” and claimed
the media misrepresented the
situation.
However, the email clearly
stated the club would be weighing
up options, but “either way, the
Lyttelton Club will close”.
It is not the first time the club
has experienced financial woes.
It came close to shutting in
December 2022 due to pandemicrelated
pressures and insurance
issues.
Leasing was a proposed option
in the March meeting along with
a full sale or turning the building
into a community centre.
Under the new arrangement,
some areas of the building, such
as its private function venue,
may stay under the operation of
the club but this has not yet been
determined, Gallop said.
The exact structure and future
of the club as an entity is also up
in the air and will be decided on
by members before the August
rebrand.
“We feel this is an exciting
new opportunity for Lyttelton
and it means
the building
will continue to
be used by the
community,”
Gallop said.
The venue will
be renovated and
will feature a new
menu. A new
patrons club will
also be launched,
Tony
Crosbie
offering benefits to long-time
members and newcomers alike,
with more details to come.
The venue will remain open
during the transition.
“We’re thrilled to be joining the
Lyttelton community,” said Tony
Crosbie, Armadillos Hospitality
Group managing director.
“This venue has a rich history
and loyal following, and we’re
committed to maintaining that
strong community feel while
giving the space some modern
touches.”
Companies fined over baker’s
arm loss in ‘horrific’ accident
• By Al Williams
A BAKER LOST half his arm
after he became stuck in a blocked
crumbing machine without an
operational shut-off sensor.
He was working night shift at
family business Baker Boys and
went to assist two colleagues before
matters took a horrible turn.
The victim was in another
room, weighing up ingredients
while his colleagues were mixing
and packing the machine.
As the machine became
blocked and required clearing,
one of them tried to free the
blockage by kicking it numerous
times.
When that failed, the victim
and another person stepped in
to assist.
They separated a screw conveyor
and crumbing machine,
and the victim then removed a
guard and began clearing the
blocked infeed with his hand.
The ingredients blocking the
crumbing machine obscured the
screw, which was still rotating.
As he was clearing the blockage,
his right hand was caught by
the rotating screw.
An ambulance was called,
and he was admitted to hospital,
where he underwent surgery.
Unfortunately, his hand could
not be reattached and half of his
forearm had to also be amputated.
Baker Boys and electrical
contractors Pye Electrical were
found responsible following an
investigation and have been sentenced
in the district court.
The summary of facts showed
Pye Electrical carried out weekly
electrical maintenance at the
Baker Boys facility and had
completed 2800 jobs for them
since 2007.
At the time of the incident,
the sensor showed signs of wear
and damage, and was not operational.
The safety relay had been
bridged out, allowing the
machine to run, while the guard
was found not to be compliant
as it would not prevent someone
reaching through into the screw
conveyor.
The sensor on the machine was
bypassed more than two years
before the August 2023 incident.
A Pye Electrical director carried
out the work in March 2021,
assuming Baker Boys was made
aware of the sensor bypass after
communicating with one of their
engineers.
A two-page invoice issued to
Baker Boys by Pye a few days
after stated the work had been
done and the invoice was paid.
Baker Boys contacted Work-
Safe on the day of the incident,
and inspectors attended the
scene and issued a non-disturbance
notice.
WorkSafe issued a shutdown
notice after a scene examination
the next day and a month later,
attended the scene with an engineering
expert.
The expert concluded it was
likely the bridging of the relay
contributed to the incident,
stating the lack of well-tried
safety principles such as having
no electrical protection for the
circuit, as well as the number of
parts by which failure could lead
to a dangerous state, resulted in
a performance level that did not
meet minimum requirements.
‘Workers should not be
suffering harm like this in
2025, and businesses must
manage their risks.’
– Darren Handforth
The expert found other issues
with the machine, including
a non-compliant guard, its
emergency stop design and its
location.
Baker Boys also engaged an
expert who concluded the design
of the safety architecture of the
control system did not follow basic
safety principles and as such,
the machine did not achieve even
the most basic level of safety
architecture.
Pye said it had taken several
NO SHUT-OFF SENSOR: The Baker Boys
premises in Wainoni where the accident
happened, and the guard the victim removed,
exposing his hand to the rotating auger screw.
remedial steps and made improvements
since the incident,
accepting that the work carried
out in March 2021 was not in accordance
with its standards.
The summary of facts said
the risk was an inadequately
guarded machine, including a
sensor that had been bypassed,
which exposed the victim to the
moving parts of the machine
when clearing a blockage.
Pye Electrical had failed to
ensure the bypass on the machine
was only temporary and to
ensure the bypass was communicated
effectively to Baker Boys.
Baker Boys failed to undertake
an adequate risk assessment to
identify risks associated with
the machine and to adequately
monitor the effectiveness of the
machine controls.
It also failed to ensure the machine
was adequately guarded,
monitor its compliance and
review the effectiveness of the
system of work for clearing
blockages.
As a result, Baker Boys
was found to have failed to
comply with its duty to ensure
reasonable health and safety
and exposed workers to a risk of
death or serious injury.
The business was fined $35,000
and told to pay $9290 in reparations
at the sentencing.
Pye Electrical was fined
$30,000 and told to pay $26,937
in reparations for putting Baker
Boys employees at risk from
work carried out as part of the
conduct of its business.
WorkSafe acting regional
manager Darren Handforth said
bypassing a safety sensor and not
reinstating it “is bad enough, but
for a worker to then lose
half their arm as a result is
horrific”.
“For its part, Baker Boys’ risk
assessment was inadequate, and
its machine guarding did not
meet standards.
“Workers should not be
suffering harm like this in 2025,
and businesses must manage
their risks.”
A GROWING number of
students experiencing mental
health issues and social anxiety
are enrolling in distance
education through Te Aho
o Te Kura Pounamu (Te
Kura), formerly known as the
Correspondence School.
In 2024, 30,981 students attended
the state school – a 32%
increase from 21,187 in 2018,
Newstalk ZB reported.
Students must meet Ministry
of Education eligibility criteria
to enrol. This includes those
with families living overseas,
students referred
due to wellbeing
or engagement
concerns, pregnant
or parenting
students, and elite
athletes.
About a third of
students enrolled
last year were children
in years 9-13.
Te Kura chief executive Te Rina
Leonard said the growth has been
mainly in this age group, as well
as young adults.
“A range of young people are
coming to us with a lot of complex
issues and needing a different
kind of way of engaging in their
learning,” she said.
“For some, it’s for a limited
amount of time, it might be for a
year. For others, they need to be
with us for a couple of years.”
Leonard said Te Kura is seeing
more students with mental health
needs than in previous years.
Many find it difficult to cope in
traditional classroom settings
and benefit from the flexibility of
online learning.
“So with the online aspect,
they’ve got far more flexibility,
but they also do have face-to-face
contact as well, which I think is
really important.”
health statistics are among the
worst in the developed world. A
recent UNICEF report found the
country has the highest youth suicide
rate among wealthy nations.
A 2023 Ministry of Health
survey revealed more than half
of New Zealanders aged 15-24
experience anxiety or depression.
Since 2016, the number of young
people reporting moderate to
high levels of psychological distress
has nearly doubled, Newstalk
ZB reported.
Leonard said the rise in Te Kura
enrolments has also been influenced
by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I think there’s some contribution
there because a lot of young
people and families started
seeing how learning can happen
online and not necessarily
always in the classroom.”
“Some young people, not all,
actually enjoyed that.”
Leonard said Te Kura is facing
challenges around resources,
like every other school in the
country.
“We could always do more
with more, but we need to do
well with what we have now.”
“We‘re partway through a
funding increase for at-risk
students that the Ministry of
Education kicked off a few years
ago, and we’re really seeing
the benefits of that,” she told
Newstalk ZB.
“Being able to have online
counsellors for our students,
having additional teacher aide
support, those things are making
a real difference to our students.”
The Ministry of Education said
the funding model for Te Kura
allows for growth fluctuation.
“(It) has its own funding
model, which is different from
other state schools in that it
receives bulk grant funding for
operational costs and teachers’
salaries,“ Ministry of Education
deputy secretary for the central
region Jocelyn Mikaere said.
“Te Kura’s bulk grant is
generated based on the number
of equivalent full-time students
enrolled.”
Leonard said the school is
focused on ensuring every
student receives the support they
need.
“Every student has a leading
adviser – one person they can
go to – and we are building a
counselling team.”
“Last week, we started a big
training exercise in terms of
youth mental health first aid, so
we are gearing up as much as we
can.”
63-Year-Old Finds Support.
Chasing after three German
Shepherds at sixty-three certainly
takes a lot of time and energy.
For Lavina, it’s part of her active
lifestyle, and she wouldn’t ever
want to give it up.
When Lavina’s doctor
asked her to describe her sleep
patterns, she described them as
“totally erratic.” Despite retiring,
Lavina found herself sleeping
only 2-4 hours a night. “Even
in retirement, my mind enters
what I call ‘overdrive’ mode,” she
explains.
Having found synthetic
prescribed drugs inconsistent,
addictive, and leaving her feeling
drowsy in the morning, Lavina
opted for a natural approach and
came across Koru Sleep at her
local pharmacy.
Lavina cautiously tried Koru
Sleep, unsure of what exactly to
expect from natural ingredients, but
lo and behold...
“It felt like my sleep was
induced naturally; there were no
sudden drop-offs into drowsiness,”
she says.
Not only did Koru Sleep
provide her with the peaceful rest
she longed for, but it also left her
feeling fresh in the morning. “I
never woke up feeling groggy. It
was very restful and good; it’s now
my go-to,” she added.
But the most striking change?
“My sleep has balanced itself out
now,” she reported with joy.
“I would highly recommend
Koru Sleep. I thought it was
brilliant, I really did.”
Recently Steve and myself were hugely fortunate
to attend the 2025 Royal Canin Conference in
Montpelier, France. I actually won my place 6 months
ago, when I entered a competition to write on a Royal
Despite traveling over 50+ hours to reach our
fantastic from start to finish. We met up with the
Royal Canin Australasia crew, and got acquainted.
A great bunch of people to spend the best part of a
the oldies of the group.
Day One was
Canin global
headquarters
and plant located
in Aimargues,
a town in the
South of France.
This site is the
company’s
central hub
for research,
development and
global operations.
Established
in 1968 by
veterinarian
Jean Cathary,
Royal Canin Headquarters
and Processing plant
Royal Canin (RC) has grown into a world leader in
pet nutrition, specialising in tailored diets for cats
and dogs. He started this journey with his own dog,
a German Shepherd with eczema, as he could see
as soon as prescribed medication ceased, the skin
disease reoccured. With this visionary act the Royal
Canin brand was born.
Gala dinner with the team from Australasia
We were taken on a tour through the plant and saw
the entire process of manufacturing and production
- a fastidious, accurate, organised, scientific process
making sure only the very BEST food is bagged up
ready for your pets consumption. I was blown away by
the research that goes into the food process. The best
part was seeing the research centre which houses the
dogs and cats of all breeds. Where they sleep, eat and
exercise with others is first class and all the animals
looked extremely happy and healthy.
The next two days
were spent in lecture
theatres - my happy
place. The focus on
the conference was
successful weight
loss programmes
for the obese pet
and nutrition in
diabetic patients.
Early desexing was
also discussed in
relation to weight
gain, behavioural and
medical issues.
There was a technology stream exploring Artifical
Intelligence in the veterinary world and possible
benefits. Positive communication and psychological
safety within vet clinic teams has huge flow on benefits
for a healthy practice and I was really interested in what
Generation Z require from veterinarians in the C21st.
Now I’ll share the fun facts I learnt
this week..
What NextGen expect from your
veterinary team
• Being on the social media platforms this generation
browse, namely Tik Tok and Instagram.
• For us to embrace digitisation and be open to their
suggestions on what
content they want to see
• They want “information”
about you, your services,
your team and what to
expect when they bring
their very special pet in for
a stay
• They want video and
photo updates and where
possible, video calls with
their pet to keep in touch
• TRUST is everything
So I guess McMaster &
Heap need to get on the
right social pages to connect with a hugely important
group of young newly devoted pet owners.
Weight management in Diabetic Cats
• Obese cats are 4x more likely to develop diabetes,
typically between 8-10 years of age.
• Medical management with insulin ALWAYS takes
priority.
• Weight management takes priority over therapeutic
diabetic diets. These cats MUST lose weight first, which
will lessen their insulin requirements possibly leading to
complete remission eventually.
• BUT when introducing a new diet you must consider
the cats appetite and whether it will accept a new food,
whether the cat is stable with its insulin
dose and whether the pet owner can
cope with another change to their cats
routine.
• If these diabetic cats are underweight
they need a high energy/protein diet
to get their body condition score up, a
recovery or growth diet
• We need to allow 10% of the cats diet
to “treats”, and we factor this into the
amount fed. Clients enjoy treating their
cats and rewards after a jab of insulin is
an important part off the process.
The debate of when to DESEX
your pet
PET OWNERS:
19% Use social media
e.g. TikTok or Instagram to
get information or advice
about nutrition and healthy
weight or obesity in pets.
VET PROFESSIONALS:
45% Believe that pet
owners underestimate the
risks associated with pets
being overweight or having
obesity.
Dogs seek
me out
• Not an easy one as there are pros and cons to early
desexing. A thorough discussion with your vet is
required so you make the best decision.
• Early desexing can certainly help with unwanted
behavioural issues such as dog aggressiveness,
roaming, increased libido, urine marking and biting.
• Large breed dogs should not be desexed until body
growth has been completed. Desexing later can reduce
the likelihood of orthopedic/neoplastic diseases,
obesity, urinary incontinence and some behavioural
issues.
• Prepuberal desexing should be avoided in dogs with
behavioural issues.
• Also early neutering in cats can affect height, muscle
mass and fat deposition. After 20 weeks of age, cats
eat more food, their demands are higher so this
drives obesity. There is no increased risks of cancer in
neutering cats young. Cats neutered early are deprived
of individual growth hormone which leads to a smaller
size and leaner muscle mass.
Artificial Intelligence is here for Veterinarians
• A new algorithm has been developed to predict the
risk of your cat becoming diabetic. It requires some of
your cats personal info (including breed, age, weight
and body condition score and 4 blood test values).
This gives a predictive index of whether your cat is
heading into a life of diabetes. This isn’t yet available
as still being worked on but could be an excellent
predictor for those “chonky” cats.
• Royal Canin has developed an AI weight management
app that we will be implementing. It recommends the
best foods to feed, daily amounts, costs per day and
how long it takes to loss the desired weight
Reading Pet food labels correctly
• Dogs & cats are carnivorous and thus require a high
protein diet, high fat and low carbohydrate diets
• Life-stage diets (Puppy, lactation, maintenance
and gestation) are important as they provide all the
nutrients needed at specific periods in a pets life.
Dogs and cats need between 43-45 essential nutrients
as they can’t process these themselves. Vitamin C is
an essential nutrient as it can’t be synthesised. Cats
also can’t make Taurine or Arachidonic acid so need
this supplied in the diet.
• Grain added to the food isn’t just a cheap filler - its
a source of energy, providing protein, EFA’s, linoleum
acid, niacin, folate etc
• Dogs are NOT susceptible to Celiac disease like
people so can eat wheat
• There is an association between DCM (Dilated
Cardiomyopathy) and unconventional diets containing
peas, lentils, other legume seeds and potatoes as
the main ingredients. This form of DCM causing heart
disease can’t be explained by taurine deficiency alone.
• BARF (raw food diets) are not straight forward
to feed. As well as considering the quality and
digestibility of ingredients, raw meat is often
contaminated with bacteria such as salmonella and
listeria which as well as causing gastroenteritis in your
pet, is also an issue for young children, the elderly
and compromised people. Many BARF diets are not
complete and balanced, compromising puppies and
kittens dietary health.
All in all a fabulous round the world holiday for
Steve and I. After our week of “learning”, we spent 8
days cycling 55kms a day in Puglia, Southern Italy (the
heel of Italy - highly recommended), then visited our
best friend in Germany where Steve helped out with
some tricky Ophthalmology cases, even
performing eye surgery on a German
Public Holiday. Our last stop was
Houston where we spent fun, happy
family times with our son Dylan and
Alex.
Many Thanks to UVG for sponsoring my week in
together and thought out conference. Now looking
forward to getting home and being with Macy, Atticus
‘Hospitality is about what’s in
your heart and giving to people’
• By Geoff Sloan
MARTIN JAMES has
volunteered at Ferrymead
Heritage Park for 46 years, and
reckons there is nowhere he
would rather be.
“This is such a big part of my
life, and some days it is my life
really. This is what I do.”
Dressed in full period costume,
James welcomes visitors to
the park’s historic 1865 Curragh
Cottage with a warm fire and
baking on a coal range stove.
“First and foremost, I’m here
for the guests at the park. That’s
what it’s about. If you’re not here
for guests, then there’s no point
being here,” he said.
The enthusiastic 61-year-old
has been president of Friends of
Ferrymead for 30 years, a society
dedicated to preserving and promoting
the history of the park.
The dedicated group of about
12 volunteers also maintains
five heritage buildings and their
contents.
“What we’ve created here is
really amazing,” James said.
A teacher for 40 years, James
said he was New Zealand’s first
male home economics teacher.
He now teaches part-time at
Chisnallwood Intermediate in
Avondale.
James also has a second parttime
job cooking for the Sisters
of Mercy at their convent in
the central city. He said these
give him lots of time for his
“full-time” volunteer job at Ferrymead.
“I wouldn’t want to be paid to
do this job at all, because then it
would just become like a normal
job.”
He said people would just
become numbers if he was on the
payroll.
“Volunteering gives me the
freedom to interact with visitors
for as long as I want, that’s the
most important thing.”
Until recently, James volunteered
at St Mary’s Catholic
Church, New Brighton, as well.
He was there for 22 years.
The New Brighton resident
said he got into volunteering
when he was a student at Aranui
High School. The founding
principal was also the founder of
Friends of Ferrymead. The then
15-year-old answered his school’s
call for volunteers to help out
at the park. James enjoyed it so
much he went back the following
weekend, then joined the society.
“The place was amazingly busy
in those days, we used to have
thousands for Easter,” he said.
James said one of the interesting
things about being a volunteer
was the variety of jobs they
get to do.
“I could be on the roof fixing
shingles, sweeping chimneys,
unclogging drains, painting or
wallpapering.”
But hospitality was his
real passion.
“Some people think hospitality
is about making a cup of tea or
using a coffee machine. That’s
not hospitality at all. Hospitality
is about what’s in your heart and
giving to people.”
When asked about his future
plans, James said: “I can’t ever
imagine not being here.”
He said there was a running
joke among the other volunteers
when visitors ask if any of the
houses have ghosts they reply
no – but when Martin James is
gone, his ghost will be keeping
an eye on things and sorting
people out.
James said he fully intends to be
at the park for as long as he can.
“By keeping places like this
going, you’re just preserving
a small part of yesteryear
for people. The past is really
important.”
Coastal Ward voters have an
easy decision to make.
You have two hardworking,
experienced elected members
standing for the ward. They have
built their impressive resumes
on years of personal involvement
and understand their ward.
Why would they choose one
voters elected (James Daniels),
who then quit, lumbering ratepayers
with a by-election cost of
$65,000. He sets a precedent –
unless he also pledges to return
that $65,000 to the ratepayers’
local governance fund, regardless
of whether he wins Lotto or
not if elected.
back the cost inflicted as a result
Southern motorway
Having just read the article on
raising the speed limit, I am absolutely
appalled and disgusted
that the younger people like the
one featured in the paper want to
increase the speed.
I am 62, still have my licence,
and am now afraid to drive on
the motorway. Those people who
want to drive faster are so crazy
that they want a death wish.
They are the ones that cause the
worst/tragic accidents in the first
place with their reckless driving.
In my view, lowering the speed
limit would be safer and better
driving. It may take longer to get
to the destination but you get
there in one piece. So no more
speeding!
High first five Sonny-Bill McAndrew.
What a talent Sonny-Bill
Christchurch Boys’ High School.
As stated in the article, CBHS
have a unbelievable history of
producing great 10s. Andrew
Merhtens, Aaron Mauger and
Dan Carter is quite a line-up.
Aaron Mauger was one of the
greats, primarily as a second five.
Dan Carter is often viewed
as the best where the All Blacks
are concerned. His record speaks
for itself. Andrew Mehrtens, also
a great in the AB’s 10 shirt.
But with Canterbury and the
Crusaders I would place Andrew
Mehrtens in the No 1 position.
His clutch kicks/plays are too
long to list for both teams. A
1994 winning goal in the Ranfurly
Shield game v Otago. Likewise
v Brumbies in 2000. The
conversion in the Super Rugby
final in Canberra. And another
In Brief
Highlights from the
week’s club sport
• New Brighton claimed the
Falton Shield with a 50-31 win
over seaside rivals Sumner in the
100th anniversary of the Battle of
the Beaches. The win means they
stay on top of the ladder, ahead of
Canterbury University on points
difference, with each team having
five wins apiece.
• Christchurch United moved
four points clear of Coastal Spirit
at the top of the Southern League
after beating Cashmere Technical
2-0 on Friday, with the top two set
to meet on Sunday. A win would
put United seven points clear.
• Halswell Hornets have moved
level with Linwood Keas at the
top of the CRL Premiership after
their 19-14 win on Saturday. They
travel to play Greymouth this
weekend, who are unbeaten at
home this year.
Munchers marking
major milestone
The Belfast “Munchers” social
rugby team will celebrate their
50th anniversary with a reunion
this weekend. About 260 current
and former players are expected
to attend the three-day event at
Belfast Rugby Club, running from
Friday to Sunday. Formed in 1975,
the Munchers are believed to be
Christchurch’s second-oldest social
team. Over the decades, they’ve
competed in various grades,
including division 3, presidents,
division 6, and division 4. They
currently play in division 3 again.
Four All Blacks have played for the
Munchers: Bill Bush, Kieran Kane,
Gary Seear, and Hud Rickit.
history at champs
Oceanside Jiu Jitsu has become the
first South Island school to win
the Top Team title at the national
championships in Auckland. The
Sydenham-based club topped
the leaderboard among 70 teams,
earning 23 gold medals, 10 silvers,
and six bronzes. Oceanside’s 45
athletes recorded an impressive
89 wins and 44 losses overall.
Co-founder and coach Hayden
Smith also celebrated a personal
milestone, claiming his fifth
national title, his first at black belt,
in the 68kg division.
our players to
Boys’ schools pitch plan for
breakaway first XV comp
• By Sam Coughlan
THE SCHOOLBOY rugby scene
in Canterbury could be in for a
major shake-up.
Boys’ schools across the South
Island are proposing a new first
XV competition that would bring
together teams from the Crusaders’
Miles Toyota Premiership
and the Highlanders’ Southern
Schools Rugby Championship.
However, under the current
proposal, co-educational schools
such as St Andrew’s College,
Rangiora High School and the
combined Selwyn Schools team
would be excluded.
In a statement to The Star,
the South Island Boys’ School
Principals stressed that no final
decisions had been made.
“These ideas are still in development,
and we are working
carefully to ensure they reflect the
values, needs, and aspirations of
all our school communities.”
The principals also said the
collaboration will not be limited
CHRISTCHURCH United is
one of four Kiwi clubs still in
the running to join the OFC
Professional League set to launch
next year.
The club is competing for a spot
alongside A-League sides Wellington
Phoenix and Auckland
FC, as well as a fourth bid from a
combined Auckland team led by
Auckland City chairperson Ivan
Vuksich.
If selected, the Phoenix and
Auckland FC teams would likely
be reserve sides with their top
teams to remain in the Australian
A-League.
HALSWELL HORNETS rugby
league hooker Antonio Lemalu
has been cleared of a biting charge
that saw him banned for 10 weeks.
Halswell appealed the ban to
the New Zealand Rugby League
saying the sentence was unfair
and there was little evidence to
prove it was Lemalu, beyond the
testimony of one person.
RUNAWAY: Bishop Neal streaks away to score for St Thomas
to sport – they are “exploring
initiatives that include the arts,
culture, sport, and professional
learning,” and that “a structured
one of several proposals under
consideration”.
St Thomas of Canterbury
February, has now been narrowed
to 13 teams across seven nations.
Eight teams will be selected for
the league with a maximum of
two from any given country.
Christchurch United general
manager Ryan Edwards said
it is time for Christchurch
to have professional football
representation.
“ We’re (the South Island)
one of the biggest islands in the
Oceania region that doesn’t have
professional football,” Edwards
said.
To move forward, United must
submit 41 separate documents
to the OFC by July 18. These
include coaching credentials,
staffing information and financial
records.
The incident was alleged to
have happened during a premiership
match against Greymouth
Greyhounds on April 12. Halswell
won 32-28. Halswelll meets the
‘Just a coach
trying to do
the best for
my fighters’
Holly Sullivan was one of the first female boxing
coaches in New Zealand when she began at
Woolston Boxing Club in 2007. Now 38, she’s head
trainer at the club, runs her own business, and
raises her two-year-old son Taimana with partner
and fellow coach Trevor Swainson. Sports reporter
Sam Coughlan caught up with her
HOLLY SULLIVAN didn’t set out
to break ground in boxing – she
simply followed a passion.
That passion has led to a number
of notable achievements; the
first Kiwi woman to earn international
coaching qualifications and
the only active female international
coach in the country.
It is also believed Sullivan was
the first female head boxing trainer
in Canterbury, , earning the
role at Woolston in 2009, aged 22.
“I never had any problems.
It really helped in such a maledominated
community to just be
treated as an equal. It was pretty
awesome.”
Her first overseas experience
came as a development coach for
the team that went to the Arafura
Games in Darwin in 2019.
At that tournament she cornered
for Auckland’s Siaki Tu,
who won super heavyweight gold,
as well as current New Zealand
U71kg champion Wendell Stanley,
also from Auckland.
“ To know that you cornered
someone that’s potentially going
to do some really cool things. It’s
cool, because I got to corner his
first international,” she said about
Stanley, who is a prospect for the
next Commonwealth Games in
Glasgow next year.
In 2022, Sullivan and Swainson
coached Woolston’s Hamuera
Tainui at the IBA Youth World
Boxing championships in La
Nucia, Spain.
Tainui lost in the first round by
split decision, but Sullivan said it
was the best she’d ever seen him
fight.
“ It was literally like two punches
that made the difference of the
whole fight, Hamz (Tainui) won
the first round easy. His opponent
won the second round and there
was literally nothing in the last.”
On the way home, a one-day
layover in London coincided with
Tyson Fury’s fight against Derek
Chisora at Tottenham Hotspur
Stadium.
“The atmosphere was crazy,”
she said.
“For our fighter too, it’s like, this
is what you can achieve. We could
see him looking up at the crowd
and all these people were there.”
They watched on as Fury won
by TKO in the 10th round.
Sullivan first stepped into the
ring in 2005, aged 18, looking for
something to do to keep fit after
falling out of love with football
– despite playing for Canterbury
and trialling for the national
team. A talented sportsperson,
she also represented Canterbury
at tennis.
“ I loved soccer, but it got to the
point where I dreaded it every day
because it felt like it was something
I had to go to, and it wasn’t a
want anymore,” she said.
NATIONAL HONOURS: Sullivan is the top female boxing coach
in the country.
“Even if they don’t learn
to love the sport, they
could become a better
human in or out of the
ring because of what
they’ve learned from the
sport.” – Holly Sullivan
She played social football for
a while, until a teammate introduced
her to boxing through her
husband’s gym. What started as
a fitness hobby soon became a
passion – and a quick end to her
football career.
“I literally quit soccer overnight,”
she said.
After a couple of years of fitness
training, Sullivan got a taste for
fighting while working as a ring
girl – when she was asked if she’d
try a kickboxing bout.
“The fight only lasted 40
seconds. The other girl didn’t want
to be in there. I was really mad – I
was like, ‘I trained so fricking
hard for this damn fight and you
don’t get back up’.”
Sullivan was keen to continue
fighting after experiencing the
thrill – and having moved into a
house two streets over from the
Woolston Boxing Club, it was a
logical choice.
“They took me in under their
wings,” she said.
She qualified for the 2007 national
championships in her first
year at Woolston but lost her first
bout. A series of shoulder injuries
followed, resulting in three surgeries
that sidelined her for long
periods.
“ I went through three shoulder
surgeries, so I was out for a while,”
she said.
“In one of my fights, I said to
my coach, ‘I can’t feel my left arm,
like it just popped out,’ and he was
like, ‘that’s all right, you’ve got
your right arm.’
“You know what, he was absolutely
right. And you just carry
on.”
While recovering, she began
coaching – a natural fit since she
FAMILY: Sullivan with partner Trevor Swainson and their son
Taimana. Sullivan and Swainson are both trainers at Woolston.
was already leading warm-ups
and helping others in the gym.
When then-head trainer Tom
Heath stepped down due to work
commitments, Sullivan took over.
It was at Woolston she met
Swainson, and the pair have been
together for five years. Their son
Taimana was born in 2023.
“ We did not see eye to eye for
the first, probably, half a decade
of knowing each other,” Sullivan
said.
“And we can both openly admit
that, but then things changed,
obviously now we have a child
together.”
As head trainer, she is technically
Swainson’s boss, but they
keep things professional.
“ If you came into Woolston,
you wouldn’t know. Our focus is
the team.”
She balances her role at the
gym – training three to four days
a week – with her full-time job as
director of The Mortgage Girls,
a company she co-founded with
Elyce Peters in 2016.
Motherhood added another
layer to her already packed life.
“I didn’t think it was gonna be
(tricky). I’m pretty stubborn. But
it’s definitely changed how quickly
I can get things done in the background,”
she said.
“Taimana still comes to boxing
once a week. Every Sunday he is
at the boxing gym, he’s hitting the
speed ball, he runs around and
watches sparring. He loves being
in the environment.”
While boxing remains “95%
male-dominated,” Sullivan doesn’t
see herself as a trailblazer.
“ That was a question I got asked
in my early days, but I’ve never
seen myself as a female in the
sport, just a coach trying to do the
best for my fighters,” she said.
“ I don’t feel like I was ever
treated any differently, my peers in
the boxing world, they treated me
like they would any other coach.”
Her long-term dream is to
coach at high-performance level.
“ Having one fighter with you
for like a month, it’s incredible
what you can do with one person.”
Still, she loves looking after
young trainees, especially those
willing to put in the hard yards,
regardless of natural ability.
“ You can’t underestimate
anyone that walks through your
gym,” Sullivan said.
“Whether they’re naturally
talented or the one that needs
to practice a lot more than the
others, you’ve got to give them all
time because that person could be
the one that shines at the end of
the day.
“Even if they don’t learn to love
the sport, they could become a
better human in or out of the ring
because of what they’ve learned
from the sport.”

Jolion hybrid: Budget charm, a little clunky
HAVAL, A sub-brand of Chinese
automotive giant GWM (Great
Wall Motors), was launched in
2014 to specialise in SUVs.
However, its early years were
marked by poor build quality
and patchy reliability.
To its credit, Haval has worked
hard to turn things around. The
brand is now gaining credibility,
thanks to a range of modern,
well-equipped, and affordable
vehicles.
One of these is the compact
Jolion urban SUV, priced from
$28,995. The five-model line-up
includes two petrol and three
hybrid variants. The rangetopping
Ultra Hybrid, priced at
$40,990, was supplied for this
road test.
For those looking for a more
affordable hybrid, the $34,990
model offers a well-appointed
entry point.
All hybrids come with an
impressive 8-year, unlimitedkilometre
battery warranty,
alongside a 7-year, unlimitedkilometre
vehicle warranty—
providing strong peace of mind.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
These generous warranties are
a genuine show of confidence in
the durability of Haval’s vehicles.
One of the Jolion’s closest
rivals is the new MG ZS
hybrid, also from a Chinese
manufacturer.
While it starts around $2000
more than the Jolion, it delivers
15kW more power and features
a fresh, ground-up design. MG
also benefits from greater brand
recognition and longer-standing
credibility in the new car market
– something that many buyers
are willing to pay extra for.
How these two models
perform in the battle for market
share in 2025 will be fascinating
to watch.
This latest update is a clever
refresh of the three-year-old
Jolion.
The petrol version gets a new
front grille and bumper with
black accents, and a revised rear
bumper for a more polished
look.
Inside, driver comfort has
improved with the addition of
a four-way adjustable steering
wheel, up from two-way.
The hybrid version receives a
more substantial upgrade. It’s
based on an entirely new model,
though it retains the same
platform and hybrid powertrain.
The redesign includes a
revamped exterior and the
addition of a more sophisticated
multi-link rear suspension.
While the Jolion looks pleasant
in a generic compact SUV way,
it’s visually outshone by its larger
and more stylish H6 sibling.
Performance-wise, the hybrid
is impressive.
Its 1.5-litre petrol-electric
powertrain delivers 140kW
and 375Nm of torque – easily
outpacing the 105kW petrol-only
version.
It’s zippy and fun to drive,
but not the smoothest operator.
Transitions between electric
and petrol power can be clunky
during urban driving, lacking
the seamless integration seen in
some competitors.
That said, the hybrid has plenty
of get-up-and-go for overtaking
and navigating traffic. It’s nimble
and responsive, offering a lively
drive.
On flatter urban roads, the
vehicle often runs purely on
electric power. But on inclines,
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality 6;
Comfort 6; Passenger and Load Space 7; Value for money: 8;
Styling 7; Safety – Five star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
the petrol engine kicks in
quickly.
Overall, it’s a solid compact
hybrid, offering excellent value
for money.
Inside, the Jolion stands out
for its spaciousness, comfortably
fitting four adults – and five on
shorter trips, if they don’t mind
getting cosy.
However, some may take issue
with the abundance of hard
plastics and synthetic leather,
and long-term durability could
be a concern.
On the tech front, the Jolion
punches above its weight. It
includes a 7-inch full-colour
digital cluster, a 10.25- or 12.3-
inch multimedia touchscreen,
Bluetooth hands-free
connectivity, smart keyless entry,
and push-button start.
Safety is another strong point.
The Jolion holds a 5-star ANCAP
crash rating under the stringent
2022 testing regime, thanks to
more than 100 active and passive
safety features.
These include driver
drowsiness detection, brake
override, secondary collision
mitigation, and automatic rear
cross-traffic braking.
Ride quality, however, is an
area where the Jolion lags behind
class leaders. Urban comfort can
be inconsistent, especially over
patchy or potholed roads.
Still, the hybrid’s extra weight
gives it a more planted feel, and
body roll is well-controlled, even
on undulating terrain.
Suspension noise is noticeable
at lower speeds, and the overall
ride could benefit from more
refinement. However, the
steering is responsive and wellweighted,
giving the driver good
confidence and control.
