DELMARI JANSE Van Rensburg
has been living and breathing
baking for the past six months.
And it all paid off when she
won the Australasian baking
industry’s prestigious LA Judge
award, for baking apprentice of
the year, in Sydney.
“You hope and you dream,
but to win it is insane,” the
22-year-old said.
“I just didn’t want to come last.
“You The Star, have January really 23, got 2025 to back
yourself, and when you come up
against the best of the best, it is
easy to start doubting yourself,
so you have to push yourself and
know it is time to step up.”
The competition, established in
1967, The recognises Star, January Australasia’s 23, 2025 top
bakers aged 25 and under.
The win means Van Rensburg
will head to Belgium next year for
a week to train with global baking
group Puratos Headquarters.
The three-day competition
tested every aspect of the
craft, from technical skills and
production efficiency to theory
and creativity.
“The judges were looking
at your point of difference,
creativity and how you handle
the challenges in a one-person
bakery, like time management
and using machinery that is not
common such as a tweedy mixer,
Eberhardt and Oshikiri,” Van
Rensburg said.
“They (the judges) were impressed
with how I spoke, how
I handled myself and helping
the other bakers if needed,” Van
Rensberg said.
In the lead-up, she used advice
she received during the 2024
NZ Association of Bakers bread
baker of the year competition,
where she won the young bread
baker award and earned her spot
in Sydney.
“I remember Nathan Roberts
from Bakels saying that the winner
would have won before they
get to the competition because
it is all in the preparation – so I
took that on board and gone full
on with training.”
Van Rensburg paid tribute to
her New World Rolleston bakery
manager Janine Bell for her support.
“Janine, she has been amazing
and has played a massive role –
she would invite me round for
dinner to make sure I was eating
right – taking mentorship to
another level.”
Van Rensburg will put towards
studying brand management
in the United Kingdom and
marketing experience in the
months on June 8.
a childhood of chaos
starnews.co.nz
It wasn’t until Maxine started
school and was clearly struggling
in the new environment, that
McHaffie realised her daughter
had autism.
“She needed me to interpret
the world for her. I provided
continuity, consistency, peace and
security,” McHaffie said.
In still living with her two
children – Maxine, now 24,
and Boston, age 12 – McHaffie
remains passionate about learning
and advocating for the needs of
children with autism.
Still, she said it is “quite terrifying
McHaffie credits herself for
having a lot of hope for the future,
and an ability to always see
circumstances as temporary, but
at times she felt her efforts weren’t
enough.
There have been moments, she
said, when she thought “it doesn’t
matter how hard I try or what I
do, things are still really, really
tough”.
When she has felt helpless in
her own life, helping others has
certainly helped McHaffie.
Over the years, she has run
school programmes, puppetry worked with the Red Cross, a young age, her life had afforded
ANTIGUA ST, from Moorhouse
Ave to St Asaph St, will get a
makeover ahead of the opening
of Parakiore Recreation and
Sport Centre.
The upgrade will span the
block of the state-of-the-art
facility, which is due to open later
this year.
Although the upgrade has
been in planning since 2021,
construction is now scheduled to
run from this month through to
November.
The project includes:
• Full reconstruction of the
road and western footpath;
• Replacement of the temporary
cycle lanes with permanent,
separated cycleways in
both directions, connecting to
existing routes at each end;
• Renewal and enlargement
of the watermain to support
increasing demand, including
from Parakiore;
• Completion of streetscaping
to enhance the area
Said city council general manager
of city infrastructure Brent
Smith: “We’re upgrading the road
and water infrastructure at the
same time because the pipes were
due to be replaced, so it’s always
best to align works when we can.
“The watermain will be larger
compared to the existing pipes,
helping to meet increasing demand
for water supply, including
from Parakiore.
makeover for Antigua St has
started and is scheduled
for completion in early
November. PHOTO: CCC
“Likewise, the new cycleways
will make Parakiore easily
accessible for cyclists, while also
providing a permanent and safe
cycling connection for one of our
busiest cycleways, Quarryman’s
Trail, to the cycleways on St
Asaph St (eastbound) and Tuam
St (westbound),” Smith said.
“We’ll be gaining some road
space from Parakiore land on the
west side where the new footpath
will be constructed, and on-street
parking will be removed from
the east side. This also helps
with safety by providing clearer
sightlines from driveways.”
On-street parking will be
available on the west side of the
road.
A temporary northbound oneway
system will be in place from
this week until early November.
