Discover Devon: England at Its Most Authentic Devon is England with its shoes off and the sun on its back. No gimmicks, no fuss – just moors, beaches, thatched cottages, sleepy pubs, and postcard-perfect lanes that deliver the real rural England. It’s a county of slow reveals: the Dart estuary wrapped in morning mist, a foxglove in a medieval hedge, a sheep blocking the road with zero apology. You’ll get drizzle, sunburn, and a battered sausage, all without trying too hard. Cream or jam first? Doesn’t matter. You’re in Devon. If you like pauses, footpaths, and herons rising out of ditches, you’ll love it here.

Devon is England with its tie
loosened, shoes off, and a biscuit in
one hand. It’s not trying to impress
you. It’s not chasing Michelin stars
or waving its heritage under your
nose. Devon is quietly confident, the
sort of place that knows it was
beautiful long before you turned up
with your camera and your sensible
walking shoes.
ere’s a stretch of road, just past
Honiton, where the landscape folds
itself into the kind of postcard
England that foreigners still believe
exists, all dappled lanes, sleepy pubs,
and cows that look as if they’ve been
commissioned by Visit Britain. And
unlike so many places that trade on
nostalgia, Devon actually delivers.
You get the beaches, the moors, the
drizzle, the sunburn, the battered
sausage, the
sudden rush of
affection for a
thatched roof,
and none of it
feels like it's
trying too hard.
is is a county of slow reveals.
Devon doesn’t lay itself out all at
once. It’s not Venice, strutting its
stuff the moment you step out of the
station. It’s more like the second
glass of wine, better than the first,
unexpectedly soothing, and slightly
addictive. e views, when they
come, are almost shy. e Dart
estuary, early morning,
wrapped in mist.
A foxglove nodding in a
hedge so thick it might be
medieval. A sheep standing in
the middle of the road, looking
at you as if to say: “Yes? And?”
ere is, inevitably, an argument
about cream and jam. If you care,
you’re already wrong. It doesn’t
matter which goes first. e
point is you’re in Devon, with a
scone in your hand, and the light
outside is that particular West
Country gold that makes even your
hire car look poetic.
Devon is not for the restless. It’s
not for those who need their
Instagram sunsets filtered and
their cappuccinos spelled
correctly.
It is, however, for those who like
pauses. Who appreciate the
eloquence of a well-worn footpath,
or the grace of a heron rising out of a
ditch.
Devon doesn’t shout. It barely
speaks above a murmur. But if you
listen, really listen, you’ll hear
something that
sounds a lot like
contentment.

Torquay with a Twist: Discovering the Devonshire and

Devonshire Hotel:

unhurried coffee and watch the

Evening Rituals and Comforts
When the day soens into

Coldharbour Mill: Bringing the past to life!
Coldharbour Mill is one of the UK’s oldest
working woollen mills. Set in the heart of the
Devon countryside and on the bank of the
River Culm, our industrial heritage site brings
to life the stories of the Industrial Revolution
and Textile production through the ages.
You can see a range of heritage machinery in
action, see us fire up their steam engines on
our event days or enjoy our wetland, wellbeing
and wildlife space as a chance to relax and
stroll in the beautiful Devon landscape.
ere has been a mill at Coldharbour,
Uffculme, since the time of the Domesday
Book, with the current woollen mill in
continuous production since 1797.
English Heritage described the mill as
“probably one of the best-preserved textile
mill complexes in the country. It retains the
full range of buildings and power system
features which characterised the development
of the 19th century textile mill with much of
the machinery that was used at the site in the
20th century.”
As well as exhibits and nationally significant
collections we have a great on-site café & shop
selling heritage made wools and textiles,
guided and self-guided group tours and we are
situated only 5 minutes from M5, Junction 27
– making Coldharbour Mill a great day out or

Tiverton castle \Marjorie Anne Howe
Visit one of Devon`s most
historic castles.
e first Castle built in 1106
on a defensive position high
above the River Exe at
Tiverton by order of Henry I
was a wooden motte and
bailey by Richard de Redvers.
e de Redvers became the
first Norman Earls of Devon.
When the line died out in
1293 they were succeeded as
Earls by the Courtenays, who
enlarged and rebuilt in stone.
In 1495 Princess Katherine
of York married William
Courtenay who became Earl
of Devon. She was the
daughter of Edward IV, and
aunt of Henry VIII.
Unfortunately this royal
marriage led to the eventual
downfall of the Courtenays
in that turbulent age. In
1645 the Castle was besieged
and captured by Sir Tom
Fairfax when a lucky shot hit
the drawbridge chain and the
Castle was slighted. Later
rebuilding was carried out by
the Carews and various other
owners. Nowadays the
Castle is a peaceful, private
house and the buildings,
furnishings and exhibits
reflect the colourful history
and development. With
continuing conservation in
the Castle and beautiful
walled gardens there is always
something new and
interesting to see.

Cavern to dramatic cliffs and
coves, it’s a haven for natural

Unique Experiences Await

is always a hit. In winter, it
becomes the magical Train of
Lights – a seasonal highlight
for visitors of all ages.

variety of year-round
attractions. Torre Abbey,
