EDITORIAL

Dear Readers,

Last year, as we celebrated UnitCargo’s 20th

anniversary, we held onto hope that the year

ahead would bring improvement. However,

the global economic outlook has continued

to deteriorate. In our September 2022 issue

of UnitCargo World, we offered what now

seems a prophetic warning: that despite our

strong business performance in 2022, a recession

could be looming.

That prediction has unfortunately materialised.

Today, uncertainty and scepticism are

firmly embedded in everyday business life.

The crisis is no longer a disruption – it has become

the norm. But rather than resist it, we

have embraced the situation, analysed our

strengths and weaknesses, and discovered

that it is in precisely such testing times that

our true potential emerges.

Through this process, we’ve identified five

key strengths that define us and drive our resilience:

1. Equity Strength

Thanks to a solid equity base, we can continue

to invest even during crises. This ability

ensures we not only remain stable but continue

to evolve.

2. Innovation

Under pressure, our company produces its

greatest innovations. Crises don’t halt our

progress – they fuel it.

3. Customer Loyalty

Our clients stand by us. In times of uncertainty,

they avoid risky changes – and we are

proud to be the trusted constant.

4. Connection

Being close to our customers and partners

is one of our founding principles. This closeness

is a pillar of our strength.

5. Team Cohesion

Challenging periods bring our management

and team closer together, reinforcing unity

and mutual support.

This ‚hand of strengths‘ allows us to look ahead

with confidence. We plan to grow and expand

our capacities – together with you. Let

us continue building the UnitCargo World,

side by side.

with orange regards,

Davor Sertić

stricter requirements. Non-compliance may

incur fines of up to €10,000.

Other Notes

Austria: The Lueg Bridge on the Brenner

motorway will be rebuilt between

2025 and 2027. During this time, traffic

will generally be reduced to a single

lane. On 15 days, a general HGV ban

will apply. Further information is available

at www.asfinag.at.

Tolls

EU-Wide:

Emission-free vehicles are

exempt from toll charges until

31 December 2025. From 1 January

2026, they will pay a 75%

reduced infrastructure toll rate,

plus charges for air pollution

and noise emissions.

Austria:

• All HGV categories are affected

by toll increases. Two-axle

lorries will see tolls rise by 7.25%

to 12.64%, three-axle by 7.42% to

12.40%, and vehicles with four or

more axles by 7.47% to 12.42%.

Even modern EURO 6 vehicles

are subject to this hike.

• An additional surcharge of up

to 25% per kilometre will apply

on the A13 Brenner and A12

Inntal motorways to help fund

the Brenner Base Tunnel.

Belgium:

• Flanders: Toll increase of over

7.7%.

• Brussels: Increase of over 2.9%.

1 April 2025, with a further 10%

rise scheduled for 1 September

2025.

Czech Republic:

• From 1 January 2025, tolls for

vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will

increase by around 5%.

• The electronic toll system will

be accessible at the new portal

address: myto.gov.cz.

Germany:

No changes announced.

Denmark:

From the beginning of the year,

Denmark exited the Eurovignette

system and introduced a distance-based

toll for HGVs. New

rates imply increases between

6% and 12%, depending on the

vehicle‘s weight class.

Italy:

Toll charges for motorways will

rise by an average of 1.8%.

Luxembourg:

Eurovignette tariffs were raised

by an average of 0.92% in 2025.

Netherlands:

The Eurovignette remains in

place for 2025, with a 1.9% tariff

increase. A distance-based HGV

toll is planned for mid-2026,

currently in testing phase.

Poland:

• The e-TOLL system fees were

increased by 2%, with some

segments like the A4 motorway

seeing hikes up to 4.78%.

• Since 1 November 2024, the

domestic road transport

surcharge rose from 11.32% to

14.94%. For international transport,

the surcharge increased

by 1.44% of the base freight

rate, with 40% of domestic

costs included in international

rates.

Sweden:

Eurovignette tariffs rose by 1.9%.

France:

Planned toll rate increase of

0.92%, depending on the motorway

operator.

Hungary:

Electronic toll charges are set

to rise by 3.4%.

HVO100:

The Green Diesel

of the Future?

© freepik

With climate change becoming increasingly urgent,

both industry and consumers are searching

for sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. One

promising solution is HVO100 – a synthetic diesel

fuel made from renewable raw materials with the

potential to significantly cut CO₂ emissions.

What is HVO100?

HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil. HVO100

refers to the purest form of this fuel, consisting of

100% hydrotreated vegetable oil. Unlike traditional

biodiesel, HVO100 is produced through a catalytic

reaction with hydrogen, resulting in a paraffinic fuel

that is chemically very similar to fossil diesel. This

similarity allows HVO100 to be used in many diesel

engines without any technical modifications.

Production and Raw Materials

HVO100 is produced by hydrotreating vegetable

oils or animal fats. During this process, unsaturated

fatty acids are converted into saturated hydrocarbons.

Common feedstocks include used cooking

oils, animal fats, and other biogenic waste materials.

Hydrogen is required for the process, and

ideally, it should come from renewable sources to

maintain a positive environmental balance.

Advantages of HVO100

• Reduced emissions: HVO100 can cut CO₂ emissions

by up to 90% compared to fossil diesel.

• Compatibility: Many modern diesel engines can

use HVO100 without any modifications.

• Cleaner combustion: With a high cetane number,

HVO100 ensures more efficient and cleaner burning.

• Storage stability: Unlike biodiesel, HVO100 is oxidation-stable

and has a longer shelf life.

Disadvantages and Challenges

• Limited availability: Currently not widely available

at fuel stations.

• Cost: Roughly 10 cents per litre more expensive

than fossil diesel.

• Feedstock origin: Sustainability depends heavily

on where and how the oils are sourced.

• Hydrogen sourcing: Only green hydrogen makes

the environmental balance truly positive.

Production Capacity and Labelling

Around 4 million tonnes of HVO are currently

produced worldwide each year. By 2030, this

figure is expected to rise to about 15.5 million

tonnes. In Germany, HVO100 is labelled at fuel

stations with the code “XTL” indicating a synthetic

fuel.

Risks and Environmental Aspects

Despite its advantages, HVO100 also carries some

risks. Growing demand may lead to the displacement

of agricultural land. Dependence on imports

and the use of non-renewable hydrogen can also

harm the overall environmental footprint.

Outlook

HVO100 has the potential to play a crucial role in

decarbonising transport. With growing production

and clear sustainability standards, it could become

a true gamechanger. Transparency throughout

the supply chain will be essential.

Conclusion

HVO100 is more than just an alternative diesel

– it’s a promising step toward climate-friendly

mobility. But to fully realise its potential, the fuel

must be produced sustainably, widely available,

and regulated with clear environmental standards.

UNITCARGO DESTINATION SUBJECT

Rzeszów –

Where the Past Whispers

and the Future Beckons

Sebastian Wójcik,

Branch Office Manager UC Poland

Tucked away in the south-eastern

corner of Poland lies Rzeszów – a

city that may not shout for attention,

but gently earns it. A place where medieval cobblestones

meet buzzing tech start-ups, where

castle walls tell tales of nobility and riverside

parks hum with the laughter of university students.

Rzeszów, quite simply, is a hidden gem –

and for those who know it, it’s much more than

just a dot on the map.

A Walk Through History

Rzeszów’s story begins in the Middle Ages, when

it was little more than a speck along a trade route

between Hungary and Poland. City rights came in

1354, courtesy of King Casimir the Great, and from

there, Rzeszów grew into a vibrant hub of trade,

military strength, and cultural life. Key players in

this growth were the Ligęza and Lubomirski families,

whose legacies can still be seen in the architectural

jewels they left behind – most notably, the

formidable Lubomirski Castle.

Beneath the Surface

The city’s market square, with its quaint town hall and

cobbled charm, might suggest you‘ve stepped into a

postcard – but its most fascinating feature lies below.

The Rzeszów Cellars, a labyrinthine underground route,

offer a thrilling glimpse into the city‘s past: a warren

of tunnels once used by merchants and mischief-makers

alike, now transformed into a must-see attraction

lit by stories, soundscapes, and atmosphere.

Modern Pulse, Historic Roots

Despite its age, Rzeszów is no museum piece. It’s a

thriving modern centre, fuelled by knowledge and

innovation. The Rzeszów University of Technology

stands out for its aerospace credentials, and the

city is the beating heart of Poland’s ‚Aviation Valley‘

– an industrial cluster that’s fast making waves

across Europe. It’s not only clever; it’s ambitious.

Living the Good Life

For all its high-tech buzz, Rzeszów knows how to

slow down. Along the banks of the Wisłok River,

life unfolds at a gentler pace: joggers, kayakers, families,

and festivals all converging in a space that

feels both lively and laid-back. Parks are plentiful

– from the peaceful Unity Park to leafy boulevards

– and the city planners have struck a rare balance

between growth and green.

Getting Around, Getting Inspired

The Rzeszów Communication Centre is a transport

hub with style – combining functionality with form,

making it easier than ever to explore the city or

head beyond. A recently renovated railway station

adds a touch of elegance to the daily commute.

Culture in Motion

The cultural life of Rzeszów punches well above

its weight. A packed calendar of events – including

the Carpathia Festival and European Culture Stadium

– brings music, theatre, and film from around

the globe. Meanwhile, the city’s Philharmonic,

theatres, and galleries ensure there‘s something

for every cultural appetite, whether you‘re after

Bach or avant-garde.

Lights, Water, Action!

Come sundown, one of Rzeszów’s most dazzling

features springs to life: the Multimedia Fountain.

Part art installation, part community magnet, it

blends water, light and sound into nightly spectacles

that stop passersby in their tracks and make

warm evenings unforgettable.

Young, Bright and Restless

Fuelled by its student population, Rzeszów crackles

with youthful energy. Cafés are busy, bars

buzz late into the night, and the food scene offers

both hearty Podkarpackie dishes and boundarypushing

plates for the curious palate.

Final Thought

Rzeszów may not have the scale of Warsaw or

Kraków, but perhaps that‘s its strength. It’s a city

that balances history and innovation, bustle and

calm, tradition and tomorrow. And for those who

give it a chance, it tends to leave a lasting mark. It

certainly did on me.

My name is Sebastian Wójcik, and I’ve

been part of the UnitCargo team since

2015. I was born and bred in Rzeszów –

a city with deep roots and even deeper passions.

One of those passions, for me, has always been

speedway. I vividly remember the first time I experienced

a live match. My dad took me – a devoted

fan himself – and from the moment I heard

the thunder of the engines and caught the scent

of the track in the air, I was captivated. The energy

of the crowd, the rush of adrenaline, the raw drama

of the race – I was hooked. Speedway became

more than a hobby; it became a shared ritual with

my father, a link to my friends, and a connection to

the soul of my hometown.

For those not in the know, speedway – or motorcycle

speedway – is a high-octane sport where riders

compete on oval dirt tracks in short, four-lap

heats. The bikes have just one gear and no brakes.

That’s right – no brakes. Riders slide through corners

in a manoeuvre called ‘broadsiding’, a daring

dance of control and chaos that’s as thrilling to

watch as it is perilous to perform.

Here in Rzeszów, speedway runs in our veins. Our

local team, Stal Rzeszów, carries decades of tradition

and pride. On race days, the city pulses with

anticipation. Families, friends, neighbours – all gather

in the stands, united by hope and hometown

spirit. I go to as many matches as I can. But it’s never

just about watching. It’s about belonging – to

the team, to the city, to something that stirs the

heart.

Away from the track and the office, you’ll often find

me on two wheels of a different kind. Cycling is

my way to unwind. After a day’s work, I jump on

my bike and lose myself in the rhythm of the ride.

Whether it’s along city paths or country trails beyond

Rzeszów, cycling gives me the space to clear

my head and recharge. It’s exercise, it’s freedom –

and it’s balance.

What I truly appreciate about working at UnitCargo

is the spirit of the people around me. Everyone

has their passion – whether it’s sport, travel,

or something uniquely their own. That energy is

infectious. For me, whether I’m cheering from the

stands or pedalling through the countryside, staying

active fuels the positivity I bring into every part

of my life.
