The VAPA Foundation will
bring in-classroom arts
programs to 25 schools

impacting more than
4,700 students across 135
classrooms - all thanks
to the massive influx of
funding from the Prebys
Sparx grant. The initiative
redefines mental health
support in schools,
creating a scalable curriculum for artsbased
social-emotional learning (SEL).
Doreen Schonbrun, longtime board
member and founder of the VAPA
Foundation was instrumental in
connecting the organization with
key grant partner Expressive Arts
Institute. “We felt that there was a
tremendous need in the public school
system to have fine arts programs for
these kids,” said Schonbrun whose
time as a teaching artist highlighted the challenges of
many students who simply did not have the most basic
materials at home to make art. “The joy of having arts
is essential to the well-being of all human beings.”
Through the Expressive Arts Institute’s 60-hour
certificated training, teaching artists are equipped with
evidence-based practices that blend visual art, music,
movement, drama, and writing into dynamic socialemotional
learning experiences in the classroom. The

Katelyn Woodside,

the arts improves mental health,
and Expressive Arts is designed
to cultivate self-awareness, selfreflection,
and empathy. By actively
engaging the senses and imagination,
this curriculum facilitates a deeper
understanding and connection to oneself and others.
This accessible approach empowers students to
effectively navigate challenges, build resilience, and
foster sustained emotional well-being.
The Prebys Sparx grant is the seed fund for this pilot
program of the social-emotional arts education, but
the need for ongoing funding continues. To learn more

DEEP
DIAMOND EDUCATIONAL
EXCELLENCE PARTNERSHIP
In southeastern San Diego, where nearly
half the students are learning English
for the first time and most come from
low-income households, learning to read
is about more than school – it is about
opportunity. Research shows that kids
who are not proficient readers by third
grade are four times more likely to drop out
of high school. But for families facing housing
instability, underfunded schools, and limited
access to books, helping children succeed
is not easy. That is where DEEP (Diamond
Educational Excellence Partnership) steps in.
Sandra Timmons, a local literacy advocate and DEEP supporter,
explains: “DEEP applies well-documented techniques-supporting
parents and caregivers with early learning workshops, training
teachers in research-based practices, and offering after-school
enrichment and language support. Our past emphasis on learning to
read through context is like trying to play an instrument using the
‘think system’ from The Music Man.”
Rather than addressing the literacy gap in isolation, DEEP brings
together families, educators, and community groups to form a circle
of support for young readers. Their work starts before kids even enter
school. Through the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program,
families receive free books and guidance on building strong reading
habits at home. These simple moments of shared reading lay the
foundation for lifelong literacy.
In the classroom, DEEP ensures K-3 teachers at partner schools
receive professional development grounded in the Science of Reading
- a research-backed approach focused on phonics and comprehension.
Principals collaborate
to align instruction
and strengthen
schoolwide reading
practices. The impact
is clear: third-grade
reading proficiency
at DEEP schools has
grown from 28% to
34% in just a few
years, outpacing
district trends.
Outside of school
hours, DEEP
extends its support
through afterschool
and summer
programs designed
to make reading fun. The Soaring Readers tutoring
program offers small-group instruction by certified
teachers, helping students build skills and confidence.
Meanwhile, Summer Readers, Future Leaders blends
literacy with hands-on science, art, and music, keeping
kids engaged and learning year-round.
What sets DEEP apart is its strong community
connection. Rather than working from the outside in,
DEEP partners with trusted local parents and leaders
who serve as Family Empowerment Partners. These
community liaisons help bridge the gap between

schools and families, ensuring literacy
support is accessible and culturally
relevant.
“For me, DEEP is not about individual
success,” Timmons says. “It is about
creating a generation
of readers - ensuring
every student learns
to read by third
grade so they can
read to learn for the
rest of their lives.”
With plans to
expand from four
partner schools to
others in the Lincoln
Cluster and beyond,
DEEP shows that
the literacy crisis
can be solved.
When teachers are
equipped, families
are supported, and
communities unite,
real change happens. A thriving city starts with strong
readers - and there are many ways to get involved.
Whether by volunteering, donating, or spreading the
word, supporting DEEP is an investment in a future
where every child has the chance to succeed.
All donations directly fund evidence-based programs:
early literacy workshops, teacher training, tutoring,
book distribution, and STEAM enrichment - ensuring
students in southeastern San Diego achieve reading
proficiency by third grade. Learn more or get involved at

Railroad Museum’s Inaugural Wine Train

Tickets for the Wine

I
do not think I am alone in
my belief that the Campo

best kept secrets in San

throwback to the
days when passenger and
freight trains traveled to and
from San Diego, not by way of
Los Angeles, but directly from
the east over what was called
“The Impossible Railroad.”
The track took a tortured

and for those who opted for non-alcohol, a variety of
flavorful juice mixtures were offered with equal fanfare.
As the train poked along for a few miles through the
manzanita brush and oak south of Campo and back
again, you could not help but feel that the Museum was
on to something here. Those in charge say they want to
do more such trips, but it may be several months. The
cars are not air-conditioned, and desert heat limits the
activity calendar for special events.
That said, Campo’s Wine
Train can be a wonderful
extension of the Museum’s
commitment to railroad
history and preservation.
Offered as a fundraiser, it
may help with that goal.
I was part of a group

return in a heartbeat with
probably eight more along

the plan is on track for
more. For what it’s worth,

For more than a
century, Girl Scouts

has encouraged
girls to explore their
interests, challenge
themselves, and lead
with confidence. From Daisies
in kindergarten to Ambassadors
in high school, GSSD provides
year-round programs for more
than 15,000 girls in San Diego and
Imperial counties, striving to be
the go-to partner for developing
and elevating girl and women
leaders in the region.
The Girl Scout Leadership

transformative for girls in grades

National University Foundation
ANTICIPATING ANOTHER MEMORABLE SEPTEMBER GALA
Donors and guests will gather
under the stars on the historic
flight deck of the USS Midway,
set against the breathtaking San

of dining, live entertainment, and
celebration. The event culminates
with the presentation of the 2025 NU

non-traditional students forging their
paths to success.

University’s Whole
Human Education -
and you are invited!
Terry Kraft, Nancy Rohland,
Rolf and Mary Benirschke
Among the evening’s highlights will be the recognition
of two extraordinary honorees - celebrated together as
one couple - and another individual whose leadership
and compassion have left a lasting mark on the San
Diego community.
Rolf and Mary Benirschke have devoted their lives to
lifting others, both during and after Rolf’s celebrated NFL
career with the San Diego Chargers. After overcoming a
life-threatening illness, Rolf became a leading voice for
patient advocacy, organ donation awareness, and a wide
range of charitable causes. Together, the Benirschkes have
supported numerous local organizations, exemplifying
a deep-rooted spirit of hope and an unwavering
commitment to making San Diego a healthier, stronger,
and more connected community.
Jeanne McAlister, a pioneer in addiction recovery,
transformed her own personal journey into a mission
that has changed lives. As founder of the McAlister
Institute, she created compassionate, community-focused
programs to support individuals and families facing
substance use challenges. Her decades of leadership,
courage, and compassion have empowered tens of
thousands to reclaim their futures and reimagine
what is possible.
Proceeds from the Gala will directly support the
ANDers Fund, a first-of-its-kind initiative dedicated
to removing financial barriers for non-traditional,
military-connected, and working students - those
balancing education with jobs, families, military
service, and caregiving.
The Fund provides emergency grants, scholarships,
and holistic support to help students stay on track and
complete their degrees. It reflects NU’s deep commitment
to meeting learners where they are and helping them
thrive - academically, professionally, and personally.
The NU Foundation Gala also offers a powerful platform
for sponsors to support educational access. A wide
range of sponsorship opportunities are available - from
Presenting Sponsor to Soaring Scholars Sponsor and
more - each designed to match philanthropic goals
while providing meaningful visibility, VIP access, and
alignment with a mission that is transforming lives.
Whether contributing at the highest level or hosting a
table of guests, sponsors will join a celebration of purpose
and progress - helping more students overcome obstacles
and achieve their dreams.

“Education is

that measure, the Cal Coast

issued a LOT of passports!
Celebrating its 10-year
anniversary this year, the
foundation has awarded
more than $1.3 million in
grants to local educators
and scholarships to college
students, college-bound
high school seniors, and
current or former foster

over $965,000 in college
scholarships, $293,000 in
foster youth scholarships,
and $373,000 in educator grants.

are developing projects
to enrich classroom
engagement and
creative learning. We
are grateful for every
donor and supporter
in the community who
has made it possible for
the foundation to have
a positive impact on so
many lives.”
Over the years, educators
have used grants to
support innovative
classroom projects related
to STREAM (Science,
Technology, Reading,
Engineering, Arts, and
Math) such as robotics, drone technology, Eco Art,
smart farming, underwater remote vehicles, reading
supplies, and much more.
One local educator who received a
foundation grant for his students is
Rodger Dohm, who teaches at Poway
High School. “I am so grateful for
the support of the Cal Coast Cares
Foundation. They provided us with the
parts necessary to build and compete in
the FIRST Robotics Competition. The
foundation not only provided access
to this opportunity but also provided
inspirational and motivational learning!”
Students have used their scholarships to
help them pursue their educational goals
at local community colleges and fouryear
colleges and universities within, and
outside, of California.

Community
Ending Homelessness
Through Collective Impact
This is what collective impact looks like:
businesses, nonprofits, and neighbors
coming together with shared responsibility
and a common goal. It is a model of
collaboration - not competition - where
every voice, contribution, and
partnership matters.
At Father Joe’s
Villages, the
path to ending
homelessness
is paved with
shared purpose,
bold leadership,
and collective
action. No single
organization
can solve such
a complex
issue alone -
but together,
meaningful progress becomes not only possible, but
inevitable.
Across San Diego, corporate partners are proving
that when business and community align, the results
are transformative. These mission-driven companies
are not just giving - they are co-creating change.
Through strategic philanthropy, hands-on service, and
leadership, they help transform lives and challenge the
systems that keep people unhoused.
One powerful example is Qualcomm. A longtime and
deeply valued partner of Father Joe’s Villages, the
Qualcomm Foundation was named the organization’s
75th Anniversary Visionary Corporate Partner,
with a $1 million commitment from the Qualcomm
Foundation to support efforts to prevent and end

extraordinary
gift exemplifies
how bold
corporate
leadership can
drive systemic
change and
community
impact.
From
multi-year
investments
to employee
volunteer days,
the business
community is
stepping up in
significant, measurable ways. Their generosity reflects
the values that guide Father Joe’s Villages: Compassion,
Respect, Empathy, Empowerment, and Dignity.
Partners like Neurocrine Biosciences also embody this
spirit. What began as a pandemic-era collaboration,
has grown into a long-term relationship rooted in
shared values. “It has always been important to us to
give back to the community where we work and live,”
said Kyle W. Gano, Ph.D., CEO. “We are proud to
partner with Father Joe’s Villages.”
These partnerships offer more than funding - they
activate teams, build trust, and foster connection.
When employees serve meals, assemble welcome kits,
or support employment programs, they engage directly
with the mission. That hands-on involvement often
sparks deeper
commitment
and long-term
advocacy.

Honoring a Legacy
of Compassion
For 18 years, Laura Tancredi-Baese did
not just lead Home Start - she poured her
heart into it. Her days were filled with
real conversations, listening closely to the
families who depended on Home Start,
and rolling up her sleeves to tackle the
everyday challenges they faced. It was
about more than fancy titles and lofty speeches. She
wanted to ensure that every child and parent felt truly
cared for.
LAURA TANCREDI-BAESE AND
HOME START’S TRANSFORMATION
BY NICHOLE NAOUM
Laura’s approach was refreshingly down-to-earth.
Whether she was launching a housing program for
young mothers or expanding services to help people
in crisis, she always kept her focus on the people
behind the numbers. “We have expanded life-changing
resources like housing, food assistance, tax return
support, job training, behavioral health services, and
more. Just last year alone, we helped more than 20,000
people break cycles of poverty, abuse, homelessness,
and neglect,” she shared with GB Magazine.
One of the things
that stands
out about her
leadership, was
her knack for
spotting what
was missing.
Instead of
following the
crowd, she took
a chance on ideas
that seemed
a bit risky at
first - ideas that
would eventually
drive real
change. “You are stepping
into a role that has
the power to change
lives,” she reminded her
successor, a simple yet
powerful message that
encapsulated her belief in
the transformative power
of empathy and action.
Her legacy is written in
the everyday moments
that made a difference.
Think about the relief
on a young mother’s face
when she first walks into
her own safe apartment,
or the quiet gratitude of
a family finally having a
place to call home. These
are the moments that
defined Laura’s time at Home
Start. They are reminders that
even small acts of kindness
can have a ripple effect,
turning hardships into hope.
As Home Start moves
forward, the spirit of Laura’s
guidance continues to resonate
throughout the organization.
The genuine care she showed
“I am proud of the
countless lives we
have changed… every
initiative has been a
step toward a stronger,
healthier community.
That is a legacy I will
always cherish.”
is not confined
to boardrooms
or press releases
- it is alive in
every team
meeting, every
community
event, and every
time someone
in need receives
a helping hand.
Her influence
is a warm
reminder that
true leadership
is about being
present, being patient,
and most of all, being
human.
Laura’s journey with
Home Start shows that
true leadership is all
about asking the right
questions, listening
intently to real stories,
and taking the time to
understand what people
really need.
During her tenure, Laura
made Home Start feel
like home. When asked
about her proudest
accomplishments, she
stated “I am proud of the
countless lives we have
changed. From providing safe
housing to young mothers to
creating job training programs
that empower individuals to
build better futures, every
initiative has been a step
toward a stronger, healthier
community. That is a legacy I
will always cherish.”

WORKSHOPS FOR WARRIORS EXPANDS
TO EMPOWER MORE VETERANS
Here in San Diego, Workshops for
Warriors (WFW), a 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organization, is addressing
one of the country’s most urgent
challenges: a national skilled labor
shortage. At the same time, it is
transforming the lives of veterans
and transitioning service members by providing them
with the training and support needed to succeed in
high-demand civilian careers. On August 15, WFW will
celebrate a landmark moment with the ribbon cutting of
a new 25,000 square foot advanced manufacturing
training facility, greatly expanding its ability to
prepare students for the next chapter in their lives.
WFW ’s accelerated 16-week programs in Welding
and CNC Machining offer hands-on, industry-driven
training. Students can earn portable, stackable,
nationally recognized credentials from organizations
such as the National Institute for Metalworking Skills
(NIMS), the American Welding Society (AWS), and
SolidWorks.
The new state-of-the-art facility in Barrio Logan
will significantly increase WFW’s capacity, allowing
it to serve more students, adding an additional
360 graduates per year. It will feature expanded
classrooms, high-tech lab spaces, and upgraded
equipment that mirrors real-world manufacturing
environments. This expansion will elevate the quality
of training while providing an environment that
instills confidence, encourages camaraderie, and
equips students with the skills and mindset needed to
thrive in the workforce.
Since 2008, WFW has
trained more than
1,400 students who
have earned over
19,000 credentials.
Thanks to the
generosity of donors,
corporate partners, and
foundations, students
receive comprehensive
support that includes
access to instruction
and hands-on training,
along with essentials
such as food,
clothing, and other
basic necessities.
This support system
allows students to
stay focused on their
education and future
careers without
the added stress of
financial hardship.
For many, enrolling
at WFW is more
than just the start of
a training program,
it is a turning point
in their lives. After
years of military
service, students
often arrive looking for a
renewed sense of purpose,
stability, and direction in a
world that can feel uncertain.
The transition to civilian
life can be challenging, and
WFW provides a structured,
supportive environment where
students can rebuild with
confidence. As the need for
skilled manufacturing professionals continues to grow
nationwide, WFW remains a powerful example of how
veteran talent can help meet that demand.
Since 2008, WFW has
trained more than

San Diego PACE Turns 10
HONORING A DECADE OF DIGNITY AND CARE
With one in four San
Diegans projected
to be over the age of
60 by 2030, access
to comprehensive,
compassionate senior
care is more important
than ever. Since 2015, San Diego PACE (Program of
All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly), a division of San
Ysidro Health, has been at the forefront of meeting that
need, delivering a transformative model of care that
enables older adults to age with dignity, safety, and
independence in their own homes and communities.
What began as a single site in San Ysidro has
grown into a countywide effort to provide tailored,
wraparound services for seniors with complex medical
and social needs. Today,
San Diego PACE is the
third-largest program of
its kind in California and
the fourth largest in the
nation, serving more than
3,000 seniors annually
across locations in San
Ysidro, Chula Vista, El
Cajon, Vista, and soon,
National City.
San Diego PACE
offers a full range of
integrated services from primary and specialty care to
rehabilitation, transportation, nutrition, social activities,
and behavioral health. These services are designed not
only to manage chronic conditions but to empower
seniors to remain connected and engaged in their
communities. The program also brings peace of mind
to caregivers, who know their loved ones are receiving
personalized attention from a trusted care team.
This year, the program celebrates its 10th anniversary.
In recognition of its impact, the San Diego City
Council officially
proclaimed February
25, 2025, as “San
Diego PACE Day” a
milestone that reflects
the program’s growing
role in addressing the
region’s aging population
and supporting health
equity for seniors
in underserved
communities.
Across San Diego
County, many older
adults face obstacles
such as limited mobility,
social isolation, or difficulty
accessing care. San Diego
PACE breaks down those
barriers through a patientcentered
model that
coordinates every aspect of
care, allowing seniors to stay
healthy, active, and supported
throughout their golden years.
San Diego PACE is part of
the broader mission of San
Ysidro Health, a nonprofit
organization that has served
the region for more than 55

years. With over 50
program sites and more
than 160,000 patients
in its care, San Ysidro
Health continues to
be a trusted provider
for families across
all stages of life from
pediatrics to senior
care. Founded in 1969
by a group of mothers
seeking better healthcare
for their children, the
organization remains
rooted in the community
and committed to
ensuring access for all.
As San Diego PACE enters its
second decade, it continues to
be a vital resource for seniors
and their families proving that
aging in place, with dignity
and quality care, is not just
possible, but a promise worth
keeping.

Youth
A Night to Dream Big
BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF GREATER SAN DIEGO
For over 80 years, the Boys
& Girls Clubs of Greater
San Diego has been a
cornerstone of youth
development. Serving
more than 21,000 children
annually across 23 locations
throughout San Diego County, the Clubs
are more than after-school programs -
they are safe spaces where children can
feel supported and empowered. Many of
these young people face significant obstacles in their
everyday lives. Yet inside every Club, there is hope.
There is a dream. Whether it is an aspiring artist
discovering their voice through creative expression or
Inside
every
Club, there
is hope.
There is a
dream
a budding scientist inspired by hands-on
STEM activities, these experiences are
more than stories - they are proof that
when youth are empowered to dream
big, they grow into confident, capable
adults ready to change the world.
Each year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of
Greater San Diego hosts An Evening of
Changing Lives - a signature gala that
honors the limitless potential of youth
and the community that helps turn their
dreams into reality. This year’s event will take place
on Saturday, September 13, at the stunning Marriott
Marquis San Diego Marina, with an inspiring theme:
Dream Big.
Beyond the
clouds and
shooting for
the stars, this
year’s Dream Big
gala will reflect
the hopes held
for every child
who enters the
Club doors:
the freedom
to imagine a
brighter future
and the tools
to pursue
it. Guests
will enjoy
an elegant
evening of fine
dining, live
entertainment
by The Mighty
Untouchables,
and powerful
stories shared
by Club youth
and alumni.
From current
members
reflecting on
the impact of
the Club in
their lives, to
alumni sharing
how that
support helped shape their journeys, the program is a
moving reminder that when a child is given the chance
to dream big, incredible things happen.
The night will also include a cocktail hour, live
and silent auctions, opportunity drawings, and an
interactive photobooth. Thanks to the generosity of
sponsors, donors, and community leaders, the event
raises critical funds that directly support the Club’s
academic success programs, character and leadership
development, and
healthy lifestyle
initiatives. Every
dollar raised
helps remove
barriers and open
doors - within the
Club and beyond.
An Evening of
Changing Lives
is more than
just a gala - it is
a reminder of
what becomes
possible when
a community
chooses to
invest in its
youth. It is a
call to action
for every
supporter,
volunteer, and
advocate who
believes in a
brighter future.
It is about
presenting
opportunities
to kids who
may not see the
possibilities in
front of them
and reminding
them that their dreams are valid - and achievable.
Join us for this unforgettable evening; whether through
sponsoring a table, making a gift, or simply attending,
each act of support helps create new possibilities for
youth—and may be the very encouragement a child
needs to dream bigger than they ever thought possible.
Together, let’s Dream Big and change lives.

Lifeline Community Services
BACK TO SCHOOL, BACK TO HOPE
It is that time of year again - new pencils, fresh
notebooks, first-day jitters, and the promise
of a clean slate. But for too many kids in our
community, back-to-school season is not filled
with excitement. It is filled with uncertainty.
That is where Lifeline Community Services
comes in.
For over
50 years,
Lifeline
Community
Services
has been a
steady force
in San Diego
County,
supporting
over 25,000
youth,
adults, and
families each
year. Lifeline
works at the
intersection
of behavioral
health
and economic development. Their programs span
everything from Youth Development and Behavioral
Health to Housing & Self-Sufficiency, Child Abuse
Prevention, and Anti-Human Trafficking.
One of their most powerful efforts is their Wellness
Back-to-School Backpack Program. This is not just
about school supplies. It is about showing up for
our kids - in ways that impact their mental health,
academic success, and sense of belonging. Having a
new backpack reduces stress and anxiety by creating
comfort and familiarity, as well as boosting self-esteem
with pride in ownership. A child that is hungry and
feels unsupported has a hard time learning. These
backpacks include snacks and basic necessities that
reduce daily stressors.
The backpacks also supply the right tools so that students
can fully engage in the classroom. That means higher
participation,
better grades,
and stronger
connections
with
teachers and
peers. Many
schools team
up with
Lifeline to
make sure
students get
access to
additional
mental health
resources and
behavioral
support
when they
need it most.
