EXPLORING NONPROFIT DISASTER
READINESS
Each June, as disaster season approaches, preparedness
becomes second nature for Miamians. With every passing year,
we adapt — responding to shifting weather patterns, rising sea
levels, and intensifying storms. At the heart of this evolving
landscape are Miami’s nonprofits: trusted, adaptable, and deeply
rooted in the communities they serve.
A 2024 countywide survey by The Miami Foundation confirmed
their indispensable role and persistent challenges in funding and
capacity. Building on that work, this year, we surveyed a network
of 77 disaster-related Miami nonprofits to continue to map their
services and needs. The findings highlight nonprofits as vital
community hubs during emergencies, reveal service gaps in
under-served neighborhoods, and make the case for strategic,
cross sector funding.
This snapshot is both a reflection and a call to action: to invest, to
connect, and to prepare — so that each neighborhood has the
support it needs when it matters most.

but this coverage is not equitable.

West and Northwest Miami communities such as:
