ESQUILINO
Esquilino: The bustling rione of history,
diversity, and grit
One of Rome’s Seven Hills, Esquilino is
an ancient neighbourhood with a vibrant
and multicultural present. Here you
will find a little bit of everything: plenty
of history, as it begun as the home to
the semi-mythical Ancient Roman King,
Servius, and is dotted with ancient walls
and ruins; religious significance, from
the magnificent Papal church of Santa
Maria Maggiore; 19th century Italian
architecture, in the famous colonnade
of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele; and a
thriving food scene blending authentic
local flavors with diverse international
cuisines.
Esquilino is home to many of Rome’s
immigrant populations, giving it a
distinct and diverse atmosphere. The
streets are filled with local markets and
eateries that reflect the neighborhood’s
global influences, as well as bookshops,
galleries and cafès. As it’s slightly
outside the tourist center, Esquilino
feels more grounded and authentic –
a reflection of the real Rome, both its
history and the city it is today.
Right now, Esquilino is seeing a
resurgence in tourism and international
recognition after the death of Pope
Francis, who flouted tradition by
choosing to be buried in Santa Maria
Maggiore. The burial has transformed
Santa Maria Maggiore into a significant
pilgrimage site, drawing thousands of
visitors and adding a new dimension
to Esquilino’s cultural and spiritual
landscape.

Come indulge in this sophisticated Italian restaurant
owned by two Italian brothers. Highly recommended
by locals, the eatery’s best-loved recipes are its
egg custard and truffle dishes. The traditional and
authentic feel and taste of the restaurant will have
you come back repeatedly. Make sure to book a
table in advance as seating is limited.
Casadante is a spacious, open-concept restaurant.
It is a trendy, intellectual vibe, and delicious food
to match. The cuisine is primarily classic Roman,
but the menu also features a selection of DOP
hamburgers, plus an alluring wine list. Casadante
is located off Piazza Dante.
This isn’t just a restaurant: it’s an establishment.
Started in 1916, Trattoria Vecchia Roma serves
locals with very classic Roman dishes. The familiar
carbonara, cacio e pepe, and amatriciana, are all
features, but so are those less familiar for tourists
– coda alla vaccinara (oxtail), rigatoni con la pajata
(pasta with small intestines). Their porchetta
(roasted suckling pig) should not be missed.
Mercato Centrale is an expansive collection
of gourmet restaurants and cafès – a foodie’s
paradise. They call themselves a workshop, and
those making the food the artisans. Whatever you’re
after – italian truffles, argentinian empanadas,
chinese dumplings, neapolitan sfogliatelle pastries,
trapizzino, a smashburger, or simply a gelato and

Even if you do not have a sweet tooth, stopping
by Regoli for a pastry is an absolute must. This
pasticceria is famous for its maritozzi, a Roman
pastry filled to the brim with whipped cream. Other
delights include a custard-filled shortbread dotted
with fresh strawberries, or the fagottine – “little
bundles” of ricotta.
Forno Conti is a bakery (and more) in the heart of
Esquilino. With its minimalist, Nordic-inspired vibe,
it offers a mix of international, Italian, Scandinavian,
and French recipes. From Venetian buns and
cardamom rolls to croissants, pain au chocolat,
and a wide variety of breads, there’s something for
everyone. Lunchtime features tasty savory pastries,
quiches, and pizza, all paired with specialty coffee.
Marco G’s is the restaurant you think doesn’t exist
in Rome anymore. Small and welcoming, packed
with locals until the late hours of the evening,
dishing out Roman pasta and pinse–a thick, almost
focaccia-like, Roman-style pizza– with warmth
and authenticity. It’s the kind of place where you
hesitate, just a little, before telling others about it;
but, then you think, it would be selfish not to share.
At De Zhuang Restaurant, an exciting variety
of menus awaits, each dedicated to the unique
experience of Chinese Fondue or hot pot style
dining. Imagine each table adorned with a central,
steaming metal cauldron, inviting guests to partake
in the interactive joy of cooking their own meals,
picking and mixing different tastes.

ST. MARY MAJOR
Piazza di S. Maria Maggiore, 42
One of Rome’s four Papal Basilicas, this magnificent church is the final resting place of seven Popes,
including the late Pope Francis. It is richly decorated, with majestic columns, gold embellishments, and a
stunning blend of Paleochristian and Medieval mosaics.
The Basilica also houses several important relics, most notably the Salus Populi Romani, a revered
painting of the Virgin Mary believed to have been created by Saint Luke. Its arrival in Rome was so
momentous that it was paraded through the streets for three days.
For those more interested in art than religion, the church features the tomb of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one
of Rome’s greatest sculptors, and Arnolfo di Cambio’s nativity scene — the very first nativity scene in art
history.
Over 1,600 years old, the Basilica is truly awe-inspiring. Its Romanesque bell tower rises 75 meters above
Esquiline Hill, making it the tallest in Rome.
SAN VITO CHURCH
Via Carlo Alberto, 47
This small church curiously
features two distinct facades:
one made of marble and the
other of ancient brick. The
brick facade is part of the
original Servian Walls, Rome’s
ancient defensive fortifications,
and is connected to the Arch
of Gallieno, a remnant of the
Porta Esquilina—the historic
Esquiline Gate. The marble
facade dates back to the late
15th century, when Pope Sixtus
IV established the church.
Offering a fascinating window
into Rome’s layered history,
this church also has a darker
side; its “Stone of Iniquity” was
used as a torture device against
Christian martyrs.
A grand building in Umbertine
style, Palazzo Merulana is
a cultural hub, art gallery,
bookstore and cafè. Housing
mostly Roman and Italian
artworks, the chic space
explores 20th century art. The
sculpture-filled lobby and its
café is perfect for peoplewatching
or studying, and after
wandering through its dedicated
exhibition floors, head up to the
terrace to enjoy skyline views of
the Eternal City.
SANTA PRASSEDE
Via di Santa Prassede, 9A
A tiny church, tucked away
around the corner of its
imposing neighbour, Santa
Maria Maggorie, Santa Prassede
is a hidden gem. Considered the
masterpiece of Early Medieval
Rome, its Byzantine mosaics are
some of the oldest in the city,
and were executed by artists all
the way from Constantinople. It
tells the story of the relationship
between the two Roman
Empires, and the diplomatic and
religious ties which formed the
early Church.

TEATRO
BRANCACCIO
Via Merulana, 244
Teatro Brancaccio stands as
one of Rome’s principal and
most recognizable theatres,
a cornerstone of the city’s
performing arts scene. In
line with the vibrance of the
neighbourhood, it has played a
central role in Roman cultural
life since its opening in 1916. It
hosts everything: from serious
opera-musicals based on
the lives of artists (the latest
of these is Frida Kahlo) to a
comedy-musical about a choir
of nuns – and that’s just this
season.
PIAZZA VITTORIO
EMANUELE II
P.za Vittorio Emanuele II
Built in the aftermath of Italy’s
reunification, this piazza is
surrounded by Italian palaces
and 19th-century style
porticoes. Walking under these
grand rows of columns, which
outline one of the largest
piazzas in Rome, you will
encircle the garden in its center.
The garden itself is dotted with
ruins; the remains of an Ancient
Roman fountain, the Trophies
of Marius. On a sunny day, the
park comes alive, a showcase
of a vibrant and still-local
neighbourhood surrounded by
history.
MERCATO ESQUILINO
Via Principe Amedeo, 184
Open 5am – 3pm every day except
Sunday
Housed in a sprawling indoor
warehouse near Piazza Vittorio
Emanuele, the Mercato
Esquilino is a market that
bustles with energy as locals
and vendors shout, haggle, and
weave through tightly packed
stalls. The market is a colorful
amalgamation of fresh produce,
exotic spices, international
ingredients, and imported goods
from across Asia, Africa, and
the Middle East, reflecting the
diverse communities that call
the area home. It’s a chaotic
but fascinating glimpse into the
daily life and global flavor of
Esquilino. Bring a good appetite,

BASILICA DI SANTA CROCE IN GERUSALEMME
Piazza di S. Croce in Gerusalemme
Santa Croce in Gerusalemme is an extraordinarily old church, originally
built in 324 AD as a chapel to house sacred relics. Before that, the site
had many lives: an Imperial villa, an amphitheatre, and the residence of
Helen, mother of Constantine. The Chapel of Relics still holds a copy of
the Holy Shroud, pieces of the crucifixion cross, and thorns from Christ’s
crown. The church reflects the evolution of Roman art and architecture
— from its Baroque design to an Ancient Roman statue on the altarpiece, reworked to depict Helen.

From May 25 to June 22, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville will tour Rome’s neighborhoods,
bringing opera where you least expect it — right into piazzas, courtyards, and city corners.
This beloved project by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma turns a truck into a full-on mobile
stage, complete with live orchestra, singers, lighting, and costumes. The container opens like
a curtain, and suddenly the square becomes a theatre. People show up with their own chairs
and share an evening of live music, laughter, and community.
“It’s like a circus crossing Rome, full of musicians and acrobats” Director Manu Lalli describes
it as a chance to be swept away by the energy of Rossini’s music. Opera escapes its traditional
venues and becomes a festive, open event that brings people together.
This version of The Barber of Seville is light and playful while staying true to Rossini’s spirit.
The Teatro dell’Opera’s orchestra is conducted by Carlo Donadio, and direction, costumes,
and lights are all by Manu Lalli, who draws inspiration from circus arts, commedia dell’arte,
and street culture. The cast features young talents from the Teatro’s “Fabbrica” Young Artist
Program.

A NIGHT AT THE COLOSSEUM
The Night Tour
Special evening openings are scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 PM to
midnight, with last entry at 10:30 PM. Tours are conducted in small groups of up to 25 people
per slot. The visit, available in both Italian and English, unfolds like a story — told from the
perspective of the spectators who once filled the Colosseum, as well as that of the gladiators
themselves.
The guide will describe in detail what a typical day was like inside the monument, from wild
animal hunts (known as venationes) to the munera, the gladiator combats — who were
admired and cheered like today’s football stars.
The Tour Itinerary
The night tour begins at the northern entrance arch, once the main access point for emperors.
From the arena floor, visitors enjoy a striking view of the cavea while learning about the grand
spectacles once offered to the Roman public.
The tour then leads into the underground area, featuring the new permanent exhibition:
“Spectacles in the Colosseum Arena: The Protagonists”, curated by Alfonsina Russo, Federica
Rinaldi, and Barbara Nazzaro.
This immersive exhibition highlights the lives of gladiators and wild animals involved in the
shows, with dramatic elements like:
• A holographic projection of gladiators emerging from the darkness
• A 2nd-century AD mosaic depicting a hunting scene
• Ancient graffiti, oil lamps, and lift mechanisms used to bring fighters and beasts to the
arena
• Full-scale replicas of gladiator armor, from the retiarius to the murmillo
• A powerful blend of history and technology brings the Colosseum’s arena back to life.
Starting Tuesday, May
13, the “A Night at the
Colosseum” initiative returns
— a guided tour that offers
the rare opportunity to visit
the Flavian Amphitheater
after dark, including areas
usually closed to the public.
The 60-minute tour
includes the first level of the
monument, the arena floor,
and the underground tunnels
— a truly unmissable
chance to uncover the
secrets of Rome’s most
iconic landmark.

Il Marchese unites the best of two worlds: a bar with
elegant French salon accents and pompous chandeliers,
and a restaurant with the coziness of a Roman trattoria.
But it’s not just the décor that’s impressive. When you
walk into Il Marchese you step inside Europe’s first Amaro
bar with more than 500 different Amaro labels.
During the recent G20 in Rome, Il Marchese had two
special customers: the American First Lady Jill Biden
and the French Première Dame Brigitte Macron. The two
ladies said they were “delighted with the lovely welcome”,
complimenting the staff and the quality of the products.
ll Marchese takes its name from the Marchese del Grillo,
a symbol of Rome’s inimitable spirit– a true gentleman,
but always inclined to irony, a lover of tradition, but also
appreciated by those who come from different cultures.
Here, with Chef Daniele Roppo, you’re sure to have a
fantastic dining experience. The culinary philosophy has strong Roman roots and is inspired
by traditional recipes that are lightened according to a contemporary taste, also offering
vegetarian dishes. Quality is always a priority. Ingredients are purchased from local producers.
The amaro and cocktail bar at Il Marchese pays tribute to the elegance of 19th-century
French aristocracy, with precious stuccoes, wallpapers, and velvets. The cocktails here are
perfect for an after-dinner drink or as an aperitif. Each signature drink is crafted with premium
ingredients expertly mixed. Leading the cocktail bar is Fabrizio Valeriani, a bartender with
extensive experience.

There’s no better way to spend a warm

There’s one word to describe the exhibition
From the Heart to the Hands: Dolce&Gabbana
at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome: wonder.
After its acclaimed showings in Milan and
Paris, the exhibition curated by Florence
Müller arrives in the Italian capital — open
until August 13 in the grand halls designed
by Pio Piacentini and inaugurated in 1883.
More than just a fashion exhibition, it’s a
theatrical journey that transports visitors
through temples, opera houses, and cinematic
scenes, brought to life by Agence Galuchat’s
scenography, and showcasing over 200
unique creations by the legendary duo, icons
of Italian Haute Couture.
Bold and breathtaking, Dolce & Gabbana
enchant Palazzo delle Esposizioni with their
own “Grand Tour” of the Italian peninsula.
Unfolding across nearly 1,500 square meters
of immersive spaces, the exhibition invites
visitors into the creative mind of a brand
that is sensual, ironic, irreverent — at times
provocative, even revolutionary.
This show is an open love letter to Italian
culture, a timeless muse for Domenico Dolce
and Stefano Gabbana.
At Palazzo delle Esposizioni, the dress
FROM THE HEART TO THE HANDS: DOLCE&GABBANA
becomes a form of storytelling — an act of
identity. Craftsmanship transforms into visual
poetry, while the music echoing through the
halls serves as its score.
The origins of the two designers — Sicilian
Domenico Dolce and Milanese Stefano
Gabbana — shape an aesthetic sensibility
that reinterprets the Italian imagination with
both precision and creative freedom.
Whether you’re a fashion lover or not, this
exhibition leaves a lasting impression.
It captivates with tributes to Sicily’s ceramic
traditions, dating back to the Mycenaean
era, when key production centers included
Caltagirone, Monreale, and Santo Stefano di
Camastra — their vibrant artistry echoed in
the ornate decorations of Alta Moda gowns.
You’ll be amazed by the nods to Venice’s
iconic glassmaking heritage and the homage
to white Baroque, brought to life through the
enchanting art of master sculptor Giacomo
Serpotta.
Voluptuous garments inspired by carved
wooden figures from the 17th and 18th
centuries evoke the theatrical splendor of
the Baroque era — a celebration of Italian
tradition transformed into wearable art.

FIRENZE ROCKS 2025
FLORENCE
Many people love visiting Florence in the summer not only because of the beautiful art, vibrant
colors of the sunsets, and unique architecture, but also to enjoy the live music. This year,
thousands of rock enthusiasts will gather at the Visarno Arena for the annual “Firenze Rocks”
festival. You don’t want to miss out on this!
Kicking off the festival on Thursday, June 12, will be Guns N’ Roses, returning to Italy after
their show at Rome’s Circus Maximus on July 8, 2023, and their unforgettable performance at
Firenze Rocks in the summer of 2018.
Opening the day are Falling in Reverse, the band led by Ronnie Radke that has captivated
a global audience with its blend of metal, hip-hop, and infectious melodies; Rival Sons, the
Grammy-nominated California rock band known for their album Feral Roots (2019), which has
helped revive contemporary rock ‘n’ roll; Dirty Honey, one of the most promising new names in
global rock; and The Warning.
Firenze Rocks 2025 is ready to roll
with Guns N’ Roses, Korn, and Green Day!
Friday, June 13, will feature Korn, headlining with a concert that spans over 30 years of their
career. Since the ’90s, Korn has redefined metal music with their dark, experimental sound and
lyrics exploring themes like protest, pain, loneliness, and redemption. Sharing the stage on the
second day will be Public Enemy, pioneers in addressing crucial issues such as racism, police
violence, poverty, and social injustice through their music; Enter Shikari, known for their signature
blend of post-hardcore, electronica, punk, and experimental rock; Soft Play, a constantly
evolving band that stays true to their spirit of musical experimentation; Atwood, an up-andcoming
group with rock and indie influences; and LOccasione, a Tuscan band mixing folk, rock,
and singer-songwriter traditions.
