PHYSICIANS HONORED AT ANNUAL GALA
Dr. Joseph Stegman
Developmental & Behavioral

Dr. Matthew Benshoff
Northeast Anesthesia &
Pain Specialists
This year’s Gala was genuinely a night
of celebration. Among the numerous
festivities, two standout moments were
the recognition of our physicians at
Atrium Health Cabarrus. During the
program, we had the honor and privilege
of presenting the 2025 Lillibridge
Outstanding Physician Award to Dr.
Joseph Stegman and the 2nd Annual
Rising Star Award to Dr. Matthew
Benshoff.
Since 2013, Lillibridge Healthcare Services
has honored a physician demonstrating
outstanding leadership and dedicated
service to Atrium Health Cabarrus and
the Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation. This
year’s recipient is well known and loved
by some of our smallest patients and
their families as the Pediatric Behavioral
and Developmental Physician, Dr. Joseph
Stegman.
Dr. Stegman was born in Peru, Indiana
and is the youngest of four children.
He attended Indiana University and
graduated with a BS in Biological
Sciences in 1974. He received a
scholarship to medical school from the
United States Navy and graduated from
Indiana University School of Medicine
in 1978. He completed an internship at
Saint Michael’s Hospital in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin before entering the medical
corp in the US Navy.
His first duty station was Kaneohe Marine
Corp Air Station, in Hawaii, serving as a
battalion surgeon. He served on the USS
Tarawa during the Iranian hostage crisis,
witnessing the failed mission to free
the hostages and then their successful
release. After three years with the marines
in Hawaii and on-board ship, he went
to the National Naval Medical Center in
Bethesda, Maryland where he completed
his pediatric training. He served as the
only pediatrician at the Naval Hospital
in Key West, Florida for two years. After
receiving an honorable discharge, he
moved to Concord in August of 1987.
Dr. Stegman worked one year at
Piedmont Pediatric Clinic and then
started his own practice, which today is
Suburban Pediatric Clinic. He worked as a
primary care pediatrician from August of
1987 until the early 2000s. The American
Academy of Pediatrics planned a new
specialty, Developmental and Behavioral
Pediatrics, and Dr Stegman decided to
explore a new career path. In January of
2001, he became one of the first board
certified Developmental and Behavioral
Pediatricians in the country. It was his
vision to have a developmental clinic
in Concord and with the leadership of
Northeast Physician Network, he opened
The Developmental and Behavioral
Pediatrics of the Carolinas. The clinic
serves children with mild to severe
developmental disorders, learning
disorders, ADHD, and Autism. Dr.
Stegman does have plans to retire in June
2025. He also held several administrative
positions, serving as the Chairman of the
Northeast Physician Network, Medical
Director of Jeff Gordon Children’s
Hospital and an administrative role with
the Pediatric Service Line at Levine
Children’s Hospital.
For a second year, the Cabarrus
Healthcare Foundation Physician
Leadership Council and Atrium Health
Cabarrus announced the Rising Star
Nominees and Recipient. This award
honors a physician who is nominated
by their peers and has been part of the
medical staff at Atrium Health Cabarrus
for more than 3 years but less than 10
years, support the Cabarrus Healthcare
Foundation and share their talents,
time and treasure with our hospital and
community. This year, five physicians
were nominated by their peers and
annouoncing Dr. Matthew Benshoff as
this year’s Rising Star Recipeint.
Dr. Matthew Benshoff, an anesthesiologist
with Northeast Anesthesia and Pain
Specialists, was born in Beaufort, South
Carolina and raised in Raleigh, North
Carolina, Dr. Benshoff was instilled with
strong values from his parents, As a child,
he developed a love for biking, playing
tennis, and attending summer science
camps, nurturing his early aspiration
to become a doctor—following in the
footsteps of his paternal grandfather.
After earning his undergraduate
degree, Dr. Benshoff devoted a year to
AmeriCorps, working in early childhood
education and becoming fluent in
Spanish. Following this, he began medical
school at UNC Chapel Hill. He completed
his residency at Wake Forest University
and went on to specialize in cardiac
anesthesiology with a fellowship at Weill-
Cornell University in New York City.
In 2015, Dr. Benshoff accepted a position
with Northeast Anesthesia & Pain
Specialists (NAPS), where he quickly
became an integral member of the
cardiac team. Under the mentorship
of Dr. Bill Goglin, the president of the
group at that time, he transitioned into
a management role, ultimately rising to
the position of president of NAPS. In
addition, he serves as Secretary of the
Atrium Health Cabarrus Medical Staff, and
provides insight on many committees,
including the Peri-Operative Governance
Committee, the Cabarrus Surgical
Steering Workgroup and the Anesthesia
Council for the Greater Charlotte Region.
Deeply grateful for the unwavering
support of his wife, LeeMarie, and
the dedicated team at Northeast
Anesthesia, Dr. Benshoff attributes his
achievements to the collaborative spirit
of his colleagues and the commitment of
the Atrium Health Cabarrus team. Their
shared dedication enhances the quality
of patient care, affirming that success is
a collective effort. Through his journey in
medicine, Dr. Matthew Benshoff continues
to inspire those around him, embodying
the qualities of a rising star in the medical
community.
We extend our congratulations to both
Dr. Joseph Stegman and Dr. Matthew
Benshoff for the dedication, talent, and
time they provide to our patients here
in Cabarrus County and Atrium Health
Cabarrus. To read more information

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Dear Friends of the Foundation,
On behalf of the Foundation Board of Directors, the Gala
Co-Chairs, the Gala Committee, and our Foundation team,
we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your presence and
support at this year’s 28th Annual Gala in Las Vegas. On
Saturday, April 12, we welcomed over 400 supporters, all
united by a common passion for raising funds for Atrium
Health Cabarrus. For more than 30 years, your contributions have helped
our Foundation raise over $60 million, where every dollar stays right here at
Atrium Health Cabarrus for the medical needs of our community.
This year’s Gala Co-Chairs—Paula Holland, Kimberly Leatherman, LeeAnn
Miller, and Nancy Patel—were instrumental in making the event a success.
They dedicated countless hours and shared their talents with our Foundation
in creating a true Las Vegas theme. We are deeply grateful for their
leadership and guidance throughout the event.
Congratulations to Dr. Joseph Stegman, the recipient of this year’s 2025
Lillibridge Outstanding Physician Award. For over a decade, Lillibridge
has partnered with Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation and Atrium Health
Cabarrus to honor a physician who demonstrates exceptional leadership and
unwavering service to our hospital and community. Dr. Stegman has devoted
over 30 years to our pediatric patients as our Pediatric Behavioral Physician,
and we are immensely thankful for his service to Cabarrus.
A special thank you goes out to our outstanding Presenting, Platinum, Gold,
Silver, Bronze, and Copper Sponsors, as well as our live and silent auction
donors, and all our guests. It was a privilege to celebrate the Foundation and
YOU for your support over these past 30 years.
The growth of our hospital is because of your support. In 1937, when
our hospital began with 46 beds and eight doctors, we have grown to
accommodate 457 beds, with over 500 affiliated physicians and nearly
4,000 teammates. This remarkable growth is a testament to your unwavering
support. Today, the Foundation is focused on programs and equipment that
position our hospital as a leader in the healthcare industry.
Each of you plays a crucial role in shaping Atrium Health Cabarrus into what
it is today. Because of your support, our Foundation, our hospital, and our
community will continue to grow and thrive for many more years to come!
Gratefully,
Charlie Sastoque, President
Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation

THIRD PARTY FUNDRAISERS

over $9,500. During this event, more than 200 community members, stroke
survivors and their families, along with doctors and staff from Atrium Health
Cabarrus, came together to run or walk and promote awareness about stroke.
One of the highlights of this event is cheering on our stroke survivors as they
cross the finish line during the Stroke Survivors Walk. The funds raised each
year contribute to our Stroke Support Group at Atrium Health Cabarrus,
which is one of the largest stroke support groups in the state of North
Carolina. Congratulations to our Board Member, Susan Bare, who participated
