COMPETITION

Festival fever

IT’S FESTIVAL SEASON ONCE AGAIN AS LICHFIELD FESTIVAL TAKES OVER

THE CITY FROM JULY 8 TO 20. AMY NORBURY CHATS TO FESTIVAL DIRECTOR

DAMIAN THANTREY - AND YOU COULD WIN TICKETS TO STRICTLY COME DANCING STAR

NEIL JONES’ NEW SHOW GINGERLAND, WHICH PREMIERES AT THE FESTIVAL

Now’s the time to plan for summer as Lichfield

Festival fills your diary with an eclectic array of

music and dance, theatre and comedy, literary and

family events, all taking place across the city in July.

With a brand-new dance show created exclusively

for Lichfield by Strictly Come Dancing star Neil

Jones, and headline acts including folk superstars

The Unthanks and former Spandau Ballet

frontman and celebrated solo artist Tony Hadley

performing in the Cathedral, Lichfield Festival

has pulled out all the stops to make this summer’s

event more spectacular than ever. We caught up

with Festival director Damian Thantrey to find out

more:

How long does it take to pull together such

a comprehensive programme and how does

it all come together?

That’s a tricky one as there are usually two

Festivals – the next one and the one afterwards –

on the desk rolling around together! Planning for

each summer pretty much starts as soon as the

previous year’s programme is confirmed – so, as we

knew the full 2025 programme by last Christmas,

I’d already started early planning for summer 2026

this spring. One of the most important things each

year is to get the Cathedral programme in place –

by far our largest venue! – and, once that is done

and I know which type of event will be showcased

STRICTLY’S NEIL JONES DEBUTS HIS NEW SHOW

GINGERLAND AT THE FESTIVAL

LICHFIELD CATHEDRAL PROVIDES A STUNNING

BACKDROP TO FESTIVAL SHOWS

there each evening, I can then start to look for

contrasting things in our other equally great spaces.

I try to have as much variety as I can across both

the full 11 days and within each day itself – so, from

the various ideas I have, and pitches that I receive

from artists/managers, I then put together what

is effectively a massive jigsaw… and it usually just

about fits together at the end (with a strong eye on

the budget too, of course!).

Who was the first big act to come on board

for this year’s line-up?

That would be Strictly’s wonderful and extremely

lovely Neil Jones and his brand-new, world premiere

dance spectacular, Gingerland. Neil’s worked with

us before, premiering his show Somnium in 2018,

and it’s been wonderful to collaborate with him

THE UNTHANKS ARE ONE OF

DAMIAN THANTREY’S FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS

again. He’s such an all-round talent… a worldchampion

dancer and choreographer, of course,

but this time around he’s designed the show himself

and even written some of the brand-new score for it!

His enthusiasm knows no bounds and we’re so lucky

that we were his first choice to create this show,

before he takes it on tour in 2026/7.

What do you think makes Lichfield Festival

such a special event for the city?

I’ve been very lucky to be involved with the Festival

since 2015, as a visiting producer to begin with,

before becoming Artistic and then Festival Director

from 2018 onwards. Every year, I’m amazed by

the love and enthusiasm for the Festival from the

Lichfield Festival Friends, our wider audience and

our huge legion of volunteers. I know for many it’s

a highlight of their

year and I hope I’m

able to do that in-built

passion justice each

year with the quality

of the artists we can

bring in. Lichfield is

also a city with an

audience that knows a

lot about an incredibly

wide variety of things

– that means we can be

equally broad with the

programming and so,

within reason, pretty

much anything is on

the table, and there

really is (or should be!)

something for everyone

to come and enjoy.

CARDUCCI STRING QUARTET. PICTURE BY TOM BARNES

What is your

personal highlight

of this year’s

Festival?

Alongside Neil’s show,

I’m really looking

forward to having

The Unthanks in the

Cathedral. I’ve been

trying to get them to

Lichfield for quite a

few years now and am

delighted it’s finally

all worked out for

2025. Away from the

Cathedral, Joe Stilgoe

will dazzle and amaze

at The Hub, Lichfield’s

very own superstar,

Katie Arnstein, will doubtless make me laugh and

cry (as always) in her second new commission for

us… and, the big kid in me is looking forward to

seeing Paperback Theatre’s brand-new Wizard of

Oz with a ‘Brummie’ twist!

Who would be your dream Festival act?

Oh gosh…are you giving me a blank cheque? Well,

the beauty of this Festival is that we do pretty much

anything so, for music, I’m going to pick a megawatt

singer – Barbra Streisand or Dame Shirley Bassey;

for a star comedy turn, Billy Connolly (or somehow

commune with the spirit of Victoria Wood); and for

a guest speaker, how about ‘An interview with Mo

Salah’ - which might give the game away that I’m a

currently very happy Liverpool fan…

The Festival Programme

Lichfield Cathedral is the stunning backdrop for

renowned bass-baritone Sir Willard White and

Brodsky Quartet who join forces for an unforgettable

evening of classics from the Great American

Songbook to the magic of Sinatra. It’s also the venue

for jazz royalty Jacqui Dankworth and her Trio with

the Carducci Quartet. They’re touring their recently

released album Windmills which features brilliant

arrangements of timeless classics by the likes of

Sondheim, Legrand, Bernstein and more.

Elsewhere across the Festival venues, pianist, singer

and raconteur Joe Stilgoe returns after last year’s

Festival triumph with both a late-night solo show and

an evening with his trio, while folk legend and former

Show of Hands front-man Steve Knightley appears

as part of a much anticipated solo tour. Historian and

Festival Patron Tracy Borman takes an indepth

look at the Tudor artist Holbein; standup

comedian-turned-author, Mark Watson,

showcases both talents in a double bill; and

Lichfield’s own award-winning writer and

performer, Katie Arnstein, presents her brand

new comedy, specially created for the Festival.

Look out too for the Festival’s daily series

of Young Artists recitals showcasing truly

exceptional talent, up close in an intimate

setting. And another captivating young

musician, pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason,

closes this year’s Lichfield Festival with an

atmospheric candlelit concert in Lichfield

Cathedral.

As one of the country’s biggest multi-arts

festivals, Lichfield packs in almost 60 different

events and is supported across the local community.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore the world-class

artists, new talent and local voices on offer. A new

discounted ticket initiative for Under 30s, carers and

more is also launched this year, thanks to Audience

Development Partner, Executive Carers.

And don’t forget to join the party as the Festival

Fireworks make a show-stopping climax, free to all at

Beacon Park on Saturday, July 19.

Lichfield Festival runs from July 8 to 20. For

more details and to book tickets visit www.

lichfieldfestival.org or call the Box Office on

01543 306271.

TRAVEL

Luxury summer

holidays with a twist

RB COLLECTION’S AWARD-WINNING TEAM HAND-PICK THEIR

TOP TIPS FOR AN ORIGINAL SUMMER LUXURY GETAWAY

LUXURY TRAIN TRAVEL IS BECOMING AN INCREASINGLY POPULAR HOLIDAY OPTION

This year we are noticing more clients moving away

from the typical beach holiday as they seek more

authentic destinations, or enriching experiences for

all groups including families. While many still love

some R&R on the beach, trends are leaning towards

the opportunities each destination offers as opposed

to just nice pools and white sandy beaches.

We have put our heads together and created our

list of trending destinations based on our clients’

bookings and our current observations in the travel

industry.

One of the biggest shifts is towards train travel. More

clients are opting to travel to popular spots such as

the Italian Lakes or Southern Spain by train. For

example, you can depart from London St Pancras

at breakfast time and enjoy dinner in Barcelona the

same day with a change of train in Paris.

We have been tailor-making trips like these for a few

years now and they are increasingly popular. Clients

are utilising stops in Barcelona, Madrid, Sevilla,

Cordoba, Granada (for the Alhambra Palace) and

also Malaga. Some opt to combine train with a

flight home, or come back via another route where

possible.

This slower paced travel allows time to soak up more

local scenery and relax in less cramped environments

while avoiding airports as much as possible. Another

popular route is London to Paris, down to Geneva,

Milan and the Italian Lakes. Oliver will be onboard

the Glacier Express in Switzerland this summer

which is another popular train route, taking in the

breathtaking scenery and offering an alternative to a

beach holiday.

LUXURIOUS VILLAS AT THE ONE&ONLY KÉA ISLAND RESORT IN GREECE

This year also saw the launch of a new luxury train,

the La Dolce Vita Orient-Express. Based in Rome,

this new retro style luxurious train offers short one

and two night trips all over Italy including Venice

and Portofino, and even down to Sicily using the

innovative train ferry service.

Hotel group Accor is behind the new venture which

has LVMH as its partner, showing the commitment

to the travel industry by one of the world’s biggest

luxury goods groups. Accor has also opened the first

of many new Orient Express hotels, La Minerva in

Rome, which will play host to passengers pre and post

their luxury rail adventures.

Offering more space on board than Belmond’s

Venice-Simplon Orient-Express, La Dolce Vita is a

luxury train for a new generation who are moving

away from that bygone era of luxury and demanding

more comfort and style.

Italy’s popularity over the past few years has been

overwhelming, pushing prices up beyond levels ever

seen before for destinations such as Sicily, which

have attracted popularity following TV shows such

as The White Lotus. Over tourism has also become

a challenge during peak times and so we have been

hunting out some alternatives to offer our clients.

Nathan will be visiting Montenegro this summer,

following Oliver’s visit last year. From stunning

mirror-like waters in Kotor Bay to beautiful mountain

regions, Montenegro is fast becoming a strong rival

to the Italian Lakes with much lower prices and fewer

crowds.

Hotel brands such as Regent, One&Only, Chedi and

Aman have all invested in the country and we will

no doubt see more development, albeit with strict

building controls to protect the beautiful landscapes.

If beaches are more your thing, Oku are opening

their newest property in Andalusia, Southern Spain,

this July. This will be their fourth property after

Ibiza, Kos and Bodrum and these are good options

if you are looking for a laid-back luxury hotel with

a hint of Japanese minimalism design. Aiming

more towards a younger demographic in these key

vibrant destinations, it will be interesting to see the

progression of the Oku properties around the Med.

On the same coast just up the road is the new

Fairmont La Hacienda Costa del Sol. A more

traditional resort complex, this property opened in

THE MALTESE CAPITAL IS UNDERGOING

SOMETHING OF A RENAISSANCE

February this year and comes with its own golf club,

and is just 20 minutes from the SO/ Sotogrande Spa

and Golf Resort Hotel, offering more recreational

opportunities nearby.

Marbella and Malaga are just up the coast to the

north and Gibraltar is around 40 minutes south so

there are plenty of flights for easy access too. Our

favourite spot on the coast is Marbella Club, a great

location and with a nice seafront walk both

into Marbella and Puerto Banus. The area is

popular for shopping, sports and exploration

with the picturesque historic town of Ronda

within easy reach too.

Nathan will be visiting another new luxury

hotel this summer, this time in Greece. The

One&Only Kéa Island is 45 mins by speedboat

from Athens and is tipped as one of THE

new glamourous hideaways for the summer

season. Accommodations come in the form

of exclusive private pool villas and, given

One&Only’s reputation as one of the most

luxurious hotel brands in the world, this will no

doubt be in high demand following its grand

opening this spring.

Further afield, we have been sending more

families to Mauritius for their summer

holiday as stays here during school holidays

in particular can be a fraction of the price. As

an Indian Ocean tropical island, there are also

more culturally diverse opportunities for you

to experience, and while it is a longer flight,

you can easily break the journey in Doha, Abu

Dhabi or Dubai with a stop-over and utilise flights

from local airports around the UK.

Other far away destinations with good weather

during the school holiday season are Bali and

Borneo in Malaysia, again both offering interesting

cultural experiences such as temples, wildlife and

a more tropical environment. These resonate with

the increasing trend for more enriching holiday

experiences for families too.

Short breaks continue to be popular. The capital of

Malta, Valletta, has seen quite a renaissance in recent

years and while it can be rather busy during the main

summer season, if you want an early or late summer

break, we can highly recommend it.

Oliver was recently there and was really impressed

with how much investment the island has made to

preserve its historic city centre. The Grandmasters

Palace has undergone a major refurbishment, for

example, and is a must-see.

There are some lovely small boutique hotels in the

centre, some of which with roof terraces and small

pools and, with regular flights from Birmingham, it is

a good option to explore. The city has an abundance

of bars and restaurants too, full of character. To

extend your stay, why not combine with less-busy

Gozo, just a short ferry ride away.

A dreamy

duo

AS we move into the warmer months it’s all about fresh

pastel hues to give our interior spaces a much-needed

boost. And this season’s most refreshing colour pairing

comes in the form of lilac and lemon - a soft-meets-sunny

combination that brings both calm and joy to a space.

Lilac’s soft, chalky hues bring a sense of tranquility and

refinement, while lemon injects just the right amount of

zest and modern energy. Together, they create a colour

story that’s delicate yet dynamic, perfect for revitalising

living spaces with a touch of playful sophistication.

Evoking a floral feel, the lilac-and-lemon combo is the

perfect decor update for spring so expect to see the duo

across everything from sculptural ceramics and tinted

glassware to statement upholstery and sun-drenched

tablescapes.

For a bold interior scheme, use soft lemon in place of your

neutral, while adding a colour pop with sophisticated lilac

shades. Fresh, brilliant white accents across woodwork and

furniture add a clean, crisp finish to the look.

If you’re looking for a subtle way to incorporate the

colour duo, seek out prints and patterns which celebrate

both - from delicate florals to bold stripes, lilac and lemon

are made to be seen.

Community living for a happier, healthier lifestyle

When you buy an apartment in an

Adlington Retirement Community,

it’s about more than just moving to a

new home; it is about upsizing your life in

every way that matters, so you can live a

happier and healthier lifestyle. It is also

the opportunity to unburden yourself from

the responsibilities of a family home and

redirect your time and energy toward the

activities and experiences that bring you

the most pleasure.

A study from ProMatura International and

ARCO has shown that people who live

in retirement communities are happier,

healthier, and live more fulfilling lives.

The research 1 included nearly 3,000

homeowners, as well as more than 1,000

people who were considering making

the move. The joint study found that 90%

thought they’d made the move at the

right time of their lives, and 6% wished

they had moved in sooner.

No need to step outside, just enjoy the

comfort within

At Adlington Retirement Living, we take

immense pride in creating communities

where our homeowners have dedicated

support, but also the freedom and

independence to spend their quality

time doing things that matter the most.

Plus, our on-site Adlington Management

Services team are there 24-7, 365 days

a year, to make your transition to a

more worry-free life easy. They organise

the activities calendar, book special

events, arrange guest speakers and

more. With a dedicated activity studio,

beautiful private gardens, and a multiuse

restaurant * to host parties, there’s

something to suit all tastes.

Jean, an Adlington homeowner, enjoys a

busy social life: “I go swimming, I go to

Chi Ball – it’s T’ai Chi with a bit of Pilates

and a bit of Yoga. I’m making lots of

friends here.”

Adlington homeowners, Ann and Harry,

add: “It’s good having things in the same

building because you’ve only got to pop

downstairs. We spend lots of time in the

coffee lounge and homeowners’ lounge.

If anybody wants to chat, they go and sit

in the coffee lounge. You’re never short of

somebody to talk to. I’ve never laughed

so much since I came here. It’s just

wonderful. We’re laughing all the time.”

Raw

beauty

RAW, refined, and ready to reshape interiors — the

Stone Age trend is all about grounding our spaces with

the enduring beauty of natural materials. From veined

marble and smooth quartz to hand-moulded clay and

rugged stone finishes, this look invites the outdoors

in, celebrating textures that are tactile, timeless, and

inherently calming.

Add stone touches to your interiors through accent

furniture and accessories - tables are a great place to

make an impact here.

Take the trend to the max by embracing ‘stone

drenching’ - 2025’s answer to the popular colour

drenching trends of seasons past. Stone drenching

sees rooms covered in statement stone, for a cohesive

look which creates the perfect balance of bold and

sophisticated.

While bathrooms are the obvious place to incorporate

stone drenching, it can pack a punch in other areas

of the home too. In the kitchen, you can extend stone

worktops to create breakfast bar or island units, as well

as opting for matching stone flooring, splashbacks or

even statement wall features to create a dramatic

yet timeless feel.

Seasonal delights

LICHFIELD CHEF JACK DUBBERLEY, OWNER OF PRIVATE FINE DINING EXPERIENCE DUBBERLEY

DELICIOUS, TAKES A LOOK AT THE BEST PRODUCE TO GROW, FORAGE FOR AND USE RIGHT NOW.

The weather is continuing to play havoc with

produce, with unseasonably warm and dry

conditions meaning many things are coming in

early - if at all.

“We’ve had such a mild winter and such a dry

and warm spring that it’s really causing issues

with fruit and veg production,” says Lichfield

chef Jack Dubberley, of Dubberley Delicious.

“Wild garlic would normally go well into May

but it’s done already. The warm weather we’ve

had over the past couple of weeks have meant it’s

already gone to flower, so wild garlic capers will

be the next thing to come out and that’ll be it.

But you have to time it just right with the capers,

because often when they’re ready the wind will

take them out - so we’re keeping everything

crossed that we’re able to get capers this year!

“Asparagus has been so early too, by at least a

month even in Lichfield, and we’ve already had

tomatoes on the menu - they’re early because

they’re getting all the sunlight they need. And

strawberries are ready too in Lichfield, although

I’d recommend waiting a bit for the strawberries

to bed in if you want the best produce.

LICHFIELD CHEF JACK DUBBERLEY

ELDERFLOWER IS IN ABUNDANCE RIGHT NOW

“The dilemma for farmers is that, while things

will be earlier, they’ll finish earlier too, so they

have to decide whether to force produce and keep

picking it to prolong the season, or to let it go so

it can recover and keep some energy - otherwise

they risk not having a good crop next year.

“It’s hard for us when we’re planning menus as

we’ve had to reduce how far in advance we can

create menus because we don’t know what will

and won’t be available; something might be in

season one week but then it’s gone.”

The knock-on effect of production difficulties

will mean prices for fruit and veg look set to soar

as the year goes on - which is, says Jack, a great

reason to start growing your own produce where

you can.

“There’s so much unpredictability with

availability and prices so where you can, it’s great

to grow your own produce,” says Jack.

“You can control things much easier when you’re

growing at a small scale, you can keep on top of

watering as much as needed, and hopefully you’ll

end up with a steady supply of the fresh produce

that you know you’ll use.

“You don’t have to have masses of space, but

if you use your space in the right way you can

create an efficient flow of produce to keep you

going through the seasons. There’s a great book

called Veg In One Bed which talks you through

exactly what to grow and when, and in what order to

plant things to get the most out of your space.”

If you’re looking for freely available seasonal

produce, then scouring the hedgerows and fields

could prove fruitful.

“The sun’s been out so elderflower is the thing to

forage for now,” says Jack.

“Elderflower can be a difficult one if you struggle

with hayfever because of the intense pollen, but if

you’re ok to pick it, it’s a great one to try. The flavour

is so strong and you can do so many things with it;

you can make vinegar to use in salads, you can make

wine or cordial, we’ve seen an elderflower Turkish

Delight, and previously we’ve done an elderflower

honey.

“There’s so much of it to be found locally, along the

roadside - the best time to pick it is when it’s warm,

still and in the evening - and if you do suffer with

hayfever then I’d recommend wearing a mask!”

While mushroom foraging can be a risky business if

you’re not confident with identification, there’s one

pricey type of mushroom which is easy to spot and

can be found in some rather unexpected places.

“Morels are really obvious-looking so if you do find

them, definitely give them a try,” says Jack. “They’re

pretty rare, which means they’re expensive to buy,

but you may get lucky and spot some. They’re often

found in bark chippings so keep your eyes peeled in

places like supermarket verges and car parks because

DUBBERLEY DELICIOUS HAVE RECENTLY

LAUNCHED SUNDAY LUNCH DATES

you never know!

“Mushrooms are decomposers so they’re found

where organic matter is rotting, so compost heaps are

another place you might find them - and if you’re

lucky you might even have some growing in your

garden.”

At Dubberley Delicious, showcasing the very best

available produce is key - and what better way to

introduce diners to the Dubberley way than to take

on that most quintessential of British meals - Sunday

lunch. With dates now available to book throughout

summer for parties of between six and 15 guests,

expect an elevated lunchtime experience featuring an

array of snacks and chef ’s small bites, roast sirloin of

beef with traditional trimmings and seasonal sides,

plus a classic dessert to finish proceedings.

Jack says: “This is our take on an absolute classic,

done in true Dubberley style to elevate Sunday lunch

to something really special.”

A memorable meal

BIRMINGHAM CHEF AND MASTERCHEF: THE PROFESSIONALS 2021

WINNER DAN LEE SHARES A FAMILY CLASSIC

Dan says: “A beloved family favourite, this dish has

always been close to home. My mum, though raised

in an English-Irish household, developed a deep

love for Cantonese food after marrying my dad. Her

absolute go-to was always beef in black bean sauce—

whether it was a family gathering or a Friday night

takeaway. Once I became a chef, I was determined

to learn the dish properly. My auntie passed down

the recipe from our family takeaway, and through

years of refining it, I’ve tailored it to perfectly match

my mum’s taste. It’s now a staple in my own kitchen

- full of flavour, memory, and meaning.”

Beef with Green

Peppers in Black

Bean Sauce

Ingredients: serves four

For the beef marinade:

400g beef rump or sirloin, thinly sliced

against the grain

1 tbsp light soy sauce

1 tsp dark soy sauce

1 tsp oyster sauce

1 tsp Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)

1 tsp sesame oil

1 tsp cornflour

1/4 tsp MSG (optional)

For the stir-fry:

2 tbsp neutral oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

1-inch piece of ginger, finely chopped

2 tbsp fermented black beans, rinsed and

lightly crushed OR 2–3 tbsp store-bought

black bean sauce

1 large onion, sliced

2 green peppers, sliced

100ml chicken stock or water

1 tbsp oyster sauce

1 tbsp light soy sauce

1 tsp dark soy sauce

1 tsp sugar

1/4 tsp MSG (optional)

1 tsp cornflour mixed with 1 tbsp water

(slurry)

Method

In a bowl, combine the beef with all

marinade ingredients. Mix well and marinate

for 20–30 minutes.

In a small bowl, mix the chicken stock,

oyster sauce, light and dark soy sauces,

sugar, and MSG (if using). Set aside.

Heat 2 tbsp oil in a hot wok. Add garlic,

ginger, and black beans (or black bean

sauce). Stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant.

Add onion and green peppers. Cook for

2–3 minutes until slightly tender, but still

FINANCE

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Wealth Matters

A BI-MONTHLY LOOK AT THE WORLD OF FINANCE FROM LICHFIELD

FINANCIAL ADVISER KEVIN JENKINS APFS, CERT CII(MP)

PENSIONS AND RETIREMENT PLANNING –

REMEMBER THESE ARE YOUR MONIES

This month we focus on the often considered complex world of

pensions. In order to try to demystify this a little we cover some

key aspects.

A pension is, essentially, a deferment of income now for the

future (most commonly used in retirement). The tax advantages

vary, though in a nutshell, putting money into your pension is

a tax efficient way of saving even if you have some tax to pay

when you look at accessing it in the future.

In simple terms, £1 in pay today for a higher rate taxpayer

could be 58p in your pocket. 58p in your pension has an extra

42p to grow until you take your pension benefits.

It is difficult to conceive what investment/s could get 58p

back to £1 instantly. This isn’t even considering the effects of

compounded returns during the years you are invested.

INVESTMENT CONSIDERATIONS – RISKS AND

POTENTIAL REWARDS

Many people who save into a pension, personally or by Auto-

Enrolment, will be invested in investments funds which invest in

various types of underlying assets like shares, bonds or property.

It is a sad reality that few ever review this and when they do get

interested, often near retirement, it is too late as the ship has

probably sailed.

SHARES: An equity stake in a company and entitles the

shareholder to dividends, where payable. The value of the share

fluctuates based on many factors. These factors include the

fortunes of the company (good or bad), stock market conditions

and even geopolitical events or natural disasters. Shares can

be held in large companies, small companies and overseas

companies, where fluctuations in currencies also affect the level

of risks.

BONDS: Also known as Fixed Interest securities, these are

essentially loans to companies or governments. The investor/

lender lends the money in return for a coupon or interest

payment for a fixed period. This period is the duration and

the longer the duration the more potential risk there is. This

is because many things can change between the start date

and the end of this duration/term. One large factor in these

investments is credit worthiness of who the money is lent to.

Higher interest payments can be secured when lending in a low

credit rating environment BUT the risk of partial or full default

(some or all of the original loan is lost) is greater, for obvious

reasons.

COMMERCIAL PROPERTY: Including office blocks,

retail parks etc. These generate rental income to the investors.

Appetite for this investment medium has changed in the

past decade or so with flexible home working, conferencing

technology and of course the Covid-19 pandemic.

Key is understanding that the mixture of the above investment

types will affect the risk and potential rewards you may

experience. This will vary over time due to market conditions

and personal circumstances, such as approaching the point

when pension benefits will be accessed.

OTHER THINGS TO KNOW

Pension savings are YOUR savings. They can pass down the

generations, sometimes free of inheritance tax and income tax

for the beneficiaries.

Tax treatment of death benefits vary depending on the age at

which you pass away, the value of your pension savings and how

the benefits are inherited by your beneficiaries.

It is beyond the scope of this article to cover all the

permutations, though as a rule of thumb the income tax

savings and flexibility you can enjoy are very strong reasons to

maximise, wherever possible.

Business owners can potentially use pension funds to purchase

the premises from which they trade using a Self Invested

Personal Pension or a Small Self Administered Pension. This

can be of huge benefit, where suitable.

TO SUMMARISE

Make sure you maximise your pension savings opportunities.

Ensure you understand HOW you are invested and match the

investment risk to your needs. Understand how the benefits

would pass to your next of kin.

As always…. please take professional advice and ensure you

maximise your savings. Remember, it is YOUR savings, it is

YOUR money.

The value of pensions with St. James’s Place will be directly

linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value

can go down as well as up. You may get back less than you

invested.

SIPPS will not be suitable for everybody and generally only

those who are fairly experienced at actively managing their

investment should consider this type of investment. There are

strict rules on what property can be held in and how when using

a Self Invested Personal Pension or A Small Self Administered

Scheme (SSAS).

The level and basis of taxation and reliefs from taxation can

change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on

individual circumstances.

Auto Enrolment and SSAS products are NOT regulated by the

Financial Conduct Authority.

FASHION

Red hot summer

AS WE HEAD INTO THE WARMER MONTHS, THE FASHION SET’S FAVOURITE HUES START

TO SHOW SOME HEAT AS RED HOT STYLE COMES TO THE FORE, SAYS AMY NORBURY

IF you’re on the lookout for a standout

shade to brighten up your wardrobe after

the recent dominance of sensible neutrals,

SS25 is delivering in spades. While pretty

pink hues led the way at the start of the season,

as the mercury starts to rise, the colour

du jour gets hotter too.

Red is having somewhat of a redemption as

we make the tentative move into summer,

offering the perfect antidote to the still-grey

skies and threats of rain on the horizon.

The mood-boosting hue is great for adding

a splash of dopamine to your everyday

basics, as well as offering the perfect look-atme

vibe for occasion dressing.

Bold, spicy and full of confidence, the

colour featured heavily on SS25 runways,

with Bottega Veneta showcasing a mix of

red hues, while Louis Vuitton and Proenza

Schouler went for a style statement with

occasionwear to remember. Wallflowers

need not apply; this is a shade which

screams to be seen.

Jump headfirst into the trend with head-totoe

saturation for a failsafe fashion formula.

Opt for a co-ord set or mix and match

textures to add interest, and keep the look

going with matching jewellery, shoes and

more. Top your outfit off with a pair of red

sunnies for the ultimate in cool-girl chic.

If you want to stand out at your next

summer soiree, a red dress is just the ammo

you need in your style arsenal. Soften the

look by leaning into some of those superfeminine

elements which are making waves

this season; tulle skirts, lace and ruffles are

all stylish big-hitters this season.

For a more subtle nod, opt for red

accessories to add a pop of drama to your

outfit. Red tights offer a budget-friendly

update to your look, or you could splash

out on one statement piece - bright red

arm candy or footwear are both a worthy

investment for a fashion knockout.

BEAUTY

Naked attraction

DO YOU DARE TO BARE? EMBRACE YOUR NATURAL STATE WITH BARELY-THERE BEAUTY

WHICH ENHANCES YOUR LOOK WITH MINIMUM EFFORT, SAYS AMY NORBURY

FOR too long, barely-there beauty has meant undertaking

a labour-intensive make-up regime to create a

perfectly curated ‘natural’ look - all designed to look

like you’ve just rolled out of bed looking fabulous.

Well, as 2025 gets into full swing it’s time to rejoice -

because this is the year that effortless beauty reallmeans

just that.

We’re talking polish-free manicures, fuss-free hair

and, mostly, makeup-free faces. It’s time to ditch the

overblown beauty regimes and opt for an au naturel

finish.

When it comes to hair, embrace your natural texture,

whether that’s wavy, curly, coiled or straight. That

means no laborious heat styling and minimal product,

just hair that is healthy, happy and effortless.

Opt for products which are tailored to work with -

not against - your hair’s natural state. Your Airwrap

addiction ends here.

For faces, kick-start your natural glow with moisturising,

glow-boosting creams to add radiance and life

to your complexion. And putting emphasis on great

skincare means makeup can truly be phased out (or

at least heavily reduced) when it comes to your daily

routine.

For minimal effort, a few well-chosen steps are all

you need. Curl your lashes and add a hint of mascara—30

seconds and your eyes are instantly more

awake. Brows are another must—they frame your

face and bring polish even when you’re wearing

the bare minimum so a quick brush-through with a

tinted gel or some definition to the arches makes all

the difference.

Turning chaos into calm

KATIE BUCKENHAM, FOUNDER OF ORGANISE WITH STYLE, HELPS CLIENTS ACROSS THE MIDLANDS

TO TRANSFORM CLUTTERED HOMES INTO CALMING, FUNCTIONAL AND PERFECTLY ORGANISED SPACES

As the adage states: “A place for everything, and

everything in its place,” - and this is the cornerstone

of home organisation specialist Katie Buckenham’s

business, Organise With Style.

Katie says: “I’m a professional home organiser,

certified KonMari® consultant, and interior stylist,

helping to restore order, clarity and style to homes

across the Midlands and Staffordshire.

“After 13 years practising as a successful solicitor, I

made the bold decision to step away from the legal

world and pursue a career that truly sparks joy for

me: helping people transform their homes into calm,

functional, and beautifully organised spaces.

“I know how overwhelming the clutter of modern life

can be. As a busy wife and mother of two, I deeply

understand the emotional and physical toll that

disorganisation can have on a home. My approach

blends empathy and practicality, providing realistic,

stylish solutions tailored to each client’s lifestyle.”

Katie’s work is rooted in the KonMari® Method, a

philosophy created by the Japanese organising guru,

Marie Kondo, which encourages mindful decluttering

by category rather than location.

Katie adds: “As part of my certification, I completed

a full house declutter, known as a ‘Tidying Festival’, in

my own home - an invaluable experience that allows

me to guide clients through their own journeys with

genuine insight and authenticity.”

Katie’s clients consistently speak of the positive

impact of Organise With Style’s services. One client,

Vivienne, said: “Working with Katie was life changing.

She has helped bring clarity and calm to my life. I can

100% recommend Katie; she is not only an expert on

organising but also lovely to work alongside.”

And Isabelle added: “Working with Katie has been

a total dream. She is meticulous in all she does. My

house is organised to perfection, everything has a

place, and the calmness feels restored.”

From reorganising busy kitchens, transforming chaotic

playrooms and streamlining overflowing wardrobes

to helping clients move home, Katie’s services can

support clients with all of their decluttering needs.

Katie says: “I am a strong advocate for decluttering

before putting a house on the market or boxing up

your belongings. Being on hand post-move to unpack

and put organisational systems in place from the very

start is also incredibly popular, where I help clients to

settle into their new home as quickly as possible after

what can be an incredibly stressful period.

“For me, organising isn’t just about tidying—it’s about

creating spaces that reflect who my clients are and

how they want to live, and my interior styling expertise

ensures the end result is as visually pleasing as it is

functional. When your home feels good, life feels

lighter.”

With warmth, precision, and a designer’s eye, Katie

helps her clients turn chaos into calm, one beautifully

organised space at a time.

its charm. Those who make their way there may

Adrian, remembered with fondness, had a knack

for making people feel at ease, and that warmth

and generosity of spirit is still at the very heart of

SMILECRAFTERS IS LOCATED IN BURNTWOOD

identity for global style. Championing lineage and

artisanal craftsmanship, core collections are designed

for functional homes, washed with a warm ambience

and subtly earth-connected style. Frato, Laskasas,

Domkapa, and Wewood place pride in quiet luxury

that invites slow living.

The artistic agenda of lighting associates Porta

Romana, Bella Figura, Rock and Soar, Bert Frank and

Heathfield Lighting offer ornate objects for aesthetic

aficionados seeking key investment pieces, cultivating

chic and sophisticated interiors.

Partnering with professional carriers and installers

specialising in furniture, fixtures, and equipment

design, Kartar & Seibo meticulously form and appoint

products that align to your vision and lifestyle. With 18

years of manufacturing and retailing experience via

their brand, Style Our Home, Kartar & Seibo invite an

individualised approach, allowing you to capture your

perfect home.
