Acknowledgements
I would like to thank the members of this consortium and especially John Boyd for creating
this opportunity. The creation of Winds of Mars was incredibly fun and rewarding for me as
a composer. The consortium members allowed me complete freedom to explore the idea
of incorporating original NASA recordings of wind on Mars. It was such fun to adapt the
original recordings as well as manipulate them into new and unique sound designs. I am
sincerely grateful to have been provided the freedom to explore various performance
techniques, compositional skills, and sound design that I was allowed during the creation
of this new work. Sincerely, thank you.
Program Notes
Winds of Mars was commissioned with the goal of incorporating original audio recorded
on Mars by the NASA Perseverance Rover with textures of the modern concert band.
After listening to the original recordings of sound on Mars, I was inspired with the
characteristics of the various forms of wind. It seemed that I was hearing more than one
characteristic, I was hearing several. I heard a dry and desolate wind, a playful and quick
dust devil, a grand and booming wind, and a soaring and penetrating wind. All of these
personifications of wind can be heard in Winds of Mars.
Performance Notes
Wind players should imitate the sound of wind using the airstream
through instruments. Percussion players should imitate the sound of wind using only the
airstream.
Players should imitate the sound of the syllable in quotation
marks. There should be NO TONE while making this sound.
Players should imitate the sound of the syllable in quotation
marks, crescendo to the end of the note, then stop the sound
using the tongue at the back of the teeth. This should create an
abrupt stop. There should be NO TONE while making this sound.
About the Composer
Jennifer E. Rose (b. 1978) is an American composer, sound
designer, audio editor, and music educator based in
Joplin, Missouri. A former Oklahoma band director of 15
years, Rose is passionate about engaging students
through performance. Her compositions are full of drama
and intensity while maintaining an accessibility that even
the smallest of ensembles can successfully perform. Lately,
her genre-breaking scores that incorporate electronic
sound design and acoustic instrumental elements have
garnered the attention of ensemble directors worldwide.
Prior to her full-time composition career, Mrs. Rose was a
band director serving as the Director of Bands for
Wyandotte Public Schools in Wyandotte, Oklahoma. Her experiences as a small school
director drive her commitment to arranging for small ensembles and composing
contemporary concert music that is accessible to all types of ensemble instrumentations.
Jennifer holds a Professional Artist Certificate in Composition and a Master’s degree in
Composition & Technology from the North Carolina School of the Arts as well as a
Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the University of Arkansas.
