Biggesee-Listersee nature experience area in the
Sauerland. The region impresses with picturesque
meadow valleys and the densely wooded low mountain
range which attracts hikers and nature lovers
alike.
A well-developed network of cycle paths with many
varied tours and around 320 km of excellently marked
hiking trails invite vacation guests to actively experience
the beauty of nature. Whether leisurely walks
through the meadows or more challenging routes
through the hilly forests - there is something for
everyone here.
After an eventful day there are cozy guesthouses

funfair with its diverse funfair, exciting rides and impressive
animal shows.
And this is just a small selection of the numerous

A remarkable cultural spectrum of tradition, present,
cultural history and modernity opens up to visitors in
the Wenden region:

Our tips:
The Wenden Ironworks “Wendener Hütte” is a
technical cultural monument with an ironworks and
hammer mill as well as a museum on the history of
iron.
The pilgrimage chapel of “Dörnschlade” was built in
the middle of the 19th century. The miraculous image,
a depiction of Mary with the child, is attributed to the
Renaissance. A hermitage was built in the immediate
vicinity in 1865.
The funfair in Wenden is the largest folk festival with
an animal show in South Westphalia and has been
held since 1752.
The Source of Bigge is located near the district of
Römershagen and fills one of the largest reservoirs
in Germany after 16 km.

beautiful old churches and picturesque chapels as
well as a museum on the history of iron.
The Wenden Ironworks is a technical cultural monument
and one of the oldest surviving ironworks in
Germany.
Close to the border with Siegerland and on one of the
highest points of the countryside of Wenden, between
the villages of Altenhof, Hünsborn and Wenden, lies
the pilgramage chapel “Marienkapelle Dörnschlade”.
The place of pilgrimage is first mentioned in a document
from 1414 and has been a popular attraction
ever since for pilgrims and as well as for people from
the surrounding area who come to pause for a short
prayer and light a small candle.
The Lake Biggesee has its source in the Wenden district
of Römershagen. A stream littered with coarse
stones collects the still small amount of spring water
and after 16 km fills one of Germany‘s largest reservoirs,
the Lake Biggesee. To ensure a steady flow of
water into the Ruhr river it is mainly used to store raw
water for the Ruhr area.

Biggesee passenger shipping. From mid-March to
mid-October the EMS Westfalen and the EMS Bigge
glide across the reservoir. The EMS Westfalen delights
with a variety of scheduled trips, cozy brunch
excursions and numerous events like the adventurous
children‘s pirate days. The event ship EMS Bigge,
on the other hand, is known for its spectacular dinner
shows and exuberant parties on board - an unforgettable
experience for anyone looking for special
moments on the water. Wedding ceremonies are also
possible on board.
A small drop of bitterness for dog owners: according
to the Ruhrverband‘s leisure regulations dogs
and other animals are unfortunately not allowed
to swim in the lakes Biggesee and Listersee.
Popular alternatives to swimming in the lakes are
the surrounding outdoor and indoor pools such as
the “Hallenbad Attendorn”, the “Freibad Meinerzhagen”,
the “Freibad Valbert”, the “Freizeitbad Olpe”
and the “Hallenbad Wenden”. For even more water
fun you can visit the adventure pool “Erlebnisbad
AquaMagis” in Plettenberg which is known throughout
the region.

Fishing experience
The Biggesee-Listersee nature experience area offers two breathtaking
lakes that invite anglers from near and far to enjoy fantastic experiences.
The deep waters are not only a paradise for those who appreciate the peace
and beauty of nature, but also for anglers who love to indulge in their passion.
Fish species such as eel, perch, vendace, pike, carp, lake trout, zander
and many more can be found here. The harmonious silence of the early
morning or evening hours in particular invites you to sink into yourself and
enjoy the moment to the fullest.
Fishing permits (FEV) for Lake Biggesee and Lake Listersee are required for
all those who wish to enjoy fishing in these charming surroundings. Anglers
have the option of purchasing an annual, weekly, two-day or daily license.
In addition, boats over 7 square meters in size and boats with an electric
motor require a boat sticker, combination sticker or electric motor sticker.
Rowing and paddle boats under 7 square meters do not require a boat
sticker. The boat and motorboat stickers are available monthly from April to
October or as an annual sticker.
In the Ruhrverband‘s online store www.angeln-im-sauerland.de anglers can
purchase fishing permits online for all lakes in the Sauerland and print them
out themselves. It also offers a wealth of information on all aspects of fishing.
Annual electric motor stickers for various lakes are also available in the online
store and are conveniently sent to buyers by post. The Biggesee-Listersee
Tourism Association is also a point of sale and hands out fishing permits and
boat stickers on site.
As the owner of the lakes the Ruhrverband provides information and rules
for the use of Lake Biggesee and Lake Listersee. Scan the QR code “Leisure
regulations of the Ruhrverband“.

Leisure experience
The Biggesee-Listersee nature experience area offers
a wealth of activities and sights for every taste.
A particular highlight is the breathtaking viewing platform
“BiggeBlick“, a 90-metre-high viewing platform
that offers a fascinating panoramic view of the Lake
Biggesee and the surrounding landscape. Equally impressive
are the viewing point Bühren, the observation
tower Wenden-Heid and the viweing point “Listerblick“
- all of these places invite you to enjoy the
beauty of the region in peace and quiet.
The cave “Atta-Höhle“, one of the largest stalactite
caves in Germany, is also impressive and enchants
visitors with its spectacular stalagmites and stalactites.
Those who prefer to explore the region from
the water can enjoy a leisurely trip on the Biggesee
passenger shipping and experience the picturesque
lake landscape to the fullest. Those who are interested
in history should definitely visit the old train
station “Alter Bahnof Hützemert“ and the labyrinth
in Drolshagen which promises adventure and fun for
the whole family. The majestic castle “Burg Schnellenberg“
towers over Attendorn and invites you on
a journey into the past. Another historical gem are
the hollow ways “Hohlwege Haumche“ and the nature
trail “Schlüsen-Lehrpfad“ - old trade routes dug deep
into the landscape. The historic town centers of the
surrounding towns and the castle ruins “Burgruine
Waldenburg“ bear witness to the rich history of the
region and offer exciting insights into the past.
For those interested in culture and history there are
a number of museums to discover: the “Südsauerlandmuseum“
and the fire department museum offer
exciting exhibitions while the Wenden Ironworks
provides an insight into the region‘s industrial past.
The mill “Eichener Mühle“ and the historic bone mill
“Knochenmühle Mühlhofe“ also invite you to explore.

slopes for beginners and advanced skiers in extensive terrain - ideal for skiers
and snowboarders who want to glide down the slopes. Even after work the
floodlights ensure unadulterated skiing fun. A highlight for families is the new
children‘s area with conveyor belt which introduces young ski beginners to
the world of winter sports in a playful way. If you don‘t have your own equipment
there is a ski and snowboard rental shop right next to the ski slope.
For those who are fascinated by ski jumps, a visit to the “Meinhardus Mattenschanzen“
in Meinerzhagen is well worthwhile. Watch brave ski jumpers soar
into the sky.
Fast-paced winter fun awaits families on the toboggan slope near Schallershaus

of movement.
In addition to the winter sports on offer the idyllic winter hikes in the nature
