The Pirates
of Penzance
In a nutshell:
The Pirates of Penzance follows Frederic, a young man
mistakenly apprenticed to a band of kind-hearted
pirates. As he comes of age, he resolves to leave piracy
behind and dedicate himself to capturing his former
comrades. However, his plans are thrown into disarray
when he falls for the beautiful Mabel and discovers
a legal technicality that could keep him bound to the
pirates for many years to come.
With witty lyrics, sharp satire, and unforgettable
melodies, The Pirates of Penzance is a true delight.
W. S. Gilbert’s clever libretto and Arthur Sullivan’s
sparkling score have ensured its enduring popularity,
continuing to captivate audiences with its charm,
energy, and timeless comedic brilliance.

Step into a world of enchantment
and eccentricity with this sparkling
new production of Iolanthe – one
of the most beloved of all the
Gilbert & Sullivan operas.
The incomparable Simon Butteriss
stars as the Lord Chancellor.
Meriel Cunningham takes the title
role of Iolanthe, with Felix Kemp
as Strephon – a fairy from the
waist down! Kelli-Ann Masterson
appears as Phyllis, and Gaynor
Keeble reigns as the formidable
Fairy Queen.

Iolanthe feels uncannily relevant
today. With razor-sharp wit,
Gilbert and Sullivan skewer
political privilege, outdated
institutions, and the farcical inner
workings of government.

IOLANTHE
In a nutshell:
Iolanthe is a whimsical blend of fantasy and political
satire. The story follows Strephon, a half-fairy, halfmortal
shepherd, who hopes to marry Phyllis, a ward
of the court. But their path to love is blocked by the
pompous House of Lords—most notably the Lord
Chancellor himself, who also has his eye on Phyllis.
When Strephon’s fairy heritage comes to light, the
fairies storm into Westminster, throwing the House of
Lords into delightful disarray.
In the end, love wins the day, —culminating in a joyfully
absurd finale where fantasy and politics collide in
perfect harmony.
You can see Iolanthe at

Director:
Jeff Clarke
Conductor:
John Andrews
In 2009, Jeff Clarke directed
Princess Ida at Buxton Opera
House for the National Gilbert &
Sullivan Opera Company as part
of the 15th Gilbert and Sullivan
Festival.
Jeff said, “I designed the set
myself. Paul Lazell built the tall,
monolithic slabs I envisioned, and
out-Jackson-Pollocked Jackson
Pollock with a wonderful texture
of grey and lilac abstract blobs. It
looked terrific.” And it certainly
did!
With the addition of striking
black and white costumes, the
production became a visually
stunning spectacle—unlike any Ida
seen before or since, in Buxton or
anywhere else.
We are absolutely delighted
to bring back this fabulous
production in 2025 – a show
you certainly do not want to
miss. And if you have never seen
Princess Ida before, this is your
perfect opportunity to experience
Gilbert and Sullivan at their finest.

Princess
Ida
In a nutshell:
Princess Ida is a comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan,
first performed in 1884. Based on Tennyson’s poem The
Princess, it is their only opera written in blank verse.
The story follows Prince Hilarion, betrothed in infancy
to Princess Ida, who rejects marriage and founds an
all-female university. Determined to win her, Hilarion
and his friends infiltrate the school disguised as women,
leading to comic misunderstandings and a battle of the
sexes. The opera satirizes gender roles, education, and
Victorian feminism.
With its witty libretto and engaging score, Princess Ida is
a joy and fantastic entertainment.
Don’t miss this outstanding production.
You can see Princess Ida at
Buxton Opera House on:

The Unsung Heroes of the
Festival:
The National
Festival Orchestra
“Without their remarkable talent and dedication,
there wouldn’t be a Festival at all.”
The National Festival Orchestra is the heart and soul of
every Festival performance at Buxton Opera House—
and has been part of the Festival family since the very
first event in 1994.
Under the leadership of Sally Robinson, who has been
with them from the start, the orchestra continues to
deliver outstanding music, year after year. Quite simply,
they’re exceptional. Every summer, we’re in awe of their
stamina, professionalism, and sheer endurance. Arriving
in Buxton just two days before opening night, they’re in
the pit from morning until night, adjusting to a different
conductor each day as each visiting society brings its
own musical director. With only one dress rehearsal
before every show, it’s a demanding schedule—but one
they rise to with dedication and passion.
Without this incredible team, the Festival—and our
enjoyment of these wonderful productions—just
wouldn’t be the same.
This year, we are delighted that on Friday, 15 August,
you will have the chance to see the orchestra take
centre stage in the Best of G&S Concert at 2.30 pm in
the Opera House. It’s a perfect opportunity to celebrate
their remarkable talent. And when the curtain falls at
the end of each show, don’t forget to give them the
applause they so richly deserve!
Thank you, NFO - We can’t wait to see you!.

THE FESTIVAL
AWARDS
The Festival offers leading amateur societies
the opportunity to perform on the Opera
House stage and compete for the International
Champions Trophy and a £1,000 prize, along
with a range of other awards, including Best
Voice, Best Director, and more.
Next door, in the Pavilion Arts Centre, there’s
UNIFest, a dedicated platform for universitybased
Gilbert & Sullivan societies to showcase
their talents. Competitors here vie for the
Gertrude Marsh-Looi UNIFest Champions
Trophy and a £500 prize.
The competitions were the brainchild of Festival
founder, the late Ian Smith, an enthusiastic
amateur performer throughout his life. They
remain a vital part of the Festival, providing
invaluable opportunities for amateur singers.
Our adjudicators face a challenging task in
assessing the performances, and as Ian used to
say:
“I always agreed with the adjudicator when I
got a good report, but it was a very different
matter when I didn’t!”
To agree or not to agree? Come along to
the Awards Ceremony or tune in to our live
