Created during a pivotal transitional period—from the
final year of Lee Ka-sing’s time in Hong Kong before
his departure in 1997 to his early years in Toronto—the
Cultural Perspectives Series (1996–2001). Spanning
over twenty titles, the series was curated by the late
Leung Ping-kwan. Ka-sing’s vision was to develop a
cohesive and highly recognizable visual identity across
the collection—one that could be identified even from a
distance.
Each cover employs a monochromatic palette and a
dense, collage-like arrangement of line art, a hallmark
of Ka-sing’s visual language. These works not only
served as book covers but also formed a unified visual
essay on cultural narrative and design. The series is
included in Op.7, The Floating Gallery (1985–1996),
a larger body of work that explores the fluid space
between assignment and personal expression. Many of
these photographs originated as editorial or commercial
commissions, later reframed as autonomous art.

Appendix

A Dialogue as the Postscript — This piece by Lee Ka-sing was
composed in 2022 for the end page and back cover of DOUBLE
DOUBLE, a special issue on Bibliotheca. Presented as a triptych,
it features: the book cover he designed in 1986 for 狂 城 亂 馬 (Mad
City, Wild Horse); a 4x5 Polaroid negative taken in 2003, showing
the book juxtaposed with a fruit; and an inverse image transformed
in 2022 from the scan of that negative.
