Emails show murderer was ticking time bomb
Cameron’s
chilling
warning
to cousin
Fifty years before he murdered Mt Pleasant
pensioner Faye Phelps, Elliot Cameron also killed
his brother. Now emails reveal for more than a
decade, he had been warning what could happen
without proper mental health support.
Sam Sherwood reports
SITTING AT his computer, Elliot
Cameron feared he might kill
again.
It was 2010, more than three
decades after he had been found
not guilty by reason of insanity for
killing his brother while he slept.
Now in his 60s, having spent
most of his life as a mental health
in-patient, he emailed his cousin
Alan about why he needed to
remain in hospital.
“The probability of me repeating
the offence outside hospital is
greater than the probability of me
repeating the offence where I am
and so disrupting society is less
when I remain in hospital,” he
wrote. “I am correctly placed in a
mental hospital. I should remain
where I am.”
He repeated his worries to Alan
in 2016, and again in 2022.
And then, last year, Elliot’s
fears became reality.
During a regular visit to Faye
Phelps’ home, where he did some
gardening work, he murdered the
83-year-old with an axe.
Faye – and others who had
employed the now 76-year-old as
their gardener – had no idea he
had killed before, or that he was a
mental health patient.
On Monday, a suppression
order was lifted, the full story of
Elliot’s life to be published – and
how both his and Faye’s families
believe the mental health system
let everyone down.
Elliot Cameron was born in
Christchurch in August 1948.
For most of his childhood, he
had a “normal school life”, his
father Ronald Cameron said, in
a statement taken after the first
murder in 1975.
But one day, during his fifth
form year, Elliot came into his
father’s bedroom “very white”.
He told his father he’d been
playing a game of rugby when
something “exploded in his
head”. • Turn to page 4
Youngson had made a commitment
within the parameters of safety
and care.
She had a quiet hope “that
people see me exercising and feel
Fitness centres have had
the largest increase of the city
council’s recreational facilities, at
almost 37% with 382,926 visits.
Swimming visits have increased
7% to 1.72m, up from
1.6m last year. Regular memberships
30%.
Motorcyclist Ross Wheeler
slammed into a car 16 months
him.
He suffered a ripped shoulder
and busted leg.
The 71-year-old has been on
the road to recovery since, much
of it spent in the pool and gym.
“I use both to help strengthen
my shoulder, with light weights
and gentle swimming.
“I have about 60% of my full
movement back.”
Cathedral fence idea
More details have emerged
back the fence around the
Christ Church Cathedral. A
0.1ha area on the west side
of the cathedral could be
Cameron stated.
Elliot’s parents consulted a
neurosurgeon, who diagnosed
him with a brain tumour, and
Elliot had urgent surgery to
remove significant parts of his
brain.
After the operation, Elliot was
a completely different person.
He developed an intolerance for
noise and was a loner, finding it
impossible to make friends.
overheard Elliot confessing to an
officer, and telling him he had a
“long line of psychiatric illness”.
Once at the police station, a
detective asked Elliot what happened.
Elliot was silent for a long
pause, the detective recalled.
Then he said: “I wish I hadn’t
done it. I wish I hadn’t done it”.
In his own statement to police
Elliot gave a confused account
of what happened after he biked
over to the house that morning.
“I must have gone into my
room. It is behind the garage.
I think I went into the house.
It was by the back door. I must
have gone in through this door
as this is the only key I have. I
just don’t remember what happened
after that. I’m not sure.
I think I got into a police car. I
don’t know.”
Elliot was also interviewed by
a medical practitioner at Sunnyside
Hospital.
He apologised for what he’d
done, and said he’d been thinking
of shooting his brother for
years. He had also thought about
shooting his grandfather.
Elliot showed “no signs of
anxiety or any understanding”
of the impacts of his actions on
his parents or his own future, the
practitioner said. He was under
the impression that he would be
able to return home and continue
his university studies after
a few months in Sunnyside.
At his murder trial four
months later, three psychiatrists
gave evidence that Elliot was insane
at the time of the shooting
and lacked any appreciation that
his act was morally wrong.
It took the jury five minutes to
find him not guilty of murder on
the grounds of insanity.
Chief Justice Sir Richard Wild
granted a final order suppressing
Elliot’s name and ordered him to
be detained as a special patient
under the Criminal Justice Act.
Alan Cameron said hearing
that his cousin had killed his
brother was a “terrible shock”.
“There was a conviction, a
belief I think, amongst the family,
that he was out to maybe take
out the whole family.”
Over the decades, as family
members passed away, responsibility
for staying in touch with
Elliot passed from his parents, to
Alan’s father, and finally to Alan
himself.
For some, keeping in touch
with a killer might feel like an
unwanted burden. But Alan said
he saw something more in his
cousin.
“We knew the history. Knew
that through no fault of his own
he had this tumour, this operation
– and again through no fault
of his own it deeply affected his
personality.
“He was part of the family. He
had a talent, he had gifts, and he
deserved to have some support.
There might have been an initial
fear, but I didn’t think twice
once I had some interaction with
him.”
Alan and Elliot regularly
kept in touch via email, and in
September 2010 Alan received
an email from his cousin that
concerned him.
Elliot started by thanking him
for understanding his desire to
stay in hospital but said he was
“perplexed” by Alan’s comments
about him “recovering”.
there was “a great deal wrong”
If he had been handled in “a
greater than the probability of me
repeating the offence where I am
and so disrupting society is less
when I remain in hospital.”
“I am correctly placed in a
mental hospital,” he said. “I
should remain where I am.”
In the years that followed, Elliot’s
concerns seemed to settle
down, and Alan visited him a
handful of times – mostly off the
hospital grounds.
“They were always positive
MURDER: The scene of the fatal attack on Phelps.
interactions I had with Elliot, he
was intelligent, interested in what
was going on.”
But his anxieties around any
change in his circumstances
bubbled up again in 2016 when
his patient status was changed
to “informal” – meaning he was
free to leave Hillmorton.
Distressed, he emailed Alan.
“My mental state has not
changed and I would be vulnerable
in society and this would
lead me to repeat the offence,” he
wrote.
“The mood here is to discharge
anyone they can regardless of
circumstances,” he continued.
“I would not like to go to jail
but this may be my only option. I
would need to remain in hospital.
I would be grateful if you were
prepared to look at this.”
Another email from Elliot arrived
moments later.
Again, he referenced his surgery
as a teenager, the bullying
and forced drugging he said had
happened at Sunnyside, and his
fears about what would happen
if he was not in a protected or
controlled environment like
Hillmorton.
“I may not have a better
alternative than to re-offend.
My vulnerability will lead me to
recommit my original offence if
forced on.”
He urged Alan to see if the status
change could be investigated,
and reversed.
Alan said he tried his best to
support Elliot.
“He was institutionalised from
a teenager . . . He wanted to stay
close to the care facilities. The
difficulty was that they had assessed
him sufficiently well to go
out to the community.”
Elliot enjoyed heading out each
day to his gardening job, and
got on well with the people he
worked for, Alan said.
“But he always wanted to come
back to the institution so every
night he would come back and
stay under some kind of care. He
still had a fear . . . that he could
be a risk.”
In late 2022, Elliot pressed
Alan to intervene after learning
that repairs on the unit he lived
in might force him to move to
The Princess Margaret Hospital.
Elliot believed there were ways
he could stay at Hillmorton, and
asked Alan to write to director of
Area Mental Health Services Dr
Sigi Schmidt.
In January 2023, Alan sent
Elliot a draft of the letter he was
intending to send but Elliot was
unimpressed, replying that Alan
was “not getting the full picture”.
Alan acknowledged that he
couldn’t know all the details.
But he told his cousin: “Sending
them this correspondence
will at least make them aware
For the full story, go to
starnews.co.nz
there is someone else taking an
interest and prepared to not only
support but to ask questions.”
Elliot never emailed him again.
Alan continued to advocate for
his cousin, emailing Dr Schmidt
anyway and asking to be kept informed
about anything affecting
Elliot’s welfare.
Dr Schmidt replied that Elliot
had not agreed to his clinical
care being shared with Alan, but
concurred that would be helpful.
He had passed on Alan’s request
for disclosure to Elliot’s treating
psychiatrist, he said.
The last direct contact Alan
had from Hillmorton was in
September 2023, when he got a
phone call “out of the blue” inviting
him to a social event. Alan
couldn’t attend, but the carer
asked if he would like to talk to
Elliot.
“I said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to’, but
he wouldn’t come to the phone.”
The next call he got about
Elliot, 13 months later, was the
worst news imaginable: He had
killed again.
• Elliot was sentenced in the
High Court at Christchurch on
June 10 to life imprisonment,
with a minimum period of 10
years, for murdering Frances
Anne Phelps on October 4
last year.
From Huntsbury to Ukraine on a
• By Dylan Smits
MATT GOODRICK has had
enough of watching the Ukraine
war unfold on TV, so he is
heading over to do what he can
to help.
The 57-year-old has already
fundraised about $11,000
towards a vehicle to help medical
evacuations from frontline areas
of the more than three-year-long
conflict.
“I wanted to do something to
take an active role in helping to
save lives and bring a little bit of
that Christchurch support with
me,” he said.
The Huntsbury resident will
join up with the small United
Kingdom-based volunteer aid
group Ukraine Mission.
They will drive in a convoy
across Europe later next month
to get to the Polish –Ukraine
border to deliver vehicles and
supplies. They will then either
go into Ukraine to get the aid to
military medical teams or stop
at the border where their supply
will be received.
It will depend on conditions
in the war-torn country and how
at-risk the group would be to
missile attacks, which threaten
the whole of Ukraine.
Goodrick is aware of the
risks and will be following
the guidance of experienced
aid volunteers.
“I’m not trying to be a hero.
We’ll be weighing up the risks
and leaning towards caution. I
really trust the knowledge of the
Ukraine Mission people. They
are really experienced with this
stuff,” he said.
Ukraine Mission has delivered
about 300 vehicles to Ukraine
since the full-scale Russian
invasion in February 2022.
Vehicles play a key role in
speedily evacuating injured
soldiers and civilians from
frontline areas so they can
receive medical attention.
If Goodrick goes into Ukraine,
the volunteer team will transport
the vehicles and supplies to
Ukrainian military medical
teams in frontline regions, but
not to the immediate frontline of
the fighting.
“I’m just going to do what I’m
aiming to do, hopefully deliver
the vehicles and get out pretty
quickly,” he said.
The eastern and southern
regions of the country are
the main battle zones as the
Ukrainian military continues to
resist a slow but steady advance
of Russian troops.
his $15,000 goal which will allow
difficult conditions along with
some food and basic medical
supplies.
A second-hand 4WD is the
most likely option, balancing
cost with effectiveness.
Any excess funds will be
spent on additional supplies,
which will be delivered with
the vehicle.
Goodrick, who is selfemployed,
has felt a groundswell
of support for his effort, with
family, friends and even fellow
members of the Sydenham
Cricket Club contributing to the
aid fund.
His wife and adult children are
encouraging of his plan.
“They know it’s something
that’s important to me.”
Goodrick and his wife have
discussed the importance of him
exercising caution and getting
home safely.
He reflected on the death of
Christchurch aid worker Andrew
Bagshaw, who was killed while
evacuating civilians in the Soledar
region in January 2023.
Bagshaw died from gunshot
wounds in an alleged execution
and war crime by Russian forces.
“He was a very impressive man
and a hero. It’s totally tragic what
happened to him and others
who are just trying to help,” said
Goodrick.
More than 50 aid workers have
died in Ukraine since the war
started.
Goodrick says it is up to “ordinary
people” to give aid where
they can as governments around
the world appear incapable of
stopping the lengthy conflict.
“I’m no soldier but watching
over time so many failed attempts
at peace, I personally wanted to
do more than just donate money.”
The war’s death toll is unclear
due to limited reporting from
Russia and Ukraine, but it is in
the hundreds of thousands.
Although negotiations toward
ending the war took place in Istanbul
early this month, there has
been no major progress toward a
peace agreement.
Goodrick’s interest in helping
aid efforts was partly inspired
by his friendships with some
Ukrainians and Russians in
FEARS: A seismic report has confirmed part of the city
council’s civic offices building is at risk of failing in the event
of a major earthquake.
PHOTO: CCC
Quake concerns keep
council annex closed
A SECTION of the city council’s
civic offices building on Hereford
St will remain unoccupied after
a seismic report confirmed
concerns about earthquake
vulnerability.
About a third of the 1500
staff will continue working from
other council sites or from home.
Strengthening design work is
under way and is expected to take
six months.
An engineering assessment
found the main council building
meets 100% of the New Building
Standard (NBS), but found issues
with the adjoining six-storey
annex.
While the annex itself is rated
above 34% NBS – meaning it is
not officially earthquake-prone
– some floor connections on the
Worcester Blvd side are at 40%
and could fail during a major
quake.
Council staff evacuated the
annex on May 20 following a
preliminary review. The council
chambers have also been vacated,
with most meetings now being
held at Fendalton Library.
“The likelihood of a large
earthquake is considered low,
however, based on the potential
consequences and the temporary
mitigation measures available, we
have determined that the council
should continue to vacate the
annex area,” said city council chief
executive Mary Richardson.
Supermarkets to get voting bins in bid
to raise local body elections turnout
• By Dylan Smits
ADDITIONAL in-person
voting bins will be available at
supermarkets for the October
local body elections in an effort
to boost turnout and improve
accessibility.
More than 70 bins will be
in public locations, such as
supermarkets and libraries,
after the drop-off points were
considered a success during the
2022 election.
Turnout for local body
elections is relatively low with
43.3% voting in the Christchurch
2022 election, compared to
78.2% nationally for the 2023
general election.
Voting bins were only available
at 23 city council facilities last
election, notably all libraries and
most services centres.
“Building on past success, we
will expand the use of highly
visible orange vote bins,” said a
city council spokesperson.
“Locations are currently being
confirmed. Details of these
will be promoted, provided
to electors with the voting
documents and available on the
city council website.”
Mayor Phil Mauger supports
the voting bins
being in a range
of locations.
“Anything that
can help make
voting easier
in a way that
works for people
and helps lift
participation is a
positive thing,”
he said.
Phil
Mauger
Voter turnout by city
council ward in 2022:
Banks Peninsula – 60.3%
Cashmere – 53.4%
Fendalton – 49.2%
Halswell – 48.4%
Harewood – 47.3%
Heathcote – 47.1%
Coastal – 46.3%
Waimairi – 44.6%
Burwood – 44.4%
Papanui – 44.2%
Innes – 38.4%
Spreydon – 38.2%
Hornby – 36.9%
Linwood – 34.4%
Central – 31.1%
Riccarton – 29.6%
It comes as support increases
for in-person voting, instead of
postal, for local body elections
nationwide.
A report by Local Government
New Zealand in March
advocated for a transition to
in-person voting in time for the
2028 election.
Postal voting was labelled as
“outdated” and inaccessible for
younger voters not used to the
postal system.
It would require a law change
by Parliament as the Local
Government Act determines
the local body elections voting
system.
Mauger said he is open to inperson
voting and other options
for Christchurch.
“Provided it can be done
securely and fairly, I’m open to a
mix of approaches that suits the
needs of people – whether that’s
in-person voting, postal voting,
or online options for the future.”
Wellington had a similar
turnout to Christchurch in 2022
with 43.2% while Auckland and
Hamilton were significantly
lower at 35.5% and 29.4%
respectively.
Dunedin had a higher turnout
with 48.2%.
Multi-unit builds continue to gain ground
• By Tim Cronshaw
CHRISTCHURCH’S horizon is
being filled by more residential
multi-units, mainly within the
central city and surrounding
margins.
From January to May, the city
council’s building consent team
issued 192 code compliance
certificates (CCCs) for new
multi-unit dwellings – a 56%
increase on the five-year average
of 123 for the same period. The
certificate confirms a build meets
all consented requirements and
is complete.
The central city remains the
hotspot, with 36 CCCs issued in
the past five months. Spreydon
Ward (including Addington,
Middleton, Hillmorton and
Hoon Hay) followed with 26,
and Innes Ward (Edgeware, St
Albans, Shirley, Mairehau) had
24.
Last year saw a five-year high
of 409 multi-unit CCCs, and
2025 is on track to surpass
that figure if current demand
continues.
Detached housing also
remains steady. From January to
May, 540 CCCs were issued for
standalone homes – down 9%
from 596 last year, but consistent
with the five-year average.
Mike Greer Homes
Canterbury has completed nearly
740 sign-offs for stand-alone
BOOMING: The construction of multi-unit developments like One Central in the central city is likely to reach new highs if
current demand continues.
homes since 2020, followed by
324 by NDM Construction and
257 by Signature Homes.
Much of the new building
activity is centred in Halswell and
Harewood wards.
Leading the way for multiunits
is 141 sign-offs by Design
Workshop and 103 by Figure and
Ground.
City council building consents
head Steffan Thomas said 158
CCCs were completed in May,
covering 379 dwellings – up from
127 CCCs for 307 homes in April.
A total of 732 CCCs were
issued from Jan 25 to May 25 for
1525 dwellings, compared with
751 CCCs for 1481 dwellings
during the same period last year.
Nationally, building work
is increasing. In the first three
months of the year, 31,845
building consent applications,
amendments and CCCs were
processed – about 1000 more
than the same period last year.
Building and Construction
Minister Chris Penk has advised
processing delays for building
consents and code compliance
certificates have dropped.
The latest data shows 92.7%
of building consent applications
and 96.8% of CCCs were
processed within the statutory
timeframe in the first quarter of
2025 – up from 88% and 93.6%
last year.
The Government is currently
working on reforms to
streamline the consent system.
This includes giving ‘‘trusted’’
building professionals the right
to sign off their own work and
making consent agencies carry
out 80% of building inspections
within three working days.
Mother avoids jail for relationship
with friend’s 15-year-old son
• By Al Williams
A MOTHER of three “fell in
love” with a friend’s 15-year-old
son and formed a “relationship”
with him before authorities
discovered her “distorted
thinking”.
The teen wasn’t getting on well
with his family and had been
reported missing more than 20
times. She was very anxious to
find love in a real relationship,
and he provided it.
Judge Jane
Farish said that
the pair fell in
love and the
relationship
continued for
several months
as she sentenced
the woman for
sexual connection
with a
young person.
Jane
Farish
“Unfortunately, you were very
anxious to find love in a real
relationship. He provided it, you
fell in love, he fell in love with
you.”
The court heard the pair discussed
having children of their
own.
The woman was friends with
the boy’s mother who was aware
of the relationship.
However, his mother was concerned
about his mental health
and worried he might try to take
his life if she tried to intervene or
stop the relationship.
The Christchurch District
Court heard it played on the
offender’s mind as well, as her
mother had committed suicide,
and she had also tried to take her
own life.
In early 2023, police were
alerted by Oranga Tamariki to
the relationship, and the woman
then admitted it to police.
At sentencing on Monday last
week, Judge Farish said an earlier
sentencing indication had been
given with a starting point of five
years’ jail.
Judge Farish said she would
not be sending the woman to jail.
“There is a lot of personal information
which is relative as to
why I am not sending her to jail.”
Judge Farish said there was
an issue with child sex offender
registration.
“I have to be satisfied that she
poses a risk to those under 16
but there is not information that
supports that.”
Defence lawyer Kathy Basire
said the victim was months away
from consent when the offending
happened.
“She was not attracted to this
person because of their age.”
There was no grooming, there
was “distorted thinking” when
she fell in love with him, almost
a mutual dependence on one another,
which fed their distorted
thinking, Basire said.
There was an idea they could
have a family and that everyone
would accept it.
However, she was meant to be
more culpable because she was
an adult.
Basire said the victim was
never interviewed and the
prosecution relied on her client’s
admissions. The relationship had
occurred over a period of seven
months in 2022.
It was not a situation where the
woman was sexually attracted
to boys, it was a co-dependent
relationship, Basire said.
Judge Farish said there were
specific issues in sentencing the
woman.
There was suppression and
another charge that had yet to be
determined.
There was a risk of identifying
the complainant, while the judge
was also concerned about the
impact on the woman’s children.
Judge Farish said she had read
that one of the woman’s children
was quite vulnerable.
The woman had suffered a
traumatic and difficult childhood,
the judge said. She had
INAPPROPRIATE: A mother has been sentenced to nine months’ home detention for a
relationship with a friend’s 15-year-old son.
PHOTO: GETTY
suffered a lot of abuse and other
people had taken advantage of
her.
Her relationship with the
father of her children had been
toxic and caused her harm, and
she had struggled to step away
from it.
Judge Farish, in reading the reports,
said there was a reality in
the woman’s loneliness, she was
parenting on her own, and the
charges had caused her and her
children a great deal of anxiety.
“It is inappropriate to have
relationships with those under 16
but this was consensual.
“The difficulty is that you
were a victim then became an
offender. Your personal mental
health struggles are significant,
they are relevant, you would not
have got into the relationship,
but for your own difficulties.”
Judge Farish took a starting
point of four years’ jail, giving
the woman a 20% discount
for a guilty plea. Another 15%
was applied for Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder and associated
disorders.
It had been noted she would be
vulnerable if jailed, so another
5% was applied.
Another 10% was given in
recognising the woman’s relationship
to her children.
A sentence of home detention
would benefit her children and
the community at large in the
long run, the judge said.
Judge Farish sentenced the
woman to nine months’ home
detention and referred her to a
sex offender programme.
She was ordered not to possess
or consume alcohol and to
undertake any counselling as
directed.
Judge Farish said she would
not impose an order that the
woman not have contact with
persons under 16 as it would create
difficulties.
“You are not at risk of having
more sex.”
She would have been automatically
enrolled on the Child Sex
Offender Register if given a custodial
sentence, but given all the
available material, there was no
indication that she posed a risk,
the judge said.
Judge Farish then turned to the
issue of suppression. The judge
said she was worried about the
woman’s children. If there was
any publication of the woman’s
name it would identify the victim,
and he had wanted to move
on with his life, the judge said.
“He didn’t want to be part of
this prosecution.”
A final order was made for
name suppression.
A CHAINSAW drone developed
to cut wrist-size branches
in hazardous areas may be
commercialised soon.
The Canterbury University
team, led by computer science
Professor Richard Green and
mechanical engineering Professor
Dan Zhao, has spent eight
years designing unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAV) as precision tools
for challenging environments.
A display of the prototype
chainsaw drone at work
impressed industry representatives
last week.
Green said the new drone was
a more cost-effective, efficient
and safer option for trimming
trees around power lines and
pylons without the need of ladders
and scaffolding or putting
workers at harm.
The innovation could be a
useful addition for arboriculture,
electricity infrastructure and civil
construction industries, he said.
Green said a drone carrying a
pruning tool developed last year
was limited to cutting 30mm
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
branches, while the chainsaw
drone could get through about
60mm of dead wood.
‘‘It’s working so well now that
we have got funding for commercialisation
so I expect it to be
commercialised next year.’’
Advances in electric chainsaw
technology with small electric
motors and improving battery
technology had assisted the
drone development, he said.
Other applications could
include inaccessible and hard-toreach
sites and within built up
urban areas.
Forestry company cleared to appeal
exclusion from Port Hills fire claims
A FORESTRY firm previously
removed from the companies
register has been cleared to
appeal its exclusion from an
insurance settlement for the Port
Hills fires.
IAG filed for damages
in the High Court against
lines company Orion and
Christchurch Adventure Park,
on behalf of a dozen property
owners.
One of the owners – Scott
Forestry – was dismissed as
a claimant, because it wasn’t
a registered company when
proceedings were filed.
The fires that broke out in
February 2017 scorched more
than 2000ha, destroying
nine homes and significantly
damaging a further two
properties.
Court documents showed
the company ceased trading
in November 2020 and was
removed from the companies
register in November 2022 after
failing to file annual returns.
During a teleconference in
the High Court proceedings in
December 2023, Orion made an
oral application to “strike out”
Scott Forestry as a party to the
proceedings.
A week later, the judge granted
the application, arguing that the
company “technically has never
been a party to the proceeding”.
“Because it was not on the
register when this proceeding
was filed, but there having (been)
a failure to take reasonable steps
to restore the company to the
register, it is now . . . formally
struck out.”
The company was reinstated in
April 2024.
In its submission, Scott
Forestry argued it “was always
party to the proceedings for the
purposes of bringing a claim”.
After an April hearing, Justice
Palmer has ruled the company
can appeal its exclusion from
the suit.
1964 – THE BEATLES TOUR
It was the event said to
have swept in the sixties in
New Zealand, the moment
young Kiwis plugged into an
international youth culture.
The Beatles – John, Paul,
George and Ringo – touched
down in the capital on June 21,
1964, before spending a manic
eight days in the country.
It included two shows in
Christchurch on June 27.
The Fab Four arrived at
Christchurch Airport to
raucous fanfare that never
really died down. A 13-yearold
girl flung herself at the
bonnet of the group’s limo
and bounced onto the road.
Jealous boys pelted the Beatles
with rotten eggs when they
braved the balcony of their
accommodation, the Clarendon
Hotel, while fans climbed the
downpipes on the gasworks
opposite to catch a glimpse of
their idols.
The two shows at the Majestic
Theatre lasted between 22min
and 26min, with the same
11-song set performed: I Saw
Her Standing There, I Want to
Hold Your Hand, You Can’t Do
That, Till There Was You, All
My Loving, She Loves You, Roll
Over Beethoven, Can’t Buy Me
Love, This Boy, Long Tall Sally
and Twist and Shout. Ringo
Starr also sang Boys.
The Christchurch Star
review of the show said it
sounded like “three pure jets
screaming through the Majestic
Theatre accompanied by
10,000 angry starlings”.
The Press review likened the
assault on the eardrums to
hitting a tambourine with a
sledge-hammer.
“The shrieking electric
guitars, amplified through
some fiendish electronic
system, led the assault.
Ringo’s drums filled in any
gaps between blasts, and
the apparently half-crazed
audience did its best to scream
and whistle above it all.”
The hysteria had followed
the Beatles south. In Auckland,
the education department
threatened to prosecute the
parents of the dozens of
children who wagged school
to see the Beatles downtown,
where the band was mauled
by fans with minimal police
presence. In Wellington, a
20-year-old woman slashed her
wrists after a member of the
Beatles’ entourage refused to
introduce her to the band.
In Christchurch, 2000 people
watched The Beatles leave their
hotel for the airport; another
2000 crowded behind wire
fences out at the airport. The
band stood on the steps of their
plane, bound for Australia, and
waved to sobbing fans.
One aged about 16 kept
calling out: “John, please don’t
go.” She was so distressed
that two members of St John
gave her a sedative, The Press
reported.
Then just like that, the band
was gone.
Right-turning
arrows ‘safer’,
lessen drivers
‘taking risks’
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
Readers react to last
week’s article on a new
report highlighting
issues with installing
more right-turning
arrows
I’m currently in my 10th year
teaching people how to drive.
Young 16-plus learner drivers
want to obey the road rules;
however, they are questioning
why the green arrows are not
activated.
Drivers in Christchurch are
currently breaking the law as
they pull out onto the green
light (without the arrow) and
invariably end up going through
red lights. Only one vehicle is
allowed in the intersection, and
the second vehicle must wait behind
the first white line until the
vehicle in the intersection moves
out and then that vehicle can
move out, traffic just builds up
and becomes congested and this
frustrates drivers, that is why so
many drivers run the red lights
in Christchurch.
The council is causing drivers
to break the law due to the lack of
green light arrows. Our council
should spend time in Auckland
to see how effective green arrows
move the traffic and help avoid
the red-light runners.
The cost is not the issue, tax
the larger juggernaut vehicles
that use the city streets. It’s more
about getting the traffic moving
and creating safer intersections.
I believe traffic accidents at
intersections would reduce and
traffic would move faster and
safer, therefore the council needs
to prioritise installing more rightturning
arrows at intersections.
-Jeff Macey
I’ve been frustrated countless
times driving around the
city with the lack of right turn
arrows. One example is trying
to turn right onto Garlands Rd
from Ferry Rd. This can take
four or five sets of green lights,
even if you’re only a few cars
back, as only one or two cars can
get through at a time. I think
intersections like this are dangerous
because of the unnecessary
frustration they create, which
can easily lead onto risk taking/
dangerous driving.
I understand not all upgrades
can happen immediately but
surely ones like this are on the
list to be fixed.
-Tim Corry
Before adding more right turning
green arrows I would suggest
a review on the efficiency of the
ones we have already in place.
Many of the current green arrows
are only on long enough for two
or three cars to turn right, which
leads to cars backing up and disrupting
the lane going straight.
It is very frustrating when you
are in the turning lane for two or
three light cycles before getting
through.
Maybe a trial on extending
the right turning arrows would
be worth doing before looking
at more arrows. It might also be
worth removing the red arrow
so turns can be made when there
are gaps in the oncoming traffic.
There have been many occasions
where there is no oncoming
traffic but you have to sit there
because of the red arrow.
-John Turner
I have never felt inconvenienced
when going straight
ahead at lights by waiting for
traffic turning on a green arrow
but every time I drive around
Christchurch the lack of rightturning
arrows definitely makes
driving stressful.
Often the only way you can
ever get to turn right is to sit in
the middle of the intersection
and wait until cars coming
straight through eventually stop,
by which time the lights are usually
red. Installing more rightturning
arrows must be given
top priority by the council for
their traffic safety upgrade programme.
A related issue is that, even
when right-turning arrows are
installed, they are not always
activated or else they are on very
short phasing. This often causes
the traffic that builds up in the
right-turning lane to block the
right-hand straight-through
lane and cause frustration
and risky lane changing. The
council’s policy on this issue
should urgently be reviewed and
updated.
-Pamela Pye, Avonhead
I first complained to the council
nine years ago when driving my
baby grand-daughter around the
city when I was visiting from the
UK. They said they would pass
my email on to the transport department.
I heard nothing more.
Since moving to Christchurch
permanently I have seen
the impatient and dangerous
manoeuvres every day to turn
right. Brougham St/Opawa Rd
and all the roads turning right off
Brougham St, for example. And
why do those lights with right
arrows only allow two-three cars
through per sequence?
I use the bus a lot too, and it is
so annoying for them and any
longer length vehicle to turn
right.
-Shelley McGonigle
I arrived back in Christchurch
in 2020, after living in California
for 25 years. One of the first
things that hit me was the lack
of green arrows for turning at
stop lights, especially on busy
arterial roads, like Brougham St,
Moorhouse Ave, Fitzgerald Ave,
and Blenheim Rd.
Yes, drivers do get delayed by
having to wait for turning lights
to change, but they save lives.
No mad dash across two
lanes of traffic, or trying to see
if the oncoming traffic has a
big enough gap for you to get
through. Instead, you can clearly
go when the arrow turns green.
Much safer.
-Terri Hygate
I live in north Spreydon where
I should turn right off Brougham
St into Strickland St but there is
no green arrow to cross right so
I have to drive around the block
by turning right at Selwyn St so I
can get to my home at most times
except late evening, which is
about four times the distance.
I have seen people take huge
risks to cross there.
Regional council resolute in face of change
Canterbury
Regional Council
Deputy Chair Dr Deon Swiggs
WE STAND at a critical juncture
for local government in New
Zealand.
Significant resource
management, water, housing and
infrastructure reform is coming
our way, and with the change
in national direction, it has
never been clearer that we need
comprehensive local government
reform, now.
We know this is a politically
challenging path for central
government, one they are
currently reluctant to tread. In this
absence, we cannot afford to wait.
We must act.
My hope is the work we are
doing at Canterbury Regional
Council (Environment
Canterbury) will allow us to shift
from a reactive stance, to one of
proactive influence.
We will not simply respond to
central government proposals,
we will shape them, ensuring
Canterbury’s voice is heard at the
highest levels.
A proactive approach is crucial,
and I am proud of the work we
have done as a council to develop
positions that support proactive
strategic work and advocacy
opportunities.
In uncertain times, clarity is
paramount, and we have done
the work as a council to develop
some shared positions on a range
of issues including managing
environmental effects; managing
natural resource use; economic
prosperity; structure of local,
regional and central government;
and Treaty partnership.
These positions provide a
coherent basis for our message
to central government, mana
whenua, stakeholders, and our
communities.
Canterbury is unique and
we need a locally informed
approach. We have about 70%
of New Zealand’s groundwater,
as well as braided rivers, diverse
ecosystems, and productive
farmlands.
Our council champions the
region and provides a regional
lens to central government,
ensuring national standards are
complemented by our specific
needs and knowledge.
We understand our region
and the importance of fostering
ecological coherence, integrated
catchment-based thinking and
a ki uta ki tai (mountains to the
sea) approach.
We are committed to ensuring
our significant freshwater
resources and highly productive
farmlands are managed with the
nuance they require.
Our region is a powerhouse for
national economic prosperity. At
Canterbury Regional Council we
are committed to fostering that
prosperity, valuing what we have
– including our food producing
ability –while embracing
innovation and ensuring our
infrastructure is resilient against
the impacts of climate change.
We recognise our region’s
contribution to the country’s longterm
economic prosperity and
the need for active environmental
management alongside openness
to innovation.
Importantly, we are united as a
council and want to reaffirm our
deep and maturing partnership
with Ngāi Tahu based on mutual
respect, shared understanding and
shared values. This is not just a
statutory obligation – it is a shared
vision, and a relationship that
underpins all our work.
We want to tackle the elephant
in the room: the unsustainable
structure and funding of local
government.
Even if central government is
hesitant, we must continue to
advocate for the regulatory clarity,
better alignment, and diversified
funding tools our communities
desperately need.
The current structure and funding
of local government service
delivery is unsustainable and we
are calling for New Zealand’s systems
of government to adjust and
respond accordingly.
The reforms are happening now
and the implications that come
with them are significant, not
just for our role and function as a
regional government, but for our
region.
We will not stand idle and have
change done to us. We are taking
every opportunity to champion
and advocate for Waitaha
Canterbury.
A couple of
things are
changing about
ammunition and
the Firearms
Registry
From 24 June, 2025, some
changes are happening relating
to ammunition and the Firearms
Registry. These will help us
ensure ammunition is only being
sold to current firearms licence
holders, and support the smooth
uptake of the Registry over the
coming years. Here’s what you
need to know.
1. When buying ammunition, the sale will be recorded by the
firearms dealer or ammunition seller
On and from 24 June 2025, the firearms dealer or ammunition seller selling
you ammunition, must record the ammunition sale in the Firearms Registry
using the online Dealer Transactions form. This is a record of the sale, not a
registration of ammunition.
As the licence holder, you do not need to record the ammunition you
purchase. The Arms Regulations say the firearms dealer or ammunition
seller needs to record the sale. This is at the time the ammunition is
dispatched or handed over, or immediately after. As a licence holder, you
should expect that when you purchase ammunition you’ll need to assist the
dealer or ammunition seller with information required for the online Dealer
Transactions form, for example, your firearms licence number.
2. The first time you buy ammunition, you’ll need to register
all your firearms – if you have not done so already
After 24 June 2025, licence holders will have an activating circumstance
when they purchase ammunition from a firearms dealer or ammunition
seller - if they haven’t already had one. This means you will need to register
all the firearms and arms items in your possession within 30 days of
purchasing ammunition, if you haven’t already registered your firearms.
Once you have entered your details into the Firearms Registry, you must
keep your information up to date when buying or selling arms items.
Grape hyacinths, or Muscari, are tough bulbs that multiply rapidly in cool,
reasonably well-drained soil.
Winter a time for
hardier crops
Expert advice on what tasks
need tackling in your garden
this week
Vegetables
Jerusalem artichokes, shallots and
garlic are among the few crops that can be
planted in the open ground at this time of
year.
Provided the soil is not frozen or waterlogged,
these hardy plants do best when
planted now, coming away quickly in early
spring.
Rhubarb plants (crowns) that have been
in the same site for several years can be
broken up with a sharp spade.
Replant pieces in heavily manured,
deeply-dug soil.
Keep autumn-sown onion seedlings free
from weeds by lightly hoeing around the
rows.
The old practice was to apply soot to
stimulate the young plants into growth
when warmer weather returned.
The theory was that the blackened soil
surface absorbed more sunlight warmth
than lighter surfaces, encouraging early
growth.
Asparagus plants should be cut close to
the ground.
Another old practice was to leave the tops
on the bed until they were thoroughly dry.
They were then burned there, allowing the
ashes to lie on the soil.
The idea was that, as well as adding
nutrients to the soil, burning destroyed any
ripened seed, preventing random, inferior
asparagus plants appearing.
Unfortunately, fire bylaws in most areas
mean this is no longer possible, so the cut
stems should be removed and any berries
picked off the soil and thrown away.
Flowers
Grape hyacinths (Muscari) and the bravest
snowdrops may be showing a few blooms.
Also known as match heads Muscari are
tough bulbs that multiply rapidly in cool,
reasonably well-drained soil.
As well as producing dozens of tiny
bulblets around each parent, some also selfseed
if the seed heads are left to mature.
As well as the common mid-blue single,
there are doubles (Blue Spike and feathered
M. comosum Plumosum), white (M. botryoides
Alba), ice-blue (Iceberg, Barbara) and
M. latifolium, a species from Turkey that has
flowers of dark violet on the lower two-thirds
of the stem, while the upper part is blue.
Snowdrops (Galanthus) are also reliable,
hardy early-flowering bulbs, perfect for
southern regions, as they need cool conditions
to flower well.
Closely related to snowdrops are snowflakes
(Leucojum aestivum), enjoying a
comeback in some parts of New Zealand as
they are easier to grow in warmer climates
than Galanthus.
Grow gooseberries
in a
sunny part of
the garden
where the
soil does not
dry out.
Fruit
Since the arrival of the American
gooseberry mildew in 1984, the number of
gooseberry varieties has shrunk and only
two named varieties, Invicta and Pax, have
so far proved resistant to the mildew curse.
Grow gooseberries in an open, sunny
part of the garden where the soil does not
dry out.
Gooseberries fruit on old wood and
on last season’s growth. Prune to keep
the bushes open to let air circulate and
to make picking fruit easier. Cut out any
suckers below ground level.
Encourage sturdy, vigorous growth by
mulching with an organic manure and a
top-dressing of potash at the rate of 50g a
bush.
Small trees that are decorative as well as
useful include the mulberry, medlar and
olive.
The medlar (Mespilus germanica) is a
hardy deciduous tree native to southeast
Europe.
It will grow to about 8m, has white flowers
in spring and brown fruit.
The fruit must be “bletted” (allowed to
half-rot) before eating.
The black mulberry (Morus nigra) comes
from western Asia.
It will grow to 10-12m and has been cultivated
for centuries for its edible fruit, which
looks a little like a blackberry.
The leaves were sometimes used for feeding
silkworms, although white mulberry (M.
alba) was preferred.
Do not grow mulberries near a path, as
fallen fruit will stain it.

Lemon heaven
Penelope Maguire
celebrates the
bright flavours citrus
brings us in our darker
seasons
I THINK I write about citrus
around this time every year – but
how could I not?
With the darkening afternoons
and the pull to lean into heartier,
more comforting meals, citrus
arrives like nature’s sweet little
reminder that some brightness still
exists, even on the greyest winter
days.
Lavender and lemon
posset
A delicate, vintage-style dessert
that feels light and elegant, served
in its own pretty lemon shell. It’s
quick to make, beautiful on the
table, and a perfect creamy, sweet
and acidic finish to a winter meal.
Ingredients
2 cups cream
¾ cup sugar
Zest of 1 lemon
4 large lemons (you’ll need ½ cup
juice, and the shells for serving)
½ tsp dried culinary lavender (or 1
tsp fresh)
Method
• Slice lemons in half lengthways
and juice them (you’ll need ½ cup
of juice). Carefully scoop out the
pulp using a small serrated knife
and spoon. Trim the bases so they
sit flat. Chill in the fridge while
you make the posset.
• In a small pot, combine cream,
sugar, lemon zest, and lavender.
Bring to a gentle simmer and let
it bubble softly for 5 minutes to
thicken.
• Remove from heat and stir
in the lemon juice until fully
combined. Strain out the zest and
lavender.
• Pour the warm posset into the
lemon halves using a small jug or
spoon. Chill for at least 4 hours or
overnight.
• Serve cold, topped with a tiny
pinch of dried lavender or edible
petals.
Lemon, lemon verbena
and boysenberry cake
This cake is a showstopper
for midwinter celebrations and
it makes the most of lemons in
every part: cake, syrup, icing and
curd.
Ingredients
Serves up to 12
200g butter, softened
225g caster sugar
4 large eggs
Zest of 1 lemon
2 Tbsp finely chopped lemon
verbena (optional)
2 tsp vanilla extract
120g gluten-free flour
1½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
160g ground almonds
Lemon syrup
Zest and juice of 2 lemons
75g sugar
1 sprig lemon verbena or lemon
balm (optional)
Method
• Preheat oven to 170°C.
Butter and line a 20-23cm round
springform tin.
• In a large bowl or stand mixer,
beat the sugar, lemon zest and
lemon verbena to release their
oils.
• Add the soft butter and vanilla
and beat until pale and fluffy.
• Beat in the eggs one at a
time, scraping the bowl between
additions.
• Gently fold in the flour,
baking powder, salt and ground
almonds until just combined.
• Pour into the prepared tin and
bake for 30-40 minutes, or until a
skewer comes out clean.
• While the cake bakes, gently
heat the syrup ingredients until
the sugar dissolves.
• While the cake is still warm,
prick all over and spoon over the
syrup. Let cool completely before
icing.
To finish: Frost the cooled
cake with the cream cheese icing.
Spoon lemon curd over the top
and scatter with edible flowers,
herbs or dried lemon pieces.
Cream cheese and
boysenberry icing
Ingredients
125g (½ a tub) cream cheese,
softened
125g butter, softened
2½ cups icing sugar, sifted
½ cup boysenberries, drained
Pinch salt
PHOTOS: PENELOPE MAGUIRE
Method
• Beat the cream cheese and
butter until smooth. Add icing
sugar and beat until fluffy.
• Fold in the boysenberries –
swirl for a marbled effect, or mix
in fully for a vibrant pink icing.
Lemon and lemon
verbena curd
Ingredients
3 egg yolks
½ cup sugar
Zest and juice of 2 lemons
2 tsp lemon verbena, finely
chopped (optional)
75g cold butter, cubed
Method
• Whisk yolks, sugar, zest,
juice and verbena in a small pot.
• Cook over low heat, stirring
constantly, until thickened.
• Reduce the heat and stir in
butter till it melts into the curd.
• Strain for a smoother finish.
• Chill before using.
RUGBY LEAGUE convert Joel
Lam has made a surprise pivot
back to union after being named
in the Manu Samoa squad to play
Scotland next month.
The 23-year-old, who previously
made eight appearances for Canterbury
and one for the Crusaders,
switched codes earlier this year to
chase a rugby league career.
He featured twice for the
Hornby Panthers in the CRL
Australia in April to join Brisbane
club Souths Logan Magpies.
However, last week Lam was
ST THOMAS of Canterbury
College rugby league wonderkid
Bishop Neal will train full-time
with the Warriors for the first
time next year.
The 17-year-old has extended
his contract with the franchise
until 2028, alongside fellow
Cantabrians Makaia Tafua, 21,
and Jason Salalilo, 20.
Salalilo, a prop, is also a St
Thomas’ product while hooker
Tafua hails from Shirley Boys’
High School and represented
Linwood Keas as a junior.
Tafua and Salalilo play for
the Warriors reserve grade side,
and Neal starred in the under
17 Harold Matthews Cup team
this year – winning player of the
match in the grand final against
the Knights as the Warriors won
the competition.
St Thomas and Linwood
premiers head coach Andrew
Auimatagi has worked closely
with all three players through
school and club rugby league. He
said it was rewarding to see them
progressing.
“I’m really proud of where
those guys are at the moment,”
Auimatagi said.
players in the Manu Samoa squad
for their match against Scotland
at Eden Park on July 18, as well as
August’s Pacific Nations Cup.
The halfback qualifies for Samoa
through his maternal grandfather
William Lam, who was born in
the island nation.
“ I’ve always had the dream to
represent Samoa and play for my
granddad. He passed away when
I was in high school, but he’ll be
smiling up there, that’s for sure,”
he said.
Lam is related to Samoan
international Ben Lam, his
brother, Blues midfielder AJ Lam,
and their uncle Pat Lam.
Pat Lam played 34 times for
While Tafua and Salalilo have
moved on from Auimatagi’s
guidance, he still coaches Neal at
St Thomas’.
The year 12 student, who is
194cm tall and weighs 115kg,
also plays at No 8 in the school’s
first XV rugby team and will
play back row for the rugby
league team in the national
championships later this year.
“ Bishop’s a pretty special
player,” Auimatagi said.
“But also the person he is – he’s
someone the boys love playing
with and our staff love having
him at school.
“I know he is still really young,
so I’m conscious of not putting
too much expectation on him.
He’s someone that just loves
playing footy and is doing really
well.”
Neal will finish his year 12
studies this year before heading
into NRL pre-season training in
November.
“ I know he is up to it and
he’s looking forward to it,”
Auimatagi said.
Neal’s next game for the St
Thomas first XV will be against
Christchurch Boys’ High School
tomorrow afternoon.
“ I’ve always had the dream
to represent Samoa and
play for my granddad. He
passed away when I was
in high school, but he’ll be
smiling up there, that’s for
sure.”
– Joel Lam
Samoa in the 1990s and also
coached the Blues from 2009-12.
“ We’ve got 300-plus cousins,
uncles and aunties. The Lam
family’s pretty big over in Samoa,
so we’re related somewhere down
the line,” he said.
“My granddad’s one of 21
siblings, and obviously those
brothers and sisters have all had
children of their own, then those
children have had daughters and
sons, so we’re all related.”
Lam marked his return to union
on Saturday, coming off the bench
to score a try for Burnside in their
64–35 Metro Premier win over
Christchurch.
He will continue playing for
the club until he links up with the
Samoa squad on July 9.
Lam said despite his switch back
to the 15-man game he was still
keeping his sporting options open.
“You want to take every
opportunity, and I went and
gave (league) a crack and there’s
nothing saying that door’s closed
either.”
Tight race for spots in
Metro rugby finals
The tussle for finals positions in
Metro Premier rugby is heating up
with two games remaining. Marist
Albion, University of Canterbury
and HSOB are separated by
just three points at the top, with
Linwood three points back and
New Brighton and Sydenham close
behind. Lincoln University and
Burnside just need a result from
either of their last two games to
make the top eight. Sumner are the
only team outside the eight that can
force their way in, needing to win
their last two games and hope other
results go their way.
Eric first got involved in the club
both were working as slaughtermen
top.
“Phil Shatford was a trainer (at
Papanui), and he was New Zealand
coach,” Eric said.
Disgraced trainer’s return
to be ‘tightly managed’
• By Sam Sherwood
A PROMINENT harness racing
trainer banned for eight years
after admitting cheating has been
granted a “partial return” to the
industry.
Nigel McGrath made headlines
after he was banned for eight
years in July 2020. The ban
came after he admitted charges
of attempting to administer a
prohibited substance by way of
nasal gastric tube, refusing to
make a statement, and obstructing
a racecourse investigator.
McGrath has 570 wins in his
20-year career with $6 million in
stake money.
Harness Racing New Zealand
chief executive Brad Steele said a
decision had been made allowing
him to make a “partial return” to
harness racing.
At the last Harness Racing
New Zealand annual meeting a
rule change was passed allowing
any banned party to apply for an
exemption if they have served at
least half their penalty, Steele said.
McGrath then applied for an
exemption.
HRNZ’s exemptions committee
met to consider the matter and
concluded that some of the
conditions regarding McGrath’s
ban would change.
This includes McGrath now
being allowed to earn prize money
again.
“It is however under tightly
managed conditions and it is up to
him to prove he has changed his
ways,” Steele said.
McGrath cannot hold a trainer’s
or driver’s licence and he cannot
act as a stable representative or
make official decisions on behalf
of a training operation. He is
allowed to be at a licenced person’s
property, but cannot be involved
in the training of any horse.
He will remain unable to enter
a racecourse when a meeting is
taking place.
Steele said there would be “zero
tolerance”.
“Any breach of these exemptions
would result in immediate
consequences, including the
potential reinstatement of his
disqualification.”
BANNED: Nigel
McGrath was
handed an
eight year ban
from harness
racing in
2020 after he
admitted to
cheating.
McGrath’s involvement would
be subject to regular review and
monitoring by the Racing Integrity
Board and HRNZ.
“The decision balances
disciplinary actions with
the industry’s obligations to
rehabilitate,” Steels said.
“A decision to provide anyone
with a chance to be re-integrated
should not be mistaken for
leniency.”
Steele acknowledged the
decision “would not be welcomed
by everyone in the sport”.
“We take those comments on
board and the issue has prompted
us to commit to a review of the
industry’s integrity standards and
processes.
“It will be an opportunity for
everyone in the sport to have their
say and will happen shortly.”
SOUTHERN UNITED will
have one week to enjoy their
Challenge Shield triumph before
putting it on the line for the first
time.
The Stingers, currently sixth
on the table but riding a threegame
winning streak, pulled
off a major upset on Saturday,
beating previously unbeaten
league leaders and former shield
holders Marist 1-0 at Marist
Park.
Cameron Douglas’s thirdquarter
goal and outstanding
performances from goalkeeper
Gareth Stewart and man-of-thematch
Isaac Brydon saw them
claim victory and take the shield
off their opponents. It marks the
first time Southern have held the
prestigious shield since 2020.
Southern centurion Ben
Owers said he was “stoked” to
have the shield back with the
club.
“We have a large number of
new players with most of them
unaware of the shield’s history
and importance,” he said.
“It was great to see us put in
such a good performance against
the competition leaders.”
Second-place HSOB/Burnside
was also upset 5-2 by Avon,
while Carlton Redcliffs beat
Hornby 2-1 and Harewood
thrashed University 12-0.
New HR-V: All grown up
but still finding its feet
IN A WORLD full of compact
urban SUVs, the previousgeneration
Honda HR-V was a
sales standout.
Its broad range of variants and
competitive pricing helped it
build a strong following. Now, a
recently released successor takes
the HR-V in a new direction –
streamlined to a single model.
It’s larger, more expensive,
and lands in a tougher economic
climate, where many households
are tightening their belts and
holding off on big-ticket purchases
like new cars.
New vehicle distributors across
New Zealand have responded
to the downturn by trimming
their model line-ups to remain
profitable.
That often means offering less
choice – and the new HR-V is a
prime example. Now available in
just one hybrid variant priced at
$45,800, it returns after a twoand-a-half-year
hiatus.
Despite the change in approach,
this is the first HR-V in
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
New Zealand to be offered as
a hybrid, and the move makes
sense. It features Honda’s latest
e:HEV hybrid system, promising
cleaner emissions, better
fuel economy, and punchier
performance. The previous
generation was sold in Japan and
other markets with hybrid tech
(as the Honda Vezel) and has
since gained popularity in New
Zealand as a used import – albeit
a pricey one.
The headline news is the shift
to hybrid-only, and it’s a move
likely to succeed. Powering the
HR-V is a two-motor hybrid
system – an enhanced version
of what’s found in the smaller
Jazz hatch. It seamlessly switches
between petrol and electric
power, with onboard computers
constantly optimising for performance
or efficiency. During
my test drive, this transition
was smooth and generally welltimed.
In EV Drive the lithium-ion
battery supplies power directly
to the electric motor, tap into
Hybrid Drive and the engine
supplies power to the electric
generator, which in turn feeds
into the electric motor. Finally
there’s Engine Drive. Here the
petrol motor is connected
directly to the wheels via a lockup
clutch and the drive force
transmitted straight from engine
to the wheels.
Maximum power from this
rather unconventional hybrid
system is rated at 96kW and
253Nm of torque at 3500rpm,
with the latter ensuring good
low-speed throttle response. It
makes a positive impression with
its smoothness and refinement.
The HR-V feels most at home
in urban environments, where it
strikes a smart balance between
sprightly performance and fuel
economy. However, it’s less
convincing at higher speeds.
Overtaking on the open road
reveals a lack of power reserves,
and while the electronically
controlled CVT (continuosly
variable transmission) handles
shifts well, it can feel strained
under pressure.
Inside, the HR-V offers one of
the roomiest cabins in the compact
SUV class, with generous
head, leg, and shoulder space for
both rows. Oddly, the rear seat
Rating out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Space 8; Fuel Economy; road test average
consumption 5.9L/100km Value for money 6
Safety – ANCAP crash test rating – Not available
Overall points out of 10: 7
only comes with two seatbelts,
limiting the HR-V to four passengers.
There’s clearly space for
a third, so this feels like a missed
opportunity – especially in an
otherwise practical vehicle.
The HR-V Sport trim is wellequipped,
featuring Honda’s
clever Magic Seat system for flexible
cargo options, and an electric
tailgate with programmable
height. It’s a practical setup for
everyday use.
Design-wise, the new HR-V is
a clear evolution from its chunkier
predecessor. It sports clean
lines and a more modern aesthetic,
although the prominent
horizontal slat grille detracts
from the otherwise sleek look.
The integrated rear door handles
aim to give it a coupe-like vibe,
but contribute to a slight identity
crisis: is it an SUV or a coupe?
On the safety front, Honda’s
Sensing Suite is included, with
advanced features such as lowspeed
autonomous emergency
braking. This system gives visual
and audio alerts before applying
the brakes if a collision seems
imminent.
The HR-V in its third iteration
provides a more engaging drive
built off the back of a sportier
and firmer suspension settings,
that’s still sufficiently compliant
to soak up rougher and bumpier
road surfaces.
The steering isn’t as easily
unsettled by these surfaces, but
I felt it could up its game with
more road feel, that was most
noticeable when tapping the test
car along over undulating terrain.
Through both tight corners
and sweeping curves taken at
brisker speeds body roll is more
pronounced, and not as nicely
contained as its larger sibling
the ZR-V, one of my favourite
Honda’s.
The new HR-V hybrid brings
refinement, efficiency, and strong
urban credentials to the table. It’s
a smart, if cautious, evolution of
the model.
However, the single-model
strategy, limited seating, and
modest highway performance
prevent it from truly leading the
class – or making the bold leap
forward that some might expect.
Public Notice
Notice for consultation on proposed enrolment scheme amendments
for several Christchurch Schools
The Ministry of Education has been working with St Anne’s School (Woolston), St Teresa’s School (Riccarton) and
Our Lady of Victories to develop proposed enrolment schemes, and with St Bernadette’s School (Hornby) to
develop a proposed enrolment scheme amendment under the Education and Training Act 2020 to assist these
schools to provide a fair and transparent process for enrolments where there is more demand for enrolments than
there are places available within their maximum rolls. Students will be able to enrol as per the criteria listed in the
proposed enrolment scheme.
The proposed enrolment scheme for St Anne’s School (Woolston) includes their Samoan Bilingual Special
Programme in their enrolment scheme.
As part of this process, we are consulting with the schools’ communities and with people living in the area.
A copy of the proposed enrolment schemes is available at https://www.education.govt.nz/have-your-say
If you have any feedback about the proposed enrolment schemes, please visit the website, read the information and
DISTRICT PLAN
PLAN CHANGE 13 - HERITAGE
Notice of withdrawal of part of Plan Change 13 -
Provisions decided in Plan Change 14 (PC14), Heritage
item descheduled in PC14, Extent of Residential
Heritage Area (RHA) proposed in Lyttelton
Christchurch City Council decided on 4 June 2025, in
accordance with Schedule 1, Clause 8D of the Resource
Management Act 1991, to withdraw from Plan Change 13:
Maximum height overlays for New Regent Street and the
Arts Centre, which are operative in the District Plan
(decided under PC14).
Heritage interface for New Regent Street and the Arts
Centre (rejected under PC14).
The following properties, from the proposed Lyttelton
RHA:
Bridle Path - 1, 1/8, 2/8, 6, 10, 10A, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16,
18, 1/20, 2/20, 3/20, 22.
Dudley Road - 2, 9, 13, 15, 17A, 17B, 19 (also referred to as
28A Cunningham Terrace), 21, 23.
These properties are being withdrawn from the RHA as
Council considers that they could be excluded without
having a major impact on the heritage values of the area
as a whole. The exclusion of these properties amends the
boundary of the proposed RHA in locations where there
are numerous buildings classified as ‘neutral’.
If you have any questions on either of these plan
changes, please contact planchange@ccc.govt.nz
mum, Ella Fitzgerald asked.
“It didn’t, no,” Cleo said.
“There’s all that adrenaline and
“We often say our house is like a
is when Ella knew she had something
from country and jazz to pop and
musical theatre. Her favourite artist
Thursday, June 19, 2025
Christchurch’s best read and largest circulating newspaper
year marked the 50th anniversary
of New Zealand’s biggest country
music festival.
The awards were Cleo’s first
major singing competition. Encouraged
by vocal coach Arlie Mc-
Cormick, she decided to audition,
and the family headed to Gore
with no expectations.
Cleo, who lives in Lyttelton,
auditioned with about 20 others in
the country rock, gospel and vocal
solo categories and advanced to
the finals in all three.
“Even that in itself, we were pretty
amazed by. We were jumping
The Star, January 23, 2025
The Star, January 23, 2025
up and down,”
Ella said.
The next day,
Cleo performed
in front of more
than 500 people
– her largest ever
audience.
“It was pretty
terrifying for her,
but also so much
fun. She’s born to be on stage,” Ella
said.
Cleo sang My Jesus by Anne
Wilson in the gospel category and
Miley Cyrus’ The Climb for her
vocal solo – the performance that
won her the overall junior title.
She was also second in the country
rock category for her rendition
of Hold My Horses by Madeline
Edwards.
Her overall win also earned Cleo
an invitation to perform and compete
at the Golden Guitar Awards
in Tamworth, New South Wales,
Australia’s country music capital,
in January. The city’s annual country
music festival attracts more
than 40,000 people.
The trip will cost about $3500,
and Cleo and her family are now
fundraising to get her there.
“If we raise enough money, I’m
going to be so excited,” Cleo said.
Along with her title, Cleo also
received a Martin guitar, a microphone
from Strawberry Sound,
$500, a year’s honorary membership
at the Gore Country Music
Club, and $100 for each category
she won.
She is also keeping busy off
the competition stage. Cleo will
be playing Marty the Zebra
in her school’s production
of Madagascar, and will be
performing her own show, and
taking part in Shay Horay’s Palava
at the Lyttelton Arts Festival.
“The main thing is keeping it
fun for her. We’re just concentrating
on that and if she gets too tired
we can pull back,” Ella said.
Cleo has to serve a stand down
period from competing in the
Golden Guitar Awards until
she turns 13 and is eligible for
the intermediate section. In the
meantime, she will return next
year to perform and present
trophies to the new winners.
