Dedication to community safety earns

THERE IS NOT much Josh
Tabley hasn’t encountered during
his 19 years patrolling with the
Christchurch South Community
Patrol.
From burglaries to missing
people, attending multiple traffic
crashes, assisting injured people
and reporting suspicious activity,
he has seen it all.
Tabley’s long service has seen
him nominated for Canterbury
volunteer of the year. The annual
awards recognise outstanding
efforts and achievements by
volunteers of all ages in all
sectors across Canterbury.
Judges praised Tabley’s
dedication to both frontline
and governance roles, and his
outstanding efforts to improve
community safety.
In addition to patrolling
southern Christchurch,
Tabley manages the roster
for the patrol’s base radio
system, helping co-ordinate
communication between units
across Canterbury.
Tabley lives in Oxford but
grew up in Hoon Hay, part of the
area he now helps to keep safe –
which adds personal meaning to
his community work.
A keen badminton player,
he voluntarily runs the Oxford
Badminton Club which he
started in 2020. On top of
that, he operates a free local

as he stopped to fix it.

Achilles tendon in my leg.”
However, the police’s loss was
Community Patrol’s gain.
“I like to help people in need.”
Tabley said the patrols work very
closely with the Christchurch
Police, which he enjoys.
He joined Christchurch South
Community Patrol in 2006 as a
20-year-old. At the time, the group
had just 12 volunteers, patrolling
once a week due to the low
numbers.
“I think I was the youngest
member in the South Island when I
started,” Tabley said.
Since then, he has worked to
encourage younger people to join.
The patrol, which covers areas from
Halswell to Ferrymead, now boasts
about 50 volunteers of all ages.

New ‘Hollywood’ theatre
could open later this month

THE COUNTDOWN is on to the
opening of the replacement for the
iconic Hollywood movie theatre in
Sumner.
The 1938 building in Marriner
St has been completely renovated
and is planned to open as the Silky
Otter Hollywood on Saturday,
June 28.
The opening date is dependent
on receiving city council consent.
“It’s great to finally get these
things open, there’s been a lot of
build-up trying to get this cinema
open,” said Silky Otter founder
Neil Lambert.
“We’ve already got a really wellestablished
and loved (cinema) in
Christchurch. We wanted to make
sure that this had that feel to it as
well.”
The first movie to screen will
be F1, which stars Brad Pitt as a
Formula 1 driver who comes out of
retirement.
“It’s a classic Hollywood
blockbuster. It has to be seen
in a theatre, it can’t be watched
anywhere else,” said Lambert.
He intends the cinema to be
open in time for the July school
holidays and the release of other
blockbusters, including Superman,
Jurassic World Rebirth and How to
Train Your Dragon.
Lambert says once the city
council gives the green light, “we
will be pretty
much ready to go”.

with Lambert
now waiting
on projectors
and kitchen
equipment.

“It’ll be unrecognisable when
customers walk inside, I think
everybody will be pleased with the
results,” he said.
It was formerly home to
Hollywood Cinemas, the oldest
movie theatre in Christchurch,
owned by cinema pioneer Lang
Masters for more than six decades.
Masters died, aged 92, in August
2023.
To pay homage, the new cinema
will be renamed Silky Otter
Hollywood.

“ It’s an institution, so we kind
of wanted to keep it that way,”
Lambert said.
The cinema will not host any
major events for the opening,
rather Lambert prioritised getting
doors open as soon as possible.
“ They (cinemas) are almost
looked upon as community
centres, strangely enough, so for
me, the joy of opening cinemas is
to really just get the public in.”
Sumner will be Silky Otter’s
eighth cinema in New Zealand.
The first was built in Auckland in
2019 as a way to re-imagine the
cinematic experience.
“A lot of the older picture
houses were kind of falling away
and not really keeping up with the
times.
“It’s a hospitality experience
in a night out, that’s what we’re
bringing to Sumner and it
fits well into the community,”
Lambert said.

Heritage focus for King’s Birthday photo competition

Charles III’s official birthday with
a youth-focused event at the Ilex
Centre in the Botanic Gardens.
The evening featured a student
photography competition highlighting
personal ties between
New Zealand and the UK.
Guests viewed an exhibition
of the shortlisted entries, with
British High Commissioner Iona
Thomas praising the “creativity
and emotion” behind the work.
The winning image, by Sam
Edwards, showed a vintage British
car driving through graffitilined
Christchurch streets – a
symbol of heritage crossing
generations.
“It was a privilege to see such
powerful visual work in one
space. The students brought
depth, originality, and a real
sense of narrative to their pieces,”
Thomas said.
The five shortlisted entries
are pictured below with the
photographers explaining the
pictures in their own words.
This is a photo of the grave of
Jane Deans, married to John
Deans. The Deans family were
some of the earliest settlers in
Canterbury who arrived after
sailing over from the UK and
are all buried in this cemetery.
I have personally always felt
a connection to cemeteries
and the power they hold.
This specific cemetery is the
Church of England cemetery
on Barbadoes St, and in
my opinion it is tragically

raised in the UK before moving to Christchurch where I
started high school. This car was also imported from the
UK, so it has made the same journey I have. Seeing it here

exploring Derwent’s Reserve
(England). I found out about
Derwent village which was
drowned (when a reservoir was
created) and the remnants
of the village resurfacing
periodically. Using the tree as a
subject to link to the woods and
the village, I used expired Kodak
film and shot on an old Agfa
camera to get closer to the time
when the village was drowned.

From 24 June, 2025, some
changes are happening relating
to ammunition and the Firearms
Registry. These will help us
ensure ammunition is only being
sold to current firearms licence
holders, and support the smooth
uptake of the Registry over the
coming years. Here’s what you
need to know.
1. When buying ammunition, the sale will be recorded by the
firearms dealer or ammunition seller
On and from 24 June 2025, the firearms dealer or ammunition seller selling
you ammunition, must record the ammunition sale in the Firearms Registry
using the online Dealer Transactions form. This is a record of the sale, not a
registration of ammunition.
As the licence holder, you do not need to record the ammunition you
purchase. The Arms Regulations say the firearms dealer or ammunition
seller needs to record the sale. This is at the time the ammunition is
dispatched or handed over, or immediately after. As a licence holder, you
should expect that when you purchase ammunition you’ll need to assist the
dealer or ammunition seller with information required for the online Dealer
Transactions form, for example, your firearms licence number.
2. The first time you buy ammunition, you’ll need to register
all your firearms – if you have not done so already
After 24 June 2025, licence holders will have an activating circumstance
when they purchase ammunition from a firearms dealer or ammunition
seller - if they haven’t already had one. This means you will need to register
all the firearms and arms items in your possession within 30 days of
purchasing ammunition, if you haven’t already registered your firearms.
Once you have entered your details into the Firearms Registry, you must
keep your information up to date when buying or selling arms items.
