JULY 2025 | THE FIGHT 5
In this issue Victor Melamed explores why Pete Buttigieg makes the
GOP nervous (“A Better Tomorrow,” page 12-13).
Buttigieg continues to be a significant concern for the Republican Party
as the 2028 presidential election approaches. His unique combination
of intellectual prowess, articulate communication, and a compelling
background — as a Rhodes Scholar, Afghanistan veteran, and former
mayor—makes him a formidable potential Democratic candidate.
He challenges Republican attempts to caricature him, speaking with
measured conviction that resonates with a broad range of voters, from
suburbanites to working-class communities.
Perhaps most unsettling for the GOP is Buttigieg’s identity as the first
openly gay major presidential candidate. His comfortable presence on
the national stage alongside his husband, Chasten, forces the Republican
Party to confront evolving cultural norms.
While some may try to leverage his sexuality against him, such tactics
often backfire with younger and more moderate voters who increasingly
value diversity. His candidacy directly challenges deeply ingrained biases,
posing a substantial hurdle for a party often struggling with outreach to
diverse communities.
Also in the issue — a report on Caleb Degala-Burnett, a promising
eighth-grade baseball player, facing direct discrimination from Valley
Christian School in California, which rescinded its recruitment offer due to
his fathers’ same-sex marriage (“Dream Denied,” page 11).
The school explicitly cited a conflict with its “Christian values,”
illustrating a widespread loophole in federal law that allows private
institutions to deny admission based on sexual orientation. This incident,
which deeply angered Caleb and drew criticism from Equality California,
underscores how legal gaps perpetuate such discriminatory practices
against LGBTQ+ families.

Some residents and business owners

School rejects top athlete due to
parents’ same-sex marriage
Rising baseball talent Caleb Degala-Burnett, an eighthgrader
from Union City, was actively recruited by Valley
Christian School in Dublin, California, for its strong
academics and baseball program. Recognized as a “college
prospect,” Caleb and his father, Mike Degala, discussed
financial aid for the $24,000 annual tuition, according to The San
Francisco Standard.
However, the school’s interest abruptly ceased. Mike Degala
reported that a school official stated their “same-sex marriage
doesn’t align with our Christian values” and that the school
“would lose supporters.”
Caleb, who had previously faced childhood taunts but not
institutional discrimination, expressed his anger, emphasizing
that “It really shouldn’t matter what your family is.” While federal
law prohibits discrimination based on race, color, and national
origin, it does not prevent private schools from rejecting
students based on sexual orientation.
Jorge Reyes Salinas of Equality California called the situation
“unacceptable regardless of the school’s private or religious
status.” Caleb’s father, Master Burnett, raised by Southern
Baptist missionaries, expressed disappointment, stating, “I don’t
consider discrimination a Christian value.” The family is moving
forward, with Caleb attending James Logan High School, his
father concluding, “It’s their loss.” n

A
BETTER
TOMORROW
Why Pete Buttigieg Makes The GOP Nervous
BY VICTOR MELAMED
As eyes turn towards the upcoming
drama of the 2028 presidential
election, one figure consistently
causes a ripple of unease within
the Republican Party: Pete Buttigieg.
The former Mayor of South Bend,
Indiana, and former Secretary of
Transportation, Buttigieg possesses a
unique blend of attributes that make
him a formidable potential candidate
for the Democratic nomination, and
consequently, a source of significant
apprehension for the GOP.
INTELLECT AND APPEAL
His intellectual prowess and
articulate communication style
are often cited as major strengths.
Buttigieg’s ability to calmly and
thoughtfully dissect complex policy
issues, often in appearances on
conservative media, has earned him a
reputation as a clear and unflappable
debater. This stands in stark contrast
to some of the more boisterous and
often gaffe-prone figures that have
dominated recent political cycles, and
it presents a challenge for Republicans
seeking to caricature him.
They find it harder to dismiss “Mayor
Pete” as a radical liberal when he
speaks with such measured conviction.
Furthermore, Buttigieg’s background
offers a compelling narrative. A
Rhodes Scholar, a veteran of the war
in Afghanistan, and a former mayor of a
mid-sized Rust Belt city, he embodies a
blend of intellectualism and practical, onthe-ground
experience. This resonates
with a wide range of voters, from collegeeducated
suburbanites to working-class
communities, giving him a broader
appeal than some other Democratic
hopefuls.
SOURCE OF DISCOMFORT
But perhaps the most profound source
of Republican discomfort lies in his
identity as the first openly gay major
presidential candidate.
In a political climate where LGBTQ+
“WHILE SOME

CANDIDACY BASED
ON HIS SEXUALITY,
THE REALITY IS THAT

ESPECIALLY WITH

rights continue to be a flashpoint,
Buttigieg’s presence on the national
stage, and his genuine comfort in his
identity alongside his husband Chasten,
forces a reckoning for a party that often
relies on traditional cultural touchstones.
While some within the GOP might
attempt to dismiss his candidacy based
on his sexuality, the reality is that such
attacks often backfire, especially with
younger and more moderate voters
who increasingly embrace diversity and
inclusion. His very existence as a viable
presidential contender challenges deeply
ingrained stereotypes and biases, and
for a party that often struggles with
outreach to diverse communities, this is a
significant hurdle.
REPUBLICAN STRATEGY
For the 2028 elections, the Democratic
field is already taking shape, with figures
like Kamala Harris, Governors Gavin
Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer,
and Senator Josh Shapiro also being
discussed as potential contenders.
Buttigieg’s early moves, including
recent appearances in key early primary
states like Iowa, signal his continued
national ambitions, reinforcing the idea
that he is actively considering another run
for the highest office.
The Republican strategy against
Buttigieg, should he emerge as the
Democratic nominee, will likely be
multifaceted. They may attempt to
paint him as too liberal for mainstream
America, despite his often pragmatic
and moderate policy stances. They might
also try to highlight his relative youth or
perceived lack of executive experience
compared to some of his rivals. However,
the “gay factor” remains a potent, if often
unspoken, element of their calculation.
How they navigate a general election
against a highly intelligent, articulate, and
openly gay veteran will be a true test of the
evolving dynamics of American politics.
Pete Buttigieg, through his very being
and political acumen, is forcing the
GOP to confront a new reality, and that,
more than anything, is what makes them
nervous.

“Noah’s Arc: The Movie” explores fatherhood and
new beginnings, now streaming on Paramount+
The beloved “Noah’s Arc” universe expands once more with
the highly anticipated premiere of “Noah’s Arc: The Movie,”
now streaming exclusively on Paramount+.
Released last month, this new film marks a significant
milestone, arriving 20 years after the original series first debuted,
and continuing the rich narratives of its iconic characters.
Visionary creator and executive producer Patrik-Ian Polk returns
to helm this latest chapter, which catches up with Noah, Alex, Ricky,
and Chance as they navigate new stages of life.
At the heart of the new movie is the evolving journey of Noah (Darryl
Stephens) and Wade (Jensen Atwood), who are now expecting twins.
Their lives take an unexpected turn when both are offered their dream
jobs, forcing them to grapple with the momentous decision of which
partner will take on the role of a stay-at-home parent.
“It’s fascinating to explore how these characters have grown
and changed over the years,” Patrik-Ian Polk shared in a recent
interview. “We wanted to delve into themes that resonate with our
audience now, and the journey of fatherhood for gay men, and
the choices that come with it, felt incredibly timely and universal. It
brings new layers of drama, comedy, and heartfelt moments that
‘Noah’s Arc’ is known for.”
The film also delves into Alex (Rodney Chester) and Trey’s (Gregory
BY PATRICK TSAKUDA
Kieth) experiences raising a teenager, and explores the realities of gay
men moving into middle age, touching on health and relationship
dynamics for Ricky (Christian Vincent) and Chance (Doug Spearman).
The original core cast members—Darryl Stephens, Christian
Vincent, Rodney Chester, and Doug Spearman—all reprise their
roles, joined by returning favorites like Jensen Atwood as Wade
and Wilson Cruz as Dr. Junito Vargas.
The movie also features exciting special appearances from
television legends Jasmine Guy and TC Carson, alongside reality
“IT’S FASCINATING TO EXPLORE HOW THESE CHARACTERS HAVE
GROWN AND CHANGED OVER THE YEARS. WE WANTED TO DELVE

TV stars TS Madison and Kennedy Davenport, among others.
“Noah’s Arc: The Movie” follows the events of the 2020 reunion
special “Noah’s Arc: The ‘Rona Chronicles,” offering fans a
seamless continuation of the story. Its release during Pride Month
reinforces the series’ enduring legacy as a vital space for authentic
Black queer representation and joy.
“The unwavering support from our fans has been truly incredible,”
added Darryl Stephens in a recent press event. “To bring these
stories back, especially two decades later, and to see new generations
discover them, is a testament to the power of seeing yourself reflected
on screen. We hope this film continues to offer that same sense of
community and validation that the original series did.”
Viewers can now stream the film exclusively on Paramount+.

The right care
for every

Compassionate Behavioral Health
When alarming symptoms arise, you want the best care possible. And when
it comes to your mental health, or that of a loved one, that means getting
to a hospital with specialized expertise in treating a range of emotional,
behavioral and developmental disorders. At Dignity Health hospitals in
L.A. County and the Inland Empire, we offer comprehensive hospitalized
care and outpatient day services for adults 18 years of age or older who
are experiencing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, schizophrenia
and other conditions. Get to know more about our compassionate programs
before an emergency strikes at dignityhealth.org/socal.
