DVSA CRACKS DOWN ON
‘GHOST’ MOTS WITH NEXT
STAGE OF PHOTO TRIAL
l First trial of garages taking photos of cars in garages when they come in for
an MOT test completed
l Over 13,000 photos successfully uploaded during six-week nationwide trial
l No impact on MOT test times, with standard 40-minute duration maintained
– and garages keen to continue using the software
The Driver and Vehicle Standards
Agency (DVSA) has successfully
completed the first trial of an
initiative where photos were taken of
vehicles at MOT, designed to boost road
safety and combat fraud.
This is part of a fightback against ‘ghost’
MOTs – where some certificates are issued
without vehicles ever being physically
inspected.
The six-week trial involved 172 MOT
testers across 62 garages taking photos
of vehicles at the start of MOT tests,
providing evidence that cars were
physically present during testing. These
images were automatically uploaded to
the digital MOT Testing Service (MTS),
creating a verifiable record attached to
each test.
DVSA saw over 13,000 photos
successfully uploaded during the trial
period with participating garages
uploading 450-500 images a day, with 1
garage owner describing it as a “painless
and stress-free” experience.
Working with garages
to keep our roads safe
The trial included a diverse range of
testing stations, from independent
garages to chains, dealerships and local
council testing stations, covering all
vehicle classes.
The trial found no significant impact on
testing times. For the top 10 garages in the
trial, the average test time remained at 40
minutes, with retest times increasing only
slightly from 7 to 9 minutes – a gap DVSA is
already working to close.
Chris Price, DVSA Head of MOT Policy,
said: “While only a small number of
testers are involved in ghost MOTs, it does
happen and puts our roads at risk.
“We want to create a level playing
field for all, where high quality is the
default, and the scourge of fraudulent or
substandard testing is minimised.
“The trial has shown real promise so far
– we’re excited to roll it out further.”
Following this success, DVSA will launch
a wider second trial to test capturing
images at scale before implementing a
phased nationwide rollout. The agency will
use the next phase to refine the software
based on user feedback to ensure it works
efficiently for all garage types.

face business. The appetite for in-person
connection has never been stronger.
Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of SMMT,
said: “Automechanika Birmingham is now
firmly established as the UK’s unmissable
event for the aftermarket sector and
automotive supply chain. At a time of
significant transformation for the industry, it
provides a vital platform to come together,
share ideas, attract new talent and unlock
future opportunities.”
A major new addition this year was
Motorvate – a feature space designed to
ignite interest and careers in automotive
among students, apprentices and early
career professionals. With competitions,
insightful talks and hands-on experiences
running throughout the show, it delivered
a bold new vision for inspiring the next
generation.
The show also saw the return of the
Aftermarket Hub, Modern Garage,
Workshop Hub and Paint & Spray Live,
alongside fan favourites such as Vehicle
Detailing Live and Body Repair Live, all
delivering over 150 hours of free training
sessions and covering topics including
diagnostics, EV servicing, ADAS calibration,
business development and more. Also
featured was Innovation4Mobility, an
educational theatre highlighting the future
of connected and sustainable automotive
technologies, further enriching the event’s
focus on forward-thinking solutions.
Kevan Wooden, CEO LKQ UK & Ireland
said: “Automechanika Birmingham is a mustattend
event in the automotive calendar,
as it showcases a thriving aftermarket with
a promising future. It’s more important
than ever for the sector to pull together
in retaining and attracting future talent,
and our participation in the Motorvate
programme highlighted the exciting career
opportunities available to all. “We’re fully
committed to ensuring technicians of every
level are equipped with the latest skills so
the aftermarket can thrive long into the
future, which is reflected via our awardwinning
training initiatives at LKQ Academy
centres across the UK.
“From welcoming fresh talent at our
Motorvate stand, to promoting our extensive
range and services, and engaging with loyal
and new customers on our Emotive and
Modern Garage stands, the event was a
huge success from start to finish.”
“Automechanika Birmingham 2025 was
an outstanding event for the aftermarket
sector,” added Mark Hallam, Head of
Marketing ZF Aftermarket UK. “It gave us
the perfect opportunity to engage directly
with workshops, distributors, and industry
professionals, while showcasing our latest
product innovations and services. The
quality of the audience and the relevance
of the content made it one of the most
valuable events in the calendar. We’re
proud to have been a Gold Sponsor and are
already looking forward to returning – it’s an
unmissable date for anyone serious about
the UK aftermarket.”
Networking remained a core element of
the event, with standout moments including
the Women in Automotive Drinks Reception,
IAAF Networking Drinks, and the SMMT Meet

procurement conversations.
Another new stand-out feature for this
year was the Thirty Under 30 Awards, hosted
on the Motorvate Ignite Arena, recognising
the brightest young talent in the industry,
drawing a large and enthusiastic audience.
Meanwhile, the Garage Awards, hosted by
the IAAF and supported by LKQ Euro Car
Parts, celebrated excellence across the
independent aftermarket.
Exhibitors across the show floor shared a
plethora of product launches, innovations

services to support their customers in realtime.
Gold Customers within the
Automechanika Lovers programme for this
year’s event included: Autel, Bosch, Elring,
Launch Tech UK, Mann + Hummel, Stanley,
TecAlliance, Walker and ZF Aftermarket, all
demonstrating exceptional commitment,
innovation and leadership across the global
Automechanika platform.
Joanne Knowles, Event Director at
Messe Frankfurt, commented: “This year’s
Automechanika Birmingham has been our
strongest yet, not only in numbers, but in
energy, ambition and impact. The feedback
from visitors and exhibitors has been
incredible, and we’re delighted to have
delivered a show that continues to sit at the
heart of the UK automotive calendar. The
industry has chosen Automechanika as the
place to come together, to tackle its biggest
challenges, celebrate success and shape a
stronger future.”
Exhibitors and visitors will also return next
June for the UK Garage and Bodyshop Event
2026, focused exclusively on the needs of
workshops, technicians and body repair
specialists, and packed with even more
tools, technology and training.

The Motor Ombudsman has unveiled
its newly updated Motor Industry
Codes of Practice to broaden their
scope in line with the changing face of the
UK’s automotive sector, which has seen
the evolution of legislation, technological
innovation, and shifts in consumer buying
behaviour. The four refreshed Codes
of Practice, which cover the entire
customer vehicle purchase and ownership
experience, take immediate effect, and
write a new chapter in the history of the
long-established and comprehensive best
practice guidelines for businesses in the
motor industry.
Today, The Motor Ombudsman’s
comprehensive portfolio of Chartered
Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)-approved
Codes of Practice play an integral role
in the self-regulation of the automotive
sector, and more than 7,500 independent
garages and franchise dealers, as well
as 46 vehicle manufacturers and 21
extended vehicle warranty providers,
have voluntarily committed to delivering
high standards of work and service to
consumers beyond those required by law.
In tandem with UK legislation, the best
practice clauses contained across the four
Codes are equally central to the delivery of
independent, impartial and fair decisions
based on the evidence submitted to The
Motor Ombudsman by consumers and
businesses.
With further changes brought to the
Codes over the past decade since The
Motor Ombudsman was established in
2016, such as the recent extension of
the Service and Repair Code to cover
consumers using accredited mobile
repairers, the latest amendments, which
have been incorporated following a period
consultation with Motor Ombudsmanaccredited
businesses and the Chartered

Trading Standards Institute (CTSI), have
been made to evolve existing guidelines in
line with the fast-changing trajectory of
the automotive sector. On this point, the
Codes see the addition of a new series of
sections and commitments to reflect the
incorporation of new technologies within
vehicles, the expansion of manufacturer
retailing channels, the wide range of
insured and non-insured products and
services now on offer to customers when
purchasing and owning a vehicle, and the
growing prominence of alternative fuelled
vehicles (AFVs), such as electric cars (EVs).
The principal changes incorporated
within The Motor Ombudsman’s evolved
Motor Industry Codes of Practice, are
namely:
● The addition of specific clauses relating
to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
(ADAS) and self- driving features;
● New guidance for the delivery of
roadside assistance and service plans;
● Dedicated sections on paint, perforation
and manufacturer base warranties, and in
relation to guidelines on the sale of alloy
wheel and Guaranteed Asset Protection
(GAP) insurance;
● The introduction of a requirement for
staff training in relation to the maintenance
of alternatively- fuelled vehicles (AFVs),
such as electric cars and hybrids; and
● Clauses governing the sale of vehicles
where an agency model has been adopted
by vehicle manufacturers.
The four Codes of Practice equally
feature a refreshed visual identity
incorporating the recently updated
Chartered Trading Standards Institute
(CTSI) Approved Codes insignia.
Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman
and Managing Director of The Motor
Ombudsman, said: “With our Codes of
Practice established as a key driving force
in the self-regulation of the UK’s motor
industry, it is important that they remain
aligned and keep pace with technological
advancements and innovation, as well as
with the latest trends in consumer buying
behaviour, so as to provide the best
possible level of coverage and protection.
This is especially pertinent as the profile of
car ownership changes more profoundly
over the coming years, as a gradual shift is
made away from the internal combustion
engine on the road to 2030 and beyond.”
Bill added: “To enable a smooth
transition to the refreshed Codes of
Practice, we have been consulting and
supporting accredited businesses with a
number of training initiatives and additional
resources to ensure that the industry is
fully up to speed with the changes, which
take immediate effect.”

Thinkcar UK makes online
programming and coding
affordable for independents
Vehicle technicians can now access OE-level coding and programming at
a significantly reduced cost, as Thinkcar UK announces a new promotional
price on its Euro Master diagnostic tool.
The tool, which normally retails for
£1,695 + VAT, is now available for
£1,195 + VAT through Thinkcar’s
national dealer network. The company
says the move is designed to make online
ECU programming and advanced module
coding more accessible to technicians
outside of main dealer networks.
Developed to bring OE-level diagnostics
to independent workshops, the Euro
Master combines full-system fault
finding with the ability to perform online
programming and coding on vehicles
including BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen
Group, Land Rover, Nissan, and more.
Secure gateway access for FCA vehicles is
also supported.
“Demand for diagnostic tools with
programming capabilities has grown
steadily in recent years, as vehicles
become more software-dependent and
manufacturer systems more tightly locked
down,” said Alex Gillbanks, Managing
Director of Thinkcar UK. “Tools like the
Euro Master close that gap, offering not
only compatibility with OE protocols,
but also features such as automatic VIN
scanning, wireless report generation, and
service functions ranging from injector
coding to DPF regeneration.”
The Euro Master is also modular,
allowing garages to add capabilities
over time, such as ADAS calibration and
oscilloscope modules, making it a scalable
solution as workshops evolve.
Thinkcar UK say the price reduction
reflects a broader goal of enabling more
workshops to handle complex vehicle
systems in-house, without relying on
dealer tools or subletting work.
“At this price point, it opens up
advanced diagnostics and programming
to a much wider section of the market,”
said Alex. “It’s a genuine step forward
for independents who want to stay
competitive with modern vehicle
technology.”
The promotional pricing is
available now across the full
Thinkcar UK dealer network.

INDEPENDENT GARAGE ASSOCIATION RESPONDS
TO RACHEL REEVES’ SPENDING REVIEW
Having reflected on the Chancellor’s Spending Review, the Independent Garage Association (IGA) welcomes
the focus on economic growth, particularly the commitment to regional investment and the enhancement
of technical education. However, they are concerned that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), long
described as the backbone of the UK economy, may once again have been overlooked.
While the regional and local growth fund is a
positive step forward and the IGA supports the
ambition to stimulate productivity across the
country, the announcements lacked targeted measures
to address the day-to-day challenges faced by the
nation’s SMEs. Independent garages, along with other
small businesses, are operating in a difficult economic
climate and need tangible support to ensure long-term
sustainability and job creation.
Jonathan Douglass, Director of the IGA, said: “We
support the Government’s ambition for long-term,
sustainable growth, and welcome the renewed focus on
apprenticeships and regional development. Independent
garages continue to provide vital services in keeping the
UK mobile, and with the right support, the independent
garage sector can help drive forward the UK’s economic
and environmental goals.”
The Government recognises the importance of
transitioning to net zero, with the EV sector playing a
critical role in achieving this goal. Independent garages
are essential to maintaining and servicing the UK’s growing
electric vehicle fleet, however, greater investment
in skills training, infrastructure, and accessibility for
independent operators is needed to enable their full
contribution to this transition.
Douglass commented: “We are encouraged by the
Government’s commitment to review post-16 education
and the expansion of apprenticeship opportunities. This
is a welcome move for our sector, where skills shortages
remain a serious concern. Strengthening vocational
pathways will help to develop the next generation of
highly skilled technicians and futureproof the workforce as the
automotive industry continues to evolve.”
The IGA remains committed to working collaboratively with
the government to ensure independent garages are empowered
to thrive in the changing economic landscape.

ONKAR CHAHAL
ANY COLOUR YOU WANT
AS LONG AS IT’S BLACK
That’s all well and good, but I don’t like
black cars. Why? Polished and in the
sun they look okay, but for the rest of
the time they just look . . . BLACK!
By Onkar Chahal
Why do I dislike them so much I hear you ask?
Simple. They have no colour, no imagination. But I do have a
technical reason for disliking them too, allow me to share it
with you.
Black cars absorb light so it hides the shape of the car. Not
the general outline of the car, no it hides the design features,
the creases and curves. Next time you see a black car just take
a minute to look at it in a side profile. It looks slab sided and a
mass of metal. Now look at the same car in colour, preferably a
12 THE GARAGE
12,13 Opinion Onkar.indd 1 01/07/2025 14:47
bright metallic but any other colour will do. Now when you look at
the side profile you’ll notice the crease running down the side and
the curve around the wheel arch.
If you look at a black door mirror it just looks like a spot on the
side of a car, whereas in a colour you’ll see notice the curve of the
housing. Many years ago you could have any colour you wanted as
long as it was black, now you can have any colour you want. BMW
has its own Individual programme where you can have any colour
or mixes of on any model you liked the look of. Google the Karl
Lagerfield 7 series if you don’t believe me, and remember that was
in the 90’s.
I worked at JLR’s Special Vehicle Operation and was lucky to
have a small part in building the Project 7’s and a couple of the
Defender’s used in the James Bond film Spectre. The most special
car? The Range Rover Trinity, that was simply stunning inside and
out. They had serious interest from the middle east for that car
but management thought it was better to take it off sale (another
inspired management decision!)
The reason for sharing this information is that onsite was the
most advanced paint booth in the world at the time. The idea was
simple, you could take anything object to them and they will be
able to produce a paint that matches exactly. So your favourite
suite/hand bag/tie/wallpaper could be replicated and sprayed
onto whichever model you wanted.
Unfortunately that didn’t come cheap and money is no
guarantee of taste as they say! I was building a defender one day
and it was Eastnor green with a French racing blue roof which
looked as bad as it sounds trust me. I flagged this unusual colour
combination to management who checked the order to confirm it
was correct, which it was. Apparently it belonged to Ralph Speths
daughter who went racing and wanted the roof to stand out in the
car park so it was easier to find.
Cars look best in silver.
Back to the colour of cars though, and in my opinion all cars look
best in silver. Why? Cars are predominantly made of metal which in
its natural and unpainted state is….silver. That philosophy is easily
applied to wheels too, which again seem to be painted fashionably
black these days. My mate has a Black Jaguar XK-R with the
proper 5 litre supercharge engine which had black wheels when
he bought it. A couple of years ago he had the wheels refurbished
back to the original silver finish, and the difference was incredible.
It made the wheels look much larger as they stand out much more.
I was on a large M5 event last year, and every one was a bright
colour such as yellow, green or red, as were some of the support
M3’s. When you see them lined up it makes you realise just how
lazy people are when it comes to choosing colours.
So next time you choose a new car, be imaginative, be bold.
But don’t go for black.

Green Flag’s investment underscores
the company’s commitment to delivering
smart, tech-enabled roadside assistance
and gives motorists peace of mind that
their recovery operator is equipped to
handle the latest vehicle systems.
“Our patrol technicians need to quickly
and accurately assess a wide variety of
vehicles every day, so having the right
diagnostic tools on board is essential to
delivering a fast and efficient service,”
said Damon Jowett, Director of Customer,
Roadside & Network Services.
Launched earlier this year, the mega
macs S 20 connects wirelessly via
Bluetooth or USB-C to Android devices,
delivering fast and flexible diagnostics
wherever it’s needed.
To support the deployment, Hella
Gutmann delivered a ‘train-the-trainer’
programme, ensuring Green Flag’s
technical leads can pass on in-depth
knowledge of the system. The rollout will
continue in phases, with additional units
and support provided as Green Flag’s

HEVRA reacts to
Chancellor’s 2025
Spending Review
Following Chancellor Rachel Reeves MP’s delivery of the Government’s 2025 Spending Review, the Hybrid
and Electric Vehicle Repair Alliance (HEVRA) has welcomed the renewed focus on clean energy and green jobs,
while urging the government to ensure that the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) aftersales sector is not left behind.
The Spending Review outlined increased investment in
renewable energy projects, public charging infrastructure,
and green innovation. However, there was limited
mention of funding or policy support for the independent
aftermarket, technician training, or service infrastructure
essential to maintaining the UK’s growing EV fleet.
Craig Scragg, Head of Business at HEVRA, said, “It’s
encouraging to see the government’s commitment to
decarbonisation reflected in this Spending Review.
However, we cannot afford to ignore the critical role of the
aftermarket in the electric vehicle transition.
Independent garages and technicians must be equipped
with the tools, training and support to service and repair
electric vehicles safely and effectively. Without this, we risk
creating a two-tier system where EV owners are forced to
rely on main dealers, driving up costs and limiting access,
especially in rural and underserved communities.
HEVRA urges the Chancellor to work with the aftermarket
to develop targeted funding for EV technician upskilling
and ensure independent businesses remain part of a fair,
affordable, and sustainable transport ecosystem.
HEVRA stands ready to collaborate with government
departments and industry stakeholders to ensure that
the transition to zero-emissions transport is equitable,
affordable, and fully supported.”

Price isn’t the problem, it’s value
that counts, says Tim Benson
Speaking at Automechanika Birmingham during an ALLDATA panel discussion, Tim Benson, Managing Director at Oldfields Garage and
founder of Oldfields Automotive Consulting, issued a rallying call to independent garages: get your processes right before taking the job.
Drawing on years of experience
running his multi-award-winning
family business, Tim warned against
the pitfalls of making snap judgments in
diagnostic work. Instead, he argued for the
importance of structured assessments,
technical capability, and data-informed
decision making, long before a vehicle
enters the workshop.
“This is where data fills the gap,” he
said. “It gives you the reference points
you need, what tests to do and what
information to gather in advance. That
understanding helps avoid turning
someone else’s problem into your own.”
Tim also emphasised the role of process
in customer satisfaction. “If the technician
can’t complete the job and the customer
walks away unhappy, that’s two points of
failure,” he said. “Building value starts right
at the beginning, with a transparent and
structured process. That’s what justifies
your pricing and protects your team.”
He challenged garages to reflect not
just on what jobs they can do, but what
jobs they should take on. “You need to be
honest about your tooling, your skill level,
your capacity. And when you do take the
job, it needs to be one you know you can
complete, effectively and profitably.”
On pricing, Tim dismissed the notion
that raising labour rates is a major risk.
“People get fixated on the hourly rate, but
it’s the value that matters. If you can show
what you’re doing and why it’s worth it,
then small increases make sense.
“There’s no point booking a
vehicle in if the outcome is
going to be bad,” Tim told a
packed audience of garage
owners and technicians.
“Sometimes the right answer
is saying no, unless you can
offer a clear solution.”
A £10 per hour rise might only mean £20
extra on a two-hour job but if it supports
better equipment, better training
and better results, then it’s a win for
everyone.”
Ultimately, Tim urged fellow workshop
owners to invest, whether that’s in
training, tooling, or simply time. “You
can’t afford not to. The hidden costs
of inefficiency, comebacks and poor
communication are far greater than any
upfront investment.”
For Tim, the goal is clear: first-time fix,
lasting value, and a confident, capable
workforce. “The customer might not
always leave a review,” he concluded, “but
if they come back, if they trust you, that’s
the true test of effectiveness.”
Oldfields Automotive Consulting helps
garages tackle exactly these challenges. It
offers hands-on support to independent
workshops, focusing on improving
operational efficiency, customer
experience and long-term profitability.
Working closely with garage owners,
Tim carries out on-site reviews,
analyses existing processes, and delivers
actionable strategies rooted in real-world
experience. His aim is to equip garages
with the tools, structure and confidence
they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving
industry.

Town & Country
Covers launches
universal seat
covers for
commercial
vehicles!
PRODUCTS
Leading manufacturer of protective seat
covers, Town & Country Covers, has revealed
its newest product, a fully redesigned universal
seat cover to fit modern truck seats.
Designed to fit many vehicles, the new universal cover
(UN8414) from Town & Country Covers provides an ideal
option for commercial vehicle (CV) drivers, as well as fleet
managers.
The covers are made from a 600-denier polyester with
a waterproof polyurethane backing and the company uses
overlocked seams for extra strength and durability. The
covers are designed in the UK, this means the company has
total control over the design and manufacturing process.
As would be expected from a company with such
pedigree, Town & Country Covers prides itself on sourcing
high quality materials for all its products. Its signature
polyester blend is the perfect balance of style, comfort, and
toughness, which is guaranteed to add years to the life of any
seat and this can naturally be expected in this new product.
James Newman, Director at Town & Country Covers,
commented: “With the evolution of CV seats changing in
recent years to maximise safety and comfort for the driver,
we have also had to evolve our seat cover designs. We had
identified a number of seats where our existing covers didn’t
do as good a job as we would want. These were mostly the
high backed seats found in Volvo and Scania trucks.”
“The challenge with a universal seat is cover is to make
it fit a wide range of applications while also fitting securely
without leaving too much room for the cover to be baggy.
We have incorporated a lot of adjustment in this cover so
it will fit snug, as well as having the option for an integrated
seatbelt on either side so it can fit both driver and passenger
seats.”
“We have a dedicated in-house design team that work
tirelessly to ensure the fit of each seat cover is as good as
it can be, so we’re confident this is going to be a popular
product for CV owners.”

in Ben’s Big
Breakfast 2025
Ben is inviting everyone in the automotive industry to take part in
Ben’s Big Breakfast in October, because a cuppa and a chat can
change a life.
Ben’s Big Breakfast is now in its fifth year and, last year, raised
an incredible £25,000. This year, automotive industry people
are invited to host their own breakfast anytime during the week
of 6th to 12th October and encourage colleagues, customers,
friends and family to bring, bake, or buy a spread and donate to
support Ben’s vital work.
With 44% of automotive people struggling with anxiety, 33%
experiencing depression, and 38% experiencing poor work-life
balance , Ben’s Big Breakfast offers a chance to catch up over a
cuppa, take time out, and be there for each other. This popular
food-fuelled event encourages Ben’s automotive family to bond
over breakfast any day during the week of World Mental Health
Day on 10th October.
So go on, grab a slice of the action.
Sign up for free at www.ben.org.uk/bigbreakfast
By signing up, participants will receive a Ben’s Big Breakfast
fundraising kit, packed with everything needed to make each
event a success.
With more people turning to Ben for support than ever before,
now is the time to get involved, get fundraising, and help make a
life-changing difference to those who are struggling or in crisis.
Matt Wigginton, Director of Growth & Development at Ben,
said: “Our Big Breakfast is a simple, fun way to raise funds and
a perfect excuse to bring your team together. Breakfast really
is the best meal of the day, and sharing it with others can spark
meaningful conversations. A quick chat over a coffee could
be exactly what someone needs. Right now, many people are
suffering in silence, thinking they’ve got no-one to turn to. That’s
why connection matters, for our mental health.
“By getting involved, you’re not just having fun, you’re giving
back to the industry charity that supports our automotive family.
Whether you’re flipping pancakes, selling sausage sarnies, or
laying out a pastry platter, every breakfast counts. Rally your
team, encourage multiple sites to join in, and make it something
special. It’s time to toast your team and get a taste of something
truly meaningful.”
When any member of our automotive family is struggling or in
crisis, we all rally to support them.

Autowave launches step-by-step tutorials:
Peugeot Boxer 2023 transponder clone first up!
In a new series of written
step-by-step guides,
Autowave is delighted to
support workshop technicians
and locksmiths with clear,
detailed instructions on
how to get the most from
their replacement key and
programming equipment.
Manual key
From individual vehicle transponder
cloning to advanced diagnostics, key
coding and remote programming,
this content is an invaluable resource for
professionals looking to save time, reduce
errors, tackle specific vehicles and expand
their capabilities with confidence.
To start the series, Autowave’s
Ravi Kotecha explains how to clone a
transponder on a Peugeot Boxer 2023.
You’ll need the following:
Original working key
SIP22 blank key (ready for cutting)
Xhorse Superchip (XT27)
Xhorse Key Tool Max Pro
Wi-Fi connection (for online calculation)
Step one: Verify the original key
works
Insert the original key into the ignition and
start the vehicle to confirm it functions
correctly.
Step two: Check clonability
On the Key Tool Max Pro device, navigate
to the main screen and choose the
‘Transponder Clone’ option. Insert the
original key into the transponder coil of
the device and tap ‘Read Transponder’.
This will identify the chip type; in this
case, it will read as an ‘ID46 transponder’.
The system will confirm if the chip is
cloneable; if it shows ‘Clone Status:
Cloneable’, proceed by tapping ‘Clone’.
Step three: Begin cloning process
Follow the cloning instructions as
prompted: confirm that you’re using the
original key and then place the device’s
antenna near the ignition coil to begin
data collection. After a few seconds,
the screen will display ‘Data Acquisition
Complete’. You’ll then be asked to place
the original key back into the transponder
coil for further verification. Once the
screen reads ‘Key Password Success’,
remove the original key.
Step four: Insert and write
to Superchip
At this point, insert your Xhorse
Superchip into the Key Tool Max Pro. It will
automatically detect the chip and begin
writing the data. After a few moments,
you should see ‘Copy Successfully’
appear on the screen, confirming that the
transponder has been cloned.
Step five: Confirm cloning success
To verify, use the Key Tool Max Pro to read
the transponder again. The ID number on
the cloned chip should match the original
key; in this instance, it ended with ‘CO20’.
Once confirmed, insert the chip into the
housing of the newly cut SIP22 key.
Step six: On-vehicle test
To check the success of the cloning, try
starting the vehicle with the newly cut key
– without the chip inserted. The vehicle
will crank but not start. Insert the chip
and try again; this time, the vehicle should
start immediately, proving that the clone
was successful.
Outcome
In just a few minutes, you’ve cloned a
2023 Peugeot Boxer key using the Xhorse
Key Tool Max Pro and a Xhorse Superchip.
More written step-by-step guides
will become available over the coming
weeks – available on Autowave’s website
and distributed to the trade media.

Bookmygarage launches Smart
& Cosmetic Repairs Service
l BookMyGarage adds SMART &
cosmetic repairs to its services
l It follows intensive testing to
create simple-to-use process
for customers to cite damage
area for reliable online
estimates
l SMART & cosmetic
repairs services expand the
BookMyGarage portfolio even
further
BookMyGarage has introduced SMART &
cosmetic repair services to fill a gap in the
market and further boost the annual £93
million revenue it generates for garage
partners on its comparison and booking
platform.
In addition to capturing MOT and service
work for the independent and franchised
sector, its new SMART & cosmetic repair
services have been launched in response
to increased demand from motorists and
following intensive testing to develop a
simple online estimate process.
SMART & cosmetic repair providers
can benefit from a specific focus in the
BookMyGarage portfolio designed to boost
retail work from consumers looking to rectify
small scratches and dents and damaged
paintwork as well as more substantial
damage.
Franchised workshops and independent
garages which offer SMART & cosmetic
repairs together with bodyshops and mobile
cosmetic repairers can all take advantage of
the new service.
Following several months of intensive
and varied testing with trusted partners,
BookMyGarage developers created a
process that consumers have found simple
to use whilst gathering enough information
to provide an estimate online.
Customers can specifically cite the
area on the car where work is required
together with the functionality to upload
photos of the damage to be rectified.
Once the booking is made, the repairer
contacts the customer directly to triage and
provide a more accurate quote following an
assessment of the images.
Jessica Potts, chief marketing officer
at BookMyGarage, said: “Increasingly, our
data shows that consumers are largely very
specific about the aftercare services they
require for their vehicles. Our platform has
evolved to match these changing consumer
behaviours and to ensure we are in the best
place to drive even more incremental retail
custom to our partners.
“However, due to the specific nature
of work required, it has been notoriously
difficult to migrate cosmetic & SMART repair
services to the online booking space. We
have worked tirelessly with some of our
partners to develop a process to facilitate
this on our platform and can now drive
incremental business to SMART & cosmetic
repairers. Consumers are provided with a
simple online estimate tool and can compare
options in the local area. To provide
consumers with the choice they expect and
the widest availability, we are also looking
to onboard additional repairers to meet
expected demand.”
The platform operates in the same way as
it does for garage partners, the franchised
network and mobile mechanics whereby
operators receive actual bookings and only
pay the fee once the appointment has taken
place. The customer pays the SMART repair
provider direct for the total value of the
work and any additional work is arranged
between the business and the customer.
The BookMyGarage package has been
specifically designed for repairers who want
to gain brand exposure for their business
locally and an instant stream of bookings.
BookMyGarage invests its own marketing
funds to drive traffic to its platform from
those drivers specifically searching for
cosmetic repair work.
As the UK’s leading comparison site
for MOTs and servicing, more than 20
million drivers have compared garages
on the BookMyGarage platform to book
vehicle aftercare services generating more
than £93 million in the last 12 months for
its independent garage and franchised
dealership users. With complete control
over availability, lead times and pricing,
BookMyGarage offers guaranteed results

Safety and comfort for all
BILSTEIN B6
also for electric cars
and hybrid vehicles
Even if the mobility transition is only
making slow progress, some of the
electric models have already covered
many tens of thousands of miles in the
meantime. E.g. Tesla’s Model 3 as well as BYD’s
Seal and may Volkswagen ID cars are used
by more and more drivers. Especially for the
daily commute to work electric cars are a
perfect fit. But demanding drivers tend to
dislike the driving behaviour of those models.
BILSTEIN as the suspension specialists has
the solution: With the BILSTEIN B6, drivers can
improve the driving characteristics of their
electric vehicle with only a shock absorber
exchange. This upgrade offers optimum grip
and enhanced lane stability in day to day and
extreme situations. It features perceivably
enhanced safety and performance without
additional spring exchange as well as high
traction and more precise handling thanks to
BILSTEIN gas-pressure technology.
Electric and hybrid vehicles place
completely new demands on springs and
shock absorbers and therefore on the
suspension. Torque, weight and noise are the
factors that the specialists at BILSTEIN are
focusing on when it comes to OE replacement
for electric and hybrid vehicles. Most of these
cars have a significantly higher torque than
comparable ones with combustion engines
and exceed their weight by an average of 300
to 450 kilograms. As a result, all components
of the suspension are subject to greater wear,
which is reflected not only in poorer driving
behaviour, but also in noise behaviour – an
important comfort criterion, especially for
electric vehicles.
It is therefore important for the
developers at BILSTEIN to design OE
replacement dampers for the B6 series
upgrade for particularly demanding and
performance-oriented customers to meet
these requirements. A lot of details need to
be considered in this regard:
● The shock absorber’s rubber-metal
connections to the body and to the axle are
selected to offer optimum noise insulation,
but still to withstand the high weight – for
many miles and years.
● The springs in EVs are designed for the
higher vehicle weight and therefore have a
different vibration behaviour. The BILSTEIN
OE and OE replacement shock absorbers
are specially adjusted to these spring
properties due to their firmer characteristic
settings.
● Despite the more stable design, the
individual components and seals are
constructed in such a way that they do not
cause any audible noise even in the long
term – a BILSTEIN quality feature that pays
off particularly when applied in electric
models.
Optimum OE replacement,
quickly available
BILSTEIN’s close partnership with many
vehicle manufacturers over decades is
particularly helpful. In this way, the BILSTEIN
engineers are involved in the development
project at such an early stage that optimum
solutions can be found from the outset.
And very importantly: As BILSTEIN features
the worldwide largest product range for
EVs, workshops can rely on the spare part
availability.
BILSTEIN remains true to its mission
of providing the aftermarket with OE
replacement products at new-car level very
quickly – regardless of the type of drive.
Main image: Due to its improved
damping performance, the BILSTEIN B6
improves the handling of heavy BEVs
The rear axle guides the vehicle and is
therefore particularly dependent on
pefect damping for heavy BEVs.

Dramatic Rise in ADAS Calibrations Drives Major
Investment at Cooper Barnes Automotive
Award-winning
repairer expands
with new 5,000sqft
facility and brings
ADAS work in-house
with help from A1
ADAS Group
Cooper Barnes Automotive has
reported a sharp increase in the
number of vehicles requiring ADAS
calibration, prompting the creation of
a dedicated 5,000sqft calibration and
mechanical workshop at its expanded
Cambridge site.
The award-winning business, which
recently relocated and doubled in size, now
employs 17 staff and continues to grow in
response to fast-moving vehicle technology
and rising demand for in-house calibration.
“Every other car we see now needs some
form of calibration. That simply wasn’t
the case 12 months ago,” said managing
director Matt Cooper. “We’ve been in this
industry for 40 years. While we’ve always
known autonomy was coming, the speed at
which it’s landed has been staggering.”
Until recently, all calibration and
coding work was handled on-site by
mobile technicians from A1 ADAS Group, a
relationship Cooper describes as faultless.
“We’re seeing so many ADAS-equipped
vehicles that it reached a point where I
was seeing more of A1’s team than my own.
That’s when we knew it was time to bring it
in-house,” he said.
Rather than source equipment from
multiple suppliers, Cooper Barnes turned
to A1 to specify, supply, and support the full
setup. Working closely with A1’s Iain Molloy
and Matt Hume, the business invested
in the Autel IA900WA system, which
combines ADAS calibration with four-wheel
alignment functionality. It also upgraded
its existing diagnostic tablet to the MS909
and purchased all the necessary targets,
boards, and mats to cover a wide range of
vehicle makes.
“A1 helped us choose the right system
for our space and volume, advised us on
training routes for the ADAS qualifications,
and made sure we’ll see a return on
investment as soon as possible,” said
Cooper.
For A1, the partnership is an example of
how repairers can evolve with confidence
when supported by the right people.
“ADAS is a safety system, potentially a
lifesaving one,” said Iain Molloy, managing
director of A1 ADAS Group. “Working on it
isn’t simply about putting a light out on the
dash.
“Workshops like Cooper Barnes
understand how critical it is that
calibrations are carried out correctly.
Our role is to help them integrate that
service; not just by selling equipment, but
by offering long-term support, technical
expertise and solutions that deliver value.”
The new facility sits alongside Cooper
Barnes’ existing 13,500sqft bodyshop and
is designed to streamline workflow, reduce
vehicle movement and keep safety-critical
calibrations under one roof.
With three new technicians joining the
team in recent months, the business is wellpositioned
to increase throughput while
maintaining quality.
“I can’t overstate how valuable A1’s
support is,” Cooper added. “They’re not
just box shifters; they genuinely want to
help you do the job right. That’s what makes
them a true ADAS partner.”

BENSCHALLENGE
Ben’s new Industry Leader Challenge returns
for toughest expedition yet:
The Glacier, Iceland 2026
Automotive industry charity, Ben,
is revealing next year’s Industry
Leader Challenge (ILC), which will
see participants tackle the most chilling
challenge yet: The Glacier in Iceland from
18th to 27th March 2026.
Taking place in the icy wilderness of
Iceland’s Langjökull ice cap, this extreme
expedition will see 24 of the automotive
industry’s boldest leaders ski-trekking
through sub-zero temperatures, dramatic
terrain, and battling isolation in the name
of challenge and charity. Up to 12 teams
of two will need to raise a minimum of
£25,000 per team for Ben.
The Glacier continues ILC’s tradition of
taking a group of senior leaders far beyond
their comfort zones. The challenge lasts
10 days in total and challengers will spend
eight of these on the ice cap, journeying
together through one of the most remote
environments on Earth. They will face:
l Up to nine hours of ski-trekking
each day
l Ski-trekking to 1,450m above sea level
l Temperatures as low as -25°C overnight
l Zero contact with the outside world
l Seven nights of camping in the freezing
wilderness.
Participants will wake up early each day
to melt snow for water, haul gear across
snowfields, face biting winds and navigate
vast, shifting glaciers.
So far, teams from LKQ Euro Car Parts
and Hella have signed up to take part and
this will be the third ILC that Spencer
Grinham, Sales Director at Hella, has taken

Matt Wigginton, Director of Growth &
Development, said: “This may just be our
most epic (and coolest) challenge yet! As
with all ILC events, the main focus is on
raising vital funds to support automotive
industry people who are facing challenges
that no-one should ever have to tackle
alone.
“If you’re a leader in the automotive
industry and you’ve ever been curious
about what lies beyond your limits, this
is your chance. The Glacier will be a
challenge of endurance and personal
growth, while raising money to support
members of our automotive family who
are struggling or in crisis. Now more than
ever, automotive people need Ben – and
we need you and your support. If you’re
up for this once-in-a-lifetime challenge,
then get in touch with me today!”
Register interest today
There are limited spaces available so, for
more information about the event, or to
register your interest, please contact Matt
Wigginton: matt.wigginton@ben.org.uk.
To date, the ILC has raised over
£1.02million, and the impact continues to
grow with every new expedition. The ILC is
an epic personal challenge taken on each
year by an automotive industry leader (or
leaders) to fundraise for Ben. Previous
ILC adventures have included swimming
across the English Channel, skydiving,
cycling down the Thames, climbing Mount
Kilimanjaro and trekking the Sahara
Desert. The ILC requires extraordinary
personal endeavour that tests the
challenger(s) either mentally or physically
- or both.
When any member of our automotive
family is struggling or in crisis, we all rally
to support them.

Supertracker
unveils space
saving, tablet
controlled
CCD aligner at
Automechanika
Introducing the
next-generation
CCD system.
Straightset have introduce the STR130
TC and STR420 TC, a 6 and 8 sensor
CCD wheel alignment system controlled
via a WindowsTab, stored on a sleek
manoeuvrable storage solution.
Keeping pace with
the modern workshop
Since acquiring Supertracker in 2022,
Straightset; the UK’s leading garage
equipment specialist, has driven forward
innovation across its wheel alignment
range. From pioneering the UK’s first green
laser alignment system to now evolving
its popular CCD system, the company
continues to respond to evolving workshop
needs.
“This launch is all about listening to
our customers and delivering a smarter,
faster and more flexible alignment solution
tailored for the modern workshop,” said
Andrew Bates, Managing Director of
Straightset.
“By reducing the footprint of the system
and integrating a handheld tablet for
readings right at the vehicle, we’re offering
a space-saving and convenient option,
without compromising on accuracy or
performance.”
Key product benefits include:
l Robust WindowsTab tablet with
magnetic case: Securely mounts to lifts for
instant data access under the vehicle.
l Compact, cabinet-free design: Reduces
workshop floor footprint while improving
mobility.
l Available with 6 or 8 sensor technology:
Ensures precise, reliable alignment for a
wide range of vehicles.
l New, larger hangers: Capable of
handling rim sizes up to 27” as standard.
l Signature Supertracker ‘hang on’
system: Delivers safe, effective alignment
with no risk of rim damage.
Official Launch at Automechanika
2025
The STR130 TC and STR420 TC was officially
launched at Automechanika Birmingham,
with live demonstrations and exclusive
pre-order opportunities on the Straightset
stand.
“CCD equipment offers a straight
forward solution to wheel alignment
that includes vehicle database, simple
Bluetooth connectivity and before and
after customer printouts. However,
traditionally, these popular systems are
housed in a cabinet, which takes up
valuable floor space due to the static PCs
and printers,” added Andrew.
“Our innovation, backed by strategic
investment in new product development,
delivers space saving, convenient
solution for modern workshops,
without compromising on precision or
performance.”

TRAINING
AUTOTECH
TRAINING
LAUNCHES
NEW LICENSED
EV TYRE
TECHNICIAN
COURSE
Autotech Training has become the first training provider in Great Britain to roll out the
National Tyre Distributors Association’s (NTDA) Licensed Electric Vehicle Tyre Technician
(LEVTT) programme - specialist training designed to help tyre technicians develop the
skills needed to safely replace and repair tyres on electric and hybrid vehicles.
The course was officially launched this
week at Automechanika, marking a
significant milestone for Autotech
Training as it continues to lead the way in
specialist EV training within the automotive
sector.
As of late April 2025, there were over
1.5 million electric cars on UK roads,
representing almost 5% of the country’s
34 million vehicles. This number has more
than tripled since 2021, and as the move
towards electric vehicles accelerates,
it’s vital that technicians understand the
unique demands these vehicles place on
tyres and why fitting the correct tyres is so
important for safety and performance.
Tyres may be seen as a basic part of a
vehicle, but they are critical to keeping
drivers safe. As vehicles have become
heavier and more advanced, tyre
technology has changed to keep up. This is
especially true for electric vehicles, which
are often 20 to 30% heavier than petrol or
diesel cars because of their large batterie.
The added weight and instant torque of
electric vehicles place significantly greater
stress on tyres, leading to faster wear and
a higher risk of breakdowns.
In fact, electric vehicles are estimated
to be twice as likely to experience tyre
or wheel-related failures compared to
traditional petrol or diesel vehicles.
Fitting the wrong type of tyre to an
electric vehicle can lead to quicker
wear, more road noise, reduced battery
range, and, most seriously, the risk of
tyre failure while driving. To tackle these
challenges, tyre manufacturers have
developed special tyres designed to
handle the extra weight and instant torque
of electric vehicles. However, without the
right training, technicians may not know
the differences between these tyres or
understand the risks of fitting the wrong
ones.
There’s also a serious safety aspect that
cannot be overlooked. Electric and hybrid
vehicles use high-voltage systems - often
over 400 volts - that can be extremely
dangerous if handled incorrectly.
Tyre technicians working around these
vehicles must understand the risks
associated with high-voltage systems and
know how to work safely. This includes
following strict safety practices such as
using non-conductive tools and wearing
insulated gloves to reduce the risk of
electric shock or serious injury.
The LEVTT course has been created
specifically for tyre technicians who
regularly work on electric and hybrid
vehicles and want to be fully trained
and assessed as competent. The course
meets the standards set by the Institute
of the Motor Industry (IMI) through the
Level 1 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle
Awareness.
As part of the training, technicians learn
about the different types of electric and
hybrid vehicles, the hazards linked to their
high-voltage electrical systems, and how
to work safely around them, including safe
charging procedures.
Autotech Training has been a pioneer in
EV training and continues to support the
industry by providing specialist courses
that help technicians adapt to a fastchanging
automotive world.
Alistair McCrindle, Operations Director,
Autotech Training commented: “With
electric vehicles becoming more common,
this type of training is no longer optional
- it’s essential for technician safety and
customer protection. The LEVTT course
provides the vital knowledge technicians
need to stay safe and confident when
working around these vehicles.”

a future career in the industry could look
like. We are committed to helping tackle
the skills shortage in our industry, and
demonstrating the breadth of rewarding
career opportunities on offer is essential
to that.”
