67th Annual Art Fair on the Square
On behalf of MMoCA’s Board of Trustees and staff,
welcome to the 67th annual Art Fair on the Square! We’re
so glad you’re here. This event is not only one of Madison’s
most cherished summer traditions—it’s also our largest
fundraiser of the year, and your presence helps make
everything we do at the Museum possible.
Art Fair on the Square is unique in that every artist keeps
100% of their profits, so your support goes directly to the
creatives who bring this event to life. This year, we’re
introducing some exciting additions: a new beer and wine
garden in partnership with Working Draft Beer Company
and Square Wine Co., an after-hours Muse event on Saturday
night, music events all weekend long on the Isthmus Stage,
intergenerational art-making activities at the Incredible Bank
Kids’ Area, and the return of our Emerge Block for rising
artists. You’ll also find sponsor booths and a gift map
designed for visitors shopping on a budget.
Whether you’ve come for the art, the music, or the joy of
being in community, thank you. Your participation is what

ABOUT MMoCA
The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is always
admission-free. Its vision is to be an organization that fosters
the exchange of ideas and creates experiences that will
inspire a wide audience; be a nexus for the work of emerging
and established regional, national, and international artists;
serve as a catalyst for the continued development of a
vigorous community of artists; and provide a forum that will
encourage people to be challenged by, reflect on, and make
connections between art and the world around them.

Featured Artist for the 2025 Art Fair
on the Square. The featured artwork,
Yellow on Blue, is an acrylic and
watercolor painting on paper.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I am obsessed with design, negative
shape making, and the ruggedness of
the North. These obsessions led me to
study Canadian painters, most notably
Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven,
who worked primarily in the early 1900s.
The illustrative style is personally
relatable to me. Their career paths
evolved from graphic designers to
illustrators to painters. This has been my
path as well.
Finding rhythm in the landscape has
become a hallmark of my work. Rhythm
to me is connecting highlight shapes
with linked shadow shapes in an
interesting way that creates movement
and pathways for the eye.
My technique uniquely combines
opaque acrylic with transparent
watercolor that stylizes the landscape
and is influenced by printmakers and
batik artists. Their approach to creating
negative shapes is similar to how I
construct and distill my scenes.
Painting on location and in the studio
are different experiences and bring
different perspectives to my work. Over
the years, I’ve leaned toward studio work
where I can more easily design and
abstract the scene, and this has led to
my distinctive style.

MMoCA is pleased to welcome the
2025 Art Fair on the Square Jurors
JANE FASSE
Jane Fasse is a painter and Senior Adjunct Instructor in the Art Department at
Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. She holds an MFA from the University
of Wisconsin–Madison and specializes in oil painting on MDF, while also working
in printmaking, encaustics, drawing, and digital media. Fasse has taught at MATC
and UW–Extension, served as Assistant Manager and Book Buyer at the Madison
Art Center (now MMoCA), and leads MMoCA’s popular “Drink and Draw” sessions.
She has juried for Wisconsin Visual Arts, the Wisconsin Watercolor Society, and
the Spring Green Arts Festival.
COURTNEY SCANLAN
Courtney Scanlan is a dedicated arts administration professional, born and raised
just south of Madison. Having worked in fine craft galleries across the Midwest,
and currently with Artful Home, she is always on the lookout for new engagement
opportunities between fine craft artists and art lovers. She also enjoys dragging
her husband on every pottery tour within driving distance.
DAVID WELLS
David Wells is known for his work as Gallery Director at Edgewood College
Gallery, GLEAM: Art in a New Light at Olbrich Botanical Gardens, and the Art on
the Rooftop exhibitions at Monona Terrace Convention Center. He received the
2024 Wisconsin Visual Art Achievement Award for Arts Advocacy, recognizing his
extensive contributions as a curator, his work as a juror, and for creating Curators
Conversations Wisconsin. A former Director of the UW-Madison Design Gallery
and the Edenfred Arts Residency, Wells holds an MFA in Installation Sculpture
from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, CA, and a BA in Cultural
Analysis from UW-Green Bay.
