Q: Your transition from aerospace engineering
to eyewear design is remarkable.
How do principles of aeronautical precision
(like those used in satellite systems)
manifest in your eyewear construction,
particularly in elements like hinge tension
or material tolerances?
It might seem like a leap from aerospace
and automotive design to eyewear, but in
truth, the disciplines share a similar obsession
with perfection.
In aerospace and automotive, there is
zero room for error. Every fraction of a millimeter
matters. You’re designing for extreme
conditions: pressure, velocity, vibration. That
mindset never left me. It taught me to respect
the unseen. There are tolerances that
aren’t visible to the eye, but they determine
whether something feels right, functions
flawlessly, and endures.
In eyewear, that precision becomes intimate.
The tension of a hinge must offer resistance
without strain. The balance across
the bridge must hold, feather-light, without
ever slipping. Even the thickness of the acetate
or the plating depth of the gold all of it is
calculated and considered.
I approach each piece as a micro-engineered
object. But instead of orbiting the
Earth, it rests on the face. It frames identity,
not data. That’s the poetry of it. Technical
integrity, elevated to something expressive
and human.
Q: You describe eyewear as “jewelry for
the face,” with pieces becoming heirlooms.
Could you share the story behind
one custom commission that embodies
this philosophy, including how you selected
materials like Lightning Ridge opals?
Sure, there was one commission I’ll never
forget, it was for a client who had recently
lost her father. He’d been a collector of rare
minerals and antique objects, and she wanted
a piece that felt both like a kind of armour
and also a remembrance.
We began with the silhouette, which was
bold and architectural, but elegant. Something
with a strong presence. For the temples,
I sourced two Lightning Ridge black
opals that mirrored each other closely, like
twin galaxies. Their fire was subdued but
deep, like her emotion held just below the
surface. She told me they reminded her of
his eyes.
The frame was constructed in brushed
Japanese titanium, chosen for its strength
and lightness. Titanium doesn’t shout, it
just holds. Every element was symbolic:
gold-plated hinges to reflect continuity,
hand-engraved inner temples with a phrase
he used to say to her as a child. Even the
packaging was custom, a velvet case lined
with the fabric of one of his old jackets, which
we thought was a really thoughtful touch.
These made her feel close to him, still
connected. It wasn’t just a frame. It was a
vessel for memory. And that, to me, is what
heirloom design is about. It’s not just beauty,
but soul. Something made with such intention
that it outlives fashion, and maybe even
the original wearer.
Q:Vintage Eyewear balances archival
pieces (1950s–1990s) with new designs.
What specific vintage frame in your collection
most profoundly influenced your
24k gold-plated “VE Designs,” and why?
There’s one piece in my collection that continues
to delight me; it’s an original Tiffany
frame from the late 1980s.
It’s not loud, in fact, it’s quietly commanding.
It’s a sculptural gold rim, understated
yet resoundingly regal. What captivated me
wasn’t just its beauty, but its balance. Every
proportion, every weight, every transition between
materials felt intentional. It didn’t ask
for attention because it already instantly had
it.
The craftsmanship rivaled fine jewelry, but
it was never ornamental for its sake. It was
precise. That frame taught me restraint and
how luxury could be both bold and elegant.
Expressive without needing to be excessive.
When I began developing the first 24k
gold-plated Vintage Eyewear Designs line,
that Tiffany piece sat beside me often. I
wasn’t trying to replicate it; I wouldn’t dare.
But I wanted to capture its spirit. It’s calm
authority and exquisite tension between
strength and refinement.
It reminded me (and still does) that a
frame, similar to a poem or a song, doesn’t
need many words to move you, just the right
ones. This piece was made during the time
when things were still handcrafted by master
artisans in Italy, so its quality is unquestionable.

Q: You’ve criticized mass-produced eyewear
as “soulless.” Beyond limited quantities,
how does your Japanese/Korean
manufacturing process actively resist industrial
shortcuts that compromise quality?
Mass production, by its nature, seeks efficiency.
And while there’s nothing wrong with
scale, what often gets lost is soul. That is, the
nuance, the touch, the reverence for the object
itself. It’s just ‘make as many as possible
and get them sold!’
In our workshops in Japan and Korea, everything
is done with intention. The acetate
is cured slowly and not rushed, which gives
it a richer depth and greater durability. Metalwork
is hand-finished, not stamped out in
seconds. Each hinge is calibrated manually,
and each lens groove is cut with millimetric
precision. And maybe most importantly,
there are no conveyor belts, only human
hands.
We work with master artisans who’ve
spent decades refining their craft. They
don’t just assemble; they understand why
something is done in a certain way. They
know why a frame needs a certain tension,
how the weight must be distributed to feel
effortless on the face, and when a design is
complete. Not because a clock says it’s due,
but because their eye agrees.
This kind of production isn’t scalable in the
traditional sense, and I don’t want it to be.
Because what we’re creating isn’t just eyewear,
it’s a statement against disposability.
A return to reverence. That’s what’s missing
now in fashion and across several industries
to a degree. Intentional, hand-crafted goods
are a quiet rebellion via beautiful, pure quality
and care.

Q: As someone who bridges technical
design and wearable art, how do you respond
to the notion that luxury accessories
must prioritize either aesthetics or
function? Could your medical instrument
design experience inform future frames?
I’ve never accepted the idea that we must
choose between beauty and function. To
me, that’s a bit of a false divide. In my early
years designing medical instruments, I
learned something profound: the most functional
tools must also be the most refined. A
surgical instrument, for example, must feel
like an extension of the hand. There is grace
in its efficiency, and even a kind of elegance
in its silence. That stayed with me.
Luxury at its best should feel the same.
It should be effortless, precise, and deeply
considered. When you place a frame on
your face, it should disappear in weight, but
heighten in presence. That’s the sweet spot.
When form serves function, beauty emerges
naturally from that alignment.
So yes, the discipline of medical design
still informs everything I do. And in the future,
I believe it could go even further. I have
ideas for exploring ergonomic technologies,
pressure-free contact points, and subtle
sensory adaptations. It’s all embedded within
frames that still feel sculptural and sensual.
Because real luxury shouldn’t make you
choose. It simply feels right. Whether on your
face, in your hands, or just somewhere quiet
within you.
