Working with battery energy storage systems (BESS) can pose many
dangers, but thermal imaging can help prevent battery failures,
accelerate new battery development, and enable safer inspections.

Systems (BESS) are a key to

Whether the BESS is in place to
ensure power grid stability or is
deployed on a smaller scale to
help businesses store solar power
from their own panels, maintaining
their viability requires regular
inspections and repairs.
Maintaining safe conditions in and around BESS sites is
important yet challenging due to potential temperature
fluctuations reaching critical levels and the health risks
associated with physically contacting materials within
the battery cells. Similar risks are present throughout
the manufacturing process, transportation, and initial
development stages.

Fixed-mount thermal cameras can
be stationed at storage facilities or
along production lines to monitor
batteries for rising temperatures.
Many of these kinds of thermal
sensors are loaded with on-theedge
analysis software, so they can
sense temperature changes and
send alarm information directly into an industrial PLC for
data logging and even automatically trigger suppression
systems, should temperatures rise beyond a user-defined
threshold.

Destructive testing for research and development
The temperature of a failing battery can instantly rise
from a normal condition to an explosive combustion. Highspeed
thermal imaging is on the best ways for capturing
data the moment it happens.
The Battery Innovation Centre (BIC) in Newberry, Indiana
frequently relies on FLIR high-speed thermal imaging
cameras during nail penetration tests, which simulates a
short circuit condition to induce combustion. Before adding
high-speed thermal to their testing, BIC researchers
attached dozens of thermocouples at a time to measure
a battery’s temperature during testing. This provided only
limited data and consumed significant time when setting
up each test.
The solution is to perform inspections using an infrared
camera. Infrared cameras offer a non-contact, reliable
solution for monitoring thermal patterns and identifying
issues at every stage of a battery system’s lifecycle.
Whether used for handheld inspections and spot checks or
integrated into a battery production line, thermal cameras
provide a safe and effective way to detect small heatrelated
faults before they escalate into major problems.
So, what are some of the risks for working with BESS?
Let’s review some key battery inspection applications and
examine how thermal imaging contributes to early fault
identification, fire prevention, data-driven insights, and
improved safety measures.
Thermal runaway
Industries working with battery systems must take
precaution to prevent thermal runaway, a dangerous chain
reaction in which rising temperatures spread from one
battery cell to another, potentially leading to fires and the
release of harmful gases.
During battery production, the process can begin when
electrical connections are made and current begins
flowing between components, causing a continuous rise
in temperature. As the battery heats up, the system
voltage decreases resulting in increased current, further
accelerating the temperature rise. If left undetected,
thermal runaway can result in damaged batteries, product
failures, and even facility fires.

Poor welding
Large BESS battery packs are typically assembled from
individual cells, which are welded together to form larger
modules, and then placed inside larger battery packs.
Defective welds can result in resistance issues, diminished
output, and shorter lifespans.
Thermal imaging offers a reliable method for identifying
poor welds, as areas with higher resistance exhibit
noticeable temperature variations under electrical load,
signalling potential defects.
Cell leakage
Cell leakage can happen at any
point in the manufacturing process.
Corrosive materials from the battery
are almost invisible to the human
eye and can both damage the skin
and ruin the product.
When the seal of a battery cell is
compromised, the liquid electrolyte
can leak into the outer layers,
creating a detectable temperature
variation. Thermal imaging cameras
can swiftly identify these minute leaks within seconds,
without requiring direct contact with the cells.

Thermal imaging allows BIC to monitor and record rapid
temperature changes across the entire battery surface
then analyze the entire event frame-by-frame for a deeper
understand of a cells behavior when damaged. “When we
do a test, we want to collect as much data as possible,”
explains Ashley Gordon, Director of Programs at BIC. “We
want to have confidence that our data is accurate.”
Not only were researchers able to monitor the entire
battery surface, but they could also more accurately
evaluate the materials being expelled during tests.
Understanding how a battery short-circuits and how
the material will ignite enables researchers to better
understand the potential danger and how to best mitigate
damage should it reach failure.
Inspecting and maintaining BESS
Battery Energy Storage Systems are susceptible to
thermal runaway, which can not
only lead to fires that are difficult
to extinguish but can also release
hazardous gases that pose health
risks to nearby communities and
can potentially cause environmental
damage through soil and water
contamination. In the worst-case
scenarios, BESS fires can lead to
property damage and evacuations.
Automated thermal imaging
cameras are the go-to solution for
preventing disaster at BESS sites.
While traditional flame detectors can
be used as a preventative measure, they fail in the early
stages of a fire detection due to their reliance on visible
flames or smoke which may not be immediately present.
Thermal imaging is significantly
more reliable as it can trigger alarms
and suppression systems from small
rises in temperature before anything
reaches combustion.

Nutrient management simplified
In this issue of Sustainability Today, we are pleased
to feature Navigate Eco Solutions Ltd as our
Nutrient Management Company of the Month
Established in 2021, Navigate Eco
Solutions Ltd (NESL) is a joint venture
business between Compass Agronomy
Ltd and Orbital Software Solutions Ltd, with
Alli Arden providing farm advice and Ian
Cocks leading software development.
Based in the Northwest of the UK, near
Chester, NESL has produced NavigatePro, a simple
digital solution for livestock and arable producers
who wish to improve the efficiency of their
production, optimise key inputs, and move towards
more sustainable management practices.
Used by businesses and independent advisors
across England and Wales, NavigatePro has a
unique integrated approach, combining nutrient
planning requirements with delivery of vital
insights into maximising enterprise productivity.
Aimed at growers and advisors alike, NavigatePro
simplifies the complex management of cropland
and natural resources by streamlining inorganic
and organic inputs, helping match fertiliser
products to crop needs.
The software also produces all the compliance
reports that farmers require by law and are
inspected against, on an annual basis.
Whilst enabling all farm business types to save
money and also protect the wider environment,
NavigatePro has a particular applicability to the
livestock sector. Alli and her team believe this
sector is under-serviced with digital solutions and
is in need of greater support in terms of better
management of nutrients from both organic and
inorganic sources.
“The livestock sector is also generally carbon
intensive, so by pushing farmers to making simple
changes such as switching to a different fertiliser
product, we can make a difference to their farm’s
carbon budgets,” added Alli.
NESL has recently developed new functionality to
help farmers select and apply fertiliser products
that are best suited to their specific farming
systems. Working with associated environmental
metrics, including GHG intensity, ammonia-N
mitigation, NavigatePro also helps minimise
excess nutrients in the natural environment due to
product choice.
Building on the success of NavigatePro – which
has already begun to break the cycle of traditional,
habit-driven management decisions—NESL has
introduced the Fertiliser Optimiser Tool. This new
feature enhances NavigatePro by streamlining
nutrient management planning, ensuring farmers
choose the most appropriate fertiliser products.
It also enables reporting on greenhouse gas
emissions, supporting more sustainable and
informed decision-making on the farm.
“The tool automates nutrient management by
matching fertiliser products to the crop’s actual
nutrient demand. This avoids applying products
with unsuitable nutrient ratios and over- or undersupply
of essential nutrients. It also ranks the bestmatched
products based on their greenhouse gas
(GHG) intensities and the risk of excess Phosphate
and Ammonia-N emissions, both in terms of
embedded and field emissions. This allows farmers
to choose products that minimise nutrient loading
risks and carbon intensity.
“No other ag software offers this level of
automated nutrient planning. We’ve collaborated
with RSK ADAS, a respected research organisation,
to ensure the Fertiliser Optimiser Tool maintains
technical and agronomic integrity.”
Furthermore, the Fertiliser Optimiser Tool is
advantageous in helping better manage all
nutrients on farm and ensuring farmers keep their
compliance obligations updated each year for NVZ
and farming rules for water.
NESL’s extensive database covers a wide range of
fertiliser products available in the UK market, and
its continually expanding. “Most fertiliser suppliers
support our independent approach and are keen
to have their products included—many are already
carbon footprinting their operations and products,”
stated Alli.
What’s more, based on advice from the AHDB
RB209 nutrient management guide, there is scope
for farmers to complete nutrient planning for

As a startup company that has only been in
the market a few years, NESL aims to be part
of the transition towards lower carbon food

Biogas grass silage additive proves
value after two difficult seasons
Following successful trials in 2023/24 at
Evesham-based Vale Green Energy’s biogas
plant, a new grass silage additive from FM
BioEnergy has further proved its value and
adaptability this year (2024/25).
Silasil Energy SG has delivered
impressive results across a range
of situations from high dry matter
grasses in the West Midlands to wet
fourth-cut silage in Northern Ireland.
Silasil Energy SG was specifically
developed to provide a silage
additive for the variability of dry
matter seen in UK-grown grass, at a
range of dry matters, temperatures
and pH levels. Featuring a unique
combination of four bacterial strains,
instead of the usual two found
in other silage additives, it has
proven ideal for the unpredictable
summer weather seen across the
UK in recent years, as Andy Lee, FM
BioEnergy’s UK Forage Manager,
explains, “In the UK and Ireland,
we’ve had two years with highly
unpredictable weather for making
silage. In some areas it was wet early, in others
it was too hot during mid-summer, drying crops
out. In Northern Ireland particularly, they have had
two atrocious years. This means that farmers have
faced really challenging conditions. However, Silasil
Energy SG has proved its effectiveness in two of
the worst years possible for silage production.”
One user grateful for the benefits of
Silasil Energy SG is Willsborough AD
near Derry/Londonderry in Northern
Ireland. The 500 kW on-farm biogas
plant is predominantly fed using
grass silage (with some wholecrop
cereals), but with average rainfall
between 2.2 and 3.7 inches (56 to
94mm) per month, it can be hard to
produce the recommended minimum
dry matter content of 25%.
“I’m really pleased with the results,”
says Willsborough AD owner Rob
Gallagher. “In the past we’ve had
issues with clamps heating and
spoiling, meaning silage has had to
be used earlier than planned or even
making it unsuitable for use at all.
“However, since using Silasil Energy
SG, from the front of the clamp
to the very back, our silage has
remained cold and free from yeasts and moulds
throughout the season – this hasn’t always been
the case with other silage additives we’ve tried
over the years.”

Bradshaw unveils new all-electric,
compact RCV line-up for smarter
urban waste management
alternative to traditional refuse
collection methods.
Bradshaw Electric Vehicles, one of the UK’s

solutions, has launched a new range of Refuse
Collection Vehicles which are specifically
engineered to tackle the challenges of urban and
food waste collection.
The Refuse Collection Vehicle range, which includes
the Goupil G4, the long-wheelbase G4L and
Bradshaw's pedestrian PFB1500, are each designed
to offer a solution to local authorities and waste
management companies who need to operate in
confined urban and pedestrian areas.
All three models have been made available in 4
body configurations; high tip body only, high tip
body with bin lift, high tip body with bin lift and
compaction arm or high tip body with bin lift and
rear door for food waste collection.
Both the Goupil's and Bradshaw's RCVs are
compact, agile, highly manoeuvrable and ideally
suited to towns, high streets and pedestrianised
areas. Their compact dimensions enable access
through street barriers and around street furniture,
while electric powertrains ensure a silent and
pollution-free operation, making them an efficient

charge. The standard G4-RCV has
a 2.0m3 hopper and a payload of

The pedestrian-controlled RCV handles 120, 240 and
360-litre bins and features a corrosion-resistant
aluminium hopper. The ergonomic tiller head
provides a comfortable and precise operation and
can be driven easily with either hand. With five
braking systems, automatic hill hold, and advanced
safety features, it ensures safe operation on
slopes.
All three RCVs feature corrosion-resistant
aluminium bodies with a 90° tipping angle for easy
waste disposal into larger containers or larger
RCVs for satellite operations, streamlining waste
collection rounds and reducing overall time on the
streets.
With increasing pressure on local authorities
to reduce emissions and improve air quality,
traditional diesel-powered waste vehicles are no

recycling regulations coming into effect on
31st March 2025, requiring businesses across

Recycleye wins FANUC
award for innovation
FANUC UK has underlined its
commitment to AI-powered robotic
waste picking company Recycleye
by extending its exclusive UK deal
with the tech innovator, as well
as internationally recognising its
achievements at the FANUC Global
Partner Awards.
The event, which took place in Japan
in November 2023, saw Recycleye win
one of seven Global Partner Awards
for Innovation. In further evidence
of FANUC’s faith in Recycleye’s
technology, the two companies have
recently extended their exclusivity
agreement, meaning that Recycleye
remains the only UK company that
FANUC UK supply to for recycling
applications.
Founded in London in 2019 with just
four members of staff, Recycleye now
employs over 50 people and is the
European leader in AI/robotic waste
picking technology. It has an installed
base of more than 25 systems across
the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain
and Germany, where its technology
is helping to revolutionise the waste
sector by automating the detection
and sorting of mixed recyclables.
Combining its proprietary AI vision
technology with FANUC 6-axis LR Mate
robots, the Recycleye Robotics system
increases sorting accuracy by up to
12% and improves line output by up to
10%, helping waste operators to boost
their bottom line and providing a

Screening with maximum
efficiency: With the SM
620.3, Doppstadt presents the
latest generation of its proven
trommel screen. Developed
based on customer feedback
and requirements, the SM 620.3
combines the proven performance
of previous models with innovative
features such as the DualPower
drive, which makes operation even
more flexible and convenient.
After Doppstadt presented the
prototype at IFAT 2024, many
screening machines are already
successfully in use today.
Doppstadt focuses on flexibility
and user-friendliness with the SM
620.3. “With the latest generation
of our trommel, users no longer
have to choose between a diesel
or electric drive,” explains Moritz
Müller, Product Manager at
Doppstadt. This is because the
DualPower drive combines both -
depending on the application, an
uncomplicated change is possible.
For example, if there is no power
connection available, diesel
operation is an option. In this case,
the addition of AdBlue is no longer
necessary. This saves costs and
makes refuelling particularly easy.
In residential areas, the e-drive
scores with its low noise level, and
in halls with reduced emissions.
The SM 620.3 also sets new
standards in the area of material
processing. The galvanised
discharge belts offer particularly
high resistance & good protection
against corrosion. This proves
particularly effective in demanding
applications such as the
processing of mineral materials.
