A log book belonging to one
of the two Kiwi pilots who
shot down the first Japanese
plane over Singapore during
World War 2 has been gifted
to the air force museum in
Wigram – complete with
bullet or shrapnel damage.
Sergeant Charlie Cronk’s
log book and other possessions
were sent back to his
family after he was killed during
a landing when his plane
crashed into a fuel tanker in
India four months later.
Now his great nephew
Gradon Conroy, who lives in
Christchurch and has had
the log book since 2005, has
decided it is time to pass it
on. His grandmother Majorie
Prince, Kronk’s sister, gave
it to him when she moved
into a rest home for
safekeeping.
“Donating the log book is a
great way to share his story
and preserve his memory.
The logbook was a prized
possession in the family,” he
said.
Kronk, 23, was posted to
No 243 Squadron RAF in
Singapore, in late 1941.
Made up mostly of New
Zealand pilots, the squadron,
was equipped with obsolete
Brewster Buffalo fighters.
The city council-owned One
New Zealand stadium operator
categorically says ratepayer
money will not go towards
event costs at the $683 million
venue.
It comes after Venues
Ōtautahi did not answer a
question from The Star on May
21 if ratepayers and the city
council would carry some of the
financial cost of hosting topline
events, citing commercial
sensitivity.
The large scale events
will include rugby tests and
concerts from international
artists when the stadium opens
in April.
A Local Government Official
Information and Meetings
Act request from The Star
then asked for all information
the agency held about the
split of event costs between
Venues Ōtautahi and event
clients, but this was also
refused on the basis of
commercial sensitivity.
But, on Tuesday when The
Star sought a response from
Venues Otautahi about a
starnews.co.nz poll showing
strong support for the release
of information, chief executive
Caroline Harvie-Teare conceded
there would be no ratepayer
funding for event costs at the
stadium.
Park farewells devil who made medical history
Orana Wildlife Park’s much
loved Tasmanian Devil, Talei,
has died.
In a statement released
Monday, an Orana spokesperson
said the 7-year-old animal’s
health declined rapidly despite
prompt veterinary care after
staff noticed he was unwell.
“Our team is heartbroken by
his passing,” the statement read.
“We are so grateful for your
aroha, compassion and respect
as we remember Talei.”
Talei made history in 2021 as
the first Tasmanian devil in the
world to undergo a successful
hip replacement surgery.
The procedure was hailed as
a breakthrough for wildlife
medicine.
“Tasmanian devils typically
live up to five years in the wild
and around seven years in
human care,” the zoo noted.
“Talei’s long life is a testament
to the dedication of our team
and veterinary professionals.”
Tasmanian Devils are native
to Australia and are listed as
endangered, primarily due to
devil facial tumour disease,
a highly contagious cancer
which has decimated wild
populations.
At the time of Talei’s surgery,
Rangiora Vet Centre’s Ben
Davidson said its success
showed that “if it’s ok for
domestic animals then it’s
certainly going to be ok for
wildlife.”
$60,000 boost for pro rugby team’s base
BY DANIEL ALVEY
The Selwyn District Council
is paying $60,000 to upgrade
a sports ground for the South
Island’s Super Rugby women’s
team Matatū.
The team is based at Lincoln
University and needs better
facilities.
The council says it is a winwin
deal. In return for the
$60,000, community and sports
organisations will be able to use
the field. Matatū will help with
the Girls on the Go holiday programme,
district
council chief
executive Sharon
Mason said.
Matatū has
been based at
the university
since the team
was founded in
2021.
The ground
which will be
Sharon Mason
upgraded is at the western end
of the university, close to the
intersection of Ellesmere Junction
and Weedons Rds.
The deal is part of a strategic
partnership between the district
council, the university and
Matatū.
“This relationship reflects
council’s commitment to
strategic investment and collaboration
that delivers tangible
benefits for our community,”
Mason said.
She said the district council
has identified a growing need
for increased access to sports
fields in Lincoln.
“Compared to the cost of
The Selwyn District Council have tipped in $60,000 to upgrade this field at the western end of Lincoln University for Matatū
women’s Super Rugby team as part of a strategic partnership between the three organisations.
purchasing land or constructing
a new facility, this partnership
offers a highly cost-effective
solution that delivers immediate
community benefit.”
The university will manage
the upgrade and ongoing
upkeep. New Zealand Cricket,
which operates its High Performance
Centre at Lincoln
University, will assist in the
remediation work.
Matatū general manager
Sarah Munro said many players
and staff live in the Selwyn
district.
“We are incredibly grateful
for the support of Selwyn
District Council to support
this field upgrade to provide a
much-needed space for women
and girls to continue to train
at a professional level, as well
as provide an opportunity for
wider rugby community usage.”
Remediation work includes
spraying off the existing surface,
cultivating the soil and
breaking up the surface, grading
it, preparing and installing
seed and starter fertiliser and
installing new sprinklers.
The partnership between
the university and the district
council has included students
doing internships at the council,
and council staff giving lectures
at the university on resource
planning, management and
leadership. University staff
have also given advice on
council projects.
Log book damage tells story of WW2 attack
› From page 1
Their airfield at Kallang
came under heavy bombing
and a strafing attack from the
Japanese in January 1942, as
they softened up the British
stronghold in preparation for
the invasion which would come
less than a month later.
While on patrol, Kronk and
New Plymouth pilot Bert Wipiti
intercepted a lone Japanese
Ki-46 Dinah reconnaissance aircraft
at high altitude. The pair
split up, and targeted an engine
each, firing both firing bursts
into the aircraft's twin-engines,
sending it to the ground.
Later interviewed by American
war correspondent George
Weller, Kronk said: “I came up
from underneath and saw the
big body of the plane with its
great red circles on the wing
and emptied everything
I had into her. I
kept firing until all my
ammunition was gone.
She was burning all the
way to the ground.”
And in an uncanny
coincidence, Kronk’s log
book has the same damage
caused by shrapnel
or bullet, as that of a Kiwi airman
Transparency wanted
from Venues Ōtautahi
› From page 1
NEWS The Star, July 17, 2025 | 5
Bank closure leaves
customers at sea
Of 2222 respondents to the
poll, 73% said they have a right
to know how Venues Ōtautahi
will share the cost of events
compared to 27% who said they
did not.
The company operates key
venues on behalf of the city
council such as the Town Hall
and Wolfbrook Arena.
Venues Ōtautahi received
$3.2m from the city council in
operational funding for all its
venues in the past financial
year.
“Any operational
or
capital contributions
from
Christchurch
City Council
received by Venues
Ōtautahi
are attributed
to asset management
and
maintenance of
Caroline
Harvie-Teare
the city-owned venues,” Harvie-
Teare said.
Harvie-Teare said whilst she
acknowledged the poll result
sharing commercially sensitive
information had the potential to
hinder active negotiations with
event promoters, sporting bodies
and other venue hirers.
Some starnews.co.nz readers
believed the cost breakdown
should be released for transparency
and accountability for
Venues Otautahi.
However, other readers
trusted Venues Ōtautahi to
make confidential financial
agreements with event clients
on behalf of the city council and
ratepayers.
“Who cares, it is an amazing
asset and will be very well
used. It will generate jobs on
hospitality etc, and bring a lot
of revenue outside the arena
itself,” said Des Wesley.
“They are competing with
other venues across New Zealand
and further ahead; it
would disadvantage us if it was
disclosed,” said Trish Baird.
Other readers argued, regardless
of whether the information
is released, there should be
some form of ticket discount for
Christchurch ratepayers who
have paid $453m of the stadium
cost.
The Government has contributed
$230m.
Venues Ōtautahi confirmed
to The Star last month there
would be no region-based ticket
levy for ticketholders outside
Christchurch.
Any possible ticket levy would
apply to Christchurch residents
also.
branches only 15 minutes drive
away and more customers
choosing to do their banking
online, we’ve made the difficult
decision to close the Ferrymead
branch.”
Said Graham: "I’m being
forced to go to a place I don’t
know, I like to just get around
local.”
While the younger generation
may be moving to online
banking, many elderly
customers still rely on meeting
with a teller face-to-face.
“We don’t have a computer
for a start, we don’t have an
email address, so we rely on
this one here,” he said.
Fellow Westpac customer,
Pam Capaldi, 81, echoed the
same sentiment.
“I was very upset to hear the
news because there are so few
cash points, I’m not very good
with computers being elderly
and it’s much easier to go into
the branch, ask a few questions
and I feel better,” she said.
Pam lives in Hillsborough,
making it convenient for her to
bank in Ferrymead.
She cannot drive, so she
would have to take the orbiter
bus to Barrington to do her
banking after August 8.
She was driven to Westpac
by her son, David Capaldi, who
has experience as an aged care
worker.
“It's the same for all of them
(elderly), they're isolated,
they can't get out. If they
don't use computers and if
they haven't got a physical
branch, they're kind of stuffed,”
he said.
Customers who bank at
Ferrymead will have their
accounts automatically
transferred to Westpac The
Palms branch, located at 20-22
Marshland Rd, Shirley.
NEWS
Councillors reflect on roles, re-election
Local body elections are
approaching and the future
of regional councils is being
debated. So what is the role
of the Canterbury Regional
Council/Environment
Canterbury and its councillors?
Dylan Smits reports
Prime Minister Christopher
Luxon and Resources Minister
Shane Jones have floated the
idea of scrapping regional
councils as part of sweeping
Resource Management Act
(RMA) reforms.
Canterbury Regional Council
(ECan) chair Craig Pauling
pushed back, calling the discussion
unhelpful, though he
acknowledged the need for
reform.
“The current structure and
funding is unsustainable, but it is
not simple and it is not just about
scrapping regional councils and
creating unitary authorities.”
Abolishing regional councils
could see ECan’s responsibilities
given to the city council as a new
unitary authority which would
combine city and regional council
powers as seen in Auckland
and Nelson.
The Star asked the eight
Christchurch-based regional
councillors, and the two Ngāi
Tahu councillors, their top
accomplishment from this term,
whether they have other employment,
and if they are running for
re-election.
Craig Pauling
Christchurch West/Ōpuna
Pauling unexpectedly
became chair in October last
year after former chair Peter
Scott resigned when GPS data
revealed he
had exceeded
the speed limit
678 times in an
ECan-provided
car between
January and
October.
Pauling is
undecided on
standing for
re-election but says his top
Craig Pauling
accomplishment this term was
leading the passage of this year’s
Annual Plan budget through
council in a civil manner, despite
significant disagreements
among councillors.
He works about 50 hours
a week, has no outside job,
and says the chair role is fulltime
– unlike regular regional
councillor positions, which are
typically about 30 hours a week.
Deon Swiggs
Christchurch West/
Ōpuna
Swiggs was voted out as
Central Ward city councillor in
the 2019 local body elections,
following allegations of sexually
inappropriate messages and
in-person interactions with
young people. He denied any
allegations of misconduct.
The future of Environment Canterbury and regional councillors is under question by the Government as the October local
body elections approach.
Swiggs
successfully
stood for the
regional council
in 2022 and
became deputy
chair in October
last year.
He is standing Deon Swiggs
for re-election
and is most proud of helping
reduce the consents backlog
at ECan, partly through a $2.5
million resourcing fund for
consenting staff.
Swiggs does not have other
employment and views the role
as a full-time, 40 hours a week
job but the hours vary.
Greg Byrnes
Christchurch Central/
Ōhoko
An environmental advocate
and first-term councillor, Byrnes
is standing again. He is proud of
successfully pushing for councillor
workshops and briefings to be
made open to the
public.
Although
being a regional
councillor is
often considered
part-time,
Byrnes does not
have any other
employment and
Greg Byrnes
VOTING
Voter turnout for the city council and
regional council in the 2022 local
body elections was similar.
Each of the four Christchurch
regional council constituencies elect
the two candidates with the most
votes.
Turnout by constituency
• Christchurch West: 44.84%
• Christchurch North East: 43.46%
• Christchurch Central: 36.66%
• Christchurch South: 48.24%
treats it as a full-time job through
meeting constituents and conducting
environmental research.

Wolfbrook
on the hunt
in Selwyn
BY DANIEL ALVEY
A major Christchurch property
company is targeting Selwyn as
a prime location for standalone
homes on smaller sections.
Wolfbrook Residential has been
doing letter drops in Prebbleton,
asking people whether they are
considering selling their home or
land. The company is also actively
assessing Lincoln and West
Melton.
Home owners on large sections
ideal for subdivision appear to be
part of the company’s plans.
Wolfbrook is a key player in
the city’s two-storey townhouse
market. In Selwyn it is looking at
standalone homes on smaller sections,
chief executive Guy Randall
said.
“If suitable land is secured,
Wolfbrook would look to deliver
high-quality, architecturally
designed standalone homes that
reflect the needs of the local market,”
he said.
“These areas (Prebbleton, Lincoln
and West Melton) continue
to attract families and professionals
due to their lifestyle appeal,
and improved connectivity to
Christchurch.”
In terms of its immediate focus,
Prebbleton, Randall said the
company is primarily interested
in larger residential sections
or under-utilised landholdings
within the existing township
boundary, but is open to anything.
Large retail centre hits the market
Dress Smart Hornby centre is on
the market with a deadline of
August 14 unless sold prior.
The 7125sq m centre at 411
Main South Rd houses a mix of
45 national and international
brands, including Calvin Klein,
Tommy Hilfiger, Adidas, Puma,
Icebreaker, Mons Royale,
Hallensteins, Bendon and Bonds.
Ryan Johnson, William
Wallace and Jesse Paenga from
Bayleys are handling the sale.
The property, which has
327 car parks, has undergone
several refurbishments over the
years.
The upgrade work currently
under way includes seismic
strengthening, stage one of a
roof sheet replacement, and
waterproofing of the car park
membranes.
As of December last year, the
centre had recorded annual
sales of $56.3 million. It has a
vacancy rate of 2.9%.
The management of the centre
is currently outsourced, but
the property will be sold free
of any existing management
agreements.
Bayleys national director
commercial Ryan Johnson said
Dress Smart Hornby is a proven
asset with the potential for
growth.
"Globally, the outlet sector is
in growth mode, underscored
by consumer demand for wellpriced
branded goods, and
reflected in New Zealand with
a further three dedicated outlet
centres across the North Island,”
Johnson said.
"As the retail property sector
has re-rated faster than other
segments of the commercial
market, retail assets offer good
value for investors.
"With the cost of debt now
sitting at circa-five per cent,
retail property with scale
is looking very attractive to
well-resourced investment
partnerships and syndicators
seeking robust returns and longterm
capital growth.
"Thanks to a diversified and
well-curated tenant mix, the
centre’s financial performance
has held up through fluctuating
market cycles when other parts
of the retail landscape have
faltered."
Said William Wallace, Bayleys
general manager South Island
commercial and industrial:
"Christchurch’s economy
has outperformed many
other parts of the country,
and investors are recognising
the long-run fundamentals of
commercial property within
New Zealand’s most modern
urban centre.
"The city's affordability,
lifestyle appeal and economic
resilience are attracting families
and professionals, and Dress
Smart’s trade area population
is expected to increase by more
than 120,000 people by 2046.
"The region is seeing
major urban expansion and
infrastructure investment,
so this proven retail asset is
uniquely positioned to provide
long-term value to investors
looking for exposure to a stable
and increasing retail sector,"
Wallace said.
The Star, July 17, 2025 | 9
We heard you.
We’re moving forward.
We’ve adopted our Annual Plan for 2025/26. This sets
our work programme for the next year.
To fund this work requires an average increase in revenue from rates of 5.8 per cent.
This is substantially less than the 15.5 per cent increase agreed in the Long-Term Plan 2024-34, and lower than
the 9.9 per cent included in the draft plan we consulted on earlier this year.
We asked for feedback on key public transport topics, including a trial service from Darfield to Rolleston, service
improvements on Route 85 from Rolleston to City direct, and moving to a zone-based fare system.
We heard from 740 individuals, community groups, and organisations from across the region.
Key decisions in our Annual Plan
Zone-based fare system for public transport
• 70 per cent of submitters backed a 2-zone fare system.
• We’re moving to this new structure in February 2026 (subject to ticketing system readiness).
Selwyn services
• 79 per cent of submitters from the impacted area didn’t support a proposed trial of
a Darfield to Rolleston service. Instead, we’ll trial additional capacity on Route 86
(Darfield to City direct), beginning 14 July.
• 70 per cent of submitters from the impacted area supported a 2-year trial of
service improvements on Route 85 (Rolleston to City direct) and we’re
working on a plan for this service.
Resource consent fees and charges
We also consulted on proposed changes to our
consent fees and charges. After considering your
feedback, we’re increasing the hourly charges for
our consent services and simplifying deposits for
processing some consents.
Rugby teams lace up in yellow for child
cancer campaign in Lachie’s memory
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Schoolboy rugby teams around the
country will sport bright yellow
shoelaces this weekend to remember a
Christchurch kid who died from cancer
five years ago.
Kelly Sharpe started Lachie’s Laces
in 2020 as a way to remember her
son Lachie Sutherland, who had
neuroblastoma and died earlier that
year at just 12 after an eight-year battle
with the disease.
The laces are in the colour of the Child
Cancer Foundation and cost $5 a set,
with proceeds going to the foundation.
Lachie loved sport and played both
rugby and football.
Sharpe said the idea to have every
team wearing the laces started with
Lachie’s cousin, now in the Christchurch
Boys’ High first XV, and one of his
best friends, who is at Nelson
College.
With this year being five years since
his death, it would be a special way to
remember him.
“I wondered if we could maybe have
those teams wear the laces, as something
really personal to these two boys who
had a close relationship with Lachie,”
Sharpe said.
That idea extended to an attempt to get
all 10 teams in the competition on board,
a movement which has been more than
successful.
CHRISTCHURCH
The yellow laces will be worn to remember Lachie
Sutherland (below) who died in 2020 after a battle
with neuroblastoma.
Every team in the Miles Toyota
Premiership will wear the laces,
alongside some schools outside the
competition.
“We had Napier Boys’ College come
on board, we had Wellington College,”
Sharpe said.
“Spreading into those North Island
teams, which we couldn't have hoped for,
is just absolutely amazing.”
West Melton have also been supplied
with more than 100 pairs of laces, which
will be worn by their division 1 side,
their under 18s and under 16s.
For Sharpe, seeing the laces around is
always a special reminder of Lachie.
“A conversation I had with Lachie,
towards the end when he knew he was
going to die, was that he didn't want to be
forgotten,” she said.
“That was kind of a promise and a
commitment that we made with him,
and this is part of ensuring that legacy
continues.
“I love it when people post the laces
and they’ll tag Lachie’s Laces so it comes
up on my feed, it’s a wonderful feeling.”
We Were
Burnham soldiers Keri Ruru and Wattie Cooper pause for a shave during their continuous pool playing world record.
WORLD RECORD ATTEMPTS
From hand holding to coal
carrying and pool playing,
numerous attempts at world
records have been made in
Christchurch over the years.
Jenny Morgan and Don
Cameron chalked up the
miles on New Brighton
beach in July 1973, training
for a world record attempt
at running from Sydney to
Melbourne.
Stonemason John Hill
walked 33km with 51kg of
coal on his back in 1977,
beating the previous world
record of 29km and raising
$3000 for Hohepa School. Hill
had walked 39.5km the year
before, but it was not officially
recognised.
Keeping it sporty, younger
members of Ferrymead
Railway attempted to ride
up and down a half-mile
track on a replica Kalamazoo
trolley for 39hrs in 1974. The
endurance “trollathon” was
The Star, July 17, 2025 | 13
said to be a world first.
Efforts to break the record
for the world’s largest aerobic
class saw simultaneous
sessions held around the
country in 1985 as part
of Telethon, including in
Cathedral Square.
That same year, a less
popular attempt to break the
world hand holding record at
Addington Raceway saw only
1000 people turn up.
Hillmorton High School
students Wendy Harding and
Bill van Peer tried to break
the world record for non-stop
guitar playing in 1972.
And in 1973, soldiers Keri
Ruru, Wattie Cooper, Jim
Brockie and John Taitoko
broke the world record for
continuous pool playing, at
the Dunsandel Hotel. The four
corporals played for 82.5hrs,
breaking the previous record
of 72hrs. They even took time
out to shave.
Bulls serve up fresh approach for playoff
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Linwood are taking a novel
build-up into the preliminary
finals of the Metro premier
competition on Saturday.
Instead of arduous training
sessions at their Linfield Park
home ground, the squad
has recently opted for short
Thursday night sessions on the
grass, before going out for a team
dinner.
They face High School Old Boys
at Bob Deans Field on Saturday,
with the winner advancing to
next week’s grand final.
Head coach Brendon Nolan
said the focus in recent weeks
had been on building team
connections.
“I’m real keen for the guys
just to bond and recognise the
moments we’re creating at the
moment,” he said.
“You can skip through them
pretty quickly and then it's
a bit late to reflect on. But if
you’re living in the moment and
enjoying it, it’s awesome.”
The proof is in the pudding
– Linwood toppled Sydenham
35-25 on Saturday to reach
the preliminary finals stage of
the competition for the third
consecutive season.
Despite being outscored four
tries to three, they relied on the
boot of first-five Josh Jennings,
who slotted six penalties to put
his team out of reach.
“Everyone’s nailing their
role, which is good for us at the
moment,” Nolan said.
“The management, the
Linwood's Saliosi Rova and PJ Palamo combine to tackle a Sydenham attacker.
groundsman, all the backroom
staff, and the boys are just
knuckling down.
“It’s a good spot to be in.”
In the other preliminary final,
top seeds Marist Albion will take
on surprise package Lincoln
University, who upset University
of Canterbury 25-19 on Saturday.
Lincoln defended stoutly for
the last two minutes, before
debutant Angus Reeves secured
a vital turnover which allowed
his team to kick the ball out and
clinch the victory.
Captain Zach Parkin said his
men had improved as the season
progressed, especially after going
down 52-17 to University in
round 3.
“On Saturday we lifted again
and our defence closed it out,” he
said.
“Everyone was out on their
feet, absolutely buggered. It was a
pretty unreal effort to finish.”
Parkin said Marist will be a
tough opponent, with Lincoln
having lost 33-26 when the teams
met earlier in the season.
preliminary final since 2022.
In the plate competition,
New Brighton halfback Tyson
Belworthy redeemed himself in
their semi-final.
After missing a potentially
match-winning penalty in last
week’s premier semi-final loss
to Lincoln, Belworthy slotted a
conversion in the last seconds to
seal a 22-21 win over Sumner.
In the other plate semi-final,
Belfast beat Burnside 55-19.
now meet in the final at Rawhiti
Boys’ High eye unbeaten finish
ahead of premiership playoffs
BY SAM COUGHLAN
The two frontrunners in the
Miles Toyota Premiership will
finally meet in the last match
before the semi-finals.
Competition leaders
Christchurch Boys’ High School
will travel to Blenheim to take
on Marlborough Boys’ College on
Saturday knowing the winner
will seal top spot.
Both sides have won all eight
of their matches, with Boys’ High
securing one extra bonus point.
Head coach Pete Chaplin said
his team was ready and raring to
go after a two-week break for the
school holidays.
“The boys are back, switched
on and ready to get back into it,
which is cool,” he said.
“(Marlborough) have played
really well this season so we're
looking forward to going up
there and having a really good
game.”
Chaplin said the break had
come at a good time with many
of his squad battling illness or
injury in the final weeks of term.
He was looking forward to
the opportunity for the squad
to spend a couple of days on the
road together. They drive up to
Blenheim tomorrow, stay the
night and then play at 11am on
Saturday, before heading home
that afternoon.
“I’m really looking forward
you can build in your team just
being on a bus and spending
time together in the lead-up to a
game,” Chaplin said.
Both Boys’ High and
Marlborough will get a week off
after the match, with the top two
teams earning byes straight to
the semi-finals.
The team third on the table will
play the sixth-placed side, with
fourth playing fifth in the first
round. Currently, those spots are
held by St Thomas of Canterbury,
Nelson College, Christ’s College,
and St Andrew’s College.
Shirley Boys’ High are just
outside the playoff spots but
know a win over Christ’s College
will be enough to see them in,
at either their opponents’ or St
Andrew’s’ expense.
St Andrew’s visit last-place
Rangiora High, while St Bede’s
travel to play Nelson College and
St Thomas host Selwyn.
The match between Nelson
The CRL Premiership finals
with one big name missing.
Defending champions Hornby
Panthers were knocked out
after losing 34-12 to Linwood
Keas in the final round of
matches on Saturday, allowing
Greymouth Greyhounds to
jump them into fourth with
victory over Eastern Eagles.
Linwood hosts Halswell
Hornets in the major semifinal
with the winner to
progress to the grand final
in two weeks’ time, while
Riccarton Knights host
Greymouth in the minor
semi-final, the winner to play
the loser of the other game.
Matches kick off at 2.45pm on
Baynes sets his
sights on seeing
the world, one
marathon at a time
Few in Christchurch’s running
scene can claim to be more
well-known than Oska Baynes. A
six-time national half-marathon
champion, Baynes is now shifting
his focus to the full marathon
distance. Sam Coughlan catches
up with him
It might be winter, but Oska
Baynes is out pounding more
than 150km of tarmac every
week.
The 34-year-old is one of New
Zealand’s most accomplished
long-distance runners, with six
national half-marathon titles
under his belt, and has recently
pivoted more into the full
42.2km event.
His ruthless training schedule,
normally getting through two
workouts every day, goes handin-hand
with his role as owner
of shoe store The Frontrunner
Colombo.
But things could have turned
out very differently.
Baynes only took up running at
16 while at St Andrew’s College,
struggling with his personal life
at school and at home.
“Most of us teenagers with
a broken home probably
struggle with stuff. Then you
throw yourself into a pressure
cooker, private school, elite
environment,” he said.
“I didn’t have the emotional
maturity, the social maturity, and
if you don’t have that structure
it can often come out in negative
ways. I probably let myself
down numerous times with my
actions.”
It took a helping hand from
his maths teacher, former
Commonwealth Games
representative and 33-time
national champion Phil Costley,
to steer him on the right path.
“He (Costley) was consistent,
I didn’t have a lot of that
consistency.
“Year 11, 12, and 13, I needed
that consistent, unconditional
male role model.”
Costley’s influence was hugely
important for the young Baynes.
"It wasn’t even discipline.
It was just, ‘Sunday morning
we’re going for a run’, and it
meant I didn’t go out Saturday
night,” he said.
“I didn’t play up or I didn’t
want to let him down. In the
end, I think that’s probably
what it boils down to.
"He was probably one of
three teachers at school that, if
they weren’t there, I wouldn’t
have bothered turning up. The
situation could have been quite
different.”
Baynes talks a lot about
consistency. His daily routine
is rigid but purposeful, centred
around training and family.
“My priority at the beginning
and end of every day is family
– non-negotiable. So (spending
time with) my 10-month-old son
and my wife from when I get up
at six until I leave the house at
7.30, quarter-to-eight.”
He trains from 8-9.30am,
works in the shop until 5pm
and trains again in the evenings
before heading home to spend
the remainder of the day with
his family.
“My (nine-year-old) daughter
and I, at the moment we’re
learning to speak German,” he
said.
“We sit up in the evenings for
an hour-and-a-half and we talk
to each other about our day.
Then I pop her to bed at eight,
maybe spend an hour with my
wife if she’s still up, half an
hour to myself, and I’m sleeping
at 9.30.”
Having spend the majority of
his career focusing on the halfmarathon,
winning numerous
national titles and representing
New Zealand at the world
championships in Latvia in
2023, his training at the moment
is all about the marathon.
Oska Baynes celebrates in style after winning the Christchurch Marathon in May.
“Running is boring.
Ultimately it sucks, right?
It’s the same bullshit two
hours a day.”
Oska Baynes
Baynes said his goal is to
travel and experience new
sights – while lowering his personal
best time – 2hrs 16mins
– and he believes he can shave
off three to four minutes.
“I want to see how fast I can
run over a marathon, that’s the
carrot keeping me going,” he
said.
“I want to see if I can go to
Frankfurt, or Osaka, or Vienna,
or Valencia or wherever I want
to go, and use running as an
opportunity to see some places.
“We’ll try and make that happen
at some point next year.”
In May he won the Christchurch
Marathon for the second
time, coming home in 2hrs
20mins.
It wasn’t his fastest time,
but the home crowd made it
memorable.
“Everyone you run past when
you come into the last 300
(metres), people are seven deep,
both sides. And when you’re
winning by six minutes, you can
take your time to soak it in,”
Baynes said.
There were man familiar
Oska Baynes has owned The Frontrunner Colombo since 2016
faces – people he had met
through running circles or
helped at the store. Baynes has
owned The Frontrunner since
2016 and recently opened a
second store in Nelson.
“Everyone knows everyone.
What I will remember is that
we’ve influenced and we’ve
helped and we’ve cared for all
of those people.
“The marathon recap said
there might have been 15,000
people out supporting, and for
all of those people, we will have
helped them or helped someone
they know over the last decade.
It was really amazing being
there.”
Baynes said the key to
running is to find a way to make
it exciting, whether that is going
out with friends or something
else.
“Running is boring. Ultimately
it sucks, right? It’s the same
bullshit two hours a day.
“If you’re a kid, or even an
adult, make it fun.
“You do it for long enough,
you’ll find it’s two degrees,
sideways rain, and you’re up
on the Summit Rd with four
of your mates on a Sunday
morning laughing at each other
about how f***ing stupid you
are.”
Next up for Baynes is a
marathon in Japan in February,
with Frankfurt also in his sights
for October.
“I’ll be knocking on the door
of 36 then, so we’ll see how
much patience my wife has.”
