The musical duo returns to Vallarta

a year after their paradise wedding

When I first learned about Branden & James’ deeply moving story, I knew I had to have it featured

and share this wonderful tale. From the way they met, to their reconciliation with their families and

their wedding in Puerto Vallarta, it is all very touching and inspiring.

This handsome couple met about five years ago in Los Angeles, in a place that it is not usually

known for creating lasting relationships - SCRUFF. The very next day after connecting in the app,

they met in person and sat on James’ couch and just chatted for a while. Branden had to leave town

for six weeks for work, so they got to know each other through messages in that lapse.

During that process, they discovered that both were professional musicians, so Branden hired

James to play in a gig with him in Palm Springs as his musical director, as James is an arranger

and a pianist. The audience in Palm Springs really felt their connection and their sound moved

and delighted them so much - to Branden & James’ surprise - that they thought: Hey?? We’ve

got something here, so they decided to team up and give it a go. This would also give them the

opportunity to spend more time together.

10

OUTANDABOUTPV.COM

They went on to form the now internationally recognized musical duo ‘Branden &

James’, which has really taken off. They have played in many venues across the globe

and are currently on a tour which has brought them to Puerto Vallarta for their third

season with their new show called The Phantom of the Greatest Showman.

As if being in a committed relationship in today’s environment wasn’t hard enough,

Branden & James have managed to survive four years of living, working and traveling

together. This is only a testament that if you are truly committed and love each other,

then one can fight against all the odds.

“They always say don’t work with your partner, that’s death to a relationship. Now, after four

years together, we have had an argument or two that weren’t consequential. And never

about our work! We promised not to ever go there. People notice our crazy chemistry with

each other on and off stage and remark on it at every concert. We quip and tease about

spending too much time together, but the truth is, we’re one in the same and it comes from

our similar upbringing, our love for one another, and the sometimes unfortunate reality that

we share a brain!”

The duo arrived in Puerto Vallarta on January 13th, 2019, exactly one year after their

paradise wedding. They are celebrating their anniversary here with the new show

and also recalling how special and nostalgic that occasion was.

11

“I grew up in the church and had rocky relationships

with my family post coming out that lasted well into

my 30’s. It wasn’t until they saw the process from

start to finish of my time on America’s Got Talent

in 2013, that hey began to see how much common

ground we had. We weren’t so different: we are

family after all. It was a huge reconciliation. Because

of our distance, I wasn’t able to tell them that I was

HIV positive until 11 years after my diagnosis.”

says Branden.

Their wedding was very nostalgic in part because

Branden & James’ mothers walked them down the

aisle. “It was a dream come true. I never thought

that would ever happen. I cried tears of joy over

the three days from our wedding” Says Branden.

“It was pretty special. My Dad participated in our

ceremony with a biblical reading and his Dad said

a prayer” James adds.

During Branden’s time on America’s Got Talent – where

he was a finalist - he says “Aside from all the amazing

professional things that happened in my experience

[on the show], there was a lot of healing in my family

between me and my siblings and me and my parents

because we were able to watch these problems that

we had for years on television and we could all see

things through a different lens and it really helped

healing. It was very beautiful.”

The couple simply fell in love with Puerto Vallarta

in their first season and that is why they picked

this place as their wedding destination. “When

we decided in 2017 that we were ready to marry

one another, Puerto Vallarta was the first and only

suggestion out of our mouths.”

“I was here in port for one day only on a cruise

ship back in December 2016 when I mistakenly

wandered by The Palm. The name rang a bell

because I knew that my friend, Spencer Day had

played shows there in the past. Shortly after

sending an email with promotional materials, I

received a phone call from Amy Armstrong who

was entertainment director at the time. She

took a chance and brought us down to Puerto

Vallarta without knowing us or ever seeing us

live. Our career has grown so much because of

Amy and others such as Kim Kuzma. We fell in

love with the energy at The Palm the moment

we walked through the door.”

“That love continued to spread outside the

music venues as we explored the tattered

streets of Zona Romantica and then further

South to Yelapa and North to Bucerias. James

and I both understood how incredibly special

this place was.”

“We never wanted to be “one of those

couples” who had a ridiculously expensive

destination wedding. Luckily, it is easy and

relatively inexpensive to get to Puerto

Vallarta from the USA. Our Australian guests

definitely win accolades for making the

trek all the way from OZ. Not to mention, it

is just such a beautiful region of the world

to be in, there was no question our guests

would enjoy their time here.”

“We implored the help of Traci King, a

manager of The Swedes restaurant in

Puerto Vallarta. With her extensive

background in wedding and event

planning, she had all of the expertise to

make our day feel authentic and elegant at

a very reasonable cost.“

When we decided in 2017 that

we were ready to marry one another,

Puerto Vallarta was the first and only

suggestion out of our mouths

Branden was recently asked to write

a memoir about his life, which will be

published in November 2019. “It’s going

to be called Lyrics of my Life. It’s the story

of growing up gay in a Christian family – and

some stories from my time in America’s Got

Talent and my journey of being HIV positive

for the last thirteen years.”

This powerhouse cello and vocal duo are

not stopping anytime soon, in fact, they’re

just getting started. Apart from their

current world tour and a memoir in the

works and all previous accomplishments,

they just recorded a new album with

Decca Records producer, Patrick Hamilton.

In addition, they recently signed with 98

Degrees’ manager, David Britz. As if that

wasn’t enough, they also signed with major

representation at ICM in NYC & LA.

The future for Branden & James only seems

bright and promising. If you’ve had the

privilege to meet these wonderful human

beings and know their story, you’ll feel truly

humbled. Follow them. Go and see their

show. They will take your breath away.

temporada con su nuevo show llamado The

Phantom of the Greatest Showman.

No

éramos tan diferente. Después de todo somos

familia. Fue una reconciliación enorme. Porque

debido a nuestra distancia, no había podido

me encontré con The Palm. El nombre se me hacía

conocido porque sabía que mi amigo, Spencer Day,

había tenido shows aquí.

fácil y relativamente económico llegar a Puerto

Vallarta de los Estados Unidos. Nuestros invitados

restaurante The Swedes en Puerto Vallarta.

Noviembre 2019. “Será llamada Lyrics of my Life.

no pararán. De hecho, apenas están

empezando. Aparte de su actual gira

mundial, una autobiografía y todos

los logros que ya han tenido, Branden

y James acaban de grabar un nuevo

disco con el productor de Decca

Records, Patrick Hamilton. Además,

ellos acaban de firmar con el manager

de la banda musical 98 degrees, David

Britz. Por si eso no fuera suficiente,

ellos también firmaron con grande

representación con la agencia de talento

ICM en Nueva York y Los Ángeles.

El futuro de Branden y James solo

se ve muy prometedor. Si has tenido

el privilegio de conocer a estos

hermosos seres humanos y conoces

su historia, te sentirás realmente

humilde. Síguelos. Ve a ver su show. Te

tomaran tu aliento.

PUERTO VALLARTA:

A POPULAR LGBT

WEDDING

DESTINATION

By Alejandro Chávez

Puerto Vallarta is the most gay-friendly town in Mexico

and one of the top same-sex wedding destinations in

the world. PV legalized gay marriage in 2016 and is

also becoming a very popular LGBT vacation spot. Year

after year, the number of LGBT visitors has increased

significantly, making the number of gay-friendly

resorts and tourist attractions to increase as well.

PV offers great weather, Mexican charm, beautiful

ocean bay, beaches, mountains, gorgeous sunsets,

delicious food, culture, endless things to do and see,

welcoming people, just to name a few. And for these

reasons, people are finding Puerto Vallarta to be a perfect

location to celebrate love and make it memorable.

As locals, there are many things that we’ve come to

take for granted by living in this tropical Mexican

paradise, but visitors do not overlook those things and

they are truly appreciated for what they are, quite

exotic and wonderful.

Vallarta’s nightlife, especially that which is

concentrated in the Zona Romantica and Centro, is

very suitable for wedding guests during their stay. With

numerous restaurants, clubs, and live shows, the area

offers gay and straight guests alike plenty of options.

Most wedding couples feel that keeping their venue

and guest lodging close to the center of the action is

quite important, giving their guests as many options as

possible for them to enjoy their vacation.

“Same-sex weddings are now legal here, so we can do

them, no issues there. Now, if they want to do the legal

aspects in their home country and do the romantic or

spiritual ceremony here, and have the best party, this

is what Puerto Vallarta is best for. Doing a wedding

in Mexico, or in Puerto Vallarta, is unique. Only here

you can have Mariachi, fireworks, an incredible

dinner, top-notch service, and a wedding scene that

in the USA only the rich and famous could afford, and

a paradisiacal ocean view. The truth is that there

are very few places that could offer the same.”

Paula said.

“Gay couples should come to get married in Puerto

Vallarta because besides being a paradise, it has

incredible weather, beautiful places - Zona Romantica

is spectacular -, really entertaining bars like El Garbo

Piano bar. This is a gay-friendly city, where you’ll find

a variety of things. We, locals, receive them with open

arms. All this make up the ingredients that would make

your Vallarta wedding a unique adventure and where

we could make dreams come true” she adds.

Where is the trend going for Puerto Vallarta weddings?

More and more couples come to Vallarta to celebrate

their union and this only increases each year. We

talked to wedding planner Paula Arredondo Vial from

‘Vallarta Wedds Planners’ and she tells us her take on this.

Story and photo By Alejandro

Puerto Vallarta has been on the international map in the

LGBT Community for many years as an exciting travel

destination for its beaches and its great nightlife. Being

one of the most popular LGBT destinations, Vallarta has

attracted gay travelers from all over the world.

As people are taking notice of this paradise, PV is

attracting gay travelers in couples more than ever,

with romantic beachfront restaurants and numerous

options each night for live entertainment. Couples

on vacation find a variety of options for daytime and

night-time activities, but more and more couples are

also now flocking to Vallarta to celebrate milestones

in their lives – gay and lesbian honeymoons, romantic

proposal trips, engagement parties, destination

weddings, and important anniversaries.

Gay

Romance

Travel

Destination weddings may overshadow the other

types of romance travel because they involve larger

numbers of people, but from a tourism perspective,

the lower-key couples-based travel can actually bring

in just as many travelers over the long run.

Gustavo Silva, rooms division manager at the gay-marketed

Casa Cupula, said “Of our reservations, we have

60% of rooms booked by couples rather than singles.

Of those couples, 30% of them are traveling here to

celebrate anniversaries and 3% are celebrating

honeymoons,” he said.

While it’s nearly impossible to record statistics on such

private celebrations, anecdotal evidence collected from

local sources in the restaurant, hotel, and event industries

suggests that gay couples are increasingly attracted to

Puerto Vallarta for important occasions in their lives.

“We haven’t been asked to do one yet, but I think it

would be really fun to put together a ‘flash mob’ for a

gay marriage proposal on the Malecón, as we’ve seen

on YouTube” said Robert Schley, director of Mexico

Event Design, a Vallarta-based event planning company

for the LGBTQ Community.

Local restaurants are often asked to set up private

rooms for small groups looking to celebrate occasions

such as engagement parties or wedding anniversaries.

Julie Guerrero, owner of No Way José restaurant in Zona

Romantica, remarked that she has seen two increasing

trends recently. “Someone will ask us to hide or have a

ring accompany a bottle of champagne or dessert as

part of a marriage proposal,” she said. “Another thing

we’re seeing more of recently is couples filming themselves

at the restaurant to include in a ‘mini-movie’ of their

experience here.”

Turismo de

Romance

Gay

hemos visto en YouTube”, dijo Robert Schley, director of

Julie Guerrero, dueña del restaurante No Way

Have your

Dream Luxury

Beach Wedding

at Almar Resort

& Mantamar Beach Club

Sponsored Content

Beachfront LGBT luxury wonderland, the Almar Resort and Mantamar beach

club, are conveniently located in Puerto Vallarta’s version of the Castro District

of San Francisco, the Zona Romantica. This hotel caters exclusively to the LGBT

community but is straight-friendly. If you ever thought of having a lovely, stylish,

and memorable beach wedding in a paradise destination like Vallarta, this is the

place for you.

For your wedding, Almar Resort will take care of you. You won’t have to worry

about a thing. They initially sit down with you and discuss your desires for how

you want your dream wedding to be. If your partner or you don’t really have

a precise idea, the experts at Almar will guide you through.

Beach weddings are popular, and with good reason. At Almar, you will have

the opportunity to have your sublime beach wedding next to the original

and symbolic seahorse statue. Add a beautiful sunset that Vallarta always

provides, and you will have a lovely photo op.

“Our resort differs from other beach front hotels in the fact that Almar

is exclusively LGBT. We are a trusted establishment. The availability and

the openness that we possess is greater because a lot of our guests

that get married here already are familiar with us. They fall in love with

Mantamar because it’s a place where they can be themselves and they

can be free. It’s also private enough - it’s a place for them. It’s a place

to make wonderful memories. We’ve had couples that have first met

in this hotel.” Edgar Joya says.

After your ceremony at the beach, walk just a few steps to Mantamar

Beach Club for your grand dinner party which can hold up to 150 people.

There, you will have everything that will guarantee a good time, including

a lighted dancefloor!

The food that you will be serving your guests is also something that the

people at Almar take very seriously. Early in the planning process, they will

ask what kind of food you would like for your event. If you want beef, chicken,

vegetarian, Mexican, or whatever, their top chef will give you several options

based on your preference and then a tasting will be provided so together

with your hubby you can choose the one you like best.

The TOP SKY BAR is also another option where couples can have their

ceremony. It is most commonly used for rehearsal dinners, pre-wedding

parties where guests meet other guests, families, etc., or even the after

parties. This space at the top of Almar has breath-taking views, and you

even have the option to have fireworks launched from down at the beach

to have a spectacular show!

“There was one couple that originally met in our hotel. They were

from the United States but lived in different cities. They had a

long-distance relationship for a year after they met here and then

they contacted us saying that they wanted to get married in our

hotel because of having met here and the great memories they had

of not only Puerto Vallarta but this hotel as well. They got married

two months ago.” Edgar Joya adds.

Almar Resort and Mantamar Beach Club have literally everything

within their reach to make any kind of party or event happen, and

above all, they have the exclusiveness of being an LGBT hotel that

welcomes everyone, no exceptions. They have the beach and new,

modern, and luxurious facilities to accompany that.

“The quality of the top-notch service here is unmatched. Not only do

we have this characteristic in our service, but we also have human

quality aspect. We give heart and soul into our work. That’s what

makes us stand out.” Edgar Joya notes.

Edgar Joya, PR and sales manager for Almar Resort & Mantamar Beach Club

tells us, “As a resort, we have a lot of conveniences. We have the capacity, the

facilities, the flexibility with the hours. We can go up till 2am or even longer at

the TOP SKY BAR for special occasions.”

¿Quieres casarte en

este paraíso?

Aquí tenemos

10 tips

considerar.

Algunos prefieren

Want to tie the knot in this paradise?

Here are 10 tips

on how to get started!

By Alejandro Chávez

Have you thought about having your wedding here in

beautiful Puerto Vallarta? If so, do you know where to

even begin? What to look for? This is definitely a very

special occasion, so you want to get every detail right

and with the least amount of hurdles. We talked to the

experts to get their best recommendations for those

lovebirds considering tying the knot in this romantic

paradise as a destination wedding.

Choosing the venue

This is perhaps the most important aspect of your

planning process. There are a lot of elements to

consider when picking out a venue. It needs to be

big enough to accommodate all of your guests. It

also needs to be in close proximity or have lodging

included for you, the wedding party and the guests.

Whittle down your guest list

Before committing to firm numbers with your

venue and your caterer, reduce your list as much

as possible. Along with your partner, make three

lists: those who HAVE to be there, those you WANT

to be there, and those you’d LIKE to be there, and

then concentrate on the first two categories. Try to

estimate your guests’ travel costs and determine

how doable it is for them to actually make the trip.

Get the food right

Make sure that you’ve tasted everything that’s going

to be served, and make sure that the caterer has a

great reputation and lots of recommendations from

previous weddings. Getting the food right is much

more important than any fancy decorations. After

all, you can’t eat the decorations!

Confirm the date

Wedding planners want to make the best out of your

special occasion, so they prefer at least 6-12 months in

advance notice. “We suggest that you run a trial balloon

invitation out to your closest friends and family members

with some potential dates and just say “in Puerto Vallarta.”

Then, armed with the date that works the best for all the

key people, you can send us looking for the venue(s) that

will accommodate your expected number of guests and

that meet all the other criteria that you’re looking for”,

local gay wedding planner Robert Schley says.

Take care of your guests! It’s not all

about you

It is your responsibility to help take care of your

guests throughout their stay in Mexico. They are

traveling all the way here to accompany you on this

romantic tropical adventure so the least you can do

is to offer them a good time! Take into consideration

any physical limitations, food allergies, dietary

restrictions, lodging proximity to the venue, town,

etc. It’s important to think about the entire

experience, not just the day of the wedding.

Do NOT do a DIY destination wedding

Rather, leave it to the experts. Big hotels and resorts

have their planners or get an independent one. But

whatever you do, get someone to do the dirty work

for you.

Shop the packages

A variety of gay-friendly hotels offer LGBT destination

wedding packages, which include all the necessary

elements for a complete wedding.

Pre-event site visit

It is highly recommended to visit Vallarta early in your

planning process in order to physically experience the

venue before you decide on it. You also should taste the

food and beverages that will be served.

Don’t feel limited to using a big resort

Everyone has different taste. Some prefer to have their

event at a big, comfortable and popular resort, and others

might want a more intimate and cozy gathering. It’s up

to you to decide what you want and then go from there.

Link lodging and the venue

This can be a way to save money, even to the point of

helping to finance the cost of your event. You might

think that you could only do this by booking into a big

hotel, but that’s not necessarily always the case. It is

also recommended a “buyout” of a boutique hotel or a

private luxury villa as your wedding venue and lodging

for key people while booking the rest of the guests in a

nearby hotel or other villas.

Alfonso López and Puerto Vallarta:

How 2 months turned into 5 years

Sponsored Content

Alfonso López is another example of how

Puerto Vallarta captures our hearts and

changes our lives forever. His story is pretty

remarkable and shows us how our dreams

could become reality if we work hard to

achieve them.

Alfonso was raised on both sides of the

US-Mexico border in several cities but settled

in Texas when he started college at age 16

under a scholarship. He is a man of many

talents. López is a singer, director, performer,

he teaches singing, he does light design for

all of his shows and others at ACT II

Entertainment. He also loves Mixed Martial

Arts, has trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai.

Alfonso holds a Master of Music Degree in

Vocal Performance from The University of

Texas-Pan American where he graduated

with Highest Honors. In Texas, he has directed

children, youth, and adult choruses, musicals

in Universities and Colleges and more than

150 concerts at “Opera Teatro Bar”. He has

also performed in various plays, recitals, operas,

and musicals throughout Mexico and The

United States.

His dream was to be an opera singer. “I

remember the lead Soprano bursting into

tears when she saw her husband and their

two-year-old baby girl that had flown to see

her for closing night. She hadn’t seen them

at all for 8 months.” Alfonso recalls. “I moved

several times during my childhood, and all I

wanted for my adult life was to have a more

stable life than what I had lived. I realized that

the unpredictable Opera life was not for me,

so I went into academia.” Alfonso adds.

“The years that I worked as a University

professor in Texas, I was tasked with the

Opera and Broadway Musical Workshops.

I was also involved in all the big musical

productions that the Theater department

produced every semester. Both the theatre

and music departments were really helpful

and encouraging during those years”.

Alfonso at that time had no idea he

would be doing it professionally a few

years later in Mexico.

Five years ago, Alfonso was working as a

professor in Texas. His work visa was about

to expire, and under that specific visa, It was

required to leave the US for at least one year

until It could be renewed again. Going back

to Mexico would feel foreign. Alfonso wasn’t

used to speaking in Spanish anymore since

he had lived in the US. “I had had several

job offers in other cities in Mexico, but one

of my best friends back in Texas suggested

for me to check Puerto Vallarta. He said, “I’ve

traveled all over the world, and that is my

favorite city.” I thought, Ok, I’ll go to Mexico

for 2 years and do a tour of Mexico… Let’s

start in PV for 2 months.” Alfonso says.

“So I moved to PV and those two months have

turned into 5 years of an incredible personal

and professional growth. I never thought that

almost immediately arriving in PV, I would be

directing the PVGMC (Puerto Vallarta Gay

Men’s Chorus). I’ve had the privilege to meet

amazing people that have made a huge

impact in my life here, like Bob Bruneau

(founder of PVGMC) who was an incredible

source of encouragement my first years in PV.

At the end of Act II’s first season, I met Danny

Mininni, and along with Mary Amelotte were

looking for a director for Forever Plaid. And

well, the rest is history. I am grateful to PVGMC

for allowing me to lead them for four years and

for Act II for giving me the opportunity to show

what I am capable of.”

As like many of us, Alfonso loves Puerto

Vallarta. “I love that PV is a very welcoming

city. There’s a distinct friendliness that is unique

to it, and we’re all part of it.”. As with the art

community here, he sees it growing in the

future. “The art community has grown so much

in so little time. I am lucky and blessed to be

part of its emergence. I think it is still growing and

will continue growing, and I’m happy to see that.”

Forever Plaid was Alfonso’s first production at

ACT II. “We started auditions and rehearsals

in the summer of 2014 and opened the show

that winter. I’m very thankful to Mary Amelotte

and Danny Mininni for trusting me. Also very

thankful to the great cast: Bob Bruneau, Elvis

Martinez, Roberto Gomez, and José María

Caudillo - it was a wonderful experience.”

“When I started working at Act II, I still wasn’t

very confident about my skills as a stage

director. I had wonderful mentors back

in Texas, but I still doubted myself. Danny

Mininni always trusted in me and was so

encouraging and full of praise at all the

decisions I would make as a stage director.

He still is. The confidence I have as a stage

director is all thanks to him, and I am very

grateful for that.”

“I am also very grateful at all the wonderful

people I have worked with at Act II. Everyone

has been incredibly encouraging. Oscar

Cisneros has also been a great fan and

supporter of my work. I am blessed that the

three of us are now partners at Act II. When

Danny Mininni first mentioned the possibility

of us 3 being partners at Act II, I didn’t

believe it. I still don’t, haha.”

In Puerto Vallarta, López has been Artistic

Director for The Puerto Vallarta Gay Men’s

Chorus, acted in “The 39 Steps”, directed and

performed in the musicals “Forever Plaid”

and “Avenue Q”, produced and directed

cabaret shows, and co-produced The Voice

of Vallarta. Last season, he directed “The

Rocky Horror Show”, “Some Enchanted

Evening”, “Diana Villamonte’s Motown and

Beyond”, and other shows at Act II Entertainment.

Currently, he teaches singing lessons and is

Act II Stages’ business Partner and Co-Artistic

Director. This is Alfonso’s 5th season at Act

II. “Now, as a partner, I have been charged

at creating our main stage seasons. All of

us at Act II have worked very hard to create

something special for you this season. It is

a work of love. Four years ago, many

people wondered, including myself, when

or if I was going to go back to the US. Four

years ago many people wondered if PV was

ready for “the arts”. Four years ago, many

people wondered how much longer Act II

would survive. Quoting our Gershwin revue,

Our Love Is Here To Stay.”

The

Key

to a Lasting

Relationship

By Alejandro Chávez

You might think that same-sex relationships don’t last. At least that is the unfortunate

misconception in our community. To my own surprise, the more I talk to

couples that I meet on the beach or just around town, the more I learn that there

are many of them who have been together for a long time. So I set out to ask -

What is the most important for a lasting relationship? Here are their responses:

“ Laughing together ”

“ Make sure that the person you’re with is your best friend ”

“ Honesty ”

Being able to share all of the fundamental

things that make you happy like travel, music, movies, etc

True and honest open communication -

and with that an open mind to hear and accept

“ Have fun together ”

“ Bring up problems when they come up and talk about them like adults ”

“ Prioritize each other and practice compromise a lot ”

We also have to take into consideration that there are many relationship types, such

as open, monogamous, etc. Many couples play by their own rules, they stick to

whatever works for them. A monogamous relationship may not be for everyone. I

am old fashioned though, I personally believe that if you’re going to be involved in

a romantic relationship, why be with two or more people at the same time? That is

one of the difficulties today, there is a lot of distraction and temptation all around.

People are afraid to commit to just one person, they like to keep options open and

play the field a bit.

Do older partners equal longer relationships?

A recent study by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law found that

longer relationship lengths, older age, and better relationship quality reduced the

chances of a couple’s breakup, no matter the gender. Statistically, older partners

improve the odds of staying together, mainly because they know what they want

out of a relationship.

NOT INTO BIG RESORTS?

USE PRIVATE VILLAS FOR YOUR WEDDING

Story and photos by Robert Schley

Villa Estrella Mar

Several key factors combine to make Puerto Vallarta a

wonderful city for gay and lesbian couples seeking to

hold a destination wedding, and it’s more than just the

sun and fun. Some of the factors are the same ones

that make Vallarta a stunning destination for all types

of vacation travel—easy air access to key American

and Canadian cities, a centrally-located airport near

to the city, great beaches and wonderful sunsets. But

one of the other key factors that work especially well

for gay couples is the abundance of beautiful private

luxury villas along the hillsides of Conchas Chinas and

the Mismaloya South Zone, making possible beautiful

wedding ceremonies away from the prying eyes of other

guests at large hotels and resorts. Another factor is the

well-rounded nightlife in the Zona Romantica that

attracts gay-wedding guests of all types, gay or straight.

Very few villa owners advertise their villas as event

locations, so it’s important for couples to use

knowledgeable local sources to locate and contract

the perfect event venue. Larissa Magee and Stephanie

Watts own Agave Villas, a villa-rental company based

in the Zona Romantica. “Booking a private villa for a

wedding is an incredible experience as it’s intimate,

private and allows the bridal couple to customize their

wedding to exactly what they are envisioning,” Magee

and Watts said. “However, there are a lot of aspects to

consider when planning a wedding at a private villa so

it’s important to have someone who is knowledgeable

and can help to guide the couple through this process

and find the villa that is perfect for them,” they added.

“overflow” lodging, especially hotels, can be very important.

Privacy is one of the main factors that many gay and

lesbian couples are looking for when planning their

destination weddings. Having so many private villas

and boutique hotels in and near Vallarta gives us huge

advantages over other destinations in Mexico.

Of course, not all private villas are suitable for holding

weddings, and most owners don’t permit any sort of

events with more than the guests who are staying on

their properties. But with so many villas in the area,

there are still quite a few that are both large enough

and have owners who encourage events as a way to fill

up their houses during slower parts of the year.

Weddings are held throughout the year here in Vallarta,

but there are certain months with higher numbers than

others. Couples are looking for that sweet spot of good

weather and less-than-high-season prices, so many

come in April/May and November/early December as

the two biggest windows of opportunity.

FACEBOOK / INSTAGRAM: @outandaboutpv

39

While most private villas are relatively small (4-5 bedrooms

with outdoor event space limited to 20-50 guests), there

are some that are larger and have event spaces that can

accommodate larger numbers.

• Casa Karma (oceanfront Conchas Chinas) has 8 bedrooms

and three large event terraces that can accommodate more

than 100 guests.

• Villa Estrella Mar (oceanfront Conchas Chinas) has 7

bedrooms and several indoor and outdoor spaces that

can accommodate 50-60 guests.

• Villa Verano and the Puerto Vallarta Beach Club (oceanfront

at the end of Los Muertos Beach) combined have 22 bedrooms

and a garden that can accommodate up to 100 guests)

• Villa Mandarinas (oceanfront Mismaloya) has 12 bedrooms and

two oceanfront terraces that can accommodate up to 75-100

guests.

• Villa La Mansión (oceanfront Garza Blanca) has 5 bedrooms

and a large oceanfront terrace that can accommodate up to

300 guests

• Villa Mia (oceanfront Mismaloya) has 12 bedrooms

and a large outdoor terrace that can accommodate up

to 100 guests

• Quinta Encantada (oceanview Conchas Chinas) has

12 bedrooms in 5 apartments and two outdoor pool

terraces that can accommodate up to 75 guests

• Villa Celeste (oceanfront Conchas Chinas) has 5

bedrooms and two outdoor terraces that can

accommodate 50-60 guests)

Since the vast majority of villa owners only rent their

properties for events if it includes a house rental of

between 3-7 nights, most couples thinking of using a

villa for their wedding venue plan to house their

immediate families there while looking to nearby

hotels or other villas to lodge other guests. Thus, the

proximity of the venue villa to other “overflow” lodging,

especially hotels, can be very important.

cercanas mientras buscan hoteles cercanos o Otras

Dr. Cinthia Becerra, a bioidentical hormone replacement specialist, is

the co-founder of UroVallarta, the first comprehensive urology clinic

in Mexico. She treats patients with hormone deficiency to significantly

improve their lifestyle.

Hormone production commonly starts to decline after 35 years of age.

When this happens, a man can experience several changes. The optimum

level is between 20 and 35-40 years old but after age of 45, production

decreases 50% to 60%. Then, there is an effect where testosterone

begins to convert to estrogen. When this happens, there are noticeable

changes in the body such as increase of belly and pectoral fat, or it takes

a lot of effort to lose weight. However, testosterone unbalance is not

exclusive to older age. There have also been cases with younger patients.

There are many symptoms from lack of testosterone but it’s easy to

replace it. Bioidentical hormones have been in the market for about

18 years and 5 years in Vallarta on the hands of Dr. Becerra, and has

treated both men and women. This hormone comes from the root of

yams, where they chemically extract a substance called diosgenin.

One of the benefits from bioidentical hormones is that dosage is highly

personalized. With synthetic hormones (the ones you get at the pharmacy),

it’s the same dosage for any person and they are 10x more powerful than

formulas that we produce. Bioidentical hormones are customized based

on various factors, including but not limited to body weight, clinical symptoms,

age, and activity levels. With time, the amount is adjusted depending

on how it is working, hence it is personalized. Every person is different.

Another benefit from bioidentical hormones is that they are

prepared for them to be used in short-term, within six months

maximum. Pharmacy hormones can last up to five years, but they have

a lot of preservatives that later are the ones that cause our allergies.

What is most important is that there’s also the benefit of feeling good

overall. One has energy, motivation and desire to do things that they

once enjoyed. At UroVallarta, Dr. Becerra prides herself for giving

excellent care to her patients. She listens to them, she provides the

necessary attention, proper time and support.

UroVallarta invests in technology to offer the same standard of quality than

any other place in the US. This includes lasers and noninvasive

therapies as treatment, and at a more accessible cost. The clinic performs

noninvasive surgeries where patients recover and leave on their own

feet. These surgeries can be for prostate, a vasectomy, circumcision,

or any other that patients don’t need to stay overnight to recover.

With transgender patients, they won’t feel the drastic change when going

through transition because the main advantage of bioidentical hormones

is that it doesn’t carry the risk of liver damage. These are more tolerable and

are safer overall. Patients also don’t suffer depressive changes, whereas with

synthetic hormones which get people to have strong psychological swaps.

Adverse effects are minimal since these are hormones that are most

compatible to the body. Synthetic hormones, or even worse,

anabolics that you see advertised in stores around town are 1oox more

powerful so the person taking these carry the risk of getting heart

attacks, clots In the brain, testicular shrinkage, etc., and there is also

no one to tell them what dosage to use. Another thing to

consider is that we don’t know if these are bootleg substances. Bottom

line: be safe, take care of yourself and always go with a professional.
