Dear Guests, Sporting enthusiasts
and Football-Fans ,
Welcome to a very special premiere!
For the first time, a top-class American
football game will take place in
Friedrichshafen. VfBFriedrichshafen is
extremely proud to host this exciting event
with a diverse supporting program.
As VfB Friedrichshafen and the ifm
Razorbacks Ravensburg are partners, we are
delighted to welcome two top-class teams
as our guests in our beautiful VfB Stadium.
One is the ifm Razorbacks Ravensburg from
the ERIMA Bundesliga and the other is
the team from the renowned Muhlenberg
College in the USA.

We would especially like to welcome our
guests from the USA: It‘s great that you‘re
stopping by Lake Constance on your European
tour. We wish you many

But how does VfB Friedrichshafen come
into play as the host? First of all, there‘s the
friendship between the two large, multisport
clubs, TSB 1847 Ravensburg, to which
the ifm Razorbacks belong as a football
department, and VfB
Friedrichshafen.

What is American Football about?
The goal of American Football is to advance
the ball and gain yards. In the course of
a game, two teams of eleven players each
try to get the game ball into the opponent’s
end zone or to score a field goal to gain
points.The team in possession of the ball
(The Offence ) can gain yards or a touchdown
or a field goal by throwing the ball or
running the ball. The defending team (Defence)
tries to prevent the offence from advancing
the ball and the defence are trying
to regain possession of the ball itself.There
is always either only the offence or only
the defence of a team on the pitch at one
time.When the offence does not manage to
advance the ball ten yards further up the
field after four attempts (downs), the possession
of the ball changes. Each player has
a certain position in which they play. Due to
the many different and versatile positions,
American Football can be played at least at
amateur level by both big or heavy players
as well as small or light players. The plays
of the offence and the defence are determined
by the head coach and the offence and
defence co-ordinators.
How to score points?
In American football, it’s rare to see a draw
because the rules allow for different ways
to gainpoints.
Touchdown
The ball is carried into the opposing end
zone or the ball is caught in the end zone.
The team gets six points for scoring a
touchdown.
Extra point
After a touchdown, the offensive team has
the opportunity to kick the ball from the 3
meter line through the goal frame. As with
soccer , the ball has to be kicked through
the two vertical goalposts, but unlike soccer,
the ball has to be kicked over the crossbar.
If this succeeds, you get 1 point. This is
also known as PAT (Point After Touchdown).
Two Point Conversion
Alternatively, after a touchdown instead of
kicking, the offence can also try to carry or
throw the ball from the 3 meter line into the
end zone. Since this is more difficult than
the kick, you get 2 points for this.
Field Goal
If a team hasn’t gain enough yards for a new
first down or touchdown or the time is running
out, there is the possibility to kick the
ball through the opponent‘s goal poles from
any point in the field. You get 3 points for a
successful field goal.
Safety
Safety is the opportunity for the Defence
to score points. For this, the defence must
bring the opposing quarterback to the
ground (sack) in the opponents end zone.
This situation is rather rare, but is worth 2
points.

Facts about the opponent
Muhlenberg College, a prestigious
college on the US East Coast, plays in the
NCAA Division III and is known for its strong
defense and teamwork. In 2024, the „Mules,“
as the team is affectionately known, were
ranked 21st in the Division III preseason polls.
The Muhlenberg Mules football program was
founded in 1900.

Quarterback (QB):
Playmaker and leader of the offense –
he receives the ball from the center and
decides whether to shoot, run, or hand off.
Running Back:
He often receives the ball from the
quarterback and runs with it.
Wide Receiver:
Fast players who run long routes and
catch passes. Often, there are two or three
wide receivers on the field.
The goal of the offense in
American football is to
gain yardage and
ultimately score points – either
through a touchdown (6 points) or
a field goal (3 points). To do this,
they attempt to advance the ball
at least 10 yards on consecutive
plays within four downs in order to secure
four more downs and continue
toward the end zone.
Tight End:
Can block like a lineman or catch like a receiver.
Offensive Line (O-Line):
Five big players who protect the quarterback and
block running lanes: Center: Gives the ball to the QB (snap) and blocks.
Guards (LG & RG): Left and right of the center.
Tackles (LT & RT): Left and right outside, protecting especially on passing plays.

the gossetts
two generations for one line
After Alex Gossett came to Ravensburg in 2024
as defensive line and special teams coach, he
followed his father, who was in charge of the
Upper Swabian offensive line during the 2023
season. The plan for 2025 were therefore already
in the works.
Both coaches are returning to Ravensburg,
at least temporarily. While Alex Gossett will
continue to be responsible for the defensive line
and special teams, his father, Mike Gossett, will
coach the offensive line for a few months, supporting
his former player and current offensive
coordinator, Jake Suggett.
Looking back on last season, Alex Gossett is particularly
proud of the significantly improved
defensive statistics. More than triple the number
of QB sacks compared to the 2023 season
speaks for itself. The Razorbacks‘ organization
was also an important factor for him. „I was
treated like a family member in Ravensburg
from day one, and everyone helped each other
improve during the season,“ he says, summing
up his first experience in Germany.
In 2025, he will be on the sidelines as a coach
alongside his father. „I started coaching at the
age of 21 and have learned a lot from my father.
Since then, we‘ve both naturally developed. But
I admire the joy and enthusiasm he brings to his
teams and am already looking forward to him
being a part of the Razorbacks in 2025.“
