From collaboration to innovation: Titan Enterprises
& RWC partner on breakthrough dispense solution
ince designing their
Sfirst beverage flowmeter
in the early 1990s, Titan
Enterprises, a leading UK
manufacturer of liquid flow
measurement solutions, has
had a long-standing supplier
relationship with John
Guest, part of the RWC’s
family of brands.
Starting out in 1949 as
Reliance Manufacturing
Company Pty Ltd (RMC)
with a drive to transform
industry, RWC was later
born from the desire to
challenge convention. A
major landmark for the
company came in 2018
with the acquisition of John
Guest and its globally renowned push-fit brands.
Titan’s NSF-Approved beverage meter, 800-series
turbine flowmeters, and the Atrato ® ultrasonic
flowmeter range all incorporate John Guest
connectors, which are extensively used in the food
and beverage industry for their specialised ‘push-toconnect’
solutions.
In 2023, following years of evolving innovation since
the launch of JG PolarClean by John Guest in 2010,
RWC teamed up with Titan Enterprises to deliver an
exciting solution for the beverage industry. A mutual
customer discussion sparked the R&D collaboration,
Futamura UK commits to
further UK investment
ollowing significant investment in
Frecent years, in both machinery
and site facilities, Futamura announces
today a further £15 million project
in its Wigton-based site to drive
step changes in its sustainability
and performance. This noteworthy
investment will
lead to emission
reductions,
energy efficiency
improvements
and a decrease
in their product’s
environmental
footprint.
The manufacturer,
who employs
270 people and
has been based
in Wigton for
over 90 years,
manufactures
renewable flexible
packaging films
that are derived
from woodpulp.
Futamura
fosters a culture for sustainability
and innovation, their NatureFlex
packaging films being certified for
both home and industrial composting
at end-of-life to support a reduction in
packaging waste.
The new investment will enable
a significant step change in the
company’s drive towards net zero
and notably reduce their emissions.
The project, internally called WSA
will divert waste gasses from the
production process to generate a
valuable raw
material via an
oxidation process.
Heat generated as
a byproduct of the
chemical reaction
will then be used
to generate steam,
the main energy
utilised in the
production process.
Once operational,
this asset will
generate 15% of
the total energy
requirement of
the Futamura
site. As a result,
the packaging
manufacturer
will also be able
to reduce the amount of natural gas
bought from the grid, reducing carbon
emissions and improving the footprint
of its products.

as users were already pairing
RWC’s PolarClean pushfit
connectors alongside
Titan’s Beverage meters in
beer dispensing systems.
However, integrating the
two products required
additional modifications
– introducing cost and
complexity to a customer’s
installation. Together, RWC
and Titan set out to change
that.
To simplify installation and
enhance efficiency, RWC and
Titan began a partnership
that led Titan to leverage
its expertise in turbine
technology and design,
while RWC contributed
its innovative tooling capabilities. The aim of the
collaborative project was to provide a streamlined,
state-of-the-art single unit for beer dispensing systems
by fully integrating Titan’s turbine flow technology
within RWC’s pioneering PolarClean connector.
The primary challenge was fitting the turbine into the
PolarClean tube/connector without compromising
either system. Through workshops, prototyping
and design, the teams developed a modified
version of RWC’s straight PolarClean union. SLA
(stereolithography apparatus) 3D-printed models
were used to create prototypes, which were then
tested and calibrated by Titan before customer trials.
Once the final design was validated, RWC developed
the injection moulding tool for the PolarClean
body, while Titan managed the sensor and turbine
technology. After minor modifications, the first units
were shipped to customers for final performance
validation.
The partnership resulted in a fully integrated
innovative solution for the beverage industry: the
JG PolarClean system uses ‘tube-in-tube’ technology
to ensure beer is kept extra cold and conditioned
from the keg to the beer font, even without the need
for a cellar. Featuring a standard 3-wire connector,
this state-of-the-art product simplifies beer dispense
system installations. The JG PolarClean Coaxial
Flow Meter accurately measures liquid flow enabling
system users to monitor demand or supply usage in
coaxial cooling systems.

device for your OEM application, please contact

INDUSTRY COMPANY OF THE MONTH
Pasta with freshness and
simplicity at the core
Food and Drink Matters is proud to
announce that Emilia’s Crafted Pasta has
been chosen as our Industry Company of
the Month
Emilia’s Crafted
Pasta was
established
in 2016. Founder
Andrew Macleod
created the company
with the vision
of bringing fresh
authentic pasta to
the UK. Highlighting
the traditional way
pasta is produced
and eaten in Italy and challenging the idea of
pasta as an afterthought.
Now, almost nine years later, Emilia’s Crafted
Pasta has grown to five restaurant locations in
the capital and a new retail line which promises
to bring the famous
Emilia’s experience
to homes across the
country.
Emilia’s Crafted
Pasta was born from
Andrew’s frustration
at the poor quality of
pasta dishes typically
served in the UK,
“I was very
disappointed with
how pasta was done. It was never fresh. It was
usually microwaved or frozen with pre-packed
sauces, additives and preservatives. So, I was
on a mission to bring proper Italian pasta to
London.”
of cooks.
This frustration
led to a core ethos
Emilia's follows
to this day. The
company prides itself
on preparing fresh
pasta daily, made
every morning and
cooked with a respect
for the tradition and
techniques passed
down by generations
The company’s restaurants are just one part of
the business though. In January 2025, Emilia’s
launched its premium pasta retail line into
retail. This new product line aims to bring
authentic, high quality
Italian pasta into
consumer’s homes.
Taking the awardwinning
Emilia’s pasta
experiences out of the
restaurant and into the
home kitchen.
Emilia’s retail products
are made exclusively
from 100% Italian
durum wheat and
pure mountain
water sourced the Lattari mountains – key
elements that contribute to its P.G.I (Protected
Geographical Indication) certification. This
European designation ensures the pasta is
authentically produced in its region of origin
and meets strict quality and tradition standards,
all while upholding sustainable practices.
The company has very strict rules on
production too. Most supermarket pastas are
what's known as oven dried; but Emilia’s pasta
is naturally dried for between 9 to 18 hours.
This ensures the nutrition is not burned but
preserved. Combining these elements, Emilia’s
goes as close as possible to the natural process;
which in turn creates a superior product overall.
Emilia’s retail products remain authentic not
only in production but also in variety. Including
products like rigatoni, a slightly curved, tubularshaped
pasta with square ends, originating from
Rome. Bucatini, a thick spaghetti-like pasta
with a hole running through; and casarecce,
a short, twisted pasta shape with its origins
in Sicily. The company also packs its pasta in
100% recyclable, paper-made material with no
plastic window.
After serving over one million bowls of pasta
in its restaurants, Emilia’s shift into retail is a
conscious decision to take that accumulated
knowledge and apply it to the retail space. We
asked Andrew what this shift meant for the
future of the company, “We want to take all
we have learnt from the restaurants and bring
retail products to market that we’re proud of,
that align with the values of Emilia. We want
to re-create Emilia's experience at home. In
our restaurants, everything is made fresh daily,
with natural ingredients and no additives or
preservatives. So, we wanted to give people
that in their homes. I think that resonates with
consumers because that's how Italian pasta
should be done. That's how they do it in Italy.”

50g protein dough
GymDough will be
exhibiting at Lunch!
2025 at the Excel London
on the 24-25 September at
Stand SU4.
Boasting the highest protein
cookie dough on the market,
GymDough has managed to
create a high protein, macro
friendly, edible raw cookie
dough that is gluten free.
What makes GymDough
stand out is that health is
always prioritised which is
why the use of synthetic sweeteners is limited
and minimally processed, whole ingredients are
preferred, including organic oats and almond
powder, as well as fairtrade cocoa. Gymdough
is also super versatile and can be eaten straight
from the tub, heated in the microwave, used to
make cookies, pancakes and more. With each
tub containing a whopping 50 grams of protein,
whether you’re a long-distance runner looking
to refuel after a run, a weight lifter tired of plain
porridge and protein shakes, or simply someone
who wants to enjoy a tub of cookie dough
without feeling guilty, GymDough is the one.
Think of your favourite chocolate bar
transformed into high protein cookie dough!
So far, customers have been loving the range
that includes four flavours plus two seasonal
flavours such as Peanut Butter Cup, Cherry
Bakewell, Chocolate Hazelnut Praline, and
Original Choc Chip which
is Madagascan vanilla
cookie dough, packed with
rich 70% dark chocolate
and milk chocolate chips,
vanilla syrup and a pinch of
sea salt.
“Original Choc Chip is
delicious, exactly like cookie
dough,” stated one customer.
Another said “Great taste.
Almost can’t believe the
macros.”
With reviews like these, it’s no surprise that
GymDough has been awarded high trust
scores for their company ethos and products’
transparency and authenticity. With over 87
verified reviews from happy customers, as well
as earning gold and bronze
awards, GymDough is also
a Top 5% Trending brand,
ranked by customers with
a monthly record of 20
verified reviews.
Free from egg and wheat,
each cookie dough pot has
balanced macros including
slow-release carbs that are
low sugar and high in fibre.
This versatile snack can be
baked as cookies, eaten raw,
or even transformed into
pre/post workout snacks like protein balls or
pancakes!
GymDough is a great example that healthy
eating doesn’t have to mean boring chicken
and broccoli. Even better,
it’s incredibly satisfying and
filling – unlike many socalled
‘healthy’ supermarket
snacks that leave you hungry
again within 30 minutes.

PRINT & PACKAGING MATTERS
Minimalism, materiality, and the
future of flexible packaging
When we think of the term
‘minimalist packaging’, we’re
often thinking in visual terms
– clean lines, muted colour palettes,
pared-back layouts. But for brands and
packaging converters alike, the real shift
goes much deeper. Minimalism isn’t a
design trend; it’s a design principle. And
at its core is a question every business
must answer: how can we do more with
less?
At Parkside, we believe this mindset
aligns perfectly with what flexible
packaging has always set out to
do; use less material to achieve
more functionality. But to meet the
expectations of today’s minimalist movement,
packaging must go further still: it must be
simpler, lighter, smarter, and circular by design.
Why minimalist doesn’t mean minimal
performance
The appeal of minimalist packaging is obvious.
Consumers associate simplicity with trust.
Stripped-back designs project confidence,
transparency, and ease but as this aesthetic
becomes more deeply intertwined with
sustainability narratives, it raises the bar for
packaging functionality.
This is where flexible packaging excels. As a
format, it already uses demonstrably less raw
material than many rigid alternatives. It takes
up less space in transit, and when designed
correctly, creates little waste at end-of-life. Yet
it can still deliver high barrier performance,
extended shelf life, and shelf appeal – all in one
solution. Flexible packaging is, in many ways,
the physical embodiment of minimalist thinking:
no excess, just efficiency.
More than less: circularity without compromise
Minimalist design places a strong emphasis
on sustainability, but getting the materials mix
right matters just as much as reducing the visual
noise. With the minimisation requirements in
the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation
(PPWR) set to make excess packaging a liability,
brands now face legal and financial pressure
to deliver snug-fit, material-efficient
formats. That means cutting weight,
avoiding unnecessary components, and
proving it. That’s why the industry is
moving beyond vague claims of ‘ecofriendly’
and towards material strategies
that are measurable, proven, and ready
for the realities of the waste stream.
At Parkside, we’ve seen this firsthand
with our Recoflex range, an
innovation platform built around both
paper-based and recyclable plastic
monomaterials. The idea is simple: give
brands an alternative to conventional
laminates without compromising on
product protection or print quality.
In the Recoflex paper range, for example, FSCcertified
fibre meets proprietary water-based
barrier coatings to offer moisture, grease, and
oxygen resistance that rivals plastic, but in a
fully kerbside-recyclable pack. It’s a minimalist
design in every sense: less plastic, fewer layers,
and one clear message to consumers.
Designing for restraint, delivering on practicality
The challenge with any minimalist pack is
finding the right balance between form and
function. Strip away too much, and you risk
losing usability, durability or shelf impact.
Too much taken away could even risk product
damage and potential safety issues. But get it
right, and you create a pack that’s not only
resource-efficient but also enhances the brand
experience.
That’s why our innovation isn’t limited to
materials. Technologies like Parkscribe laser
scribing enable built-in easy-open and reclose
features – without needing added components
like zips, caps, or tear strips. That means fewer
parts, fewer processes, and fewer compromises
on recyclability.
It also means accessibility. True minimalism
should serve everyone, not just those with
strong grip or perfect dexterity. Inclusive
packaging design is too often an afterthought,
but in our view, it’s fundamental to what good
design looks like in 2025.
Minimal packaging, maximum
systems thinking
Minimalist design can’t be judged
on aesthetics alone. A beautiful pack
that can’t be recycled, that creates
excess food waste, or that clogs up an
automated line is not minimalist. It’s
just under-engineered.
What’s needed now is systemslevel
thinking. Packaging that
delivers across the full chain, from
manufacturing and transport through
to retail, use, and end-of-life. It’s why
we talk about ‘resource efficiency’
rather than just material savings. The
right pack doesn’t just look good on
shelf, it reduces damage in transit, supports high
line speeds, avoids overpacking, and simplifies
disposal.
Minimalism, in this sense, is not about taking
away. It’s about designing with intention,
purpose and restraint, where every element is
considered, and nothing is included without
justification.
At Parkside, we know that delivering minimalist
packaging isn’t about taking a standard
format and dialling back the design. It’s about
understanding the specific needs of the product,
the brand, and the consumer – and building
a solution around that. That’s why we’ve
invested in our Creative Suite and Laboratory
Testing Facility, giving brands access to highquality
prototyping, performance testing, and
material innovation under one roof. Whether
it’s evaluating a new substrate, testing barrier
performance, or refining a reseal feature, we
work side-by-side with our partners to create
minimalist packaging that performs just as well
as it presents.
The next chapter of minimalist design
As consumers gravitate towards cleaner
aesthetics and clearly articulated brand values,
brands will continue to look for packaging that
supports that message. Flexible packaging is
uniquely positioned to help deliver that, visually,
operationally, and environmentally.
For our team, minimalism isn’t about
aesthetic purity. It’s about engineering
elegance. Lighter, simpler, smarter
packaging that cuts through noise, not
just on a CAD render in the design
studio, but across the entire packaging
lifecycle. Because when minimalism is
more than a style choice, it becomes a
principle - it has the power to reshape
not only how packaging looks, but
what it achieves.

packaging innovations, visit:

PRINT & PACKAGING MATTERS
3 flexo printing inks: Advantages & disadvantages
Not sure which ink to use for your
flexo printing application? In this
article, we talk you through the pros
and cons of three of the most popular
and useful types of flexo printing ink.
But before you choose your ink…
There are several factors to think about
before you get started. These include
the nature of your final product, the
speed you need for your printing, and
chemical issues, the most important
consideration being the substrate you're
using.
To get the best results from your
printing press, you'll always need to choose an
ink with full compatibility with your chosen
substrate.
1. Water-based ink
Water-based ink is one of the most cost-effective
options; however, they may have problems
drying quickly without assistance. These inks
are best used on absorbent substrates, where
they will dry well without the need for complex
curing machinery.
Sometimes, water-based ink has a reputation for
producing a poor-quality finish but this tends
to be a result not of the ink itself, but of other
factors. These include using water-based ink on
an unsuitable substrate, where its high surface
tension causes poor absorption. In some cases a
pre-treatment such as Corona is recommended
for synthetic substrates which will improve print
quality.
2. Solvent-based ink
Solvent-based inks are made up of alcohols and
acetates, and have a much lower surface tension
than water-based ink. It dries well, and offers
a fast printing solution. Solvent-based inks can
be dried in conventional curing ovens, and are
quick-drying.
Solvent-based inks work well on non-absorbent
substrates, including foils, metallic wrappings
and plastic bags. Both water-based and solventbased
inks are classified as volatile inks. This
means that they contain a liquid component that
evaporates, leaving its image behind to mark the
substrate. This poses a health and environmental
risk with many solvent inks, as the evaporation
process releases volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) into the atmosphere.
3. UV- Ultraviolet and electron beam inks
Unlike volatile inks, these inks are designated
as being energy curable. This means that they
dry through intermolecular bonding, leaving the
ink solidified on the surface of the substrate –
without releasing VOCs.
These inks will only dry when exposed to UV or
LED UV light or electron beams in a specialised
curing oven. This increases the infrastructure
costs of working with these inks, as, you’ll
need to invest in equipment which contains
the appropriate drying system. But they are
still the most sustainable option for printing
non-absorbent surfaces. UV inks have a high
viscosity and are often used in food packaging.
They achieve a crisp, extremely high-quality
finish, delivering an excellent ROI even if their
cost per ml is higher than volatile inks.
Choosing your ink
Deciding on the right ink to use can make or
break your printing project. Our free Guide

responsibly manage this procedure in the most
sustainable way possible.

W
ith their tasty biscuits being
sold in over more than 41
countries worldwide, this
customer needed to update their
facility in order to meet the everincreasing
demand for their sweets.
In this specific case, the customer had
two lines coming together just before
having to cross a critical logistic
pathway, after which they each had
to split again in order to get to their
separate packaging machines.
Watch video: www.youtube.com/
watch?v=KRWJkJ-qi24
With an existing facility that’s already
running various other projects,
it’s always tough to find the most
efficient way to increase the number
of lines without sacrificing safety
and accessibility. Especially so if the
product being transported is unstable
and fragile, like these biscuits.
As the customer has already had many
positive experiences with AmbaFlex
with the capability to deliver significant benefits
to a wide range of businesses. These include
cost reductions, increased efficiency, quality
improvements, and reduced downtime and
turnaround, all of which can deliver a healthy
return on the investment in these technologies.
Visitors will be able to see the latest innovations
from an impressive line-up of over 350 exhibitors,
comprising over 1,500 brands. These exhibiting
companies will be showcasing their latest
cutting-edge solutions for the full spectrum of the
manufacturing industry, including pharmaceuticals,
food and beverages, building materials and
suppliers, pet care, and microbrewers and distillers.
Supported by an insightful seminar programme
featuring keynote speakers from leading brands,
everyone can gain actionable insights from
industry leaders on topics like sustainability, smart
manufacturing, and operational efficiency.
There will also be a Live Demonstration Theatre,
where you can see brand-new product launches
products they trusted them to come
up with the best possible solution
and they found it in the patented
Portal ONE. This solution solves two
problems in one go: first, it creates a
portal function which will keep the
critical logistics paths open and safe.
Second, using only one belt along
the whole path, it cuts the number of
needed transfers by half. Removing
those transfers that would otherwise
be suspended up in the air and hard
to reach, ensuring a safe and stable
journey of the products.
Taking the portal one solution and
customizing it to our customer’s needs
resulted in a one of a kind three-way
portal solution, made to solve the
customer’s challenges in the most
efficient way possible.
After it elevates the two streams of
biscuits with only a single dual-lane
spiral, the two streams separate at the
upper end where they each continue
to their own spiral to transport them
down again and deliver them to their
respective packaging machine.
Creating one three-way portal instead
of a traditional portal system for each
line cuts down on total costs and floor
space used. The end result, a happy
customer with an efficient and safe
upgrade to their facility.

Where can we find food
that restores what our
modern diets have lost?
I
n Ayurveda, there
is a saying that
goes, “When diet
is wrong, medicine is
of no use. When diet is
correct, medicine is of
no use.” But what are
the implications when
even a well-balanced
diet no longer provides
the nutrition our bodies
require? It’s no secret
that the nutritional
value of our food has dropped significantly with
studies showing alarming discoveries that the
food on supermarket shelves have 38% lower
nutrients since 1950 (and it’s likely this number
is increasing), one of the lesser known but hugely
important compounds that used to be readily
available from our food is Ergothioneine, a
vital amino acid derived from Fungi which has
drastically declined in recent
decades due to the rampant
use of fungicides in farming.
At the same time, we’re seeing
a rise of recommendations
around primarily plantbased
diets such as the
Mediterranean diet and
hunter-gather inspired
approaches like the Paleo diet.
With research undertaken
by organisations like The
Wildbiome Project showing
that foraged diets can have a
positive impact on reducing
blood pressure, blood sugar
and inflammation.
Where can we find food that
restores what our modern
diets have lost?
This is where fungi become a
potent ally in the quest for better nourishment.
Nutritionally dense and incredibly versatile,
mushrooms offer a broad and rare combination
of proteins, fibres and important minerals like
selenium, copper, zinc and potassium – as well as
being an essential source of vitamin D2, vitamin
B complex, hydroxybenzoic acids (HBAs) and
hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs), terpenes, sterols,
and β-glucans. Beyond their vitamin and mineral
content, they’re rich in beneficial compounds
like non-digestible oligosaccharides (NDOs) and
ergothioneine, a unique antioxidant that may
play a key role in gut health by supporting the
microbiome.
Mushrooms like Hericium erinaceus (Lion’s
mane), Ganoderma species (such as Reishi),
and Lentinula edodes (Shiitake) are recognised
as functional foods thanks to their impressive
ability to support overall health and prevention
of disease. These varieties offer a wide range of
therapeutic properties
from antioxidant and
anti-inflammatory
effects to cholesterollowering,
antidiabetic,
antimicrobial, and even
anticancer potential.
They’ve also been
shown to help regulate
blood pressure, boost
immunity, and support
bone health.
Given their wide-ranging health benefits and
impressive nutrient profile, mushrooms could
and perhaps should be a key player in helping us
reclaim some of the nutritional value that’s been
lost in our modern food system.
But is the answer really as simple as consuming
more mushrooms? Simple, yes. Realistic, not so
much. While the nutritional
profile of mushrooms
is excellent and our
relationship with fungi is
deep rooted in human nature,
it’s unrealistic to expect them
to feature in every meal in
today’s world.
How do we return to the
old ways of nourishing our
bodies when access to whole,
local and nutritionally-dense
organic foods aren’t equally
available to everyone?
So much of our modern
food system is built around
convenience, speed, and mass
production that it’s easy to
forget this wasn’t always
the norm. It pulled us in
with promises of simplicity,
and most of us followed, unaware of what we
might be trading away. And while there’s growing
awareness around whole foods, organic farming,
and seasonal eating, the reality is that organic
produce is a luxury that many can’t afford.
Similarly, in an ideal world, perhaps we’d forage
for our food but for most part, time, knowledge,
and access to wild spaces make this difficult or
even impossible to commit to.
However, there are glimmers of hope on the
menu, and indeed other means of benefitting
from local organic produce in a cost effective
and efficient way. One that reconnects us with
nature’s pantry while recognising the struggles we
face as modern folk in today’s society.
A meeting point between ancient herbal traditions
and modern convenience?
Tinctures (an extract of dried organic matter
that has been extracted into alcohol and water)
represent a meeting
point between ancient
herbal traditions and
modern convenience,
a way to reclaim lost nourishment in a form that
fits our fast-paced lives. This method offers a
practical, potent, and accessible way to integrate
the therapeutic power of medicinal mushrooms
into everyday life. Just a few drops added to
your morning tea, smoothie, or glass of water
can deliver the full spectrum of benefits found
in mushrooms without requiring a shift to an
entirely mushroom-based diet.
In a world of misinformation and mass
production, where can we find top-quality
tinctures?
At Bristol Fungarium, every bottle starts with
128g of fresh mushrooms, grown on our organic
mushroom farm in Somerset. The second step
of the process is to dry our mushrooms in
an infrared dehydrator at 34 degrees before
macerating and adding to an organic alcohol
and two RSO water distillations to make our
1:4 triple extracts. This means the ‘1:4’ is the
concentration of our final product after triple
extraction, i.e. the ratio of dried mushroom
to extracted liquid. Each of our 50ml bottles
contains 1g of dried mushroom for every 4ml of
tincture – a highly concentrated extract.
