foreword

Dear Football fans and Guests,

t‘s finally that time again - the 2025 GFL season is starting, and

we‘re very excited to celebrate the first home game of the ifm

Razorbacks with you! We‘re especially proud that this day is

dedicated to our partnership. It’s ifm Gameday!

As a long-standing sponsor of the ifm Razorbacks, the team

is particularly close to our hearts. What defines American

football – team spirit, strategy, commitment, and enthusiasm

– are values that we at ifm also live by every day. „Do What You

Love“ is not only our official ifm claim, but also a true promise.

We support people and teams in passionately doing what they

love – just like the ifm Razorbacks on the field.

An exciting game awaits us today. We face the Schwäbisch

Hall Unicorns, a multiple time German champion – a strong

opponent who will demand a lot from our team. But

one thing is certain: The ifm Razorbacks will take

to the field with passion, courage, and fighting

spirit – and we are right behind them.

With that in mind, I wish everyone an exciting,

fair, and thrilling football evening – and the

ifm Razorbacks a successful start to the

season!

Best regards

game rules

What is American Football about?

The goal of American Football is to advance

the ball and gain yards. In the course of

a game, two teams of eleven players each

try to get the game ball into the opponent’s

end zone or to score a field goal to gain

points. The team in possession of the ball

(The Offence ) can gain yards or a touchdown

or a field goal by throwing the ball or

running the ball. The defending team (Defence)

tries to prevent the offence from advancing

the ball and the defence are trying

to regain possession of the ball itself. There

is always either only the offence or only

the defence of a team on the pitch at one

time. When the offence does not manage to

advance the ball ten yards further up the

field after four attempts (downs), the possession

of the ball changes. Each player has

a certain position in which they play. Due to

the many different and versatile positions,

American Football can be played at least at

amateur level by both big or heavy players

as well as small or light players. The plays

of the offence and the defence are determined

by the head coach and the offence and

defence co-ordinators.

How to score points?

In American football, it’s rare to see a draw

because the rules allow for different ways

to gainpoints.

Touchdown

The ball is carried into the opposing end

zone or the ball is caught in the end zone.

The team gets six points for scoring a

touchdown.

Extra point

After a touchdown, the offensive team has

the opportunity to kick the ball from the 3

meter line through the goal frame. As with

soccer , the ball has to be kicked through

the two vertical goalposts, but unlike soccer,

the ball has to be kicked over the crossbar.

If this succeeds, you get 1 point. This is

also known as PAT (Point After Touchdown).

Two Point Conversion

Alternatively, after a touchdown instead of

kicking, the offence can also try to carry or

throw the ball from the 3 meter line into the

end zone. Since this is more difficult than

the kick, you get 2 points for this.

Field Goal

If a team hasn’t gain enough yards for a new

first down or touchdown or the time is running

out, there is the possibility to kick the

ball through the opponent‘s goal poles from

any point in the field. You get 3 points for a

successful field goal.

Safety

Safety is the opportunity for the Defence

to score points. For this, the defence must

bring the opposing quarterback to the

ground (sack) in the opponents end zone.

This situation is rather rare, but is worth 2

points.

good to know

Facts about the opponent

The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, one of the most successful

teams in German American football, have demonstrated

their dominance in recent years. With five German Bowl

victories (2011, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2022) and continuous division

titles since 2011, they are among the best teams in

the GFL South. Of particular note is the new US offensive

duo: Quarterback Josh Taylor and wide receiver Austin

Brock, who have been working together for over five

years and are responsible for explosive plays.

The two teams last met on June 29, 2024. The Schwäbisch

Hall Unicorns narrowly won 31-28 at home. This

encounter promises to be an exciting game.

stats & facts

headlines from the games from week 2

Invaders win rain battle

It was an evening in which not only the

Hildesheim Invaders showed character,

but also the nearly 1,000 spectators in the

stands. In persistent, at times heavy rain,

the Invaders secured their first victory of the

2025 GFL season at their home stadium, Helios

Field, with a convincing 28-7 victory over

the Straubing Spiders.

VS

28 : 7

Second win for Pforzheim

The Pforzheim Wilddogs have also won

their second game in the German Football

League (GFL). The newly promoted team

defeated the Saarland Hurricanes 24-15. In a

close game, it was ultimately the Wilddogs’

concentration that won the day. Head Coach

Michael Lang’s team made fewer mistakes.

VS

15 : 24

Rebels without points

A sentence with an X – that’s roughly how

you could describe it from the Berlin Rebels’

perspective. The good thing about yesterday’s

game was their defense – but their

offense was completely shaky. There’s not

much to report, as the Berlin team didn’t

score any points. The Potsdam Royals were

different. The visitors’ defense was solid;

they’ve done their homework.

VS

Dresden pulled away in the third quarter

In front of approximately 1,272 spectators,

the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes lost 31-58 to the

Dresden Monarchs, but led 24-21 at halftime

and were without several regular players.

Among others, CJ Davis, Chandler Smith,

Benedikt Englmann, and Henrik Wolk were

unavailable for the Schleswig-Holstein team.

Kiel’s head coach Timo Zorn commented

accordingly after the match: “The team responded

well to the poor start in Potsdam

last week. I’m very proud of that. They fought

hard. In the second half, there were too many

mistakes overall, which Dresden, as a strong,

well-coached team, took advantage of.”

VS

31 : 58

Samuel Grinfeld decides

In early summer temperatures, the

Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns played a thrilling

game against the Munich Cowboys in their

first game of the 2025 GFL season in front

of 1,689 spectators. The two teams remained

evenly matched until the final quarter, but at

the final whistle, the Unicorns narrowly prevailed,

28:27.

VS

28 : 27

A Big Number Too Big

With a decisive 63-0 victory against the Paderborn

Dolphins, the New Yorker Lions return

to Braunschweig from their first away

game of the 2025 GFL season.

interview

with Mike and Alex gossett

Mike, how was it coming back to Ravensburg? Has much changed?

Mike Gossett: It was an absolute joy to come backto Ravensburg. My wife, Tiffany, and I had a

great time and enjoyed the people and the traveling. The coaching staff has made positive steps,

and I love working with Coach Jake, whom I recruited in 2023.

What’s it like coaching alongside each other? Do you always see eye to eye?

Alex Gossett: We coached together before, when I was 21. It’s fun to coach together again,

and there’s always a competitive spirit between us.

Mike Gossett: Coaching with Alex has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. I love

watching him grow as a coach and colleague.

What fascinates you the most about working with the offensive and defensive lines?

Mike Gossett: Offensive linemen are special people because they play for the team and rarely

receive individual accolades.I love

working with these selfless players

Alex Gossett: I love the small body

movements that can affect everything.

Defensive line is like

wrestling, and I’m detail-oriented,

which gives me plenty of opportunities

to correct those small

movements.

What are the most important

technical fundamentals for

O-linemen and D-linemen, and

can anyone become a “lineman”?

Alex Gossett: Good footwork and

hand movements are crucial.

Almost anyone can become a

lineman if they’re fast and technically

skilled

Mike Gossett: I’m looking for selfless

and aggressive players with good

footwork and hand

placement.

Did you both play football in the USA, and if so, where?

Mike Gossett: I started at age 8 and played at Murray State University in Kentucky.

Alex Gossett: I started at age 10 or 11 and played at Benedictine College in Kansas

How do you make the linebacker positions appealing to children and young people?

Alex Gossett: Football offers an opportunity for people who wouldn’t fit into other sports to play

13

an important role. It’s about fostering selfishness and teamwork.

Mike Gossett: Football gives everyone the chance to be part of something and be valued.

How do you analyze opposing lines and adapt your strategy accordingly?

Mike Gossett: We identify what the defensive line does well and use technique and angles to

compensate for their advantages.

Alex Gossett: Defensive linemen must react quickly to the offensive linemen’s movements and

utilize their own strengths.

Where do you see yourself as a coach in the next few years?

Mike Gossett: I’m nearing the end of my coaching career and want to help others launch their

careers.

Alex Gossett: I enjoy what I do and am excited to see where the journey takes me.

How would you describe your coaching philosophy?

Alex Gossett: Anyone can improve with the right effort and coaching. I want to be a

resource for those who want to improve.

Mike Gossett: My goal is to maximize the players’ abilities while having fun

What could we have done better in the game against Straubing?

Mike Gossett: Regardless of the outcome, there are always things that can be improved,

such as communication and effort.

Alex Gossett: We’re always analyzing what we can do better and working to improve

Mike, will you be returning to America soon, and can we hope to see you back as

a coach with the ifm Razorbacks?

Mike Gossett: I’ll be returning in mid-June as a tourist and hope to continue to be part of

the community.

devo-team

current report

Another successful start to our DEVO team’s season. After 7 games the DEVO team is

6-1, currently in second in the league standing behind Black Forest Foxes.

Game Results:

vs Filderstadt Mustangs Sieg 34-0

@ Offenburg Miners Sieg 30-7

vs Esslingen Raccoons Sieg 34-7

@ Black Forest Foxes Niederlage 17-24

vs Badener Greifs Sieg 22-14

@ Stuttgart Silver Arrows Sieg 39-24

@ Filderstadt Mustangs Sieg 55-0

Player Development:

However for the DEVO team wins and losses do

not determine the success of the season. The

team is built to prepare players to make the

jump up to our GFL team. Numerous players

have made the jump, most notably Simon

Mayr, he was a consistent starter for the DEVO

team in the 2024 season. After a tremendous

off season and great pre-season with the DEVO

team he showed he was ready for the next

challenge. This ultimately led him to earning

a starting position on the GFL team at WR for

week 1 against Straubing. From Head Coach

Jake Suggett, “Our main goal is to continue to

develop players, this is our top priority. In order

to continue to have a successful GFL team we

need to develop. As GFL players start to retire

we need the next generation to be ready to take

that next step and fill in the shoes.” Preparing

the next generation has been successful with

the following players being moving up to the

GFL team since last season: Simon Mayr (WR),

Adrian Terwart (WR), Seraphin Stuparek (RB),

Tarek Schumacher (OL), Ben Schafheutle (OL),

Marc Bächstaedt (OL), Nils Wulf (DB), Fabian

Wohnhaas (DB), Alexander Eichinger (DL),

23

Jona Uekert (DB), Arne Tyman (LB), Monday

Okokhue (DL).

Remainder of the season:

With 5 games remaining in the season the

DEVO team still has a shot at winning the

league and securing automatic promotion

into the Baden-Württemberg Oberliga.

Head Coach Jake Suggett had this to say

about the remainder of the season, “We

have had a lot of guys get pulled up who

are ready to take the next step in their football

playing career. With that there will be

many of our guys who will need to step up

and show production on the field. Winning

the league and promotion is still obtainable

but by no means will it be easy. But I know

our guys are up for the challenge. Come

out and support the team!”

The remaining schedule for the team is as

follows:

31. Mai vs. Offensburg Miners // 15 Uhr Kick Off

15. Juni vs. Esslingen Raccoons // 15 Uhr Kick Off

22. Juni vs. Black Forest Foxes // 15 Uhr Kick Off

6. Juli vs. Badener Greifs // 15 Uhr Kick Off

26. Juli vs. Stuttgart Silver Arrows // 15 Uhr Kick
