AUGUST IN ROME

AUGUST IN ROME

Your guide to the

Eternal City’s hottest season

August in Rome brings a slower, sundrenched

rhythm to the Eternal City. With

many Romans heading to the coast for the

summer holidays, the streets of the capital

become quieter, the traffic eases, and a more

relaxed atmosphere settles in. While some

shops and local businesses may close, the

heart of the city stays very much alive—with

plenty of restaurants, rooftop bars, cultural

events, and hidden corners waiting to be

explored.

The peak of the month is Ferragosto,

celebrated on August 15th, a holiday rooted

in ancient Roman times and now a national

tradition. While the day itself sees many

Italians flocking to the beach, those who stay

in Rome will still find plenty of ways to enjoy

the occasion—and the whole month offers

opportunities to escape the heat, whether it’s

through underground sites, shady parks, or a

day trip to the seaside.

In this guide, you’ll find everything you need

to make the most of Rome in August: open

restaurants and bars, cool places to explore,

outdoor events, and nearby getaways. Just

remember: slow down, stay hydrated, and

take it all in. Summer in Rome is meant to

be savored.

AUGUST IN ROME: EXPLORE ROME’S UNDERGROUND SITES

August in Rome:

Explore Rome’s Underground Sites

With soaring temperatures this summer there is no place cooler to hide than in the

secret world beneath the streets of Rome. Explore the catacombs and crypts of the

city’s most significant monuments, and unearth some of Rome’s best kept treasures.

Basilica di San Clemente

Via Labicana, 95

Mon-Sat, 9am-12.30pm; 2pm-6pm; Sun 12pm-6pm

Entry fee: €10, reduced €5

Often overlooked by the nearby Colosseum, San Clemente is a

hidden gem that is definitely worth a visit. This three-tiered

complex consists of an 11th century Basilica that was built on top of

the pre-existing 4th century ”domus ecclesiae” (a secretive meeting room for early Christian

worshippers) of martyr San Clemente. Go deeper under the Church and you’ll find a vault from

the 3rd century AD. This Mitharic sanctuary consists of stone benches, surrounding an altar

that was used during Mitharic rituals, a mystery cult of Persian origin.

Colosseum Underground

Piazza del Colosseo, 1

Daily, 9am-7.15pm

Entry fee: €24

(Full Experience Undergrounds and Arena ticket)

Underneath the world’s largest amphitheatre lie the tunnels

and chambers which hosted the mechanisms that made the

spectacular battles of the Colosseum possible. The recently

discovered hypogeum, from the Greek word for “underground”, is a

labyrinth of rings that emulate the oval shape of the arena. Behind the scenes, a

vertical winch called a capstan was pushed by slaves to elevate lions, crocodiles

and bears into the arena. Walk in the footsteps of gladiators, with a tour group that

explores the underworld of the Colosseum.

Catacombs of

San Callisto

Via Appia Antica, 110/126

Thu-Tue: 2-7pm

Entry fee €7-10

Possibly Rome’s most famous catacomb,

this site extends almost 20 km and was

the burial place of more than 10 martyrs

and 16 popes. As the official catacombs

of the Roman Church, the crypt of the

popes was known as “the little Vatican”

and you can still see the Greek markings

“MPT” on two of them for “martyr.” You

can also see burial place of Saint Cecilia,

the patron saint of music, buried here

for five centuries until her remains were

transferred to a church in Trastevere.

Domitilla

Catacombs

Via delle Sette Chiese, 282

Mon, Wed-Sun 9am-12pm, 2pm-5pm

Entry fee €7-10

Rome has an array of underground tombs,

built as cemeteries for the Christian

and Catholic communities between the

2nd – 9th centuries AD. The Domitilla

Catacombs are the oldest burial networks

in the city and the only site to house real

ancient bones. The maze of underground

caves and vaults spread over three levels,

extending 30 meters into the ground and

reaching a total length of 17 km. Access

to the passageways is through a 4th

century subterranean basilica, which leads

to a fascinating 2nd century fresco of The

Last Supper.

Palazzo

Valentini

via Foro Traiano, 85

10am-7pm (closed on Tuesday)

Entry fee: €15, €9 reduced

Nestled between the great roundabout

of Piazza Venezia and the Trajan Forum,

you will find Palazzo Valentini. Underneath

this 16th century palace lie the Domus

Romane, the archeological remains of

homes belonging to the wealthy families

of Imperial Rome. Teams of experts

excavated through layers of Rome’s

rich history, and created this stunning

multimedia museum in 2010. The tour of

the Domus Romane is a mix of history and

wonder: exquisite relics of finely detailed

mosaic floors to colossal marble columns,

and vast kitchens to private saunas are

displayed beneath your feet.

Hadrian’s Crypt

(Mouth of Truth)

Piazza Bocca della Verità, 18

Mon-Sat, 10am-2pm, 3pm-5.30pm;

Sun 12pm – 5.30pm

Free entry

Escape the long line of visitors queuing

up to put their hand in The Mouth of

Truth by exploring Pope Hadrian’s Crypt.

The basilica shaped crypt is located

underneath Santa Maria in the Cosmedin

Church, in Piazza Bocca della Verità. It was

constructed in the 8th century to store the

relics taken from the catacombs by Pope

Adrian I. This small underground site is

definitely worth a visit. There is no entry

fee but a donation is suggested.

The Crypt of the

Capuchin Friars

Via Vittorio Veneto, 27

Daily, 9.30am-1.30pm;

2.30pm-6-30pm

Entry fee: €10, reduced €6.5

What you are we were; what we are you

will be” is the spooky reminder of the

inevitability of life that greets visitors upon

entering the Crypt. By far the eeriest site

in Rome, this Crypt is made up of the

bones of 4,000 Capuchin monks. After

visiting the convent and museum, walk

towards the dimly lit hallway, where a

multitude of messages are conveyed. This

spooky corner of the city is the ultimate

underground experience.

AUGUST IN ROME: STAY COOL IN ROME’S PARKS

August in Rome:

Stay Cool in Rome’s Parks

Rome is a big, busy city and while the streets will be quieter in August, it’s also a

great time to really relax under the shade in parks. Here are some of our favorites:

Parco degli Acquedotti

Via Lemonia, 256

The park, named after the ruins of ancient Roman

aqueducts that litter the space, lies between Via Appia

and Via Tuscolana,. If you’re a fan of Italian cinema, you

recognize it from films like Fellini’s La Dolce Vita or the

Oscar-winning The Great Beauty, where it was featured

prominently. It has a rustic, agricultural air to it, and it is still

used for grazing sheep and growing crops. The park is visited

by everyone, whether they be runners, readers, musicians, or dog

walkers.

Villa Borghese

Entrances at Porta Pinciana,

Piazzale Flaminio,

Viale delle Belle Arti, Via Raimondi and Via

Mercadante

The most famous of the Roman parks, the Villa

Borghese gardens span from Piazza del Popolo to Via

Veneto, and can be reached at the top of the Spanish

Steps. Here, you can rent bikes, electric scooters, ecocars

or rowboats. There’s also a lake with a temple dedicated

to Esculapio. Got little ones in tow? Take your children to the Bioparco Zoo

or visit the magnificent Galleria Borghese.

Villa doria pamphili

Entrances: Via di S.Pancrazio, Via Aurelia Antica,

Via Leone XII, Largo M. Luther King, Via Vitellia,

Via della Nocetta

Villa Doria Pamphili takes the latter part of its name

from the aristocratic Pamphili family, whose members

it housed up until the 18th century. When the Pamphilis

died out, the villa was passed over to the Dorias, from

whom it takes the middle part of its name. Today, it holds

the distinction of being the city’s largest landscaped public

park. A stunning villa completed in 1648, called Casino del Bel

Respiro, is the centerpiece of the grounds.

Villa Ada

Via Salaria, 275

A tranquil park with a bike rental service, winding

paths, a lake, a cafe, and an annual live music

festival running in the month of July, called Roma

Incontra Il Mondo. Villa Ada also holds the title of

Rome’s second largest park, with 450 acres, and is

rich in flora and fauna: cypresses, pines, dwarf palm

trees, turtles, and swans flourish here. One of the

most loved and visited parks of Romans.

AUGUST IN ROME: BEST BEACHES NEAR ROME

August in Rome:

Best Beaches near Rome

Summer is a popular time to visit Rome, but the hot weather may be

a bit too much for some tourists. Luckily, the Eternal City has plenty

On summer weekends, the city virtually

empties out as locals head to Ostia (the

closest beach to Rome) for a little fun

in the sun. While Ostia’s water isn’t the

cleanest, its black sandy beaches packed

with beach clubs (where you pay for a

chair and umbrella) are plenty to attract

During the ‘dolce vita’ days, the seaside town

Fregene has lost a little bit of its glitz and

glamour, it still attracts the likes of Italian

celebrities, footballers and hipsters looking for

a cooler alternative to Ostia. By night, much

like Ostia, Fregene becomes a hedonistic

playground for partygoers. Among the most

popular are Gilda on the Beach, Blu Fregene

and Singita’s famous sunset aperitivos.

The best churches

to visit in Rome

Do you know how many churches there are in Rome? Over 900.

Undoubtedly, the Italian capital is the most interesting place on

Earth when it comes to visiting basilicas, cathedral and churches.

It doesn’t even matter whether you’re religious or not, visiting these

churches in Rome along with their architectural magnificence and

artistic masterpieces is must.

THE BEST CHURCHES TO VISIT IN ROME

THE FOUR MAJOR BASILICAS OF ROME

San Giovanni in Laterano

(Basilica of St. John Lateran)

Piazza di St. Giovanni in Laterano, 4

(San Giovanni)

The massive white structure of this church is

the first thing that’ll capture your attention.

But as you get closer, you’ll notice the

artistic details, from the spiral columns to the

sculptures that adorn the basilica. But the most

astonishing fact is that unlike many believe,

the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano is the

official cathedral of Rome and the most important of the four major basilicas in Rome, not to

mention the first basilica to be built by Constantine in the 4th century. Step inside to immerse

yourself in a world of art and fascination. The interior with five aisles is the result of work done

by Borromini for the Jubilee of 1650. The enormous sculptures, paintings, arches, frescoes,

mosaics and the Holy Sacrament Altar make it one of the must-visit churches in Rome.

Santa Maria Maggiore

(Basilica of St. Mary Major)

San Paolo Fuori le Mura

(St. Paul Outside the Walls)

Piazzale San Paolo, 1 (San Paolo)

San Paolo Fuori le Mura is one of the four

major basilicas in Rome and is the second

largest after St. Peter’s Basilica. Visiting this

basilica could turn out to be the highlight of

your travel. Floor-to-ceiling columns, golden

mosaics, portraits of every Pope since Peter,

and an out-of-this-world ceiling with golden

decorations make this basilica one of the

most beautiful in Rome. This basilica is not

usually crowded due to its rather isolated

location. If you enter the courtyard to visit

the tomb of St. Paul, you find yourself in

the middle of palm trees surrounded by an

amazing rectangular collection of columns. In

the center, you see the statue of the apostle

Paul (San Paolo). You simply cannot get

enough of the peace created by the biblical

figure resting on these grounds for centuries.

THE BEST CHURCHES TO VISIT IN ROME

San Pietro

(St. Peter’s Basilica)

Piazza San Pietro, Città del Vaticano (Vatican)

Saint Peter’s Basilica is the symbol of the

Vatican and the most important church

of Christianity. Before the construction of

today’s basilica, the grounds were taken up

by the first church in the world built under

Constantine, who believed it was the resting

place of Peter. Saint Peter’s is one of the

holiest Catholic shrines in the world and an

example of Renaissance architecture–it was

designed by Michelangelo, Bramante, Bernini

and Carlo Maderno. Not to mention, it’s home

to the statue of Moses by Michelangelo and

to the Baldachin of Bernini. There are more

than 100 tombs in the St. Peter’s Basilica, of

which 91 belong to former popes, as well as

395 statues and a gorgeous dome that lies

right above St. Peter’s tomb. The basilica is so

huge that it can host 20,000 visitors at a time.

If you like a great view, don’t forget to head to

the cupola to get a fabulous panoramic view

of the city.

MUST-VISIT CHURCHES IN ROME

THE BEST CHURCHES TO VISIT IN ROME

Santa Sabina all’Aventino

Piazza Pietro D’Illiria, 1 (Aventine)

Located on Aventine Hill, Santa Sabina all’ Aventino

is one of the oldest churches in Rome, dating back to

425 AD. At a first glance, you easily notice that it is

much simpler in design in comparison to other baroque

basilicas in Rome–but it is definitely worth a visit. The

Pope celebrates the Holy Mass of Ash Wednesday here

every year.

Santa Maria in Trastevere

Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere (Trastevere)

Don’t miss out on the stunning Basilica of Santa Maria

in Trastevere–one of the most beautiful churches in

Rome. Its construction dates back to 340 AD, while other

decorations such as famous Byzantine mosaics were

made later in the 11th century. The octagonal ceiling is

a breathtaking masterpiece, and the golden mosaic arch

adds an enchanting allure.

Santa Prassede

Via di Santa Prassede, 9/a (Esquilino)

Don’t get fooled by the exterior of this modest orange

basilica–the interior is glorious. Orange, red, and navy blue

dominate the basilica, offering a lovely game of colors.

In this church you will find the Column of Flagellation,

which is said to be the column on which Jesus Christ was

flogged. The urn by the entrance has the remains of San

Valentino, the protector of lovers.

Santa Maria degli Angeli

e dei Martiri

(Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels)

Piazza della Repubblica

Designed by Michelangelo himself, this basilica was built

into the ruins of the famous Diocletian Baths. Named after

a legend of Christian martyrs who sacrificed during its

construction, Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri unveils

an awe-inspiring interior adorned with exquisite frescoes

depicting the rich tapestry of Christianity’s history.

Santo Stefano Rotondo al Celio

Via Santo Stefano Rotondo, 7 (Celio)

The most unique characteristic of this hidden church is

its circular plan. Its construction dates back to the 4th

century, at the time of Constantine. As the name suggests,

this church was built in commemoration of Santo Stefano,

the first Christian martyr. You can find 34 frescoes of other

Christian martyrs around the interior of the church.

Sant’Ignazio di Loyola

(Church of St. Ignatius Loyola)

Via del Caravita, 8a (centro storico)

Located a stone’s throw away from the Basilica of

Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, Sant’ Ignazio di Loyola is

a luxurious and glorious church. Both the travertine

exterior and golden interior are soul touching. Prepare to

be captivated by the mind-blowing spectacle above – a

ceiling that seamlessly blends marvelous architecture and

breathtaking painting.

THE BEST CHURCHES TO VISIT IN ROME

THE BEST CHURCHES TO VISIT IN ROME

Santa Maria sopra Minerva

Piazza della Minerva, 42 (centro storico)

Not far from the Pantheon, Santa Maria sopra Minerva is

one of the few Gothic churches in Rome. Golden Baroque

style stucco details were added in the early 17th century,

which were almost removed during the mid-19th century.

Among the elements that leave you mesmerized are the

three naves, the blue vault with gold stars, and the two big

organs.

Santa Maria del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo is one of the most famous squares

in Rome. Santa Maria del Popolo is constructed in the

northern part of the square in 1099. Though a minor

church, it contains works by several famous artists,

such as Raphael, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio and

Pinturicchio.

Santa Croce in Gerusalemme

(Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem)

Piazza di S. Croce in Gerusalemme (San Giovanni)

Nestled in the Esquilino neighborhood, the Basilica of

the Holy Cross in Jerusalem owes its existence to Pope

Benedict XIV. For seekers of absolute tranquility and

contemplation, this sanctuary is unparalleled. Within its

walls you can encounter significant relics, including a

fragment of the Holy Cross.

Basilica di San Clemente

Via Labicana, 95 (Colosseum)

Appearances can be deceiving – what may seem like a

typical building is an extraordinary church. This three-floor

structure conceals its treasures underground. Be sure to

visit the two lower levels; the fourth-century Basilica awaits,

as well as the remnants of an ancient Roman house in

bricks dating back to the first century after Christ.

Pantheon

(Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs)

Piazza della Rotonda (centro storico)

Did you know that the Pantheon dates back to 118 AD?

Yes, before Christianity. Beyond its iconic oculus lies a rich

history. It was the first temple where people worshipped

Roman Gods directly, and later evolved into a church.

Within its walls, you’ll find the final resting place of artistic

legend Raphael, alongside Kings Vittorio Emanuele II and

Umberto I.

Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza

Corso del Rinascimento, 40 (Navona)

Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza, a baroque masterpiece by

Borromini, rival to Bernini, is a hidden gem with limited

opening hours. Ensure you check its availability before

making your way. Marvel at the exquisite design, a

testament to Borromini’s geometric genius, as you step

inside this remarkable architectural treasure.

Il Marchese unites the best of two worlds: a bar with

elegant French salon accents and pompous chandeliers,

and a restaurant with the coziness of a Roman trattoria.

But it’s not just the décor that’s impressive. When you

walk into Il Marchese you step inside Europe’s first Amaro

bar with more than 500 different Amaro labels.

During the recent G20 in Rome, Il Marchese had two

special customers: the American First Lady Jill Biden

and the French Première Dame Brigitte Macron. The two

ladies said they were “delighted with the lovely welcome”,

complimenting the staff and the quality of the products.

ll Marchese takes its name from the Marchese del Grillo,

a symbol of Rome’s inimitable spirit– a true gentleman,

but always inclined to irony, a lover of tradition, but also

appreciated by those who come from different cultures.

Here, with Chef Daniele Roppo, you’re sure to have a

fantastic dining experience. The culinary philosophy has strong Roman roots and is inspired

by traditional recipes that are lightened according to a contemporary taste, also offering

vegetarian dishes. Quality is always a priority. Ingredients are purchased from local producers.

The amaro and cocktail bar at Il Marchese pays tribute to the elegance of 19th-century

French aristocracy, with precious stuccoes, wallpapers, and velvets. The cocktails here are

perfect for an after-dinner drink or as an aperitif. Each signature drink is crafted with premium

ingredients expertly mixed. Leading the cocktail bar is Fabrizio Valeriani, a bartender with

extensive experience.

Since then, Unique al Palatino Garden Restaurant has

become one of our favorite spots for enjoying an al

The area has recently gained even more beauty and

tranquility thanks to the construction of a new sidewalk

along Via di San Teodoro, perfect for an evening stroll

around the Colosseum archaeological park after dinner.

Step into this garden restaurant, where blooming

flowers, centuries-old olive trees, and fragrant

citrus create a dreamlike escape. Unique al Palatino

with a contemporary twist using innovative cooking

techniques. Ingredients are fresh and the produce is exclusively Italian for an emotional

experience around the Italian territory. We especially love their seafood offerings. As a starter,

we tried and adored their tuna tartare with avocado. For the first course, their delicate sea

bass ravioli with prawns, asparagus tips, and lemon zest is a must-try. And as a second

course, who could resist their frittura: delicious fried prawns and shrimp, still incredibly

delicate. There are also tasty options for vegetarians. The superb wine list and the excellent

It is no secret that Japanese cuisine has grown its way

into Italy’s heart, just look at how many successful

restaurants have popped up in the last decade. However,

we often reduce Japanese culture to sushi, and (as

much as we love the creative ways you can enjoy sushi

in Rome) that is a disservice. Thankfully, Sake Boutique

Izakaya is here to show us a different side of Japan, and

to teach us about sake.Open in Piazza Albania (Aventino),

just south of Circo Massimo and north of Piramide, this carefully designed restaurant offers

an intimate experience from the center of Rome to the inside of a Japanese home. Truly, Sake

Boutique Izakaya offers an authentic food and drink experience – without too many frills.

A traditional Japanese izakaya is a place where you can sit down, drink, and eat something

simple convivially, sort of like an Italian osteria. Founded by the minds behind the popular

Sushi e Noodles franchise, Sake Boutique Izakaya unites traditional Japanese food to the art

of sake.

Here at Sake Boutique, sake – or should we say nihonshu? – obviously reigns supreme. With

over 30 types of sake, get ready for a journey as you taste the beverage on its own or cleverly

mixed in more elaborate drinks. But it’s not all: Sake Boutique also has Japanese whiskeys

and gins! The food menu is not extravagant, it’s grounded on simple dishes, childhood

comfort food – but made with quality ingredients. There is something for all palates: fish,

meat, vegetarian. And, of course, dessert.

Come here for lunch, aperitivo, dinner, or post-dinner, or even for a masterclass or a sake

tasting. You’ll be in for an authentic experience, designed with care and the utmost respect for

tradition.

The view takes in Castel Sant’Angelo, the Vittorio Emanuele

Apart from the traditional spot in the San Lorenzo

neighborhood, Gelato San Lorenzo is now also available in

several locations across the city, such as Via delle Fornaci,

3 (San Pietro), Piazza Alessandria, 19 (Porta Pia), and

Piazza Vittorio, with its very own kiosk hosted by Gatsby

cream flavors made in-house everyday with all natural

ingredients. Their main focus is to create a model of pure

gelato, free of the added, unnatural substitutes

that are often used to give gelato its taste, sweetness and

consistency. Every flavor served at Gelato San Lorenzo

is clear of food coloring, unnatural flavors and trans fats.

Natural fibers are used instead to bring out the thick

creaminess that one looks for in a good ice cream and

25% less sugar is added to these already fruit, nut and

honey-sweetened delights. The gelateria is very attentive

to allergies and intolerances. It naturally also offers a few

without falling into a “tourist trap”.

Cremilla gives you a chance to taste a deliciously creamy

area around Castel Sant Angelo, visiting the city’s main

hotspots. Besides a great selection of ice cream, Cremilla offers fresh seasonal juices, crepes

– either plain or chocolate, flavoured waffles, pancakes, smoothies, milkshakes and organic

yoghurt.

At Cremilla, you can find the traditional Sicilian cannoli (a crunchy fried wafer filled with

sheep’s ricotta cream) and brioches. Or, to fight the summer heat, a refreshing crunchy

granita can be a great choice. Fruit flavoured gelato is made using more than 50% seasonal

fresh fruit delivered daily, while cream flavoured ones are made only with local organic milk

and eggs. The gelato is mixed continuously in the kitchen lab so that it feels real, swift, and

fresh at every bite. Most products are made on-site daily – there’s even a glass panel on the

Until 24 August

Daily 7pm - 2am

Along the Tiber Banks, between Ponte Sublicio

& Ponte Sisto

lungoiltevereroma.it

The fun riverside summer fair Lungo Il Tevere

is back. One bank of the Tiber River is once

again hosting popup restaurants, bars, shops,

exhibits, foosball tables and experiences of all

kinds. From Ponte Sisto all the way to Ponte

Sublicio, with two access points by the two

bridges, the Eternal City is taking back over

one kilometer of space to entertain Romans

and tourists alike. Take a stroll along the river

and do some vintage shopping, admire the

photographic and cinematic exhibits, take a

picture or two, play some games and then

stop for a drink or a bite at one of the many

restaurants. Perfect for a different aperitivo

or dinner than you would normally have in

Trastevere.

FESTA DELLA MADONNA

DELLA NEVE

TRADITION

5 August

Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore

8pm

For those who miss wintry nights in the

height of summer, fret not: La Madonna

della Neve has you covered. Each year, from

8 PM to midnight on August 5th, Piazza di

Santa Maria Maggiore transforms into a

snowy wonderland filled with music, dancing,

and light shows. This event, which draws

thousands of visitors annually, originated

from a dream. According to legend, the Virgin

Mary appeared in a dream to Pope Liberius

(352–366 AD) on the night of August 4th

and told him that a location in Rome would

be marked by snowfall. The next morning,

snow was found covering the site where the

Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore now stands.

What better way to escape the August heat

than watching a movie under the night sky

with a friend or a few as you sip a cold drink,

bite into a slice of pizza, or eat a delicious

gelato? Luckily, the season of moonlit movie

nights continues with more dates, screenings,

and special guests in various locations within

the Eternal City.

While the 2025 events hosted by Cinema

America’s Il Cinema in Piazza have come to

an end, the magical Casa del Cinema in the

heart of Villa Borghese still has a lot to (info

casadelcinema.it). Every day of the week, a

new screening dedicated to the stars of Italian

and international cinema awaits you starting

at 9.30pm, free of charge.

Pugliese, both running until September, with

some of the season’s top films. (More info:

cinevillageroma.it)

There are plenty of other arenas and open

spaces in Rome offering all kinds of movies,

from classics to previews to new releases

to indie productions to Oscar-winning

films. Among the many locations, Arena

Garbatella has over 500 seats and is

showing a film per night until September 14

(info: arenagarbatella.it); Arena Tiziano is on

till September 30 in Via Guido Reni, 2; Arena

Villa Lazzaroni is on till September 15th in

Via Appia Nuova, 522.

Some events are completely free, others

require a ticket or reservation, so be sure

to check their respective websites for full

programs and policies.

In Piazza Vittorio (Esquilino), the 25th

edition of Notti di Cinema a Piazza

Vittorio continues, as well as Arena

Sagre Around Rome

Sagras are perhaps Italian foodies’ best-kept secret. These rustic festivals are

rooted in centuries-old traditions and are deeply connected to the land and the

local communities that host them. Each sagra centers around a specific local

product, dish, ingredient, or drink, and features food stalls offering tastings and

full portions of recipes that celebrate the event’s star ingredient. These festivals

often include competitions, live entertainment, and cultural activities. If you’re

looking to try delicious food you won’t easily find in the city, check out this list of

From July 15 to September 14, 2025,

the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e

Contemporanea presents “2025 East and

West: International Dialogue Exhibition – From

Shanghai to Rome”, a major exhibition

connecting cultures and perspectives

through contemporary art.

This show brings together over seventy

works by more than forty artists, initiating

a compelling conversation between

modern Chinese visual culture and

iconic masterpieces from the Italian

20th-century canon. The exhibition

is co-organized by Italy’s Ministry

of Culture, the National Gallery,

the Shanghai Academy of Fine

Arts, and the Shanghai Artists

Association, with support from

Zhong Art International and

numerous academic institutions

across both nations.

2025 EAST AND WEST: A VISIONARY DIALOGUE BETWEEN CHINA AND ITALY

A Cross-Cultural Encounter

This cross-cultural dialogue is not just symbolic. It

materializes through the juxtaposition of works by

revered Italian masters like Giacomo Balla, Umberto

Boccioni, Amedeo Modigliani, Giorgio de Chirico,

Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, and so on, with a vibrant

spectrum of contemporary Chinese creations. Some

works are by globally acclaimed figures like Maurizio

Cattelan and Rudolf Stingel, while others highlight

promising talents such as Daniela De Lorenzo and

Alessandro Piangiamore, inviting reflection on shared

visions and divergent histories. The exhibition arrives at

a timely moment, coinciding with two key anniversaries:

the 700th year since the death of Marco Polo and the

55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy

and China. This historical backdrop underscores a central

aim of the exhibition: to explore identity, transformation,

and artistic renewal amid global flux.

Tradition in Flux

What emerges is a dynamic portrayal of Chinese

contemporary art as a practice deeply rooted in tradition

but open to reinvention. Classical techniques, such

as ink painting, are reinterpreted to address presentday

themes. From Jiao Xiaojian’s The Sparrow Flies

Toward the Sun to the vibrant abstractions of Ding Yi

and the meditative landscapes of Bai Ying, each work offers a new reading of space, identity,

and emotion. Cultural symbolism resonates throughout. We encounter epic narratives like Zeng

Chenggang’s sculptures inspired by The Heroes of Liangshan, alongside futuristic urban visions,

introspective portraits, and algorithmic abstractions.

A Platform for Global Dialogue

At its core, 2025 East and West is not just an exhibition, but a cultural mechanism for exchange.

It reaffirms the role of contemporary art as a space of negotiation, between past and present,

between one tradition and another, and ultimately, between East and West.

In this spirit, 2025 East and West becomes not only an exhibition, but a cultural bridge: one

that invites viewers to reflect, connect, and envision a more nuanced global future through the

universal language of art.
