Dorcas Tan

Headhunting emerged from a dream.

After spending two decades in the

corporate world, Dorcas desired

something different, something that she

could truly call her own and be proud

of. Her career had revolved around

Human Resources and Recruitment

since the early days. And her

competitive nature, honed through her

athletic achievements in school,

seamlessly translated into the cutthroat

recruitment industry. Despite being the

youngest consultant at the time, the

industry veteran swiftly rose to become

the top rookie recruitment consultant in

the company. Success came quickly

and abundantly, and by the age of 24,

Dorcas found herself managing a

recruitment branch. Even the birth of

her first child at 27 did not hinder her

career progression.

When the company presented the

woman entrepreneur with the

opportunity to revive a struggling

business encompassing five branches,

she eagerly accepted the challenge and

established a sixth branch, overseeing a

team of over 30 recruitment

consultants. From that point onward,

the career of Dorcas soared to greater

heights, and she never looked back. As

she approached her late thirties, despite

the numerous roles she had occupied

and the last was leading a team of more

than 700 service personnel for The

Worlds Best Airport, there remained a

void—an undeniable sense that

something was missing, that she lacked

ownership. This prompted Dorcas to

make a monumental decision: leaving

behind a comfortable, well-paying job

to create her own recruitment brand,

Today, Recruit Inc. is a comprehensive

HR solutions company that

collaborates with clients worldwide in

their pursuit of talent. The company

has a recruitment and headhunting

permanent placement arm, a temporary

contingency workforce project

management arm, as well as its HR

consultancy arm for clients who need

HR advisory services. Recalling the

past, she states, “I began with only my

mobile phone and had to dig deep into

my savings to rent a shoebox office in

the CDB. From that day, I realized that

with hard work, it was possible to turn

“This would require a lot of my time

overseas; hence I hope to develop and

raise up a good General manager in

Singapore to run the operations here. I

am really excited with these

developments and stepping into a new

phase in the company's growth,” says

Dorcas.

Source of Motivation

When asked to share her source of

motivation, Dorcas replied, “Work has

to be driven by passion. If you're

passionate about what you do, you

don't have to work a single day in your

life, because it all feels like play. Start

small but think big. Have a goal and

stick to it regardless of the obstacles

that come your way. The goal, that

feeling that I could do it really

motivated me. I have also benefited a

lot from engaging with entrepreneurs

from different industries at different

stages of their journey. They have

inspired me with their stories, their

struggles and their success and these

have in turn motivated me to press on,

to believe in what I do and stick to my

dream. Like those who have pursued

this journey before me and who have

given me much inspiration and

motivation, I want to do likewise for

those who hope to pursue an

entrepreneurial journey.”

“As an entrepreneur, you will face a lot

of issues that require quick decisions

where you will have no one to rely on

except yourself to just figure it out. It

takes a lot of grit and determination

plus perseverance and there will be

many occasions where you will be

knocked down. In these times, you just

have to pick yourself up and move on.

Believe in yourself and never look

back. Stay faithful to your dream and

your goal and do not let naysayers

detract or derail you. Stay engaged

with others on the same journey so that

you know you're never alone.”
