Renowned Bespoke Tailoring Expert

Continues to Shape Fashion Elegance

Tailoring is an art that transcends time,

creating garments that are not just clothes but

reflections of individuality and sophistication.

Tailoring services for suits and other garments play a

pivotal role in the world of fashion, ensuring that

individuals can do clothing that not only fits

impeccably but also reflects their unique style. These

services involve skilled tailors meticulously crafting

garments to individual measurements, creating a

personalized and comfortable fit.

From suits that exude professionalism to garments

that make a statement, these skilled tailors bring

visions to life, one stitch at a time. Professor Andrew

Madan Ramroop OBE CMTT (CEO of Maurice

Sedwell) is an influential leader and a distinguished

Ultra Bespoke Tailor with notable leadership qualities

and a strong personality. His leadership at Maurice

Sedwell continues to shape the landscape of Savile

Row, blending tradition with contemporary relevance.

Meet The Renowned, Influential Ultra Bespoke

Tailor

Prof. Andrew is a highly acclaimed figure in the

bespoke tailoring industry, renowned for his expertise,

innovation, and commitment to excellence. Born with

Jason Vego,

Co-Founder

a passion for tailoring, his journey from Trinidad &

Tobago to the prestigious Savile Row in London is a

testament to his dedication to

mastering the craft. Recalling his past,

Prof. Andrew states, “Ever since I have

known that I could stop full-time

education and 'learn a trade', my

ambition was to become a tailor. It is

said of the privileged, 'Some are born

with a silver spoon in their mouths, but

for me, it could be said that I was born

“with a tailor's thimble in my finger".”

He swiftly mastered the art of crafting

trousers and jackets. During his

apprenticeship, he heard that the rich

and renowned, including Hollywood

stars and industry leaders, had their

suits tailored on Savile Row. And the

influential leader wanted to be a part of

this remarkable environment. By July

1970, he had saved enough to purchase

a boat ticket, embarking on a journey

from Trinidad & Tobago to Savile

Row. His remarkable path took shape

from this point, paving the way for a

journey filled with notable

achievements and experiences.

In 1974, Prof. Andrew joined Maurice

Sedwell, and after a fourteen-year

tenure, he felt it was the best moment

to embark on his own bespoke tailoring

venture. Having overseen all aspects of

operations, from strategy to cutting,

fitting, and tailoring, he was ready for a

new chapter. However, Mr. Maurice

Sedwell initially hesitated at the idea of

his departure. So, he proposed an

alternative solution to Prof. Andrew –

if he could secure the funds, he should

consider purchasing the business.

That's precisely the path the

distinguished tailor decided to take.

Hence, he became the CEO of Maurice

Sedwell.

Unveiling Exquisite Tailoring

Craftsmanship

Maurice Sedwell is synonymous with

Ultra Bespoke Tailoring, creating

subtly distinctive designs, impeccably

fitting garments, and setting itself apart

with a unique silhouette and

handcrafting method. It offers no RTW

or MTM but has ultra bespoke tailors

exclusively. The tailoring company

continues redefining bespoke tailoring

standards, creating garments that are

not just worn but celebrated. Today, it

continues to uphold its commitment to

bespoke excellence under the guidance

of Prof. Andrew.

Furthermore, it can perplex potential

customers in a Savile Row landscape

where every establishment claims to

offer bespoke tailoring. Hence, Prof.

Andrew decided to distinguish the

Savile Row-based company by crafting

a distinctive silhouette, style, and

method of handcrafting. Developing a

house style versatile enough for

business, leisure, or formal occasions

was crucial.

The certified master tailor strongly

opposes the notion of a standard suit

resembling replicas from other tailors.

“My objective is to be outstanding in

an interesting way and not create

seasonal fashion but to focus on styles

that would outlast fashion and have

longevity,” says Prof. Andrew.

Signature Elements of Maurice

Sedwell

The Savile Row-based company

Maurice Sedwell presents three

distinctive designs – Signature Curve,

Signature Delta, and Signature Sport.

In addition to this, the company

prioritizes purposeful styling, allowing

customers to express their individuality

through their clothes. Introduced at the

Federation of Merchant Tailors

exhibition in 1976, its silhouette has

evolved over the years, undergoing

refinements to remain relevant and

purpose-driven.

It aims to create an optical illusion of a

slimmer waist by positioning the

pocket details, softly constructed

handcraft tailoring, and interesting

luxurious cloth. “Unique features

include a chest pocket harmonized with

shoulder shape, angled side pockets

with mirrored flaps, roll sleeve crowns,

slight pergola shoulders, and a subtly

built-up chest, setting Maurice Sedwell

apart from other Savile Row tailors,”

says Prof. Andrew.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation

As a certified master tailor, Prof.

Andrew states that to stay relevant and

balance tradition and innovation at

Maurice Sedwell, he and his team

focus on offering wearable and less

fashionable styles. He further adds that

fashion trends align with RTW and

follow seasonal trends. Meanwhile,

“style” expresses one's personality,

lifestyle, and purpose. “We maintain

true traditional values in hand

craftsmanship; it is sartorial art,

sculpting cloth around a human body

for style, comfort, and elegance. Our

styles outlast 'fashion trends',” proudly

asserts Prof. Andrew.

Facing Challenges Head-on

When confronted with challenges,

leaders demonstrate resilience and

strategic thinking to navigate

complexities. Successful leaders

overcome challenges and leverage

them as stepping stones for

organizational growth and innovation.

Similarly, Prof. Andrew faced

challenges such as a shortage of highly

skilled craftsmen & women and

extortionately high rents and business

rates, where landlords did not value or

8

Cashmere, Croc and

leather Tujue’

appreciate the international reputation tailors had brought

to Savile Row and Mayfair. However, he didn't give up

and turned them into opportunities for growth and

success. As a result, he founded the Savile Row Academy

in 2008, which stays true to its values and leverages the

Savile Row legacy.

Velvet Tuxedo

Focus on Sustainability

Prof. Andrews, a distinguished figure renowned for his

expertise in bespoke tailoring and CEO of Maurice

Sedwell, believes that both direct and indirect costs

significantly impact the future trajectory of Savile Row.

Over the past five decades with Maurice Sedwell, he has

witnessed the transformation of the landscape.

Back in the early seventies, Savile Row had just one

RTW shop but today, RTW dominates the scene.

Unfortunately, there is a surge in the number of

9

pretenders masquerading as bespoke tailors. Since

these impostors are present in the majority, they

drive the cycle of trends because their purpose is to

'pack them high and sell them cheap' and discredit

genuine fashionable trends to boost sales.

On the other hand, in the ultra bespoke trends,

Prof. Andrew and his company focus on

Sustainability. By creating handmade garments that

outlast fleeting fashion trends, Maurice Sedwell

aims to minimize its carbon footprint and embraces

the resurgence of double-breasted suits that align

with its commitment to enduring style and quality

craftsmanship.

Golden Milestones and Achievements

Key achievements and milestones serve as pivotal

markers, reflecting the success and vision of a

10

company. In May 1938, Maurice

Sedwell started his business. His

crowning achievement came in 1956

when he won the Gold Medal in a

national tailoring competition,

surpassing all competitors from Savile

Row, the city, and the West End.

Following this triumph, he relocated

from Fleet Street to the first floor of 9-

10 Savile Row.

Likewise, in 1974, Prof. Andrew joined

the company directly from the London

College of Fashion after completing a

three-year degree in two years. He has

garnered an unparalleled array of

accolades and awards in the history of

tailoring. Some of the noteworthy

recognitions include "Professor for

Distinction in the Field of Tailoring"

by the University of the Arts, London,

the Mayor of London 'Trailblazer

Award,' and the distinction of being the

only practicing tailor honored with the

Most Excellent Order of the British

Empire (OBE).

Future Aspirations

In honor of Mr. Maurice Sedwell, Prof.

Andrew intends for the tailoring

company to evolve into a timeless

luxury brand, ensuring that the name

lives on into perpetuity. This can be

achieved by upholding their legacy of

ultra-bespoke tailoring, diversifying

their offerings to semi-bespoke suits,

and incorporating additional clothes

such as casual luxury cloth,

leatherwear, perfumery, knitwear, and

more. This will solidify Maurice

Sedwell's position in the world of

luxury and sophistication.

Upcoming Developments

2024 is a landmark year for Prof.

Andrew because he will celebrate 50

years at Maurice Sedwell. He

anticipates the publication of this

autobiography, the launch of Savile

Row Bespoke Academy (SRBA), and

the production of a film documenting

his journey from Port of Spain to

Savile Row.

Leadership Style

When asked to describe his leadership

style and what leadership principles he

prioritizes, Prof. Andrew states, “My

style is a mixture of principles,

sometimes Situational, laissez-faire

and Motivational. I empower people to

make decisions but could be somewhat

autocratic if standards are not

maintained to the level that we set

ourselves. Mentorship is vital in

harnessing talent and ability. However,

the team's aptitude and attitude are of

paramount importance in achieving

persistent standards.”

Key Qualities And Skills

As a distinguished leader known for

his exceptional contributions to the

field of tailoring, Prof. Andrew

believes one of the key qualities and

skills necessary for a successful

entrepreneur is embracing a customercentric

approach by surpassing the

clients' expectations and demonstrating

genuine care. He also emphasized

cultivating a supportive team that is

invested in both their own success and

yours. “A team should feel that they are

working for themselves, their future,

and their lifestyle – not for a boss.

Motivation often comes from within

oneself,” states Prof. Andrew.

Advice to

Entrepreneurs

For aspiring

entrepreneurs,

Prof. Andrew

advises,

“Every human being

on this earth has

one thing in

common – we all

wear clothes of

some sort or the

other. I would

encourage aspiring

tailors to be trained

holistically, aim to

become a true

master tailor, and

enjoy the discovery

of learning new

ideas. Be

emotionally

connected with your

ambitions.”

to fashion consumption.

Unveiling the Leadership Principles

In his role as a founder of multiple

ventures, Brian places a strong

emphasis on leadership principles that

not only guide their actions but also

foster a culture of collaboration,

innovation, and continuous

improvement. These values — all

heart; all are a part; all do what we say

we're going to do; all have the

entrepreneur spirit; all learn from

others and our own failures; all are

students and want to grow; all love to

win; always find the better way; all do

daily business daily — serve as the

foundation for their collective success.

Future Goals

In the near future, the trailblazer leader

envisions his ventures expanding their

footprint significantly, reaching a

remarkable milestone of 5900 locations

worldwide and collaborating with 50

celebrity curators who bring their

unique perspectives and expertise.

Here, the goal is not just to be a

ubiquitous presence, but to create a

meaningful and positive impact on

each community the venture serves.

Also, by partnering with influential

figures across various fields, Brian

aims to enhance the quality and variety

of the products and services, offering

customers an unparalleled and

personalized experience.

Fashion Industry Trends

In the ever-evolving landscape of the

fashion industry, one of the

predominant trends that continues to

shape the narrative is a heightened

emphasis on profitability. Brian

believes that as we step into 2024 and

beyond, the era of 'No More Faking it'

is becoming increasingly evident.

The Key Trait Every Successful

Entrepreneur Must Embrace

Successful entrepreneurs possess a

combination of key qualities and skills

that enable them to navigate business

challenges and drive their ventures to

success. As a successful serial

entrepreneur, Brian believes that a high

tolerance for ambiguity is a crucial

quality for a successful entrepreneur, as

navigating the unpredictable landscape

of business requires the ability to adapt

to ever-changing circumstances.

Timeless Advice

For those individuals thinking of

entering this space right now, Brian

advises, “Create Value for Your

Customer.” This is because he believes

that creating value for your customers

is not a one-time effort but an ongoing

commitment. By understanding your

customers, fostering innovation,

building strong relationships, and

incorporating these other key elements,

you will be well-positioned to thrive in

your chosen space.

Wisdom For Budding Entrepreneurs

When advising budding entrepreneurs,

one key piece of wisdom Brian would

emphasize is the importance of “Define

the Niche and Go Smaller”. In the fastpaced

and competitive business world,

the instinct may be to cast a wide net

and target a broad audience. However,

the trailblazer leader recommends

resisting that temptation and instead

focusing on a specific niche.

By honing in on a well-defined niche,

entrepreneurs can establish a strong

foundation for their business. This

involves thoroughly researching and

understanding a particular target

audience's specific needs, preferences,

and pain points. It's about becoming an

expert in that niche and gaining an indepth

understanding of its challenges

and opportunities.

MOST

INFLUENTIAL

LEADERS IN

INDUSTRY 2024

A Beacon Of Leadership And Innovation

In Outdoor Accessories

The current consumer landscape is witnessing

a rising demand for authentic brands, a trend

that shows no signs of diminishing in the

foreseeable future. Today's consumers are

increasingly drawn to brands that exude authenticity,

seeking products and experiences that feel genuine

and aligned with a brand's true identity, rather than

being perceived as disingenuous or overly trendy.

In response to this shift in consumer preferences,

Jeff Blauer (CEO & President of SHED RAIN)

anticipates that brands will increasingly focus on

cultivating customer loyalty through strategic

collaborations with like-minded companies or

individuals. These collaborations provide an

opportunity for brands to create innovative and clever

products that not only resonate with their core values

but also appeal to a discerning consumer base.

By embracing authenticity and avoiding the pitfalls of

chasing fleeting trends, brands can establish a deeper

connection with their audience. This connection goes

beyond the transactional nature of traditional

consumer-brand relationships, fostering a sense of

21

trust and shared values. In the evolving

marketplace, the emphasis on genuine

brand expression and meaningful

collaborations is likely to shape the

future of consumer engagement and

brand success.

Meet The Influential Leader

With an illustrious career spanning

decades, Jeff brings unparalleled

expertise and strategic acumen to lead

SHED RAIN, a renowned player in the

umbrella and rainwear industry. His

journey with the company started when

he was a young boy, observing and

learning from his father and

grandfather, who managed the family

business. After college, he headed to

New York City, working as a sales

manager for brands like Calvin Klein,

Jones New York, and Dior.

This experience in the fashion industry

gave Jeff valuable insights into

innovation and design, along with a

deep understanding of market

dynamics, consumer behavior, and the

importance of staying ahead of

industry trends. When the influential

leader returned to Portland and joined

SHED RAIN, he brought back this

fresh perspective to contribute to its

growth.

A Fourth-Generation, Family-

Owned Business

SHED RAIN is a fourth-generation,

family-owned business founded by

Jeff's grandfather, Meyer Blauer, his

brother Sol Blauer, and uncle Barney

Liebreich in 1947. Headquartered in

Portland, Oregon, the company has

accumulated decades of expertise and

innovation in manufacturing, becoming

a pioneer in the industry. With a legacy

of over 75 years of craftsmanship,

SHED RAIN is dedicated to crafting

intelligent and reliable weather

protection that consumers can trust,

regardless of the weather.

Navigating Challenges with

Innovation and Style

According to Jeff, even though SHED

RAIN boasts a legacy spanning over

75 years, the early 90s posed a

challenge with the presence of

formidable competitors in the industry.

Recognizing that the market was

primarily driven by commodities, he

realized that relying solely on

craftsmanship wouldn't suffice to

attract and retain customers. Drawing

inspiration from his experience in the

fashion realm, Jeff and his team began

infusing upscale trends and vibrant

colors into their designs, creating an

exciting allure for shoppers and

fostering better brand recall.

In the face of industry evolution and

economic fluctuations, they

consistently return to their roots as a

family-owned and operated company.

Their commitment to producing

quality, innovative products remains

unwavering. “As a tight-knit family, we

gather around one mission and execute

against it, no matter what comes our

way,” says Jeff.

Key Milestones

SHED RAIN takes great pride in being

a longstanding company rooted in

Portland's heritage, spanning over 75

years. This longevity is not a common

achievement. Jeff expresses his deep

gratitude to both the loyal customers

and dedicated employees, as their

support has been instrumental in the

company's sustained success.

Throughout the years, the company has

experienced remarkable growth and

unexpected achievements. It ventured

into new product categories by

introducing its sister brand, GOGO,

and earned acclaim, such as the Red

Dot Award for its Stratus umbrella.

More recently, the company's focus has

shifted towards excelling in design and

innovation, exemplified by its Vortex

umbrella, which is capable of

withstanding winds of up to 75 mph.

Aims To Reign Supreme As Global

Weather Accessory Leader

As the Founder of SHED RAIN, Jeff

aims to maintain the company's

position as the best in its field and

plans to expand categorically and grow

its portfolio of clever products for

outdoor use. Its goal is to become a

globally recognized brand known for

high-quality weather and outdoor

accessories. The influential leader

enjoys actively contributing to the

company's success, overseeing

operations, and investing time in

mentoring the team, including the

recent addition of his son. He aspires to

22

make SHED RAIN a workplace where

people genuinely enjoy coming to

work.

Upcoming Developments

SHED RAIN, featured on “Shark

Tank,” recently launched The Duo, a

dual-handle umbrella designed for two

people. Ideal for friends, couples, or

parent-child pairs of different heights,

The Duo features a patented design

with an extendable second handle for

safety. On January 24, Jeff and his

team introduced the Artist Series

collection, showcasing unique styles

from designers Lisa Congdon,

StudioProba, and Katie Merz,

reflecting their communities in NYC

and Portland, Oregon. Exciting

partnerships are also in progress to

broaden SHED RAIN's audience.

A Consensus-Driven Approach

Jeff leads with a consensus-driven

approach, placing a significant

emphasis on the happiness and growth

of the employees in their respective

roles. Fostering an environment of

continuous learning and challenge is a

key priority for him. He has recognized

the value of listening and allowing

individuals to learn firsthand rather

than immediately providing solutions.

Autonomy is essential, giving people

the freedom to navigate challenges

independently while also identifying

areas where collaborative efforts can

enhance outcomes.

leadership. He has welcomed external

perspectives to fuel innovation and

push SHED RAIN to reach its full

potential. Drawing from the

mentorship he received from his father

and grandfather, Jeff is committed to

offering the same opportunities for

growth and development to the team.

Essential Qualities Of A Successful

Entrepreneur

Among the most accomplished

business leaders Jeff encountered,

qualities such as thorough researchers,

clever, and creative stand out.

However, the pivotal trait they share is

a willingness to make mistakes and

glean valuable lessons from them.

Entrepreneurship demands a deep dive

into the intricacies, and it isn't always a

comfortable journey. Those who

achieve the most tremendous success

are those who embrace uncertainty and

exhibit the resilience to bounce back

after experiencing setbacks.

One-Line Quote

When questioned about his business

approach and vision in a nutshell, Jeff

remarked, “Don't be afraid to shoot for

uncomfortable goals, you never know

who you'll inspire or what you'll

accomplish along the way.”

Words of Wisdom

As a versatile leader

and entrepreneur,

Jeff says, “Getting

into the fashion

industry may be

challenging, but the

rewards are worth it.

If you're starting out,

consider completing

retail buyer training

and improve your

A Thousand Years of Style –

The History and Evolution of the

Fashion

Industry

The fashion industry, a realm where

creativity meets commerce, has a rich and

storied history that spans centuries. From

the elaborate garments of medieval times to the

avant-garde designs of the modern runway,

fashion has been a mirror reflecting the societal

changes, artistic movements, and economic shifts

throughout the ages. This journey through time

takes us on a fascinating exploration of the

evolution of the fashion industry, a narrative

marked by innovation, rebellion, and an everchanging

definition of style.

Ancient Beginnings: A Tapestry of Textiles

The roots of the fashion industry can be traced

back to ancient civilizations that valued clothing

not only for practicality but also as a symbol of

status and identity. Mesopotamians, Egyptians,

and Greeks employed intricate weaving techniques

to craft garments adorned with symbols and motifs

that conveyed social standing and cultural

significance. The vividly dyed fabrics and

luxurious materials used by these civilizations laid

the groundwork for the premium textiles that

would become synonymous with high fashion.

24

Medieval Opulence: Fashion as Status Symbol

In the medieval period, clothing became a powerful

indicator of one's social class and occupation. The elaborate

garments worn by nobility, adorned with jewels and

luxurious fabrics, spoke volumes about wealth and power.

The emergence of guilds and trade routes facilitated the

exchange of exotic materials, leading to the creation of

garments that transcended local influences. The sumptuary

laws of the time, dictating who could wear what, further

emphasized the role of fashion as a societal construct.

Renaissance and the Birth of Tailoring

The Renaissance marked a turning point in the history of

fashion, with a renewed emphasis on individualism and

self-expression. Tailoring became a recognized craft, and

garments began to be tailored to fit the unique proportions

of the wearer. The advent of the printing press allowed

fashion trends to spread more rapidly, enabling a more

interconnected European fashion landscape. The creation of

patterns and the rise of fashion publications laid the

foundation for a nascent fashion industry that would soon

transcend national borders.

The Birth of Fashion Capitals

The 17th and 18th centuries saw the emergence of fashion

capitals such as Paris and London. The French court, under

the reign of Louis XIV, became a trendsetter for European

fashion, with the establishment of the first fashion houses

and the concept of haute couture. The Industrial Revolution

brought about significant changes in the production of

textiles and garments, making fashion more accessible to a

broader audience. Ready-to-wear clothing became

increasingly popular, catering to the growing middle class.

Victorian Constraints and Liberations

The Victorian era of the 19th century was characterized by

both restraint and rebellion in fashion. While corsets and

crinolines enforced a rigid silhouette, the emergence of the

Arts and Crafts movement and the Aesthetic Dress

Movement challenged societal norms. Innovations in textile

manufacturing and the use of sewing machines

revolutionized the industry, allowing for greater variety and

affordability in clothing. The proliferation of fashion

magazines further democratized style, providing inspiration

to a burgeoning consumer base.

The Roaring Twenties: Flappers and Fashion Liberation

The 1920s witnessed a seismic shift in societal attitudes and

fashion. The aftermath of World War I and the spirit of

liberation led to the rise of the "flapper" style, characterized

by shorter hemlines, loose silhouettes, and a rejection of

traditional norms. Coco Chanel, a trailblazing designer,

played a pivotal role in popularizing practical and chic

clothing for women. The Jazz Age not only brought about

iconic fashion but also laid the groundwork for the modern

fashion industry's emphasis on individual expression and

constant reinvention.

The Impact of World Wars

World War II had a profound impact on the fashion

industry, as resources were diverted towards the war effort,

leading to fabric rationing and restrictions on clothing

design. Utility clothing became a necessity, emphasizing

practicality over extravagance. Post-war, the fashion

industry experienced a resurgence, with Christian Dior's

"New Look" in 1947 symbolizing a return to opulence and

femininity. The 1950s saw the rise of iconic fashion houses

and the consolidation of Paris as the global fashion capital.

The Swinging Sixties: Youthquake and Cultural

Revolution

The 1960s witnessed a youth-driven revolution in fashion.

The emergence of iconic figures like Mary Quant and the

Beatles marked a departure from the formalities of the

previous decades. Mini skirts, bold patterns, and

experimental materials became the norm. The fashion

industry, now more closely aligned with popular culture,

saw a democratization of style as ready-to-wear fashion

gained prominence. London, with its vibrant youth culture,

challenged the dominance of Paris and established itself as

a fashion capital.

Counterculture and Subcultures

The late 1960s and 1970s witnessed the rise of

countercultural movements that rejected mainstream

fashion. Hippie fashion embraced natural fabrics, tie-dye,

and a bohemian aesthetic, while punk fashion of the 1970s

was characterized by rebellion, DIY ethos, and

unconventional materials. These subcultures challenged

traditional notions of style and paved the way for a more

diverse and eclectic fashion landscape.

25

characterized by quick production cycles and

affordability, emerged as a dominant force,

challenging the traditional seasonal model.

Sustainability and Ethical Fashion

High Fashion and Street Style Convergence

The 1980s and 1990s marked a period of dynamic contrast

in the fashion industry. While high fashion continued to

thrive with extravagant designs and celebrity endorsements,

street style gained prominence as a powerful force

influencing mainstream fashion. The rise of streetwear,

fueled by urban youth culture and music, blurred the lines

between luxury and casual attire. Designers like Gianni

Versace and Vivienne Westwood embraced bold aesthetics,

and fashion became a form of self-expression accessible to

a broader audience.

Digital Revolution and Globalization

The 21st century ushered in the era of digitalization,

transforming the way fashion is produced, consumed, and

shared. The rise of e-commerce platforms democratized

access to fashion, allowing consumers to shop globally with

a click. Social media platforms became powerful tools for

fashion influencers, designers, and brands to showcase their

creations and connect directly with audiences. Fast fashion,

As awareness of environmental and ethical issues

grew, the fashion industry faced increased scrutiny

for its impact on the planet and exploitation of labor.

Designers and brands began to prioritize

sustainability, incorporating eco-friendly materials

and ethical practices into their business models. Slow

fashion gained traction, encouraging consumers to

make mindful and lasting choices, thus challenging

the disposable culture promoted by fast fashion.

The Future of Fashion

As we stand on the cusp of a new era, the fashion

industry continues to evolve. Technology,

sustainability, and inclusivity are shaping the

narrative, with designers and consumers alike

demanding a more responsible and forward-thinking

approach. The digital landscape is influencing not

only how fashion is created and consumed but also

how it is produced, with virtual fashion shows and

digital design tools becoming integral parts of the

industry.

MOST

INFLUENTIAL

LEADERS IN

INDUSTRY 2024

Shaping The Future Of Bespoke Tailoring While Preserving

The Timeless Artistry Of The Craft

In the dynamic realm of the fashion industry,

influential leaders play a pivotal role in shaping

trends, driving innovation, and setting the tone

for the entire landscape. These leaders serve as

trailblazers who not only dictate the direction of style

but also influence the cultural and societal perceptions

of beauty, identity, and self-expression. With their

creative vision, business acumen, and ability to

anticipate and adapt to ever-changing consumer

preferences, influential figures in the fashion industry

become catalysts for transformation.

Michael Andrews, Founder of Michael Andrews

Bespoke, has earned his place among the most

influential leaders in the fashion industry. His passion

for individual expression through clothing and an

acute understanding of design principles have shaped

Michael Andrews Bespoke into a distinguished name

in the luxury fashion landscape.

Transition from Corporate Attorney to Style Icon

Michael's journey to the pinnacle of custom tailoring

was anything but traditional. Initially, he pursued a

career in law, serving as a corporate attorney in New

York City. Despite the apparent disconnect from the

world of fashion, this legal background significantly

influenced his understanding of the professional

world's sartorial needs. Although successful in the

legal field, a burning desire for more creative

fulfilment always lingered within him.

29

Recognizing an untapped market for

impeccably crafted, personalized suits

tailored to the preferences of

discerning professionals, Michael

seized the opportunity to make a shift

from law to fashion. With a solid

commitment to delivering a level of

high-touch professional service often

absent in the apparel industry, the

influential leader established Michael

Andrews Bespoke in the Lower East

Side of Manhattan in 2006 before

moving to their current NoHo flagship

in 2010. Here, he seamlessly blends

traditional craftsmanship with modern

style, all at an accessible price point.

Under the exemplary leadership of

Michael, the brand has established

itself as a symbol of luxury and an

unwavering commitment to meticulous

craftsmanship. It serves a broad

spectrum of customers, providing not

only professional attire but also casual

and formal wear.

Custom Tailoring Meets Innovation

The New York-based Michael Andrews

Bespoke is a full-service custom

clothier, providing bespoke and madeto-measure

custom clothing for men

and women. Its extensive fabric

collection exceeds 50,000 options,

encompassing suiting, sport coats,

shirts, outerwear, jeans, swim shorts,

and more. Additionally, the brand

offers a range of accessories, including

shoes, socks, suspenders, neckwear,

and knitwear.

Operating directly, Michael Andrews

Bespoke has two physical locations: its

flagship in NoHo and its specialized

“Groom Shop” in Chelsea,

strategically positioned across from

Kleinfeld, the world's largest bridal

boutique. In 2023, the leading brand

expanded its portfolio by acquiring

Angel Ramos New York, a designerdriven

custom clothier in the West

Village. Furthermore, it has established

joint ventures with designer F.E.

Castleberry and content creator He

Spoke Style. The cohesive

management of these diverse

enterprises falls under our holding

company, MAARNY LLC.

“Our mission in the industry is twofold.

For the core Michael Andrews

Bespoke business, it is to consistently

combine the world's finest custom

tailoring with industry-leading service,

advice and style that delivers

unrivalled value to our clients. For

MAARNY, more generally, we strive to

offer a scalable platform to support

small, independent designers and

custom clothiers with technology and

broad-based production capacity,”

Michael proudly asserts.

Overcoming Challenges

As an influential figure in the fashion

industry, Michael believes that the

apparel industry is constantly

changing, presenting continual

challenges that make his career

fulfilling. However, the most

significant obstacle came with the

Covid pandemic, impacting his

business heavily. His clients, mainly

professionals seeking exceptional

office attire or individuals celebrating

special occasions, were scarce due to

remote work and limited events. The

shift to work-from-home and casual

office wear further affected his core

business.

Despite these challenges, the demand

for personalized garments has

rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. A

recent trend towards quality over

quantity has allowed Michael Andrews

Bespoke to grow faster than in the past

decade. The leading brand has also

significantly expanded its casual

offering and women's line.

Redefining Luxury With A Law

Firm Approach To Fashion

Michael Andrews Bespoke operates

similarly to a professional services

firm, such as a law firm or consultancy,

where a team of stylists operates

autonomously within a well-defined

operational framework. Michael's role

is establishing the brand's vision and

ensuring the team has the skills and

resources to accomplish their goals.

The influential leader is hands-off with

his direct reports, who all operate at the

top of their game, and they take a more

hands-on role when remedial training

or support is needed with other team

members. When asked about the

challenge of staff turnover in the

apparel and retail industries, Andrews

responded “most of my team has been

with me for more than ten years, so we

must be doing something right!”.

Upcoming Developments

As the Founder of Michael Andrews

Bespoke, Michael is excited about the

upcoming spring/summer lines from

Angel Ramos and F.E. Castleberry.

Additionally, there will be updates on

several potential acquisitions

scheduled for late 2024 or early 2025.

Roadmap For 2024 Revealed

In 2024, under the leadership of

Michael, Michael Andrews Bespoke

plans to focus on operationalizing the

expansion undertaken in 2023 while

aiming to achieve growth in both

revenue and profit. The emphasis on

operational excellence is intended to

support potential acquisitions in late

2024 or early 2025. Looking ahead, its

realities of running a business.

Advice For Budding Entrepreneurs

As a successful entrepreneur, Michael

advises budding entrepreneurs,

“Anyone thinking about becoming an

entrepreneur in any industry should

make sure they have a strong business

understanding first and foremost.

Fashion is doubly hard because you

also need the creative side and finding

people with both is rare – but that

combination is what you see in people

at the pinnacle like Ralph Lauren,

Michael Kors, Tom Ford, and Bernard

Arnoult. Raw creative talent only gets

you so far.”

He further adds, “My other piece of

advice is to make sure you have more

than sufficient funding. Despite the

romantic stories you hear to the

contrary, starting a business on a

shoestring is a recipe for failure.

Plenty of companies with good ideas

fail because they run out of cash too

soon. In our case, I kept practicing law

for the first two years so I could fund

the company's start-up costs.”

Grit As The Key Ingredient

Without a doubt, grit stands out as the

utmost critical trait when it comes to

navigating the entrepreneurial journey,

according to Michael. If you are not

ready to persistently grind through the

challenging moments, there may be a

better path for you than initiating your

own business. He further says that the

willingness to endure challenges, stay

committed during hardships, and

persevere when faced with adversity

forms the backbone of a successful

entrepreneurial venture. Embracing grit

give you two. My service philosophy:

'We treat our clients like friends and

our co-workers like family.' My view of

game of golf – you're really only

playing against yourself. Focus on

doing your best and don't worry about

the other guys (unless they're

cheating!).'”

INFLUENTIAL

LEADERS IN

INDUSTRY 2024

A Design Maven Relentlessly Striving For Excellence

In The Realm Of Design

Yevgeniya Aleksandrovna Yushkova, or YAY, a

visionary entrepreneur and an influential leader, is

the Founder of Yushkova Design Inc., dba YAY

Designs, a cutting-edge design studio that has been making

waves in the industry. Her passion for design and keen

business acumen have propelled Yushkova Design to the

forefront of the design world.

YAY has devoted over two decades to her passion for the

usher in transformative change and deliver superior results.

This belief forms the foundation of her approach to helping

retail companies with private label initiatives and fashion

YAY has gained hands-on experience in shaping business

both B&M Retail and E-Commerce. Her diverse

took place at Dyehard Fan Supply, where she spearheaded

process capabilities, and optimizing

product inventory flow while

minimizing variation.

Turning Challenges Into Growth

Opportunities

The entrepreneurial journey of YAY is

full of challenges that offer

opportunities for growth and learning.

One significant chapter in her

experience was launching the YAY

convertible clothing brand as a selffunded

entrepreneur. Despite her initial

belief in knowing everything about the

industry, the influential leader found

herself $40,000 in debt after a year and

a half. The contrast between

established brands with ample

resources and her lean-budget venture

became evident.

This realization led to a crucial

moment of reassessment. Success isn't

about knowing everything but adapting

and evolving when facing challenges.

She learned to take methodical steps to

minimize risks and maximise limited

resources. The key lesson was adopting

a lean design model, doing more with

less, and delivering products tailored to

the target customer's needs.

The transformative process involved

understanding market dynamics and

designing products with the end

consumer in mind. A profound

revelation came when YAY realized

that when something isn't working, a

comprehensive evaluation is necessary.

Fear of redesigning shouldn't

overshadow the potential for maximum

results. Instead of patching up issues,

she learned the importance of

strategically redesigning the entire

34

process for efficiency and

effectiveness.

Dealing with these challenges taught

her the importance of being resilient,

adaptable, and open to change. She not

only saved the YAY brand, but also

gained a deep understanding of the

industry and the ability to tackle

problems with strategic precision.

Crafting Success Through

Innovation

Yushkova Design began its journey in

2006, focusing on design, product

development, and manufacturing for

private-label apparel brands. In 2011, a

major milestone was achieved with the

launch of the YAY Design creative

platform, allowing direct engagement

with consumers and the birth of the

YAY brand. This move led to the

pioneering of functional apparel

through a convertible clothing

collection.

In 2012, the YAY brand expanded to

the Asian market, resulting in the

establishment of the international

affiliate Yushkova Design Philippines

Inc. Shifting operations to the

Philippines, the company catered to

luxury brands, building a strong

customer following in Asia. In 2015,

Yushkova Design Philippines Inc. and

the rights to YAY designs were

successfully sold, leading to a

profitable outcome. Since 2016, the

focus has shifted to helping startups in

both retail and e-commerce.

In 2023, Yushkova Design embraced

innovation with coaching and

mentoring programs for emerging

fashion entrepreneurs. An online selfstarter

training program has also been

introduced to provide accessible

guidance, saving aspiring

entrepreneurs from costly trial and

error. The company's commitment to

pushing boundaries and empowering

the next generation of fashion

entrepreneurs continues to shape the

industry's future.

Upcoming Developments

Under the leadership of YAY,

Yushkova Design has launched the

Fashionpreneur HUB, a non-profit

initiative to help aspiring fashion

entrepreneurs. This collaborative space

on school campuses provides

mentorship, apprenticeship programs,

resources, and educational initiatives

for building successful fashion

businesses. Targeting high school

students, the hub aims to bridge the

gap between passion and practical

knowledge, fostering a supportive

environment. Yushkova Design is

actively seeking board members and

partners to pilot and expand the

initiative across schools in the USA.

Leading By Example Leadership

Style

Embarking on her entrepreneurial

journey and facing career challenges

taught YAY the intricacies of business

and the essence of leadership. Her

leadership style is all about leading by

example, especially during

transformative periods. The influential

leader realized the importance of

actions over words, showcasing

resilience, adaptability, and a

willingness to learn. She prioritized a

lean mindset, strategic thinking,

efficiency, adaptability, and a

customer-centric approach in her

leadership journey.

These principles guide YAY through

uncharted waters, forming the

foundation of her leadership style. She

believes talent development is an

ongoing journey, empowering

individuals to embrace challenges,

learn from failures, and contribute to

organizational success. Mentorship is

crucial in this journey, providing a

roadmap for personal and professional

growth.

Key Qualities Of A Successful

Entrepreneur

According to YAY, a successful

entrepreneur relies on a mix of

resilience, flexibility, strategic

thinking, constant learning, and a

steadfast dedication to meeting

customer needs. This foundation is

reinforced by good communication,

forward-thinking leadership, and the

skill to transform difficulties into

opportunities.

One-Line Quote

When asked to share a one-line quote

that best describes her approach to

business and vision, YAYreplied,

integrity, and shaping the future of

fashion through collaborative

For aspiring entrepreneurs, YAYgives

advice: See challenges as chances to

grow, keep learning, and build strong

networks. Let innovation guide you in

the ever-changing world of

entrepreneurship. Remember, success

isn't just about the end goal but

enjoying the journey of learning and

progress. Also, follow a roadmap: Plan

strategically, do thorough research, and

use data to make decisions. Don't just

focus on the fun parts like designing

and launching – make sure every step

is based on a well-thought-out strategy.

This way, you reduce the risk of

launching a product without

understanding the market and customer

Advice For Aspiring Individuals

YAY, advice for those considering

joining the fashion industry now is to

be strategic. Understand market trends,

grasp the industry's workings. Make a

solid plan covering everything from

design to marketing. Do thorough

research and analyze data to make
